Dulandi Leech, spokesperson for the DA on Finance in the Free State Legislature, said information received painted a dire picture

“Following an inquiry about the measures to be taken to prevent a similar situation at the end of the current financial year, the MEC for Education stated that third-party penalties would be paid depending on the cash flow, demonstrating a disregard for proper planning and the misuse of taxpayers’ money

“It was an amazing experience I met people from different countries, learned about new cultures, and gained a lot of confidence It also taught me to stay humble and grateful, no matter where I go ”

Nadia attributes her success to the great support and motivation she receives

“My dad and a few close friends support and motivate me the most They always remind me to stay focused, believe in myself, and never give up Their encouragement means a lot and keeps me going, even when things get tough”

She got the ticket to the international contest after winning the Miss Teen Universe South Africa Free State contest

Nadia’s father, Mpumelelo Latyeba, said he was overwhelmed by his daughter’s achievement internationally

“I feel so blessed and I am so happy It is only by the grace of God; I always pray for my children that God will help them to make the right choices If you look outside, teenagers are not listening to their parents anymore they do things that are not right,” said Latyeba

“I am happy because it was something she has been longing for, and she achieved her milestone Secondly, it will open doors for her wherever she goes, including Miss Universe I always tell her to remain focused, finish her school, and go to tertiary education to further her studies and grow in life”

Provincial department of education in great bind

“The R2,5 million is more than most people's homes and could have been used to aid classrooms, teachers, and learners It is unacceptable that mismanagement of funds, as well as poor planning, continue to lead to such unnecessary expenses These large amounts of wasteful expenditure cannot be shrugged off as ‘small amounts,’ ” said Leech

According to Leech, this happened due to the department being underfunded “There has been a huge cut in education funding,” she said

Leech said the party welcomes intervention by the Minister of Education, Siviwe Gwarube, which include commitment to working with provincial finance departments, as well as the Treasury, to alleviate the financial pressures facing education

“The minister has already identified the problem across all provinces Minister Gwarube has further advocated that investment in education should be increased and that it should receive a larger portion of the national budget, while also encouraging the public and private

hands with the government and to prioritise education as the bedrock of the future of our South Africa

“Better planning needs to take place We propose that no new infrastructure projects be embarked on until all current projects have successfully been completed and handed over

“Disciplinary actions need to be taken against employees, especially teachers, who have been suspended to ensure that two salaries do not have to be paid for one teaching position,” said Leech

Public urged to counter GBV

The Free State Department of Social Development has launched a 90-day Gender-based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) campaign aimed at mobilising the public to act

Launched on Wednesday, 1 October, the action programme is prompted by the never-ending scourge Mathabo Hlalele (formerly Leeto), MEC for Social Development, is leading the drive and said the awareness drive was significant, arising from the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster meeting held in April this year

“The JCPS Ministerial meeting reflected on the magnitude of GBVF in South Africa and reaffirmed government’s strategy in dealing with the plight in the country through increasing communication, awareness and community mobilisation”

Although Pres Cyril Ramaphosa declared GBVF as the second pandemic in the country, the effect of the scourge continues to worsen, with brutal violations of women and children in the province

According to the department, the Mangaung Metro remains a hotspot

“It is for this reason that on 14 May, Cabinet approved a 90-day programme for a visibility awareness campaign, social cohesion and parenting, economic sector participation, as well as communication and community mobilisa-

tion,” said Hlalele

“These senseless acts of beastly violence against defenceless women and children have left an indelible stain, not only in our province, but countrywide

“We have unfortunately earned the shameful label of a nation that casually murders its women and children”

Brutal GBVF in the province is exemplified by the killing of young and adult women, for no apparent reason These include Mpho Judith Moalusi, Olorota Mongalo, Bongiwe Phulampa, Puleng Motlodi and Khethiwe Nkambule

“These poor women lost their lives because some cowards felt that they had the power to decide their fate

“The perpetrators, driven by misplaced rage and a complete disregard for human life and seemingly a deep-lying and raw hatred for women were determined that they would violently take the lives of those defenceless women, ” said Hlalele

“Our country is known as a place where men are so emboldened that they can kill women and dispose of their bodies in pit latrines, as was the case with Motlodi of Thaba Nchu, whose abductors cut her life short at the age of only 19

“Ours is indeed a nation in need of help,” believes Hlalele

Double honour for police officer

Police sergeant Badiri Bessie Nthoba received special recognition for the strides she has made toward positively changing the world, from both within the community and her work environment. She was named the Best Game-changer in Police Services and Investigation by the Southern Region Women in Media Awards (SRWIMA).

In addition, on the work front, Nthoba received the Best Learner award in the Economics-Related Crime Scene Learning programme yet another testament to her hunger for knowledge and excellence in her field

She was recognised during two events, held in Bloemfontein on 3 and 4 October

Nthoba is attached to the Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit A mother of two, Nthoba has built her career on courage, compassion, and an unwavering sense of justice

As one of only three dedicated serial investigators at Mangaung FCS, she spends her days and often nights pursuing perpetrators of serial sexual offences, determined to give survivors their voice back

One of her recent highlights was her meticulous investigation that secured a life sentence plus five years for a man who raped a young girl while forcing her friend to witness the horror

“It’s not just about conviction; it’s about restoring dignity,” Nthoba often says

She recalls one case where a serial rapist was sentenced to five life terms across four dockets

Just before a crucial court date, a young victim who was to testify disappeared

“Her father told me she wasn’t in a good space, ” remembers Nthoba

“I got in the car and drove through Welkom looking for her When I found her, she didn’t want to go through with it I sat down with her and explained how important her voice was not just for justice, but for her own healing”

That night, Nthoba did not go home She made sure the girl had food, toiletries, and a safe bed to sleep in The next morning, the young survivor took the stand

“When I saw her lift her head in court and speak her truth, I knew she was taking back her power And that made every moment worth it”

Nthoba’s recognition and story is one of strength and empathy woven together

Each award on her shelf is more than a symbol of professional achievement it is a reflection of lives changed, dignity restored and hope reignited

Experts advise nutrients could remedy joint pain

Experiencing joint pain and stiffness, also known as arthralgia, during the winter season is not uncommon This discomfort presents in addition to fevers, sore throats and body aches during the cold and flu season

Even the early spring chill could still have ill effects

Selvan Naicker, brand manager for OsteoEze, explains the cause of the discomfort of joint pain

“During winter, joint pain can affect your day-to-day living, even when you are not suffering from a cold or the flu

“When you ’ re fighting off a virus, your immune system goes into high alert, triggering inflammation as a defence mechanism

“Along with barometric pressure changes, viral infections like the cold or flu can often trigger body-wide inflammation, making existing joint pain worse and causing new aches in otherwise healthy individuals

“Pair that with chilly weather, and your joints can end up feeling like they’ve caught the flu too,” he said

Naicker strongly recommends the intake of a healthy diet during winter to fend off this uncomfortable experience

“A strong immune system is

your best defence during cold and flu season

“Nutrients such as vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc and magnesium help regulate inflammation and may support recovery

“If your joints feel unusually stiff or painful during cold and flu season, it’s worth listening to your body Joint discomfort may be your immune system’s way of flagging that it’s under stress, or simply a reminder to slow down and take care of yourself

“After all, the goal this season is simple: Kick the cold, dodge the flu, and keep those joints happy,” he said

Foods naturally rich in vitamin D include fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel, as well as egg yolks and beef liver

Nutrients rich in Vitamin C include fruits and vegetables

Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits and lemons, as well as berries, peppers, strawberries and broccoli, are particularly rich in this vitamin

Other good sources include kiwi, cantaloupe, tomatoes and potatoes

Naicker recommends the following simple hints to try and manage pain and keep joints comfortable

Staying warm is not just about feeling cozy, but is also

about maintaining healthy blood flow and keeping your joints supple

Layer up, use heated blankets or hot water bottles, and consider taking warm baths, especially when you ’ re feeling under the weather

When you have caught a cold or flu, it is important to rest, but total immobility can worsen joint stiffness Gentle stretching or short indoor walks can keep joints moving without straining the body

The Arthritis Foundation has encouraged low-impact movement to help prevent flare-ups under these circumstances

Incorporating a joint care supplement into your vitamin intake during winter and beyond can help to keep your joints feeling healthy and flexible during difficult, cold times

Fever, congestion and medication can all dehydrate the body This can impact joint cartilage, which relies on water to stay cushioned and flexible Warm drinks like herbal tea, lemon water, or broth are excellent ways to hydrate while comforting cold symptoms

“When viral inflammation flares up, topical joint soothers or warm compresses can provide much-needed relief,” said Naicker

Young ones given second chances

Children received life-changing surgeries during the most recent Smile Week that took place in Bloemfontein

This series of operations started on Saturday, 27 September, when medical practitioners in the private sector joined hands and operated on five children in the Life Rosepark Hospital

The reconstructive surgeons, Dr Efraim van der Walt and Dr Shashi Agarwal, were joined by anaesthetist Dr Louis van den Berg and performed five operations

Three of these operations were to assist children with prominent ears, and one child with a drooping eyelid

The fifth was an ear reconstruction

More operations were conducted from Monday, 29 September, at the Universitas Academic Hospital at the official start of Smile Week

Twenty children had essential reconstructive surgeries done, including cleft lip and palate repairs, affording them the opportunity to live healthier and more confident lives

One of the children scheduled for surgery is one-year-old Vusumzi Kwabeni from Welkom, who has waited more than a year to undergo his unilateral cleft lip repair following a successful heart surgery Vusumzi’s

mother, Nomvula, recalls the difficult journey they have endured to reach this milestone “At first, I was confused and scared I thought the doctor had made a mistake during my C-section

When I saw Vusi in the incubator being fed milk with a syringe, I cried

“But I told myself I had to be strong The doctors then discovered he had a hole in his heart, and we had to wait until that was repaired before he could have his cleft surgery

“We have travelled from Welkom to Bloemfontein many times, sometimes

CONMAN ORDERED TO PAY BACK ALMOST A MILLION

TEBOHO SETENA

The Ladybrand Commercial Crimes Court has ordered the owner of a bogus investment scheme to reimburse the victims This follows his conviction and sentencing on multiple charges alongside his fraudulent company, MTS General Trading

The court order against Sebotso Washington Lepoqo (35) is significant to the victims he conned It is part of the hefty sentencing handed down during proceedings on 30 September

The court found Lepoqo and his company guilty of numerous counts of fraud and money laundering They also violated the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act

The outcome of the trial was due to the Bethlehem Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team The elite crime fighting wing uncovered the fraud committed through the get-rich-scheme that had been operated during 2021 shortly after the Covid-19 pandemic

WO Fikiswa Matoti, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said the court had acquitted the third accused, Faith Pontsho Lepoqo (61) Sebotso’s mother She was acquitted on all charges, although the investigation revealed that both mother and son had managed the fraudulent scheme

Matoti said Lepoqo was sentenced as follows:

■ on 31 counts of fraud, 12 years’ imprisonment;

■ on 32 counts of contravening the FAIS Act, ten years’ imprisonment or a fine of R1 million; and

■ on 124 counts of money laundering, ten years’ imprisonment

Matoti said the sentences were each wholly suspended for five years This is on the condition that Lepoqo is not convicted of similar crimes during the period

“The company was sentenced to a fine of R1 million, wholly suspended for five years, for contravening the FAIS Act,” she said

Matoti said the court took a hard stance against Lepoqo, despite the suspension of sentences

“He was further ordered to repay R960 000 to the victims Several community members from Ladybrand invested in MTS General Trading as they were promised a 30% monthly return on money invested When they failed to receive any dividends, the victims opened criminal cases The matter was referred to the Hawks, which conducted a thorough investigation leading to the arrest of the duo” said Matoti More than ten people were reportedly defrauded through the bogus investment scheme

Failure to reimburse the victims will result in the uplifting of the 12 years’ imprisonment sentences,” said Matoti

The arrests in this case were effected in January this year

with no food for me, just enough milk and nappies for Vusi I never missed an appointment because I want him to have the same opportunities as other children

“Now it is finally our turn to be happy I cannot stop imagining how he will look after the operation,” said Nomvula

Moira Gerszt, acting chief executive officer (CEO) of the Smile Foundation, says this week is an inspiring reminder of what can be achieved through collaboration

“Smile Week is more than just a hospital initiative; it is about restoring dignity and changing lives Thanks to our partnership with Easigas and the dedicated medical team at the Universitas Academic Hospital, we can give these children the chance to smile, speak, and thrive Each surgery represents a new beginning not, only for the child but for their entire family”

Dr Nikita Blake, a lead doctor in the Free State Smile Weeks, said the initiative is an opportunity to tell people that there is help available for children

with medical problems like cleft lips and palates, Moebius syndrome, burns, and other facial conditions

“Parents should seek medical help The sooner medical intervention can be done, the better the chances of children achieving normal goals” The Smile Foundation has been partnering with academic hospitals across South Africa for over 25 years, working with medical teams to reduce surgery backlogs, provide psychosocial support for families, and ensure sustainable capacity building within the healthcare system

Partnership aims for lasting change

The ongoing partnership in the Family Math and Science Summit programme between the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) and the University of the Free State (UFS) continues to make an impactful change

This was highlighted at the 15th instalment of the programme held at the university’s campus in Bloemfontein on Friday, 3 October

This innovative partnership entails training Mathematics and Science teachers, as well as supporting learners and parents, and has ultimately resulted in its expansion to nine additional universities across the country

It was initiated in 2018 and has grown in status In an issued statement, the parties confirmed that the number of participants benefitting from this partnership continued to increase since its inception

“Since 2018, the number has soared from just over 25 000 to more than 105 000 in 2024,

reaching a total of 426 000 beneficiaries This includes over 5 800 teachers, almost 320 000 learners, nearly 98 000 parents, and over 4 300 students,” said Themba Mhambi, Sanral’s board chairperson

Sanral’s board has approved the continuation of funding for this project based on its success

Mhambi said the project’s success has even prompted expansion to include universities in provinces such as the Western Cape, North West and Gauteng

“Using public funds, it is in our interest and an obligation that we ensure that this programme not only continues, but that it grows in leaps and bounds Our dedication to this programme is to ensure its success, ” said Mhambi

“One of the major disadvantages of rural schools is the lack of teaching resources More than 40% of the total project budget is allocated to classroom teaching resources, including

learners’ worksheets and activity material, as well as parent workshop resources

“Sanral’s contribution addresses one of the most basic and fundamental needs in teaching and learning at rural schools”

Prof Hester Klopper, vice-chancellor and principal of the UFS, said that the university’s partnership with Sanral demonstrated its commitment to advancing mathematics education for young people

“The vision we share with Sanral represents something remarkable in the university landscape This initiative has now touched thousands of lives across the country,” stated Klopper

“And this is much more than just numbers; it is about fundamental change in how we approach maths and science education in our schools for the development of our children and this country’s citizens”

Legendary Stimela joins fest in township

TEBOHO SETENA

Legendary South African Afro-fusion band Stimela is billed to perform for the first time at this year ’ s Lemo Fest, taking place in Bloemfontein from 3 to 18 October

The band is featured in the Afro Soul and Jazz show scheduled for Saturday, 11 October Featuring 13 performing artists, the show will bring down the curtain on the extravagant music shows that have been planned

Lemo Fest offerings include comedy, art and fashion shows, as well as motorsport spinning This year marks the third instalment of the festival that distinguishes itself by hosting all activities in the township It is organised by businessman Freddie Kenny, who is Bloemfontein-born and bred Stimela is returning to the limelight with a blend talent the new generation is teaming up with seasoned band members to offer the audience a taste of timeless and conscious music

This will be the band’s first show in the Free State’s capital since the Covid-19 pandemic and the devastating deaths of four members Surviving and new members continuing the band’s rich legacy are Jabu Sibumbe, bass guitarist; Thapelo Khomo, keyboardist; Ntokozo Zungu, lead guitarist; and Sam Ndlovu, vocalist

Deceased members include:

Tsietsi Daniel Motijoane, the vocalist well-known as Nana Coyote

(1955 – July 2010); Ray Chikapa Phiri, vocalist and guitarist (1947 – July 2017); Isaac “Mca” Mtshali, drummer (1955 – August 2019); and Thabo Lloyd Lelosa, keyboardist (1955 – December 2021)

Sibumbe, one of the four founders of Stimela in the 1980s, delightedly confirmed the band’s return to the South African entertainment stage with the Lemo Fest

According to Sibumbe, the festival is well-timed for igniting the fire in the band

“The festival resonates well with the philosophy of Stimela pioneering for black upliftment and consciousness through our music and messaging Therefore, we believe we need to support it and the effort of the organiser towards uplifting people in the township Stimela is rooted in its people, their experiences of township life and their struggles,” he said However, Sibumbe stated that the band was in a significant transition after losing members

“We have on board a new generation, that includes vocalist Sam, who has been baptized into Stimela’s broad philosophy of the people The four founding members including myself, Sibumbe, Ray, Lloyd and Mtshali were inspired by the philosophy of the people The band is coming to Bloemfontein with renewed energy ”

Sibumbe explained that bringing on board youthful talented musicians and collaborations is part of the heritage of the band

and that this open-minded approach significantly contributed to the longevity of the band

“Going forward, you will see mainly young and upcoming artists from different places There are so many musically talented individuals around Africa, but none of them can replace any person in the world because God gave each of us, individually, something that no one else can replace”

Legacy well established

The band’s career spans over three decades since its formation in the 1980s Stimela is also popularly known as the People’s Band, because they offer a distinctive music genre, which is appealing to a broad audience both older listeners and young people

Some of the band’s thought-provoking songs were unpopular with the apartheid regime They include “Look, Listen and Decide,” “Unfinished Story,” “Trouble in the Land of Plenty” and “Highland Drifter,” which the apartheid government reportedly banned from airplay on any SABC radio stations, while “Whispers in the Deep” also faced restrictions by the past regime Other inspiring Stimela songs are “African Changes, ” “See the World Through the Eyes of a Child,” “Nkata mgreeka (Danger Signs)” and “Rubbing Sand in my Eyes”

Peak times shape staffing

South Africa moved into the second half of the year with the e-commerce sector riding a powerful wave of growth. Thanks to global players like Amazon and Temu for their injection of fresh energy into the market; signalling renewed investment and momentum. To keep up the pace, the logistics industry is expanding rapidly, working to meet the surging demand for fast, reliable fulfilment. But riding this wave comes with challenges.

Seasonal peaks, especially around Black Friday and the festive season, cause sharp spikes in labour demand Maintaining a large permanent workforce to handle these waves is neither practical nor cost-effective

Temporary Employment Services (TES) providers are the steady force helping companies stay balanced on this wave By supplying trained and adaptable staff exactly when needed, TES companies enable e-commerce and logistics businesses to maintain efficiency, uphold service levels, and meet customer expectations throughout the busiest times

The challenge lies not in maintaining a permanent workforce, but in the need to supplement the workforce at short notice with additional labour Peak periods place immense pressure on e-commerce and logistics operations to perform at scale, and TES companies enable this flexibility by offering on-demand access to large volumes of temporary staff These workers are deployed for fixed periods, aligned to the company ’ s requirements without the long-term costs, commitments or administration of full-time employment

For the industries involved, this model ensures businesses can handle sudden spikes in order volumes while continuing to deliver a consistent customer experience

Aside from the operational value TES providers deliver to clients, peak periods create an opportunity for many workers to gain their first experience in the formal job market, with temporary placements offering a foot in the door

In this way, individuals can learn new skills in industries that are expected to remain strong in the long term These roles offer exposure to structured work environments, new technologies and established operational processes This experience can open doors to further employment or even permanent positions over time

Technology plays a central role in e-commerce and logistics operations While companies may seek candidates with general experience in warehouse environments or picking and packing roles, the reality is that each company has its own processes and systems These differences mean that workers, whether temporary or permanent, require client-specific induction and training

TES providers take this into account during placements They offer onboarding support to ensure that workers are aligned with the client’s systems and workflow so that they can hit the ground running as quickly as possible

Another important consideration is that returns are a cost burden in e-commerce Mistakes in picking, packing and shipping can lead to dissatisfied customers and lost revenue However, the risk of error is not necessarily linked to whether a worker is permanent or temporary what matters is the level of training, support and oversight in place

TES providers work closely with their clients to help reduce error rates, improve accuracy, and ultimately support profitability When a strong partnership exists between the TES provider and the client, operational efficiency improves dramatically across the board

As South Africa’s e-commerce and logistics sectors gather pace, TES providers are proving to be the quiet force keeping operations on track They solve the staffing puzzle that comes with seasonal surges while also opening doors for job creation and skills growth In a market where consumer expectations never slow down, adaptability is everything TES partners give businesses that edge, combining flexibility with the know-how to keep the peak season wave from becoming a wipeout

Kovsie men leave mark in sporting history book

TEBOHO SETENA

The University of the Free State’s (UFS) men ’ s football team is celebrating having its name immortalised in the history of South Africa’s premier university tournament, the Varsity Sports tournament

The Kovsies football side lifted the coveted Varsity Football trophy after beating the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) 5 4 on penalties in the final played on Thursday, 2 October, in Bloemfontein

It took a penalty shootout to decide the winner of the 2025 tournament, and the UFS men emerged victorious

This was the first time the Kovsies football team had reached the final and went on to lift the sought-after trophy This achievement saw them join their peers the men ’ s rugby team known as the Shimlas, and the women ’ s Kovsie netball team with the netball team boasting five titles since the inception of the Varsity championship

It was the second year running that the UFS staged the finals, with two teams competing in different categories of the final face-offs The netball team did not claim victory in the final this year, however

The Kovsie men ’ s football team made history by winning their maiden trophy on their first attempt thus making amends after previously merely reaching the semifinals of the tournament

This team defied the odds as they were inspired by newly appointed head coach

Mokete Tsotetsi and his technical team comprising Teboho Moeti (assistant coach) and Donald Nkopane (goalkeeper coach)

The UFS side brought joy just two days after spirits were dampened when the UFS netball team lost the crown to the NorthWest University’s (NWU) Eagles, losing 49 57 in the final played at the Callie Human Centre on 29 September

Jerry Laka, sports director at the UFS, has applauded the men ’ s team for achieving what had seemed impossible He alluded to three UFS teams having been listed in the history books of the South African premier university championship

“It is wonderful to have the men ’ s football team as champion,” said Laka

Last year, the Kovsie netball team and the Shimlas claimed the prestigious Varsity Netball and Varsity Rugby championship titles

The netball team achieved the milestone of winning five titles and reaching their sixth final under the guidance of respected South African and internationally renowned coach, Burta de Kock She inspired her players to accomplish the feat of winning five titles in 2013, 2014, 2018, 2021 and 2024

The Kovsies netball team is the most successful of all the participating university teams
