SEND US YOUR QUESTIONS
There are several small topics addressed in this one question. First, it is important to understand that in their first and second year of daycare/school, it is normal for children to develop viral illnesses quite often; as many as one or two febrile events per month are usually not concerning. This is due to several factors. Children do not fully develop strong immune systems until the age of 3-4. Also, children in this age group are being exposed to viruses for the first time and developing immunity to them. Lastly, as we all know, children in this age group are not that great at infection-controlling behaviors. So yes, it is normal for a child to get a fever frequently at this age, and no, it does not mean that they have a poor immune system.
As far as vitamin supplements, there are some vitamins that are known to have positive boosting effects on the immune system. These include vitamins A,C,D,E, zinc, and selenium. Each of these supplements helps boost the immune system in a different manner. They are not treatments for viruses, but they may decrease the duration and severity of illness if taken appropriately. Some vitamins can be toxic at large doses, so be sure to discuss use with your primary care provider. As medical providers, we have seen many stories where people have taken supplements with no guidance and have had negative outcomes. Please make sure
Have a health question you’d like answered in this column? Write to: info@phcmedical.org
As we head into the winter season, l've noticed my children have been frequently getting sick. I'm wondering if supplementing with vitamins could help support their immune health and possibly reduce how often they get sick. Are there specific vitamins you'd recommend, and is there evidence that they make a real difference?
to ask your doctor about any use of unfamiliar vitamins and supplements.
As far as routine use of supplements, there has been a lot of talk about supplements that fight viruses, help with sleep, depression, weight loss, etc. While many of these supplements are safe and promote good health, some can have a negative impact on existing conditions and cause dangerous interactions with other medications. For example, berberine has become pretty popular recently due to the positive effects on weight loss and cholesterol lowering activity. However, this supplement can be unsafe for pregnant women and have negative effects on nursing babies. It also has pretty significant GI side effects. Vitamin D is another example. When used in healthy doses, it promotes immune health as well as bone health. However, in large doses, it can cause bone, parathyroid, and liver damage. Caution and careful investigation are necessary before starting new vitamins and supplements. Healthy adults with normal metabolism and digestion usually don't require vitamin supplements unless there is a specific condition that requires them. Speak to your medical provider for further clarification. Your local vitamin salesman will usually also have a wealth of information about the safe use of vitamins and supplements.

ESTHER RAPAPORT
NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 90: Binyamin has managed to injure Josef’s shoulder. Sol tries to help him, but Josef shouts angrily that he doesn’t want to be touched by any Jew. Bentzy, his father, and the others they’ve brought kill Bernard and lock up Katarina and Teresa. As they continue on to find Helena and free the other Jews, a warm, hopeful, and happy atmosphere begins to spread among the Jews.
Naomi raised her eyes from her list when Aryeh walked into the house. “Do you think we should take more than one box of laundry detergent with us?” she asked practically. “And what will be with my basin? They said it’s not a good idea to take too much luggage.”
“Don’t take the basin,” he said, and sat down next to the large quilt cover into which Naomi was putting everything. “I’m sure we will manage. Maybe there are public washing machines there, where you can pay and use them.”
She nodded, wondering about the unknown “there.” “But I don’t want to get stuck without detergent, and the store is for sure closed. Tell me, what’s with your finger?”
“Because the cream that Dr. Katzburg gave you is almost finished. I think I should go and ask her for a bit more. After all, she won’t be schlepping all the medical equipment along, right?”
“Makes sense.”
“So I’ll leave now.” She smiled. “I can’t believe it’s a quarter to ten at night, and I’m just going out now!”
“Be careful on the way,” he said. “It’s the beginning of the month, and it’s very dark outside.”

She opened the door—and found herself facing her brother. “Binyamin!” she exclaimed, and then looked down at the ground. Somehow, in the whole uproar and the excitement that had overtaken them all, she and Binyamin hadn’t yet had a chance to speak face to face.
Aryeh appeared at her side. “How are you, Binyamin? What a chashuve guest! The most important person in the camp tonight!”
“The person who is most guilty of being choshed b’kesheirim, suspecting someone who is innocent,” Binyamin said. Behind him, lights twinkled in the distance, as people searched every inch of the grounds to make sure that there was no danger to anyone anymore. “I’m sorry, Naomi. Now I know for sure that it was not you who told on me. I hope you can forgive me.”
“I don’t know how you could have ever thought it was me,” she said. And despite the fact that in all the scenarios she had envisioned, since he had falsely accused her, she cried when she said this sentence, now she said it lightly. “Anyway, tell me, what’s with the Wangels? Where is Helena?”
is left for them to take, because we heard a lot of violent banging and smashing from inside. And Bernard is dead, as you know.”
“And Josef?”
“He doesn’t let anyone come even close to treat him. Not that I know why anyone would want to. He barely dragged himself to the courtyard of the manor house, and when he wasn’t allowed to enter the house, he got into his car. They immediately let the air out of his tires so he couldn’t just crash through the gate, and now he’s sitting there in the car, with Hanter’s men guarding him.”
“But what if he has a weapon?”
“I’m sorry, Naomi. Now I know for sure that it was not you who told on me. I hope you can forgive me.”
“She still hasn’t been found. They’ve searched the entire estate, including the roof.” He smiled for a moment. “They finished searching every corner of the camp, and so far, nothing. Either she left before everything started, or she ran away afterward, because one of their two cars isn’t here.”
“And what about the other Wangels?” Aryeh asked.
“Katarina and Teresa are locked into Mottel Kush’s house. We need to think about where to move them, because Mottel and his wife want to go in to pack their things before we leave tomorrow. Although I don’t know how much
Aryeh queried.
“He doesn’t. They searched him thoroughly beforehand; he doesn’t even have the energy to resist, because he’s lost tons of blood. If you ask me, he’s dying a slow death.”
“What about you, Binyamin? Have you managed to eat something and to get some rest?”
“I ate, yes, Mama fed me enough to make up for the last few days—believe me! But I asked her to let me skip the rest for now. We’ll rest when we get out of here. I can’t waste these last few hours.”
“As if it was so pleasant for you here,” Naomi ribbed as she stepped outside.
“No, but there are things that I have to do before we leave. Like take my work tools, for example.”
“Your work tools?”
“What are we going to do in the outside world, Naomi?” he asked his sister somberly. “Hanter claims that there are still Nazi sympathizers in the world, and this place, which is going to become public very soon, might draw them. So tomorrow morning, we are going to be picked up and taken away from here, and the goodhearted Hanters are

out on the paths at this late hour. Most of the windows were still closed tightly—out of habit—but the doors were open, and people were going in and out.
She was nearing the clinic, wondering about Dr. Katzburg’s cream that wasn’t really healing Aryeh’s deep cut, and about some other, more major ailments which the kind doctor did not have any magic solutions for. She suddenly thought about the fact that they’d be going out into the world, where medicine was much more advanced. With no offense to the knowledge of their dedicated doctor, maybe real doctors, who had gone to medical school and learned from other real doctors, would have solutions to those ailments?
She turned her head at the sound of voices coming from Elky Kush’s house. There was a huddle of people there, and Naomi felt an urge to go and see what was happening to Katarina and Teresa. The door to the little house was open. The shouting was actually Elky’s, though Naomi couldn’t understand a word she was saying, especially as in the background, there was the noise of manic laughter. It was an inhuman sound. Naomi ignored the people standing outside and walked inside.
the wall, and the calm, measured tones of what sounded like Chaya, her mother. Naomi carefully approached and saw that Elky was still screaming.
“What did they do here?! What did they do?! Months of work! Do you know how much I worked for these vouchers?! It’s almost a third of my savings!”
On the floor, feathers that had once been part of the Kush couple’s quilts floated amidst the destruction, along with scraps of familiar papers—precious ones. Naomi picked up one of them, half of a fifty-mark voucher.
“Whatever wasn’t in my closet was torn up and destroyed! Why did I leave these vouchers under the mattress? ! Why? !”
“She’s crying!!” Katarina howled with laughter. “She’s crying about the vouchers! Brainless Jewess!!”
In the face of Katarina’s dreadful jeering, it suddenly became stunningly clear to Naomi that Katarina had picked up on something very significant, something that the others had not yet realized.
“Be quiet already, Katarina!” she heard herself shouting. “Do you hear me? Stop it now!”
The Nazi stared at her with red eyes and suddenly fell silent.
“Elky.” Chaya was speaking softly. “Elky, calm down. It doesn’t matter now. Nothing is important anymore, because we’re going free, baruch Hashem.”
The house was a horror scene. Everything was broken, with shattered dishes and torn clothing thrown all over the house, together with pieces of wood that were still identifiable as having been part of a table, bed, or chair. Katarina was cackling uncontrollably, and Teresa was sitting on the floor near the wall, her lips pressed tightly together. Two people were standing silently across from them, guarding the Nazis. Where was Elky? Naomi heard her shrill voice from the other side of
“What doesn’t matter?” Elky sobbed hysterically, not noticing Naomi standing at the side. “Do you know how much I worked for each of these vouchers? I worked my heart out! And what do we have left now? A few thousand marks, not more!”
“But Elky, these vouchers were produced by the Wangels,” her mother-in-law, who had just walked in, said, as she cautiously approached her daughter-in-law. Naomi saw from the expression in her eyes that she had also figured it out.
“So what?”
“So it would be wise for you to find other things to pack and take
along, because these vouchers—even the ones that weren’t ripped up—have no real value. You will have nothing to do with them once we leave this place!”
Elky didn’t answer. She just gazed at the shredded vouchers floating around in the wind outside. One of the people standing there bent down for a moment, but then said something and stood back up.
No one else made the effort to bend down and pick up any more vouchers. ***
The deputy police commissioner’s car groaned as it drove uphill. “It’s a nightmare with this car,” he muttered to the two friends sitting quietly in the back seat. “It’s not exactly made for the roads of the northern Alps. And the night lighting in these remote areas…”
The radio crackled in its cradle, and Hans pressed the button. If the police commissioner himself was looking for him now, that meant something was awry. The big question was whether it had to do with the sudden radio silence from the Wangels or not. For many years already, every time a tense moment came up, he asked himself a variation of this question.
“Kafnika?” “Yes.”
“Are you in the office?” “Not quite.”
“Where are you?” “On a personal outing. Why?”
“Because I need you urgently.” The commissioner’s voice did not bode well. “Do we have anything about Josef Wangel, from the fur factory, in our files? There shouldn’t be, right?”
“Nothing that I know of.” The car suddenly swerved to the side of the road, as Hans and his friends exchanged nervous glances.
“They have production facilities in the Dachstein region, do you know about that? We just got a message from the Salzburg police about a very strange story, which sounds delusional. They got there tonight after a call and found a huge group of Jews who apparently have been held there since World War Two! Does that not sound crazy to you?!”
“One hundred percent crazy. Someone is pulling a fast one on you.” Hans tried to keep his breaths steady and hoped that his superior couldn’t hear his forced casualness. “They must be professional actors.”
“But what is their goal?”
“Do I know? Maybe they’re Jews who felt like their wretched state in the world hasn’t gotten enough attention lately, so they’re trying to reawaken the world’s sympathy? Or is it a professional movie, and the producers wanted the police’s shock to appear natural, so they filmed it all without their knowledge?”
“Are the dead people part of the production?”
“Dead people?!”
“Yes. I need you there, Hans. Will you join me in my helicopter?”
“I’m really not in the Vienna region now. Give me an exact location, and I’ll make my way over there myself.”

Bridging the Gap Between Parents and Teens.
SENDING HIM BACK TO YESHIVA – WITH LOVE THAT LASTS BEYOND GOODBYE
There’s something tender about packing up again after bein hazmanim. The folded shirts, the snacks tucked into the corner, the tefillin bag checked one more time, it’s all familiar. But behind the packing lists and reminders lies something deeper: the quiet hope that he goes back feeling strong, secure, and loved.
And yet, it’s easy to get caught in the flurry of last-minute stress. The undone chores, the messy room, the things he didn’t help with before leaving. But here’s the thing – the final moments before he heads off can
SHIFRA FRIED
leave an imprint that lasts far longer than we realize. The energy we send him with often becomes the tone he carries for the next few weeks.
If we send him off with frustration—raised voices, criticism, or tension...that feeling can linger even after he’s unpacked his bags. But if we send him off with warmth, confidence, and a calm goodbye, that too stays with him—fueling him quietly from within.
Sending Him Off with Calm and Confidence
Goodbyes don’t need to be dramatic to be meaningful. Boys are intuitive; they feel the mood even when we don’t say much.
If we can keep those last hours positive and grounded, it helps him leave with emotional stability instead of guilt or heaviness.
A few small things go a long way:
• A calm tone, even if you’re running behind schedule.
• A quick word of pride: “It’s so nice having you home—you bring great energy to the house.”
• A quiet reminder: “You’ve got this. We believe in you.”
He doesn’t need perfection—he just needs to feel your confidence in him.
While He’s Away: Staying Connected Without Hovering
Once he’s back in yeshiva, the house feels different. It’s natural to miss him. But connection doesn’t have to mean constant communication. In fact, steady, thoughtful gestures often mean more than frequent contact.
You can:
• Write a short note for him to find once he’s there—a few warm lines folded into a notebook.
• Send a letter once in a while that focuses on encouragement, not updates or pressure.
• Let him be the one to reach out sometimes— showing that you trust him to hold the relationship too.
Love doesn’t mean hovering. It means being there— reliably, quietly, lovingly—without taking over.
Showing He’s Missed, Without Making Him Feel Responsible
There’s a healthy way to let him know he’s missed— without loading it with guilt. Missing him can sound like,
“We love having you around—can’t wait for the next time you’re home.”
not
“The house feels so empty without you—we can’t manage!”
You can keep a small ritual waiting for his return—a favorite food, a walk together, or another family moment that signals, you belong here, and we’re excited when you’re home.
It reminds him that home is steady and welcoming, not demanding or heavy.
The Goodbye That Lasts
Sending him off to yeshiva is an act of trust.
You’re trusting that the love, values, and connection you’ve built will travel with him—even when you’re not there to remind him.
When he leaves with positive energy, he carries that into his learning, his davening, and his friendships.
And when he knows you’re behind him—not hovering, not frustrated, but truly proud—that’s the kind of love that stays alive across distance.
So this time, as you pack his bag and give that last hug, take a deep breath.
Send him off with warmth. With belief. With calm.
Because those feelings stay with him far longer than any snack or reminder ever will.

RECAP: Rivky goes to a friend’s house and Malky panics that she is lost again. She tries to explain to Rivky afterwards that she needs to let her know if she goes somewhere. Zeesy is fired from her job.
Zeesy fiddled with the lock and let herself in. She shuffled to the table and sat down heavily. Her mind and body were weighed down with the heavy feeling of being unwanted, not useful, not needed, rejected. She was churning with thoughts, feelings, emotions, all swirling around in a muddled mess. Processing the events of the morning, being fired, was hard enough, and mixed together with the pain and anger was worry for the future and a sense of hopelessness. If Babies ‘n More didn’t want her, a dedicated and devoted worker for so long, then who would want her? What would she do with herself the whole day?
“Rivky, would you like to help Bobby set the table?” Layala proffered some forks as Rivky scampered over eagerly. “Put two by each plate, like this,” she demonstrated.
Rivky conscientiously set out all the forks, then moved on to the knives and spoons. Layala returned to the kitchen to tend to some last-minute preparations,
checking in on Rivky every few minutes. By the third time she poked her head in, Rivky had disappeared. Layala inspected the table carefully. Rivky had done a great job, except…what was that pile of spoons in middle of the second table? She looked closer and noticed that about half the table settings were missing spoons.
“That girl,” she commented to no one in particular, “has an attention span like a fly. If she can get distracted and run off in middle of setting a table…” she shook her head with a rueful smile, then quickly finished setting out the spoons and headed back to the kitchen.
Half an hour later, Layala was ensconced on the couch with daughters and daughters-in-law around her and assorted grandchildren on the floor in front of her.
“Ahhhh, nothing like a family Shabbos,” Layala breathed, closing her eyes and leaning her head back against the couch cushion. Suddenly, the peaceful atmosphere was broken with a
blood-curdling shriek.
“GIVE ME THE DOLL! I WAS PLAYING WITH IT!”
“No! It’s mine!” Yitty, Shiffy’s three-year-old, protested. Rivky was breathing heavily with anger and looked ready to clobber Yitty.
“GIVE IT BACK TO ME! RIGHT NOW!” Rivky lunged for the doll nestled in Yitty’s protective arms, yanking it away and pushing her over with a hard shove.
Pandemonium erupted. Yitty burst into loud wails as Layala, Malky, and Shiffy all tried getting involved at once. Rivky refused to consider any compromises, insisting she had been playing with the doll first. The altercation ended with Malky dragging a screaming and kicking Rivky to her bedroom to calm down, the doll confiscated and safely ensconced in the trembling arms of a whimpering Yitty.
By the time the men arrived home an hour later, there were no traces of what had transpired, and a tranquil atmosphere had settled once again, especially since Rivky had been in the bedroom most of the time.
“Who’s ready for Zeidy to bentch them?” All the kids lined up and patiently waited for their turn. Except Rivky.
“Rivky, run over to Zeidy and he’ll bentch you,” Malky prompted her.
“Don’t wanna,” was the terse response.
“Rivky, zeeskeit, all the kinderlach are getting bentched now. It’s a very special thing. Come quickly to Zeidy. I’ll come with you if you want.”
“Don’t wanna!” came the predictable response, a few decibels louder than before.
Since when were bribes so major? Was it normal for a six-year-old to demand such a reward simply for doing something she was supposed to do?
“Zeeskeit, you can have a yummy nosh if you go to Zeidy so he can bentch you,” she said firmly.
Rivky did not go and no one pressed the matter further.
Layala had volunteered to watch all the kids Shabbos morning so their tired mommies could sleep in a little. She had distributed yogurts, Shabbos cereal, and finally a special Shabbos treat to all the kids. She finally had a chance to sit down while the children savored their treats.
Her smile of satisfaction turned to a frown as she watched Rivky pluck a handful of Mike & Ikes out of her little sister Ruchie’s box and pop it into her own mouth. Ruchie, surprisingly, didn’t seem too disturbed; in fact, she didn’t let out any protest. She did, however, edge closer to Layala and hold her box more protectively. Layala was curious.
Malky, on the other hand, got the grumbles, nothing outright, but a low murmur of discontent
Malky sighed and glanced at Shulem, her questioning eyes seeming to implore him to answer her dilemma: should she keep pushing, or give in and just let it go?
Layala decided to intervene.
“Come, Rivky,” she whispered. “Go to Zeidy and then I’ll give you a special treat.”
Rivky looked up in interest. “What’s the treat?”
“A nosh. You’ll see when I give it to you.”
“I also want a new doll and ice cream from the ice cream store,” Rivky countered.
Layala almost dropped the bowl she was holding.
“Did Rivky just take from your treat?” she asked Ruchie.
“Yeah. Lots of times she does it,” Ruchie shrugged in resignation.
When she tried the same trick with Yitty, though, Yitty reacted with loud shrieks of objection.
“Hey! You can’t take my nosh! It’s mine!”
Rivky’s response was to grab even more candies and stuff them into her mouth. Layala deftly scooped them out and tossed them into the garbage.
“Rivky, we can’t take from someone else’s nosh,” she said, opening another box and handing some extra candies to Yitty, then taking her onto her lap to calm her down. ***
Malky was exhausted. Shabbos had been enjoyable, but keeping on top of Rivky had been hard work. In the afternoon, Shiffy had offered to watch everyone’s kids, but had admitted to Malky that having Rivky there would be too much for her, so Malky had stayed outside and watched Rivky the entire time. It wasn’t fun, since Rivky kept picking fights with cousins and acting wild. Shiffy, of course, got all the accolades, as the siblings gratefully thanked her. Malky, on the other hand, got the grumbles, nothing outright, but a

low murmur of discontent with the havoc Rivky was wreaking and her violence towards younger cousins. Now, Malky was more than ready for bed, but Rivky was still up. All the other cousins had drifted off somewhere between Havdalah and the end of Melava Malka, but Rivky, despite having been put to bed an hour earlier, was still bouncing around.
“Rivky, please go back into bed right away!” Malky called out.
“No,” was Rivky’s simple response. She slipped out of the kitchen and started jumping on the couch.
“We don’t say no to a mother. Please go into bed right now, otherwise I’ll have to take away your doll.”
“I’ll just grab it back, cuz it’s mine,” Rivky dismissed the threat. Then she ran to the front door, swung it open, and ran out into the inky blackness.
Terrified, Malky ran after her, which just made Rivky run even faster. Malky was only able to catch up with her because Rivky tripped and fell. Malky caught up just in time and grabbed Rivky, who had been about to run off again.
“Rivky,” Malky panted, barely able to breath, “this is very dangerous. You can’t run outside at night in the dark by yourself. Come back inside right now!” Malky dragged along a reluctant Rivky, who was arguing that it’s not dangerous. She didn’t bother responding, both because there was no reasoning with Rivky, and because she physically couldn’t – it took all her energy to hustle Rivky back inside. Luckily, Shulem was standing right near the door, and quickly picked Rivky up and carried her back to her bed.
Malky had a three-minute reprieve until Rivky made her next appearance, demanding a drink. Even once she was back in bed, Malky could hear her jumping on it.
Rivky finally, finally drifted off at two in the morning.
“What should we do with her?” Malky vented to Shulem in frustration. “Like, what will work? How can we get her to behave?”
Shulem’s only response was, “I don’t know. I really don’t know.”
