Gevangene doodgery

Helderstroom-gevangenis

val nog ondersoek.

SRWs thrive at 6,5% annual growth

For more than five decades, the recovery of South Africa’s southern right whale population from the impacts of commercial whaling has been closely tracked through annual aerial surveys.

According to CapeNature these surveys, conducted each year since 1969, involve counting every female whale with a calf along the coast between Nature’s Valley and Muizenberg. From 1979 onwards, the surveys were expanded to include photo-identification, a technique that uses overhead photographs of the unique callosity patterns on each whale’s head to recognise individuals.

“Thanks to this effort, we now know the population contains around 6 500 whales and is still increasing at roughly 6,5% per year. With 55 years of continuous records, the survey represents one of the world’s longest-running, uninterrupted

datasets for any marine mammal species,” said a spokesperson of CapeNature.

The 2025 southern right whale aerial survey was scheduled to begin on Monday 29 September and will be carried out following established protocols. The coastline between Nature’s Valley and Muizenberg will be flown using a Eurocopter AS350 (Squirrel) helicopter at an altitude of about 300 m. During the survey, sightings of all whale species are logged.

Particular focus is given to southern right whale females with calves, as well as individuals with distinctive brindle colouration or other unique markings. From 6 October, the MRI Whale Unit at the University of Pretoria will again conduct boat-based fieldwork in Walker Bay to deploy satellite transmitters on adult southern right whales.

A preliminary count survey conducted in early September this year indicated a total of

154 females with associated calves between Hermanus and Witsand, similar to what was observed in 2021. When the survey is finalised, it will provide an update on the precise number of whales counted and photographed on our survey and put it in perspective with the numbers observed over the past four decades. The 2025 survey will be flown in association with Silvercross Helicopters and with the support of the De Hoop Collection, Denel Overberg Test Range, Grootbos Foundation and private citizens along the route.

The survey is carried out under a permit from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to approach whales, and under specific Marine Protected Area permits from the relevant conservation authorities. TotalEnergies provided the funds for this survey.

Overstrand firefighters take on SA’s toughest challenge

Strength, courage, and unwavering determination – the very qualities that define our everyday heroes – were put to the ultimate test this past weekend as Overstrand Municipality’s finest firefighters stepped into the arena at the prestigious Toughest Firefighter Alive Southern Africa Open Championship 2025.

This event, which was held in George over the weekend (9-11 October), brought together firefighters from across South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia to compete in both individual and team events. The competition tested participants

through a range of physical challenges, including obstacle courses, dummy drags, wall climbs, tower runs, and hose hoisting.

In the spotlight was Jason Griffiths, who delivered an outstanding performance in the highly competitive 18-29 year age group, securing a third place podium finish in the individual category. The other three individual competitors were Marchello Joemat, Cecil Joemat and Fezile Klaas.

Representing Overstrand Fire Services with distinction, the mixed team secured a commendable 4th place finish.

Winde impressed

It was a big day for Hermanus on Friday (10 October), when Western Cape Premier Alan Winde attended the official opening of the newly-upgraded Hermanus Cliff Path.

Hermanus Times published numerous stories on the contentious issue of connecting the two parts of the Cliff Path at Poole’s Bay. Jobre Stassen, spokesperson for the Cliff Path Action Group (CPAG), said it was in August 2018 when they first started investigating this possibility.

“The iconic Hermanus Cliff Path follows the coastline for 11 km, stretching from the New Harbour to Grotto Beach, except for an area almost in the middle of the total length of the path, where it sharply veers away from the sea and detours along the sidewalk of the dangerous, noisy and air-polluted R43/Main Road.”

And now the 800 m footpath joining two halves of a 12 km scenic coastal walk in Hermanus has been completed.

On Friday Winde also made a statement before he even spoke a word arriving by bicycle in Hermanus to attend a crucial presentation on safe cycling infrastructure. The symbolic arrival underscored the day’s mission: transforming the coastal town into a more cycle-friendly destination that prioritizes both resident safety and sustainable tourism.

Team members Willene Thompson, Tyrol Mackenzie, Suzaan Louw, and Phillip Goodman showed great teamwork.

Adam Mars served as this year’s team leader, helping guide the group and encouraging a strong sense of teamwork throughout the event.

Although the challenge has now concluded, the experience continues to build camaraderie and unity – qualities that are important in emergency services and community safety.

Overstrand Executive Mayor Archie Klaas said the municipality is exceptionally proud of its team’s performance, and especially of Jason Griffiths’ outstanding third-place finish.

The municipality salutes all participants and support staff who represented Overstrand with professionalism and heart.

Stassen said after the ceremony on social media: “How fortunate is the Western Cape to have Premier Alan Winde. How many issues does this man tackle and resolve in his big stride; cycle in Hermanus from one meeting to the other. Let’s follow our leader, also with our actions. Thank you, Premier, for joining us in Hermanus, acknowledging the impact of active citizenship from the cliff-path collective. Thanking us for what we’re contributed to society. We thank you for what you do for the entire Western Cape and the opportunities you create for all; let’s grab it and, as a town and province, run with it; let the vision materialise.”

AVDM Consulting Engineers and Alan Bailey Civil Engineering & Construction Pty Ltd were also awarded the prize for “Community Based Project of the Year” at the The South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) national awards in

The session, hosted by Overstrand Municipality and led by renowned international cycling advocate Andrew Wheeldon, focused on developing safer, more accessible cycling routes throughout the region. Wheeldon, whose expertise has guided government infrastructure projects worldwide, presented strategies that could position Hermanus as a model for active transport integration in South African coastal communities.

“This visit supports ongoing efforts to improve active lifestyles, eco-tourism, and safe public infrastructure in the Overstrand,” said the Municipal Manager of the Overstrand, Dean O’Neill.

Court backs Province in taxi dispute

The Western Cape High Court has delivered a significant victory for provincial transport authorities, dismissing taxi association Codeta's urgent interdict application and validating the government's decision to close several contentious minibus taxi routes in the name of commuter safety.

The ruling, handed down on Wednesday, upholds the lawfulness of invoking Section 91 of the National Land Transport Act (NLTA), reinforcing the Western Cape Department of Mobility's authority to implement extraordinary safety measures in the face of ongoing taxi industry disputes.

The court's decision affects ten specific routes that have been at the center of the controversy, including several key connections between Khayelitsha, Somerset West, and surrounding areas. The affected routes span busy corridors such as the 611 Khayelitsha-Somerset West line, the M18 Mfuleni-Somerset West route, and various services connecting communities to major shopping centers including Somerset Mall and Waterstone Mall.

Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku welcomed the judgment, saying that the ruling "reaffirms that our actions are guided by the law and prioritise the protection of lives."

With the court's backing, the department will proceed with its 30-day extraordinary measures, which include the closure of specific routes and ranks. However, time is running short for a negotiated settlement, with only seven days remaining for affected associations and stakeholders to reach a lasting agreement with provincial authorities.

The extraordinary measures represent an escalation in the provincial government's response to what it describes as safety concerns within the minibus taxi industry. The invocation of Section 91 of the NLTA

provides authorities with enhanced powers to suspend operations where passenger safety is deemed at risk.

Minister Sileku has repeatedly stated the need for constructive engagement over confrontation, urging all parties to "prioritise dialogue over disruption." The department's stance reflects growing frustration with what it sees as the industry's preference for costly litigation over collaborative problem-solving.

"The focus must remain on restoring stability and ensuring that no commuter or operator's life is ever placed at risk again," the Minister stated, calling on all parties to "return to the negotiating table and work towards a lasting, peaceful solution."

The court case highlights deeper tensions within the Western Cape's minibus taxi industry, where disputes over routes, territorial rights, and operational procedures have periodically disrupted services and, according to authorities, compromised passenger safety.

The government's decision to invoke Section 91 powers represents one of the most significant interventions in recent years, demonstrating the province's willingness to take decisive action when it believes commuter welfare is at stake.

With seven days remaining before the extraordinary measures period concludes, all eyes are now on whether the affected taxi associations will heed the Minister's call for renewed negotiations. The court's validation of the government's approach strengthens the province's hand in any future discussions, while the ticking clock adds urgency to finding a resolution.

For thousands of commuters who rely on these routes daily, the outcome of these negotiations will determine whether normal services resume or whether alternative arrangements become necessary.

Joint crime ops

Grabouw police conducted a major crime-prevention operation on 7 October, targeting perpetrators of serious violent crimes in the Siyayanzela and Khutsong informal settlements, resulting in multiple arrests related to firearms, drug trafficking and dangerous-weapon violations.

The multi-agency operation brought six law-enforcement units together, including Grabouw police, Public Order Police (POP), K9 units, the District Task Team, TWK Law Enforcement and TWK Traffic in a coordinated effort to combat escalating crime in the area.

During the sweep law-enforcement officers apprehended several suspects on charges related to contraventions of the Firearms Control Act, Drug Trafficking Act and Dangerous Weapons Act, although specific numbers of arrests were not disclosed. Grabouw Police Station commander Col Winston Coetzee emphasised the department’s commitment to community safety through strategic law-enforcement initiatives.

“This operation reflects our determination to ensure the safety and security of our neighbourhoods. The coordinated approach represents an escalation in law-enforcement efforts to address violent crime in areas that have experienced significant security challenges. Police officers are calling on residents to maintain heightened

awareness and report suspicious activities immediately to support ongoing crime prevention efforts.

On 4 October they also successfully concluded a spiritual crime prevention operation marking a new approach to community safety through faith-based intervention.

Coetzee announced completing the operation, which aimed at fostering community safety and harmony through spiritual outreach and community engagement rather than traditional reactive policing methods. The initiative brought an extensive network of community stakeholders, including Grabouw police, the community-policing forum (CPF), emergency medical services (EMS) and neighbourhood-watch (NHW) groups from multiple areas. “This initiative has demonstrated the positive impact of community engagement and spiritual outreach in crime prevention,” Coetzee said. “By working hand-in-hand with spiritual leaders and citizens, we believe we can effectively reduce crime and enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods.” The operation involved collaboration with 16 different organisations and groups, including spiritual leaders from the Grabouw community, various neighbourhood-watch groups from Rooidakke Eagles, Pineview Zone 1, Old Ridge, Nuwedorp and areas including Bosbou, Heights, Lost City and Dennekruin. Security companies STS Security and APS Security also participated.

Winding Up an Estate in South Africa

Winding up a deceased estate in South Africa is a detailed process governed by the Administration of Estates Act 66 of 1965. It ensures that assets are collected, debts are se led, and beneficiaries receive their rightful inheritance. Here is a step-by-step guide to the legal process.

Reporting the Estate: The process begins by reporting the death to the Master of the High Court within 14 days. This includes the death certificate, the will (if available), identity documents, and an inventory of assets.

Appointment of the Executor: The Master appoints an executor to manage the estate and issues a Le er of Executorship, granting legal authority to act. The executor identifies, secures, and values all assets and ensures income due to the deceased is collected.

Se ling Debts and Preparing Accounts: Creditors are notified through adverts in the

Government Gaze e and a local newspaper. The executor then compiles a Liquidation and Distribution (L&D) Account, detailing how the estate will be wound up. The Master reviews this account, which is open for public inspection for 21 days.

Paying Taxes and Distributing Assets: Once approved, all debts and taxes are se led before assets are distributed to beneficiaries. The estate is finalised a er property transfers and account closures.

Professional Guidance Ma ers: Because of its complexity, it’s advisable to appoint a qualified and experienced executor. Professional oversight ensures the process is efficient, transparent, and fully compliant with the law. Solomons back in seat

Municipal officials, residents and ratepayers were stunned when the controversial Wilfred Solomons-Johannes reported to the Theewaterskloof municipal offices in Caledon on Monday as Director of Services. This decision was taken at a special in-committee council meeting on Thursday 9 October.

The news has been met with concern, after plenty of controversy surrounding Solomons-Johannes the last few years. A source also confirmed he had returned to the offices on Monday.

TROUBLED APPOINTMENT

Solomons-Johannes was appointed TWK’s municipal manager in August 2023, after acting in the role since April. The decision to appoint Shim permanently was taken at a full-council sitting on 27 July that year. At the time there were also rumours Solomons-Johannes did not have the appropriate qualifications required.

On 3 April 2023 a special council in-committee meeting was held to discuss the outcome of an investigation into an allegation of misconduct levelled against Solomons-Johannes.

This was commissioned following questions on his appointment and the matter has also been before the courts.

A report alleging further misconduct that raised the eyebrows was served before council in January this year.

Owing to the seriousness of the allegation the council appointed an independent investigator to

probe the claims, allegations that reportedly transpired between 17 and 30 May 2024 (“TWK in dire straits”, Hermanus Times, 9 April 2025).

SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS

In the most recent special council in-committee meeting on 9 October the findings of the investigation were submitted to council. These allegations include, among others, purported abuse of authority, financial misconduct and perjury.

According to the meeting’s agenda the investigator’s report acknowledged that SolomonsJohannes acted bona fide in accordance with his legal and fiduciary duties to protect the interests of the municipality. The agenda also stated that any

conclusions regarding the employment of Solomons-Johannes or allegations, such as perjury, remain subject to judicial determination. At the meeting the DA’s coalition partner, GOOD, allegedly sided with the ANC, which is apparently why Solomons-Johannes is back in his seat.

According to John Michels, NCC leader in the Theewaterskloof Municipality and former Deputy Mayor, the municipality is facing political and administrative instability. “[The DA’s] coalition partner turned their backs on them and voted with the ANC to bring this official back, that speaks to the instability that we find ourselves in.

“Service delivery is suffering and close to R2 million has already been spent in legal costs against this official, yet he [will be] back in his position.”

On enquiry, Solomons-Johannes responded via WhatsApp. “I will give comment through my lawyers when I receive an official letter. Notwithstanding whether I receive the letter or not, I am reporting for duty on Monday.

“TWK must disclose their unlawful and malicious action driven by propaganda and a campaign in their media statement. There will be consequences, and they will pay for what they have done to me; to destroy my name, reputation and career with costs.”

When Hermanus Times reached out to TWK for comment, the municipal manager Walter Hendricks said in a short statement: “The administration will not discuss any human resources matter in the media.”

TWK has recovery plan

It was once a thriving municipality characterised by economic stability, but today the Theewaterskloof Municipality is not only bankrupt, but they also struggle to deliver basic services to their people.

Some residents believe that the problems started with the coalition between GOOD, ANC and the PA, while others say it started with leadership – as of 2021, there have been five mayors and four municipal managers. Today the DA’s Lincoln de Bruyn is the mayor.

In November 2024 the municipality was put under financial administration and last week the Western Cape Government approved the Financial Recovery Plan (FRP) for Theewaterskloof Municipality to address its financial and service delivery challenges. According to the Western Cape Government the municipality’s financial position has declined sharply since early 2023. “In the 2022-’23 financial year, Theewaterskloof collected over 95% of planned revenue and ended the year with a surplus.

But by March 2023, governance instability and obligations exceeding available cash began to expose deep weaknesses. By August 2024, the collection rate had fallen to 64%, well below the National Treasury norm. This, as cash and cash equivalents, dropped from R70,96 million in August 2023 to R43,28 million a year later. Over the same period, commitments rose to R43,73 million,” they stated in a press release.

On 8 October the DA in the Theewaterskloof municipal area issued a press release where they welcome the Western Cape

Government’s Financial Recovery Plan (FRP) to rescue TWK from financial ruin. “For the past few years, the PA/ANC/GOOD coalition has driven the municipality into the ground as result of mismanagement of funds and looting. During this period basic service delivery suffered greatly,” Nicholas Myburgh, DA Constituency Head of Theewaterskloof, said. According to Myburgh within two years the municipality went from a financial surplus to financial crises. “Eskom debt grew to over R50 million, infrastructure backlogs ballooned and there are severe shortages of staff.”

It is also no secret that there are currently investigations into the disappearance of R41 million in disaster relief funds, as well as millions in irregular, unauthorised, and fruitless and wasteful expenditure that have been initiated.

“With the FRP cash flow will be restored, governance and institutional weaknesses addressed and service delivery measures strengthened,” the DA said.

‘Tuin is my passie’

Sy kweek selfs groente by haar huis.

Women learn plumbing skills

Mitzi Buys

The Bill of Rights in the South African Constitution considers the access to “sufficient water” a fundamental human right. It is, however, equally important to curb water wastage, which often occurs through leaking taps and toilets in residences as well as commercial properties.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), in partnership with Theewaterskloof Municipality (TWKM) and housing-fixture manufacturer Lixil, offered its first week-long basic-plumbing course for unemployed youth in Caledon in February. (“Youth learn plumbing skills”, Hermanus Times, 19 February 2025). A group of about 50 young people from Grabouw graduated from the DWS’s second basic-plumbing training course. Of sgnificance was that 45 of these young people were women.

The training programme, which is spearheaded by the DWS and TWKM, aims to address water wastage by equipping local young people with the knowledge and expertise to tackle basic plumbing challenges.

This initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen water conservation through essential skills development.

Solile Somawo, Western Cape Head of Capacity Building and Support, said: “This

municipality (TWKM) has very high water losses, and hence we came up with this intervention, among others. We hope the municipality will use the services of these graduates effectively to lessen the water they use and save money. This initiative is designed to create a ‘water-conservation army’, a skilled group of individuals who can help prevent water loss and support the municipality in maintaining water efficiency.”

The young people were not only given practical training, but were also equipped with the business side of plumbing in order to work for themselves since the municipality would not be able to employ all of them. Soon after completing the course the class got its first job from the department, when a team of 14 women was chosen to fix the toilets of the municipality, which had been leaking for a while. The team was compensated for the job immediately and, according to Somawo, the aim was to show what they could expect once they started their own business.

Such an initiative not only empowers youth with employable skills but also directly contributes to water-conservation efforts in the region. This training programme will also be offered in Villiersdorp in the next few months.

Diabetes-2 verdubbel in Suid-Afrika in 6 jaar

Volgens dr.

Belangrike risikofaktore vir katarakte sluit in diabetes, rook, oogbeserings of chirurgie. Kontak Right to Sight by righttosight.org vir nog inligting.

Partnership restores sight

For Dora Daniels of Grabouw the world suddenly became crystal clear again after two years of waiting and struggling with deteriorating vision. She was among 20 fortunate residents of the Overberg who had their eyesight restored through cataract surgeries during a remarkable three-day healthcare outreach that brought hope and healing directly to their doorstep.

The transformative initiative, which took place from 25 to 27 September at Eerste River Hospital, represents the power of collaboration between academia, government and community organisations.

Led by Stellenbosch University in partnership with the University of the Western Cape and students from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, the programme delivered far more than just eye surgery. It brought comprehensive healthcare services to hundreds of residents in the Theewaterskloof region.

“I struggled with poor eyesight for years and waited two long years for the cataract surgery,” said Daniels. “Today I am so happy I can finally see clearly!” Her joy echoes that of 19 other patients who experienced the life-changing gift of restored vision, while approximately 200 community members benefited from dental-health services including extractions, cleanings, fillings, and screenings. The outreach extended beyond medical procedures to include eye screenings and spectacle fittings for local children, ultrasound training for ten regional doctors, and even infrastructure improvements at Caledon Hospital.

Undergraduate health sciences students from SU joined Right to Care community health workers on home visits to 14 elderly residents of Knoflokskraal, a Khoi agricultural settlement. Al-Imdaad Foundation

also provided food parcels to these households.

“We are grateful to Western Cape Government: Health and Wellness, our partners, and the communities of Theewaterskloof,” said Dr Therese Fish, Vice Dean: Clinical Services and Social Impact for SU’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, “as this initiative embodies a critical component of our university's vision, to serve society. Their inspiration for the event was to serve as they learn, and to learn as they serve.”

Beyond health-care support, a group of postgraduate engineering students and staff members from SU contributed to minor infrastructure improvements at Caledon Hospital. They repaired lighting and equipment (including two blood-pressure monitors and a theatre bed) and addressed other small maintenance issues that improved the hospital’s functionality. “We’re

so happy just to make a difference here,” said Mr Peter Conradie, an engineering employee at SU. “It’s also the first time for the students to experience working inside a hospital. SU students also participated in observational ward rounds at Caledon Hospital, where they witnessed real-time clinical workflows, engaged with hospital staff and deepened their understanding of patient care in a district hospital setting.”

There were also various activities aimed at strengthening the local health system, including point-of-care ultrasound training, clinicians-as-teachers training, infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship training, and emergency care in-situation simulation in clinical settings.

“This event demonstrates what can be achieved when government, academia, and civil society work together,” said Dr Trevor Pillay, Theewaterskloof Subdistrict Medical Manager.

Fire meets finesse

Imagine the cathedral-like resonance of classical guitar strings meeting the thunderous heartbeat of flamenco footwork, where centuries-old traditions collide in a spectacular fusion of sound and movement. This is ¡Pulso! – a breathtaking artistic collaboration that promises to ignite the senses and transport audiences on an extraordinary cultural odyssey.

Classical guitarists Nina Fourie-Gouws and Christiaan Carelse join artistic forces with Flamenco dance sensation Ché Adams in ¡Pulso! This visually and auditory captivating production combines the passion, fire and intensity of authentic contemporary Flamenco dance with the rich, complex and sensuous sounds of Classical Guitar. The audience will be transported across three millennia on a journey from majestic cathedrals and pastoral landscapes to the bustling nightclubs and cafés of South America and Spain.

The formidable trio breaks down the boundaries between the melodious, virtuosic, and structured world of classical guitar and the expressive, explosive and highly improvisational nature of flamenco dancing. The programme includes works by Albéniz, Boccherini, Brouwer, de Falla, Domeniconi, Dyens and Granados. This event hosted by OVERSTRAND ARTS/

KUNSTE (OAK) will take place on Sunday 19 October in the Civic Auditorium, at 15:30. Established in 2023, ¡Pulso! featured on kykNET’s Fiësta, nominated for a Woordfees award as best instrumental production and has performed as part of the sold-out productions at the Toyota Woordfees, Baxter theatre, Classics for All Festival in Greyton, and the Erin Hall, Swellendam Music Society and Oude Westhof Concert series, “delivering a high-energy blend of virtuosity, evocative and sensuous lyricism and imaginative programming resulting in a thrilling new way to experience chamber music in the 21st century”. Tickets are R250 per person and available from René du Plooy, on 082 940 4238 or at renedup@telkomsa.net. Student prices are R80.

The MKKK will officially launch at 20:00 on Friday 31 October with award-winning playwright Mike van Graan’s political satire My Fellow South Africans, featuring Kim Blanché Adonis.

Diagnose kry inwoner nie onder

Oktober is Borskankerbewusmakingsmaand.

Nou is ek klaar met my operasies.

My geloof het my deurgedra.

“Daar is altyd hoop.”

This first-of-its-kind initiative brings golf – traditionally an exclusive sport –directly to students from six Overberg schools: Botrivier Primary, Lukhanyo Primary, Mount Pleasant Primary, Hawston Primary, Hawston Secondary, and Ohayiya Secondary. For the past four months, learners have been attending weekly coaching sessions, mastering not only golf fundamentals but developing crucial life skills including focus, problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork. The initiative tackles significant challenges facing Overberg communities, including high poverty levels, unemployment, and limited access to extracurricular activities. By utilising community spaces, the academy creates new possibilities for young people.

“This initiative is part of our outreach programme,” explains Sharon Sleigh, General Manager at Hermanus Golf Club. “Golf offers learners from under-resourced communities access to facilities and skills they wouldn’t normally experi-

ence. We aim to expand this programme to include more schools across the Overberg as it grows.”

Jessica Batts, Citizen Leader Lab facilitator in the Winelands, emphasises the broader vision: “Citizen Leader Lab’s work is rooted in strengthening school leadership and building partnerships that create better opportunities for our youth. This initiative demonstrates what’s possible when schools,

Principals become leaders

Business leaders with a wide set of skills, expertise and wisdom recently got together with principals from various Overberg schools to celebrate completing a 12-month long “Leaders for Education” programme offered by Citizen Leader Lab.

Nine representatives of businesses in Bredasdorp, Napier, Riviersonderend, Genadendal, Bot River, Grabouw and Hermanus and principals of Riviersonderend Primary School, De Heide Primary School, Augulhas School of Skills, Lukhayno Primary School, Qhayiya Senior Secondary, Emil Weder High School and Groenberg Senior Secondary School, Bot River Primary School and Gansbaai Academia gathered at Hermanus Golf Club. Senior

officials of the Overberg Education District also attended as did staff of Citizen Leader Lab. Principals and business leaders were honoured for the successful completion.

This leadership and development programme also provides support to principals, said Jessica Batts of Citizen Leader Lab, which for 15 years has formed 2 080 partnerships, impacted 43 137 teachers and 1 586 110 learners nationally.

“We strive to support principals in developing their confidence, skills and competence in leading change in a complex organisation in a time of turbulence.” The principals and business leaders engage, and the former return and create strong learning ecosystems.

Matrieks skryf amper

Saterdag speel Botrivier ’n wegwedstryd teen Van Rhynsdorp Eagles.

Overberg BMX stars shine at SA BMX Championship

Overberg BMX Club riders delivered a spectacular performance at the South African National BMX Cup 5 & 6 and South African BMX Championship, bringing home a treasure trove of medals and earning coveted official SA rankings at Kempton Park BMX Club on 4-5 October.

The two-day championship event showcased the exceptional talent emerging from the Overberg region, with local riders competing against the nation’s best BMX athletes from across South Africa. “During the SA Cup competitions, Overberg’s rising stars proved their mettle on the challenging Kempton Park track. Rickus Muller demonstrated remarkable consistency, claiming two bronze medals and establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with in his category. Not to be outdone, young talent Hosea Kloppers delivered a standout performance, securing both a silver and bronze medal that highlighted his rapidly developing racing prowess and competitive spirit,” said the chairperson of the Overberg BMX Club George Kloppers. The South African BMX Championship

brought even greater glory for Overberg riders, with five athletes earning official SA numbers – a prestigious recognition that places them among the country’s top-ranked competitors in their respective categories.

“Leading the charge was Hosea Kloppers, who claimed the SA6 ranking in the 7 years boys category, while Rickus Muller secured SA4 in the highly competitive Cruiser Men class. Aaron de Klerk joined Muller in the Cruiser Men rankings with his SA6 position.

Jesse Rademeyer showcased impressive skills to earn SA3 in the 14 years boys class, while LJ Olivier rounded out the success stories with his SA6 ranking in the 15 years boys category. “Special mention goes to Ingrid Youell, who earned the top SA1 ranking despite her race being unfortunately cancelled due to insufficient entries in her class. Her qualification for the championship demonstrates her exceptional skill level.”

According to Kloppers the outstanding results reflect the growing strength of BMX racing in the Overberg region and the dedication of these young athletes to their sport.

Swart rugbynaweek

Overberg riders Aaron de Klerk, Hosea Kloppers and LJ Olivier. delivered a spectacular performance.
