South Africa has taken a major step towards resolving its antivenom crisis, with the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) announcing the release of the first newly-produced batch of snake antivenom after more than a year of critically-low supplies Antivenom reserves have been depleted since mid-2024, with the South African Vaccine Producers (SAVP) confirming in October that it was unable to manufacture any doses The shortage stemmed from electricity supply challenges and necessary infrastructure upgrades at the SAVP facility South Africa’s sole antivenom producer
The NHLS restarted production in early September and has since produced 435 units of polyvalent antivenom, which is effective against multiple snake toxins This first batch marks a positive shift after months of strained emergency care resources
WHYANTIVENOMMATTERS
Producing antivenom is a highly specialised, time-intensive process that requires meticulous quality control to ensure the safety and efficacy of every vial According to the African Snakebite Institute (ASI), South Africa records around 4 000 snakebites each year, leading to approximately 900 hospitalisations Only about 3% of victims require antivenom but for those who do, it is often lifesaving Without access to antivenom, severe envenomation can rapidly result in organ failure or death, making reliable supply crucial for both rural and urban healthcare facilities
As temperatures rise, the country enters peak snake season a time when encounters with snakes become far more common Warmer weather draws snakes out to hunt, bask and search for water, increasing the likelihood of crossings with hikers, gardeners and residents in suburban areas Experts urge the public

“These beautiful creatures have been brutally killed, their shells broken open and discarded, and their internal organs and flesh removed,” he said “Such acts show a complete disregard for life and the natural environment we are working so hard to protect ”
It is suspected two men had entered the reserve earlier that morning under the guise of legitimate visitors They reportedly paid the standard fee for fishing and were seen carrying a fishing rod, possibly as cover for illegal activities
Photographic evidence and video footage of the suspects’ vehicle have since been handed to the local police, CapeNature and the SPCA as part of the investigation
The case was reported to Table View police, and the City said it would cooperate fully with law enforcement, to ensure the perpetrators are prosecuted Reserve staff have increased patrols in the protected area, particularly near access points and popular fishing zones
“This kind of cruelty has no place in our city,” said Andrews “We are appealing to the public to be vigilant Community cooperation is essential in stopping poaching and protecting our biodiversity ”
ECOLOGICALIMPACT
The Angulate Tortoise (Chersina angulata) is one of the most recognisable and resilient species found along the Cape’s coastal ecosystems These slowmoving reptiles can live for decades and play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of the area Environmentalists say the mass killing of 19 in one go underscores the ongoing threat of wildlife poaching in urban
WARMER WEATHER DRAWS SNAKES OUT TO HUNT, BASK AND SEARCH FOR WATER
to stay alert, keep pets close, and avoid attempting to handle or kill snakes, as most bites occur when people try to intervene With more sightings expected in the months ahead, awareness and calm responses remain key to preventing dangerous encounters
WHATWILLBEPRODUCEDANDWHEREIT’S GOING
The NHLS confirmed that production will extend beyond snake antivenom alone Future batches will include polyvalent antivenom, boomslang-specific antivenom, spider antivenom and scorpion antivenom
In collaboration with provincial health departments, the NHLS is prioritising fair distribution to clinics and hospitals in high-risk, snakebite-prone regions
This coordinated effort aims to stabilise supply chains and ensure timely access for emergency medical teams
. For any medical emergency involving venomous bites or stings, the public is urged to call 10177 or head to the nearest healthcare facility immediately
conservation areas A wildlife ecologist said: “This massacre is devastating; tortoises are slow breeders, and losing 19 at once can severely impact a small population It’s not just the animals that suffer; the entire ecosystem feels the loss ” Leila Petersen, a conservation activist, said: “Poaching is often driven by ignorance or desperation We need more community education because every creature plays a role in nature’s balance ” Said a Friends of Table Bay Nature Reserve: “The reserve is meant to be a sanctuary, not a hunting ground We hope the perpetrators are caught and this tragedy prompts tighter protection ”

Afierce warehouse fire in Montague Gardens on Thursday 13 November nearly escalated into a large-scale industrial catastrophe, but swift action by City firefighters halted the blaze before it could spread to neighbouring factories Multiple fire engines, water tankers and an aerial platform were dispatched after a distress call reported a factory fire in the busy industrial area City Mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith praised the crews for their rapid and coordinated response “Our firefighters knew they had to get on top of things quickly Their actions prevented what would have been a devastating economic setback for the area ”
FASTRESPONSESTOPSFIREFROMSPREADING
When the first firefighting crews arrived they found a warehouse “well alight”, with flames towering behind high structural walls and neighbouring businesses directly at risk Firefighters immediately began their attack while calling for additional resources, including water tankers and one of the City’s specialised aerial platform trucks
After the aerial platform arrived firefighters were lifted above the burning structure Thousands of litres of water were blasted into the blaze using the powerful mounted turret, helping to contain the fire from above At the same time teams attacked the flames from six different sides at ground level Smith said the combined approach was critical “Having the capacity to fight from both the ground and the sky gives us an enormous advantage in situations such

as these It’s exactly why our continual investment in specialised fire equipment matters ”
OVERNIGHTBATTLE
Despite the scale of the blaze firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to any neighbouring factories Crews worked throughout the night, continuing dampening-down operations until first light to prevent flare-ups
According to Smith the stakes were high
“The economic impact of losing a factory goes far beyond the immediate damage Jobs, livelihoods and long-term stability are all at risk Keeping those businesses safe helps keep Cape Town working ” He added that the City’s focus on ensuring adequate fire engines, water tankers and advanced tools like aerial platforms has been crucial to protecting the local economy “Our investments in fire and rescue directly support Cape Town’s position as the metro with the lowest unemployment rate in the country ”
BUSINESSOWNERSPRAISEFIREFIGHTERS
Several business owners in the area expressed relief and gratitude after firefighters stopped the fire from engulfing nearby properties
“We honestly thought we were going to lose everything,” said Mark Cummings, who owns a neighbouring warehouse “The firefighters arrived fast and fought like champions If that fire had spread just a few metres more, my workshop would be gone Their teamwork saved our
livelihoods ”
“The aerial platform was incredible to watch in action,” said Herman Pieters, whose business is nearby “Without it I think the whole block would have been wiped out ”
The City’s Fire and Rescue Service continued to monitor the site for any flareups last week while investigators assessed the cause of the blaze

Melkbosstrand residents have finally regained access to vital social grants thanks to a collaborative drive led by the local police, the Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum, and Home Affairs, which brought mobile ID units directly to the community
Over the past week, the Melkbosstrand police, in partnership with the Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum and the Department of Home Affairs, worked together to help residents obtain IDs a vital step in allowing many to access their South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grants and other essential services
According to the Melkbosstrand Community Police Forum (CPF) the initiative was born from community feedback highlighting that several residents, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, were struggling to collect their social grants because they did not have valid IDs
In response, the police and the Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum reached out to Home Affairs, who swiftly deployed two mobile offices to the area Over a two-day period, nearly 220 residents were assisted with new or replacement ID applications
an outcome that has made a tangible difference in the lives of many
COMMUNITYSERVICE
Trevor Courtney, chair of the Melkbosstrand CPF, praised the initiative, describing it as “an inspiring example of proactive community service and interdepartmental cooperation”
“We extend our utmost gratitude to Melkbosstrand police and the Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum for their outstanding initiative in addressing a pressing issue affecting our community,”
Courtney said
“Through their collaboration with Home Affairs, hundreds of residents many of whom were previously unable to access their rightful Sassa grants have now been empowered to do so This initiative has also benefited our youth, with several students taking the opportunity to obtain their first IDs ”
Courtney also expressed appreciation to members of the HumanityHeal Foundation, who stepped in to assist residents without bank accounts by offering the use of their cards to facilitate grant payments
“Their kindness ensured that no one was left behind,” he added
“This is what community spirit looks like people coming together to help one another in practical, meaningful ways ”
COMMUNITYUPLIFTMENTINACTION
The initiative, held at a local venue in Melkbosstrand, saw long queues of residents patiently waiting to be assisted by Home Affairs staff
Many expressed relief and gratitude for finally being able to take this crucial administrative step
Local organisations have hailed the effort as an example of what can be achieved when law enforcement, faith-based groups, and government departments work hand-in-hand
The CPF said it hopes to build on
Abandonedvehicles markedforremoval
City metro officers have begun cracking down on abandoned and broken-down vehicles across Phoenix, Jo Slovo and Milnerton Ridge

He said: “Our new metro officers have commenced the process of marking abandoned vehicles with warnings of

‘OuSes’shortfilmhitsbigscreen
South Africa's big-screen scene is about to get a jolt of raw authenticity with Ou Ses: Elke Move Tel the latest short film from writer, actor and filmmaker Enrico Hartzenberg from Sarepta.
The film introduces two new actors, Wayde Solomons (21) and Yulbritte Smith (33), whose performances bring a fresh dimension to a story that blends grit, heart and humanity
"Forget the usual crime stories," said Hartzenberg, founder of Hartzenberg Films. "Ou Ses tells a story of courage,

legacy and the redemptive power of love I wanted to show that there's so much more to our communities than the headlines there's resilience, laughter and dreams that refuse to die "
The film will premiere nationwide on Thursday 27 November and Friday 28 November as part of the "Heart & Hustle Anthology" alongside three other Hartzenberg Film short films at selected
Ster-Kinekor cinemas.
Hartzenberg described the agreement with Ster-Kinekor as a landmark collaboration and one of his most ambitious undertakings yet much more than a personal milestone
"This exhibition agreement isn't just a win for Ou Ses: Elke Move Tel or 'Heart & Hustle'," he said. "It's a powerful affirmation that our stories – urgent, emotional, and deeply rooted in the South African experience – deserve to be seen on the big screen."
Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer of Ster-Kinekor, said they are thrilled to support emerging talent "Screening local films in cinema is vital to keep the culture of cinema-going alive in South Africa. We're proud to play a role in showcasing stories that reflect the richness and complexity of our communities "
RISINGSTARS
Ou Ses marks an important breakthrough for both Solomons and Smith. Solomons, a young actor, voice-over artist, and broadcaster from Eerste River, already has early credits on Skemergrond,Suidooster Wyfie and Coby Phoenix Rise The 21-year-old said joining Ou Ses felt "like stepping into my purpose".
Smith, a performer from Belhar's Chestnut Place, turned personal setbacks into fuel for her craft After a dance injury paused her career, she completed a master's-level theatre programme at Jacomus, actor Dann-Jacques Mouton's drama school. Soon
after, Hartzenberg invited her to join Ou Ses without an audition. "After years of trying this felt like God making a way," said Smith.
To Hartzenberg Films, Ou Ses isn't just a short film, it's a statement "By investing in under-represented and emerging voices, Hartzenberg Films wants to expand the lens of South African storytelling and make space for new perspectives," said Hartzenberg."I'm thrilled to give audiences a fresh perspective on our stories, and even more excited to showcase the raw talent bubbling up from our communities."
Set on the Cape Flats, the film follows Charles, a man returning home after serving time for a crime he didn't commit only to find his family home taken over by the very man who betrayed him. The "Heart & Hustle Anthology" also includes the screening of: Sister Dinges a grief-fuelled revenge story told through a queer lens; After Quiet a reflective exploration of silence, memory, and healing; and Mr Isaacs a powerful narrative examining masculinity and generational trauma
Collectively, the films embody the dual spirit of "Heart & Hustle". "Heart reflects the emotional depth and humanity that ground each story," said Hartzenberg, "while hustle shows the resilience, drive and determination to rise above adversity."
The anthology will be screened at selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas nationwide from Thursday 27 November until Sunday 7 December Hartzenberg will host a meet-and-greet session at the screening at the V&A Waterfront on 27 November . Book at www.sterkinekor com or the SK App Call Ticketline on 086 166

THINKING OUT LOUD
Ek ‘like’ my job
Hoe stap hy? Het die kind kenmerke waaraan sy uitgeken kan word? Ek doen al hierdie dinge omdat my kop vir my sê dat ek binnekort oor hierdie kind moet skryf
SKINS SWIMMERS SET NEW RECORD WITH CAPE TRIPLE CROWN
Duofinish TripleCrown
South African open-water
swimmers Ryan Stramrood and Tracey Steyn have made history as the first skins swimmers – wearing only a costume, cap and goggles –to complete the Cape Triple Crown, one of Cape Town's most formidable marathon swimming challenges, successfully Steyn further cemented her place in the record books by becoming the first woman to complete the Triple Crown in skins, marking a landmark moment for South Africa's coldwater swimming community
The Cape Triple Crown consists of three world-class open water swims: the Double Robben Island Crossing (14,8 km), the False Bay Crossing (33 km), and the Three Capes Swim (10,2 km) The final leg, completed today, saw the swimmers traverse from Cape Point to Cape Maclear and the Cape of Good Hope under the guidance of Derrick Frazer and Big Bay Events, with official ratification by the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association (CLDSA)
BATTLINGRAWCAPECONDITIONS
The Three Capes Swim began at 07:00 in icy 12-degree water, rising to 18 degrees only after rounding Cape Point Known for its unpredictable and often dangerous currents, the Point tested both swimmers as they fought through strong flow and limited visibility caused by thick mist Despite the demanding conditions Stramrood and Steyn pushed through with
for Irish swimmer Barry Murphy before being refined by the CLDSA into its current internationally-recognised format Earlier this year Graeme King became the first male wetsuit swimmer to complete the Triple Crown Frazer praised the milestone, noting that the Triple Crown captures the essence of Cape Town's open-water heritage, from False Bay's intensity to the iconic Robben Island and the dramatic Three Capes coastline
The CLDSA has congratulated everyone involved in making this achievement possible, calling it an exciting moment for endurance swimming in Cape Town With the Cape Triple Crown now firmly on the global radar it is expected to inspire more swimmers, attract international competitors and elevate Cape Town as a premier destination for extreme openwater challenges
