HERE FOR THE GOOD STUFF

February always feels a little different. After the optimism and momentum of January, it tends to be a quieter month – one that invites a slower pace and a bit more reflection.

Maybe it’s the natural comedown after a new year, or simply the moment we stop looking so far ahead and start checking in with ourselves. Either way, February often feels like a time to lean inward and focus on the things that genuinely make us feel good.

That’s very much the spirit of this issue. From comforting food and calming spaces to experiences that encourage

balance, connection and self-care, we’ve focused on the small but meaningful ways we find joy in everyday life here.

Whether it’s a restaurant that lifts your mood, a place that helps you slow down, or an experience that leaves you feeling refreshed, we hope these pages help you discover moments that matter throughout the month.

Here’s to February – and feeling good, in every sense.

This month’s shout-out

“Recently, the team have been comparing dinner-and-a-show notes, but for me there is only one: Gatsby Dubai. A late-night, high-glam evening straight out of a 1920s fever dream – think velvet interiors, moody lighting, feathery, sparkling outfits, voices that give us chills, and dance moves that leave us stunned. The whole room is pure magic. Maybe our deeper obsession isn’t just the show, but living in that glittery fantasy world… even for a just few hours.” – Lana Du, Reporter

TEAM’S POV

We answer the questions you didn’t even ask.

Where’s your favourite romantic date spots?

Sammi Barnard

“I’m more of a stay-at-home, cook a meal and light candles kind of girl… but if we’re going out, it has to be sky-high and seriously special. Fine-dining with a view is instant romance for me – Mott 32 might just be my favourite.” @mott32dubai

Spending time in open natural spaces or quiet beach spots. I like putting some music on and switching everything else off. Peaceful places like Sunset Beach or Al Barari, with all its greenery and nature, always makes me feel instantly better.

Part personal essay, party city diary, What’s On Features Editor LEONIE WAGNER traces her evolving relationship with Abu Dhabi – through parks and beaches, cafés and routines, languages and moments of magic – revealing how the city says “I love you” in more ways than one

WORDS: LEONIE WAGNER

Dear Abu Dhabi,

Tonight I’m sitting on a bench in a park, the kind where families arrive with folding chairs and far too much food. Someone is braaing nearby. The smell hangs in the air, smoky and comforting. Kids run past laughing, barefoot, sticky-fingered and fearless. A father is teaching his son how to ride a bike. The boy wobbles, panics, laughs again. The father jogs beside him, one hand hovering, ready but not rushing.

smell hangs in the air, smoky and comforting. and fearless. A is his son how to a bike.

Behind them, the fountains switch on and start to change colour. Blue. Purple. White. Pink. Emerald green. Red. Orange. Gold and yellow. It feels magical and completely normal at the same time. That’s your trick.

People pause to take selfies, quickly, almost apologetically, like they don’t want to disturb the moment. Cars glide past glowing underneath, neon and unapologetic. The chains on the swings clink softly as kids kick higher. Somewhere, a supercar revs its engine because of course it does. From a child’s neon-lit toy car, Taylor Swift’s Love Story floats into the night. I laugh. You have a sense of humour.

feels and completely want to disturb neon The the know I’d miss

Then the call to prayer rises. One voice, then another. Perfect harmony. It wraps around the park, settles into the laughter, the fountains, the glow. Everything pauses, just for a moment.

It’s been six months since I arrived, and you’ve never rushed me. You didn’t demand attention or insist on grand gestures. You invited me in quietly, patiently, letting me discover you in fragments. In evenings like this. In ordinary magic. In moments I didn’t know I’d miss until I was inside them.

children in the

Sometimes love is messy, too. It’s not only in flowers and chocolates. It lives in the real, everyday moments. In Abu Dhabi, it’s the scattered spa cards on the pavement and the constant chorus of taxis hooting, children laughing and pigeons taking flight. It’s in the strange, familiar mix of aromas that sit in the air on a hot summer’s day. It’s waiting for a ride under a streetlight that feels too bright. It’s a rushed coffee grabbed between meetings. It’s overhearing 10 different languages in one lift – it’s honest and real.

This city doesn’t say I love you just once. It says it in many languages too. and chocolates. It lives in the

Je t’aime – French

For the moments that feel elegant, unhurried and quietly romantic.

At Emirates Palace, love arrives just before sunset. The fountains dance and change colour while the sky softens over the beach. People slow their steps without realising it. Couples linger. Friends stretch conversations long past the point of practicality. It’s grand, yes, but calm. A place that lets you stay. The Flamingo Room by tashas speaks the same language. Playful, glamorous, confident. You sit a little straighter here. You enjoy the theatre of it. You order dessert even when you’re full. Around you, laughter bounces between tables, glasses clink, and no one seems in a hurry to leave. This is Je t’aime as Abu Dhabi does it. Polished but warm. Stylish without being cold. Here, love flirts gently and knows it doesn’t need to try too hard. try too

Ti amo – Italian

For the places that feed you properly and then ask you to slow down.

At Sand & Koal, love is loud and shared. Smoke curls into the air. Plates land in the middle of the table. Conversations overlap. Strangers become neighbours for an hour or two. You arrive hungry and leave full in every sense.

At the Grand Hyatt, Ti amo settles in at Verso, where Italian comfort does what it does best. Warm plates. Generous portions. Conversations that stretch long after the last bite. Step outside to the terrace at Lexx and the city opens up. Big sky. Open water. A view so good it interrupts whatever you were saying.

This is love that nourishes. That insists you sit down. That reminds you eating together is its own language.

Ti amo also softens into Abu Dhabi’s quieter indulgences. In spa corridors that smell faintly of eucalyptus and something expensive. In hushed voices and warm towels. These are the places you come to when you’ve had enough of being switched on. Where touch is intentional and silence feels earned.

Up on the rooftop at Andaz Capital Gate, the city feels lighter. The pool stretches out towards the sky, the view bending slightly, the noise far below. You float. You stare out. You forget what time it is. This is love that gives you space and asks nothing back.

This is love that insists you stay a little longer. and

On Kai Beach, the sand is pale and soft, the water calm enough to trust. People arrive early, stay long, move slowly. There’s no rush here, only the steady rhythm of the sea and the quiet understanding that this is exactly where you’re meant to be.

Ana behibak – Arabic

For the soul of the city and the things that ground you.

The Corniche speaks this language fluently. People walking, running, cycling. Some training. Some thinking. Some simply moving because that’s what keeps them steady. The sea keeps pace beside them, constant and reassuring.

In the parks, families picnic on mats, food passed around without ceremony. Kids dart between blankets and benches, stopping only when hunger or exhaustion demands it. This is everyday love. Practical. Protective. Real.

At the Zayed National Museum, Ana behibak grows quieter. The past is held with care. Stories preserved without spectacle. It’s a reminder that everything new stands on something deeply rooted. That progress and memory can exist side by side.

At Hudayriyat Beach, love shows up in motion. Runners. Cyclists. Families. Swimmers. Everyone doing their own thing, together. It’s open and honest and practical. A beach built for living, not posing. This is Abu Dhabi in its most grounded form. Clean. Safe. Generous with space. The kind of place that makes routine feel Generous like a privilege.

Zayed National Museum

Mahal kita – Tagalog

For joy, community and happiness that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

On Yas Island, love turns the volume up. Theme parks hum with anticipation. Screams cut through the air. Adults forget to be cool. Kids lose themselves completely. Joy is allowed to be big here.

The karaoke spots belong in this chapter too. Off-key singing. Pop songs belted with confidence. Strangers cheering like old friends. Laughter spilling into corridors. Community built in three minutes and a chorus. Sweat, flashing lights, shared embarrassment and shared joy. Mahal kita is fun, fearless and unapologetically shared.

Main tumse pyaar karta

hoon – Hindi

For love that lives in routine and shows up every day. This is the language of early mornings and steady habits. Of walks along the Corniche that become rituals. Of parks revisited week after week. Of familiar views from the Grand Hyatt that quietly remind you why you stay.

It’s love without performance. Love that understands consistency matters more than drama.

Abu Dhabi, you don’t shout your love. You show it. In working fountains and clean parks. In safety that lets kids wobble, fall and get back up again. In space. In light. In time. Like every good love story, you made the invitation first.

And like every honest answer, mine didn’t come with fireworks.

Just certainty. My answer, still, is yes.

Early-season

ranking points, a proven hard-court set-up and a strong returning field put Abu Dhabi firmly in

focus

WORDS: LANA DU

The Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open has become a useful reference point on the early WTA calendar. Set just after the Australian Open, it offers players a chance to consolidate form, pick up significant ranking points and settle into the rhythm of the season on a familiar hard-court surface.

Now entering its fourth edition, the tournament returns to Zayed Sports City from January 31 to February 7, continuing its steady growth as a WTA 500 event and a reliable draw for established names and emerging contenders alike.

A PLACE ON THE CALENDAR

Positioning matters on the WTA Tour and Abu Dhabi’s timing has proven effective. For players exiting Melbourne early, it offers immediate competitive opportunity. For those coming off deep runs, it provides a controlled environment to reset and accumulate points without the travel strain of a full swing.

The conditions in Abu Dhabi tend to reward clean ball-striking and first-strike tennis, with the surface offering consistent bounce and pace. It is a setting that has historically favoured assertive baseline players who can dictate rallies and manage short turnarounds between matches.

THE FIELD

As a WTA 500 event, the tournament awards 470 ranking points to the champion and typically attracts a balanced field: top-20 players looking to anchor their season, alongside younger competitors testing themselves against elite opposition.

Defending champion Belinda Bencic returns having already won twice in Abu Dhabi. Her early ball contact and ability to take the return on the rise have made the venue a good fit for her game. A third title would further underline her consistency on hard courts early in the year.

Alexandra Eala arrives as one of the tour’s most closely monitored young players. Still early in her senior career, her progression has been marked by improved shot tolerance and confidence in longer exchanges, attributes that are often tested over a full WTA 500 draw.

MATCH PLAY

Across eight days, 28 singles players and 16 doubles teams will compete at the International Tennis Centre. The structure of the draw places a premium on adaptability, with limited recovery time and varied opponent profiles across the week.

Doubles, often an underplayed element of WTA events, remains a feature here, offering sharp contrast in tempo and tactics and providing valuable match play for singles specialists building all-court awareness early in the season.

BEYOND THE BASELINE

Away from match play, tournament organisers continue to run a programme of school sessions and public activations in the lead-up to the event. These initiatives are designed to widen exposure to the sport locally but remain secondary to the competitive focus of the week.

For players and fans alike, the primary appeal remains what unfolds on court: ranking points, match volume and the chance to set a tone for the months ahead.

Where Abu Dhabi goes to play

WORDS: LEONIE WAGNER

We tend to think of playgrounds as places with slides and swings, but Abu Dhabi is quietly changing that idea. Here, play is expansive. It is active, social, sun-drenched and sometimes a little daring. It is for kids, yes, but

it is also for adults who want to move, sweat, laugh and remember that fun does not come with an age limit. From Hudayriyat to Yas and the emerging promise of Fahid Island, the capital’s playgrounds are bigger, bolder and designed for all of us.

WHERE PLAY GETS SERIOUS

Hudayriyat Island feels like a choose-your-own-adventure kind of place – you arrive with a plan and leave having done far more than you expected.

Marsana

Marsana is the island’s lively waterfront heart. A long sandy beach sets the tone, where kids dig happily and adults slow their pace. There is a splash park, a children’s play area and a pool, balanced out by an outdoor gym and winding cycle paths that pull parents into the action. It has a marina with a viewing pier and a promenade lined with cafes, restaurants and a convenience store means the day never has to end early. Marsana understands that play also includes good food, cold drinks and the freedom to stay a while.

Circuit X

This is where energy levels spike. This is adventure play with salt in the air and adrenaline in your veins: high ropes courses challenge your balance and bravery; zip lines send you flying; while climbing walls, BMX tracks and skate parks keep everyone moving.

321 Sports

For those who like their play organised and purposeful, 321 Sports is a dream. Spread across more than 750,000 square feet, this world-class sports complex offers football pitches, basketball courts, padel tennis, tennis, badminton and a full athletics track. At the centre is the 321Hub, home to a gym, functional training space, sauna, plunge pool, yoga studio, bike store, nursery and cafe.

Surf Abu Dhabi

Surf Abu Dhabi feels almost unreal. Perfect waves roll in on cue, creating a premium surf experience that welcomes first-timers and seasoned surfers alike. You paddle out, drop in and suddenly the rest of the day disappears. Between sessions, there are cold drinks, great food and a relaxed beach club vibe that makes it easy to forget the time. This is play that feels like a holiday, even if you are only here for the afternoon.

Cycling Tracks

Hudayriyat’s cycling tracks wrap around the island in scenic loops designed for all levels. Some rides are gentle and social. Others are fast and challenging. What they share are wide open views and the simple pleasure of moving outdoors, with the city just far enough away.

Heritage Trail

Play does not always have to be loud or fast. The Hudayriyat Heritage Trail offers a quieter kind of exploration. Along the route, shell middens tell the story of pearl fishermen who once lived here. Remains of dugongs and sharks point to a deep relationship with the sea. It is a reminder that curiosity is also a form of play, and that discovery can be just as rewarding as speed.

Fahid Island is still emerging, but its vision is already clear. This is a place being designed with wellness, nature and play at its centre, with walkable spaces, outdoor activity zones and places that encourage connection, not just consumption. Here, play is expected to be softer and more mindful. Morning swims. Evening walks. Spaces where kids roam freely and adults feel invited, not sidelined. Fahid Island promises a playground that blends seamlessly into everyday life.

BIG RIDES, BIGGER SMILES

Yas Island does not do subtle – this is play on a grand scale, where generations come together and everyone joins in.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

Ferrari World remains a rite of passage. Home to the world’s fastest roller coaster, it is about shared thrills and collective screams. Parents ride alongside kids. Friends dare each other to go again. It is pure, uncomplicated joy.

Yas Waterworld

Yas Waterworld turns play into a full-body workout. Slides twist and plunge, wave pools keep everyone moving and lazy rivers offer just enough rest before the next ride. Phones disappear. Laughter takes over. It is fun in its most democratic form.

CLYMB Abu Dhabi

Pure adrenaline. You climb higher, fall faster and leave buzzing. Home to the world’s tallest indoor climbing wall and the region’s first indoor skydiving chamber, this is not gentle fun. It is the kind that makes your palms sweat and your heart race. Kids climb higher than you expect. Adults surprise themselves. Whether you are scaling walls or floating mid-air, CLYMB delivers that rare thrill of doing something that once felt impossible.

Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi

Warner Bros World taps into nostalgia as much as imagination. Kids meet their heroes. Adults quietly reconnect with theirs. It is playful, immersive and proof that some of the best fun lives in familiar stories.

MAMABELLA

Instagram-promised nonnas, comfort and chaos –we disocver if this italian eatery lives up to the hype

WORDS: MADIE MURPHY

After months of anticipation, Instagram hype and the promise of Italian grandmothers cooking your dinner, Mamabella opened its doors and we went in hungry (and curious) to see whether this much-talked-about spot is more than just a PR stunt.

The vibe

Walking into Mamabella feels like stepping into a well-dressed Italian family home rather than a polished Dubai restaurant. It’s warm, bustling and full of life, the kind of place where chatter bounces off the walls and you’re encouraged to linger rather than rush through courses.

For those wanting to have an extra special experience, there is a private dining area that looks exactly like you are stepping into the kitchen of the nonnas Think coloured tiles, fun tablecloths and one big table to share food over. The grandmothers are front and centre, rolling pasta, stirring sauces and occasionally chatting with guests like they’ve known

them for years — if you speak Italian, that is. It’s charming without feeling gimmicky and there’s a genuine sense of comfort here, like you’re sitting at the table in your own grandmother’s kitchen.

It’s not quiet, it’s not moody and it’s definitely not a place for whispering over candlelight. Mamabella is about togetherness, noise, laughter and plates being passed around.

The food and drinks

The menu leans heavily into classic Italian comfort food, and honestly, that’s exactly what you want it to do. Portions are generous, flavours are bold and there’s nothing trying too hard to be OTT.

The recipes taste like they’ve been made with decades of practice (because, well, they have).

The homemade pasta is the star of the show. The pizza is equally satisfying, with a crisp base and toppings that keep things traditional rather than experimental.

If you’re a meat lover, you’ll be glad to know everything is wood-fired, leaning into the history and heritage behind the restaurant.

The drinks menu keeps things easygoing. Italian wines dominate, cocktails are unfussy and everything feels designed to complement the food rather than distract from it.

The service Service is friendly, relaxed and occasionally a little chaotic, but in a way that suits the restaurant’s personality. Staff are happy to explain dishes, make recommendations and lean into the story behind the concept without overdoing it. And while the nonnas aren’t tableside entertainers, their presence adds a warmth you can’t manufacture. You’ll find some incredible performers floating around, too, as they dance traditonal Italian dances and get everyone up on the floor.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Mamabella isn’t trying to reinvent Italian food and that’s exactly why it works. It’s comforting, lively and genuinely enjoyable, delivering on its promise of soulful cooking and feel-good dining. Come with friends, come hungry, and don’t be in a rush to leave. This is Italian dining the way it’s meant to be: loud, loving and full of heart.

BARBOSSA

Where brunch gets loud, colourful and unapologetically fun

WORDS: LEONIE WAGNER

The spot

Barbossa is a Mexican restaurant that doesn’t do subtle. It’s loud in colour, big on energy and sits right on the Yas Bay waterfront, where the cocktails catch the light and the mood feels permanently upbeat. It’s fun, flirty and clearly here for a good time. We came to see what the fuss was about at their legendary brunch, and from the moment you walk in, it’s clear this is more fiesta than formality.

The vibe

Plenty of places in Abu Dhabi do brunch, but Barbossa plays a different game. It is bright, bold and playful, yet really comes alive as the sun dips and the volume goes up. Dancers move through the room, a live saxophonist weaves between table, and a DJ keeps the tempo just right. Before you know it, brunch has turned into a full-blown daytime party.

The food and drinks

This is a sharing table kind of affair and you should arrive hungry.

We started with guac and chips. Crispy tortilla chips, proper homemade guacamole, jalapeños and salsa that made it impossible to stop dipping. The Baja salad was fresh and satisfying, with grilled corn, beans, avocado and a light agave sherry dressing that kept everything balanced.

The flautas were crunchy and comforting, stuffed with shredded chicken

and finished with sour cream, salsa verde, cotija and a punchy salsa de arbol. The trio ceviche was a highlight. Salmon crudo, shrimp aguachile and a tropical coconut ceviche, all fresh and bright and perfect with the house-made tortilla chips. The tuna tostada followed, layered with avocado, salsa macha, mayo and crisp celery for texture.

For mains, the trio of tacos lets you sample the best of the menu. Al pastor chicken, carne asada and Baja shrimp, all generously filled and served with proper salsas and Mexican rice. The signature fajitas arrive sizzling and dramatic, loaded with chicken, beef, shrimp and mushrooms, plus all the extras you want. The garlic-spiced salmon was rich and satisfying, grilled well and finished with brown butter, charred lemon and homemade corn tortillas.

Dessert was churros done right. Warm, crisp, rolled in cinnamon sugar and dunked into chocolate sauce without a hint of restraint.

Cocktails keep the mood high. The mezcal paloma is

smoky and refreshing. Margaritas come in every flavour worth considering, but the mango version is the one to order. Aperol spritzes flow easily if you want something lighter between dances.

The service

Friendly, upbeat and always smiling, even as the room fills and the energy climbs.

What to order

❑ Trio ceviche.

❑ Baja salad.

❑ Mango margarita.

What’s on the bill

Dhs249 soft package.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Fast the night before and skip breakfast. This brunch is generous, lively and unapologetically indulgent. Wear comfortable shoes because once the sax starts and the DJ takes over, you will want to dance.

MARCELLA

Fire-driven flavours with marina-side flair

WORDS: LEONIE WAGNER

The spot

Marcella sits right on the Yas Bay Waterfront, with marina views that do half the flirting for you. This is a Spanishinspired modern bistro that leans into fire, smoke and movement, thanks to an open kitchen anchored by a wood-fired grill. You feel it the moment you walk in. Warm, buzzy, a little dramatic in the best way. Chef-owner Mario Loi’s fingerprints are all over the place. After the success of Mika, this feels like a confident second act rather than a safe repeat.

ThevVibe

Classy without the stiffness. Elegant but relaxed. It is perfect for a first date where you want to look like you aren’t trying too hard to make a good first impression, while still making a great first impression. It feels social and grown-up, the kind of place where you order one more drink because golden hour calls for it and once the sun sets, you’ll order another because the night is still young.

The food anddDrinks

This is a menu built for sharing, grazing and arguing politely over the last bite. Spanish flavours sit at the centre, but they are not stuck in the past. Everything feels clean, confident and ingredient-led. We started with tapas. The signature picaña steak roll with chimichurri delivered big flavour and proper satisfaction. The croquetas were rich, cheesy and exactly what you want them to be. The standout though was the courgette flower tempura with honey dressing. Light, crisp, a little sweet and completely and unashamedly addictive. The black rice with squid and espelette came next and surprised us. Deeply savoury, well balanced and comforting without being heavy. Oysters were fresh and clean, no drama, just good produce doing its thing.

Dessert was a chocolate mousse with cream and olive oil. It sounds simple and it is, but it works. Silky, not too sweet, with a sneaky hint of salt.

At the bar, the pomagranate mocktail was a genuine moment of calm. Fresh, balanced and restorative. The crema cocktail was a Marcella take on a margarita and leaned smoky and woody, echoing the fire-driven food and tying the whole experience together.

The service

Friendly, patient and present without hovering. The staff know the menu and give you time to enjoy it.

What to order

❑ Courgette flower tempura with honey dressing.

❑ Signature picaña steak roll with chimichurri.

What’s on the bill

Dhs450 to Dhs500 per couple.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

The flavours are bold but the portions may leave you wanting more, which is not always a bad thing. This is the kind of place where you forget about your diet and do not feel bad about it later.

PITFIRE PIZZA

A quietly confident pizza spot blending New York attitude, Neapolitan roots and a distinctly relaxed Abu Dhabi setting

WORDS: LEONIE WAGNER

The spot

Pitfire feels like one of those places you stumble upon and immediately want to text your friends about. Tucked between the Waterfront Towers, it looks out onto the water with the Cleveland Clinic quietly across the way. Calm, unfussy and a little bit hidden, it is the kind of spot that rewards curiosity. This is homegrown, award-winning pizza that sits comfortably between Neapolitan and New York, landing right where most of us want to be.

The vibe

Relaxed in the best possible way. There is no rush here. Just good views, easy conversation and board games like Uno, Scrabble and Jenga waiting to be pulled off the shelf. It feels like a pause button on the city, even though you are very much still in it.

The food and drinks

The sourdough base is the real star. Made with fresh Italian tomatoes and locally

produced mozzarella, it has that perfect chew and crisp combo that makes you keep going back for another slice.

The garlic knots arrive baked to order, glossy with garlic butter and begging to be dunked into the gorgonzola ranch. Korean chicken wings bring the sweet, the tang and just enough heat to keep things interesting. The Truff Daddy pizza leans indulgent with black truffle paste, mushrooms, caramelised onions and a swirl of white truffle oil, plus a side of truffle cream for good measure.

The buffalo chicken pizza is bold and satisfying, with provolone, gorgonzola, jalapeños and a spicy house-made sauce that means business.

To drink, the peach iced tea is light, fruity and exactly what you want between slices.

The service

Friendly, easygoing and happy to let you settle in.

What to order

❑ Garlic knots.

❑ Any pizza, honestly. The dough does most of the heavy lifting.

What’s on the bill

Around Dhs200 will comfortably feed four people, with pizza to spare and a games night built in.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

A chilled night done right. Great views, good pizza and zero pressure. It feels like a small escape from the city without actually leaving it. Just be prepared to make peace with your carb choices at the gym the next day.

SONTAYA

A Southeast Asian restaurant where sunsets steal the show and the food more than keeps up

WORDS: LEONIE WAGNER

The spot

Sontaya sits at The St Regis Saadiyat like a secret you almost do not want to share. Floating pavilions stretch over the water, with the sea wrapping around you from every angle. This Southeast Asian restaurant takes its name from the word sunset, and it earns it. Watching the sky change colour from here feels like a quiet, bucket-list moment, one of those reminders of just how beautiful Abu Dhabi can be.

The vibe

Intimate without feeling precious. Romantic enough for a date, relaxed enough for families, and ideal for a long lunch or an unhurried dinner with a friend. The location does most of the heavy lifting, and everything else simply falls into place. Being here feels like stepping away from the city while still being very much present in it.

The food and drinks

From the first sip at the bar, the flavours start to show off. A refreshing sorbet tasting sets the tone, followed by a spicy paloma that wakes up the palate.

The Indonesian tuna tartare is fresh and delicate, with avocado, papaya, sturgeon caviar and crispy quinoa bringing texture and balance. The seafood spring rolls arrive golden and crisp, packed with scallops, shrimp and squid, and paired with a wasabi sauce that adds just enough bite.

The green chicken curry is where the kitchen really shines. Warm, fragrant and deeply comforting, with tender chicken, eggplant and palm heart soaked in flavour. It tastes like it could have come straight from Chiang Mai, the kind of dish you slow down for because every bite deserves attention.

Dessert is non negotiable. The mango sticky rice is a rite of passage. Fresh mango, pandan cream and perfectly

cooked rice come together in a way that feels both nostalgic and indulgent. It is the perfect ending and a proper nod to Southeast Asia.

The service

Excellent. Attentive without hovering, warm without being overfamiliar. The staff have mastered the art of timing, never interrupting you mid-bite with the dreaded “how is everything?” moment.

What to order

❑ Indonesian tuna tartare.

❑ Mango sticky rice.

What’s on the bill

Around Dhs450 to Dhs500 for a sharingstyle meal, and worth every dirham. You will leave already thinking about your next visit.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Sontaya is the kind of place that stays with you. Sublime food, immaculate views and a setting that feels quietly special. One visit is never enough.

CURTAIN CALL

Music, moonlight and mass singalongs on Saadiyat Island as this season draws to a close

There is something quietly electric about singing under the stars with strangers. No introductions. No small talk. Just thousands of voices finding the same lyric at the same time. That is the pull of Saadiyat Nights.

When night falls on Saadiyat Island, a stretch of sand between the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum shifts mood. The heat softens. The lights glow warmer. You catch the scent of cardamom and oud in the breeze. It feels cinematic without trying too hard. Like the city knows exactly what it is doing.

WORDS: LEONIE WAGNER
Fallin’ to Empire State of Mind, Alicia Keys delivers a night to remember at Saadiyat Nights

LOOKING BACK

This season of Saadiyat Nights has delivered seven evenings that reminded people why live music still matters. Alicia Keys set the tone on New Year’s Eve with a performance that felt both polished and personal. She opened with New Day, then slipped effortlessly through the songs many of us grew up with. Tracks from Songs in A Minor, The Diary of Alicia Keys and Girl on Fire had the crowd singing like muscle memory kicked in. She moved through eras with ease, stopping at The Element of Freedom and her 2020 self titled album, Alicia The moment everyone talks about came at midnight when she effortlessly transitioned from If I Ain’t Got You to Girl on Fire and then Empire State of Mind swelled just as the countdown hit zero. Fireworks, voices, hands in the air. A proper start to the year.

The nights that followed held their own kind of magic. Diana Ross arrived in full icon mode and took the audience straight back to the 70s, when disco ruled and joy was loud. Seal did the opposite, stepping off the stage and into the crowd, singing alongside fans like this was a shared secret. Ludovico Einaudi barely said a word, letting his piano do the talking. His fingers moved and the audience leaned in. Some people wiped away tears.

Lewis Capaldi had everyone deep in their feelings, delivering goosebumps from start to finish. John Mayer turned the crowd into his backing singers, letting them carry chorus after chorus. Max Richter filled the space with tension and release, the kind that makes your skin prickle. Ricky Martin wrapped things up in rhythm, turning the sand into a dance floor and the crowd into pop stars for the night.

WHAT’S NEXT

Saadiyat Nights works because it keeps things simple. Great music. An open sky. A crowd willing to show up and sing along. Sometimes, that is all you need. As this season of Saadiyat Nights comes to an end, it has been nothing short of amazing. And it is not quietly bowing out. It is lining up a big finish with Mariah Carey, before Bryan Adams officially closes the season. The final two shows land in the month of love, which feels just right. Between them, these two artists have given the world some of its most enduring love songs.

February 7

Mariah Carey arrives with a catalogue built on feeling. Big, open hearted, unapologetic feeling. Her voice moves from soft and intimate to sky high in a matter of seconds, and her love songs have soundtracked first dances, breakups, makeups and late night singalongs for decades. Hero still lands like a quiet pep talk. We Belong Together captures heartbreak with surgical precision. Always Be My Baby remains a masterclass in longing and My All is a confession. It’s guaranteed to be a night where everyone sings like they can hit the notes, even when they can’t, with ginger tea waiting at home.

February 11

Bryan Adams closes things off with a different kind of romance. His songs are about the long road, the open car window, the love that shows up and stays. Summer of ’69 is pure nostalgia, while (Everything I Do) I Do It For You has been slow danced to across generations. His music is familiar in the best way. At Saadiyat Nights, his final show promises big choruses, easy joy, and a crowd singing along like these songs have always been theirs.

BACKYARD CINEMA

Big blockbusters filmed here in the UAE

The combination of futuristic cityscapes, wild otherworldly desert expanses and a talented pool of filmmaking professionals living right here – it’s no wonder the UAE plays the starring role in the staging of so many bigscreen stories.

These are just some of the most famous examples of the UAE, providing backdrops and stealing scenes.

Now You See Me: Now You Don’t (2025)

Christopher Nolan’s movie The Prestige famously taught us that there are three parts to all good magic tricks. The final scenes of this, what is the third installment of the Now You See Me stage illusionist x heist franchise, suggest that this particular saga will likely extend to at least four. The film’s dramatic crescendo is also of particular interest for us UAE dwellers because it takes place in Abu Dhabi, with shoot locations including the F1, multiple Yas Island theme parks, and the pivotal mic drop moment unfolds under the architectural majesty of the Louvre Abu Dhabi dome.

WORDS: MILES BUCKERIDGE

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 (2023)

This seventh Mission: Impossible movie marks the third time the all-thrill-no-fill Tom Cruise vehicle has rolled into the UAE, and it’s an Abu Dhabi double dip. There are the scenes shot inside (and, slight spoiler, on top of) the stunning new Terminal A complex in Zayed International Airport, where the IMF team are trying to intercept the key to a terrifying advanced AI entity. Then there are the Rub’ al Khali ambush sequences where Ethan Hunt (Cruise) provides an extraction service for rogue agent Ilsa Faust.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Five out of five sweaty palms for the stunts in this, the fourth Mission: Impossible movie. The MI gang are in Dubai to intercept the sale of some launch codes and prevent nuclear war, culminating in an incredible free-climbing Burj Khalifa scene that more than makes up for the sprinkling of artistic license used in the film’s geography of Dubai. Still, you’re a more tolerant human than us if you can watch Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) run directly out of DIFC and into some unspecified Old Dubai souk, without commenting loudly on the incredulity of it all.

Dune (2020) and Dune: Part 2 (2024)

Come on down, the spice is right. The Dune series is director Denis Villeneuve’s interpretation of the classic Frank Herbert science fiction novel of the same name and serves as a reboot to the popular 1984 movie. This time around, the cast is headed up by Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Jason Momoa. The story follows Paul Atreides (Chalamet), a young man thrust into a power struggle on a distant planet, where two houses battle for control of the galaxy’s most precious resource: a ‘spice’ called Melange. The main location for the action is the desert planet of Arrakis played, rather nobly by Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter.

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

When the location scouts were searching for a futuristic cityscape to set the third installment of this sci-fi reboot saga, Dubai must have stuck out immediately. Its Tomorrowland architecture, fast cars, smart city credentials and metro stations that look straight outta 3026 make it the perfect candidate for offering a glimpse of what’s to come. So much so, that while many of the scenes were digitally enhanced, we recognised countless locations. JLT, DIFC and the Burj Khalifa all star alongside the cast’s own big names, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba and Anton Yelchin.

Furious 7 (2015)

Love them or hate them, Fast and Furious movies are a big deal at the box office. And the seventh installment of the franchise, Furious 7, takes some of its road rage out on the cinematic streets of our capital. In one of the more physics-defying scenes from a series known for playing fast and loose with the laws of nature, Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) take a Lykan Hypersport car and jump between the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. Twice. This movie was sadly Paul Walker’s last, as he tragically passed away during filming. Impressive CGI rendering was used to fill in his final scenes to make for an emotional farewell.

F1: The Movie (2025)

Brad Pitt jumps into the driving seat of this Joseph Kosinski-directed high-stakes, overheated-brakes racing movie. The story is traditionally sports film coded: a veteran Formula One driver Sonny Hayes (Pitt) is pulled out of retirement for one last shot at the big time. There are personal and professional highs and lows, a challenging mentorship and Sonny subliminally learns how to be a better person along the way. One of the key aspects of this movie is how poetically it translates the pole-seeking driving experience to screen. That and the boatload of real world racer cameos. The genuine F1 world circuit tracks are also drafted in to add authenticity to the project, and even those who have skipped the whole Drive to Survive phenomenon, would probably be able to tell you which city hosts the thrilling conclusion to each season… Yep, our own Abu Dhabi, the footage for which was captured at the actual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December 2024, Yas Marina Circuit.

Gran Turismo (2023)

Whilst this isn’t a straight movie adaptation of the game, as Gran Turismo doesn’t have a plotline, the Gran Turismo movie follows the story of how a videogame changed a young man’s fortunes. This is the miraculous real-life tale of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe). Jann was an elite gamer, a Gran Turismo grandmaster who was recruited into a racing academy on a marketing exec’s (Danny Moore, played by Orlando Bloom) gut intuition that good gamers might make good drivers. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) and the cast list also includes David Harbour, and Josha Stradowski. One of the movie’s key scenes is filmed right here in the Dubai Autodrome, faithfully retelling a turning point in Mardenborough’s career.

Race 3 (2018)

Race 3 was not the first and certainly won’t be the last of the big-budget Indian movies shot in Abu Dhabi. This explosive action flick has a cast list that includes Bollywood legends Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol. The story follows an uncle and nephew team who are embroiled in the arms trade. They battle with ferocious competitors, betrayals and a dream to return to India safely. The movie was shot in six different locations in the capital, including Emirates Palace, W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island (at the time known as Yas Viceroy), the St Regis Abu Dhabi, ADNEC, Emirates Steel and Liwa.

WELLNESS CALLING

A weekend for your mind, body and soul

WORDS: LANA DU

If your idea of a good weekend involves movement, music and a bit of headspace, Kayan Wellness Festival fits perfectly.

Back on Fahid Island this February, it brings together yoga by the water, breathwork sessions, live music, expert-led talks and feel-good food across three days.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT

Kayan – Arabic for “essence” –focuses on the core of wellbeing.

Created with LINKVIVA and the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, the festival draws on the emirate’s cultural roots while keeping its approach modern. The result is a space that feels open, human and welcoming, whether you’re a wellness regular or just starting to explore.

A LOOK BACK

Kayan returned in 2025 with a bang, welcoming over 11,500 visitors for a weekend of movement, meditation, talks and live music. The festival struck a chord with the community and set the tone for an even bigger, more ambitious edition in 2026.

What’s new for 2026

The 2026 edition takes everything up a notch. Over three days, Kayan Wellness Festival will welcome more than 15,000 visitors, with 40-plus speakers and 60-plus sessions spread across its core pillars: mind, body and soul.

Expect a programme that moves between high-energy mornings and slower, restorative moments. Sunrise yoga, breathwork, movement practices, talks focused on mental clarity and longevity, and plenty of space to pause between sessions.

THE ZONES YOU’LL WANT TO EXPLORE

Kayan’s layout makes it easy to shape your own experience. The Mind Amphitheatre hosts talks and panel discussions led by global wellness leaders alongside regional experts. Over in the Body Zone, the focus is on movement – from yoga and Pilates to somatic practices.

For quieter moments, the Soul Space offers meditation, sound healing and breathwork sessions throughout the day. As the sun sets, The Heart becomes a shared meeting point, with live music performances bringing everyone together into the night.

FOOD, MARKETS AND MODERN WELLNESS

The 2026 edition brings more ways to explore what wellbeing looks like today. At the Longevity Hub, you can check out next-level wellness tools, hear insights from science and health experts, and pick up practical tips for long-term vitality.

The Feel Good Market is back with a mix of wellness brands, conscious shopping, and over 20 food and drink stalls designed to keep you nourished.

And the best part? Families join the fun, too. The Kids’ Hideout brings playful workshops and parent-child sessions, turning the weekend into something for everyone.

Mental toughness, fresh socks and Pot Noodles will be crucial in Michael Logue’s record-breaking attempt to run across the UAE in under five days

WORDS: ROB CHILTON

Michael Logue sips a sparkling water and puts his feet up. He’s having a rest day.

Two days before meeting What’s On, the Englishman ran 50K in 4 hours and 10 minutes in preparation for the hardest challenge of his life. On February 21 Logue will attempt to run from Fujairah across the seven Emirates to the UAE/

Saudi Arabia border in under five days, a distance of 630K. That’s the equivalent of running three marathons every day. For five days

“The current record is five days and 11 hours… but I want to do it in under five days, even if my time is four days, 23 hours and 59 minutes. If I don’t … I’ll be furious,” he smiles.

The 33-year-old plans to start each day at 3am. On completing a 10K block he’ll take a food break, which could be crisps, cans of Coca-Cola or Pot Noodles – a nutritionist’s nightmare. “I need food with a good amount of calories that’s easy to digest,” he explains.

After his recent 50K – his first ever ultra marathon – Logue immediately went to McDonald’s and ordered a large Big Mac meal, two double cheeseburgers, a spicy chicken burger, and six chicken nuggets. “I demolished it,” he says with a grin.

On The Road

Accompanying Logue on his challenge will be a support team including a sports therapist, three videographers, a driver, an admin assistant, and his girlfriend Marie. “She’s aware I might have tantrums here and there,” smiles Logue. Leading the team is Chris Taylor, a former colleague from the Royal Marines who’ll shadow Logue on a bicycle. Taylor has completed endurance challenges himself and has supported other athletes on theirs. Logue has always loved running and made the England youth athletics squad as a teenager before injuries curtailed his prospects. “When I was younger,” he says, “if I was in a bad mood, my mum would tell me to go for a run. When I run I go into a meditative state and I’m in my own bubble.”

Push It

01 Trainers: “I’ll bring 10 to 15 pairs of Saucony shoes. Some will be carbon plated and some will be easy running shoes.”

Five years in the Royal Marines equipped Logue to handle mental and physical hardship better than most. He recalls one training exercise in which he had to spend five days on the run from teams of trackers and dogs, in deep English winter. At the end of the punishing week, Logue was subjected to a mock interrogation in which he had to remember a detailed backstory.

“In terms of fitness and mental toughness, I’d say I’m probably as good as anyone can be.” This grit has helped Logue win numerous international Hyrox events and endurance races, experiences which he channels into his work with clients at Athlete Fitness Dubai, the gym he owns in Al Quoz.

As he enters the final few weeks of training, Logue says, “My biggest fear is failure. I won’t be embarrassed if I fail, but I’ve set myself up to finish this. I’m sure every day I’ll wake up and think what I’m doing is pretty stupid.”

KIT LIST

02 Clothing: “I’ll bring about 20 shorts, 20 tops, and 20 pairs of socks from a French brand called Cruel Pancake.”

03 Oakley sunglasses.

04 Hat and SPF: “I went for a run the other day and got sunstroke, which knocked me out

What do you pack to run 630K in five days? and got sunstroke, Michael Logue

for a full day, so a hat is important.”

05 Apple AirPods: “I’ll listen to audiobooks, podcasts, music and maybe some talks from [motivational speaker] David Goggins.”

06 Runner’s belt.

07 High vis jacket: “I’ll need this in the evenings. We’ve booked hotels that are either on the side of the road or a 10-minute drive away.”

Food, culture, tech and adventure – the travel moments not to miss in 2026

WORDS: YI-HWA HANNA

01

Take a street food tour

Street food offers one of the fastest ways to understand a place – it’s a glimpse into the cultural soul of how people eat and gather day to day. One of the best ways to experience the melting pot of the UAE’s expat-rich culture is with Frying Pan Adventures, compressing history and delicious bites into a few walkable hours. Eating at hidden gems where locals eat offers a unique insight beyond the headline attractions. Whether you’re passing through on a business trip, on holiday, or just playing tourist as you rediscover the city, street food tours make a compelling case for stepping off the usual route.

Motorsport distils speed, strategy and innovation into a high-stakes environment where every second counts, and events like the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and Bahrain Grand Prix are powerful drivers for the regional tourism industry. F1’s 2026 season will once again feature 24 rounds that begin in Melbourne, Australia on 6 March, and conclude in Abu Dhabi, UAE on 6 December. The Bahrain Grand Prix 2026 will take place from 10-12 April in Sakhir.

Wellness travel increasingly focuses on ways to regulate our stress, sleep, attention and nervous systems, rather than indulgence. Taking place amidst the natural wonders of the ancient landscape, AlUla Wellness Festival – which typically runs for about two weeks – offers holistic experiences like yoga, meditation, music and desert adventures alongside fitness classes. While the 2026 edition’s dates have yet to be announced, the festival is typically held from late October to early November.

07

Travel by rail

Etihad Rail is set to enter its passenger era in 2026. The 900km network connecting all seven emirates will begin carrying passengers from the Saudi border to Fujairah, initially linking 11 cities across the country. Saudi Arabia’s first ultra-luxury train, Dream of the Desert, will also launch in 2026 and will operate five curated routes across the kingdom, complete with fine dining.

08

Take a flying taxi

Dubai will be launching its first commercial air taxi services in early 2026. The service will be bookable via an app, with rides priced akin to premium ride-hailing services. There are four vertiports scheduled within the initial network, at Dubai International Airport (DXB), Palm Jumeirah, Downtown Dubai and Dubai Marina.

09

Up your style quotient

While we’ll have to wait until 2027 for the next edition of Dubai Watch Week, in 2026, you can catch the brand-new Dubai Mall Festival of Fashion from 29-30 January, and Dubai Fashion Week from 1-6 February.

Be well-read

The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature – the Arab World’s largest celebration of the written and spoken word – has evolved into a major cultural anchor in the region and the 2026 edition will be held at the InterContinental Dubai Festival City from 21 to 27 January.

Witness a world first

When plans for Dubai’s first-ever 3D printed mosque were first announced in January 2023, the news made headlines around the world. This landmark project is a world-first, as the first fully-functional mosque built with 3D printing technology. Designed by JT+Partners, it can hold up to 499 worshippers and is expected to open by the second quarter of 2026.

12

Walk the red carpet

Events such as the Red Sea International Film Festival, Istanbul Film Festival, and El Gouna Film Festival place the Middle East firmly within the global cinematic circuit, spotlighting regional talent alongside international premieres.

13

Travel by water

Cruises can give us a sense of efficiency by offering the chance to visit multiple destinations without having to deal with constant packing, airport transfers, or logistics. New itineraries entering Middle Eastern ports include those by Celestyal, MSC Cruises and Saudi Arabia’s homegrown AROYA Cruises.

14

Take a thrill ride

Having opened at the very end of 2025, Six Flags in Saudi Arabia’s Qiddiya is an immense new tourism attraction that represents the kingdom’s push to anchor entertainment within large-scale economic diversification. The park has six themed lands, 28 rides and the world’s fastest, tallest, and longest roller coaster.

15

Experience the tech of the future

The Middle East is fast emerging as one of the most tech-forward corners of the world, and the region’s innovation hubs –such as the upcoming Jaddaf Urban Tech District, a net-zero carbon innovation hub set to be the world’s largest urban tech district – provide insight into where industries – and careers – are heading. Events such as LEAP and DeepFest in Saudi Arabia, Dubai Esports and Games Festival, and the Dubai Future Foundation’s annual Dubai Future Forum bring together technologists, pioneers, policymakers, entrepreneurs and investors shaping tomorrow’s systems.

16

Watch the game of inches

Elite sport is a masterclass in marginal gains and there are few better ways to enjoy this than with a good game of golf. Tournaments such as the LIV Golf Riyadh (next held from 4 to 7 February at Riyadh Golf Club) attract the world’s top players, along with a host of global business leaders and decision-makers keen to network beyond the fairways.

Embrace mountain life

The Middle East’s mountain regions give residents and travellers alike the chance for respite from the intensity of our urban environments. Destinations such as Hatta, Jebel Hafeet, Ras Al Khaimah, and Saudi Arabia’s emerging Aseer region continue to combine outdoor adventure with growing hospitality infrastructure, from glamping experiences that allow you to see the night sky to the world’s longest zipline.

19

Indulge in fine food

The Middle East’s dining scene continues to mature, with chef-driven concepts, hyper-local sourcing and experimental formats gaining momentum. The Michelin Guide Food Festival brings together a range of world-class chefs, signature dishes and culinary creativity that foodies won’t want to miss, taking place in the grounds of Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental in late October or November each year.

20

17

Treat your inner AV geek

While the Dubai Airshow only takes place once every two years – and its next edition won’t be until 2027 – in the meantime, events such as MEBAA (8-10 December at the UAE’s DWC Dubai Airshow Site), Air Expo Abu Dhabi (October, at Abu Dhabi’s ADNEC Centre), and SAHA Istanbul (5-9 May at Istanbul Expo Centre, Türkiye) are all taking place again in 2026, ready to wow aviation enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.

Dine by fire

Fire-based cooking is one of humanity’s oldest culinary techniques and its recent revival speaks to a growing desire for authenticity and elemental experiences. Try it at Ras Al Khaimah’s Red Rock BBQ, a rugged open-flame experience that uses locally-sourced ingredients in a menu inspired by the emirate’s geology and flora.

21

Surf in the desert

Learn a new skill by going surfing at one of the UAE’s world-class facilities that allow you to surf in the desert. Surf Abu Dhabi boasts the world’s longest and most advanced man-made wave pool, while in Dubai, the highlyanticipated Surfbase Dubai is expected to open in 2026, which will be the city’s first-ever indoor surfing spot. Located at CityLand Mall, it’s planned to be the world’s largest indoor surf club, with a wave machine capable of producing waves up to 3m high and 30m wide. In Saudi Arabia, Surftopia – the country’s first surf park – is in Qiddiya City and uses tech from Endless Surf: a pneumatic system-based next-gen wave pool technology also used at o2 SURFTOWN MUC in Germany, and that will feature at the UK’s upcoming Surf London.

22

Fly a new airline

Riyadh Air’s much-anticipated launch at the end of 2025 marks a significant moment in Saudi Arabia’s aviation ambitions. The airline continues to expand its fleet this year.

Thousands of tourists head to the ancient destination to witness this spectacular experience every year, when it takes place on 22 February and 22 October.

24

Whether you’re enjoying a bit of retail therapy between meetings, catching up with a colleague at one of the mall’s 200+ dining venues, or enjoying its entertainment facilities with your family, it’s a prime representation of the UAE’s thriving experience-led economy.

SO/ Ras Al Khaimah

A resort elevating the allinclusive concept

WORDS: ALICE HOLTHAM-PARGIN

THE SETTING

At the gateway to Marjan Island sits SO/ Ras Al Khaimah, the first in a series of high-profile openings coming to the isle over the next 18 months. The beachfront property unrolls along Marjan Beach, and is cleverly designed so that all of its rooms, suites and leisure facilities face the sea and the rapidly-changing Marjan Island skyline.

THE ARRIVAL

We’re welcomed into a bright, kaleidoscopically-hued lobby that leans into SO/ Hotels’ stylish roots. Check-in is swift and friendly, a watermelon juice and a refreshing towel greet us while the all-inclusive concept – and the roster of activities available during our stay – are explained. But should you happen to forget, everything is accessible on the QR code handily printed on the room key.

THE ROOM

We’re upgraded to a ninth-floor signature club room. It’s bright and spacious, flooded with natural light from the stretching sea views. Where the public spaces are a rainbow of colour, our room is more muted, calmer, its colour palette inspired by the desert and ocean landscapes of the emirate. The balcony looking out over the expansive resort grounds serves as a great spot to

watch the sun set, and we loved the nightly turndown service where a silky scrunchie and eye mask were left on the pillow.

THE FOOD AND DRINK

Elevating the all-inclusive concept far beyond a boring buffet, there are plenty of places to eat and drink. The Market serves as a typical all-day dining restaurant, with modern interiors and an expansive terrace, serving a plentiful breakfast buffet that showcases fragrant curries and pizza as well as all the typical breakfast dishes. For lunch, we head to Cabini, set adjacent to the family pool, where crowd-pleasing eats include nachos with homemade guacamole and a steak sandwich served with chunky chips. Dinner at Chiano, a beautiful Italian restaurant, is a real highlight. Although it’s too cold to enjoy the pretty alfresco terrace, the cosy vibe inside is instantly welcoming. We peruse the à la carte menu before ordering a creamy mushroom risotto with subtle truffle notes and a beef ragu – both are excellent. For dessert, the deconstructed pavlova is a must-try.

Those looking to make the most of the all-inclusive offering can expect plenty of bars, from the sultrily lit Savant on the top

floor to Bungalow, which sits next to the adults-only pool.

A special mention should be given to the entertainment – despite the hotel’s infancy, music has been well curated across the property, from the sounds of a harp playing during afternoon tea at The Concept Store – SO/ Ras Al Khaimah’s lobby lounge, to an electric violin at Chiano and live percussion poolside at adults-only

THE ACTIVITIES

Two pools, a children’s splash pool, a golden stretch of beach lined with loungers – this resort is made to make the most of its seaside location. Although it’s worth noting the pools don’t get sun until the afternoon, so mornings are best enjoyed on the beach. Alongside the sea-facing fitness centre, impressive outdoor gym complete with juice bar and a pavilion for instructor-led workouts, the daily fitness activities also include boxing classes, water aerobics, aerial yoga and a retreat experience, the latter we join for a rejuvenating Sunday morning of yoga and breathwork.

There’s also daily art workshops, which range from candle making to vision boarding and ceramic sculpture – so it’s impossible to get bored.

WHAT’S ON THE BILL

A one-night stay in February starts from Dhs2,250 based on an entry-level Sea View all-inclusive room.

About Ramadan KNOW YOUR STUFF

Ramadan is likely to begin on February 18 (depending on the sighting of the crescent moon), with Eid al-Fitr celebrations expected to commence on March 20. Even if you’re not personally observing Ramadan, it’s still important to be respectful towards those who are. Here’s what you need to know...

What is Ramadan?

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a time when Muslims around the world abstain from eating, drinking or smoking between sunrise and sunset.

Lasting about a month, it marks the time when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Extra tarawih prayers are performed at the mosque throughout Ramadan and each evening 1/30th of the holy book is recited. By the end of Ramadan, observers will have read the entire Qur’an.

Why is Ramadan so important to Muslims?

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, considered mandatory by believers. The pillars are the framework by which Muslims everywhere live, and Ramadan is considered the holiest time in the Islamic calendar. It

is a time for prayer, reflection and religious devotion, to cleanse past sins and to focus on Allah through good deeds.

Why do Muslims fast?

Fasting, or sawn, loosely translates as ‘to refrain’. So during Ramadan Muslims commit to not eating, drinking or smoking during daylight hours. But sawn isn’t just about physical restraint, it also refers to bad thoughts, actions and words.

Ramadan is often a time to spend with family, breaking fast at sunset. The fast itself is intended to help Muslims learn about selfdiscipline and enable them to empathise with those who have less.

Must everyone fast?

For Muslims, everyone is required to fast, but there are exceptions. Young children, pregnant women and the elderly and infirm

KNOW YOUR STUFF

are not required to fast due to possible health complications. Women on their monthly cycle do not fast, nor do people who are ill. If there is a temporary break in the fast, Muslims are required to make up the missed days after Ramadan.

Non-Muslims are not required to fast. However, they should behave sensitively throughout Ramadan, and be consierate of those around them who may be fasting during the Holy Month.

Does everything close during the day?

Restaurants largely remain open during Ramadan, but may change their opening times, so it’s best to call ahead at the venue. Everything

tends to happen much later in the day during Ramadan. Malls stay open later than usual. Some restaurants also may stay open later, to accommodate for suhoor. Ramadan tents are also a popular addition to many restaurants and hotels.

Do I need to do anything differently during the day?

It’s important for everyone to dress and behave appropriately during the Holy Month. Even those who aren’t fasting should make sure that their clothes are modest, covering shoulders, chest and knees. Keep music levels down to a minimum and, of course, no public displays of affection. 01

Testimony of faith

Religious devotion to Allah as the one God and Mohammad (PBUH) as the messenger. 02 Prayer

The promise to pray at the required five times every day.

03 Zakat Muslims are taught to give a certain percentage of their wealth to charity.

RAMADAN GLOSSARY PILLARS OF ISLAM

IFTAR

SUNNAH

The teachings and practices of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Eating dates to break fast, for example, is a sunnah.

04

Fasting during Ramadan

This is an annual commitment that Muslims follow. 05

All Muslims are obliged to do hajj, the trip to Mecca, at least once in a lifetime.
