Environmentalist group,

Save a Fishie is calling for a ban on plastic lollipop sticks after thousands were discovered over the past few months during beach cleanups "Plastic pollution continues to plague Cape Town’s beaches, with one small yet persistent item now in the spotlight: plastic lollipop sticks," says Zoë Prinsloo, founder of Save a Fishie

Save a Fishie has launched a campaign demanding a ban on these products, citing their

dangers to marine life, seabirds, and ecosystems

PETITIONFORCHANGE

Save a Fishie has launched a petition urging urgent action to ban plastic-stemmed lollipops in South Africa

The campaign emphasises that this small shift could mark a significant victory in reducing coastal pollution

“This is one of the easiest environmental victories we can win,” Prinsloo stresses “If we can’t ban plastic lollipop sticks when safe alternatives are already available how can we

litters the shoreline Among bottle caps, polystyrene, and straws, lollipop sticks are a stubborn and recurring find

expect to address bigger plastic challenges?”

AFAMILIARSIGHTONLOCALBEACHES

From Melkbosstrand and Bloubergstrand to Sunset Beach and Milnerton, residents and clean-up volunteers know the scene all too well: after heavy rains or storms, plastic debris

Over the years, TygerBurger has reported extensively on how these items, flushed through stormwater drains and rivers, wash ashore in large numbers after winter downpours While unsightly, the danger goes far deeper than appearance posing real threats to ocean health

“Plastic lollipop sticks are one of the most common items we collect during clean-ups,” says Prinsloo

“They don’t break down, they

end up in the food chain, and they’re completely unnecessary because safer alternatives already exist ”

THEHIDDENDANGERSOF PLASTICSTICKS

These small plastic stems, often overlooked, are far from harmless, Prinsloo says Rigid and sharp, they can injure or choke seabirds and marine animals Over time, they fragment into microplastics that enter the food web, potentially affecting human health as well

“Every stick we find is another reminder of how deep the plastic crisis has become,” Prinsloo says

“If we cannot phase out such a simple, replaceable product, then what hope do we have for tackling the larger plastic problem?”

Unlike many environmental challenges that require new innovations or major investment, this issue has an immediate fix: paper lollipop sticks Widely available and just as effective for holding sweets, paper options are biodegradable and far less harmful

“There is absolutely no reason for plastic sticks to still be on our shelves,” Prinsloo explains “Paper sticks work perfectly, they’re affordable, and they don’t destroy the environment ”

WHONEEDSTOACT?

Save a Fishie’s campaign identifies clear responsibilities for change:

.Manufacturers: Stop producing plasticstemmed lollipops and commit to paperbased alternatives

.Retailers: Remove plastic versions from shelves and offer only sustainable choices

.Parents, Schools, and Youth Groups: Refuse to buy or distribute plasticstemmed lollipops at events, fundraisers, or as treats

.Government: Enforce legislation banning the manufacture and sale of

plastic sticks, in line with global trends phasing out single-use plastics

“Plastic pollution is choking our oceans If we want to protect our beaches, wildlife, and future generations, we need to cut this problem off at the source,” Prinsloo says

LESSONSFROMLOCALCLEAN-UPS

Beach cleanup groups often stress that the litter washing up after storms reflects what is flowing into rivers and stormwater systems daily Once in the sea, these plastics circulate indefinitely

“Every time it rains, we brace ourselves for the waste that will end up on our beaches,” Prinsloo noted “From Milnerton Lagoon right up to Melkbosstrand, plastic lollipop sticks are always among the first items we pick up ”

TygerBurger has previously covered how these items, particularly around Sunset Beach and Bloubergstrand, overwhelm volunteers after storm surges evidence of how entrenched the issue has become South Africa’s beaches are a source of pride, recreation, and tourism

They are also vital habitats for marine life Campaigners argue that allowing unnecessary plastic to continue polluting these spaces undermines both environmental health and community well-being

As Prinsloo concluded: “Together, we can stop this source of litter at its root ” . Go to https://chng.it/YFb6hgHgMT to sign the petition

Alarge-scale search operation was launched at Bloubergstrand Beach

Sunday afternoon after an unidentified man went missing in the surf near Dolphin Beach Hotel Despite an extensive sea, air, and shoreline effort, he has not yet been found.

The duty crew of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Melkbosstrand were activated following eyewitness reports of a man in difficulty in the water Rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene, while additional crews launched the rescue craft Rotary’s Gift and Rescue 18 Alpha from the station

Emergency services including the City of Cape Town’s Water Rescue Network, Western Cape EMS, Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, the police, Community Medics, ER24, law enforcement, and Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services joined the operation

An EMS Drone Rescue Unit conducted aerial sweeps, while three rescue boats searched the surf zone and beyond Freedive search efforts were also carried out by rescue swimmers

Despite the extensive efforts, no sign of the man has been found

He is believed to be a black male, wearing shorts and a pink cap, who disappeared after getting into difficulty in the surf zone

Police divers from the Water Policing and Diving Services are expected to continue search efforts in the coming days

For years residents of Ward 113 (includes the areas of Table View, Bloubergstrand, Parklands, and Dolphin Beach) have voiced growing frustration over vagrants occupying the beachfront and surrounding public spaces, where makeshift shelters have become a visible and persistent issue What was once a place for families, joggers and visitors has too often been overshadowed by concerns around safety, hygiene and accessibility

In response, Ward 113 last week carried out a comprehensive joint operation to restore order and cleanliness to key areas

The initiative, led in partnership with the City’s Displaced Persons Unit (DPU), law enforcement, the City’s Solid Waste, and the Community Police Forum (CPF), with support from sub-council manager

Roxanne Moses and sub-council chair

Phindile Maxiti, targeted Birkenhead Road, Blaauwberg, the Old Tourist Centre and the beachfront, where public complaints have been on the rise

The local ward councillor Sue van der Linde said the coordinated effort showed meaningful progress and addressed longstanding concerns from the community

The operation focused on Birkenhead Road, Blaauwberg, the Old Tourist Centre and the beachfront, areas with the presence of rough sleepers and where makeshift camps had grown increasingly visible

Van der Linde welcomed the results, noting residents had long raised concerns about public spaces being overtaken

HOWRESIDENTSCANHELP

Van der Linde stressed that operations alone cannot keep Ward 113 clean and safe She urged residents to play their part by:

. Reporting rough sleepers via the City Emergency Line: 021 480 7700

. Disposing responsibly at local dumps rather than leaving items on sidewalks

. Donating clothing, bedding, or goods to St Luke’s Hospice Shop (248 Blaauwberg Road) or TLC Outreach Projects (18 Pentz Drive)

. Supporting shelters instead of giving money or food directly on the streets

. Volunteering for beach clean-ups or local beautification projects

“Please don’t try to move people on your own,” Van der Linde warned “This must be handled by trained officials for everyone’s safety ”

Van der Linde and Jonathan Mills were working to secure property for a dedicated shelter and skills programme, aimed at long-term rehabilitation and reintegration

Work on the multi-million-rand

Bayside Canal upgrade is set to resume this October after nearly a year-long suspension caused by a contractual dispute with the appointed contractor

The project, which aims to improve water quality within Rietvlei and its surrounding catchment, was halted in November 2024 when approximately 55% of the work had been completed Following due legal processes the matter was formally resolved in June 2025, paving the way for construction to continue once the rainy season is over Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for Water and Sanitation, welcomed the development, stressing the importance of the upgrade for both the environment and local communities “It’s crucial that work on this upgrade can now progress,

WORK HALTED BY LEGAL DISPUTE TO PROCEED

as this is one of the City’s key investments to improve water quality within Rietvlei and its surrounds As development within the catchment has grown there is a need to make improvements to the Bayside Canal to enable it to handle increased stormwater flows during peak periods and tackle litter and pollution entering stormwater channels into Rietvlei ”

When work resumes in October construction will focus on the stormwater canal leading to the primary sedimentation ponds, as well as the bypass canal from the secondary treatment channel to Rietvlei

ALONG-AWAITEDUPGRADE

The Bayside Canal upgrade has been the subject of ongoing community interest and concern, with several articles previously published by TygerBurger highlighting

both the environmental impact of pollution in Rietvlei and residents’ frustration over the slow progress of the project In past reports residents voiced alarm over litter, plastic waste and untreated stormwater ending up in the wetlands, a key biodiversity area and popular recreational site

The project was originally welcomed as a long-term solution to those concerns, but the suspension in 2024 left many wondering whether it would ever be completed The City’s confirmation that work will now resume offers reassurance

that the promises made to the Table View community, and to Rietvlei itself, are finally back on track

LOOKINGAHEAD

The City has not yet provided a revised completion date for the project, but officials remain confident that once finished, the upgraded system will reduce pollution, improve stormwater management, and protect Rietvlei’s delicate ecosystem

“This project is a vital step in safeguarding our natural environment while ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with development,” Badroodien added

THINKING OUT LOUD

How peaceful would we be if we loved others?

Love your neighbour as you love yourself

Most Christians would know that this is a well-known commandment found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible

It compels us to treat others with the same level of care, respect, and kindness that we naturally extend to ourselves

This is a sharp contrast to the reality faced in our beloved country today

Whenever you are watching the news or listening to the radio you need to mentally prepare yourself for the worst All we hear is death, rape, murder, violence and other heinous crimes

The Cape Flats is currently bleeding So many senseless killings Families ripped apart

This begs the question then, is this showing love?

Once again, we have political leaders trying to paint a colourful picture, claiming that police have matters under control And that matters are not as bad as they look

If this is the case, why is our president not calling a family meeting to tell us what steps are being taken to stem the killings?

I fail to understand why, even during a crisis such as this, inequality is still rife

On Tuesday 19 August, the parliamentary police portfolio committee chair, Ian Cameron, and two members of parliament came under attack in an attempted hijacking incident in Philippi Within 24 hours, two alleged suspects were apprehended for the crime Police worked throughout the night to catch the criminals All available resources were deployed to apprehend the perpetrators

..
DURING TIMES OF ADVERSITY, IT IS WISE TO NOTE THAT NOT EVERYONE OR EVERYTHING REQUIRES YOUR REACTION OR RESPONSE.

A total of 24 hours, that's all it took to get the perpetrators Yet, hijackings are a lived reality for many Capetonians

Some rape survivors are still awaiting the police to arrest the culprits Some murderers are still roaming the streets

These MPs were not told that there are no police vehicles available They were not turned away and told to provide proof of the incident They were not made to wait for hours or even treated like the perpetrator

This is the service some ordinary South Africans are met with when they set foot at some police stations

I am in no way trying to downplay what these MPs experienced It is horrific, and no one should have to go through that Isn't it time that the police and those in leadership positions sit around the table, admit that they have failed in their mandate and get back to the drawing board?

How many more mass murders should be reported on? How many more communities should live in fear?

Instead of spending on projects that never come to fruition, create more job opportunities Make education more affordable so that young people can obtain degrees and become employable Invest in educational institutions

As we live in hope that the powers that be wake up soon and act Let us start by ourselves Practice more patience and tolerance with one another

How peaceful this nation would be if we obeyed the commandment to love our neighbour as we love yourself?
