Years of hard work by local charity organisations and the upliftment of children in Morningstar received another blow when criminals broke in again at the Morningstar community centre in just over a month and stole equipment worth R48 000
The community of Morningstar is crestfallen after all five the computers in the reading centre, that were recently donated by the Rotary Club of Tygerberg after the first break-in in July, were stolen, as well as the sound system of the Durbanville Islamic Society, which use the hall for services on Fridays Equipment was also stolen from the Wifi box in the reading centre
DOORBROKENDOWN
The burglars allegedly gained access by forcing open a window They also forced open the emergency door and broke down a door to the reading centre, which had been repaired by the Rotary Club of Tygerberg after the first break-in
Also the new locks that were installed, were forced open
In the first break-in, which was discovered on Monday 21 July, a total of eight computers that were donated by the Rotary Club of Tygerberg, as well as a microwave oven and two bicycles - still in their boxes - were stolen The bicycles were earmarked to be used by the local neighbourhood watch

Willy Watson, president of the Rotary Club of Tygerberg, expressed their anger

High5empowerskids
The High 5 interactive theatre show visited Curro Brackenfell on Friday after launching in Cape Town for the first time on 4 August with shows currently taking place across Cape Town
"This interactive theatre show was designed to help children aged eight to 11 to deal with the stress and anxiety they face in this digitally-driven world High 5 teaches learners essential tools to help them navigate the issues of stress, anxiety and bullying in a positive way," explains spokesperson Vicky Saunders-Flaherty Through this engaging and interactive session, the High 5 team empowers children to embrace kindness, resilience, safety, bravery and self-acceptance in their daily lives
INSPIREDBYDAUGHTERSEXPERIENCE
Creator of High 5, Kay Cheytanov, was inspired to create High 5 through her own daughter’s experience of being bullied at school, when Kay saw the devastating impact this had on her child
“High 5 was born out of something deeply personal - a moment many parents will recognise I watched my own daughter, still so young, begin to show signs of anxiety and depression Not the kind of nervousness we brush off, but real worry that affected her sleep, her confidence, and her light It was heartbreaking She was being bullied and didn’t know how to tell me that she was not okay It made me realise: we’re waiting too long to teach children how to deal with their emotions,” says Kay “As adults, we often only start learning emotional tools after we’ve already broken down But what if we gave children those tools early, before fear takes root, before silence becomes normal? That’s where
BULLYING LESSONS TAUGHT THROUGH THEATRE
the idea started To create something joyful, powerful, and unforgettable that would equip young learners with practical life tools in a way that felt like play, not therapy ”
At its heart are the five toolskindness, safety, resilience, bravery and individuality
“Each tool became a section in the show
Part of a song A story A feeling that a child could see, hear, and hold onto We piloted High 5 in Johannesburg in 2024, and the response floored me Kids were singing the songs days later Teachers told us their classrooms felt different That’s all the proof I needed that we were onto something important High 5 isn’t just a show It’s a movement A way of saying to every child, You matter You’re not alone ”
“And that little girl who sparked it all? She’s doing just fine I hope to continue this for many years and add more of these success stories along the line,” says Cheytanov

THE SHOP WILL SUPPORT RURAL CHILDREN
Development (CWD) In 1998 CWD was looking for new ways to generate an income and decided to start a second-hand bookshop
elp The Rural Child (HTRC) is bringing its popular charity shop model to Brackenfell with the opening of a new store at Okavango Junction on Monday 1 September. The shop will offer affordable, high-quality preloved goods, with proceeds supporting vulnerable children in rural communities through the Goedgedacht Trust’s Path Onto Prosperity Centres
"This exciting expansion to the communities of the northern suburbs strengthens the organisation's mission to raise vital funds to support rural children in need," says a spokesperson for the organisation, Michelle Gibbs
The Goedgedacht Trust Path Onto Prosperity Centres provide critical support for vulnerable children in rural communities
"These centres offer nutritious meals, homework assistance, after-school care, sports and wellness activities, arts and crafts sessions and holiday programmes, in a safe and nurturing environment, ensuring that rural children who are living in distressed and impoverished conditions are given the opportunity to thrive," says Gibbs
BACKGROUND
The bookshop in a two-storey restored Victorian building in Mowbray opened its doors on 1 July 1998 with a shop manager and 12 volunteers The bookshop went from strength to strength and in 2006, a decision was made to become independent of CWD and Help the Rural Child Trust was formed to support rural children through the Goedgedacht Trust
By 2007, a second shop had opened, on the ground floor of the Mowbray building selling clothing and bric-a-brac
According to its website, HTR Child Charity Shops have grown to presently include seven retail shops, a mobile bookshop and an online children’s bookshop
The Brackenfell shop joins several others across Cape Town, all run with the support of volunteers, and the generosity of donors who drop off used items
“Donations are always welcome, they truly are the lifeblood of our shops,” added HTRC founder Nicky Antonie, encouraging the community to clear out their cupboards and give their unwanted clothing, books, and household goods a second life, while giving rural children a brighter tomorrow
HTRC Rural Child Charity Shops has its origins in Catholic Welfare and
“Every purchase made in our shops is more than just a great find, it’s a direct contribution to creating brighter futures for children who need it most,” says Matthew Cheketri, CEO of HTRC “By opening in Brackenfell, we’re making it easier for the local community to shop sustainably, donate preloved goods, and play a part in transforming lives ” Help The Rural Child invites the public to visit the new shop at Okavango Junction from 1 September and discover the joy of both shopping sustainably and for a worthy cause
The shop will operate from Unit K16, Okavango Junction from Mondays to Fridays beteen 09:00 and 17:00 and Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00
to take place at D’ville

Tcounselling, connect people to services and even work hand-inhand with police and community leaders to stop violence before it starts ”
Welff-Dixon is also a member of the African Religious and Traditional Leaders Council (ARTLC) and inter-faith umbrella body that represents all major faiths in South Africa
“Having faith and having the faith community step up plays a vital role in helping women and men overcome deep social problems like gender-based violence, femicide, domestic abuse, senior and child abuse, corruption and gangsterism Government must do more than talk; it must deliver on its promises or risk losing the trust of the people
“[Yet n]one of these problems can be solved by government alone It takes all of us, faith leaders, police, NGOs, businesses and ordinary citizens pulling together
“The role of the police is also critical Without committed, honest officers on the ground, our women and girls will never truly be safe And then there are the non-profits These organisations are often the ones doing the hard work in the background: feeding families in crisis, running shelters, helping women rebuild their lives after abuse, supporting children at risk, and making sure ordinary people have access to justice Without them, the fight against poverty, violence, and exploitation would be almost impossible ”
Before the P20, Minister of Women, Youth and People with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga spoke to women from civil society organisations, among them the TWM Foundation, which fosters justice and healing In Women’s Month it visited De Waalshof farm in Stellenbosch to talk to women farmworkers about GBV, substance abuse and seasonal job insecurity

The City has commended the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) for leading the way in zero-waste-tolandfill
Its Urban Waste Management Directorate applauded the tertiary institution for its bold step in leading and embracing a zero-waste journey in the higher-education sector Its Zero-Waste Initiative was launched at its Bellville campus this week, and how institutions of higher learning can lead the way in creating a sustainable future was showcased
At the event Grant Twigg, Mayco member for urban waste management, emphasised that universities, businesses and government must all move beyond words and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability through real action
"Hope is not in what we say, but in what we do If it cannot be reused, recycled or composted then it doesn't belong in our future This kind of campus outreach is vital By engaging directly with students we are helping to grow a generation of environmentallyconscious citizens who understand that every small action – from separating recyclables to refusing single-

THECITYCALLSON:

Dial-a-Rideservice
The City of Cape Town has confirmed that its specialised Diala-Ride transport service will be realigned from Monday 8 September to focus primarily on transporting persons with severe mobility impairments to and from work. The shift, according to Rob Quintas, Mayco member for urban mobility, is a necessary response to an unsustainable financial model and an opportunity to expand access through broader, long-term transport investment
In a statement Quintas explained the reasoning behind the change, citing spiralling operational costs and increasing demand that far exceeds the service’s original design “We agree that mobility is key to independence, dignity and participation in society,” said Quintas “(But) the reality is that we cannot sustain an ever-expanding demand ”
The current cost per Dial-a-Ride trip averages R737, with users contributing only R22 The City subsidises each trip by approximately R515, while the Western Cape Government covers the remaining R200 This amounts to a monthly cost of roughly R31 000 to transport a single user who travels 21 days per month equating to over R370 000 per user annually
“The financial model is unsustainable The service is currently running at a deficit of nearly R1 million per month," Quintas said "We have explored multiple options in trying to secure funding from other sources, but without assistance from National Government, the City has no alternative but to align the service with the available funding ”
MANDATE
Dial-a-Ride was introduced in 2002 as
R31000
The average monthly cost to transport a single user who travels 21 days per month.
working individuals with severe mobility impairments, intended to fill the gap until public transport systems became fully accessible Over time, demand expanded beyond the initial scope, including trips for education, healthcare, and social participation creating pressure on limited resources
Quintas clarified that while the City values these needs, it must prioritise livelihoods within constrained budgets
“This decision does not mean we undervalue trips for education, healthcare, or social participation,” he said “(But) within limited budgets, we must prioritise livelihoods while building the broader system of universal access "
Approximately 260 active users will be affected by the service’s return to its original mandate
Quintas emphasised the real investment lies in building a fully inclusive and accessible transport system that benefits far more people
In May, Council adopted the Universal Access Policy for Accessible Transport, which commits the City to developing a transport network where all people regardless of ability can move safely and independently The MyCiTi bus service already meets accessibility standards, and the upcoming Phase 2A will extend inclusive access to communities in Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain Quintas called on national government employers and civil society
Arrival experience to improve at CapeTown International Airport
International visitors to Cape Town are set to have a much smoother arrival, thanks to a near-doubling of capacity in Cape Town International Airport’s (CTIA) Border Management Authority (BMA)
A partnership the entity has with the Western Cape Government (WCG) and City of Cape Town with see a boost in the number of its immigration officers
The initiative was officially launched yesterday (Monday 18 August), with officials of all three spheres of government present
PARTNERSHIP
A total of 48 assistant port-control officers will be seconded by the City and WCG almost to double the processing capacity at Cape Town International
“This visionary partnership is a vote of confidence in the BMA, which continues to make meaningful strides in improving border management despite severe resource constraints and a budget shortfall of R4,3 billion,” said Home Affairs
Minister Leon Schreiber
“In the face of these constraints the WCG and CoCT have stepped-up to boost immigration capacity at the airport to enhance national security while driving tourism growth and job creation in the city and province
“The Western Cape Government is proud to contribute 24 of our officials to boost operations at CTIA” said Premier Alan Winde
“These young women and men will not only help give operations a boost but also serve as ‘ambassadors’ for our province, welcoming visitors and adding to their positive experience of Cape Town and the Western Cape ”
FASTEREXPERIENCE
“A smoother, faster experience at the airport means tourists get to Table Mountain before sunset,” said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, smiling, “and the tour guide in Langa does not lose business due to airport delays When we all pull together the whole tourism economy benefits ”
The City and WCG will each contribute 24 personnel, taking total immigration processing capacity at CTIA from 66 to 114 Assistant port-control officers will perform various duties including customs processing
As City Law Enforcement officers are among those seconded these trained personnel will also be able to offer various safety functions such as search, seizure, arrest and detention where illegal activity is detected
Blindwinemastertriumphs
Blind wine tasting got a whole new meaning when the Institute of Cape Wine Masters celebrated its first-ever blind graduate among four new Cape Wine Masters, three of whom are from the Western Cape and one from Johannesburg.
Jacques Lombard from Cape Town has made history for being the first blind candidate to participate in the Cape Wine Masters programme He was joined by fellow Cape Wine Master graduates Riaan van der Spuy, cellar master at Swartland Winery, Janine van Zyl, a sommelier and international account manager at global wine and spirits social media agency FirstPour, and Bradley Wood from Johannesburg, a specialist urologist in private practice
Since its inception in 1983 120 Cape Wine Masters to date have achieved this elite self-study qualification, making this year’s achievements all the more remarkable
The new Cape Wine Masters were celebrated at a prestigious awards luncheon hosted by the Institute of Cape Wine Masters on Friday 22 August, together with the Pinotage Association and the Lanzerac Hotel and Spa The 100th anniversary of pinotage and the first bottled pinotage under the Lanzerac label was also celebrated
TASTINGGROUPFORVISUALLYIMPAIRED
After losing his sight in 1996 at the age of 26, Lombard’s introduction to the wine industry came through an invitation by Hermann Kirschbaum, then winemaker at Buitenverwachting, to join Wine Insight, a wine-tasting group for visually-impaired wine enthusiasts
This unique environment, free from influence by labels, brands, or appearance,
A JOURNEY DEFINED BY RESILIENCE, PASSION AND THE UNWAVERING BELIEF
honed his reliance on aroma, flavour and texture, skills that proved invaluable in his wine career
DISTINCTION
Twenty years later, in 2016, Lombard founded Winebrands, a Cape Town-based wine retail business supported by a dedicated team
A customer’s remark about purchasing only award-winning wines sparked his curiosity about South Africa’s awards system His research revealed that most judges on leading panels were Cape Wine Masters or Masters of Wine, a discovery that inspired him to enrol with the Cape Wine Academy
Progressing through the certificate and diploma courses with distinction, Lombard earned an invitation to join the demanding five-year Cape Wine Masters programme
Throughout his studies he received guidance from no fewer than 84 industry leaders, whose mentorship and generosity he credited as instrumental to his success
For Lombard the Cape Wine Master title is the culmination of a journey defined by resilience, passion and the unwavering belief that wine is best judged by the pleasure it brings in the glass
His dissertation examined the formation, health effects and mitigation of biogenic amines in wine, dispelling common myths about sulphites and highlighting the amine compounds as a key cause of winerelated discomfort
The dissertation investigates the complex role of biogenic amines in wine; nitrogencontaining compounds produced and
broken down in the human body through normal metabolic processes While essential for regulating functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, brain activity, digestion and immune response, these compounds can present significant health risks when consumed in excessive amounts from certain foods and beverages, particularly red wine The research provides an extensive literature review of factors influencing biogenic amine formation in wine, including
microorganisms, terroir, grape cultivar as well as viticultural and cellar practices
Central to their formation is the activity of lactic-acid bacteria, naturally present in the winemaking environment
An exploratory consumer survey within the study revealed limited public awareness of biogenic amines and their potential effects, underscoring the importance of education in this area
Beyond wine, Lombard maintains an active lifestyle, training weekly on a tandem bicycle and participating annually in the Cape Town Cycle Tour
He lives in Welgemoed with his wife, Petro, and their son, Daniel

THINKING OUT LOUD
How peaceful would we be if we loved others?
Love your neighbour as you love yourself
Most Christians would know that this is a well-known commandment found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible
It compels us to treat others with the same level of care, respect, and kindness that we naturally extend to ourselves
This is a sharp contrast to the reality faced in our beloved country today
Whenever you are watching the news or listening to the radio you need to mentally prepare yourself for the worst All we hear is death, rape, murder, violence and other heinous crimes
The Cape Flats is currently bleeding So many senseless killings Families ripped apart
This begs the question then, is this showing love?
Once again, we have political leaders trying to paint a colourful picture, claiming that police have matters under control And that matters are not as bad as they look
If this is the case, why is our president not calling a family meeting to tell us what steps are being taken to stem the killings?
I fail to understand why, even during a crisis such as this, inequality is still rife
On Tuesday 19 August, the parliamentary police portfolio committee chair, Ian Cameron, and two members of parliament came under attack in an attempted hijacking incident in Philippi Within 24 hours, two alleged suspects were apprehended for the crime
Police worked throughout the night to catch the criminals All available resources were deployed to apprehend the perpetrators
..
DURING TIMES OF ADVERSITY, IT IS WISE TO NOTE THAT NOT EVERYONE OR EVERYTHING REQUIRES YOUR REACTION OR RESPONSE.
A total of 24 hours, that's all it took to get the perpetrators Yet, hijackings are a lived reality for many Capetonians
Some rape survivors are still awaiting the police to arrest the culprits Some murderers are still roaming the streets
These MPs were not told that there are no police vehicles available They were not turned away and told to provide proof of the incident They were not made to wait for hours or even treated like the perpetrator
This is the service some ordinary South Africans are met with when they set foot at some police stations
I am in no way trying to downplay what these MPs experienced It is horrific, and no one should have to go through that Isn't it time that the police and those in leadership positions sit around the table, admit that they have failed in their mandate and get back to the drawing board?
How many more mass murders should be reported on? How many more communities should live in fear?
Instead of spending on projects that never come to fruition, create more job opportunities Make education more affordable so that young people can obtain degrees and become employable Invest in educational institutions
As we live in hope that the powers that be wake up soon and act Let us start by ourselves Practice more patience and tolerance with one another
How peaceful this nation would be if we obeyed the commandment to love our neighbour as we love yourself?

AVRILFILLIES

Calltobanplasticlollipopsticks
KAILINDANIELS
KAILIN DANIELS@NOVUSMEDIA CO ZA
Environmentalist group,
Save a Fishie is calling for a ban on plastic lollipop sticks after thousands were discovered over the past few months during beach cleanups
"Plastic pollution continues to plague Cape Town’s beaches, with one small yet persistent item now in the spotlight: plastic lollipop sticks," says Zoë Prinsloo, founder of Save a Fishie
Save a Fishie has launched a campaign demanding a ban on these products, citing their dangers to marine life, seabirds, and ecosystems
PETITIONFORCHANGE
Save a Fishie has launched a petition urging urgent action to ban plastic-stemmed lollipops in South Africa
The campaign emphasises that this small shift could mark a significant victory in reducing coastal pollution
“This is one of the easiest environmental victories we can win,” Prinsloo stresses “If we can’t ban plastic lollipop sticks when safe alternatives are already available how can we expect to address bigger plastic challenges?”
AFAMILIARSIGHTONLOCALBEACHES
From Melkbosstrand and
Bloubergstrand to Sunset Beach and Milnerton, residents and clean-up volunteers know the scene all too well: after heavy rains or storms, plastic debris litters the shoreline Among bottle caps, polystyrene, and straws, lollipop sticks are a stubborn and recurring find
Over the years, TygerBurger has reported extensively on how these items, flushed through stormwater drains and rivers, wash ashore in large numbers after winter downpours While unsightly, the danger goes far deeper than appearance posing real threats to ocean health
“Plastic lollipop sticks are one of the most common items we collect during clean-ups,” says Prinsloo “They don’t break down, they end up in the food chain, and they’re completely unnecessary because safer alternatives already exist ”
THEHIDDENDANGERSOF PLASTICSTICKS
These small plastic stems, often overlooked, are far from harmless, Prinsloo says Rigid and sharp, they can injure or choke seabirds and marine animals Over time, they fragment into microplastics that enter the food web, potentially affecting human health as well
“Every stick we find is another reminder of how deep the plastic crisis has become,” Prinsloo says
SAVE A FISHIE STARTS PETITION TO BAN PLASTIC LOLLIPOP STICKS
“If we cannot phase out such a simple, replaceable product, then what hope do we have for tackling the larger plastic problem?”
Unlike many environmental challenges that require new innovations or major investment, this issue has an immediate fix: paper lollipop sticks Widely available and just as effective for holding sweets, paper options are biodegradable and far less harmful
“There is absolutely no reason for plastic sticks to still be on our shelves,” Prinsloo explains “Paper sticks work perfectly, they’re affordable, and they don’t destroy the environment ”
WHONEEDSTOACT?
Save a Fishie’s campaign identifies clear responsibilities for change:
.Manufacturers: Stop producing plastic-stemmed lollipops and commit to paperbased alternatives
.Retailers: Remove plastic versions from shelves and offer only sustainable choices
.Parents, Schools, and
Youth Groups: Refuse to buy or distribute plastic-stemmed lollipops at events, fundraisers, or as treats
.Government: Enforce legislation banning the manufacture and sale of plastic sticks, in line with global trends phasing out single-use plastics
“Plastic pollution is choking our oceans If we want to protect our beaches, wildlife, and future generations, we need to cut this problem off at the source,” Prinsloo says
LESSONSFROMLOCALCLEAN-UPS
Beach cleanup groups often stress that the litter washing up after storms reflects what is flowing into rivers and stormwater systems daily Once in the sea, these plastics circulate
indefinitely
“Every time it rains, we brace ourselves for the waste that will end up on our beaches,” Prinsloo noted
TygerBurger has previously covered how these items, particularly around Sunset Beach and Bloubergstrand, overwhelm volunteers after storm surges evidence of how entrenched the issue has become South Africa’s beaches are a source of pride, recreation, and tourism They are also vital habitats for marine life Campaigners argue that allowing unnecessary plastic to continue polluting these spaces undermines both environmental health and community well-being .
