Alight delivery vehicle that drops off people with trolleys on waste collecting days is currently active in the Bothasig area
It is alleged that the people then collect unwanted goods from bins outside homes
Miquette Temlett, Ward councillor, told the newspaper that she does not have a lot of information at this stage
“We just know that a vehicle comes into the ward, drops off 10 to 15 people with recycling trolleys, and then collects
them again in the afternoon I have escalated this to the urban waste and law enforcement department,” she says
INFORMATIONREQUESTED
She says a meeting was held where this information was requested in order to do enforcement Temlett also asked residents for assistance on her social media page "We have had reports of a vehicle dropping people with trolleys in our ward on bin days This has been escalated to the authorities, but we need your help," she wrote on Wednesday 20 August
Residents should always phone 021 480 7700 when the trolleys are in the road, obstructing traffic or causing dangerous situations in traffic, as well as bin picking as all the above are bylaw contraventions, she says In her post Temlett asked that if people do see the vehicle, they should send
a WhatsApp to her directly She requests the registration number, make, model and colour of the vehicle, time and location of the vehicle being spotted and also "any other useful details"
Temlett thanked the community for working with her in keeping the ward safe and well-managed Mario Borchards, Bothasig Community Policing Forum (CPF) chair, says this has been happening for months now He says the CPF took the matter the police, however, they they were informed that no crime is being committed

Environmentalist group, Save a
Fishie is calling for a ban on plastic lollipop sticks after thousands were discovered over the past few months during beach clean-ups.
"Plastic pollution continues to plague Cape Town’s beaches, with one small yet persistent item now in the spotlight: plastic lollipop sticks," says Zoë Prinsloo, founder of Save a Fishie
Save a Fishie has launched a campaign demanding a ban on these products, citing their dangers to marine life, seabirds, and ecosystems
Save a Fishie has launched a petition urging urgent action to ban plasticstemmed lollipops in South Africa
The campaign emphasises that this small shift could mark a significant victory in reducing coastal pollution
“This is one of the easiest environmental victories we can win,” Prinsloo stresses “If we can’t ban plastic lollipop sticks when safe alternatives are already available how can we expect to address bigger plastic challenges?”
AFAMILIARSIGHTONLOCALBEACHES
From Melkbosstrand and Bloubergstrand to Sunset Beach and Milnerton, residents and clean-up volunteers know the scene all too well: after heavy rains or storms, plastic debris litters the shoreline
Among bottle caps, polystyrene, and straws, lollipop sticks are a stubborn and recurring find
Over the years, TygerBurger has reported extensively on how these items, flushed through stormwater drains and rivers, wash ashore in large numbers after winter downpours While unsightly, the danger goes far deeper than appearance posing real threats to ocean health
“Plastic lollipop sticks are one of the most common items we collect during clean-ups,” says Prinsloo “They don’t break down, they end up in the food chain, and they’re completely unnecessary because safer alternatives already exist ”
These small plastic stems, often overlooked, are far from harmless, Prinsloo says Rigid and sharp, they can injure or choke seabirds and marine
SAVE A FISHIE STARTS PETITION TO BAN PLASTIC LOLLIPOP STICKS
animals Over time, they fragment into microplastics that enter the food web, potentially affecting human health as well
“Every stick we find is another reminder of how deep the plastic crisis has become,” Prinsloo says “If we cannot phase out such a simple, replaceable product, then what hope do we have for tackling the larger plastic problem?”
Unlike many environmental challenges that require new innovations or major investment, this issue has an immediate fix: paper lollipop sticks Widely available and just as effective for holding sweets, paper options are biodegradable and far less harmful
“There is absolutely no reason for plastic sticks to still be on our shelves,” Prinsloo explains “Paper sticks work perfectly, they’re affordable, and they don’t destroy the environment ”
Save a Fishie’s campaign identifies clear responsibilities for change:
.Manufacturers: Stop producing plasticstemmed lollipops and commit to paperbased alternatives
.Retailers: Remove plastic versions from shelves and offer only sustainable choices
.Parents, Schools, and Youth Groups: Refuse to buy or distribute plasticstemmed lollipops at events, fundraisers, or as treats
.Government: Enforce legislation banning the manufacture and sale of plastic sticks, in line with global trends phasing out single-use plastics
“Plastic pollution is choking our oceans If we want to protect our beaches, wildlife, and future generations, we need to cut this problem off at the source,” Prinsloo says
LESSONSFROMLOCALCLEAN-UPS
Beach cleanup groups often stress that the litter washing up after storms reflects what is flowing into rivers and stormwater systems daily Once in the sea, these plastics circulate indefinitely
“Every time it rains, we brace ourselves for the waste that will end up on our beaches,” Prinsloo noted “From Milnerton Lagoon right up to Melkbosstrand, plastic lollipop sticks are always among the first items we pick up ”
TygerBurger has previously covered how these items, particularly around Sunset Beach and Bloubergstrand, overwhelm volunteers after storm surges evidence of how entrenched the issue has become South Africa’s beaches are a source of pride, recreation, and tourism They are also vital habitats for marine life Campaigners argue that allowing unnecessary plastic to continue polluting these spaces undermines both environmental health and community well-being
As Prinsloo concluded: “Together, we can stop this source of litter at its root ” . Go to https://chng.it/YFb6hgHgMT to sign the petition
Partnerships struck to ensure smooth entry for international arrivals at Cape Town airport
International visitors to Cape Town are set to have a much smoother arrival, thanks to a near-doubling of capacity in Cape Town International Airport's (CTIA) Border Management Authority (BMA)
A partnership the entity has with the Western Cape Government (WCG) and City of Cape Town with see a boost in the number of its immigration officers
The initiative was officially launched yesterday (Monday 18 August), with officials of all three spheres of government present
A total of 48 assistant port-control officers will be seconded by the City and WCG almost to double the processing capacity at Cape Town International
"This visionary partnership is a vote of confidence in the BMA, which
continues to make meaningful strides in improving border management despite severe resource constraints and a budget shortfall of R4,3 billion," said Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber
"In the face of these constraints the WCG and CoCT have stepped-up to boost immigration capacity at the airport to enhance national security while driving tourism growth and job creation in the city and province
"The Western Cape Government is proud to contribute 24 of our officials to boost operations at CTIA" said Premier Alan Winde
“These young women and men will not only help give operations a boost but also serve as 'ambassadors for our province, welcoming visitors and adding to their positive experience of Cape Town and the Western Cape "
"A smoother, faster experience at the airport means tourists get to Table Mountain before sunset," said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, smiling, "and the tour guide in Langa does not lose business due to airport delays When we all pull together the whole tourism economy benefits "
The City and WCG will each contribute 24 personnel, taking total immigration processing capacity at CTIA from 66 to 114 Assistant port-control officers will perform various duties including customs processing
As City Law Enforcement officers are among those seconded these trained personnel will also be able to offer various safety functions such as search, seizure, arrest and detention where illegal activity is detected

Blind wine tasting got a whole new meaning when the Institute of Cape Wine Masters celebrated its first-ever blind graduate among four new Cape Wine Masters, three of whom are from the Western Cape and one from Johannesburg.
Jacques Lombard from Cape Town has made history for being the first blind candidate to participate in the Cape Wine Masters programme He was joined by fellow Cape Wine Master graduates Riaan van der Spuy, cellar master at Swartland Winery, Janine van Zyl, a sommelier and international account manager at global wine and spirits social media agency FirstPour, and Bradley Wood from Johannesburg, a specialist urologist in private practice
Since its inception in 1983 120 Cape Wine Masters to date have achieved this elite self-study qualification, making this year’s achievements all the more remarkable
The new Cape Wine Masters were celebrated at a prestigious awards luncheon hosted by the Institute of Cape Wine Masters on Friday 22 August, together with the Pinotage Association and the Lanzerac Hotel and Spa The 100th anniversary of pinotage and the first bottled pinotage under the Lanzerac label was also celebrated
TASTINGGROUPFORVISUALLYIMPAIRED
After losing his sight in 1996 at the age of 26, Lombard’s introduction to the wine industry came through an invitation by Hermann Kirschbaum, then winemaker at Buitenverwachting, to join Wine Insight, a wine-tasting group for visually-impaired wine enthusiasts
This unique environment, free from influence by labels, brands, or appearance, honed his reliance on aroma, flavour and
texture, skills that proved invaluable in his wine career
Twenty years later, in 2016, Lombard founded Winebrands, a Cape Town-based wine retail business supported by a dedicated team
A customer’s remark about purchasing only award-winning wines sparked his curiosity about South Africa’s awards system His research revealed that most judges on leading panels were Cape Wine Masters or Masters of Wine, a discovery that inspired him to enrol with the Cape Wine Academy
Progressing through the certificate and diploma courses with distinction, Lombard earned an invitation to join the demanding five-year Cape Wine Masters programme
Throughout his studies he received guidance from no fewer than 84 industry leaders, whose mentorship and generosity he credited as instrumental to his success
For Lombard the Cape Wine Master title is the culmination of a journey defined by resilience, passion and the unwavering belief that wine is best judged by the pleasure it brings in the glass
His dissertation examined the formation, health effects and mitigation of biogenic amines in wine, dispelling common myths about sulphites and highlighting the amine compounds as a key cause of winerelated discomfort
The dissertation investigates the complex role of biogenic amines in wine; nitrogencontaining compounds produced and broken down in the human body through normal metabolic processes While
essential for regulating functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, brain activity, digestion and immune response, these compounds can present significant health risks when consumed in excessive amounts from certain foods and beverages, particularly red wine
The research provides an extensive literature review of factors influencing biogenic amine formation in wine, including microorganisms, terroir, grape cultivar as
well as viticultural and cellar practices
Central to their formation is the activity of lactic-acid bacteria, naturally present in the winemaking environment
An exploratory consumer survey within the study revealed limited public awareness of biogenic amines and their potential effects, underscoring the importance of education in this area
Beyond wine, Lombard maintains an active lifestyle, training weekly on a tandem bicycle and participating annually in the Cape Town Cycle Tour He lives in Welgemoed with his wife, Petro, and their son, Daniel
Love your neighbour as you love yourself
Most Christians would know that this is a well-known commandment found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible
It compels us to treat others with the same level of care, respect, and kindness that we naturally extend to ourselves
This is a sharp contrast to the reality faced in our beloved country today
Whenever you are watching the news or listening to the radio you need to mentally prepare yourself for the worst All we hear is death, rape, murder, violence and other heinous crimes
The Cape Flats is currently bleeding So many senseless killings Families ripped apart
This begs the question then, is this showing love?
Once again, we have political leaders trying to paint a colourful picture, claiming that police have matters under control And that matters are not as bad as they look
If this is the case, why is our president not calling a family meeting to tell us what steps are being taken to stem the killings?
I fail to understand why, even during a crisis such as this, inequality is still rife
On Tuesday 19 August, the parliamentary police portfolio committee chair, Ian Cameron, and two members of parliament came under attack in an attempted hijacking incident in Philippi Within 24 hours, two alleged suspects were apprehended for the crime
Police worked throughout the night to catch the criminals All available resources were deployed to apprehend the perpetrators
..
DURING TIMES OF ADVERSITY, IT IS WISE TO NOTE THAT NOT EVERYONE OR EVERYTHING REQUIRES YOUR REACTION OR RESPONSE.
A total of 24 hours, that's all it took to get the perpetrators Yet, hijackings are a lived reality for many Capetonians
Some rape survivors are still awaiting the police to arrest the culprits Some murderers are still roaming the streets
These MPs were not told that there are no police vehicles available They were not turned away and told to provide proof of the incident They were not made to wait for hours or even treated like the perpetrator
This is the service some ordinary South Africans are met with when they set foot at some police stations
I am in no way trying to downplay what these MPs experienced It is horrific, and no one should have to go through that Isn't it time that the police and those in leadership positions sit around the table, admit that they have failed in their mandate and get back to the drawing board?
How many more mass murders should be reported on? How many more communities should live in fear?
Instead of spending on projects that never come to fruition, create more job opportunities Make education more affordable so that young people can obtain degrees and become employable Invest in educational institutions
As we live in hope that the powers that be wake up soon and act Let us start by ourselves Practice more patience and tolerance with one another
How peaceful this nation would be if we obeyed the commandment to love our neighbour as we love yourself?

Work on the multi-million-rand
Bayside Canal upgrade is set to resume this October after nearly a year-long suspension caused by a contractual dispute with the appointed contractor
The project, which aims to improve water quality within Rietvlei and its surrounding catchment, was halted in November 2024 when approximately 55% of the work had been completed Following due legal processes the matter was formally resolved in June 2025, paving the way for construction to continue once the rainy season is over Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for Water and Sanitation, welcomed the development, stressing the importance of the upgrade for both the environment and local communities “It’s crucial that work on this upgrade can now progress,
as this is one of the City’s key investments to improve water quality within Rietvlei and its surrounds As development within the catchment has grown there is a need to make improvements to the Bayside Canal to enable it to handle increased stormwater flows during peak periods and tackle litter and pollution entering stormwater channels into Rietvlei ”
When work resumes in October construction will focus on the stormwater canal leading to the primary sedimentation ponds, as well as the bypass canal from the secondary treatment channel to Rietvlei
The Bayside Canal upgrade has been the subject of ongoing community interest and concern, with several articles previously published by TygerBurger highlighting

After heated social media debates over the width and layout of the ongoing Table View Beachfront Upgrade, ward councillor Jonathan Mills met with concerned residents on site last week to address their questions directly
One of the project’s key goals, Mills explained, is to create a more pedestrianfriendly space “Pedestrians will take priority in design choices,” he said, noting that similar beachfronts, such as those near Dolphin Beach Hotel and Melkbos, already make use of parallel parking without causing major disruptions
WALKWAYWIDTH
Several residents queried why sections of the new walkway measure only three metres instead of the planned four metres Mills clarified that the reduction occurs in less than 5% of the total length, specifically near Marine Circle
“The road lanes there have to widen around a solid median for safety reasons
We can’t shrink the lanes or bays, so at that point the walkway narrows by one metre The rest remains four metres wide, expanding to six metres at busy points,”
he explained
Concerns were also raised about the perceived loss of parking Mills reassured residents: “We’re not losing parking
Some angled bays are now parallel, but we are adding bays along the service road and in the main car parks to balance it out ”
For those who prefer enjoying the beachfront views from their cars, Mills confirmed improvements: “More parking bays facing out to sea will be added on the service road These are an upgrade from the old bays angled toward Robben Island, as they are also more elevated ”
Mills emphasised that the current design follows plans approved years ago after public participation processes, as TygerBurger reported last week While some earlier illustrations circulated online differed, Mills said these were never the final designs
He also committed to raising additional issues with project managers, including preventing vehicles from driving onto the paving, the use of recycled paving bricks, providing boardwalks to the beach, and ensuring benches remain functional without attracting overnight sleepers
Despite criticism on social media, Mills noted that most feedback from residents –both online and during his meeting – has been positive
“I understand not everyone is happy, but adding this walkway will make a big difference to the beachfront,” he said “It’s about creating a safer, more welcoming public space for everyone ”
The upgrade, expected to be completed later this year, aims to balance pedestrian use, safe traffic flow, and sufficient parking while revitalising one of
both the environmental impact of pollution in Rietvlei and residents’ frustration over the slow progress of the project In past reports residents voiced alarm over litter, plastic waste and untreated stormwater ending up in the wetlands, a key biodiversity area and popular recreational site
The project was originally welcomed as a long-term solution to those concerns, but the suspension in 2024 left many wondering whether it would ever be completed The City’s confirmation that work will now resume offers reassurance
that the promises made to the Table View community, and to Rietvlei itself, are finally back on track
The City has not yet provided a revised completion date for the project, but officials remain confident that once finished, the upgraded system will reduce pollution, improve stormwater management, and protect Rietvlei’s delicate ecosystem
“This project is a vital step in safeguarding our natural environment while ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with development,” Badroodien added

When Ricardo Duarttee from Bellville, SA 7s player and former learner from Stellenberg High School, affectionately known as Tricky Ricky, joined the Blitzboks in 2022 and made his debut in Dubai, he believed his touch rugby background had the biggest impact on his rugby career. He is going to be more involved in coaching clinics and tournaments
"If it wasn't for touch rugby, I would never have developed the ability to take on the role of playmaker for the Springbok 7s team
“I've been playing touch rugby since primary school - every day before school, during first and second break, and even barefoot in the street when friends came over Even if you scraped the skin off your toes, you kept on playing," he says
STARTEDFROMTHEBOTTOM
When he was expelled from Paarl Gymnasium and Paarl Boy's High Schools, he was told by many that his rugby career was over
"I joined Stellenberg High School in Bellville in 2015 and had no idea that it would be the place where my rugby would develop the most
“I was unaware of the competitive touch rugby league in the northern and southern suburbs, but Pierre Bosman from the Vikings touch rugby team, father of Christian and Eugene Bosman, Andries Carstens and Frankie van den Heever from the Warriors Sports Academy, brought a group of Stellenberg rugby boys together
"Every Monday night after rugby practise we would rush off to our touch rugby games in Kuils River, Brackenfell or Kraaifontein Rugby Clubs, and on a Thursday night again after training

TOUCHIES
They enjoyed touchies so much that they entered the Hot Summer of Touch Rugby Tournament, played every December on beaches across the Western Cape from Camps Bay and Macassar to Strand, Kleinmond, Struisbaai, Stilbaai, Mossel Bay and Hartenbos
"In 2020 Craig Wesley Wood invited me to train with the Warriors of Christ, a professional touch team formed by players from Heidelberg, Macassar and Strand
“During the Covid 19-lockdown we trained every Wednesday and Sunday on the beach for at least two hours I was humbled every single day by the talent around me," Duarttee says In 2022 he sold his car to pay for the Stellenbosch Academy of Sports Sevens programme and then realised how much those beach touch rugby sessions had given him a massive edge
"Coach Philip Snyman noticed it and six months later I was offered a contract to join the Springbok Sevens Academy Three months later I got the opportunity to make my debut for the Blitzboks in Dubai
"I am going to be more involved in In2Touch tournaments and coaching clinics to plough back and interested parties can contact Grahame Bobrow on info@touchrugby co za or on 082 492 3683," he says
