“More than 90 years old, Communicare is a leading social and affordable housing provider in the Western Cape with increasingly diversified property holdings. Our mission to provide sustainable affordable housing is supported by our social-enterprise business model, which allows us to grow while making social impact."
This according to Communicare, which owned House McMillan in Hermanus. Now, like with the elderly of the former Paradise Park, residents have to look for other places to stay since the premises have been sold. The fact that the elderly have to move has sent shockwaves through the community.
Some of the Facebook posts reflect residents’ feelings regarding the McMillan situation. On 3 September a Facebook User wrote: “Something must be done about the situation of all those vulnerable elderly and disabled people who are renting at McMillan House and signed a Social Housing Lease with the Communicare NPC when they moved in many years ago. Some of them have received letters saying they have to evacuate by the end of September and others by the end of October 2025. Now where are all those elderly people going

to find a dwelling in Hermanus that they can afford on their monthly Sassa grant income?” The well-known estate agent Jane Day also raised her concern about this situation on her Facebook page: “I have been to Hermanus Times twice, I have been contacted by the Cape Times and have been to two meetings where it was discussed that attorney actions were in place to try and help the very elderly people living at McMillan House and who have been renewing their lease agreements through Communicare for longer than 10 years.
“It is really a shame that the most vulnerable people in the community of Hermanus are treated this way, and most of them receive only a Sassa old-age or disability grant from the government. What does one do? I am prepared to march if it brings attention! I wrote to the Mayor, but she resigned.
“I am told these people have to be out at end of this month and end of next month.” Another concerned resident whose son lives at McMillan and also receives a state pension also visited Hermanus Times to share her concerns. “My son lives with my ex-husband at House McMillan and they now have to find another place to stay. AfriForum gryp in oor TWK

“There is no room in Hermanus for them and especially no rental places catering for people who receive only state pensions.”
Meanwhile, the one-bedroom homes at McMillan House are being advertised for R725 000 while most of the residents still have no other place to go.
According to Dev Moretti, PR and Communication Officer of Communicare, McMillan was sold as a tenanted property.
“This was announced to the tenants in November 2024 during an on-site tenant engagement and has been affirmed in follow-up communications from both Communicare and the purchaser. The purchaser took early occupation in May 2025 and the property was transferred in August 2025. Tenants were given the opportunity to continue their tenancy or become owners of available units.”
The PR officer also said Communicare did not engage in 10-year lease terms and leases did not prohibit landlords from selling properties.
“Engagements with tenants started in 2024 and with any changes at properties the tenants have the alternative of applying for available properties that Communicare own. Tenants who decided to take the offer up to rent or buy from the new owner would have needed to enter into an agreement with the new owner.”

A good Samaritan’s quick-thinking actions and use of a pink NSRI buoy saved the life of an unidentified woman who was swept away by strong rip currents after falling into the ocean in the Old Harbour in Hermanus over the weekend.
If not for Debra Tanfield, who was on a visit to Hermanus with a friend, the woman might not have been recovered from the water in time to save her life before divers of the NSRI Hermanus arrived on the scene on Saturday 6 September.
Debra recounted that she and her friend were walking along the road above the Old Harbour when they noticed the woman drifting near the rock wall separating the small bay from the open sea. “She wasn’t waving her arms or showing any sign of being in distress,” Debra related.
By the time they reached the deck of the restaurant in the harbour, the woman had been washed closer to shore. It was only then that Debra realised that the woman was in actual fact drowning. What shocked her most, said Debra, was the fact that people in the vicinity were continuing to eat and drink unperturbed by the near-fatal scene playing off in front of them.
“One man stopped his son from going
in, which you can understand, because the current was obviously stronger than it seemed. Another was just standing there in the water, trying to grab a hold of the woman’s arm. I just thought I would never be able to live with myself if I didn’t do something.”
A short video shows how Debra pulls off her shoes and wades through the water to reach the woman. Once Debra grabbed a hold of the woman and pulled her closer to shore, others sprang into action to assist her in getting the woman out of the water.
“I turned her on her side and tried to open her mouth so she could expel the water but her jaw had locked. Her stomach was bloated from the water. An Italian doctor who was there came and helped to put her in the recovery position. Eventually her jaw relaxed and she started breathing,” Debra recalled.
Soon after, NSRI Hermanus crew members and paramedics arrived on the scene and took over.
Lando Lombard, NSRI Hermanus Deputy Station Commander, said the NSRI received the distress call at 13:53 while busy conducting routine training. The rescue craft Leonard Smith and Rescue 17 Bravo immediately diverted to the Old Harbour following the reports of a drowning in progress. In addition to the two vessels one NSRI vehicle and paramedics with the Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical
Services also raced to the scene.
“On arrival on the scene we found a local female (50) safe on the shore in the care of an Italian doctor who happened to be on the scene,” Lombard stated. “The casualty was treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms and she was transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition.”
Lombard reported that a German man who had recently relocated to Cape Town and was on holiday in Hermanus at the time, grabbed a second pink rescue buoy to assist.
“The swift action of the two good Samaritans that saved the woman’s life is commended,” said Lombard.
In a separate incident on Saturday 6 September a man lost his life after the vessel he was on capsized at the Breede River Mouth at Witsand. Despite valiant efforts by the duty crews of three different NSRI stations, the police as well as WC Government Health EMS, the 53-year-old man’s life could not be saved.
Craig Lambinon, the NSRI spokesperson, reported that the NSRI Witsand, NSRI Agulhas and NSRI Stilbaai duty crews were activated at 08:20 following eyewitness reports about the ski-boat with four crew on board - a dad (52), his two teenage daughters (17 and 14) from Robertson, Western Cape, and a male friend (35) - that had capsized in the vicinity of the sand bar in the Breede River Mouth while appearing to be
More arrested in big Stilbaai cocaine case

Two men from the Hermanus area are the latest to have been arrested in connection with an incident in July 2024 in which police confiscated cocaine worth an estimated R252 million in Stilbaai Harbour. Lt-Col Siyabulela Vukubi, spokesperson for the Hawks, confirmed Dicky Benzien and Renaldo Beukes were arrested on 7 August and appeared in court the following day on charges of dealing in drugs. “On 19 August they were released on bail. The next court appearance is scheduled for 8 September,” he said. “A total of eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the matter, with five in custody and three out on bail.”
The arrests stem from an incident on 19 July 2024 when members of the Stilbaai police and officials of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment seized 14 bags containing 400 bricks of cocaine when they responded to information about a vessel suspected of transporting narcotics. After a high-speed chase with a Toyota Pajero towing a rubberduck the officials managed to stop the vehicle. The drugs were discovered hidden in compartments on the vessel. The rubber duck as well as the vehicle and drugs were confiscated.
The police also managed to arrest the two occupants of the vehicle, Marko Minic and Alan Bushby, who had tried to flee the scene. Further investigations led to the arrests of Marko Fourie and Josip Ivanovic, a Russian national. Jordan Brandon Cullinghworth, 29, was granted bail of R120 000 after he turned himself
over to the police earlier this year.
The six suspects made a brief appearance in the Riversdal Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 26 August. The case against the men was postponed to 8 September when Benzien and Beukes were expected to appear appear along with their co-accused.

exiting the river mouth.
A local fishing vessel, with the NSRI crew on board, launched to assist with the rescue operation while the crew of the Jolly Roger, a rigid hull inflatable boat, also set off with relatives and friends of the people in distress. They managed to rescue all four casualties from the water. CPR efforts commenced on the man from Robertson who was found to be unconscious and unresponsive.
“After all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted sadly the man was declared deceased,” said Lambinon.
“The man’s two daughters and the male friend were not injured. The casualty boat has been recovered. The body of the deceased man was taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.”
Lambinon expressed condolences with the deceased man’s family and commended the skipper and crew of the Jolly Rodger as well as the local fishing vessel for their swift actions in rescuing the four casualties from the water.

Voëlklip troop visits more frequent
The Voëlklip baboon troop has been venturing into town with increasing frequency in recent weeks, prompting wildlife-management officials to adapt their strategies and implement additional measures to protect both residents and the animals.
According to the Baboon Management Programme the increased urban activity stems from recent changes in troop dynamics and readily available food sources within residential areas. A roam-
ing male baboon recently challenged the troop’s dominant male, causing occasional group splits and behavioural changes that have persisted even after the challenger’s defeat. According to the Municipal Manager, Dean O'Neill, the primary factor keeping the troop in town was the abundance of food. “Contributing factors include fruit trees in residential areas, residents placing birdseed and other wildlife foodstuff, and some community members deliberately feeding the baboons.
“The constant availability of food keeps the troop in town for extended periods,” O’Neill explained, “making it extremely difficult to move them out again, even with intervention tools.”
Residents are also reminded that feeding wildlife, including baboons and birds, violates the Cape Nature Ordinance of 1974. This practice significantly complicates management efforts and poses risks to both human and animal safety.
The Baboon Management team, O’Neill said, continues deploying proven deterrent methods, including bangers and screamers as audible deterrents along the town’s edge, plus primers and gel blasters to encourage the troop to return to their natural habitat. “Screamers and bangers are used between the town and the mountain range when weather conditions are favorable,” he said. “These tools help move the troop up the cliffs and over the mountain, with no more than 3-4 used at any given time.”
The Overstrand Municipality also implemented several improvements to strengthen management capabilities:
• Paintball markers: The Overstrand Municipality has acquired paintball markers, with staff training currently being finalised to meet permit and standard operating procedure requirements.
• Additional staff: Approval has been granted for recruiting additional personnel, with the municipality actively seeking experienced baboon monitors to support the existing trained team.
• Enhanced training: The current team will receive additional and refresher training to adapt to recent changes in troop behavior, with experienced staff from the western region providing field support in coming weeks.
• Targeted inspections: The team will conduct “blitz inspections” to identify food sources throughout town, including fruit trees, bird feeders, and non-baboon-

proof bins. Educational meetings will follow with affected residents.
• Municipal tree management: Plans are underway to trim fruit trees selectively on municipal property that currently attract the troop into urban areas.
The management strategy focuses on keeping the Voëlklip troop away from urban areas for extended periods, benefiting both residents and baboons. Officials acknowledge that changes in behaviour, troop dynamics and food availability are natural occurrences requiring adaptive management approaches.
“Flexibility is essential for effective and responsible baboon management,” O’Neill said. “The management team continues to adapt to these changes as part of our commitment to sustainable, humane and scientifically-informed solutions.”
The previous management company’s practice of moving troops well over the mountain and deeper into reserves, while remaining within natural home ranges, has created larger buffers between troops and urban areas, improving overall management effectiveness. As the situation evolves the Baboon Management Programme maintains its focus on evidence-based practices while working closely with the community to ensure both human safety and animal welfare in the Voëlklip area.
A 3-in-one month observed
It’s that special time of year when Arbour Month, Tourism Month and Heritage Month occur at the same time, in September.
With this in mind Overstrand Municipality hosted a community cleanup and tree planting at the Zwelihle Sport Grounds on Saturday 6 September. The National Tourism Minister, Patricia de Lille, joined the initiative that served to highlight the importance of collective responsibility in creating cleaner and healthier living spaces.
Saturday’s event formed part of an oversight visit to the Overberg District Municipality by national departments, including the South African Local Government Association (Salga) and key stakeholders.
The whole idea is to boost land reform, support community development and
drive a national initiative for cleaner, greener spaces through active community participation.
The Department of Tourism congratulated Overstrand Municipality on winning first place in the Western Cape Municipal Waste Management Recognition Programme last month, awarded by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.
This accolade recognises Overstrand as the top-performing municipality in the province for its innovative waste management systems, recycling efforts and compliance with environmental regulations.
Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill thanked the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment for the donation of 10 trees that were planted in Zwelihle over the weekend.
Heathley Plaatjies, Divind Alexander, Jacobus Groenewald and Denner Adams of Overstrand Municipality’s parks team with Masithandaze Falitenjwa and Patric Mdale of DFFE, who ensured the trees arrived on time for the tree planting at the Zwelihle Sport Grounds this past weekend.

“This journey is not just about a crown - it’s about using the platform to make a difference.”
So says Samantha Gillion, a businesswoman and author from Hawston, who has advanced to the finals of the Mrs South Africa 2025 competition.
Gillion, who published the book Love Says at the end of 2021, said even though she had never been interested in beauty pageants as a young girl she decided to enter the Mrs SA competition because it provides the perfect platform for her to empower women on their journey “to discovering their God-given confidence” and to inspire them “to live boldy, love deeply and lead with purpose”.
“The Mrs SA competition is a really amazing platform where we get to meet exceptional women who are so diverse and inspiring. It shows that women have a purpose in every season of their life. I am deeply passionate about empowering women to discover their God-given confidence and embrace their true worth in Jesus.
“I love writing, reading, mentoring young women and spending meaningful time with my family. My life’s mission is to inspire others to live boldly, love deeply and lead with purpose.”
Being one of the top 30 finalists, Gillion said, entails a lot of hard work. “Official sponsors of the competition provide their products and services to the finalists and we have to promote it.”
Following months of preparation, charity work and public appearances she
is now preparing for one of her biggest steps yet; hosting a fundraising masterclass in aid of the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), while also vying for the prestigious Mrs South Africa People’s Choice Award.
The mother of two explained she was inspired to host a fundraiser in aid of Cansa in memory of her aunt, who died at a young age after valiantly fighting breast cancer and also her mother-inlaw Christine Gillion who has beaten the dreaded disease twice.
“I have seen how hard it can be on the patients and their families,” she stated.
The event, titled “Crowned in Confidence – Walking Fully Loved”, will be held at Benguela Cove Wine estate on Friday 3 October from 09:00 to 12:00 and will feature the well-known speaker and image consultant Aletté Winckler.
Gillion will also share details of her journey and her book with guests. For every copy of her book that is sold at the event one copy will be donated to a young woman.
“This journey is not just about a crown; it’s about using the platform to make a difference. Through this event we’re raising funds for Cansa and creating an empowering space for women to embrace confidence and walk fully loved.”
Tickets can be booked online at www. primeperceptions.co.za. The ticket price includes light refreshments.
You can also support Gillion by voting for her in the People’s Choice Awards category by sending an SMS with the name Samantha Gillion to 47587. Each sms costs R3 (free smses do not apply).
Vrouedag alte vrolik

Memoir of interesting childhood
Mitzi Buys
A brown envelope inside a blue suitcase was the trigger for well-known Botrivier author Barbara Townsend to write her third book, The Colour of Flying: a childhood memoir.
On clearing out her mother’s belongings after her death she found a brown envelope containing her childhood drawings and some letters she had sent to her mother at the back of a cupboard. “I put the brown envelope inside the suitcase. I thought I couldn’t deal with it, but it was time. This as well as photos, artefacts and conversations I had with my brother when he was dying were all triggers, and once I started it just came pouring out.”
At the recent Botrivier launch of the book Townsend’s daughter Catherine asked her what it meant to write a childhood memoir as an adult. “What it means for me is going back to a time when the events I described here happened,” Townsend said, “and that was between the ages of 3½ and 10 years old. You can call them seminal, perhaps traumatic, perhaps exciting or momentous events and they shaped my life. That is why I wrote it, because I felt that in those years the things that happened made me who I am. “I started in this kind of formal adult way of writing and all of a sudden there was this child’s voice that said, ‘Oh no. Listen to me. Write it from my point of view!’ Whenever I sat down to write, the child’s voice came, and that’s what I wrote down, possibly just as well, because it made it bearable to write about some things that were painful because children see things in eccentric, innocent humorous ways and so it was a very comfortable journey back into my life.”
Townsend read several extracts from the book, some of them very humorous, others very poignant.
Several women feature prominently throughout the memoir, Townsend’s mother, for instance. “My mother was a super-intelligent, driven and independent woman. She left to save herself. What a terrible price to pay.” There was Auntie B, an incredible, selfless woman who accepted and loved three clever, headstrong, independent children. An unnamed woman (Sister So and So) was not kind, but Townsend found refuge with beloved nanny Annie Khaje, who called her Missy B. Townsend said she always stood outside her father’s office door, listening. “I was
always listening. I was always waiting outside doors to hear news about my mother. If she changed her mind. If she was coming back. I was always waiting, always listening. I did a lot of eavesdropping.” In this way she also learnt wonderful words, many of them medical terms, as her father was a doctor. “My dad’s big thing was about educating us. He believed in good education and sound moral values about truth. He was a very good provider and we were safe, but he always reminded us that he was the captain of the ship.”
In the book Townsend recalls many of her childhood incidents with humour. “It is a kind of inherent humour as a survival tactic. It has never left me.
“It is an intergenerational book. In the hands of a granny or a caring teacher it can be used to help a child in similar, or other, circumstances to find their voice.”
Townsend still has contact with some of the childhood friends who feature in her book. One, a nursery-school friend, is now in Oxford, and Townsend plans to hand him a copy of the book.

Schools boast new science labs
Science teaching and learning at schools in the Overberg got a massive boost when Hawston Primary School, Fisherhaven Academy and Bissetsdrift Academy recently celebrated the official opening of brand-new science laboratories.
The construction of the Science Teaching and Learning Centres was made possible through the partnership between Advancing Knowledge NonProfit Company (AK NPC), Garden Cities Archway Foundation and the Western Cape Education Department which aims to support teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects at schools. The four new Science TLCs that were opened on Monday 25 August, brings the total of new Science TLCs constucted at Western Cape Schools since 2011 to 118.
Other schools in the Overberg that have already benefited from this programme include Emil Weder Secondary in Genadendal, De Heide Primary in Bredasdorp, De Rust Futura Academy and Groenberg Secondary in Grabouw.
The construction of the Science TLCs is an extension of the curriculum support of teachers and learners provided by AK NPC and serve as reward to committed science teachers, school management and learners.
The support comes, firstly, in the form of training for committed and passionate science teachers to improve the culture of science teaching and secondly through interesting and stimulating science
projects such as science clubs, competitions and such to improve the culture of science learning. The Science Teaching and Learning Centres serve as the hub in which the cultures of science teaching and science learning can be incubated to prepare learners for the future challenges in STEM.
Prof Shaheed Hartley, Director of Advancing Knowledge Non-Profit Company (AK NPC), stated: “We have to start with the basics in terms of supporting teachers to have the confidence to teach inquiry-based science with an advanced level of understanding, knowledge and skills. Similarly, we have to be creative in providing learners with opportunities that will draw their interest and willingness to develop the critical inquiry skills to participate in STEM activities. Having a confident and knowledgeable science teacher in an enabling environment provided by the Science Teaching and Learning Centres is an excellent start.”
John Matthews, CEO of Garden Cities, added: “The Science TLC project is one of the vehicles through which we as a corporate organisation invest in meeting South Africa’s future human resource needs in STEM, especially within a 4IR environment.”
Organisations and corporates that would like to contribute to this initiative to empower and capacitate science practitioners to build a critical mass of future STEM students, are encouraged to make contact with the head of AK NPC, Hartley, at shartley@skatt.co.za or 083 793 0436.

Hawston-skole vind baat by skenking van sportklere

Tobias
Suiwer Goud – Die Lig antwoord hy:
se eerste boek is getiteld Suiwer Goud en op ’n vraag van Hermanus Times oor die titel Suiwer Goud – Die Lig antwoord hy: “Met my geboorte, soos my moeder, Emily, dit aan my oorgedra het, was daar net nadat ek gebore is, ’n lig in die kamer. Dit is ook waarom sy so met my saamgestap het met my rugby. Sy’t altyd gesê iets groots gaan met my gebeur en sy moet my beskerm.”
vertel hy het ’n droom gehad was
Tobias vertel hy het ’n droom gehad waarin hy saam met Naas Botha rugby speel. “Dit was net voordat ek vir SuidAfrika gekeur is.

Kontak hom by 072 113 9115.
