And they all walked out into the real world.

Dena and her mother-in-law walked through the rooms in the guesthouse that had been prepared. The well-appointed, three-story building was nestled in a valley, offering breathtaking scenery. Mountains soared high all around them, and behind the building was a clear, sparkling lake. The women placed a bar of chocolate on each bed; they hadn’t been able to organize anything more on such short notice.

“I think you should go there, Dena,” Bentzy had told her this morning on the phone. “With my mother. We need someone who can speak to the women and the girls here, do you know what I mean?” He sat in the van, his forehead pressed against the glass. His eyes closed every so often. “It’s about a two-and-a-quarterhour drive from Vienna, but I really think it’s important that you come, both of you.”

“What…what am I supposed to do there?” Dena had asked. Dovi and Shloimy were still sleeping.

“Speak to them, tell them what is really happening in the world, calm them, encourage them…you’ll see. The ones that I spoke to refused to believe me at first. And the older ones? They were in absolute shock. It can’t be easy for any of them. It’s traumatic. Think about it! Suddenly to discover that the world you were familiar with all your life was an illusion of sorts…”

“Okay, I’ll come,” she had responded quietly. Was it possible to say that it had all started with her? Her mother and sisters would never believe this story! Neither would her friend Charna.

Dena put a bar of chocolate down in the last room and walked out to the long front balcony. It ran across the façade of the building and was lined with comfortable chairs and benches.

“Is everything good, Yehudis?” Mrs. Domb, the owner of the guesthouse, asked, emerging from one of the rooms. “It’s beautifully set up, isn’t it? What a nes that it was empty; otherwise we would not have been able to give you so many beds. This time it really is a huge group. And I’m waiting with bated breath to see these people for myself! This whole story doesn’t make sense, if you ask me. Are you sure no one is tricking

Dena’s mother-in-law nodded. “But remember, they asked us not to spread the story any further. My husband trusts your family completely, which is why he chose to bring them here.”

“Yes, of course, of course.” Mrs. Domb smiled. “I remember very well. We’ll keep quiet, of course.”

But deep down, something twists inside you.

Because this isn’t just about one missed assignment anymore.

It’s about the growing gap between who you know they could be — and who they’re choosing to be right now.

You watch them drift through their days, distracted, careless, unbothered, and you can’t help but wonder:

Where did their drive go?

Where’s the spark they used to have?

You remember the curious, eager little kid who used to light up at the simplest things. The one who used to care.

And now, that same child stares blankly at a math worksheet, shrugs, and says, “It doesn’t matter.”

And it’s like a punch to the gut.

THE EMOTIONAL TOLL YOU DON’T TALK ABOUT

Behind that indifference might be a deep sense of discouragement.

Behind that “whatever” might be a quiet, private shame.

Behind the eye rolls and resistance might be a young person who’s silently thinking,

What’s the point? I’m just going to fail anyway.

They might not even realize it, but many teens give up before they even start.

It’s safer to pretend they don’t care than to face the possibility of trying and still falling short.

So they hide — behind friends, behind screens, behind that wall of “I don’t care.”

It’s their way of protecting themselves from feeling not enough.

And as a parent, watching that unfold — watching your child disconnect from their own potential — is a pain that sits heavy in your chest.

Because you see who they are.

You know what they’re capable of.

You’re holding hope for both of you — and they can’t seem to reach for it.

You want to shake them awake.

You want to hand them your belief until they can feel it again.

But you can’t make them care.

You can only stand there — loving, worrying, waiting — hoping this isn’t who they’ll stay.

And that waiting… that helplessness…

BALSAMIC BERRY SALAD

Yes, this salad is extremely summery but there’s no harm in bottling up a bit of summer flavors to get through winter. It’s the perfect easy lunch, set with a protein and plenty of fruits and veggies.

Ingredients:

1-2 boxes of your favorite spring mix

1/2 box cottage cheese

5 snacking cucumbers, halved and sliced

1 cup berries of your choice or mango

1/4 cup craisins

1/4 cup honey slivered almonds

Saladmate balsamic vinaigrette

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix well and enjoy.

CHOPPED DELI SALAD

This chopped deli salad is so easy to make and is addictive to eat. It’s perfect to make a cold cut wrap, which makes for a filling and delicious lunch.

Ingredients:

4 6oz packages of your favorite cold cuts, cubed

1/4 red onion, finely diced

2 sour pickled, diced

1/3 cup mayonnaise

1 1/2 tbsp spicy brown mustard

1/2 tsp kosher salt

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl. Mix well and enjoy.

STIR FRY SALAD

The perfect lunch, side dish, salad or whatever you want to call it, this recipe is mouthwateringly delicious. Use whatever veggies you have on hand. It’s delicious every way.

Ingredients:

Dressing:

1/2 cup soy sauce

1 Tbsp sesame oil

1 Tbsp rice vinegar

2 Tbsp oil

2 Tbsp maple syrup

2/3 cup brown sugar

2 garlic cubes

2 cups frozen mini broccoli

1 red pepper, thinly sliced

1 8 oz box mushrooms, sliced

1/2 can baby corn, cut into four

Large handful sugar snap peas, halved

2 tsp kosher salt

1/2 box Heaven and Earth brown rice fettuccine, prepared according to package instructions.

Directions:

1. Combine all dressing ingredients in a small bowl. Set aside.

2. Heat a large saucepan over medium heat. Add a drop of oil. Sauté peppers for 3 minutes.

3. Add in snap peas and cook another 2 minutes.

4. Add the rest of the vegetables. Lower the flame and cook for an additional 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

5. Add cooked pasta. Pour dressing over and mix well. Enjoy hot or cold.

RECAP: Rivky misbehaves in the shoe store. Zeesy is having a hard time finding a new job.

The big double doors of Bnos Baila loomed ahead. Malky whispered a silent tefillah that it be a good year for her daughter, that Rivky would be well taken care of, well behaved, and successful. Then, gripping Rivky’s hand tightly so Rivky wouldn’t get lost or worse, involved in any sort of trouble, Malky moved forward up the three short steps and into the school building.

“Welcome, welcome,” a smiling lady with a short brown sheitel greeted them. Malky squinted to make out the words on her nametag. Ahh, Mrs. Fried. She was the assistant principal.

Mrs. Fried motioned them towards the hallway on the left, and Malky followed the arrows down the hall to Morah Cohen’s classroom.

“This will be your classroom this year, Rivky,” Malky pointed at the door up ahead. “You think you’ll be able to find it yourself in a few days?”

“For sure!” Rivky enthused, beaming with excitement. Then she deftly slipped her hand out of Malky’s grasp and ran ahead, bursting through the door to

her classroom. Malky hurried to catch up with her. She heard Rivky’s cheery “hello” ringing out as she reached the entrance.

“Well, hello to you!” Morah Cohen smiled warmly at Rivky. “What’s your name?”

Rivky responded without missing a beat, “Rivky Hartman.”

Morah Cohen winked at Malky. “What a welcome change from all the shy girls on the first day! It must be so nice to have such a friendly daughter,” she said.

Malky smiled tightly in response.

Rivky plopped herself down at a desk and started coloring the paper in front of her. Sitting down on a chair next to her, Malky observed the girls scattered around the classroom. Rivky looked adorable, her blonde pigtails bouncing, with a red ribbon tied in a bow around each one. There were one or two new faces, but most looked familiar from preschool. There was Esti, from down the block, and Miri Braun, whose mother was Malky’s second cousin.

Malky couldn’t help but notice that all the other girls were concentrating intently on their coloring, trying their best to keep to the lines and using different colors for little details. Rivky, in contrast, had used only three colors on the entire paper, covering large swaths in thick scribble, and was already finished while the other girls, who had come before her, were not even halfway done. Scooping up her paper and jumping out of her chair, Rivky ran to show her new morah.

“Look, I finished!” Rivky waved the paper at Morah Cohen.

“Great job!” Morah Cohen said. Then she took out another coloring page and handed it to Rivky. “Now let’s see if you can color each letter in a different color, and do a different color for each girl’s dress.”

Rivky promptly deposited the new paper at her seat and darted off to check out the bulletin boards decorating the back of the classroom. Malky checked the time on her phone – phew, in ten minutes they could already escape! But Rivky needed to be able to stay here every day! Would Morah Cohen let her stay once she wasn’t on her best behavior like today?

When she looked up, Rivky was gone. Malky’s heart started pounding, a thunderous beat exploding in her chest. Then a blue monster emerged from the morah’s closet. Well, a Rivky-sized and shaped monster, dripping in blue paint. Malky gasped. In the back of her mind, she was worrying about laundry and cleaning Rivky and getting her new earrings out from under the dripping mess, but the main message her brain was screaming was for the floor to open up and swallow her. She commanded her feet to carry her to where Rivky was standing, reaching her at the same time as Morah Cohen, who was spluttering with shock.

“What happened, Rivky?” she asked, her voice oozing with concern. Malky flinched. Mrs. Fried thought it was a mistake, a mishap, not a student looking for mischief. And why would she think that a student would misbehave on the first day?

“I like to paint,” Rivky informed her matter-of-factly.

“That’s great. I’m sure you’ll have a chance to paint sometime. But what happened with the paint just now?”

Rivky looked at her with wide eyes. “The paint spilled when I opened the bottle. But will Morah Cohen buy more blue paint? Cuz I need blue to make a sky.”

“You opened the bottle?” Mrs. Fried asked in surprise.

Somehow, she didn’t think her shvigger would find it funny.

“Yeah, it was in the closet, and I wanted to paint, so I opened it.”

“What were you doing in the closet?”

Mrs. Fried asked. “Morah Cohen gave you permission to look in the morah’s closet?”

“No, but she never said we weren’t allowed to,” Rivky defended herself.

“I hear,” Mrs. Fried said slowly, clearly mulling over the situation in her head. Malky held back the absurd urge to laugh. If it wouldn’t be her daughter, if she wouldn’t be so deeply affected by the situation, she would find it hilarious. One look at Mrs. Fried’s face, though, turned the laughter into tears pricking at the corners of her eyelids.

“Well, Rivky, now you know that you are not allowed to touch anything in the morah’s closet, ever. In first grade, it’s very important to listen to all the rules and do whatever the morah says. Is that clear?”

“What—how—” Morah Cohen was at a loss for words.

Mrs. Fried, who had poked her head in to see how things were going, came over.

“Why don’t you take her to the bathroom to wash up, and then come back,” she suggested.

When they returned fifteen minutes later, Mrs. Fried ushered them into her office.

Rivky squirmed under Mrs. Fried’s gaze, and Mrs. Fried, mistaking Rivky’s movements for a nod, smiled and suggested that they head straight home to give Rivky a full wash-up. Malky was relieved not to have to go back to the classroom, with all the other mothers staring at them. She grabbed Rivky and hustled her out before Rivky could start arguing with Mrs. Fried.

“She was literally covered in blue paint from head to toe,” Malky scrubbed Rivky’s uniform dress furiously, as if to prove her point. Shiffy burst out laughing.

“So this blue figure just started dancing around? How

long did it take you to recognize her?” Shiffy chortled.

“Shiffy, it was mortifying! It’s not funny!”

“Heh, heh, maybe you should have pretended it’s not your kid. Then the morah would have had to clean her up, instead of you. And when they figured out it was Rivky, you could have just said you didn’t realize it was her.”

“Very funny. As if any other girl in the class would have done such a thing besides for Rivky. Seriously, what am I going to do with her? How will she survive first grade? I’m so scared she’s going to get kicked out!”

“Well, it is a pretty valid fear,” Shiffy said, “considering Rivky’s past exploits and, um, unique talent to get caught up in more of the same.”

Malky groaned. “Thanks for the chizuk.” She poked through the mountain of suds covering the sink and peered into the blue lake underneath. Then, deciding to take a quick break from the endless scrubbing, she washed off her hands and plopped down on a chair.

“The only chizuk I have is that you should daven, very hard,” Shiffy offered.

“Good idea. Oh, my shvigger is beeping in. Talk to you later, Shiffy.”

“Malky! How was Rivky’s orientation?” Zeesy’s warm voice filled the line.

“Ummm, it was okay. How are you doing?” Malky was eager to shift the attention away from Rivky. She wasn’t in the mood of explaining to her shvigger what had happened. Somehow, she didn’t think her shvigger would find it funny.

“Baruch Hashem. I was wondering if we could have the pleasure of having you over this week for Shabbos, now that you’re back from the mountains.”

“Oh, that sounds amazing! I’ll run it by Shulem, but I think it should be fine.”

“Wonderful, we’re looking forward!”

Malky was relieved. At her shvigger’s house, there were no cousins for Rivky to fight with, and lots of attention for just her kids. What could go wrong?
