PACKERMANN AT PEXELS

Editor’s Letter

And here we go again, another year to have high hopes for, to believe that our lives (and ourselves) are going to change for the better. A recent YouGov survey in the United States found that the most common New Year's resolution for 2026 (among 25 options included in the study) is to exercise more. Well, here we are, it's January 2026, time to put this plan into motion. If that's also your goal for this year, we bring 50 ideas to help you add more movement to your life, with tips, trending workouts and wellness-focussed insights, such as spa treatments to try, destinations that offer wellbeing packages and books on the theme. I love running and intend to add a lot of kilometres to my new running shoes (a Christmas gift to myself), but treatments and books sound like good add-ons in this wellness journey. Winter fashion and colours of the year come to kick-start our 2026 wardrobe. Still in the fashion mood, we spoke to Dalal and Fatema Alkhaja, the sisters behind the Bahraini brand Touchless. And in the embelishment side of life, the jewellery and watches universe is as shiny as always. In the beauty section, healthy clothing using techno-fabrics is a fascinating read. So is our review of the sound healing and meridian massage session we had at The Ritz-Carlton Spa, The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. We are all for women's power. This month, we had the pleasure of interviewing the six winners of the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Middle East Regional Young Talents Program. The initiative recognises the groundbreaking work of Arab women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and we are proud to help spread the word. As travel enthusiasts, we jumped at the opportunity to experience winter in Vienna at the Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna Hotel – you can read all about it in our Travel Escapes pages. As life is made of enjoyable moments, we delighted our palates at Mei Ling for a journey through Chinese flavours and test-drove the exceptional Ferrari Amalfi in a different scenario: Portugal, thanks to an exclusive invitation from Euro Motors Bahrain and Ferrari Middle East. 2026, we are ready for you!

Embellished footwear adds an eye-catching detail to your look. Mach & Mach created delicate sandals adorned with pearly beads, even on the upper sole – a perfect pick for those ladies with pretty tootsies.

WHY IS EVERYONE OBSESSED WITH

PEARLS?

Faux pearls (not the cultured ones) are everywhere, and even Gen Zs are embracing them in their looks. There is something about these beads that makes us think of wealth. However, the fake ones we are loving right now have a touch of camp, yet are oddly comforting.

Cardigans are frequently adorned with beads. This Maje black number showcases a classic: knit + fake pearls. The collar detail adds a cute touch that reminds us of little girls and stylish grandmas. 18

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Jimmy Choo also opted to decorate its mules with shiny pearls with one big ball in the centre for a fashionable twist. These go straight to our 2026 must-have list!

Jewels have always been the ultimate place for pearls (we are talking about real ones here), but costume jewellery also likes to play with faux options. These Tory Burch earrings are daring yet sophisticated add-ons to evening gowns or casual outfits.

McQueen is not exactly where you expect to see pearls; the brand is a bit subversive and too punk for them, but still, here we are. This bracelet with a shiny skull is proof that fashion can be good, bad or both.

From iconic inspirations to limited releases, here’s what’s made it to our monthly round-up.

Fashion at the Top The Chamonix-born skiwear and lifestyle label Perfect Moment has collaborated with BWT Alpine F1 Team on a winter capsule that brings together the worlds of both sports. Rooted in technical design, the collection merges Perfect Moment’s skiwear expertise with Alpine’s bold racing identity, drawing parallels between the precision of Formula 1 and high-performance winter wear. The campaign was shot at the Alpine Enstone factory, including inside the team’s wind tunnel, a first for a fashion brand. The setting highlights the shared focus on speed, energy and technical accuracy that underpins both disciplines. The ensemble features ski jackets, ski suits and knitwear in Alpine F1 Team’s signature blue and pink palette, accented with circuit-line graphics and subtle garage-inspired details. Signature Perfect Moment silhouettes are finished with Alpine branding, embroidered patches and considered trims. Knitwear, après-ski essentials and accessories complete the offering, designed to move seamlessly from the slopes to off-duty mountainous settings.

German Style Meets Protective Cases The German luxury brand MCM unveils a new collaboration with lifestyle tech accessories company CASETiFY. The capsule takes inspiration from the fashion house’s ongoing design narrative, ‘From Munich to Mars’, a dreamy, futuristic journey that starts at the brand’s birthplace and reaches space. Spanning phone cases, earbud cases and MagSafe cardholders, the capsule transforms everyday tech into collectable statements of style. Central to the collection is MCM’s well-known visual language: the classic Visetos monogram and the Rabot character, the brand’s robot-rabbit hybrid. The popular print – featuring MCM’s diamond logo inspired by the brand’s Bavarian heritage – is reimagined for phone cases in tan, black and pink. The Rabot shines in customisable cases available in blue, pink and clear. The partnership merges functionality and fashion, blending CASETiFY’s technical precision with MCM’s signature craftsmanship.

Almost 20 years after their first collaboration in 2005, Stella McCartney and H&M are reuniting for a Spring 2026 collection that pairs signature design codes with a strong sustainability focus. The collection draws on Stella’s archives, reinterpreting iconic silhouettes and house hallmarks using certified, responsible materials, many of which are recycled. Beyond the clothing, the collaboration introduces an Insights Board that brings together voices from across fashion to explore sustainable solutions, animal welfare and innovation in textiles. The initiative is designed to foster dialogue, challenge industry norms and showcase actionable ideas that go further than conventional design collaborations. “Reworking pieces from my archive brought back so much energy and joy. This second partnership feels like a chance to look at how far we’ve come on sustainability, cruelty-free practices and conscious designs – and to stay honest about how far we still have to go, together,” said Stella McCartney.

To Commemorate an Icon To mark the enduring legacy of Umm Kulthum (iconic Egyptian singer, songwriter and actress), Azza Fahmy Jewellery has released a special collection in her honour, alongside bespoke pieces created for the film El Sett. The capsule draws on decades of creative inspiration from her music, presence and poetry, translating these elements into jewellery that tells a story of elegance and timelessness. Signature twisted wirework, perfected in Azza Fahmy’s Cairo workshop, forms the backbone of the collection, while calligraphy, such as the iconic Enta Omri – My Eternity transforms lyrics into wearable art. Standout pieces include the Suma Chandelier Earrings, which reinterpret Umm Kulthum’s signature dangling silhouette in 18-carat gold and sterling silver, combining graceful elongated lines with the house’s characteristic craftsmanship. The collaboration with the filmmakers also included curation and consultation, ensuring authenticity and artistic integrity in each piece. The collection stands as both a tribute to an Arab cultural icon and a celebration of jewellery as a form of storytelling.

When in Rome… Season 5 of Emily in Paris arrives with a chic new capsule collection from FENDI. Designed to capture the show’s playful sophistication, the limited-edition range features two Baguette bags and a Peekaboo crafted in tapestry-effect fabrics that blend the iconic FF logo with Art Deco-inspired polka dots. Colour-block options include brown and pink or dove and mint green, adding a fresh, modern edge. The capsule is highlighted on-screen as Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, carries the Baguette bag during her Roman adventures. Key locations include the FENDI headquarters at Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana and the Palazzo FENDI flagship store. Available in a limited release at select boutiques worldwide and online, the collection offers fans the chance to bring a piece of the series’ signature style into their wardrobe while celebrating the Roman brand’s enduring presence in the show.

DALAL AND FATEMA ALKHAJA

OHLALA VOICES

Blurring

the Lines of

Fashion Technology and

Innovation continues to define OHLALA’s fashion landscape. This month, we spoke to the sister duo, Dalal and Fatema Alkhaja of Touchless, whose 3D-printed bags have taken them from a home experiment in Bahrain to international fashion platforms. 38

www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA VOICES

OHLALA – How did Touchless begin and what first drew you both to experimenting with 3D printing? Dalal and Fatema Alkhaja – Touchless began during the pandemic when everything slowed down and we finally had the space to explore something new as a family. Our father introduced us to 3D printing at home and it didn’t feel intimidating – it felt like a challenge we wanted to understand. We experimented with small functional items first, and that curiosity naturally grew into a desire to create something more meaningful. That urge is what shaped us as a family long before the brand existed. It’s what pushed us from simple tools into a full design practice. OHLALA – With your different backgrounds, how do each of you contribute to the brand’s creative and business decisions? Dalal – Fatema has a finance background and I am an interior architect. People assume that because of my speciality, I handle most of the creative decisions, but that’s actually Fatema. Our roles are split in a very natural way. We both work on strategy because the brand is built on our passions and we both contribute to the creative direction. Fatema is a true fashion enthusiast. She cares deeply about how a piece feels in real life, how functional it is and whether it resonates with the person carrying it. I focus more on implementing structure, operations, planning and ensuring creative ideas become a real product. The balance works for us. OHLALA – Your father plays a key role in production. What has it been like building a family-run brand together? Dalal and Fatema – It’s been grounding. Our father taught us how to use the machines and how to understand the material properly. Working as a family means everything is hands-on – the problem-solving, the decision-making, the late nights. There’s a sense of accountability because we’re building something that represents all of us. It’s not always smooth, but it’s very real and it keeps us connected to why we started.

“We experimented with small functional items first and that curiosity naturally grew into wanting to create something more meaningful.” – Dalal and Fatema Alkhaja

www.ohlala-magazine.com

39

OHLALA VOICES OHLALA – The Prism bag was your starting point. What inspired that first design and how did you realise 3D printing could move from functional tools into a full fashion concept? Dalal and Fatema – The first spark actually came from our mother. She came home from a hospital appointment and casually asked if we could print something for her that she could wash easily and take with her. We treated it like a challenge: could we design something beautiful to replace her everyday bag that was also functional enough for medical appointments? That became the starting point. The moment we held the first version, we understood that 3D-printed pieces didn’t have to look or behave like ‘tech’. They could be soft in form, lightweight and wearable, and that realisation opened the door to building a complete fashion concept. OHLALA – How do you incorporate sustainability into your products? Dalal and Fatema – Our process is built around reducing waste. We print on demand, recycle our misprints and repurpose our materials. Because we print locally and in-house, we avoid excess production and keep our footprint tight. Sustainability for us is about being intentional, not about claiming perfection. OHLALA – The brand has already travelled from Bahrain to platforms like Paris Fashion Week and Selfridges. How did this international exposure happen? Dalal and Fatema – It happened through people connecting with the designs before they connected with the brand. The bags caught attention because they looked different, sparking conversations among editors, buyers and creatives who were curious about how they were made. A lot of opportunities came from people believing in us early on and sharing our work in the right rooms. It grew very organically. OHLALA – Your bags are known for being playful, artistic and experimental. What sparks your ideas for new textures and colour palettes? Dalal and Fatema – We’re inspired by the idea of making something that feels almost impossible – shapes that look frozen in time, textures that mimic the flow of fabric even though they’re printed layer by layer. Our brother, who is an architect, works closely with us on these forms and he sees each one as a small architectural study. That perspective pushes us to treat each bag like a structural piece, not just an accessory. OHLALA – Congratulations on winning the Fashion Trust Arabia Fashion Tech Award in 2025. What does this recognition mean to you both personally and professionally? Dalal and Fatema – It means a lot. Personally, it feels like a moment we’ll always remember because it validated years of work we’ve done as a family. Professionally, it pushed us to believe even more in the role 3D printing can play in fashion. It’s given us confidence, visibility and the motivation to keep growing the brand in a way that feels true to our values. @touchlessbh

JEWELLERY EDIT

A UNIQUE

TRAJECTORY Boucheron’s Creative Director, Claire Choisne, updates the Flèche collection with eight new original designs.

42

www.ohlala-magazine.com

JEWELLERY EDIT

T

he arrow was featured in Boucheron’s earliest designs in 1860, and it ranks among the maison’s most emblematic motifs. Its symbolism varies, ranging from a messenger of love, piercing hearts or evoking a mighty warrior. Today’s Flèche collection encapsulates the vital energy of those who live life fearlessly, celebrating their individuality. Its aesthetics have changed over the years: on some, the feathers mimic the peacock’s colourful patterns, while others appear to have caught on foliage along the way. It has also drawn on various artistic movements, such as modern Orientalism, with arrows adorned with Egyptian motifs and in 1920, it became more stylised, embracing the codes of Art Deco and incorporating materials like jade. No matter the design language, one thing remained constant: the technical virtuosity of Boucheron’s artisans. Marrying inventiveness with the finest jewellery savoir-faire, the maison continues to reinvent this timeless symbol. The new creations are inspired by the item’s balance of power and finesse. The arrow remains steadfast in its aim and now accommodates itself to the wearer: it can coil around a finger or a wrist, glide smoothly around a neck or be worn over the heart as a brooch. This collection comprises eight genderless, monochrome diamond pieces with a resolutely contemporary feel. In a nod to Boucheron’s historic archives, the arrow appears in its purest form as a brooch: one very dainty, the other an XXL design that juxtaposes round and baguette-cut diamonds. Next, there are two rings: the first encircles one finger in round diamonds, and the second is more sculptural, sitting across three fingers embracing the delicacy of feathers (rendered in round diamonds) with the rigour of a ridge formed of baguette-cut stones. The collection also includes a supple necklace and bracelet duo – both designed to slip on and wear without a clasp – along with a pendant and a pair of hoop earrings, all set with round diamonds. The virtuosity of Boucheron’s artisans is visibly showcased in the delicate crafting of the metal, the meticulous setting of the diamonds and the precision of every line. Each piece has been worked in an almost sculptural way to express and magnify the arrow’s dynamic motion, transforming a simple line into a manifesto of modernity.

HAUTE HORLOGERIE

GEM SET IN

PRECISION Vacheron Constantin expands the Overseas line with the Self-Winding High Jewellery, presented for the first time as a fully diamond-set watch.

44

www.ohlala-magazine.com

HAUTE HORLOGERIE

O

riginally introduced in 2023, the Overseas 35mm was designed to offer a more streamlined take on Vacheron Constantin’s sport-chic collection, while retaining the aesthetic elements and functionality of its larger counterparts. The Overseas SelfWinding High Jewellery marks the first time this 35mm format has been fully gem-set, presented in two new references crafted in 18-carat white gold and 18-carat 5N pink gold. Conceived to suit a wide range of wrists, the 35mm case measures 8.43mm in thickness and retains the collection’s emphasis on comfort and versatility. While compact in size, the watch preserves the technical and aesthetic elements found in larger Overseas models, including water resistance tested to five bar (50 metres) and a transparent sapphire crystal caseback. The crown is screwed down, reinforcing everyday practicality despite the high jewellery execution. Gem-setting is the highlight of these new editions. Each piece is adorned with a total of 1,430 diamonds, amounting to approximately 12.58 carats. Vacheron Constantin draws on a long-standing tradition in the métier d’art of gem-setting, a craft the maison has pursued since the 19th century. The bezel’s Maltese cross motif (a signature inspired by the brand’s emblem) is emphasised through 60 invisibly set baguette-cut diamonds. This demanding technique requires the creation of an ultra-fine gold framework, hidden beneath the stones, with tolerances measured to hundredths of a millimetre to ensure a seamless surface.

In contrast to the serene geometry of the baguette-cut diamonds, the dial and bracelet feature snow-set, brilliant-cut diamonds. The dial alone is set with 314 brilliant-cut diamonds, arranged to minimise visible metal and maximise light reflection. Against this diamond-set backdrop, time is displayed with restraint: hours, minutes, central seconds and a date aperture. Twelve baguette-cut diamonds serve as hour markers, while the 18-carat gold hands are highlighted with blue Super-LumiNova for legibility. The snow-setting continues across the lugs and the 18-carat gold bracelet, which is set with 884 brilliant-cut diamonds. Each bracelet link is set individually before assembly, reflecting the level of precision involved. As with all Overseas models, the bracelet is equipped with a self-interchangeable system and an easy-fit micro-adjustment, allowing for subtle sizing changes without tools. Each model is delivered with two additional straps: one in white rubber, the other in shiny alligator leather. The white gold version is paired with a brilliant blue alligator strap, while the pink gold model comes with a fuchsia alligator version. The interchangeable pin buckle, matching the case metal, is set with 62 brilliant-cut diamonds and can be swapped between straps without tools. Powering the timepiece is the Manufacture calibre 1088/1, an automatic movement comprising 144 components that offers a 40-hour power reserve and includes a stop-seconds function for precise time setting. Visible through the caseback, the movement is finished with Côtes de Genève, bevelled bridges and a 22-carat gold rotor completed with a compass rose.

The Power of

Hyaluronic

ACID

In the search for ultimate products to enhance skin quality, Dr. Barbara Sturm’s HYALURONIC SERUM is a strong contender.

I

t seems that chasing a younger complexion is a common goal among many women and, to help them in this mission, many brands create unique products that serve as little warriors. Dr. Barbara Sturm’s HYALURONIC SERUM is one of them. Packed with an optimal concentration of hyaluronic molecules and biofermented purslane, it acts as a super hydrator, activating and sustaining the skin’s three youth factors: hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin. These three essential elements are the building blocks of firm, plump and hydrated skin. Hyaluronic acid binds moisture, collagen provides structure and strength and elastin ensures flexibility and resilience. The key ingredients in the serum are long-chain hyaluronic molecules that stabilise the skin’s protective barrier and plump fine lines and wrinkles to deliver a smoothing and firming effect. Small- and mediumchain hyaluronic molecules hydrate deeper layers of the skin, optimising natural collagen and elastin reserves to enhance firmness and support skin health and functionality. And, last but not least, biofermented purslane, an anti-ageing source that boosts the skin’s antioxidant supply and restores vitality. “My HYALURONIC SERUM is like the ‘white T-shirt’ of any skincare routine. I packed my proprietary formulation with a high concentration of low-, medium- and high-weight hyaluronic acid molecules that provide instant hydration at the surface and deeper skin layers, improve skin barrier function and help reduce the formation of wrinkles,” said Dr Barbara Sturm. Hyaluronic acid is a vital component of the skin; in addition to what has already been mentioned, it also reduces water loss and protects against environmental stressors. As we age, its production declines, leading to dryness, fine lines and dullness, meaning that supplying our complexions with it is a crucial step toward a younger face.

Brooke Bergé, Division Manager at Ali Bin Ali Beauty, explains further.

Beauty Spotlight

Every month, we will share an insight into Ali Bin Ali Beauty, a new venture changing the beauty scene in the GCC. From thoughtfully curated brand narratives to expert-led insight, the series explores modern rituals, intelligent formulation and a more considered approach to self-care. Don’t miss out!

50

www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA – Ali Bin Ali is well known for its diverse portfolio across

multiple industries. In 2026, the group is introducing Ali Bin Ali Beauty. Can you tell us about the vision behind this division and how it reshapes the beauty landscape in the GCC? Brooke Bergé – Ali Bin Ali Beauty was conceived as a response to a clear shift in how beauty is understood today, more conscious, more informed and future-forward. Our vision is to curate a portfolio spanning skincare, body care, hair care, men’s grooming, oral care, supplements, feminine hygiene and baby care, approached through a truly holistic lens. Each category has been carefully selected, reflecting our belief that beauty and well-being are inseparable. We champion brands that unite performance with integrity, where scientific excellence, safety and responsibility coexist. Through education, ingredient transparency and curated storytelling, Ali Bin Ali Beauty seeks to elevate everyday rituals into something purposeful, enduring and quietly luxurious. Our ambition is to redefine what clean luxury means in the GCC, not as a trend, but as a new benchmark.

OHLALA – Clean beauty has evolved significantly over the past few

years. How does Ali Bin Ali Beauty approach brand curation today? Brooke – For us, clean beauty goes beyond ingredient exclusions. It is a philosophy grounded in transparency, scientific discipline and accountability. Every brand we introduce is evaluated through a rigorous internal framework that examines ingredient integrity, formulation philosophy, clinical validation, sustainability practices and long-term vision. Ethical sourcing, conscious packaging and genuine environmental and social responsibility are nonnegotiable. We are drawn to independent innovators, boutique maisons and cult brands that deliver uncompromising performance with intention. This

disciplined approach positions Ali Bin Ali Beauty as a trusted gateway to next-generation luxury, where refinement and responsibility coexist.

functions as a final protective phase, creating a breathable seal that preserves hydration and shields the skin throughout the day.

OHLALA – As the Division Manager for Ali Bin Ali Beauty, can you tell

OHLALA – What would be the ideal beauty routine for this time of the year?

us more about your professional background and the experience you bring to the company? Brooke – I have extensive international experience across luxury beauty, wellness and professional spa channels. My background spans global retail strategy, education and high-performance skincare development. My expertise will allow the division to shape a strong, credible narrative built on expertise, modern beauty science and consumer clarity. Our approach blends luxury know-how with a deep understanding of formulation integrity and long-term skin health.

OHLALA – Which brands will you be introducing to the GCC and why

were they chosen? Brooke – Our inaugural portfolio introduces a considered selection of international brands that exemplify clean innovation and elevated results. These include Ayuna from Spain, Cinq Mondes from France, Vitaman from Australia and Le Rouge Français, renowned for its pioneering use of botanical pigments. Each was selected for its scientific integrity, sensorial intelligence and commitment to sustainability. Together, they form a portfolio that feels refined, responsible and inherently forward-thinking.

OHLALA – With winter causing dehydration and dullness, how important

is hydration for skin health, and what solutions do you recommend? Brooke – Hydration is a cornerstone of optimal skin function. Beyond aesthetics, it is fundamental to maintaining barrier integrity, cellular communication and overall cutaneous resilience. During winter, reduced humidity and cold air compromise the stratum corneum, increasing transepidermal water loss and leaving the skin physiologically vulnerable. The answer lies not in superficial moisturisation, but in strategic barrier restoration. We recommend prioritising hydrating treatments, lipidreplenishing creams and formulations that support the skin’s microbiome and natural repair mechanisms. Ayuna offers exemplary winter solutions: Cream II delivers biomimetic nourishment that restores comfort and elasticity, Essence rehydrates and reactivates cellular vitality, while Nectar

Brooke – An effective winter routine is rooted in physiological respect for the skin. It should prioritise hydration, protection and controlled renewal, rather than aggressive intervention. A gentle cleanser preserves barrier lipids, followed by a hydrating treatment such as Ayuna Essence to restore water balance and cellular efficiency. A replenishing cream such as Cream II or Cream III [J] reinforces the lipid matrix and supports barrier recovery, while a finishing application of Nectar completes the ritual by sealing hydration and protecting the skin from environmental stress. Together, these steps maintain equilibrium, calm inflammation and sustain a refined, luminous complexion throughout the season.

OHLALA – This season is also a perfect moment to work on recovery. How can the skin be reset after prolonged exposure to heat and humidity? Which Ayuna products do you recommend and where can they be found? Brooke – Winter offers an ideal biological window for skin recovery. With reduced thermal stress and UV exposure, the skin is better positioned to recalibrate and repair. The focus should shift toward soothing inflammation, restoring lipid balance and supporting intrinsic regeneration. Ayuna Balm is particularly effective for skin that feels reactive, depleted or sensitised, delivering immediate comfort while reinforcing barrier resilience. For more profound replenishment, Cream II provides a rich, restorative treatment that visibly improves suppleness, luminosity and skin comfort. Ayuna will be available in professional spa environments and select premium retail destinations across the GCC.

OHLALA – Each skin type has different requirements, but can you share universal tips to help lock in moisture during winter? Brooke – Moisture lasts longer when products are applied on slightly damp skin and layered with intention. Hydrating treatments such as Ayuna Essence create the first layer of moisture. Rich creams like Cream II maintain hydration throughout the day. Nectar used as the final step creates a soft, breathable seal that protects the skin and keeps hydration locked in. Small habits like avoiding over-cleansing and using a humidifier at home also help the skin remain balanced in colder weather.

kincare is no longer confined to bottles, jars and tubes. It’s slipping into our wardrobes, quite literally. As fashion grows smarter and beauty grows in demand, a new category has emerged: cosmetotextiles, fabrics infused with ingredients traditionally used in cosmetics. Think aloe vera-soaked loungewear, probiotic tops and even antioxidant-releasing clothing. While it may sound like something born out of a futuristic lab, this blend of textiles and topical ingredients is gaining real-world traction. And it’s easy to see why: we’re already wearing clothes every day, so why not make the most of them? In a region where sun exposure and hydration are everyday concerns, clothing that offers an added layer of care feels like the best next step. Here are five brands leading the charge, each with its own inventive take on skincare you can wear.

COOLIBAR

COOLIBAR

COOLIBAR While many brands are only now dipping into wellness-infused fabrics, Coolibar has long specialised in one of the most important forms of wearable skincare: sun protection. Rather than adding ingredients, the brand prioritises fabric engineering. Its textiles are tested to deliver UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 50+, meaning they block at least 98% of UVA and UVB rays, the same rays responsible for premature ageing, pigmentation and long-term skin damage. Use of fabrics like ZnO and Aqua Classic, which incorporate UV-blocking particles directly into the fibres, makes the protection long-lasting and wash-resistant. Unlike regular clothing, whose sun protection varies by weave and colour, the pieces offer tested, certified coverage. For those living in warm climates, this is arguably one of the most practical forms of wearable skincare. It lets you reduce sun exposure just by getting dressed, something sunscreen alone can’t always guarantee.

COPERNI

BEAUTY COLUMN

COPERNI Parisian label Coperni, founded by Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, has always embraced innovation, from spraying dresses onto models to blending couture with tech. Its latest experiment, the C+ Carewear line, ventures into the territory of cosmetotextiles, using fabrics infused with a patented symbiotic blend of probiotics and prebiotics developed by Swiss textile specialists HeiQ. The fabric is bio-based, stretchy and biodegradable, designed to sit close to the skin. With movement and body heat, the garments gradually release beneficial bacteria intended to support the skin’s microbiome, which plays a key role in barrier function, hydration and overall balance. The collection includes bodysuits, leggings and longsleeved tops, all cut in Coperni’s signature sporty-minimal aesthetic.

GRAFFENBERG

GRAFFENBERG

GRÄFFENBERG Gräffenberg pushes the boundaries of cosmetotextiles with its G-Cotton fabric – a blend of cotton and hemp infused with copper oxide particles and microencapsulated Coenzyme Q10. Copper oxide is known for its antimicrobial and deodorising properties, while CoQ10 is a trusted antioxidant used widely in skincare for its ability to support the skin’s natural repair processes. These garments release CoQ10 gradually onto the skin, while the copper element offers added hygienic freshness. Gräffenberg positions its pieces as functional, long-lasting essentials designed with wellness in mind, and the brand also emphasises sustainability through organic cotton, hemp fibres and recycled packaging.

PH5

LC

BEAUTY COLUMN

LC Founded in Dubai in 2019 by entrepreneur Lyndsay Doran, LC was created with a simple idea that everyday essentials should feel as luxurious and comforting as loungewear, without compromising style. With LC’s Aloe Collection, everyday basics get a gentle, skin-loving twist. The brand uses a modal jersey that’s finished with an aloe vera treatment, creating pieces that feel soft, cool and soothing on contact. Aloe is, of course, a classic comfort ingredient known for its calming and moisturising properties. The focus here is on comfort, not miracle skincare results. The brand’s aloe-treated tops and loungewear pieces offer a subtle enhancement in wear, ideal for travel, long workdays or simply relaxing at home. The soft and breathable material makes the wearer both look and feel good. PH5 Founded by Wei Lin with Australian designer Zoe Champion leading the creative direction, PH5 has always blurred the lines between engineering and knitwear design. The label introduced hyaluronic acidinfused sleepwear through its PJ5 line. It uses the brand’s HydraKNIT technology, where EcoVero viscose yarn is embedded with microcapsules of hyaluronic acid (HA). The idea is both surprisingly logical and slightly luxurious: as you move during sleep, the friction helps release microdoses of the ingredient, forming a light, moisture-retaining layer on your skin. HA is famous for its water-binding properties, so incorporating it into sleepwear is a clever twist, especially for those who wake up feeling a little parched. It’s beauty sleep made literal, with moisture support being delivered quietly throughout the night, without the extra step of applying yet another product, very much in line with the modern push for passive, effortless self-care.

A HOLISTIC

RESTORATION From sound healing to meridian massage, Bushra Hakim experienced the Sonic Serenity package at The Ritz-Carlton Spa.

ew hotel names are as synonymous with timeless luxury as The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. There’s a certain expectation that comes with walking through its doors: opulence without excess, service that’s intuitive rather than intrusive and experiences that feel thoughtfully curated rather than formulaic. It’s this same philosophy that extends seamlessly into The Ritz-Carlton Spa. The spa has its own dedicated entrance, opening into a light-filled reception that feels instantly calming. Marbled floors gleam under soft lighting, while plush fuchsia sofas add a subtle pop of colour against the otherwise neutral and elegant palette. I was welcomed by the attentive team and introduced to the spa’s new Director, Siti, who took the time to walk me through the extensive offerings before explaining the treatment I would be experiencing that day: Sonic Serenity, an immersive ritual inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The treatment is designed to restore balance – physically, emotionally and energetically. It combines sound healing with a 90-minute full-body meridian massage using soft, non-setting pink clay, followed by an hour-long facial. All products used are from Ashmira Botanica, a vegan luxury skincare brand rooted in the principles of Chinese medicine and focussed on restoring harmony from the inside out. To get started, Houda at reception gave me a warm towel infused with eucalyptus and peppermint oils, perfect for the chilly weather outside. This was followed by a cup of puerh tea, a fermented Chinese tea traditionally known to support digestion and detoxification. Houda explained that TCM views wellness as fluid and ever-changing rather than one-size-fits-all and introduced me to the five elements central to Traditional Chinese Medicine: wood, fire, Earth, metal and water. Each element is associated with different organs, emotions and physical tendencies. Based on my birth chart, my dominant element is water, and this would influence everything from the oils used to the final facial mask, ensuring the treatment was fully tailored.

S PA S P O T L I G H T

My therapist for the day, Jero, greeted me before giving me a tour of the women’s facilities. She recommended using the spa amenities before the treatment rather than after, to allow the body to fully absorb the benefits. Once inside, I was struck by just how expansive and luxe the space was. The locker rooms were impeccably stocked with every amenity one could need and after slipping into my robe, I made my way through the facilities. The steam room and sauna were first, as they are ideal for opening up the pores and preparing the skin. I also tried the thalassotherapy pool, which uses mineral-rich seawater to support circulation, muscle relaxation and skin health. By the time Jero came to escort me to the treatment room, I already felt mentally lighter and physically relaxed. The treatment took place in the VIP Suite, a secluded space entirely clad in wood. It felt less like a spa room and more like a private tropical cabin, instantly cocooning me in calm. I lay face down as the therapy began, starting with sound healing to ease both mental and emotional tension. Jero used a Kenari chime (an instrument made from tree-pod seeds) to produce gentle, water-like sounds that felt grounding. My hands and feet were cleansed with warm towels before acupressure points were stimulated to encourage energy flow. Ashmira Botanica’s Brighten and Remineralise Pink Yin Clay was then applied across my back and legs. With sensitive, dry skin, I initially worried the clay might be drying, but it behaved more like a nourishing cream than a traditional mask. Formulated with French pink clay and essential oils, it felt deeply comforting rather than tightening. To keep the body warm, the clay was covered with a cloth before warm singing bowls were placed along my back. As Jero played them, the vibrations travelled through my body in the most soothing way. She moved the bowls methodically, the sound waves creating a deeply immersive experience that quietened my mind almost instantly. The massage that followed focussed on relaxation rather than intensity, something TCM strongly advocates. Using more of the pink clay, Jero worked through my tension points with slow, intentional strokes. When I turned onto my back, special attention was given to the stomach area, an often-neglected zone in Western massage but one that plays a central role in Chinese medicine. The sensation was unexpectedly comforting, as though the treatment was working from the inside out.

62

S PA S P O T L I G H T

Once the lights gently came back on, the facial portion began. Jero started with acupressure across my face and décolletage, then cleansed with the Clean and Revive Rose Cleansing Oil and a double cleanse with the Clean and Refresh Creamy Clay Cleanser. A gentle exfoliation came next using the Rice Face Polish mixed with Aloe Glow. What followed were two distinct facial massages. The first used Rice Balm blended with Yin and Yang serums to address balance and hydration, while the second focussed on meridian pathways using the Yang Face Massage Oil to energise the skin. Lymphatic drainage was then performed using silicone facial cups and aloe vera gel, helping reduce puffiness and encourage detoxification. The facial concluded with a trio of masks. A cooling Yin mask and a warm Yang mask worked in contrast before the final, element-specific treatment. For my water element, a mask made from Terre de Sarval clay was applied. It is a mineral-rich black clay high in iron, known for absorbing impurities and supporting cellular regeneration along with infusions of essential oils such as juniper, peppermint and May Chang, traditionally used to support clarity and emotional grounding. The Soothe and Rebalance Organic Bulgarian Rose Spray was misted throughout the facial to tone and hydrate, while the Restore and Illuminate Rice Renewal Cream sealed everything in, leaving my skin luminous and protected. A cold rose quartz roller soothed the skin, but it was the final sound of a quartz singing bowl paired with a delicate windchime that truly completed the experience. I emerged feeling profoundly aligned, as though both body and mind had been gently recalibrated. In the relaxation lounge, Jero brought me Bai Mudan tea, made from white peony flowers. Light and floral, it was chosen specifically to support the water element by calming and hydrating. Time seemed to slip away unnoticed, but what stayed with me most wasn’t just how my skin looked or how relaxed my muscles felt; instead, the sense that I’d been cared for in a way that extended beyond the physical.

Classic Aesthetics with a

TWIST Peserico presents an autumn and winter collection with everlasting designs – clothes that carry memories.

Peserico is a brand that combines the best of the Veneto tailoring tradition with an innovative approach. The essence of Italian style is evident in its Made in Italy production, which creates garments with timeless appeal. Handmade manufacturing and the highest quality result in a versatile wardrobe for every woman. Its autumn and winter collection is not just garments but memories in fabric form, traces of identities and experiences that accompany us and, at the same time, define us. Like photographs, what we wear reflects us and lets pieces of our unique personalities show, revealing fragments of our essence. The colour palette carries the sense of a memory: clay green and ivory yellow blend with opal white and amber beige, while rust and ebony brown evoke the warmth of a lasting remembrance. Stone grey and dark sapphire contrast with the intensity of agate lilac, a feminine hue reimagined as ephemeral. Coats take centre stage, reinterpreting the classic tailored and cut, enriched with brushed alpaca and jacquard fabrics that evoke a restless camouflage elegance. The interplay of sequins and shaded tones enhances the sense of movement, while blurred checks, macro-check overshirts and padded outerwear in silky nylon find balance in flannel and shearling details, creating a dynamic tension between comfort and elegance. The chosen textures and patterns for trousers are tweed and Prince of Wales enhanced with lurex details, while the Nordic-inspired jacquard knitwear shines with the subtle presence of micro-sequins. The soft lines of structured viscose and fil coupé voile gently shape the silhouette with an ethereal lightness. The collection is complemented by a more informal subcollection, where corduroys and treated cottons alternate with monogram knitwear and sweatshirts, creating new, contemporary volumes that are balanced by the laid-back nonchalance of matelassé. More than focussing on style, Peserico’s autumn and winter collection invites you to dress your memory and the future, like a photograph that never stops telling who we are, who we were and, if possible, who we will become. @peserico_official

OHLALA SPOTLIGHT

The

FUTURE

Female is

The world of scientific disciplines is not led only by men. The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Middle East Regional Young Talents Program showcases the women behind cutting-edge projects in the region, and OHLALA had the pleasure of interviewing some of them.

I

t’s not every day you see programmes that support women in the region, especially ones that have a significant impact. Now in its 12th year, the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Middle East Regional Young Talents Program, in partnership with Khalifa University of Science and Technology (in Abu Dhabi), does that consistently. The initiative recognises the groundbreaking work of Arab women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), whose discoveries address urgent challenges and inspire future generations. The programme has a global reach. Since its launch in 1998, L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science has celebrated more than 4,700 researchers from over 140 countries and associated territories, with 63 from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), awarding a total of USD1.035 million in endowments to advance their research. The 2025 edition honoured six remarkable Arab female researchers driving innovation in STEM. Despite the global barriers women in science continue to face, these scientists have achieved breakthroughs that are vital to the region’s future. They not only promote scientific progress but also serve as inspiring examples of perseverance and passion. OHLALA had the opportunity to interview them to bring awareness to their work and support this unique initiative.

OHLALA SPOTLIGHT

OHLALA – How do you see the scientific field in the region? In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges scientists in the Middle East face? Dr Ayat Hammad – The scientific field in the Middle East is advancing at an impressive pace, particularly in the Gulf region. In recent years, we’ve seen the establishment of new universities offering advanced graduate programmes and a growing enthusiasm among young researchers to pursue scientific careers. Investment in research funding is increasing, and regional and international collaborations are strengthening, raising both the quality and global visibility of scientific output. However, some challenges persist, such as difficulty in securing an international research grant. In addition, implementing clinical research and trials remains challenging in parts of the region, as patient participation and public awareness of their value are still developing. Overcoming these barriers through stronger regional networks and public engagement will be key to sustaining this momentum. Dr Fatimah Abdulhakim – The scientific field in the Middle East is growing rapidly, driven by national strategies that prioritise research, innovation and talent development. We are seeing major investments in research centres, biotech, space exploration, agriculture, sustainability and environmental sciences. The region is shifting from being primarily a consumer of technology to becoming a producer of knowledge and solutions adapted to our unique environments. One of the key challenges is translating research outcomes into real-world applications. We have strong talent and research outputs, but we need stronger bridges between academia, industry and policy. Ohood Al-Ghadani – I see that the scientific field in the Middle East is showing continuous growth and remarkable development, with women playing an increasingly important role that reflects their active contribution to this sector. According to UNESCO statistics, female STEM graduates in the Arab States represent a higher proportion than the global average, exceeding many other regions and highlighting a positive trend in science in the region. However, in my opinion, the field still faces challenges, including limited research funding in some countries and difficulties accessing advanced equipment and the resources needed to conduct high-quality scientific research.

OHLALA – How important are programmes like L’Oréal-

UNESCO For Women in Science? What are the tangible benefits the region receives from initiatives like this? Aysha Ali Samra AlShehhi – Such programmes are incredibly important because they highlight and celebrate women scientists, offering them visibility, recognition and support to advance their work. They also inspire the next generation of girls to believe that a career in science is possible and impactful. On a regional level, initiatives like L’Oréal-UNESCO strengthen the research ecosystem by fostering collaboration, encouraging excellence and demonstrating that empowering women in science directly contributes to national development and innovation.

Dr Nadine Hosny El Said – Egyptian researcher based in the UAE: Harnessing Epigenetic Science to Revolutionize Patient Care

74

www.ohlala-magazine.com

Dr Fatemah Jawad Bahman – This prestigious initiative gives strong recognition to women scientists and their contributions. Being part of this programme has allowed me to be recognised both nationally and internationally, helping open doors to new collaborations and joint projects with researchers from around the world. It also plays an essential role in highlighting the value of women in science and proving that women can lead high-impact research and innovation. Programmes like this not only celebrate achievements but also create real opportunities that benefit both science and society, inspiring younger generations to believe that they, too, can build successful scientific careers. Dr Nadine Hosny El Said – These programmes are not just awards, they’re catalysts for transformation. For me, being recognised in the Middle East edition was both humbling and empowering. It gave visibility not only to my work on lncRNAs in metabolic diseases but also to the idea that cutting-edge science is happening here, in our region. The tangible benefits go far beyond individual success stories. These initiatives build a network of women researchers who uplift one another, inspire universities to create more inclusive environments and show young girls that science is not a distant dream, it’s a real and attainable path. They normalise seeing women as leaders in science, as principal investigators, innovators and decision-makers. They also highlight the importance of funding, inclusion and policy change to support women’s participation. In short, they shift the narrative from ‘women trying to find a place in the science field’ to ‘women shaping the future of science.’

OHLALA SPOTLIGHT

OHLALA – What is one key piece of advice you would give to young women aspiring to pursue a career in STEM? Dr Ayat Hammad – A career in STEM can be demanding, but with resilience, commitment and clarity of purpose, every challenge can be overcome. My advice to young women is to believe deeply in their abilities and never allow self-doubt to limit their ambitions. Keep your spirit high and your goals in sight; each effort you make brings you closer to something meaningful. One day, you will look back and feel proud that you stayed true to your passion and perseverance. Aysha Ali Samra AlShehhi – Believe in your curiosity, it’s your strongest guide. Don’t let doubt or fear stop you from exploring, experimenting and creating. STEM is not just about equations or machines; it’s about solving real problems and shaping the future. Stay persistent, keep learning and remember that every great scientist started with a simple question and the courage to chase the answer. Dr Fatemah Jawad Bahman – Believe in the impact of your curiosity. Science is not just about answers; it’s about asking bold questions and staying persistent in the face of challenges. Surround yourself with mentors, seek collaboration and never underestimate the power of your perspective. Your voice, your ideas and your determination can shape the future of science in ways that truly matter.

Dr Fatemah Jawad Bahman – Kuwaiti scientist at the Dasman Diabetes Institute: Uncovering the Genetic Links Between Diet, Inflammation and Metabolic Disease

Dr Fatimah Abdulhakim – My advice is: believe that you belong in the scientific space. Pursue your curiosity with confidence, seek mentors who support your growth and don’t hesitate to take up opportunities that challenge you. Science needs diverse perspectives and your voice and ideas are valuable. Dr Nadine Hosny El Said – Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity, build it. Science is full of uncertainty, and the path will never be linear. I’ve faced many rejections in my career. Doors open at the right time. So, stay resilient and never give up. Science thrives on diverse perspectives. Aim high, and dream big. Through passion, persistence and staying humble, you can achieve wonders in your field, further than you could imagine. Regardless of personal circumstances, nothing is ‘Impossible’; the word itself says ‘I’m possible’. Ohood Al-Ghadani – I would say to all young women: believe in your potential and view every obstacle as a bridge leading you closer to success. Your voice and your ideas matter, and the world needs science as much as science needs you. Remember, your contribution can truly make a difference.

10 Tips to Help You Exercise - Change your mindset. Think of exercising as something you get to do, you are healthy enough, you can make time for it, rather than something you should do, that is part of a to-do list as an obligation. Look at it as a small luxury in your everyday life. - Create habits that stick. Start with something small, such as walking 15 minutes a day. Don't aim for something big at the beginning that you know you won't be able to repeat easily. Also, make it convenient. - Enter challenges. Choose a friend, family member or partner to join you in an exercise challenge. You can start with daily steps or go for fullon programmes to see who will win. You can even establish a prize or a prank at the end of it. - Find a purpose to move. Maybe you lost weight and want to keep your new slim shape, or you want to improve your mental health (studies show that exercise is closely related to a sense of well-being). No matter what, find a reason and stick to it. - Find your tribe. Sometimes all you need to do to move more is find a group of people you like to hang out with and organise team sports. Padel and tennis have apparently become quite popular, with many places offering spaces that can be rented for your gang. - Hire a personal trainer. Having someone on your side, giving you instructions on what to do next and tracking your performance is the best way to get bitten by the 'exercise bug'. Someone who is motivating and a little harsh from time to time can help. - Introduce habit stacking in your daily life. Habit stacking is taking something you already do and pairing it with a new habit. You brush your teeth every day. Why not add squats into the equation? You can do 10 of them while brushing, or right after. Soon enough, it will become an automatic habit. - Put it on your calendar. Just like you do with appointments, meeting friends and date nights, create a schedule that blocks that specific time for exercise. It doesn't have to be many days a week, even one is better than nothing. - Try something completely different. Are you tired of the same type of exercises being offered out there? What about joining an adult ballet class? Or even go for gymnastics? Sometimes you just have to find what makes you happy to keep you moving. - Wear a smartwatch or fitness tracker. It might sound like a trend, but wearing one of these can motivate you to move more. You will be competing with yourself (and others, depending on the device) to track the number of steps or amount of exercise in a month.

The second provides long-lasting results for up to six weeks, with benefits including smoother skin texture and improved hydration. Both are great, though. - Salt Therapy. Salt caves and rooms improve breathing, skin health and sleep. Active spaces have machines breaking salt into particles, allowing you to breathe them in, while passive spaces are designed for relaxation without inhaling them. For the skin, dry salt can absorb impurities, regulate pH levels and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria.

- Sleep Spa Journeys. We all know how sleep plays a big part in overall well-being. However, many factors work against a good night's sleep. With that problem in hand, many places are offering a series of treatments to help with sleepless nights, combining holistic practices such as aromatherapy massages, Reiki and sleep coaching. - Social Wellness Experiences. The offers now go beyond couples' treatments, you can experience sound bath gatherings and wellness retreats that blend fitness, healing and friendship – together is better. - Technology-assisted Therapies. VR Meditation transports you to virtual calming environments that help reduce stress and improve mindfulness in minutes. AI Wellness Assistants are chatbots and voice tools that provide recommendations and wellness tips and some medical centres also offer 3D body scans to customise treatments. - Turkish Hammam. Despite sharing the same concept as Moroccan Bath, it doesn't focus as much on detoxification or scrubbing. It still has it in its steps, but the Turkish bath is more about cleansing, water rituals and relaxation. - Zero Gravity Massage. This type of treatment takes place in special chairs or pods that lift your legs above your heart, distributing your weight evenly and creating a floating-on-air sensation. The mechanisms in the chair replicate the touch and techniques of a masseuse and are said to boost circulation, improve oxygenation and enhance nutrient distribution. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Winter is best enjoyed in a city that knows how to celebrate it. OHLALA stayed at Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna Hotel and explored the best that the Austrian capital has to offer during this time of the year.

rom the moment we arrived, Vienna revealed its charm with an effortless grace – refined, historic and inviting in a way only great cities can be. That early glimpse of Vienna’s character soon emerged as the rhythm of our entire stay. The city greeted us with an elegance that felt both welcoming and wonderfully grand – wide boulevards, crisp winter air and a sense of history that made every corner feel like the prelude to an opera. Our invitation to experience the newly reimagined Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna Hotel had set expectations high. After all, it is not every day that one checks into a former World’s Fair masterpiece on the iconic Ringstrasse (a circular grand boulevard that serves as a ring road around Vienna’s historic city centre). Crafted initially by Theophil Hansen in the 19th century and reimagined in 2025, this landmark promised grand architecture, cultural artistry and indulgence in equal measure. We were ready for all of it – ideally with an Einspänner, the city’s signature coffee, in hand. A WELCOME ETCHED IN ELEGANCE The hotel’s façade rose before us like a perfectly framed painting – stately, symmetrical and unmistakably Viennese. Inside, the welcome ritual immediately set the tone. The team had a way of making the formal feel familiar; check-in was swift, gracious and filled with those small touches that remind you why five-star hospitality is an art form. Our suite was a blend of modern refinement and historic personality, the kind of space that encouraged both exploration and the irresistible urge to sink into the nearest armchair. Across the hotel, Anantara’s inhouse design team refurbished 62 guest rooms and 90 suites, the most in any city hotel, blending historic appeal with contemporary polish in a range of configurations. Many feature balconies, 3.5-metre ceilings and oversized windows, while triple-glazing keeps the Ringstrasse bustle out. No sooner had we unpacked than dusk settled over the city, signalling our first appointment: an aperitif at Theo’s Lounge & Bar.

Theo’s had already gained a reputation for marrying innovation with Viennese café culture. The mixologists worked with local fortified juices, seasonal produce and even ‘ugly’ herbs – a sustainable philosophy we applauded while pretending we always knew which fermented fruit skins contributed to a cocktail’s profile. As the ring boulevard lights appeared outside, the bar shifted from chic café to evening destination and we happily shifted with it. A guided tour of the property revealed the scale of the transformation. Neo-Renaissance bones, modern luxury and curated design touches came together seamlessly. But the showstopper awaited upstairs: Vienna’s largest Presidential Suite – an impressive 408sq/m that can offer up to four bedrooms – where Executive Chef Dieter Stamminger hosted a private dinner. Courses blended Austrian and Viennese classics with international finesse, each beautifully paired and served against a backdrop of city views and refined grandeur. A CITY WORTH WANDERING Though the hotel was the star of our journey, Vienna demanded – and deserved – its own space on our itinerary. Breakfast at Brasserie Sophie energised our morning, followed by a Signature Experience tracing the footsteps of Theophil Hansen himself. From Parliament to the Academy of Fine Arts, Hansen’s architectural legacy appeared everywhere once we knew where to look. A stop at A.E. Köchert, jeweller to the Imperial Court, added a sparkle to our day. It was the kind of place where history and craftsmanship sit so closely together that you half expect a member of the royal family to step into the queue. Lunch at Schwarzes Kameel, dating back to 1618, offered a delicious introduction to Vienna’s culinary heritage before we set out to explore the city’s festive side. Over the course of the afternoon and evening, we wandered through three Christmas markets, including Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt, Vienna’s largest, each offering its own atmosphere – from grand, illuminated squares to more intimate courtyards filled with the scent of spice, roasted nuts and mulled grape. www.ohlala-magazine.com

87

T R AV E L E S C A P E S

A definite highlight was witnessing the now iconic scene in Rathausplatz in which a big red heart is released from a tower and floats across the winter sky by cable, with its own musical accompaniment, to light up a tree decorated with glowing, illuminated hearts. The giant Christmas tree in the square and nearby ice rink are fabulous, but it was the heart display that truly stole the show, a magical experience that we won’t soon forget. Against a backdrop of winter and festive lights, it became clear that Vienna wears the season exceptionally well. The following morning brought another highlight: the Spanish Riding School. Watching Lipizzaner stallions train with such precision and calm felt like witnessing a centuries-old dance – graceful, disciplined and entirely enchanting. THE HEART OF OUR STAY As much as Vienna captivated us, the Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna Hotel continually drew us back with its effortless charm. Breakfasts were an indulgent ritual. The Signature Buffet showcased Austrian specialities alongside mezze and the à la carte dishes from Chef Dieter ensured mornings began with flavour and finesse. Sparkling grape or a classic Viennese coffee? We tried both – for research purposes, of course. Dinner on our second evening elevated our appreciation even further. EDVARD, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant led by Head Chef Paul Gamauf, delivered a tasting journey rooted in sustainability and creativity. By day, it felt bright and welcoming; by night, intimate – sober wood finishes and aged mirrors offset by playful floral wallpaper and rich velvet. The seasonal tasting followed the natural cycle of the year, spotlighting local and regional ingredients that were cooked, pickled, preserved and even processed into lowwaste beverages. Pairings selected by Head Sommelier Klaus Lechner – from unusual grapes to thoughtfully crafted juices – made each course memorable. It was an unmistakably modern expression of Viennese gastronomy. Throughout our stay, service remained impeccable. From the warm guidance offered by the team to the seamless organisation of experiences, everything reflected a commitment to hospitality that was both heartfelt and sophisticated. 88

AS WE TOOK OUR LEAVE As our time in Vienna drew to a close, we realised something important: the grandeur of a city is best experienced through the places that welcome you. The Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna Hotel did more than host us – it connected us to the city’s history, culture and character with elegance and generosity. We left with suitcases slightly heavier, hearts noticeably lighter and the comforting thought that some destinations stay with you long after you’ve flown home. If ever there was a hotel that resonates with those who appreciate heritage, luxury and a touch of warmth, this palatial refuge on the Ringstrasse is undoubtedly it. THANKS TO OUR HOSTS We extend our warmest thanks to the entire Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna team, whose gracious hospitality made every moment of our stay memorable. Their care, sincerity and effortless professionalism made Vienna feel not just welcoming – but wonderfully personal.

CHIC EATS

A WARRIOR, DRAGONS AND A TASTY

MENU

The best dining experiences happen when great food meets stunning atmosphere with a story to tell. Fernanda Langhammer headed to Mei Ling to find out more about its secrets. 90

s a journalist, I love storytelling and I believe that everything that comes with a good story has a deeper value. Mei Ling fits into that category; the dining destination is not only a restaurant but a concept, born to entice its patrons as they dine on delectable food. The story behind the eatery is that Mei Ling, a female Chinese royal warrior with a special connection to dragons (hence the restaurant’s logo), creates a secret society to protect and maintain the world’s balance. The existence of this society is known only through whispers travelling with the wind. Mei Ling, the eatery, carries this perception of mystery and allure and feels extremely exclusive – a dining destination for those who are worthy of being there. The place feels like a hidden spot, and I almost felt I should have been given a password to enter. There is a private car park, a big plus in Adliya, and from the parking area, a path led me to an imposing logo on the wall and an almost-hidden red door opened as if it sensed my presence. Inside, a copper singing bowl resounded, and a voice welcomed me to Mei Ling. At that exact moment, I knew this was going to be an enthralling experience. The décor is impressive. The lighting is minimal to maintain the sense of secrecy, with floating lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Dark wood, grey tones and red accents in carved walls and passages complement the enigmatic vibe. The space is massive, with various dining rooms, including the Emerald Oasis and the Bamboo Garden (a beautiful terrace to enjoy on good weather days). We dined in the private room upstairs, and the handrail beside the stairs was covered in greenish leather imitating a dragon’s scales – every detail seemed to belong there seemingly.

CHIC EATS

The cuisine is modern Chinese (with Cantonese and Szechuan recipes), interpreted with authentic techniques and a twist: contemporary ingredients and presentation. For my dining journey, the team (special thanks to Omar and Saran) handpicked the dishes – signature and must-try items. The dinner started with the Crispy Aromatic Duck Salad and Dao Sliced Salmon. The salad came with a mountain of fresh green leaves hiding the crunchy duck pieces. The contrasts of textures and the tanginess of the lemongrass vinaigrette dressing and pomelo segments made this a complete dish, fulfilling and full of flavour. The raw-sliced salmon came bathed in Szechuan truffle sauce, topped with shredded green papaya and sesame seeds – for me, one of the star dishes of the night. The salmon was super thin and soft, which contrasted beautifully with the crunchy papaya. The dressing had an umami-rich blend, with a unique spicy-numbing sensation from the Szechuan peppercorns, complemented by the musky aroma of truffle, a savoury soy base and sweet notes, creating a complex profile that excited my taste buds. Absolutely delicious. I didn’t let them take the plate away until I was sure every last little piece had been eaten. Next, a variety of appetisers and dim sum. The Crystal Prawn Har Gao was my favourite. These dumplings are usually filled with minced shrimp, but at Mei Ling, they come in big pieces, which seems like a small detail but makes them much better than usual – wrapped in a delicate, slightly chewy, translucent dough offering a delightful contrast in textures for an exciting bite. The Xiao Long Bao is a fun dish; its bright green dough encases small pieces of chicken thigh in a warm coriander and Szechuan chilli stock, served with ginger vinegar sauce. Ginger is great to balance the richness of chicken fat. The dumplings come sitting in a special spoon to catch the liquid that pours from the parcels – warm, comfy and perfect for cold nights. The Jasmine Smoked Wagyu were roasted boneless Wagyu ribs glazed in Chinese honey, sitting on top of fried lotus and thin slices of kumquat for a touch of citrus. The meat, as expected, melted in the mouth and delivered the perfect balance between sweet and savoury. We also tried the Truffle Puff, Angus tenderloin with mixed mushrooms encased in buttery Chinese puff pastry, which is flakier than its Western counterpart. It was like opening a little present; yummy and hearty.

The Cantonese Roasted Peking Duck was a show apart. The oven-roasted Chinese-spice-marinated duck came in a special chest, and as soon as the host opened it, smoke filled the room, giving us a hint of the flavour we were about to try. One of the chefs was waiting by our table, ready to slice it skillfully. The meat was tender and soft, and, as one of my dining companions pointed out, because each slice came from different parts of the duck, they had different textures – the ones with fatty skin were juicy and delicious. Served with homemade pancakes, thinly sliced cucumber, red chilli, leeks and Hoisin sauce. From the main course section, the Bashu Style Sea Bass blew our minds. Deep-fried fish served with eggplant, tofu, lotus root and chilli broth. Everything was delicious on its own, but a mouthful with a small piece of each ingredient elevated the experience into a delightful surprise. The Sous Vide Angus Short Ribs were perfectly braised, accompanied by mustard leaves and barbecue sauce. The Ha-Haa Prawn was fried prawns coated in a crispy batter and a flavourful sticky chilli sauce – apparently, it was named Ha-Haa because it makes you laugh; at least we all did after our host’s joke, so I guess it suits. To end this magnificent spread, a tray of desserts arrived at our table. We sampled the blueberry cheesecake, crème brûlée, chocolate fondant, apple crumble and fresh fruits such as dragon fruit and mango. They were all very light and not too sweet, but the crème brûlée and chocolate fondant were memorable and the ones we would go back to any day. The dining journey had many wow moments, from theatrical presentations with dry ice and dishes that I am coming back for, to impeccable ambience and good music playing in the background. Mei Ling is the place to be: I unveiled its secrets and became part of this unique society where food does the honours.

ITALIAN DESIGN TO CALL YOURS

OHLALA EMBARKED ON A TRIP TO PORTUGAL TO MEET A STRIKING CREATION THAT COMBINES ELEGANCE AND PERFORMANCE: THE FERRARI AMALFI.

ollowing a very welcome invitation from Ferrari Middle East and Euro Motors Bahrain, we arrived in Lisbon from the Gulf and were swiftly transferred south to the Pine Cliffs Resort in Albufeira – a setting that felt entirely appropriate for the unveiling of Ferrari’s latest Grand Tourer. After a welcoming drink overlooking the Atlantic, OHLALA’s team spent the evening listening intently to Ferrari designers and engineers, gaining insight into the thinking behind the new Amalfi before watching footage that introduced the car in detail. It was a refined, unhurried start – one that allowed the philosophy behind the model to unfold naturally. The following morning, we regrouped early and headed out on a test-drive route designed specifically for the Amalfi. The course traced the coastline around Albufeira before climbing into the surrounding mountains, combining flowing roads, elevation changes and wide-open views. As Ferrari’s new front-mid-engine V8 2+ coupé – and the model created to replace the Roma – the Amalfi arrives with a clear mandate: to evolve the Grand Touring concept for a modern audience. From the first kilometres, it was evident that this Ferrari had been shaped with balance, composure and everyday usability firmly in mind.

A MODERN SCULPTURE The Ferrari Amalfi presents itself with a composed, contemporary elegance. Finished in its launch colour, Verde Costiera – a light teal inspired by the reflections of the Amalfi Coast – the sculpted bodywork subtly shifts character as light moves across its surfaces. It is expressive without excess, refined without restraint. The design follows a fluid, minimalist philosophy, with clean surfaces and sculpted volumes forming a sleek, monolithic speedform. At the front, the absence of a traditional grille is immediately noticeable. A floating bodycoloured wing sits above a dark recessed band integrating sensors and lighting, while a long, sculpted bonnet stretches forward, hinting at the twin-turbo V8 beneath. The lower splitter adds visual width and a sense of purpose. Along the sides, a wedge-shaped theme and lighting units integrated into technical cuts create a sense of motion even at rest. At the rear, precise graphic cuts conceal the taillights, referencing Ferrari heritage through a modern lens. A wide diffuser communicates aerodynamic intent, while the integrated active rear spoiler remains discreetly hidden until required. The overall effect is cohesive and assured – a design confident in its clarity.

“As the successor to the Roma, it builds on familiar foundations while introducing meaningful advancements in design, interior execution and driving confidence.”

MINIMALIST MASTERY Inside, the Amalfi adopts a dual-cockpit layout that envelops both driver and passenger in two visually connected cells. While certain architectural elements reference the Roma, the majority of the interior has been newly developed for the Amalfi, resulting in a cabin that feels more contemporary, focussed and refined. Ferrari has simplified the interior language, prioritising clean architecture, premium materials and seamless technology integration. The dashboard introduces a monolithic layout, merging the instrument cluster and air vents into a single sculptural form. The central tunnel, milled from a block of anodised aluminium, appears suspended, housing the gear selector gate, wireless charging pad, key slot and secondary controls. Carbon fibre accents and contrasting stitching add exclusivity, while the bold interior colour palette – highlighted by Verde Bellagio in the launch configuration – draws attention toward the driver-focussed front section. The 2+ seating configuration enhances practicality, allowing the rear seats to expand cargo capacity or accommodate children. Optional comfort seats, available in three sizes, feature ventilation and a multi-programme massage function – a welcome indulgence that enhances the already relaxed atmosphere on board. HUMAN-MACHINE HARMONY Ferrari’s renewed Human-Machine Interface marks a meaningful step forward in usability. The new steering wheel returns to physical buttons, improving ergonomics and ease of recognition while driving. The iconic aluminium start button has also returned, positioned on the left. Three displays anchor the digital experience. A 15.6-inch digital instrument cluster presents driving and vehicle dynamics information with clarity,

while the 10.25-inch central touchscreen controls multimedia, navigation, climate, seat functions and vehicle settings. An 8.8-inch passenger display allows the co-driver to view engine revs and G-forces, encouraging engagement without distraction. Connectivity includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and wireless smartphone charging as standard, alongside the MyFerrari Connect system for remote vehicle monitoring. The optional Burmester Premium Audio System, delivering 1,200 watts through 14 speakers, transforms the cabin into an immersive listening environment well suited to long coastal drives. PRECISION AND POWER At the heart of the Ferrari Amalfi lies the latest evolution of the 3,855cc twin-turbo V8 from the award-winning F154 family. Producing 640cv and paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, it delivers immediate throttle response and a progressive surge of power that feels both exhilarating and composed. Performance figures are emphatic – 0–100km/h in 3.3 seconds and 0–200HP/ h in 9.0 seconds – yet what impressed us most on the roads around Albufeira was balance. Power delivery is smooth and confidence-inspiring, allowing the Amalfi to flow naturally along the route rather than overwhelm it. Braking performance stands out just as clearly. Brake-by-wire technology and the ABS Evo controller deliver strong, consistent stopping force with excellent modulation. Pedal feel remains progressive and reassuring, even under repeated heavy use, reinforcing the Amalfi’s sense of control during dynamic driving. INTEGRATED ASSISTANCE The Amalfi is equipped with a comprehensive suite of next-generation driver assistance systems designed to support rather than intrude. Features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, traffic sign recognition and driver drowsiness detection. Optional Surround View and Rear Cross Traffic Alert enhance awareness in everyday scenarios. These systems integrate seamlessly with Ferrari’s electronic architecture and work in harmony with Side Slip Control 6.1 and the car’s dynamic systems. The result is a Grand Tourer that feels secure and composed without diminishing engagement – an essential balance for a Ferrari intended to be driven regularly. THE FINISHING LINE The Ferrari Amalfi represents a thoughtful evolution of the modern Grand Tourer. As the successor to the Roma, it builds on familiar foundations while introducing meaningful advancements in design, interior execution and driving confidence. From its sculpted exterior and largely reimagined cabin to its responsive V8, assured braking performance and advanced driver assistance systems, the Amalfi delivers a cohesive and refined experience. For the OHLALA team, our time with the Amalfi in Portugal revealed a Ferrari defined by balance. It is a luxurious GT that understands elegance, usability and emotion are strongest when they work together – quietly, confidently and without compromise.

MISS OHLALA

JUST IN

98

DABUBU

HERMÈS

MIU MIU

PRADA

From viral collectables to fun fashion crossovers, here’s what had everyone talking this month with Miss Ohlala.

Just when Labubu collectors thought the hype had peaked, Dabubu arrived as its Dubai-born sibling. The wide-eyed, camel face figurine has quickly gained traction across regional social feeds, tapping into the designer-toy obsession with a Middle Eastern touch. Proof that collectables don’t need logic, just a good character, there are limited drops with strong shelf appeal right now across the region, especially online.

A luxury news story that no one saw coming, Hermès band-aids quietly took over newsfeeds. Released via the Petit h line, these lambskin patches are shaped like band-aids, designed for decorating laptops, notebooks or bags, and come in a mix of colours. Small, playful and entirely decorative, they’re another example of Hermès finding unusual ways to add a touch of luxe to everyday objects.

Miu Miu has turned UNO into a USD600 collector’s item, and it’s exactly as extra as it sounds. Created exclusively by the brand, the set includes custom graphic cards, a soft leather case with logo detailing and special packaging. Less game night essential, more coffee-table flex. It follows the same playful path as the collaboration between Bottega Veneta and Jenga.

Prada made headlines with its Kolhapuri-style sandals, drawing attention to the traditional Indian footwear. After online discussions picked up, the brand went on to credit the artisans and cultural origins behind the design. The moment highlighted how closely fashion audiences now follow references to heritage, craftsmanship and the stories behind globally recognised styles.
