JEFFREYS Bay will not hosta World Surf League (WSL) event in 2026 afterthe national Department of Sport,Arts and Culture failed to provide confirmed funding, forcing the prestigioussurfing competition to relocate to New Zealand.
The disappointing announcement was made by Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman, who cited insufficientfinancial backing as the primary reason for losing the internationalevent that has become synonymous with the coastal town’s tourism calendar.
“It is with regret that we announce the World Surf League willnot host an eventinJeffreys Bay in 2026,” said Bornman.
“The absence of aconfirmed funding commitment fromthe national Department of Sport, Recreation, Artsand Culture has led to this decision.”
Despite the municipality’scontinued support for the event, local funding alone proved inadequate for an international competition of this scale.
“DespiteKouga Municipality’s ongoing support, the municipal contributionalone is insufficient for an event of thismagnitude,” saidBornman.
The WSL has confirmed it will move this leg of the tour to New Zealand, where organisers have secured the necessary funding to host the event.
The loss represents asignificantblow to the local economy, with the WSL eventtraditionally bringing substantial tourism revenue and international exposure to Jeffreys Bay, one of South Africa’s premier surfing destinations.
However, Bornman remains hopeful about thefuture.
“Thisisdisappointing news, given the positive economic and tourism impact thatthe WSL event brings to our community. We remain optimistic that, with
the necessary support, the event will return to Jeffreys Bay in 2027,”said Bornman.
He further emphasised the municipality's commitment to economic growththrough major events.
“We will continue to prioritise growing our local economy through events like this and many others to come.”
In apress release, WSLstated that in order to maintain a 12-event CT formatthis season, Jeffreys Bay will not feature on the CT schedulefor 2026.
WSL CEO Ryan Crosby said, “Welove JBay and the communitythere, and we're really grateful tothem for welcoming us for so many years.”
“It’s undoubtedly one of the bestwaves in the world, and we will continue to exploreways to return in the future. That said, we have made the difficult decision topull JeffreysBay from the 2026 CT calendar. We didour very best to make J-Bay workin 2025, but the financial support isn’t there to make it viable this year.”
Crosby said that theirgoal is toset professional surfing up for long-term successand make sure the world’sbestsurfershave the platform tokeep advancing the sportfor many years.
“Achieving this goal requires making decisions that prioritise the health of the overall business,”said Crosby.
Commenting on the tourism impact, Jeffreys Bay Tourism chairman, Deon Freemantle, said he was distraught by the WSL’s decision, as it will directly affect the community and local businesses.
“The surffestival in Julyisa huge financial injection with both national and international tourists visiting the town,” said Freemantle.
He said the cancellation has created asignificant void, and JBay Tourismplans to meet with Kouga Municipalitysoon to explore how they can address the
shortfall.
While it remains unclear if the surf festival will continue without the WSLevent, Freemantle said that if the festival proceeds, they will havetodevelop alternative attractions fortourists.
“It is ahuge benefit to host the surf festival,” saidFreemantle.
Dr Vicky Knoetze, Democratic Alliance member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature, said that the loss of the World Surf League (WSL)event from JeffreysBay in 2026 is aserious blow to the Eastern Cape economy, stripping the province of aflagship tourism platform and placing thousands of livelihoods at risk.
She said thatthe DA will raise this matter formally in the Eastern CapeLegislature to seek clarity on why no funding commitment was secured, what efforts were made to retain the event, and what immediate steps will be taken to mitigate the economic damage.
Knoetze said that the DA will also drivethe issue of creating acoordinated provincial tourism recoveryplan to supportaffected businesses and workers and to ensurethat JeffreysBay is properly positioned to reclaim the WSL in 2027.
She further said thatOscar Mabuyane, Premier of the Eastern Cape, has repeatedly stated that job creation and inclusive economic growth are top provincial priorities, even setting ambitious targets to increase employment across the province.
“Thisloss, which generates millions of rand in economic activity and supports thousandsof jobs, demandsaction that matches these commitments,” said Knoetze.
She said thatMabuyane must urgently engage the national government, convene affected stakeholders, and ensure that provincial economicdevelopment plans areadapted to protect businesses and workers impacted by this funding failure.
Knoetze said that he must also account for thelack of provincial support, as commitments from the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agencyfailedtomaterialise.
“Previous WSLeventshave injected tens of millionsofrand into the local economy, supporting accommodation providers, restaurants, informal traders, transport operators, andseasonal tourism workers.
“Thousands of visitors travelled to Jeffreys Bayeach year for the competition, providing vital income for small businesses and families acrossKouga and the widerEastern Cape,” said Knoetze
She said that major international sportingeventsplay acritical role in attracting visitors, stimulating local economies, and showcasing theEastern Cape on the globalstage
“Behind every cancelledbooking and every quiet shopfloor is afamily whoseincome depended on thisevent.Government inaction should notbepaidfor by ordinary residents,” said Knoetze
The Kouga Business Forum (KBF) has expresseddeep disappointment at thecancellation of the WSL event in JeffreysBay this year.
Lieb Swiegers, chairman of KBF, said this decisionisa significant setback for Kougaand JeffreysBay, whichhave long relied on the event as avital economic andmarketing boost during thetraditionally slower winter season.
He said theWSL event hashistorically providedasubstantial injection into thelocal economy, sustaining businesses across hospitality, retail, tourism and services during aperiodwhen activity is otherwise subdued
“The cancellation will negatively affect awidespectrum of businesses, from restaurants and shops to guesthouses, property salesand transportproviders, all of whom benefit directly from the influxofvisitors,” said
Swiegers.
Beyondthe immediate financial impact, he said theWSL has served as apowerful international marketingplatform for JeffreysBay andSouthAfrica
“The global exposure generated by theevent hasconsistentlyelevatedJeffreysBay’sprofile as a premier surf destination, attracting both tourists andinvestors from around theworld,” said Swiegers.
According to Jaco Bothma, franchiseeofPam Golding Properties andaKBF member, the cancellation will have aparticularly negative impact on thereal estate sector.
He said short-term rentals, whichare in highdemandduring theevent for televisioncrews, event coordinators, professional surfers andvisitors, will suffer themostimmediate losses.
“Inpastyears, theevent drew local visitors from Cape Town andKwaZulu-Natal, as well as international enthusiastsfrom theUnited Kingdom, France, Norway, Switzerland andthe USA,” said Bothma.
“The 2025 event even generated enquiries on high-end properties from foreignbuyers, opportunitiesthatwill notmaterialisethis year.”
Swiegers said that from theinformation available to them,it is clear that bringing back this high-profile event to Jeffreys Baywill require serious national interventionand substantial subsidies.
The KBF emphasises that the business community, together with event organisers, must do everything possible to ensure that this world-classevent returns to Jeffreys Bay.
“The WSLisnot only asporting highlight butacornerstone of thetown’s economicresilience andinternational reputation.
“Its reinstatement is essential for theprosperityoflocal businesses andthe continued growth of Jeffreys Bayasaglobal surf capital,” said Swiegers.

KAREEDOUW is facing the possibilityof being declared awater disasterareaasresidents endureprolonged water shortages lasting days at atime, with local leaders and officials offering differing perspectiveson whether the crisis stems frominfrastructure failures or drought conditions affecting the broaderSarah Baartman District region
Henni Britz, Democratic Alliance Kou-Kamma Constituency Leader, said thatKareedouw is facing severe water restrictionsand the loomingpossibility of being declareda water disaster area.
He alleges that since December2025, residentshave been repeatedly left without waterintheir homes for days at atime, placing an unbearable strain on theirdaily lives.
Britz said that he recently met with local community membersand, thereafter, with the Municipal Managertoaddressthe crisis
He said thatduring the meeting withthe Municipal Manager, it wasallegedly highlighted that many of Kareedouw’s water challengesare the result of the municipality’s broken water pumps, as well as dysfunctional and vandalised boreholes that have not been properly maintainedfor years.
“The situation became so critical thatthe community took matters into its own hands and sent the municipality’s twowaterpumps for repairs. Onlyone could berepaired andwas reinstalled, providing limited but much-needed relief. The municipalityundertook to pay forthe repaired water pump, but payment has yet to be made,” said Britz. He alleges that strict water restrictions are expected to be imposed as the first of many
steps toward having Kou-Kamma declared a water disaster area.
Britzsaid that the Municipal Manager allegedly admitted that the municipality is facing severe fundinglimitations and lacks the funds to properlyaddress the water crisis.
“Declaring the area awater disaster and securing funding from the national government appears to be hisonly proposed longtermsolution. In the meantime, residents are left to suffer the consequences of the municipality’s failures,” said Britz.
He alleges that municipal officials do not have maps showing the location of water pipelinesleadingtothe town, and thereis no reliable information on borehole capacities or accurate meter readings to determine actualwater consumption.
Furthermore, Britz claims that one water pump is incorrectly configured, creating a loop that pumps water back into afeeding dam insteadoftothe reservoir
He said that incorrect water billing has beenongoing for yearswithout resolution.
Britz alleges that that Kou-Kamma has undertaken to update itswater infrastructure data.
As soon as more technical datahas been collected, Britz said he plans to approach the officeofthe Minister of Water and Sanitation for urgent intervention.
Kareedouw resident, Andile Williams, said that the ongoing water shortages in Kou-Kamma, particularly in Kareedouw, remain deeply concerning.
He said that residents continue to experience frequent and prolonged disruptions affecting households, schools, businesses and health services.
Of further concern is the apparent lack of
JBAYAnimal Rescue Sanctuary, which sterilises at least 80 animals every month in the Kouga region, is locat

communication from the Public Participation Office.
“It is alleged that the responsibleofficer has cited beingonstandby during the festive season, leavingcommunities without timely updates,” saidWilliams.
While these challenges persist, hehas acknowledged and commended the hard work of water truck driverMasixole Gcukumana and hisassistant Mzwandile Twalo, who haveworked tirelesslytosupport affected areas.
Williams further expressed his appreciation for the commitment of Water and Sanitation Technician, Olwethu Mapheelle, who consistentlymakes himself available whenever communities arewithout water.
However, hesaid that appreciation for individual efforts cannot replace the urgent need for improvedcoordination, accountability and aclear action plan fromthe municipality.
“Water is abasic right, and residentsdeserve reliable access and transparent communication,” said Williams.
Kou-Kamma Executive Mayor Sam Vuso saidthat allegations madebythe Democratic Alliance about the current water crisis being man-made are misleading and fail to account for the broaderrealities affecting the region.
“It is common cause that the entire Sarah Baartman District Municipality is experiencingseverewater shortages, primarily as a result of prolonged droughtconditions,” said Vuso.
“In response, the District Municipalityis actively coordinating and mobilising resources to assist all affected local municipalities, including Kou-Kamma LocalMunicipality.”
Vuso saidthat these challenges are further
compounded by high levels of vandalism and theft, including the destruction of infrastructureand theft of pumps and electrical cables. Despite thesesetbacks, he said that the municipality continues to take all reasonable steps to secure itsassetswhile simultaneously procuring the necessary equipment to ensure the continued provision of water
“Where infrastructure maintenance or unforeseen disruptions occur, contingency measures are implemented to provide relief water to affected communities,”said Vuso He said that it is therefore disingenuous and irresponsiblefor the DA to allege that the municipality is the cause of the water crisis currently being experienced.
Vuso said that such claims undermine collective efforts required to address acrisis that demands cooperation, accountability, and responsibleleadership.
“The Kou-Kamma Local Municipalityremains fully committed to providing water to itscommunities and will continue to work tirelessly, together with the District Municipalityand other stakeholders, to mitigate the impact of the water shortages and ensure that residentsreceive the necessary support during thischallenging period,”said Vuso Kou-Kamma Municipal spokesperson, NomavaSiqoko, said the region is currently experiencing adrought, and the municipality has therefore conducted various community awareness sessions throughout the festive season to encourage residentstosave water
“We did everything necessary to inform residentsabout the current drought and hosted information sessions on KougaFMthis past festive season,” said Siqoko.
To assist with the water outages, she said that the municipality has also carted water

NOLUTHANDO Bans, a2025 Matriclearner at JeffreysBay Comprehensive High School, has brought pride to her community after being recognised as the top learner in Kouga, achieving second position in the SarahBaartmanDistrict and becoming one of theEastern Cape's topachievers.
The Eastern Cape celebratedits top-performing Matriclearners on 13 Januaryatthe 2025 Matric Achievers Awardceremony held at theEast London ICC, with the provincerecordingan84.2% Matric pass rate.
At the ceremony,Bans received acertificate indicating her secondposition in the Sarah BaartmanDistrict, along with atrophy, laptop, cellphone, suitcase and laptopbag
She obtained distinctionsinTourism, isiXhosa, and Life Orientation, andachieved 79% in allother subjects
Bans said that she was extremely excited whenshe received confirmationofher results because it was her goal for the year.
She said thatshe has always strived to obtain high marks, and she therefore worked hard towards her goals.
“I did expect remarkable results because when Ibegan Matric, my goal wastoreach thenational level, but it was exciting to reach the provinciallevel,” said Bans
The achievement holdsspecialsignificance as shecomes fromhumble beginnings.
Banssaid she felt immense pride representing the Kouga region and theSarah Baartman District
Shedescribed her journey from the dusty streets of Jeffreys Bay’sinformal settlements to meeting Eastern Cape Department of Edu-

cation MEC Fundile Gade at the2025 Matric AchieversAward ceremony at theEast LondonICC as “the best dayofmylife.”
Hermotivation throughout theyearwas driven by herdetermination to become the first family member to completehigh school.
“The motivation that kept me goingwas the thought that in my family, no one has ever
reached Grade12. Bear in mind,I am the sixth-born out of eight children,” said Bans.
“I wanted to break that generational curse and be thefirst matriculant in my family to pass with high marks.”
Regardingher study approach, Bans said that she did nothave aspecific study strategy since shehad sevensubjects that required dif-
ferent studytechniques.
However, she said that she mastered consistency
“I madesure nothing came between me and my books, especially during exams,” said Bans.
Looking ahead, she has been accepted by theUniversityofJohannesburg forEducation and theUniversityofthe Free State for Law; however, she has yettodecidewhich universityshe will attend since she is passionate about both fields
Forthe Matric class of 2026, Bans offered practical advice.
She advised learners to do their best in their studies and highlighted theimportance of timemanagement
Bans also encouraged learners to set ambitious goalsfor themselves to strive towards.
“The Grade 12 curriculum is aload of work and can be stressful if youcannot manage timeappropriately,” said Bans.
She also addressed challenges that learners may face butencouraged them to remain focused
“Many Grade 12 learners are exposed to bullying and other frustrating situations, but I want to urge them not to allowthose things to define them. Instead, they must rise above their circumstances. They must not be afraid to ask forhelp, attend extra classes, and form studygroupsofnomore than four people,” said Bans.
Reflecting on her achievement,Bans said that attending theMatric Achievers Award ceremony heldatthe East London ICC wasan answered prayer.
“I am reaping what Ihad planted, and I experienced everything that Ihad dreamt of since Istarted Grade 12,” said Bans.
