A SERIOUSLY ill patient from Jeffreys Bay has described a harrowing ordeal at Humansdorp Hospital, where she and other patients were allegedly left unattended for hours after medical staff fled from a violent, mentally ill patient
Mieta Williams-Jan, who suffers from critically low blood levels requiring urgent treatment, was admitted to Humansdorp Hospital on 25 August, after being referred by Pellsrus Clinic in Jeffreys Bay
What should have been routine medical care turned into a traumatic experience that has left her questioning patient safety protocols at the facility Williams-Jan said that the most serious incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning (26 August) when a mentally ill patient, who had been causing disturbances throughout Monday, allegedly violently attacked medical staff in
the casualty ward
"The mentally ill woman started beating the doctor, who was busy with my results She then proceeded to badly damage the casualty ward," said Williams-Jan
"The doctors and nurses ran for safety, and we were left with no emergency staff " Williams-Jan said that patients remained unattended from approximately 03:40 until 06:00 when the first matron arrived
During this time, she said that she and other patients were left vulnerable in the casualty ward with no medical supervision
"I believe that to feel safe as a patient is not too much to ask for," said Williams-Jan
She alleges that hospital management later explained to patients that this was not an isolated incident
"A person from the management team came and explained that it was not the first, second, or third time emergency staff were attacked, and it was reported
to management This is why the staff had had enough," said Williams-Jan
She said that her plea is for the hospital to install a boom gate to control access to the hospital
While there are security guards outside, Williams-Jan said that the hospital should also have security inside the hospital building who are able to deal with mentally ill patients
"While at the hospital, I have experienced incidents where mentally ill patients, who are known to the hospital staff and management, take food while the hospital staff are not looking," said Williams-Jan
Her ordeal was further complicated when she returned to Humansdorp Hospital from Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital in Gqeberha on Wednesday afternoon at about 16:30 following a bone marrow procedure, only to discover her medical file was missing
"I arrived here around 16:30, still in pain, sitting in a chair with no clear di-
rection," said Williams-Jan
"I feel my rights as a patient were violated " Williams-Jan said that she waited until 22:35 before her file was located, thanks to a nurse from the surgical ward who knew her case
Despite the traumatic experience, she praised the dedication of the medical team who assisted her when she first arrived on 25 August and those who prioritised the health of their patients
"Monday morning, when I was referred, on arrival, I was attended to by the best nurses and doctors I don't have any complaints about my experience with them My health and the health of the other patients were prioritised," said Williams-Jan
The Eastern Cape Department of Health was approached for comment on 3 September regarding the safety concerns and alleged incidents at Humansdorp Hospital, but no response was received by the time of publication

THE JBay Recycling Project is calling for community volunteers to step forward and support a vital weekly programme that serves around 200 children every Monday
This call comes as their current team of dedicated volunteers prepares to complete their gap year journey
As previously reported, the JBay Recycling Project was initially established in 2011 to alleviate poverty and pollution by providing access to basic essentials for children, while simultaneously cleaning up the environment and educating the youth about the importance of a healthy environment
Since January, the students from the Victory Gap Year (VGY) programme have been the backbone of the project's Monday operations, but their time at the JBay Recycling Project has come to an end, leaving a significant gap in volunteer support through to 8 December
Tanja Lategan, the JBay Recycling Project coordinator, said that they have been extremely fortunate to have the VGY students as volunteers at JBay Recycling Project
"Since January, they have assisted the children who visit the project every Monday They have really been such a joy, but their programme is coming to an end and they are not available for most of the remainder of 2025," said Lategan
The VGY students, aged between 19 and 25 and based at Victory Church in Jeffreys Bay, initially volunteered from 14:00 to 16:00 on Mondays Lategan said that while the students were slightly unsure at first about what was expected, they soon gained confidence and became invaluable team members
"They soon felt confident enough to slot in anywhere from assisting the children to carry their bags, getting registration cards, checking, sorting and weighing each contribution, washing hands, assisting with shopping, dishing up meals, washing up and lots and lots of playing, drawing, colouring, joking, praise and heartfelt connections," said Lategan
She said that the teen girls who deliver recyclable material on Mondays feel very special when they receive recognition from the young women from VGY, while the little kids love playing with the young male students and using them as "jungle gyms"
"It's wonderful to see the joy the children find in the students' company," said Lategan
"The children are often shy when they first meet the students, but they are treated with such kindness that on their next visit they run straight up to their preferred volunteer whom they have identified as their friend "
Lategan said that these volunteers have removed a huge amount of stress from the JBay Recycling Project's coordination
She said that knowing they have suffi-

children and allow time for play
"Even if you are available for an hour or two, that can make a difference You just need to show up with willing hands, a kind heart and love for our community," said Lategan
She added that prospective volunteers don't need special training, though nurses, teachers, and artists are always welcome Lategan said that all activities take place in group settings, and uncertain volunteers can check with regular team members for guidance As a volunteer-run non-profit organisation, she said that the JBay Recycling Project relies entirely on community support, and they therefore cannot afford to pay volunteers
"Even though we are not able to pay, it is such a privilege to be a volunteer It really is the most remarkable therapy and inspiration," said Lategan She said that they also welcome donations of stock, financial contributions, children's toys and sports equipment, and support for their partner

HISTORY was made in Kouga on 29 August, when the Kouga Municipality proudly hosted the first-ever StrongHer International Award ceremony in South Africa, celebrating unstoppable women who uplift and inspire their communities
The honour of being crowned the inaugural Kouga winner went to Ziyanda Kilimani (28), whose remarkable impact and dedication captured the essence of the award
She was joined by four outstanding finalists, Charlotte Visage, Lynn Breytenbach, Berna Biggs, and Bonita Hope Fourie, each recognised for their extraordinary contributions to the community
The award represents a groundbreaking collaboration between the City of Birmingham, Alabama, and Kouga Municipality, with Kouga chosen to launch this global initiative locally
For the past seven years, the award has been celebrated in Birmingham, honouring women who lead with strength and purpose
Now, Kouga women have been given the same international platform Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said they not only celebrated women, but they also elevated everyday heroes who are quietly changing lives
"This award was about shining a spotlight on those who do not look for it but deserve it Kouga is full of powerful, purpose-driven women, and now the world knows it too," said Bornman
For Kilimani, a mother from Thornhill, the recognition came as a complete shock
"I was speechless I couldn't believe that my efforts had been recognised on such a prestigious platform," said Kilimani
Her journey to this moment began years ago when she established the Thornhill Uprising Stars Football Club, driven by a desire to address what she saw as society's neglect of young men
"I believe that society has forgotten about boys while prioritising girls, and I decided to be a game changer Boys are suffering emotionally because they are being told that men

do not cry, which has left them with anger issues," said Kilimani
She said that her soccer club, therefore, serves a dual purpose, developing athletic talent while building character
"I wanted to create opportunities for young people in Thornhill and take boys off the streets to create a safer community," said Kilimani
Beyond soccer, Kilimani runs "A Dream Come True M D by LadyZee," an initiative that assists less fortunate matriculants throughout the Kouga region with their matric farewell celebrations
"With the little money I have, I bless two less fortunate matriculants, a girl and a boy, covering everything needed for their matric dance," said Kilimani
She said that she visits the school of her choice to choose the lucky matriculants, then visits their homes to meet with parents or guardians
As a teenage mother, Kilimani faced significant challenges but refused to let them define her future
"Teenage pregnancy didn't end my future nor stop me from achieving anything I want in this life," said Kilimani
Her resilience clearly made an impact on those closest to her, with her 12-year-old son, Iminathi, nominating her for the award
He described her as "not only his mother but a mother to the nation "
The heartfelt nomination deeply moved Kilimani
"It brings tears to my eyes His words mean the world to me," said Kilimani
"We grew up like brother and sister Iminathi is like me; he shares, and he has a beautiful heart," said Kilimani
Reflecting on her recognition, she sees it as more than a personal achievement
"This recognition is not just about me; it's about the community that has supported me every step of the way," said Kilimani
"Im still in disbelief How can a girl from the dusty streets of Thornhill receive this big international recognition? But it's God's doing
"This award is for all the young girls and young women who are my peers This is proof that you can overcome anything in this life "
For women facing similar challenges that she faced, she said she wants them to learn that with determination, hard work and resilience, they can overcome any obstacles and achieve their dreams
"Start with what you're passionate about, and don't be afraid to take that first step Surround yourself with like-minded individuals, and remember that every small action can lead to a

significant impact," said Kilimani
Looking ahead, Kilimani envisions creating a legacy of empowered young women who are confident, resilient, and determined to make a difference in their communities
She further reminds mothers who balance their own children with community care that they are not alone
"You're not alone Your work is invaluable, and your love and dedication are shaping the next generation Ask God to give you all the strength and wisdom that will be needed," said Kilimani
The significance of bringing this international award to South Africa is not lost on Kilimani
"Its an honour to be recognised globally for my contributions It shows that my work can transcend borders and inspire others," said Kilimani
"I'd like to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported me on this journey Let's continue to uplift and empower each other, and let's keep making a difference in our communities "
IT has been over two weeks since Akhumzi Masoka (17) from Humansdorp and a learner at Grey High School in Gqeberha, boarded a flight to the United Kingdom for his three-month rugby exchange programme at Hurstpierpoint College, where he is thriving
As previously reported, Akhumzi will spend over three months at the renowned UK institution as part of an initiative aimed at fostering international sporting and academic connections
According to his mother, Thembakazi, he's adjusting remarkably well to his new environment
"He's been adjusting well, and he has made a lot of friends Everyone is very welcoming and offers to help him out whenever he needs something," said Thembakazi
She said that he has enjoyed spending time with his new friends and exploring the area
"He shared with me that he recently walked around the malls and the city with some of his new friends They bought clothes and also took pictures in one of the photo booths close to Brighton Beach," said Thembakazi
Despite the excitement ahead of his flight on 23 August, she said that it was bittersweet to say goodbye to her son
The exchange programme, now in its second year, will see Akhumzi staying at Hurstpierpoint College s boarding house
from 24 August to 7 December, under the pastoral care of Fred Pierrepont, Hurstpierpoint's Head of Rugby
"It was very painful I had mixed emotions and even shed tears because he'll be away for a long time Three months is long for a mom who sees her son once or twice a month," said Thembakazi
"I'm also happy this is a big break for Akhumzi We are so proud of him "
The journey to make Akhumzi's exchange programme a reality became a testament to the power of community support
When the significant costs threatened to derail the opportunity, the response from neighbours, friends, and even strangers left his mother deeply moved
"I was deeply moved to see neighbours, friends, and even people I don't personally know come together for my son It was overwhelming It shows me that this dream belongs not just to him, but to the whole community," said Thembakazi
Among the many acts of generosity, one gesture stood out particularly Nosthembiso Williams sponsored a cow for the fundraising efforts and then bought it back herself, donating R10,000 to Akhumzi's cause
"It meant a lot because no one could have done what she (Nosthembiso Williams) did for us," said Thembakazi
She further said that while two companies also made donations, the majority of support came from individuals
"The rest was taken care of by Maggie
and Stuart Graham, not forgetting to mention Betty Anoster, Xolani Woni, Wever Madlwabinga, and Reginald and Lisa Solani They have played a big role We'll forever be grateful," said Thembakazi
"The most surprising moment during the fundraising process was the willingness of people to donate They showed so much support
"Thank you from the bottom of my heart
You have invested in my son's future, and I will never forget your generosity Each of you has played a part in making this opportunity possible, and I am so grateful "
As a mother watching her son embrace this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Thembakazi has clear hopes for what Akhumzi will gain from the experience
"I hope he grows not only as a rugby player, but also as a young man I want him to experience a new culture, learn independence, and gain confidence Most importantly, I hope he comes back with lessons he can share with others, both on and off the field," said Thembakazi
She said that this journey represents more than just a rugby exchange; it's proof that dreams can become reality with the right support
"This journey is just the beginning for Akhumzi I believe he will use this opportunity wisely and make the community proud I also hope his story encourages other families to keep nurturing their children's talents because with the right support, dreams can come true," said Thembakazi

AFTER 36 years of unwavering commitment to education, Johannes Du Plooy officially retired as principal of Patensie Primary School on 31 July, marking the end of an era for the local community
Du Plooy began his journey in education on 1 January 1989 as a teacher at Patensie Primary School What started as his first teaching position became a lifelong dedication to the school and its learners His proximity to the school, living in Patensie, made the role particularly suitable for the educator who would go on to shape countless young lives
Reflecting on his early days, Du Plooy said that when he began teaching at Patensie Primary, it was quite a learning curve since he did not have any mentors to assist him
Thankfully, once he settled in and gained more experience as an educator, things improved His career progress was steady and well-deserved
In 1995, he was promoted to Head of Department, and just two years later, in 1997, he assumed the role of principal, a position he would hold with distinction for 27 years
Throughout his tenure, Du Plooy said that he witnessed significant changes in the education landscape, with changes in the community affecting the school
"In the early years of my career, it was easier as discipline was of a high standard, but things gradually changed as the culture within the community changed," said Du Plooy "Since the community is ever changing, each year there is a new group of learners who have experienced a different culture within their community "
Du Plooy further noted that being a teacher was previously a respectable profession; however, that has changed greatly He also said that the increasing administrative burden placed on

educators, as well as adapting to many new policy changes, has been difficult
Despite these challenges, Du Plooy emphasised the positive aspects of his career, particularly the relationships he built with colleagues "I have enjoyed my time with my colleagues, who have become like family We have all built up good relationships over the years," said Du Plooy
Even in retirement, Du Plooy remains connected to the school, visiting once a week to provide assistance where needed However, he plans to reduce these visits gradually, admitting he will miss his colleagues and the school
Reflecting on the lasting impact of his work, Du Plooy said, "One of the many highlights of my career has been when my former learners progress well in their chosen careers "
Looking ahead, the retired principal has clear plans for his newfound free time Du Plooy said
he looks forward to being more active at his church and participating in the Rehoboth Minister's community soup kitchen initiative
Additionally, he hopes to help local learners with their homework, continuing his commitment to education in a different capacity
Teacher Charlise Francis, speaking on behalf of the school staff, paid tribute to the retiring principal
"We wish to honour and thank our principal, Johannes Du Plooy," said Francis "He has changed many hearts and played a massive role in the community and continues to do so "
Francis further acknowledged the emotional impact of his departure
"Although many tears were shed on 31 July, his last official day, we as the staff of Patensie Primary wish him well on his retirement," said Francis "Thank you for your service at Patensie Primary as well as to the community "

For this first-time entry, our learners set out to make a real impact not only by helping the environment but also by bringing joy to children in need
Their journey began with colourful posters placed all over Jeffreys Bay, calling on the community to donate plastic shopping bags And respond they did more than 500 bags were collected!
With sleeves rolled up and creativity flowing, these bags were carefully transformed into jumping ropes and baby crinkle toys colourful, safe, and handmade with love
What followed was a moment of pure magic: the learners visited local children’s homes and a community centre, where they personally handed out the toys and spent the afternoon playing with the children
The smiles and laughter shared that day were the true prize
The learners travelled to the official Environmental Project event for final judging
Their presentation included a short drama performance to creatively showcase their journey Out of 30 participating schools, JBay Academy was proudly placed 7th a massive achievement for a first-time entry!

ON 26 June, 18 grade 10 learners, along with their teachers, embarked on Global Leadership Academy's fifth TravelSCHOOL
This year they explored South America, travelling to Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil, even taking a bus through Argentina, and returning to South Africa on 2 August
Jacomien Hauman, Coordinator of TravelSCHOOL, said that in Paraguay and Uruguay, they focused on serving like-minded people on their farms
During this time, they helped by removing invasive alien plants, harvesting manjoka (a local staple), preparing fields for planting, digging foundations for new buildings, and performing other upkeep tasks
Hauman said that they had the opportunity to visit locals in their homes to encourage them and pray for them
In addition, the group visited world-famous sites like the breathtaking Iguazu Waterfalls in Brazil and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Hauman further said that the capital city of Paraguay, Asunción, was also explored in smaller groups while doing a challenge with tasks like playing soccer with locals, sharing the gospel with someone, tasting maté (a traditional drink), and praying for learners of another Christian school
Learners shared their reflections on the experience Lizé Serfontein said that TravelSCHOOL taught her how to get out of her comfort zone, while Tané Jansen van Vuuren said that the experience was not just about the adventure and the places they reached, but hearing God's whispers along the way
Tristan du Toit said that they set out on a school adventure, but God turned it into a journey of hope, meaning and growth
The goal of TravelSCHOOL is to come alongside the vision of GLA: Making Disciples, Shaping Leaders
Discipleswhoare:
firm in their Christian faith willing to share the Gospel aware of the global need for the church to take its rightful place
Leaders who are: able to endure hardships to (further) develop true character willing to embrace learning in a different way loving and serving ready to have fun and adventure
Hauman said that GLA was birthed from the mission organisation called Global Challenge, which is based in Jeffreys Bay She said that this organisation annually challenges young people to go throughout the world to deepen their personal relationship with the Lord, spread the gospel, serve the local church, and care for the marginalised, while travelling in a simplistic way and awaiting adventure in unexpected places
"TravelSCHOOL which started in 2019, aims to expose grade 10 learners to a similar experience during the five and a half weeks that they are travelling while completing their academic work," said Hauman
"The school strongly believes that learning intellectually, emotionally and spiritually is often enhanced when confronted with different cultures, environments, and challenges " Hauman said that they aimed to provide a transformative learning experience for learners, and although the trip only took place in June, the staff started a discipling journey

with the learners in February, with weekly Bible studies in a small group, a preparation camp in April, and regular meetings to help them prepare She said that during TravelSCHOOL, learners were required not only to take responsibility for their academic work, but also for cooking, washing and general cleaning duties
Hauman said that they also travelled simplistically, sleeping on camping mattresses, making use of public transport, and taking everything they needed in their backpacks
Adding to this, Principal Stefan Kleyn said they do not want to foster a culture of entitlement, but rather come alongside local churches and communities to experience what their daily lives look like Hauman further said that they hope to have awakened hearts for servanthood in their learners, showing them that it is often our willingness to help, and not necessarily our skill sets, that can open doors for relationships to be built
"Exposing a grade 10 learner to a variety of serving opportunities could also spark an idea of what career path they could follow after school For example, one of our learners, Anine Slabbert, says that she might consider a career in agriculture," said Hauman
She said that the outcomes were pursued while aiming to have fun and adventure, often experienced in moments as simple as singing on a local bus ride or exploring a foreign marketplace
"It is a big vision, especially for five weeks But we trust that the Lord is not limited by time and opportunity We believe that this was just the start of a great discovery for our learners, and that it stands to advance His Kingdom," said Hauman
The teachers who travelled were Stefan Kleyn, his wife, Estee, and their daughters Elsofie and Rebecca Additional travellers were Jacomien Hauman, Jeanette Naudé, André Agenbag (student teacher), and Hanlie Fry
