Ramadan Kareem!

“Fasting blinds the body in order to open the eyes of your soul.” – Rumi “

With Ramadan arriving earlier with each passing year, we turn our thoughts inwards and prepare for days of reflection, generosity and togetherness through time-honoured rituals and traditional flavours. In our cover story this month, we celebrate the many ways the island savours the spirit of the Holy Month with our curated guide to the finest Iftars and Ghabgas around town.

With calm sunset meals giving way to lively evening soirées, we also focus on dressing for this special period, highlighting a few of our favourite Ramadan capsule collections for 2026, bringing together style, comfort and tradition.

And there’s also plenty happening before fasting begins. Formula 1 pre-season testing returns to Bahrain International Circuit, giving fans a front-row view as teams prepare for the new season. Music lovers can look forward to the Bob Marley Birthday Festival, while internationally renowned motivational speaker BK Shivani visits the Kingdom with two free public talks. Fitness fanatics are invited to take part in Bahrain’s first hybrid fitness race and wrestling fans can expect plenty of drama as the Kingdom hosts its first Royal Rumble at BahrainMania (not to be confused with the charity boxing event of the same name). Culture vultures can also enjoy the Bahrain Arts Society’s Annual Exhibit, while horse racing fans can mark their calendars for the King’s Cup Festival returning in March.

In more adrenaline-pumping news, Bahrain was recently in the spotlight as Red Bull athletes Dani Román and Fred Fugen made history by achieving a world-first for their incredible synchronised wingsuit flight through the Bahrain World Trade Center. We caught up with the duo to hear how this daring feat came together.

On the dining front, our team has been busy sampling flavours from across the island. From Southeast Asian plates at BO.SABI to the seafood night at Hilton Bahrain and the newly unveiled LUMEE at City Centre, there’s plenty to keep your taste buds tantalised. In motoring, we put the elegantly confident MG 8 PHEV through its paces and bring you exciting launches from Genesis and Jetour, while our travel pages explore the freedom of solo adventures, alongside a stay at one of Mayfair’s most enduring London hotels. And, as always, we keep you on trend with the latest in fashion, beauty, tech and entertainment.

Here’s wishing you a meaningful month ahead.

Bye for now…

Having announced the launch of ticket sales for Formula 1 Aramco Pre-Season Testing 2026, Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) is offering fans the opportunity to see the next generation of F1 cars in action ahead of the new season. With F1 beginning a new era with transformative regulations and an 11th team joining the grid, six days of testing will be held in Sakhir from February 11 to 13 and from February 18 to 20. There is also free access on both open days of the second Bahrain test (February 19 and 20) for all who purchased tickets to the Bahrain Grand Prix 2026 during BIC’s Early Bird promotion (tickets bought before September 8, 2025).

Exclusive hospitality packages will also be available, featuring the best views of the action right above the pit lane, along with five-star cuisine and beverage selections throughout the day. BAHRAIN TO STAGE BIGGEST CARIBBEAN CELEBRATION

Music fans are in for a treat as the Bob Marley Birthday Festival returns bigger and better, celebrating all things Caribbean with an international lineup of reggae artists, live bands and Caribbean culture.

Bahrain is gearing up to host its biggest Caribbean and reggae celebration to date with the Bob Marley Birthday Festival on February 6. Organised by Miami Events, the highly anticipated event will be held at Captain Jack’s, Elite Seef Residence & Hotel, Seef District, from 1pm to 9pm and is expected to draw music lovers from across the Kingdom. Following the sold-out success of its previous staging at Coral Bay, the festival returns this year with an expanded programme, promising an unforgettable celebration of reggae music, Caribbean culture and the legendary Bob Marley.

Widely regarded as the largest Caribbean reggae festival ever staged in the country, the event brings together international artists, global sounds and cultural unity under one shared message that reflects Bob Marley’s legacy: One Love. One People. One Vibe.

This year’s headline act, coming all the way from Kingston, Jamaica, is Alex Marley, reggae royalty and first cousin of Bob Marley. Performing live, backed by the iconic Wailing Wailers, his set promises an authentic roots reggae experience that celebrates the music’s origins and global influence.

The lineup also features MO & Ali from Amsterdam, acclaimed as Bob Marley’s leading tribute band, along with

Bahrain’s own live acts Abyooki and The Kushari Band. A strong DJ roster supports the live performances, including DJs Epic, Shola, Nesto and Timo from Bahrain, alongside international DJs Kriss Darlin and Double Trouble. The event will be hosted by UK DJ and MC Andrew Bentley, bringing his unmatched energy and charisma to the stage. Adding flavour to the vibes, guests can enjoy a premium Caribbean Brunch, running from 1pm to 5pm. Curated by Chef Big Sho of Kingston 10, the brunch features authentic Caribbean dishes and is priced at BD25, including full access to the festival.

Advance tickets are available, with ladies’ entry priced at BD5 and gents’ at BD10. Ticket and brunch packages can be purchased through Platinumlist (manama.platinumlist. net), with limited availability.

With organisers describing it as a cultural moment for Bahrain, the Bob Marley Birthday Festival is set to be a standout event on the island’s 2026 social calendar. ✤

BAHRAIN’S FIRST HYBRID FITNESS RACE

A new hybrid race will be held on the island this month, bringing together running, strength work and functional movement in a full-day fitness event open to everyone.

A fresh fitness event arrives in the Kingdom, as the Bahrain Rugby Club is set to host Hybrid 800 on February 13. Held in conjunction with Bahrain Sports Day, the race will welcome participants of all fitness levels – from serious athletes and weekend gym-goers to kids – to take part in a format that mixes running with a wide range of workout challenges.

A hybrid race combines the main pillars of fitness: cardio, strength, functional movement and endurance. Participants move through a course made up of 10 exercise stations, each separated by an 800-metre run. The stations include Assault Bike, Farmer’s Carry, Devil Press, Row Machine, Dumbbell Snatch, Lunges, Burpee Broad Jump, SkiErg (skiing cardio machine), Bear Crawl and Wall Balls, creating a full-body challenge that tests all areas for a well-rounded experience.

The event will run from 7am to 7pm, with registration opening at 7am and the first wave starting at 8am. Racing wraps up at 6pm, followed by a presentation hour to announce winners and hand out cash prizes for each category. Kids will also receive prizes, which are yet to be confirmed.

Adults can enter Hybrid 800 as solo competitors or doubles (male, female or mixed), while younger participants have

dedicated categories for ages eight to nine, 10 to 11, 12 to 13 and 14 to 16. Kids will complete 20 each of burpees, farmer's carries, lunges, squats and wall ball, plus a 200-metre run between each station. All workouts will be led by professionals who will guide competitors based on their fitness level.

Spectators can attend the event at no charge, although numbers will be limited due to space, and the Bahrain Rugby Club will also be open to non-members for the day, making it easy for families and friends to be part of the fun. Ahead of race day, a shorter version of Hybrid 800 will be offered to the public at Bahrain Bay on February 12 as part of the GSA Sports Day celebrations, giving people a chance to experience the race for free in a simplified format.

Registration is open until February 6 with tickets priced at USD76 for adult solo competitors (16 years and above), USD155 for doubles and USD28 for children. ✤

ART IN SPOTLIGHT

The Bahrain Arts Society’s annual exhibition returns alongside a solo showcase by Dr Waleed Qanoush, bringing together works by 93 artists representing diverse schools and styles.

The Bahrain Arts Society marked the opening of its Annual Exhibition recently at the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities’ Art Center, presented alongside a solo exhibition by artist Dr Waleed Qanoush titled Pyramid, Tree and Moon. The opening was attended by His Excellency Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of the National Arts Council and Honorary President of the Society, His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and Sheikha Marwa bint Rashid Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Arts Society, as well as ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, artists and art enthusiasts.

This year’s exhibition highlights the Bahrain Arts Society’s journey of more than four decades since its founding in 1983. Over the years, the Society has played a central role in supporting the local art scene through organising exhibitions, providing curatorial supervision and offering educational workshops and programmes for emerging artists. Through these efforts, it has helped to strengthen Bahrain’s cultural landscape at both local and regional levels and put Bahraini contemporary art on the international map.

The exhibition brings together works by 93 artists,

His pieces draw on symbols inspired by nature and heritage, brought together through geometric forms and precise compositions. The works explore relationships between inanimate objects, living beings and abstract concepts, offering visitors both a visual and intellectual experience.

Dr Qanoush is known for his distinguished career, combining academic creativity, artistic practice and cultural leadership, which has earnt him a prominent position in the contemporary art scene.

The Art Center is open daily from 9am to 8pm and both exhibitions will remain open to the public until February 20. ✤

BUSINESS DISTRICT WELCOMES REIMAGINED HOTEL

Following an extensive rebrand, Grand Mercure Business Bay has opened in Dubai, bringing Accor’s premium hospitality brand to one of the city’s busiest districts.

Grand Mercure Business Bay has opened in Dubai following the rebranding of Gulf Court Hotel Business Bay, owned and managed by Gulf Hotels Group (GHG), under a franchise agreement with Accor. The opening marks a new chapter for the hotel, introducing Grand Mercure’s distinctive approach to hospitality to one of the city’s most dynamic neighbourhoods.

Grand Mercure Business Bay sits on Al Abraj Street along Marasi Drive, in the heart of Business Bay, just around eight minutes from Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and key exhibition and trade venues, making it a practical base for both business and leisure travellers. Rooted in international hospitality standards while deeply anchored in its destination, the hotel reflects the brand’s philosophy of elevating locality through meaningful gestures, warm rituals and intentional service.

The property features 270 refreshed rooms and suites designed to offer refined comfort with a strong sense of place. Four meeting rooms host up to 90 guests, complemented by a club lounge and five dining and entertainment venues. One of the new additions is Mediterranean Muse, a Mediterranean-inspired dining concept scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2026. An upgraded outdoor pool terrace overlooking Business Bay’s skyline adds a calm urban retreat for guests and visitors.

“This transition to the Grand Mercure brand represents a strategic step for Gulf Hotels Group,” said Ahmed Janahi,

This partnership enhances our competitiveness in Dubai and aligns with our vision to grow through alliances that complement GHG's long-standing hospitality heritage.”

DRESSING FOR THE SEASON

The Holy Month is a time of quiet reflection and good deeds. But as long days of fasting and contemplation give way to sunset, it's also a time for gathering with family and friends to break the fast and celebrate this particularly spiritual time over traditional foods and activities, such as games.

Each year, more and more designers and brands look to the Middle East to take inspiration for special Ramadan capsule collections, highlighting both the importance of family and the spirit of modesty during this special period.

Over the coming pages, we showcase a few of our favourite selections for Ramadan 2026.

Confident Timeless Design

Tommy Hilfiger, in partnership with Apparel Group, presents a contemporary edit from the Spring 2026 collection to celebrate the Holy Month with a campaign featuring Asallah Kamel, a leading voice in modern Arab style and culture.

In a lifestyle-led story honouring family and the spirit of Middle Eastern identity, the campaign marks a special milestone as Asallah, husband Khalid Al Khoory and their daughter make their first-ever appearance as a family of three, sharing a joyful reveal in timeless Tommy Hilfiger looks. Photographed by Sam Rawadi, the campaign captures the couple's elevated charm, reflecting the beauty and warmth of shared family moments during the Holy Month.

The curated collection offers a range of looks, from intimate

dinner wear to festive Eid attire. Styles for women include pleated maxi-dresses, preppy gold-buttoned jackets, relaxed skirts and polished layers that balance comfort with effortless elegance.

For men, heritage Oxford shirts, iconic polos and tailored chinos bring timeless style to the modern wardrobe. The collection features designs for women, men and kids, alongside an offering of accessories, including watches, jewellery and sunglasses.

“Being part of Tommy Hilfiger’s Ramadan campaign has been an absolute pleasure as our first family campaign," said Asallah.

"The campaign beautifully reflects the true essence of Ramadan through family celebrations and connection, elevated by the brand’s timeless looks. The collaboration has left us with memories full of love and spirit of the season we will treasure.”

Stylishly Modest A Middle East Exclusive

F ounders and designers of Noon By Noor, Shaikha Noor Rashid Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Mohamed Al Khalifa, chose a selection of modest silhouettes drawn from the Resort 2026 collection for their Ramadan capsule.

Material contrasts construct the silhouette. Tailored sleeves are joined to shirt bodies, forming a hybrid shirt-jacket that redefines suiting. Shirt-jackets and dresses are developed with double collars. Sleeveless jackets feature draped shoulders, buttoned sides and patch pockets drawn from safari uniforms.

Shirt dresses adopt an elongated proportion, light and fluid, with a quiet reference to the thobe, translating a traditionally masculine garment into a feminine evening-like dress. Belts recur across dresses and jackets, structuring the body while allowing movement.

Trailing hems drawn from eveningwear are paired with capes worn over the silhouette, adding dimension through layered drape rather than embellishment. And monochrome black and white gives a sharpness and simplicity to the offering.

Tory Burch has introduced an exclusive capsule collection for the Middle East, designed especially for Ramadan.

The offering includes a curated assortment of handbags, footwear, ready-to-wear and jewellery, drawing inspiration from the sophisticated style of Middle Eastern women and the Tory Burch runway.

The collection features the elegant Mini Lee Radziwill TopHandle Bag and LeeLee Skinny Mule in a refined palette of black, purple and ivory.

The footwear and handbags complement an assortment of effortless dresses, as well as a silk shirt and pants duo in a unique floral print that carries through to packaging created specifically for this collection.

The capsule also includes an assortment of jewellery in bright gold and light brass, some with luminous pearl details, and a watch with a distinctive pale pink dial and a classic two-tone link bracelet – perfect finishing touches for Iftar and Suhour gatherings.

A Season To Shine Elevated Femininity

Missoni’s SS26 Ramadan capsule collection recently debuted at Harvey Nichols – Dubai, celebrating a season of togetherness, elegance and the art of refined dressing. This regional exclusive capsule features graceful silhouettes and thoughtful craftsmanship, where modest design meets Missoni’s mastery of colour, texture and knitwear.

Flowing dresses, wide-leg trousers, long skirts and lightweight cardigans define the offering, elevated by delicate metallic threads and subtle shimmer that echo the warm glow of Ramadan nights. A rich palette of gold and brown tones lends the collection a naturally modern and elevated feel, perfectly suited to the season.

Each piece showcases Missoni’s signature artistry, from intricate knitwork to distinctive textures.

For Ramadan, NIHAN PEKER highlights a refined selection of modest-ready silhouettes from its existing collections, offering elevated dressing options suited to the Holy Month’s reflective days and elegant evening gatherings.

Drawing on the brand’s signature femininity and contemporary craftsmanship, the edit brings together flowing dresses, elongated lines and softly structured designs that balance sophistication with ease. Featuring long sleeves, floorlength silhouettes and graceful draping in fluid crepes and lightweight satins, the selection naturally lends itself to Iftar gatherings, family occasions and Eid celebrations. Defined by understated palettes and fluid fabrics, each piece offers versatility and timeless elegance, transitioning seamlessly from daytime moments of reflection to elevated evening settings.

Traditional Yet Contemporary Understated Elegance

Brunello Cucinelli’s Abaya Capsule Collection creates a distinctive synthesis of traditional elegance and modern aesthetics. Tailored yet free-flowing, each abaya reflects the values of comfort, lightness and versatility. Navigating the balance between precision and spontaneity, structure and softness, the new collection expresses a refined fluidity, where artisanal details, noble materials and essential silhouettes reflect a style that is both composed and instinctively graceful. Distinctive fabrics like crispy silk enhance the movement of the garments, while embellishments introduce depth and visual rhythm inspired by the natural world: dazzling florals, croc-inspired embroideries and fil coupé motifs. Every piece embodies the interplay of fluid forms and luminous craftsmanship.

Natural shades – sand, stone, cocoa and cloud – are interspersed with more defined tones, such as deep burgundy or slate. Coordinated layering remains central: abayas are styled with soft cashmere knits, equestrian-inspired trousers and wool coats or denim overshirts that blend elegance with ease.

COS marks the Holy Month with a limited-edition womenswear collection designed with fluidity at its core and defined by enveloping pleats and subtle injections of colour.

Blending understated elegance with modern versatility, the Ramadan collection presents ready-to-wear silhouettes in blush tones and grounded neutrals, crafted for effortless transitions from day to night.

Meticulous craftsmanship underpins each design, with thoughtful details elevating each piece. Vintage-inspired louche tailoring introduces cinched waists, offering versatile layering opportunities that balance structure with movement, while matching sets showcase delicate pleating, wrapping fluidly around the body. Dresses feature batwing sleeves for dynamic proportions, while hand-painted anemones - printed onto a full-length skirt set and matching scarf – add a hazy, artisanal softness to the collection.

The special edit encapsulates the brand’s core principles of timelessness and quality, ideal for day-to-night dressing during this period of traditional gatherings and quiet reflection. ✤

DESIGNED TO GO THE DISTANCE

Developed with the Middle East in mind, fact spent time with the MG 8 PHEV to see how it performs in real-world regional conditions.

From the moment we collected the MG 8 PHEV, it was clear this wasn’t a saloon that planned on getting lost among the usual suspects. Positioned as MG’s first plug-in hybrid mid-sized saloon for the Middle East, the MG 8 arrived with a level of assurance that suggested someone, somewhere, had been very thorough. Our test drive took us through city traffic, open stretches of road and the kind of stop-start moments where patience is usually tested. Instead, we found ourselves unusually relaxed and consistently impressed by how easily the MG 8 handled each situation, while still delivering strong efficiency throughout the drive.

Clean Lines

Visually, the MG 8 struck a confident balance between elegance and presence. Its coupé-like silhouette sat neatly atop a substantial mid-sized saloon stance, helped by a generous 2,810mm wheelbase that gave it real road authority. The wide grille and sharp LED headlights gave the front end a decisive look, while the connected LED tail lamps at the rear added a modern, cohesive finish. What stood out most was how deliberate everything felt. There were no unnecessary creases, no design flourishes trying too hard to stand out. Instead, the MG 8 relied on balance and confidence rather than excess. Even at rest, it projected a composed and purposeful presence.

Calm Comfort

Stepping inside, the cabin immediately delivered on comfort. The zero-gravity cloud-sensing seats, complete with ventilation and memory functions, made settling in effortless. The space felt open and well considered, with generous legroom – front and rear – that allowed everyone to stretch out comfortably, without triggering the usual quiet negotiations.

The materials and layout leant toward refined simplicity rather than excess. Everything felt where it should be, from the leatherwrapped steering wheel to the clean dashboard design. After only a short time behind the wheel, the cabin began to feel effortless and familiar, allowing us to focus entirely on the drive.

Digital Done Right

Technology was front and centre, quite literally, in the overall cabin design, thanks to the dual 12.3-inch panoramic displays. The setup felt intuitive rather than intimidating, with information presented clearly and without distraction. Smartphone integration worked seamlessly and wireless charging kept devices powered without cable gymnastics. We spent less time learning the system and more time wondering why others make this so complicated. The 360-degree camera proved especially useful in tighter spaces, providing clear visibility and making low-speed manoeuvres straightforward and stress-free. It was technology that enhanced confidence without drawing unnecessary attention to itself.

Confident Performance

At the heart of the MG 8 sat the brand’s DMH Super Hybrid system, pairing a 1.5-litre hybrid-dedicated engine with an intelligent electric drive unit. The combined output of 201hp and

330Nm of torque translated into smooth, confident acceleration, with 0-100km/h achieved in a respectable seven seconds. Five adaptive driving modes allowed the MG 8 to respond confidently to different conditions. Power delivery felt immediate yet controlled, whether navigating urban roads or travelling at higher speeds. Improved noise and vibration levels contributed to a calm and refined driving environment – the sort where road noise simply gave up.

Designed to Go Further

Living with the plug-in hybrid system was refreshingly straightforward. With an all-electric range of up to 125km, many of our shorter journeys were completed using electric power alone. Plug-in charging was simple and smart energy recovery worked quietly in the background to maintain efficiency. Range anxiety never made it into the conversation.

The MG 8’s combined driving range of up to 1,655km added a genuine sense of flexibility, making longer journeys feel uncomplicated, with detours actively encouraged.

Built-In Safety

Safety systems were comprehensive and reassuring, combining active driver assistance with robust passive protection. Features such as cruise control and the 360-degree camera worked predictably and smoothly, reducing effort in traffic and adding confidence during low-speed manoeuvres.

Rather than relying on gimmicks, the MG 8 impressed through balance and execution.”

Alongside this, a full suite of airbags, including curtain airbags, provided an added layer of reassurance, reinforcing the sense that occupant protection had been carefully considered rather than treated as an afterthought.

Built on MG’s next-generation hybrid architecture and engineered specifically for Middle Eastern conditions, the MG 8 felt robust and well prepared for regional driving demands. It delivered a sense of security rooted in predictability and consistency.

After the Drive

By the end of our time with the MG 8 PHEV, one thing was clear: this sedan delivered far more than efficiency alone. It combined comfort, technology, performance and ease of use into a package that felt thoughtfully engineered and well resolved. Rather than relying on gimmicks, the MG 8 impressed through balance and execution. From daily commuting to longer journeys, it consistently delivered a composed, refined experience – one that positioned it as a compelling new option in the plug-in hybrid saloon segment. ✤

EXTREME OFF-ROADER WORLD PREMIERE

Genesis took to the UAE’s Rub’ al Khali ‘Empty Quarter’ to debut a stunning new vehicle engineered for demanding terrain.

The X Skorpio Concept, inspired by the black scorpion, known for its resilience and ability to thrive in harsh environments, is Genesis’ first extreme off-road vehicle, purpose-built to conquer harsh terrain with cutting-edge performance and luxurious design, driven by a spirit of fearless exploration.

“The X Skorpio concept is an extreme off-road vehicle designed to be driven across the toughest and harshest terrain,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer of Genesis. “With a tubular frame, a full roll cage and many components sourced directly from off-road endurance racing specialists, the X Skorpio Concept explores yet another facet of the Genesis brand and highlights our intent to inject emotion and adrenaline into different segments.”

The uncompromising exterior design features tension-filled curves, which flow seamlessly across its sculpted body. The segmented armour-like panels not only evoke the protective nature of a scorpion’s exoskeleton but also enhance practicality, allowing for quick and efficient repairs in extreme environments. Genesis’ signature Two-Line design is expertly integrated into the front and rear lamps, offering fully functional lighting, creating a striking focal point.

The interior redefines luxury in the off-road segment, designed with a singular focus: ensuring driver performance and passenger comfort during the physically demanding challenges of off-road adventures. Ergonomic seating, intuitive controls and climate control systems aim to enhance performance and reduce driver fatigue.

The instrument cluster is incorporated into the steering wheel and a sliding display reconfigures between solo-rider and co-piloted modes. Safety grab handles are prominent touchpoints, ensuring stability during rough movements, while advanced communication systems complete the setup, ensuring seamless coordination even in the most remote environments.

The colour palette and materials of the X Skorpio Concept were

carefully chosen to capture the bold and daring essence of a black scorpion. The exterior features a deep black base infused with a vibrant blue tint, mimicking a scorpion’s natural hues.

The interior materials reflect a scorpion’s serious and aggressive nature. Luxurious suede with intricate gradient patterns — crafted using state-of-the-art laser cutting techniques — is paired with leather that features unique stitching inspired by the segmented legs of a scorpion.

Equipped with a high-performance V8 engine delivering 1,100hp and 1,085Nm of torque, the X Skorpio Concept sets new benchmarks for off-road driving. The vehicle is equipped with 18inch beadlock wheels paired with custom 40-inch off-road tyres, providing superior grip and durability for rugged terrain. It is also outfitted with Brembo Motorsport Brakes, providing enhanced stopping power and optimal responsiveness, ensuring the driver retains full control.

With a short wheelbase and a high break-over angle, the X Skorpio Concept sits on a finely tuned suspension with extreme ground clearance, allowing it to traverse the roughest terrains without compromising the vehicle’s integrity. High-clearance fenders, durable skid plates and precision-engineered components work together to prevent the vehicle from getting stuck or damaged.

Safety is a cornerstone of the X Skorpio Concept’s design with critical features, such as an integrated roll cage, a four-point harness system and reinforced structural components to ensure maximum protection for drivers and passengers.

Additionally, the vehicle is constructed using an innovative combination of fibreglass, carbon fibre and Kevlar, achieving a perfect balance of durability and reduced weight.✤

BRINGING PLAY TO LIFE

Moving away from the brand’s iconic simple design ethos, LEGO has introduced the Smart Play System.

Full of cool tech that reacts to twists, taps and more, the new SMART Brick responds to SMART Tags and SMART Minifigures to bring play to life.

Tags tell the SMART Bricks how to behave, for instance mimicking the sound of a car or a helicopter; they play unique sounds, moods and reactions for every SMART Minifigure they encounter.

The innovation is the result of extensive research taking almost 10 years that revealed kids wanted three things: a new toy that let them play with friends; the toy needed to be responsive so their actions mattered; and they craved an experience that evolved over time as they played.

The designers wanted LEGO brick-built creations to come alive, reacting precisely to the way they were being interacted with. To have enough intelligence to recognise different characters around them and to truly play back. But they also had to stay visually simple, so the tech had to be hidden so as not to affect the play experience. Welcome the SMART Brick.

SMART Bricks charge through a coil – like the one in your electric toothbrush – and these coils can identify which tag is closest, allowing the SMART Bricks to react to other bricks, tags and minifigures nearby, thanks to a bespoke silicon ASIC chip. Cue planes roaring, buses rumbling and more. ✤ GO: VISIT LEGO.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

SOLVING A PERPETUAL PROBLEM

Owning a perpetual calendar watch is a dream for some, but setting all the functions can be a bit of a nightmare. Audemars Piguet has the answer.

Two years after initiating a partnership with the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), the Swiss watchmaker unveiled an intelligent setting device that automatically sets and winds its latest 41mm Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar wristwatches.

Perpetual calendars have long been admired for their complexity, yet traditionally require advanced watchmaking knowledge and specialised tools to set. Following the ergonomic advancements of this year’s 41mm Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, which enables corrections via its ‘all-in-one’ crown, the setting box offers an additional solution that makes a traditionally technical task automatic.

Combining mechanical engineering with robotics, computer vision and AI, the device embraces both tradition and innovation. Owners simply place their watch in the box and, once the lid is closed, it determines which functions are out of sync and then does all the hard work for them in just five minutes. ✤

SPEED’S THE NAME OF THE GAME

Gamer fans of F1 champions McLaren can now get in on the act after the racing team paired up with Secretlab to produce a limited-edition gaming chair.

The Secretlab McLaren Collection brings together McLaren’s world-class engineering expertise and Secretlab’s proprietary ergonomic technology. A nod to the British automaker’s storied past – and its future.

Inspired by the single-piece MonoCell chassis at the heart of every McLaren supercar, the limited-edition chair distills the uncompromising strength, lightness and rigidity of carbon fibre into a single form.

With smooth, flowing contours, the carbon fibre shell echoes the McLaren W1's aerodynamic teardrop cabin, shaped for phenomenal acceleration and speed.

LEADING WITH PASSION AND DISCIPLINE

As the new General Manager of Hilton Garden Inn Bahrain Bay, Alena Sodal brings her own unique approach to hospitality, as she shares her ambitions for the property, industry trends for this year and a hands-on management style.

"I

lead by trusting, supporting and opening doors because when people feel empowered, extraordinary things happen." “

Apassionate hotelier with almost two decades of experience, Alena brings her vast hospitality expertise to her new role, heralding a period of operational consistency and greater efficiency for the property.

“It’s an exciting moment,” she says. “In the immediate term, my focus is very simple: get the basics consistently right. That means operational stability, strong guest feedback and a team that feels confident and supported in what they do every day. Longer term, the goal is to position the hotel as the go-to choice in Bahrain Bay for both business and leisure travellers – not by trying to be everything to everyone but by being exceptionally good at what we promise. Sustainable performance, strong commercial results and a reputation for genuine, uncomplicated hospitality are the priorities.”

The hotel’s positioning was a major draw for Alena, whose career has been built on understanding what guests value most. “Hilton Garden Inn has a very clear value proposition: comfort without unnecessary complexity,” she says. “Guests know what they’re getting – quality sleep, great connectivity, reliable service and a welcoming atmosphere.

“What drew me to this particular property is its location and scale – it has real potential to serve multiple guest segments while still feeling approachable. And Bahrain itself is a market with character: it’s open, culturally rich and business friendly. It’s a place where hospitality still feels personal, and that matters to me.”

When it comes to measuring success, Alena takes a balanced view: “Numbers matter – revenue, profitability, market share – we can’t pretend otherwise,” she notes. “But for me, success is when strong financial results are supported by happy guests and an engaged team, not achieved at their expense. I pay close attention to guest feedback trends, team turnover and how confidently leaders make decisions. Improvement comes from discipline: clear priorities, honest data and having the courage to fix things early instead of explaining them later.”

Looking at the wider hospitality landscape, Alena is optimistic about Bahrain’s future. “Bahrain has huge opportunity in its ability

to combine business, culture and lifestyle in a very accessible way,” she says. “Short-stay travel, regional corporate demand and experiential leisure are all strong growth areas. The challenge, however, is differentiation. Supply is increasing and guests are more informed than ever. Hotels will need to be sharper –operationally, commercially and in how they tell their story – not just rely on brand or location.”

Turning to future trends, Alena believes customer expectations will continue to shape how hotels operate: “Guests will continue to value efficiency – fast check-ins, smart technology, seamless service – but at the same time, they want things to feel human,” Alena explains. “I also expect more focus on flexible spaces, all-day dining concepts that actually work and a stronger link between sustainability and smart cost control. Luxury will be less about excess and more about ease.”

When it comes to leadership style, Alena describes herself as direct, fair and hands-on, saying: “I lead by trusting, supporting and opening doors because when people feel empowered, extraordinary things happen. And isn’t that our ultimate goal: to create extraordinary moments — for our guests, our team members and our community?"

Asked which role she would step into for a day, she answers: “Housekeeping, without hesitation. It’s the heart of the hotel and one of the toughest jobs operationally and physically. Spending a full day in their shoes is the best reminder that every decision we make at leadership level eventually lands on someone else’s workload.” Rounding off on a more personal note, Alena offers an insight that many may not expect. “I originally studied music, which surprises people given that my career ended up in hospitality operations,” she says. “My first role in a hotel was actually in finance, so I started my journey understanding numbers before moving fully into operations. That mix has stayed with me – I tend to look at hotels both analytically and intuitively. And yes, I’m still very good at spotting inefficiencies, which my team might say is less of a secret talent and more of a personality trait.” ✤

ORIENTAL FLAVOURS REFINED

Bringing his gastronomic expertise of more than 18 years from Jordan to Bahrain, Executive Chef Ahmad Abu Azzab is now leading the culinary charge at Downtown Rotana. Discover what ignited his passion for cooking, how he runs his kitchen and one of his most memorable dishes to date!

What drew you into the kitchen in the early days and when did you first realise that you wanted to be a chef?

My earliest inspiration came from my mother. I grew up watching her cook with incredible passion and care, and she was widely regarded as the best cook in our family. She was always the one people turned to for gatherings and special occasions. Seeing how her food brought people together and created moments of happiness left a deep impression on me. From a young age, I understood that cooking was more than a skill. It was a way of connecting with people, and that was when I knew I wanted to pursue it as a career.

Your career has taken you from cloud kitchens to pre-opening hotels and five-star properties. How have those different environments shaped the way you run a kitchen today?

Each environment played a crucial role in shaping my approach. Cloud kitchens taught me efficiency, speed and the importance of effective food cost control. Pre-opening hotels strengthened my planning abilities and gave me experience in building teams, systems and workflows from the ground up. Working in five-star properties refined my standards, consistency and focus on the guest experience. Today, I aim

to run a kitchen that combines structure and discipline with creativity, teamwork and uncompromising quality.

What was the last dish you tried that blew your mind? Where did you try it and what made it memorable?

The most memorable dish I’ve experienced recently was Maftoul (Palestinian-style couscous), which I prepared myself from start to finish. Cooking it entirely by hand reminded me of the power of traditional dishes when they are executed with care and precision. The balance of spices, the simplicity of the ingredients and the final presentation proved that heritage and authenticity can be just as impactful as modern cuisine. It stood out because it respected tradition while showcasing solid technique.

Is there a signature dish at Downtown Rotana that best represents your cooking style, and what makes it special?

Our main courses best reflect my cooking style, as they blend Oriental flavours with refined culinary techniques. The standout dish is Fish Sayadieh, a Mediterranean dish that holds strong personal meaning for me. What makes it special is our commitment to preserving its authenticity while presenting it at a five-star standard, delivering bold flavours with consistency, elegance and attention to detail in every plate. ✤

PAN-ASIA ON A PLATE

Spicy, sweet and sour flavours of Southeast Asian cuisine were on the cards for Apple Sharma, as she headed to BO.SABI at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa to sample the restaurant’s latest offerings.

There are few things more comforting than the warm, tantalising flavours of the Orient on a cold, wintry afternoon. Add the good company of a friend and I was sold – the perfect way to end my week on a Thursday at the awardwinning BO.SABI. We were invited to try a selection of newly introduced delights alongside popular dishes that still firmly hold their place on the menu.

Walking in from the cold, windy outdoors to the warmth of BO.SABI felt like a welcome homecoming. Restaurant Supervisor Anuka and her team greeted us with genuine smiles, and the friendly service comforted us throughout the meal.

With bamboo accents, high ceilings of wooden beams, matching furniture and Oriental-style wall art, the interiors transport you to Far East Asia, while pop art-inspired paintings add a modern, funky touch. Dome-shaped ceiling lights cast a warm glow and the cushioned seating sets a relaxed ambience.

The restaurant is also home to an impressive bar in one corner. Opposite it is a stage for live music, set against a feature wall glowing with the BO.SABI signage and a trickling waterfall underneath. Overlooking the pool outside (with heaters at this time of year), the whole place feels cosy and elegant – an ideal spot for lounging with friends or enjoying an evening out with the family.

Feeling sufficiently warm (thanks to the blankets provided by Anuka – a lovely touch), we scoured the new menu, which offers Asian favourites from Japanese and Chinese to Thai and Korean. We began with salads, presented as beautifully as they tasted.

The BO.SABI Speciality Salad arrived first, with ponzu shrimp, creamy avocado, cherry tomatoes, pomegranate and baby lettuce, finished with crispy crab on top. Fresh and flavourful, the shrimp was well-cooked with a bright ponzu dressing that was light, zesty and mildly savoury. The pomegranate added little bursts of sweetness and the crispy crab brought a lovely crunch.

The Beijing Duck Salad followed, featuring Peking duck breast with a mango roasted tomato dressing. This was a real hit at the table – the meat was perfectly tender, juicy and packed with flavour, while the vibrant sour-and-sweet dressing provided a lovely contrast and cut through the richness – a marriage made in flavour heaven.

My favourite, however, was the Khmai Phak Salad: avocado with mango, zipping cucumber, lettuce, vine tomato, green scallion and peanut aioli. It tasted as good as it looked –freshness on a plate and every bite brought a little surprise.

The creaminess from the avocado and sweetness from the cubed mango were delightful, all brought together nicely with the nutty, vinaigrette-like aioli.

While we waited for the next course, mocktails arrived: a virgin Piña Colada with creamy coconutty goodness, a fruity Strawberry Mojito, a deliciously refreshing Ginger Hibiscus and the perfectly sweet Lychee Delight.

Soon enough, two platters of sushi landed on the table. Crunchy Salmon Skin Maki was an unusual one for us, as we had never tried salmon skin in a maki roll. Stuffed with the crispy fish skin and topped with Japanese mayo, avocado and a spicy sauce, it delivered a surprising crunch and a slight

kick of heat. Huks Hamour Maki, filled with fresh hamour was equally enjoyable. The little battered cubes of fish were crispy and slightly sweet, elevated with the drizzle of creamy, savoury Japanese mayo.

Hot appetisers came next, and Dragon Prawn Ball was a big hit. The juicy prawn balls, with chopped ginger, garlic, water chestnut, oyster sauce, sesame oil, bell pepper and basil leaf, were wrapped in thin juliennes of crisp-fried noodles –delivering a gorgeous crunch and bursting with flavour. The water chestnut added an extra bite and the sesame brought a subtle nuttiness.

The Thai Smoke Prawn soon arrived, pan-fried with basil oyster sauce, fish sauce and lemon juice. Cooked with the shell on, the shrimp stayed juicy and flavourful, with a sweet, tangy finish and a little crunch that kept us reaching back in. Kanpoongi Chicken was hard to miss – crispy golden pieces coated in chef’s special sweet-and-spicy sauce. Crunchy, flavourful and irresistable, it struck a satisfying balance of heat and sweetness.

From the wok station part of the menu, we tried Tsing Hoi Chicken – most definitely the spiciest dish of the day! Tossed with colourful veggies in a tomato sauce and served with steamed rice, the bite-sized pieces of chicken had a fiery kick from the dry red chilli and Sichuan pepper. Some found it a tad hot but that didn’t stop them devouring it.

Next up was a lovely dish from the teppanyaki and grill selection – Black Cod Miso. Marinated for hours in sweet Saikyo miso and paired with Japanese oba leaves, the tender buttery fish had a subtle umami taste and a velvety texture, falling apart at the touch

of the fork. Served with bok choy, asparagus and mushrooms, it was simple, but packed full of delicate flavour.

As we were rating BO.SABI for its excellent offerings, my colleague insisted it wouldn’t be fair leaving without trying his favourite dish: Grill Ebi Yaki. Charcoal-grilled king prawns served with bok choy butter and garlic sauce, it proved why he swears by it. The prawns were perfectly grilled but it’s all in the sauce – smothered in butter and garlic, they were finger-licking good and didn’t disappoint.

For me, the two vegetarian stars were the Gochujang Potato and Gochujang Noodles. I absolutely love veggie Korean dishes and these reminded me why. Both used gochujang – the sweet, savoury and spicy Korean chilli paste – but each delivered it differently. The potato version saw chips smothered in a gochujang-garlic butter coating, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. I could have eaten a bowlful of these and struggled to share them! Meanwhile, the thick, silky udon noodles (my favourite) with chilli garlic and pak choy were just to die for – simple, yet packing a serious punch.

By the end of the meal, I was completely satiated – my stomach and heart full. BO.SABI delivered warmth on a plate and an ambience to match, and as I walked back into the wintry evening, I was already planning my next visit. ✤

A COASTAL SYMPHONY ON THE SIXTH

Amira Ragab discovers how Hilton Bahrain’s Seafood Night at Origin Kitchen & Culture masters the delicate art of pleasing every palate.

When coordinating a dinner for a diverse party of gourmands, the task often feels less like hosting and more like herding cats. There is always the ‘odd duck’ who shuns shellfish, the carnivorous friend who bypasses the greenery and the inevitable picky eater. However, perched atop the sixth floor of Hilton Bahrain in Juffair, Origin has managed to achieve the impossible: a seafood night that excludes no one and satisfies everyone.

From the moment you enter, the olfactory allure is immediate – a briny, buttery promise of the feast to follow. The buffet’s architecture is a choreographed journey, beginning with a visual display of iced treasures and the grand duo of roasted beef striploin and whole hamour. From here, the energy flows through a live cooking theatre into an expansive section of global comforts, including aromatic curries, crisp tempura, noodles and artisanal pastas. The path continues through an interactive mussel station and a sophisticated charcuterie enclave, before arriving at the vibrant sushi bar and a sprawling dessert gallery. This meticulously curated tapestry of global flavours concludes with a crisp salad station and a refined coffee corner, ensuring every culinary whim is met with effortless grace. It is also well worth mentioning the attention to detail, with clear allergy warnings displayed at every station. While the ocean is the star, the land holds its own. For those who prefer turf over surf, the pink beef striploin is a masterclass in roasting – tender, succulent and capable of luring even the most dedicated pescatarian towards a second helping. It sits alongside

a magnificent roasted hamour, a local delicacy that celebrates the richness of the region's waters.

The market-style display at the entrance showcases an impressive bounty of regional treasures, from shimmering sheri to robust hamour, all glistening with undeniable freshness. Guests are invited to try these prime catches prepared exactly to their preference, whether expertly grilled to retain their delicate moisture or fried to a golden, seasoned crisp. This bespoke approach ensures the vibrant, salt-of-the-sea flavours remain the undisputed centrepiece of the dining experience.

The live cooking stations are where the evening truly sings. The mussel station offers a bespoke experience but the true ‘insider secret’ is the chef’s speciality sauce: a vibrant emulsion of butter, garlic, lemon and a whisper of chilli. We found it so addictive that we coerced the chef into glazing our lobster tails and prawns with it – a decision that elevated the tender, heavenly lobster to a new gastronomic stratosphere. Even my companion, whose plate was piled high with beef and chicken – and who swears on his life that he cannot stand anything from the sea – was curious enough to try it, and he certainly didn’t regret it.

For the traditionalists, the sushi and sashimi bar is a highlight. With Norwegian salmon and tuna so fresh they practically shimmer, the platters are replenished with impressive speed. Meanwhile, the ‘odd ducks’ of the group will find sanctuary at the charcuterie and cheese station, an elegant spread that proved tempting enough for even the most disciplined among us to ‘borrow’ a few bites.

The menu continued to surprise with fragrant Thai curries, crisp tempura and artisanal pasta. Even the humble rice with peas and

mussels was transformed into a masterpiece of texture and depth. As the evening matured and the cosy-meets-chic seating encouraged us to linger, we turned our attention to the patisserie. Often, at large-scale seafood nights, the dessert is an afterthought. At Origin, it is a grand finale.

The selection serves as a sophisticated bridge between East and West. The Arabic sweets, including golden baklava and cheeseladen kunafa, satisfied the purists, while the chocolate fondue with its platter of marshmallows stared into my soul until I simply couldn’t resist. For a playful reprieve, the ice cream station is unmissable; I opted for the Yoghurt Pomegranate Ice Cream, a silken, tangy revelation that provided the perfect palate cleanser. And for the health-conscious with a sweet tooth, fresh fruits are present and ready to satisfy.

However, the true stars were the Tres Leches – a delicate, moist and fluffy classic milk cake – and the Caramel Pudding. The latter, served warm and topped with a melting scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, was a heart-warming indulgence that made us momentarily forget the concept of a calorie. It was, quite literally, a bite to die for.

Origin has managed to do what many high-end hotel restaurants struggle with: it has created a go-to ritual. By the time we finished, full up to the throat and thoroughly content, the consensus was unanimous. With its spectacular taste, immaculate service and an atmosphere that manages to be both upscale and incredibly welcoming, Origin’s Seafood Night is the ultimate Thursday destination.

Whether you are a protein-focussed carnivore, a salad aficionado or a seafood lover, you are certain to leave feeling like the guest of honour. In fact, we have already marked our calendars for a return visit next week. ✤

AUTHENTICITY MEETS ZEST

Amira Ragab finds her perfect mid-week escape at the newly unveiled LUMEE at City Centre Bahrain.

When word reached us that LUMEE had inaugurated its sixth branch in the heart of City Centre Bahrain mall, the excitement was palpable. It wasn’t long before my colleagues and I found ourselves ‘sneaking out’ for an extended lunch – after all, when LUMEE is a fiveminute drive from the office, resistance is futile. From the moment we crossed the threshold into The Souq dining area located on the second floor of the mall, the atmosphere was electric. We were greeted by a team that defines cheerfulness; our server, Victor, guided us through the digital menu with a smile that felt genuinely welcoming rather than merely professional. While the sheer variety of the menu is enough to make one’s head spin, visiting with a large group proved to be a masterstroke. It allowed us the luxury of spoiling ourselves – ordering a tableful of dishes to share, family-style.

Our culinary journey began with the Cold Sharings arriving first, headlined by a trio of hummus that could easily constitute a meal in their own right. The Classic Hummus was a silken, heartwarming standard, while the Hummus Bil-Laham – topped with smoky beef shawarma, onions and a dusting of sumac – elevated the humble chickpea to a savoury centrepiece. However, the true revelation was the Lumee Achar Hummus. Swirled with homemade lime and chilli achar (pickle), it offered a tangy, sophisticated edge that I found myself quite literally devouring. Next up was the Rummania salad, a dish I found myself returning to time and again. It offered a masterful symphony of sweet, sour and earthy notes through its vibrant blend of kale, beetroot, green apple and radish, all elevated by fresh mint, toasted sesame and the jewel-like pop of pomegranate seeds.

The Hot Sharings were equally impressive, maintaining the high tempo set by the cold starters. As an Egyptian married to a Levantine, I possess a palate honed by heritage and hold these specific cuisines to exacting, perhaps even unforgiving, standards. It is, therefore, no small praise to say that the Lamb Arayes were exceptional. They felt like a brilliant, reimagined hybrid of Egyptian rqaq and Lebanese Arayes – crisp, meat-filled pockets served with a heavenly chatni dip that added a fresh, herbaceous counterpoint. Then there was the Fattet Kubbeh, a dish of powerful, authentic depth that speaks of slow cooking and family recipes passed down through generations. For those seeking a culinary embrace with a kick, the Sambosa is essential ordering; the pastry is impossibly crisp, shattering delicately upon the first bite, but it is the spicy, lemony dipping sauce that truly steals the show, lingering pleasantly on the tongue.

Moving to the mains, the kitchen’s ability to balance tradition with modern flair became even more apparent. The star of the traditional offerings was the Tikka Lumee. Marinated in black lime – that quintessential ingredient of the Gulf which imparts a complex, musky citrus note – these tender morsels of beef were a masterclass in flavour balance. For those craving something more substantial, the Irani Chicken Tah Chin is a visual and textural masterpiece. A golden, crispy rice crust or tahdig, yields to reveal succulent chicken hidden within, the richness punctuated by the crunch of pistachios and the sweet-tart pop of zereshk (barberries). It is a dish that demands

to be photographed before it is demolished.

Even the Lamb Kabsa – a ubiquitous dish I have historically overlooked in favour of more novel options – was a revelation here. The slow-cooked lamb shoulder fell away at the mere suggestion of a fork, served on a fragrant bed of rice garnished with fresh dill and ribbons of carrot. It was comfort food elevated to the realm of fine dining. We were fortunate enough to be afforded an audience with Chef Karim and Chef Simon, the culinary architects behind this feast. Their passion for local sourcing was evident as they explained the alchemy behind the Grilled Hammour Fillet. They utilise fresh, locally caught fish, marinating it simply in onion and lemon to respect the delicate flesh, before serving it on a bed of grilled vegetables with an addictive chilli-coriander sauce that I would happily pair with just about anything.

Despite our initial protests that we could not possibly manage another bite, the chefs persuaded us to sample the desserts – a concession we were wise to make. The Um Ali, often a heavy, cloying pudding, was here rendered with an ingenious hint of lemon. It was a flavour profile so unique and refreshing that it surely deserves a patent. The Rangina was cleverly reimagined with Lotus crumbs and topped with Karak Ice Cream, a dream for any sweet tooth that bridges the gap between traditional dates and modern indulgence.

The pièce de résistance, however, was the Rahash Cake. A dizzying fusion of East and West, it featured a moist vanilla sponge layered with a rich tahini Chantilly and cloaked in candied sesame seeds. Drizzled with a decadent Rahash sauce, it provided a mind-blowing conclusion to a spectacular meal, balancing the nuttiness of sesame with the lightness of the sponge.

Lumee City Centre Bahrain has proven itself to be far more than just a convenient lunch spot for the weary office worker. It is a vibrant destination for those who demand soul in their food, a place where the authenticity of the past meets the zest of the present. As we stepped back out into the reality of the afternoon, we did so with the satisfaction of those who have discovered a secret. I, for one, shall be a very frequent guest. ✤

SOLO TRAVEL

Travelling alone is one of the most rewarding ways to see the world. It allows you to move at your own pace, be spontaneous and experience places on your own terms. It’s about freedom, confidence and stepping out of your comfort zone. From high-tech metropolises to ancient mountain trails, check out these solo-friendly destinations that prove you are your own best travel companion.

TOKYO, JAPAN

Tokyo is often considered the gold standard for solo travel, especially for those venturing away alone for the first time. The city feels reassuringly calm and orderly and the vibe is one of safe, neon-lit discovery. With spotless streets, clear signage and efficient public transport, it feels like a personal concierge.

One of Tokyo’s biggest strengths is how comfortably it accommodates individuals. Whether it’s the futuristic ‘capsule hotels’ that turn sleep into a sci-fi experience or the iconic Ichiran ramen booths designed for private slurping, this is a culture that respects privacy and quietude.

Tokyo is also great for independent exploration. Start your morning with a solo meditation at the Meiji Jingu Shrine, stroll through traditional neighbourhoods like Yanaka, visiting small historic temples, or explore museums in Ueno Park. Spend the afternoons getting lost in the curated chaos of Daikanyama’s bookstores, browsing shops in Harajuku and the vintage treasures of Shimokitazawa or geeking out over manga at Akihabara – the centre of Japanese otaku culture. Evenings can also be enjoyed solo with ‘Golden Gai’ bar crawls, where tiny six-seater pubs make it easy to strike up a conversation with a local bartender or a fellow wanderer. Tokyo’s greatest appeal is how comfortable it feels to be alone in the city, making it an ideal destination for anyone seeking solitude without isolation.

Experience: safe, clean, great transportation, solofriendly dining

LISBON, PORTUGAL

Lisbon is another city that’s almost tailor-made for solo travel. Compact and easy to navigate, it feels less like a capital city and more like a series of villages interconnected by rolling hills. Wandering without a plan is part of the experience here, whether you’re strolling along the Tagus River, riding the iconic yellow trams or exploring tilecovered alleys that open onto miradouros (viewpoints). Neighbourhoods such as Alfama, Graça and Campo de Ourique feel lived-in and welcoming rather than overly polished. Príncipe Real offers chic, trendy boutiques and tranquil gardens, while Lisbon’s high-end hostels are known for communal home-cooked dinners shared with fellow travellers. Café culture plays a central role in daily life and makes travelling alone feel natural. It’s easy to spend an hour over a typical Portuguese coffee break of bica (a strong espresso) and a pastel de nata (custard tart), striking up conversations with strangers. Walking tours, tram rides and local markets are a great way to explore Lisbon, while surf schools and group experiences along the coast provide easy opportunities to meet others. For something more contemporary, explore the hip and creative LX Factory for offbeat shops, art galleries, restaurants and bars. Come evening, head to a Fado house in Alfama or Bairro Alto to experience ‘saudade’ – soulful music of longing and nostalgia sung

Lisbon shows how solo travel can feel relaxed and grounding, offering the freedom to move between solitude and sociability with ease.

Experience: Walkable, great food, safe, welcoming and friendly

NORTHERN THAILAND & LAOS

Northern Thailand and Laos form one of the most approachable solo travel routes in Southeast Asia. Long geared to independent travellers, with guesthouses, cafés and hostels designed around shared spaces, travelling alone in this region rarely feels intimidating or isolating.

Chiang Mai is a common starting point, offering a gentle introduction with meditation centres, night markets and cooking classes that naturally bring people together. From there, many solo travellers head north to Pai, where you can enjoy chilled cafés, hot springs and relaxed evenings. Crossing into Laos changes the pace, particularly in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located along the Mekong River, this town is renowned for its beautiful gilded temples and French colonial architecture. Start the day early to witness the Tak Bat, the alms-giving ritual where saffron-robed monks silently make their way through the streets. Days can be spent cycling to turquoise waterfalls like Kuang Si, learning traditional weaving at Ock

with a Portuguese guitar.

Pop Tok or participating in a Baci blessing ceremony at a local guesthouse.

Laos is remarkably safe and transport between destinations is affordable, with shared minivans and boat rides often leading to chance friendships along the way. This route builds confidence gently – it’s social without being overwhelming and ideal for solo wanderers who want space without feeling disconnected.

Experience: Affordable, easy socialising, natural beauty, culture

PERU, SOUTH AMERICA

Peru is the ultimate destination for the solo traveller seeking more of a physical and spiritual challenge. From adjusting to the altitude to navigating long travel days and demanding terrain, the challenging experience is part of the draw. Moving through the soaring Andes on foot, with ancient paths literally underfoot, is an adventure unlike any other and offers a sense of accomplishment that lasts a lifetime.

Cusco acts as a natural base camp, filled with hostels, cafés and small restaurants geared towards solo travellers. Shared physical effort is a great icebreaker between strangers and it’s easy to join group hikes to Machu Picchu or guided trips through the Sacred Valley, including stops at places like the Maras salt mines. Reliable transport options such as Peru Hop buses and social co-living hubs like Selina also make independent travel more manageable. Away from the mountains, alone time can be equally rewarding – whether it’s counter dining at a cevichería in Lima’s Barranco district, bargaining for alpaca wool in a Pisac market or starting the day with sunrise yoga overlooking the Urubamba River.

While Peru admittedly requires more planning than some destinations, it offers a strong sense of achievement in return. For solo travellers ready to push themselves, it delivers perspective, resilience and connections formed through shared experiences.

Experience: Affordable, adventurous, stunning landscape, great hostels and tours ✤

A GRAND ADDRESS FOR A GRAND HOTEL

A journey to London led the fact team to one of Mayfair’s most enduring hotel addresses — where heritage, comfort and location come together with quiet confidence.

“the hotel immediately announced itself as a classic London address — assured, established and unmistakably part of the city.”

Arriving in London always carries a certain anticipation. Even after a long flight from the Middle East, there is something about the city that feels instantly familiar yet full of promise. Perhaps it’s the rhythm of the streets, or the way history and modern life sit side by side so easily. Our arrival at Sheraton Grand London Park Lane brought that feeling into focus. Set on Piccadilly, directly opposite Green Park and at the edge of Mayfair, the hotel immediately announced itself as a classic London address — assured, established and unmistakably part of the city. Inside, the tone softened. We found check-in calm and welcoming, offering a smooth transition from travel into stay. It was the kind of arrival that allowed us to pause, take in our surroundings and feel settled before heading up to the room.

An Art Deco Legacy, Comfortably Worn

The hotel carried its Art Deco heritage with confidence. That sense of history was present throughout, from the architecture to the detailing, but it never felt overstated. Instead, it formed a subtle backdrop to a property that seemed current, composed and well suited to today’s travellers. During a brief tour, we saw a series of well-connected public spaces designed for both gathering and retreat. From quieter corners to more social areas, we felt a consistent sense of balance — lively enough to feel connected to the city, yet calm enough to step away from it when needed. The tour unfolded at an easy pace, offering a clearer sense of how the building worked as a whole. We were also shown some of the hotel’s higher-category accommodation, including the Sheraton Club Rooms and the Grand Suite, which stood out for their sense of luxury, space and flexibility.

Rooms Designed for Real Rest

Our room reflected that same sense of ease for us. Design elements nodded gently to the Art Deco era, paired with a neutral palette that felt timeless rather than thematic. It was a setting that encouraged us to properly settle in, rather than simply pass through.

The Sheraton Signature Sleep Experience Bed quickly proved its worth, delivering the kind of rest that was genuinely restorative. The bathroom followed the same calm, considered design, finished in crisp monochrome tones and stocked with thoughtful amenities that reinforced the hotel’s sense of quality.

Palm Court and a London Ritual

Palm Court stood out for us as one of the hotel’s defining spaces, and its recent refurbishment gave it a renewed presence during our visit. Reimagined ahead of the hotel’s centenary celebrations, the lounge felt refreshed while remaining true to its Art Deco origins.

The restored stained-glass, domed ceiling immediately drew the eye, while updated finishes and lighting added warmth and depth. Afternoon tea felt unhurried and refined during our visit — less about formality, more about enjoying the

moment. It was easy to understand why Palm Court has long been a gathering place for both visitors and locals.

Dining at Mercante

Dinner took us to Mercante, the hotel’s Italian-inspired restaurant. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, with interiors influenced by traditional Italian markets. A hand-drawn map of Italy stretching across one wall added character without overwhelming the space.

The menu focussed on approachable, well-executed dishes designed for sharing and conversation. After travel and settling in, it felt like exactly the right pace. Breakfast the following morning offered a calm and comfortable start to the day before stepping back out into the city.

Smith & Whistle: A Local Touch

Smith & Whistle, the hotel’s bar, carried a distinctly local feel despite its Park Lane address. Inspired by a fictional detective story, it combined classic comfort food with British craft hops and a seasonal mixes list. We found the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming — an easy place to end the evening without feeling the need to venture further.

Facilities That Support the Stay

We found the hotel’s facilities practical and well considered. The 24-hour fitness centre suited guests moving between

time zones, while the historic event spaces, including the Art Deco ballroom, reflected its longstanding role in London’s social and cultural life.

During our time at the property, these spaces felt thoughtfully integrated into the overall stay. Everything was easy to access and well maintained, supporting the flow of our time there and allowing us to focus on enjoying London rather than managing the practicalities of being away.

London on the Doorstep

One of our lasting impressions was how naturally the hotel connected us to the city itself. With Green Park directly opposite and Mayfair within easy reach, stepping out felt effortless. We enjoyed spending time in the surrounding area, knowing that returning to the hotel meant returning to comfort and familiarity.

When it was time to fly home, the feeling was one of quiet satisfaction. What stood out for us was that the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane didn’t rely on spectacle or trend. Instead, it offered reassurance, heritage and a strong sense of place — qualities that stayed with us long after departure.

NOW YOU SEE IT

Swedish brand Axel Arigato's current collection, Did You See? pushes the boundaries of texture, colour, proportion and perception with fresh streetwear style that urges us to look again at the details.

The footwear and ready-to-wear pieces aim to visually entertain with bold silhouettes, reversible designs and innovative material techniques.

Under the creative direction of Jens Werner, this collection aims to disrupt our habitual online scrolling obsessions and monotone culture. Instead, it offers striking and unexpected designs, playful visuals and 'look-twice' details that compel viewers to pause, engage and share.

Footwear innovation is at the heart of the collection, with allnew unisex styles that push the boundaries of design. The Mule Family marks an evolution in the brand's lineup, offering an open-back silhouette that retains the practical foundation of the brand's signature trainer soles. Blending leather and denim materials with refined piping details, the mules reinterpret casual footwear with a modern, slip-on design that remains true to Axel Arigato's design universe.

The Tact Runner is the first of a series of new low-profile silhouettes - iterated in fluffy hairy suede or distressed denim, while the Slow Runner reimagines the Marathon trainer, utilising the silhouette's original upper and fusing it with an entirely new outsole.

Womenswear is headlined by the debut of Eris, a striking new trainer with a low profile and flat sole, crafted with interlocking suede and leather profile panels.

Menswear reimagines traditional knitwear, with oversized designs that experiment with form and technique. Varsity jackets now feature intricately woven sleeves, while puffers and gilets replace conventional quilting with dramatic knit-inspired patterns. Crew

neck jumpers are elevated with fabric panels that interlock like woven threads or flecked marl jumpers incorporate hand-woven details that bring added richness to their knit textures.

Chore and Bomber jackets, pieces that traditionally form a man's outerwear wardrobe, are redefined with a fashionable edge. Woven collars or dual front fastenings offer a creative, designsavvy perspective. Texture is also experimented with – jeans evolve through gradient techniques, whilst classic rugby polos come in wool, with hand applique branding and exposed thread. Women’s ready-to-wear pieces play with subtle yet captivating details, such as the hand-knitted Ana Fluffy tank tops, accompanying soft yarn Maria tanks or the Frame jumpers, each complete with amplified ribbed necklines and shoulders for unexpected volume. They are styled effortlessly with the Thea cotton blazers that feature frayed hems along their lapel for a raw, modern edge. Ribbed knit cardigans feature elongated cuffs and accentuated collars, finished with hand-stitched 'Arigato' branding. ✤

Some great new sounds for you to check out this month.

PRIZEFIGHTER

The group’s sixth studio album, co-produced with Aaron Dessner, is due out on February 20 and features collaborations with the likes of Hozier, Chris Stapleton and Gracie Abrams. According to the band, it features a return to their barebones folksy roots and the title track is certainly an example of that with pared back harmonies over heartrending lyrics that are reminiscent of an earlier and simpler sound.

WEMEANIT,MAN!

The latest offering from New York-based Gogol Bordello strays just a little from their gypsy-punk roots to flirt with hints of techno and hardcore. But long-term fans will not be disappointed; the 12-track album features plenty of punchy, energetic offerings with the much-loved social commentary built into the lyrics. There’s also a remix of the Ukraine protest song Solidarity produced by Nick Launay.

THEROMANTIC

The very, very long-awaited release is the singer’s first solo album since 2016’s 24K Magic and it’s been in development since at least 2023. The first single I Just Might dropped on January 9 showcasing sugarsweet vocals, once again, reminiscent of the heydays of Motown. The rest of the track listing is, thus far, a mystery but we’re betting there’ll be some dancefloor fillers in there and maybe a crooner or two, going by the title.

SOARING HIGH!

Red Bull athletes Dani Román and Fred Fugen achieved a world first recently, not only putting themselves but also the Kingdom on the map for their incredible synchronised wingsuit crossing through the Bahrain World Trade Center. Apple Sharma caught up with the duo to get a firsthand account of this exciting feat, how it all came about and what made this adrenaline-pumping jump possible.

fact: Congratulations on the jump. How does it feel to achieve a world-first – synchronised wingsuit crossing through a building?

DR & FF: Thank you! It was a dream we’ve had ever since we first came to Bahrain. Achieving this feels like a huge satisfaction, not just for us as athletes but for the entire Red Bull team, the government, the Olympic Committee and everyone who pushed so hard to make it happen. From an athletic point of view, it was a very tricky project, so we’re incredibly happy that everything worked out so well.

fact: What made you choose Bahrain to attempt something this ambitious and what makes your partnership successful?

DR & FF: From the very first time we visited Bahrain and saw the building, we knew we wanted to do something special there. The support from everyone involved in Bahrain, the Red Bull team, the government and the Olympic Committee, has been incredible. They trusted us from the beginning, shared the same vision and had the same passion for the project. That level of trust and collaboration is what truly made this possible.

fact: Can you share your process – how do you turn an idea or a visual concept into an exact flight path where there’s no room for error?

DR & FF: The first step was defining the flight path: distance, speed, angles and timing. We trained at a small airfield in France, where we used a drone as a reference point to simulate the centre of the building. We completed around 40 jumps to finetune all the parameters. Once we had all the numbers dialled in, we moved the project to Bahrain.

fact: Flying this close together at high speed is intense. What was the hardest part of staying perfectly in sync, and how much of that comes down to instinct versus planning?

DR & FF: Everything comes down to training. By the time we reached the building, we already knew the timing, speed and exact execution required. Wind conditions were critical; we needed very low wind or no wind at all. When that window finally came, we were ready and made it happen.

fact: At what point during preparation do you know a jump like this is truly possible?

DR & FF: That moment came during training in France. The first jumps were all about figuring out how to make it work, timing, speed and positioning. After around 10 to 15 jumps, we had a clear sequence and method. From there, it was all about consistency and waiting for the right conditions.

fact: Once you landed, what was the very first thing you said to each other?

DR & FF: We were just completely stoked. Everything worked perfectly. After so much training and effort from everyone involved, we were just incredibly happy with how well it went.

fact: What’s next on the agenda? Are there more world firsts coming, and could we see you back in Bahrain for another one?

DR & FF: There are always many ideas in our minds. We’re

definitely looking forward to coming back to Bahrain. There’s so much potential there and the people are incredibly supportive and motivated to make ambitious projects happen.

fact: How would you describe Bahrain from the air?

DR & FF: It felt surreal. Flying over the city on a black hawk helicopter and seeing Bahrain from above was an unforgettable experience. ✤

THE JUMP

After two years of rigorous planning, two of the world’s renowned wingsuit athletes, Dani Román and Fred Fugen, achieved a world-first with a synchronised, headon crossing between the Bahrain World Trade Center. Launching from a Black Hawk helicopter high above Manama, they split apart, turned back in from opposite sides and choregraphed their approach so that they crossed the midpoint between the twin towers at the exact same moment.

KEY STATS

● Jump altitude: 1,200m

● Individual speed: 220km/h (each)

● Combined closing speed: 440km/h (over 120m/s)

● Separation at crossing point: 10m

● Height of the crossing: 40m above the building’s wind turbines

What We’re (Still) Talking About?

Eat Your Beats

Music consumption has officially taken a strange turn. At Las Vegas’ CES (Consumer Electronics Show) last month, the company Lollipop Star unveiled a high-tech lollipop that plays music through your teeth. Instead of speakers, it uses bone-conduction technology, sending sound vibrations through the jaw directly to the inner ear. Each flavour comes preloaded with a track from artists including Ice Spice and Akon, meaning

the only way to listen is to bite down and commit. Priced at under USD10, it’s clearly designed as a novelty rather than a serious audio device. Early reactions described the sensation as odd, slightly uncomfortable and difficult to explain to anyone watching nearby. While it’s unlikely to replace headphones anytime soon, it does raise questions about how far brands will go to make content more ‘immersive’. Either way, people will finally know your taste in music.

Save Your Soles

LEGO and Crocs have teamed up for a collaboration that has divided the internet almost instantly. The result is a brick-shaped clog complete with oversized LEGO studs and a detachable minifigure accessory, designed to lean fully into the idea of playful selfexpression. Online reactions, however, have been swift and unforgiving. Comment sections filled up with jokes questioning how anyone is meant

to walk or drive while wearing them. One viral remark read, “If my friend wore these, we would break up,” and others compared the shoes to actual building blocks strapped to feet. While the brands insist the design is meant to be fun, many see it as fashion irony taken a step too far. Love them or hate them, the clogs have succeeded in doing what most collaborations aim for: grabbing attention, even if it’s mostly through ridicule.

The Voice of Reason

A popular Dutch hops company has declared war on long voice notes. The brand has launched a WhatsApp bot aimed at curbing never-ending audio messages by pushing conversations back into the real world. The initiative, titled Could Have Been a H*******, is currently being tested in Brazil, with plans to roll it out in other markets later on. To take part, WhatsApp users aged 18 and over can forward any voice note they’ve received that runs longer

than three minutes to a private, encrypted bot. They’ll then receive a message pointing out it “could have been a H*******,” along with a voucher for free hops and suggestions for nearby spots to meet the friend in person. The campaign taps into growing frustration around voice notes, with billions sent daily and many people feeling they’ve become self-centred and lost the essence of socialising. The message is clear: if it’s going to be a monologue, it might as well come with a pint.
