My baby has been having ear infections on and off every few weeks since he was 4 weeks old. What do you say about using oils like Oil of Oregano? Can too many ear infections/fluid damage the hearing? At what point should I consider seeing an ENT for tubes?
So, regarding the treatment with oregano oils and other natural supplements, there have never been any proper studies as to how well they work and if at all. There is also the potential for causing middle ear injuries in some cases by putting anything nonsterile into the ear. We all hear from people how ear pain in children cleared up with natural oils, etc., but as far as I know, this has never been studied formally, so use caution.
SEND US YOUR QUESTIONS

Ear infections cause more than half of all infections that require antibiotics in children under the age of three. These infections can be painful and, in some cases, dangerous, and often interfere with a child's development and studies.
Ear infections happen when a buildup of mucus occurs behind the eardrum (in the middle ear).
Ear infections, besides being painful, can cause decreased hearing in children by blocking the transmission of sound through thick fluids or by rupturing the eardrum, which
also interferes with the transmission of sounds to the middle ear. This often does not become evident until a child reaches school age and is found to be lagging in his or her learning due to decreased hearing, which then interferes with speech and communication.
Sometimes an ENT will recommend putting tubes in a child's ears. These are small plastic tubes that are placed in the eardrum to keep a small opening. This allows the fluid to drain and prevents a buildup that can potentially get infected. This is a relatively minor surgical procedure, and some ENTs will even do this in the office without anesthesia. Usually, if a child will have three or more ear infections in 6 months or signs of decreased hearing, the ENT may recommend tubes. Also, ear infections do not always require antibiotics. Infections that are not in both ears or not causing high fevers, in a well appearing child, the provider may discuss with the parents a watchful waiting period of up to three days to see if the infection self-resolves, which it often does.
As with everything else, these are generalized answers to the questions asked, and small nuances in individual cases can change the answers, so please discuss specific cases with your provider.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 91: Binyamin apologizes to Naomi for having falsely suspected her of tattling on him.
The Jews excitedly pack up to leave the Samson Lager camp. Josef Wangel is dying, and though Helena has disappeared, Katarina and Teresa are locked up in Elky Kush’s house.
In their hysterical and furious state, Katarina and Teresa have destroyed the Kushes’ possessions—including ripping up the many vouchers the couple has saved up. Elky is beside herself about all the lost vouchers…until she is reminded that those vouchers aren’t worth anything anymore, now that the Wangels are gone and the Jews are going to live in the outside world. The police in Vienna are alerted about the story, and the police commissioner asks his assistant, Hans Kafnika, if he knows anything about this. On his way to the Wangels, Hans nervously denies knowing about it.
A stained piece of paper on the floor of the car, written in shaky, uneven letters:
We had a backup plan to leave Austria. We didn’t believe it would ever happen. Their fear was supposed to be much stronger. Bernard’s newspaper did a big part of the work. And he did all these experiments to figure out how best to influence and control the Jews: We invited them to our parties, allowed them to make weddings in our manor house…all with that goal in mind.
Leo also helped us a lot with controlling the Jews, without him even knowing it.
And I thought that Sol would be a good replacement. But now it’s all over.
They discovered the tru
“Looks like this is where his strength ran out.” The police commissioner pointed to the last line and handed the paper over to Hans. “So, does it still look staged to you?”
“No,” his deputy said, glancing out the window of the stately room at the car standing outside. “Not at all. So I understand

and Helena. True, the agreement between them was that if any one of the Wangels would get caught and put on trial, they would not inform on anyone else, and in exchange, those others would work to help him. And for now, it seemed that Katarina was keeping to that part of the deal. But he wasn’t sure how long that would hold up, if the interrogators promised her all kinds of benefits in exchange for turning in all those who had helped them maintain this site.
Someone came out from behind him.
“Hey, Olendorf!” Hans exclaimed. “You’re here?”
“I’m here. In my role as the director of the office of the mayor of Salzburg, of course.”
“How has your boss reacted to what happened in his district for more than fifty years, under his nose?”
“Taking into account that for the past fifty years, this happened under the noses of seven other mayors, he doesn’t feel particularly confounded as the eighth one who didn’t realize anything,” Olendorf whispered quietly. “And obviously, I will be out of here at first light. The residents here recognize me from my previous visits as an officer in the Wehrmacht; Bernard had even planned to confer on me the title of Cosmos-Fuhrer….”
“And in the end he didn’t, huh?”
Hans glanced at the man who mentioned this fact with a certain frustration, as if he had truly been a candidate to rule over the whole world.
managed a crooked smile. “One way or another.”

“B’chipazon,” Bentzy told Dena on the mobile Motorola he’d borrowed from Shmulik, from the embassy. “Believe me, it’s like Yetzias Mitzrayim, 5754. The prime minister of Austria is already here— don’t ask. And a few others from the Israeli embassy. They want us to leave as fast as we can, quietly, because as soon as the news gets around that Wangel is dead, journalists are sure to show up here.
“So my father spoke to Rabbi Spitz, and with the rav here, and they decided to pack up and go right away. The Jews themselves also want to leave as quickly as possible. My father has booked the rooms in Aharon Domb’s guesthouse, and that’s where we are going to go tomorrow. So, do you hear, Dena? We’re not allowed to talk about this to anyone.”
“I hear,” Dena said. She felt like saying, Who’s here for me to talk to about it, anyway? But she didn’t

“Yes, because Josef told him that it doesn’t work out well with the story. If I’m ostensibly one of the Wehrmacht officers who is in on the secret of hiding Jews here, when I am appointed Cosmos-Fuhrer, I am supposed to enact laws that protect them, which would make it possible for them to go free. So in the next newspaper edition he wrote that I wasn’t chosen. Whatever. Tell me, what do you think is going to be with Katarina and her daughter?”
“We’ll figure it out.”
“You’ll smuggle them out of prison, right? Before someone has time to ask them one question too many.”
“Yes, we’ll get them out.” Hans

asked instead.
“The scenery? Breathtaking. Imagine mountain peaks and trees as far as the eye can see, and far away in the distance, there are even higher peaks with snow on them. The camp itself is just…no words. It looks like it froze in time…” “Fifty years ago,” she filled in for him.

“Well, it looks like the Nazis still

brought in some modern conveniences from the city, but they live in these tiny huts,” he whispered as he walked along the path, pressing the large black device to his ear. He hadn’t spoken to her since that quick call when he’d told her that they had succeeded, baruch Hashem. It had just been so hectic, with he, his father, and the others busy explaining, introducing, clarifying, and organizing. Finally now, a few hours later, he’d found a few minutes to call Dena again. He knew that she was waiting up.
“On each hut’s roof, there’s a barrel that collects rainwater, and after it is filtered, it runs into the houses through a pipe, to the only faucet in the house. They cook on primus stoves and wash laundry in basins, and they have a dairy and a bakery and a carpentry shop and a sewing shop, and a cemetery…a whole life.”
“And the people themselves?”
“All kinds. They speak a mixture of Yiddish, German, Hungarian, and Polish. Their clothes are really oldfashioned, and are obviously sewn by them.”
“How are they in terms of Yiddishkeit?”
“There are some really frum ones, and they even have a rav. Binyamin is a real lamdan, I would say, and besides him, there are a few other serious people. Then there are some whose families were assimilated even before the war…and they look pretty far.”

“How in the world did they manage to keep halachos? ! Like shechitah, for example. And you know, everything else.”
“They have everything here, from what I understand. They shecht themselves, they have a sefer Torah and a few pairs of tefillin, and some old sefarim… Those Nazis must have taken these tashmishei kedushah right after the war, from communities that had been wiped out.” He was passing by Binyamin now. The youth motioned for him to come to one of the larger structures, and when he came closer, he saw Binyamin’s grandfather standing next to two medium-sized barrels.
“It seems they make wine from raisins…” he continued. “Anyway, I have to hang up now, Dena. People here need my help.”
“Can we take this with us?” Zeide Nachum asked him worriedly.
“I hope we’ll have room in the luggage hold of the bus,” Bentzy answered kindly. “What’s in here?”
“Beer and wine that we made.” Nachum sighed. “We’ll never be able to stop thanking you all for everything. But when you’ll be my age, you’ll understand how hard it is to cut off from everything you’ve gotten used to…even if it wasn’t always good. So if I would be able to take along these barrels, it would make me very happy.”
“Then for sure you’ll be able to, Reb Nachum.” Bentzy smiled at the older man. Then he looked at his watch. “In about two hours, the buses that my father ordered will arrive. We just need to make sure to get the barrels onto the buses in a safe way, so that they don’t break.”
He grasped Mr. Einhorn’s hand as the light of the sun began to rise above them. “And it will be good, b’ezras Hashem. It will be very good.”

RECAP: Rivky misbehaves a lot during the family Shabbos.
Malky strolled down the avenue, a soft breeze playing with her sheitel.
“Who’s excited to get new shoes?” she sang out.
“Me!” came the excited response from both Rivky and Ruchie, skipping along beside the carriage.
Pulling open the door of Shoe Land, Malky gasped. The place was mobbed. She squeezed in and motioned to Rivky and Ruchie to stand next to the carriage. Pushing through the crowd, she spotted the shelves for sizes 25 and 27, and after some more maneuvering was close enough to be able to analyze the shoes left on the shelf and grab whatever looked cute.
She decided to join the line waiting for the saleslady to ensure the shoes fit properly, as she didn’t trust herself to determine if it was a good fit.
“These, Mommy! I want these!” Ruchie tugged her hand and gestured excitedly at the shoes she was trying on.
“As long as the lady says it fits you properly,” Malky said. They waited, and waited, and waited. Ruchie sat quietly
watching the other customers, while Rivky alternated between jumping, hopping, and asking when it would be their turn already. She suddenly wriggled out of Malky’s grasp and dashed across the store before Malky could stop her. She returned a few minutes later with a pair of cream Shabbos shoes five sizes too big.
“I want these shoes also, Mommy,” she held them up for inspection.
“Rivky, these are not your size,” Malky explained, “and they’re for the summer. Now we’re buying shoes for the winter. Please put them back where you found them and then wait nicely next to Mommy.”
Rivky pouted. “But I like these!”
Leaving the shoes on the floor next to Ruchie, Rivky darted off again before Malky could stop her.
After a few minutes, when Rivky had not yet returned, Malky stood on her tiptoes and craned her neck, trying unsuccessfully to spot Rivky among the crowd. When a minute passed and she still wasn’t able to find her, Malky shrugged and gave up, hoping everything was okay.

Suddenly, a commotion erupted on the other end of the store, loud enough to be heard over the din of the crowd. A young child wailing, an adult reprimanding, and…a child yelling back? Was it her imagination or did it sound suspiciously like Rivky? Malky slipped out of her place and pushed through the throngs towards the source of the noise. Getting closer, she took in the scene. Rivky was holding a shoe with a pointy heel and banging it into the back of a little girl with blonde pigtails, who was sobbing hysterically. The little girl’s mother was admonishing Rivky, and Rivky was screaming back at her.
“She took the shoes I was in middle of trying on! I told her to give them back, but she didn’t listen!”
Malky squeezed through the last knot of customers blocking her way, grabbed Rivky, and started pulling her back towards their spot, mumbling an apology over her shoulder.
Once they were safely back next to the carriage, Malky knelt down beside Rivky, looking deep into her eyes.
“Rivky, you can’t hurt someone like that. If you have a problem, come tell me and I’ll help you.”
Rivky’s eyes flashed. “It was HER fault! She took the shoes I wanted!”
“I understand that she took the shoes you wanted, but you can’t hurt her. You can come tell me and I’ll help you figure it out,” Malky repeated.
“No! I needed to tell her then! She wasn’t listening, so I needed to make her listen!”
Sensing that the conversation was going nowhere, Malky said firmly, “If you don’t behave, you won’t be getting new shoes. You need to wait nicely next to Mommy, otherwise we will have to leave the store before we buy anything.”
But we waited so long already, and we’re almost there! And what about Ruchie? She waited nicely the entire time, it wouldn’t be fair to her.
But Rivky needs to learn her lesson and see that I mean business. Otherwise, of course she won’t listen to me! Her thoughts swung back and forth like a pendulum. Finally, she made up her mind. They were leaving. ***
Zeesy scanned the classifieds with trepidation. Teacher, assistant, secretary. No, no, no. She was too old to begin a whole new career, and definitely not anything that involved using a computer, which were always Chinese to her, despite being guided by the most flawless instructions. She threw down her pen in frustration and thumped over to the fridge, rummaging around aimlessly. Grabbing an apple, she plunked back down in her chair and frowned at the newspaper.
She literally never listens to what I say. And she can get really wild or angry or out of control.
Rivky folded her arms and slid to the floor with a sulky expression on her face.
Only three more people ahead of us, Malky counted. We’re almost there.
Suddenly, she turned around and noticed that Rivky was gone. Again. She spent a quiet minute debating if she should follow through with her threat and leave even though they were so close to finishing.
I have to follow through with the consequence I told her.
“Got no answers for me, huh?” she grumbled at the newspaper. She buried her head in her hands.
The stillness of the house was punctured only by the ticking of the clock and the sound of her breathing. Zeesy felt like she was suffocating.
She grabbed her purse and hurried out of the house with sudden spontaneity. Striding down the block, she glanced around, looking for something, she wasn’t even sure what, exactly. Did she expect a random person to pop out with a contract in hand for her to sign? Still, she looked carefully at any ads posted on the street. Maybe one would give her a clue as to how she should proceed.
A sign in a store window caught her eye. Looking to Hire, the sign declared in bold letters. She looked at the entrance again and realized it was a pizza shop. No go.
A little further down the block, though, she struck gold. A small, neon pink sign hung in the window of a children’s clothing store. Looking to Hire a Saleslady, it stated clearly. Zeesy entered the store hesitantly, then reminded herself that she was a superb saleslady with years upon years of experience, and why shouldn’t they want to hire her? She approached the desk and inquired about the position.
“Either from eleven to three, or from three to seven,” the lady threw out. “You can give this to the person who wants to apply, it has our contact info,” and she thrust a

business card into Zeesy’s startled hands.
“Uh, excuse me,” Zeesy cleared her throat. “I would like to apply for the position.” She noticed the lady exchange glances with the other worker standing nearby.
“I have a lot of experience,” she added. “Is there a manager or someone I can speak to about it?”
The lady shrugged and motioned to the back of the store. “Shaindy’s over there.”
“So after all that, you didn’t even get them new shoes?” Shulem asked in disbelief.
“Yup,” Malky said. “I told Ruchie I would take her back another day. Rivky threw a royal tantrum right there in the middle of thirteenth avenue, but I didn’t give in.”
Her voice was filled with pride and only the slightest tinge of self-doubt.
“What will you do about shoes for her?”
“She can wear her Floafers,” Malky said. “I really hope—” her eyes widened, taking in the shadow flitting down the hallway towards the kitchen.
“Rivky! Why are you still up? It’s very late!”
“Look, Mommy, I finished this.” Rivky held up a coloring page with small, intricate designs, all neatly filled in with coordinating colors.
“Wow, it’s really nice, Rivky, but you were supposed to be asleep a long time ago. It’s extremely late, and you have to be up early tomorrow. Please put away the markers and try to fall asleep.”
Rivky shrugged and padded off quickly. Malky had a niggling feeling that Rivky would not be heeding her instructions. She turned back to Shulem.
“I’m nervous about her. She literally never listens to what I say. And she can get really wild or angry or out of control.”
“Isn’t it normal?” Shulem didn’t seem to think it was a big deal. “All kids have a hard time listening, no?”

“I don’t know, I think it’s a little too extreme. Either way, I hope she’ll do well in school. Tomorrow is orientation.”

It is a predicament only those who have experienced it can truly understand.
Caring for an adult child with special needs challenges is a 24-hour commitment that leaves families stretched thin. While the love never wavers, the responsibilities are relentless and quickly become overwhelming.
A new program called Daybreak is aiming to provide both relief for these families and comprehensive care for the adults themselves.
Daybreak is a full-day program designed specifically for adults with developmental and physical challenges. Participants are picked up early in the morning and return home late in the evening. In between, they are engaged in developmental activities, exciting social programming, and personal care that covers all their daily living needs.
“We realized there is a significant gap that no one has addressed in the community,” said Lazer, who oversees the program. “Especially in large families, parents simply can’t give them the attention they need, causing a ripple effect in the home. That’s why we established Daybreak. The early results couldn’t be better!”
The schedule at Daybreak includes everything from hands-on activities, to music, exercise, and life-skills workshops, along with meals, appointments and the like. Staff members are trained to work with a range of abilities, ensuring that each participant is safe, cared for and meaningfully engaged.
Families of special needs adults welcome Daybreak, the program that takes care of them all day, every day.
For families, the benefit is immediate and immense. With their loved one at Daybreak during the day, parents and siblings can attend to jobs, appointments, and other life responsibilities without constant worry. “It gives us breathing room,” said one parent. “We know our son is in good hands and enjoying himself, which lets us focus on the rest of life.”
The program’s name was chosen with intention. Just as daybreak marks a fresh start to the morning, the program offers a fresh sense of relief and possibility for participants and families alike.
Indeed, the program is going way beyond where anyone has gone before. Not only is it full day, but there are options for both six and seven day weeks. And the days are filled with activities, while the staff caters to the individuals’ every need. It’s all Daybreak, all the time.
Daybreak is currently accepting new participants and encourages families to see the program in action. “Our goal is to lift the weight off families’ shoulders while giving adults with special needs the dignity, care, and stimulation they deserve,” said (same name as above).
For more information about enrollment, families can contact Daybreak at:
Succos ended two weeks ago, but a lot of families are still in recovery mode.
Breaks have a rhythm of their own: late nights, cousins visiting, long talks around the table, and spontaneous hangouts with friends who’ve come home. It’s good, needed even — but it turns everyone’s schedule upside down.
Now school’s back, alarms are ringing before sunrise, and your teens look at you like surely this can’t be legal.
Here’s the thing: no teen is suddenly going to bed by 9:00. And forcing that won’t rebuild rhythm — it’ll just create tension. The goal isn’t strict control; it’s gentle recalibration.
1. Shift bedtime in small steps.
If your teen’s been staying up until midnight (or later), start by moving things back 15–20 minutes at a time. Dim the lights, keep conversation light, maybe put on some soft music. The goal is to signal “slow down,” not “shut down.”
2. Focus on consistency in mornings, not perfection.
Forget the idea of a family breakfast, morn-

ings in big families are survival mode. Instead, look for one consistent touchpoint: a calm good morning, a quick check-in in the car, or even a simple “you’ve got this” before they head out. Those small moments matter more than a picture-perfect start.
3. Encourage one small “reset habit.”
Ask your teen to pick one small action to help them feel organized again — laying out clothes, reviewing their schedule, or packing their bag before bed. The ownership helps them rebuild structure without being told what to do.
4. Model the rhythm you want.
Teens notice when you’re grounded -even if they don’t say it. A calm cup of coffee before the chaos or a steady tone in the morning speaks louder than a lecture about being late.
Give it a week or two. Slowly, the late nights fade, mornings get smoother, and everyone’s energy starts to level out again.
Rhythm always finds its way back- especially when you lead with calm instead of control.

A fuss-free lasagna layered with creamy cheese filling, (storebought! shh) eggplant dip, and hearty tomato sauce — no preboiling required!
Ingredients:
About ½ box of Tuscanini oven-ready flat lasagna sheets
1 ½ cups cottage cheese
2 tablespoons cream cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (for the filling)
¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 clove garlic, crushed
¾ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 large egg
½ cup store-bought Spanish Eggplant Dip (optional- but recommended)
1 (24 oz) jar Tuscanini traditional pizza sauce
1–1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese (for topping)
½ cup water
Dried basil and parsley flakes, for sprinkling
Fresh basil, for garnish (optional)
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 375° and generously grease a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray.
2. Cheese filling: In a medium bowl, stir together cottage cheese, cream cheese, 1 cup mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic, salt, pepper, egg, and eggplant dip until smooth and well combined.
3. Assemble the lasagna: Spread ½ cup pizza sauce on the bottom of the prepared 9x13 dish. Arrange a layer of 3 noodle sheets. Spread about ⅓ of the cheese mixture, then spoon about ⅓ of the remaining sauce. Add another layer of noodles, and repeat until you run out of filling. Finish the last layer with noodles topped with sauce and a generous layer of shredded mozzarella cheese.
4. Bake: Pour ½ cup water around the inside edges of the pan. Sprinkle with dried basil and parsley flakes. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 50 minutes.
5. Remove foil and bake uncovered for 10–15 minutes, until golden and bubbling. For extra browning, broil for 1–2 minutes at the end.
6. Serve: Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Serve warm.
TIP: USING CLASSIC LASAGNA NOODLES
If you’d like to use regular lasagna noodles, boil them in salted water for about 8 minutes (until al dente). Drain well, pat dry, and layer as directed in the recipe. Skip adding the ½ cup water to the pan, since the noodles are already cooked.

A bold, briny pasta bursting with Mediterranean flavor— quick, vibrant, and dairy-free.
Ingredients:
¾ pack pasta (spaghetti, penne, rigatoni, etc.)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium red onion, chopped
2-3 cloves garlic, minced
½ – ¾ cup green olives, pitted and roughly chopped
⅓ – ½ cup sundried tomatoes, chopped (or ¾ cup cherry tomatoes, chopped)
2 tablespoons capers, drained- optional but recommended
½ 24 oz jar Tuscanini pizza sauce
½ cup reserved pasta water
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Red pepper flakes, optional
Fresh basil or parsley, for garnish
Directions:
1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook pasta until desired softness. Reserve about ¼–½ cup pasta water before draining. Set pasta aside.
2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped red onion and saute for about 5-6 minutes and soft and slightly golden.
3. Add the chopped garlic, olives, tomatoes, and capers, and sauté for about 2–3 minutes to blend flavors. If using cherry tomatoes, cook for a bit longer until tomatoes are fully softened.
4. Stir in the pizza sauce and pasta water. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring to a simmer.
5. Add the cooked pasta to the skillet. Toss to coat evenly, loosening with more pasta water if needed.
6. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley. Serve hot.
TIP: If you want to make this dairy, feel free to sub the pasta water with milk/heavy cream and add mozzarella or parmesan cheese to the sauce, as desired.

You’ve planned, explained and prayed, but the meltdowns and sensitivities still appear.
It’s not disobedience. It’s not your parenting. It’s the way their brains are wired.

The most comprehensive health system in Brooklyn meets rising need for children’s emergency care by quadrupling its capacity with borough’s only pediatric trauma center
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) — On Tuesday, October 21, Maimonides Health celebrated the grand opening of its newly expanded Children’s Emergency Department —the largest freestanding children’s emergency department and only dedicated pediatric trauma center in Brooklyn. The expansion marks a major step forward in Maimonides’ ongoing effort to expand access to highquality, comprehensive care for children and families across the borough.
This new iteration of the Children’s Emergency Department offers an expanded space, with 32 treatment areas, separate ambulance and walk-in entrances, and advanced on-site imaging, including X-ray, ultrasound, and CT scanning for rapid diagnosis of emergency conditions. The Children’s Emergency Department at Maimonides Health is designed to be childfriendly, with a warm, calming environment that meets both the medical and emotional needs of young patients and their families.
This is the latest achievement in Maimonides’ efforts to continue to deliver the most cuttingedge children’s health care to Brooklyn families across multiple medical specialties. Recently, Maimonides Children’s Hospital was recognized for delivering the highest quality of care as the number-one top performer in the 2025 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Ranking by Vizient out of 98 children’s hospitals across the country.
“This new facility demonstrates our deep commitment to the families of Brooklyn,” said Ken Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Health. “The expanded Children’s Emergency Department enables us to deliver world-class, compassionate care close to home, ensuring that every child receives the specialized attention they deserve in their moment of need. Brooklyn families should never have to leave their home borough to access the care they need.”
The project comes at a critical time, while nationally children account for over 30 million emergency department visits annually, approximately 80% of U.S. EDs are not fully prepared to handle children’s emergencies.
The Children’s Emergency Department is staffed 24/7 by board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physicians, fellows, and nurses, as well as specialists across more than 30 pediatric subspecialties, from oncology and cardiology to surgery and intensive care. It is also home to Brooklyn’s only Pediatric Trauma Center, certified by the New York State
Department of Health, and fully equipped to treat serious injuries such as major falls and car accidents.
“I want every Brooklyn parent to know that in their moment of greatest fear, their child will be cared for by experts who understand children medically and emotionally,” said Dr. Alexander Arroyo, Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Maimonides Health. “This expansion allows us to provide high quality, compassionate care to more children than ever before.”

“The new Children’s Emergency Department represents an extraordinary step forward in pediatric care for our community,” said Dr. Jeffrey Avner, Chair of Pediatrics at Maimonides Health. “From everyday illnesses to the most complex medical emergencies, our multidisciplinary pediatric team is ready to provide the highest level of care in an environment designed especially for children and their families.”
“This expansion reflects our commitment to strengthening emergency care for all of Brooklyn,” said Dr. Eitan Dickman, Chair of Emergency Medicine at Maimonides Health. “By growing our pediatric and specialty emergency services side by side, we’re ensuring that no matter their age, all patients can receive timely, expert care in a modern, efficient setting.”
Members of Maimonides’ leadership were joined by:
• New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams
• Senator Stephan Chan
• Assembly Member Alec Brook-Krasny
• A representative of Assembly Member Lester Chang
• New York City Council Member Mercedes Narcisse
The opening of the Children’s Emergency Department is part of Maimonides Health’s ongoing investment to increase emergency and specialty care across Brooklyn. It follows the unveiling of a new Psychiatric Emergency
Department—offering behavioral health services in a safe, therapeutic setting— and precedes the expansion of the adult Emergency Department, which will feature centralized, same-floor imaging for added convenience. Together, these improvements in quality of care ensure that patients of all ages can receive the expert, dignified, and timely emergency care they need. The newly expanded Children’s Emergency Department was part of a major modernization project that included an enlarged Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a relocated cardiac catheterization laboratory, and enhanced facilities for pediatric cardiac surgery. Collectively, these improvements solidify Maimonides Health’s position as Brooklyn’s most comprehensive center for pediatric and family care.
Maimonides Health is Brooklyn’s largest healthcare system, serving more than 1 million patients each year through the system’s three hospitals, 1,800+ physicians, and more than 80 community-based practices and outpatient centers. The system is anchored by Maimonides Medical Center, one of the nation’s largest independent teaching hospitals and home to centers of excellence in numerous specialties; Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital (formerly New York Community Hospital), a 130-bed adult medical-surgical hospital; and Maimonides Children’s Hospital, Brooklyn’s only children’s hospital, and only pediatric trauma center.
Maimonides’ clinical programs rank among the best in the country for patient outcomes, including its Heart and Vascular Institute, Neurosciences Institute, Bone and Joint Center, and Cancer Center. For additional information, please visit www.maimo.org and follow us on LinkedIn, X, Instagram, and Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok.
Maimonides Children’s Hospital is the only Children’s Hospital in Brooklyn, caring for children 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our staff comprises an outstanding team of board-certified pediatric physicians, surgeons, nurses, and nurse practitioners who dedicate their lives to the health and well-being of children. Our team of board-certified pediatric specialists collaborate with the team to ensure each child receives the expertise and best care possible in an environment created and designed for their comfort.
