"It is my understanding that when the sonofafamily heard something suspicious going on andwent to investigate, the robbers fled the scene seeing him, andran acrossthe N1 towards N1 City Mall. Iwas alsoonthe road lookingfor them when Igot the news

"I found traffic services and highway patrolonthe N1, andwhen Istopped to informthemthey were already informed by DistrictWatch andhad already been patrolling the N1 highway," saysDeonOosthuizen, vice-chair of the neighbourhood watch.

The police were alsonotified.

SLIGHTDECLINEINCRIME

Oosthuizensays it is becoming more common where criminals are looking for weak spots andtesting securitysystems at homes, addingthatdue to thesporadic nature of opportunity crime, it is very difficult to police such incidents.

"That being said the good news is,

despite these events, that our area, including the greater Goodwood area, has seen adecline in crime. Icannot but help notice that thiscoincides with the new recruitsthat have bolstered the manpower at our police station," he says.

Oosthuizen says hopefully the police at anational level will continue pouring resources intostations as it's making a huge difference.

Safety tips forschool runs as newacademic year starts

Withthe 2026 academic year nowinfull swing,parents have been remindedto exercisecautionwhen dropping off or picking up their children from school.

District Group, alocal private security company, last week shared some helpful safety tipsinthis regard, to help parents.

In apost on its social media page, it saysthe daily school run is routine, but that routine can bring risks. Busystreets, predictable routes, andrushed handovers create opportunities for mistakes and crime, they wrote.

The group mentions, however, that smallhabitsmakea big difference. Furthermore,parents are reminded

that payingattentionmatters. “Patterns matter. Criminals andopportunists notice predictable routines. Add distracted drivers, and crowdedstreets,and even minor lapses can escalate,” they warn. They sharedsome simple safetyhabits:

. Vary your route andtiming whenever possible;

. Avoid usingyour phone while driving, stopping or waiting;

. Keep car doors locked when stationary;

. Stay alert to unfamiliar people or vehicles nearby;

. Usedesignateddrop-off zones and;

. Teach childrennot to leave with anyone whoisnot pre-approved.

Thecompany says safe handoversare also key.

Children should always know who is authorised to collect them, what to do if something feels wrong, and that it is okay to refuse and ask for help.

Most incidentsare prevented not by force, but by awareness and early action, your vigilance protects your child and everyone else’s, the company says.

Thecompany also encourages parents and guardians to report suspicious behaviour, unfamiliar vehicles, or any safetyconcerns near aschool.

Baieouersisaandieeuwelvan skoolvervoeruitgelewer

—BRENDEN RUITER
