traumaonpolice

One member of the police force dies by suicide every week on average, highlighting the mental health toll on South Africa’s overworked and under-resourced first responders

The latest data presented by the police in the first half of the year reveals a sharp increase in both suicide attempts and deaths over the past three financial years

During the 2022-’23 period, two police officers attempted suicide, and 45 died by suicide

In 2023-’24, these numbers rose to four attempts and 62 deaths For 2024-’25, suicide deaths slightly decreased to 54, while attempts increased to six In the current financial year, there has been one suicide attempt and three confirmed deaths so far

Police officers are not alone South African paramedics and ambulance personnel, emergency care nurses and doctors, firefighters and rescuers experience depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and burnout at rates far higher than the general population, according to a study of the mental health of first respondersin the South African Journal of Psychology

PUTTINGLIVESATRISK

The South African Society of Psychiatrists (Sasop) warns that chronic exposure to trauma, coupled with limited resources and lack of mental health support, puts the lives of first responders at risk, along with the lives of those they work to help and protect

Board member of Sasop Dr Alicia Porter said workers on the frontline of responding to crime, domestic violence, large-scale road accidents, medical emergencies and natural disasters are disproportionately susceptible to adverse mental health outcomes

“A study released earlier this year among South African police officers and paramedics showed that 47,3% would qualify for a diagnosis of depression, 37,8% for generalised anxiety disorder, and 48,5% for post-traumatic stress disorder,” says Porter

These levels of mental distress far exceed the prevalence in the general population, of depression and mood disorders estimated at 9,8%, anxiety disorders at 15,8%, and PTSD at 2,3%

Other studies have found that 30% of Western Cape ambulance personnel experience PTSD, and recorded high levels of burnout in advanced life support paramedics in Gauteng with 30% suffering total burnout and 63% experiencing burnout related to work, patient care or personal stress

FEARINGFORTHEIRSAFETY

The parent said while they understood the seriousness of the allegations and supported accountability, the level of hatred directed at their family had gone too far “We are fearing for our lives

We’ve received messages and threats from people we don’t even know The public doesn’t realise there are families and children behind these names We are not sleeping at night ”

They urged the public to stop spreading the video and refrain from discriminating against the learners and their families while investigations are still underway

“We ask people please to stop judging before the truth is fully known Let the school and police do their job These are still children, on all sides, and they need support and guidance, not hatred ”

LEARNERSFACECRIMINALCHARGES

learners who were charged with assault following an attack on a fellow learner have been released on R2 000 bail The learners appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court last Thursday National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)

PSYCHIATRISTS WARN OF MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS AMONG FIRST RESPONDERS

“Underneath the uniforms are people facing the same mental struggles as many of us, but their work environment is unique in that they are among few professions where the very nature of their jobs repeatedly and consistently puts them in extremely stressful and high-risk situations, endangering not only their physical safety but also mental well-being

“Untreated mental health conditions among first responders hamper their ability to do their jobs effectively, and impacts negatively on their quality of life and personal relationships,” she says

Mental health disorders are a leading cause of disability both worldwide and in South Africa, where a mental health treatment gap of between 75% and 90% means the majority of people go untreated, according to a study that was outlined in the National Library of Medicine

LACKOFRESOURCES

Porter says this was due to the country’s low provision of resources for mental health treatment, particularly in the public sector where most first responders are located, coupled with pervasive stigma around mental health issues

Employee assistance programmes (EAP) and wellness interventions are of “uneven quality” among emergency services, and employees are reluctant to seek help in the workplace because of actual or perceived lack of confidentiality

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Police highlighted its concerns last year about the lack of adequate employee health and wellness interventions for police officers, after the police’s management advised that the entire police structure has only 621 health and wellness employees to service over 187 000 personnel

“Stigma is particularly heightened in uniformed work cultures, worsened by a lack of confidentiality which raises fears that workers who show signs of trauma or ask for help will be found unfit for duty, impacting negatively on their careers and income ”

She concludes by advising emergency healthcare and first response providers to provide “confidential, independent pathways” to encourage help-seeking, and to contract registered trauma and mental health clinicians to provide support clearly separated from employees’ line management reporting

spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the other two juvenile accused appeared in a different court One of them was assessed and released on a warning, while the other was released into the care of their parents

Their bail conditions include:

. The accused must not contact the complainants and witnesses directly or indirectly

. If they see the complainants they must walk in a different direction

. They are prohibited from entering the school premises until the case is finalised

. They are to submit their cellphones and pins

. Refrain from intimidating the complainants and witnesses directly or indirectly

. Not be involved in any criminal activity

The NPA said five cellphones and pins were handed over in court, with one outstanding The accused would study at home, the education department providing a venue for them to write exams in Hence, the case has been postponed to 20 January 2026 The parent said they are not asking anyone to excuse what happened “We just want the hatred to stop ”

Lagoontrialwellpointsinstalled

Efforts to restore the Milnerton Lagoon have taken another step forward, with the City commencing the installation of trial well points along the Milnerton coastline

The initiative aims to assess the feasibility of pumping clean seawater into the lagoon, a short-term intervention designed to improve water quality while long-term infrastructure upgrades continue in the catchment

SEAWATERINCLUSION

According to the City introducing seawater could help increase oxygen and salinity levels, both of which are critical for supporting aquatic life and reducing odour caused by poor water circulation and pollution build-up

“Geophysical studies and yield testing of the trial wellpoints have already been completed,” a City statement confirmed

“Feedback is expected within the next few weeks on the success of these tests and the next steps for implementation ”

The results will inform whether the proposed seawater pumping system can be expanded as part of the lagoon’s broader remediation and recovery plan, a key

focus for residents, environmental groups and City officials alike

The Milnerton Lagoon, long affected by pollution and environmental degradation, has been the subject of ongoing rehabilitation efforts

These include major infrastructure upgrades to wastewater systems, stormwater management and the broader catchment area to prevent contaminants from entering the lagoon

By increasing oxygen and salinity levels the City’s seawater trial aims to create a healthier environment for aquatic species while infrastructure improvements progress upstream

Atotal of 32 African Penguin chicks have recently been admitted to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds’ (Sanccob) Cape Town Centre in Table View for rehabilitation and care

Many of the young birds arrived in a fragile condition, suffering from emaciation and high blood parasite loads, requiring immediate medical attention and intensive care from Sanccob’s experienced rehabilitation team

“As part of our strict Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) prevention measures, all new arrivals are placed in quarantine and tested before entering the main facility,” the organisation confirmed “This crucial step helps safeguard the seabirds already in our care and prevents the potential spread of the virus ” Sanccob’s dedicated staff and volunteers continue to work tirelessly to provide round-the-clock care, nutrition and treatment to ensure every chick has the best possible chance of survival and release back into the wild

POSITIVEFORHPAI

Sanccob confirmed the first African Penguin has tested positive for HPAI, marking a new development in ongoings outbreak among Western Cape seabirds In August almost 1 000 seabirds have now been confirmed with HPAI, and the spread remains deeply concerning TygerBurger previously reported that since early July, a new outbreak of HPAI has been confirmed in wild seabirds across the province, the first wild-bird detections since April 2024

Infected birds often display neurological signs, such as tremors, head twitches and seizures While HPAI occasionally infects mammals and humans, experts emphasise that the risk to the public remains very low when basic safety precautions are followed

The work will be carried out between 08:00 and 17:30 from Monday to Saturday In Table View, work will be done along the following roads: Cross Road, Circle Road, South

Road, Keats Road, Van De Graaf Road, St Chad’s, Bay Beach Avenue, Blaauwberg Road, Gie Road, R27 between Link Road and Sandown Road, Parklands Main Road and Wood Drive

The work will involve repairs to the footway, remove existing asphalt and laying new

asphalt Once completed, new road markings will be applied to improve road safety and visibility In Sunset Beach, road resurfacing work will be carried out along Bay Beach Avenue

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and use alternative routes where possible to minimise delays

Sanccob is giving tiny penguin chicks a fighting chance through expert rehabilitation.
Many of the chicks arrived weak and underweight, but Sanccob is determined to help them recover.

Two months after raising urgent concerns about ongoing pollution in the Milnerton Lagoon, community advocacy group RethinkTheStink says there has been little visible improvement to water quality in the area

According to Peter Walsh from RethinkTheStink, residents are growing increasingly frustrated by what they describe as “acknowledgement without action”

“It’s been 60 days since we first brought this to the attention of the Speaker of Council and the City Manager,” Walsh said in a social media post “Despite receiving polite replies and promises, the reality on the ground hasn’t changed the water still stinks, untreated discharge continues, and the same health and safety risks remain for residents who visit the lagoon ”

Walsh added that the condition of signage warning the public about pollution is also cause for concern “Many of the signs are faded, illegible, or missing altogether Some are only in English, making them inaccessible to parts of our community,” he said

The organisation has repeatedly urged the City to demonstrate “real accountability” by sharing concrete plans, timelines, and measurable progress toward restoring the lagoon

COMMUNITYMEETING

In response, the City of Cape Town acknowledged the community’s concerns and confirmed that more detailed feedback will be provided at the upcoming Milnerton Lagoon Community Meeting, scheduled for tonight (Wednesday 29 October) from 18:00 to 20:00 at the

The City’s signage around Milnerton Lagoon has deteriorated, leaving many unaware of the serious health risks still posed by the polluted water
Many of the Milnerton Lagoon’s warning signs are now broken, illegible,or missing.
Two months after renewed promises, residents say the water quality hasn’t improved and damaged signage adds to their frustration.

City on high alert this Guy Fawkes

Incident reports in recent years suggest a downturn in the illegal discharge of fireworks and marauding mobs usually associated with Guy Fawkes, but the Safety and Security Directorate will be on high alert again this year to respond to public complaints

The City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) has recorded decreases in complaints related to the illegal sale and discharge of fireworks In 2024 the Fire and Rescue Service also did not respond to any incidents that were specifically linked to Guy Fawkes

"We’ve seen a marked downturn in the past two years of incidents reported to the City on Guy Fawkes Day," said Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith "We understand that there might well have been more incidents and that these were not reported, but we are encouraged nonetheless by the apparent decline ” In the first 20 days of October this year, the PECC recorded 45 incidents of the illegal discharge of fireworks, with more than half occurring over just four days, from the 17 October Mitchell's Plain and Bonteheuwel had the highest number of reports, with sporadic complaints in areas such as Heideveld, Macassar Village, Manenberg, Ocean View, Cravenby and Grassy Park

"The discharge of fireworks is allowed only with a permit," Smith said "So if you see anyone selling fireworks on the roadside or at corner shops, and you’re not sure they have a permit for it, please do report it immediately " . The PECC's number is 021 480 7700

Brandon grew up in Durban, where his passion for performing arts began early “I was always a dramatic and expressive child,” he laughs “I loved being in school plays and taking part in speech and drama festivals My parents saw how much I loved it, so they enrolled me in acting classes when I was 6, and that’s where it all started ”

By age 11 Brandon was already directing small productions and developing a deeper understanding of theatre “I used to watch performances at the Baxter Theatre and Sneddon Theatre,” he recalls “Seeing the emotion, the storytelling, the energy, I knew from the first time I stepped onto a stage that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life ”

RISINGTOTHETOP

Brandon’s journey to the New York stage began when he entered the Show Your Talent: South Africa national competition After earning three golds, three high golds, and several other trophies, he secured his place on Team South Africa for the international finals “The moment I found out I’d been selected was surreal,” he said

“It made me realise how far I’d come and how many people had helped me along the way ” He credits his parents for being his biggest supporters, along with his drama teacher, Joshua Wyngaard, and vocal coach, Vanessa Phillips, for his success His competition pieces showcased both his range and his passion For acting he performed The Glass Menagerie and Laughing Wild; two contrasting monologues that highlighted his versatility “I chose ‘Laughing Wild’ because it’s quirky and funny, while The Glass Menagerie is emotional and deeply moving I wanted to show the judges both sides of who I am as a performer ” For his vocal performances Brandon took on “Meadowlark” from The Baker’s Wife –a powerful, emotional song – and “Buenos Aires” from Evita, which he describes as “big, bold and diva-driven” “It was such a fun contrast,” he says “One song pulled at the heartstrings, and the other was pure performance energy!”

STANDINGOVATIONSANDSCHOLARSHIPS

Brandon’s performances earned him standing ovations, multiple awards, and international recognition “When they called my name for the Pinnacle Award, I was in shock! I was the youngest in my category, so it was really emotional It proved to me that age doesn’t define your ability to make an impact ” Among his proudest achievements is the scholarship to the New York Film Academy to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre However, the scholarship covers only 50% of his tuition, leaving him to raise funds for the remaining costs and living expenses Brandon and his coaches are already planning fundraising events

for 2026

THINKING OUT LOUD

Learning to embrace the speed of modern life

"I remembered reading that they were making sausages out of fish, and fish, no doubt, out of something different It gave me the feeling that I'd bitten into the modern world and discovered what it was really made of That's the way we're going nowadays Everything slick and streamlined, everything made out of something else "

This passage from George Orwell's novel Coming up for air has become a haunting metaphor to describe this glittery age we find ourselves racing to embrace and understand

First published in 1939 just before World War 2 and the birth of the atomic bomb, two terrifying phenomena that would alter life and our idea of safety and security forever And yet I find the novel still captures the unease and paranoia that technological and industrial innovation presents our society in 2025

A few years ago, we survived and emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic, where we witnessed hybrid work environments, government distrust, the rise of podcasts and dying theatres and record stores closing down

During this time the political world became more divided, with content creators sharing their ideologies towards their fanbases on social media and deepening the divide between liberals and conservatives to boost their followers

We saw YouTube become the new television and now we are bombarded with

WEAREBASKINGINTHE GOLDENAGEOFTECHNOLOGY ANDWITNESSINGTHE BREAKNECKSPEEDOF INFORMATIONANDEVER INCREASINGPOPULARITY OFSOCIALMEDIA.

unskippable ads and more spam calls than ever before

Cooped up in our homes while being forced to quarantine and social distance, these videos or "content" we consumed became an escape from a gloomy reality we were struggling to accept

You often hear people say they weren't the same person that entered the pandemic

All the while our cellphones, our apps, kept updating and improving

Now these devices are operating at unprecedented speeds, effortlessly processing oceans of data and completing tasks more efficiently

We are basking in the golden age of technology and witnessing the breakneck speed of information and ever increasing popularity of social media

Particularly, Instagram and the obsession of appearing cool and having an "aesthetic" and style that sets you apart from the rest and pretending to live as a celebrity

Like the word "fast food" means a quick, cheap and tasty meal, people can become irritated and impatient when this convenience doesn't fulfil its promise and they waited 20 minutes for their hamburger

And yet after they've exhausted their lungs, once they've received their meal they'll bite into the meat like some rabid hyaena, with little care to consider if the meat they re chewing is truly the "100% pure bred beef'' they paid for I think this is an apt way to describe why we should remember the importance of staying vigilant and distinguish between the truth and the lies being sold and packaged to us with colourful gift wrapping - KEANAN HARMSE

Kid’s

mental health declines as screen time skyrockets

As a practising psychologist I have had countless conversations with colleagues including psychologists, psychiatrists and general practitioners about the growing crisis in children’s mental health Again and again one issue rises to the top of every discussion: excessive screen time

Never in my life when I decided to study psychology did I imagine that one day I would speak about screen use 10 times a day Yet here we are It has become one of the most urgent and distressing topics in my consulting room

We now see children who spend more hours on screens than they do sleeping Some report being online for up to 19 hours a day These children often struggle to sleep, eat poorly and find real-world interaction confusing or overwhelming Their attention, emotions and sense of identity are shaped by a digital world that rewards comparison, instant gratification and performance

Many teenagers are now diagnosing themselves with conditions they have discovered on social media In a developmental phase defined by identity exploration it has become common to seek belonging through a diagnosis They are not being dramatic; they are trying to make sense of themselves in a world that feels overstimulated, disconnected and relentlessly demanding

Another serious concern is the sharp rise in autism spectrum diagnoses over the past few years Of course there are children who genuinely meet the diagnostic criteria and who need proper assessment and support But we are also seeing a pattern where children with extremely high screen exposure begin to show symptoms that resemble autistic traits: limited eye contact, flat affect, reduced reciprocal conversation, poor frustration tolerance and social withdrawal If you think about it, it makes sense

When a developing brain spends its formative years engaging mostly with screens rather than with people, social communication and emotional attunement will inevitably be affected This is not true autism but the functional outcome can look very similar It is heartbreaking to see how preventable some of this may be What is even more concerning is that screen overuse does not only create new problems but also worsens existing ones

Anxiety, depression, attention difficulties, irritability and social withdrawal all increase when a child’s nervous system is constantly flooded by stimulation that the human brain was never designed to handle This is not a normal activity for a developing mind It

is not natural for children to sit still for hours scrolling through content that hijacks their attention and emotions Our brains were built for movement touch conversation and human connection, not for the endless dopamine loop of screens Schools, without realising it, have become part of the problem Homework is posted on digital platforms Class notices are sent to learners phones Parents are directed to WhatsApp groups for updates What happened to the homework book? What happened to sending a note home or allowing a child to take responsibility by writing something down? Children should be allowed to disconnect when they leave school Home time should mean family time, a chance to rest, talk, play and simply be Yet the expectation to stay connected has blurred every boundary between school and home life

Of course, every parent also carries responsibility We cannot expect schools to carry this alone Families need to set boundaries for device use and decide when screens are put away so that rest, presence and connection can take priority again It is not easy, and many parents feel trapped in a system that demands digital participation but we still have a say in how we raise our children

I want to make a friendly but urgent request to all parents: start questioning this Talk to your schools Make appointments with the headmaster Ask whether homework and notices can once again be written in a book or sent directly to parents Ask if there are ways to reduce the expectation that children must be online after school hours We need to stand together and protect what truly matters

This is not about being anti-technology It is about restoring balance It is about helping our children develop the skills and the inner calm that screens have begun to erode: focus, empathy, curiosity, imagination, patience and rest

Our children’s mental health is paying the price for a system that has gone too far We, as adults, have the power to change it Let us not allow our children to one day look back and resent us for standing by while their childhoods disappeared behind a screen Let us South Africans be the change We do not have to wait in line for first-world countries to first make this drastic change We can be the ones who act now, who set the example, who put our children first

If we want a generation that is emotionally healthy curious and connected, we must give them back what technology has quietly taken away: their childhood CONCERNED PSYCHOLOGIST, Email

Take your cable ties with you

We often go for walks in the Sonstraal Heights area, and it is extremely concerning to see that when advertising boards are removed from poles or lamp posts, the cable ties or pieces of string are often left behind on the ground, or around the pole

During the past week, boards advertising the Dutch Reformed Church market of 8ste Laan, Boston, were removed from lamp poles, and the cable ties were left on the ground

Is it too much effort to remove the cable ties as well, rather than leaving them for someone else to pick up?

When a leash fails, everyone pays

The letter "Alle honde hoort aan leibande" of 22 October refers

My 10-month-old dog, Audie, a Whippet/Greyhound mix, is a friendly pet who plays well with others However, a few months ago, she and I were involved in a distressing incident when we were attacked by an aggressive Border Collie

The attacking dog was ostensibly "leashed", but the owner was using a long nylon strap that slipped from her grasp the moment the dog lunged This failure of equipment and control left me struggling to protect both myself and my dog

The incident resulted in a physical fracas where I had to take protective action, and the other dog's owner was injured in the attempt to regain control

Since this event, I have had to change my walking routes and carry protective items to ensure our safety This is an unacceptable situation for law-abiding dog owners simply trying to enjoy a walk

There is no doubt that all dogs ought to be leashed in public places, even trained dogs, and I support any such initiative KPS CUTHBERT, Edgemead

SAswimmermakeswaves

South African-born François Bonnici has always felt at home in the water Growing up in Cape Town, he was a surfer first, braving the cold Atlantic But when the waves were still, François discovered open water swimming. Since then, he’s taken on iconic swims – completing the crossing from Robben Island to Cape Town solo once and again as part of a relay Life later took him to Geneva, where Lake Geneva's still, glacial expanse replaced the waves he so loved It was there that François strengthened his love for open water swimming and, most recently, became part of a team that made history while raising vital funds for water safety in South Africa and Switzerland

Last month, François and five teammates achieved what no one had before: a twoway relay swim across Lake Geneva, swimming 144 kilometres over 50 hours and 37 minutes Starting at Château de Chillon near Montreux, the team swam day and night, contending with sudden storms, shifting currents, rain, and exhaustion

François Bonnici is flying the flag for the NSRI at Lake Geneva

“The first leg was glorious – sunshine and calm water,” François recalls

APERSONALMISSION

For François, that mission was deeply personal “Being a doctor, I saw quite a few cases of drowning, and being a surfer, I actually was involved in quite a few rescues,” he says

“It’s a very scary thing, and something so preventable ”

Drowning claims an estimated 300 000 lives worldwide every year For François, supporting the NSRI was a natural choice “The NSRI are one of the best

organisations in the world, identified by the World Health Organisation as really having effective programmes,” he explains “It’s something that’s certainly close to me, having the personal experiences ”

The relay was more than just a physical challenge It was an exercise in teamwork, trust, and friendship “With this team I’d go almost anywhere, to the ends of the earth – we would support each other,”

François says He adds that there are “many reasons” to be part of the swim this year “To do a world first challenge is such an exciting opportunity, and to raise funds for the NSRI ”

Together, the six swimmers – François, Alex Seeger (Germany), Dóra Sári (Hungary), Katie Glass (Canada), Kate Norton (UK), and Jonny Singh (UK) – not only conquered the lake but also exceeded their fundraising goal of CHF 10,000 (about R 220,000) Half of the money went to the NSRI, and half to Swiss organisations working in drowning prevention

“Todoaworldfirstchallengeissuch anexcitingopportunity,andtoraise fundsfortheNSRI.”

CHALLENGES

Looking back, François reflects on what drives him into cold, challenging waters time and again “My heart is always in the Atlantic Ocean,” he says with a smile “But since moving to Switzerland, exploring the lakes here has been extraordinary Swimming is something we all enjoy – and we hope everyone can also have the experience and skills to enjoy the water the way we do ” Through courage, endurance, and community, François and his team proved that ordinary people can do extraordinary things – and in the process, they’ve given others the chance to be safer in the water

Hawks probe Kleuterzone

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) last week announced that all the cases involving Kleuterzone Group are being centralised for investigation by the Hawks in the Western Cape, urging all individuals who invested in the company to come forward and assist with the ongoing probe

At least 30 alleged fraud cases have already been opened across the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, and Gauteng, and are currently under active investigation

Spokesperson for the Hawks Lt Col Christopher Singo says the office of the serious commercial crime unit of the Hawks in the Western Cape became inundated with several complaints from individuals who alleged that they had invested funds in the Kleuterzone Group of companies, which they suspected they were defrauded of by its founder and sole director, Anthonie Bougas

"Over 1000 people invested an estimated R550 million in more than 120 Kleuterzone schools nationally," says Singo Those who have been victims/investors are urged to contact the investigating officer, Lt Col Ronald van Niekerk on his cellphone number 071 481 3257 or email, wcdpci rvanniekerk@saps gov za Investors or victims who have already reported the matter to the police are requested to provide their case numbers and the name of the station where they reported and the assigned investigating officer

Acting provincial head, Brig Mushavhaduvha Ramovha, is assuring the public that these cases will be given the attention they deserve and bring the perpetrators to book

Last month,François and five teammates accomplished a two-way relay swim.

Film screening explores shared SA histories

Three short films interrogating South Africa’s colonial past and legacy of slavery will be screened on Friday 31 October at the Avalon Auditorium, Homecoming Centre, Cape Town.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa, in partnership with the District Six Museum, will host a special screening of three short films that explore South Africa’s colonial history through the lens of art, memory, and cultural resistance The screening will take place at the Avalon Auditorium, Homecoming Centre, Cape Town, from 18:00 to 20:15. Entry is free, but seating is limited and booking is essential.

The evening forms part of the Netherlands’ #cocreateIDENTITY programme, which supports South African cultural initiatives and Dutch-South African collaborations that address identity, heritage, and transformation.

FILMS

Each film offers a unique perspective on the country s layered past and its echoes in the present: . Whispers and Shouts (18 mins), directed by Elise Fernandez, documents the "CAPE X NL: Whispers and Shouts" exhibition at the Camissa Museum. This collaborative project between Dutch and South African partners engages with the legacy of Dutch slavery in the Cape through archival material, art, and public memory The film captures the exhibition’s resonance with local audiences and its transformation into a permanent installation at the Castle of Good Hope

. Wat was hie? (30 mins), a site-specific film directed and choreographed by Luke de Kock, retraces the erasure and resistance of indigenous San and Khoi peoples. Through embodied performance and poetic reflection, the film reclaims historical spaces impacted by slavery and colonial rule posing the haunting question: What was here?

. Fugitives (18 mins), directed by Philip du Plessis,

is a documentary produced by the Biography of an Uncharted People project at Stellenbosch University Using forensic artistry and archival records, the film reconstructs the likenesses of enslaved individuals who escaped before the abolition of slavery in 1838 The project gives visual identity to lives once rendered invisible by the historical record.

A post-screening Q&A session with the filmmakers and project collaborators will offer audiences an opportunity to engage with the creative and historical processes behind the works. Entrance is free but booking is essential. . RSVP via email to: kaa-rsvp@minbuza.nl
