Originally from Connecticut, Calvin and Delene spent many years raising their four children while Calvin built a successful career as the owner and CEO of Polder Products LLC After 37 years of leadership, Calvin recently retired, and the couple began a new chapter relocating to Boynton Beach, Florida, and choosing to spend their summers enjoying the beauty and serenity of Union Hall.
The Scotts share a passion for golf, boating, and travel, and are always eager to explore new adventures together. Above all, they treasure time spent with their growing family, including their children and three beloved grandchildren
Now as members of The Water’s Edge, Calvin and Delene are excited to become part of a warm and welcoming community They look forward to forging new friendships, participating in club activities, and making lifelong memories on the lake.
We currently live in Raleigh, North Carolina. Bryan grew up in Washington, DC, and Joanna is from Atlanta. While we have a home on Lake Gaston, our frequent visits to Smith Mountain Lake and especially to The Water’s Edge and Marina Bay made us fall in love with the area.
Our daughter, Jordan (27), is a UNC graduate who now works alongside Joanna in the family’s interior and exterior design business, collaborating with custom home builders and managing a flooring showroom
Our son, Connor (20), is studying biochemistry at Hamilton College in New York, where he’s also a quarterback for the football team. Both Jordan and Connor share Bryan’s passion for golf and served as captains of their high school golf teams. And, of course, our yellow lab, Brady, rounds out the family.
Joanna has been a designer in Raleigh for decades and co-owns Luxury Concepts, a flooring company serving custom home builders Bryan, an attorney and entrepreneur, is the inventor and founder of Pill Pockets, a brand of medicine delivery treats for pets Today, he serves as a Clinical Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law
Bryan is an avid golfer who also loves time on the water. Joanna enjoys exercise and fitness, and together we’re passionate Carolina Hurricanes fans. With close friends in Marina Bay and countless cherished visits to SML, we’ve always known that the beauty of the lake, the welcoming community, and the country club’s activities would one day make The Water’s Edge a special part of our lives
We are both originally from Franklin County but have also called Englewood, Colorado, Richmond, and Virginia Beach home before returning to raise our family Today, we live full-time in Rocky Mount, where we raised our two daughters. Isabelle graduated from Franklin County High School and the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!) and recently moved to Nashville to pursue a degree in Physical Therapy Emaline is a rising senior at Franklin County High School, and we are enjoying visiting colleges with her as she prepares for her next chapter
Before moving to The Water’s Edge, we lived on 10 acres along Gills Creek but eventually decided we wanted less property and more time to enjoy the lake. Finding our home here was the perfect fit and the community has been the greatest bonus. Having both grown up on Smith Mountain Lake, we’ve loved watching it transform from quiet waterski runs past grazing cows into the vibrant golf and lake community it is today
As a family, we love being outdoors whether it’s water or snow skiing, learning to wakesurf, or playing pickleball together I grew up riding hunter jumpers and passed that passion along to the girls, especially Isabelle. Emaline has found her love in lacrosse and is looking forward to her senior season. Will grew up playing football, basketball, and tennis, and even went on to play football at Bridgewater College
Professionally, Will has practiced law in Rocky Mount for more than 25 years with Davis, Davis, Davis & Davis a firm founded by his great-grandfather in 1891 He is proud to be the fourth generation to carry on that tradition I joined the firm 14 years ago to oversee operations and marketing, which means Will takes direction from me both at work and at home!
A few fun facts: Will and I actually went to preschool together (though we didn’t start dating until college) He was also a lifeguard at The Water’s Edge the very first year the pool opened. Today, in addition to his law practice, Will is a member of the Virginia House of Delegates for the 39th District, which represents all of Franklin County, and is always a great resource for questions or ideas about our Water’s Edge community.
We are excited to be part of this wonderful neighborhood and look forward to meeting more of our fellow members here at The Water’s Edge!
Invitational Membership: We are still offering a limited number of invitational memberships for non-property owners The initiation fee is $40,000. Please share with your friends!
Invitational/Legacy Membership: Members who sell their property can now remain members after the sale Please call me for details
Young Executive Membership - Member's young adult children who are no longer dependents can now have their own membership. This membership classification is based upon the primary member’s account being active and in good standing No initiation fee is required with the Young Executive membership under the parents’ membership. Dues structure would be discounted. Call me at 540-524-9075 or email at RRice@watersedgecountryclub.com to discuss details.
After a busy summer traveling between The River Course and Water’s Edge, I’m excited to finally be here fulltime!
Since settling in, I’ve taken a close look at our merchandise operation and have already made a few changes. Back in June, we sent out a survey—thank you to everyone who responded! Your feedback will help us bring in the brands you want to see, while also allowing us to be smarter with size runs and quantities. Be on the lookout for “Merchandise Monday” emails for weekly specials and new arrivals.
In addition to merchandising, I love teaching. I use V1 software and an iPad to give students a visual of what I’m seeing, then provide drills to help them successfully perform the new movements. After each lesson, I send a 3–5 minute video recap so you can revisit it anytime on your phone or computer. My goal is to use clear, relatable examples that connect your mind and body—without overcomplicating things. This game is challenging enough!
I look forward to helping you improve your game!

We are planning to convert all short-cut turf areas—from tees to fairways—from bentgrass to Bermudagrass. This change will allow the course to perform at a much higher level in summer conditions, providing firmer, more consistent playing surfaces.
Project Timeline & Key Phases
Fall 2025: We will spray out areas currently contaminated with common Bermudagrass to eliminate unwanted competition. Shortly after, we will overseed all short-cut areas with perennial ryegrass to maintain quality playing conditions through fall, winter, and spring.
May 2026: Our annual Member/Guest tournament will be held in mid-May as planned. June 2026: Immediately following Memorial Day weekend, the course will close to prepare for Bermudagrass sprigging. The conversion will be done on all 18 holes at the same time to control costs and return the course to peak condition as quickly as possible.
The grow-in period will take approximately 10–12 weeks, with our goal to reopen by Labor Day weekend.
During this time, we will also begin upgrades to the practice facility. Golf course architect Richard Mandell—who was involved in previous projects at The Water’s Edge—has been retained to assist with design modifications, including:
A redesigned first hole – Currently considered the weakest hole on the course, this redesign will improve its strategy, aesthetics, and overall playing experience.
Relocating the putting green and expanding the driving range tee – Moving these closer to the clubhouse will increase available space, allow for more natural turf usage, and reduce the need to hit from mats.
It’s hard to believe summer is winding down, but what a season we’ve had! From sunny fairways to a few “interesting” weather days, your energy, sportsmanship, and laughter have made this year truly special
We hope that you will join us for our Ladies Closing Day, Thursday, October 9 It’s hard to believe it seems like the season just opened th
We’ve enjoyed a great lineup of events from our weekly play days to our themed tournaments and special outings Congratulations to everyone who took home prizes, but more importantly, thank you for bringing your smiles and making each round so much fun. We are so grateful for our friendly and hard-working Golf Shop staff your efforts make every event and play day a success.

Day 1: Preferred Drive
Day 2: Best Ball Net
Points from both days were combined for an overall team total We’re proud to share that our team battled hard and finished 7th out of 12 a great showing in a competitive field!

Front row: Nancy Erikson, Karen Grimm and Victoria Rosenberg
By now, you should have received a letter from corporate regarding the upcoming golf course renovations These improvements have been a long time coming, and as a “summertime” property, the timing will allow us to have the best possible playing conditions during our peak season
This fall, our focus will be on eliminating the common Bermuda grass found throughout the course especially in areas like the 9th, 13th, and 14th fairways, as well as on certain tees. Once these applications are complete, we’ll follow up with ryegrass seeding to ensure high-quality playing surfaces through Memorial Day
During the winter months, we will move into necessary tree removal to increase sunlight exposure, helping us achieve the healthy, consistent turf we’re aiming for
I greatly appreciate your patience during this process The short-term disruption will be well worth it once you see the final results More updates will be shared as the work progresses.
Divots: Our cool-season turf does best when divots are replaced and stepped down firmly. Even if only part of the divot is intact, please replace what you can and sand the rest and give it a quick smooth with your foot. This small step helps protect mower blades and keeps our fairways looking their best.
Ball Marks: A quick way to make a big difference repair your ball mark and one more If everyone did this, we’d have virtually no ball mark issues It’s an easy way to help your fellow golfers enjoy great greens
Course Access: To keep the course and tennis areas safe and in top condition, private carts, bikes, skateboards, and walking aren’t
As the golden light of summer fades into the warm colors of autumn, we’re reflecting on what an incredible season it’s been at the barn.
Trail Rides
Ring Rides
The past few months have been filled with the sound of hooves on sunny mornings, the laughter of campers, and the sight of riders beaming with pride after mastering new skills. Our summer camps were a huge success, welcoming 78 campers who brought energy, fun, and unforgettable memories to the barn From first pony rides and evening bonfires to grooming challenges, crafts, and new friendships, the summer was packed with moments of growth We watched timid riders transform into confident equestrians, proudly showing off their skills by the season’s end

If you’ve visited recently, you may have noticed that our equestrian family has grown by three horses! We now have 15 horses at the barn, the largest number we’ve ever housed, including a record-breaking seven boarded horses. We truly loved caring for the horses and creating a safe, welcoming space for them and their owners.
This year has been nothing short of amazing, and we are deeply grateful for your trust whether it’s been with your children, grandchildren, horses, or even yourself. To all the campers, parents, grandparents, and staff who made this summer so special: thank you Your enthusiasm and support make The Water’s Edge Equestrian Center more than just a riding facility you make it a community
Now, as the air turns crisp and the leaves begin to change, we are heading into one of our favorite riding seasons Cooler weather brings happy, energetic horses, and the scenic autumn trails make for magical rides for all ages
Please remember to call a day ahead when scheduling a ride to ensure availability
And a quick reminder when bringing treats, please check with barn staff before feeding the horses or pig. Equestrian Center T-shirts are still available for purchase. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Tennis proved increasingly popular this summer. Our Monday-Wednesday-Friday “drop-in” mixed doubles was well-attended and a number of both adults and children took lessons. Although summer is winding down, the good news is that tennis and pickleball will continue throughout the fall.
Tennis: Come join us for our final 2025 mixed doubles “Champagne, Strawberries and Crème” event, celebrating the U.S. Open, on Monday, Sept 7 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on tennis courts 1, 2, 3, and 4. This occasion is for all levels of play. As with other mixed doubles events, you do not need a partner to play.
Note that regular Monday-Wednesday-Friday mixed doubles begins at 8:30 a.m. for members and guests whose level of play is up to 4.0., followed by 4.0 and above players at 10:30 a.m. At other times members can reserve tennis courts in advance. To reserve a court, download the McConnell app on your Smartphone or log-in to the McConnell website.
Pickleball: Regular play is on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. The pickleball courts are available for reservation at other times on a first-come, first-served basis. Please remember to place the nets next to the fence between the courts when done playing so that they are protected from wind damage.
If you need a tennis racquet or pickleball paddle, there are extras for both adults and children in the tennis shop. Please return all borrowed equipment as soon as you are done playing. I hope to see you on the courts this fall. Be sure to check Weekly Happenings for any updates regarding special pickleball and tennis events. For either private lessons or racquet restringing, contact me at: 434-927-5039.

We’re excited to introduce Taylor, one of the newest members of our wait staff team, who has quickly become a valued part of our Water’s Edge family!
Taylor is a nursing major at Longwood University, and when she’s not in school or at work, you can often find her on the water boating with friends and family She recently learned how to operate a jet ski now one of her favorite hobbies!
In her free time, Taylor also enjoys baking and taking long walks. Originally from Northern Virginia, she recently moved to Union Hall and is still new to Smith Mountain Lake, but she’s loving getting to know the community.
Meet Natalie Knipp! Natalie has been part of The Water’s Edge crew since June 2022, starting as a housekeeper before spending the last two summers as a cart attendant. She especially enjoys the cart attendant role because it’s given her the chance to connect with so many members
A junior at Virginia Tech, Natalie is studying Human Development with plans to become an Occupational Therapist When she’s not working or studying, she enjoys cooking, helping her parents with projects, painting, working out, and listening to music
Congratulations to Jasmine Davis-Hill, our Employee of the Month for August! Jasmine has earned this honor multiple times which is a true testament to her dedication and outstanding service She joined The Water’s Edge in 2017 as part of our wait staff and is always ready to step in and help in any area she’s needed. We’re grateful for her hard work, positive attitude, and commitment to making The Water’s Edge a welcoming place for all. When it comes to dedication, Jasmine sets the bar high, bringing positive energy and the flexibility to assist across the club making her truly invaluable to the country club
Away from work, she’s a proud wife, mom to three girls, and devoted wife and dog mom When she’s not serving our members with a smile, you’ll find her cheering on her kids at sporting events, traveling with her husband for their business, attending church, or enjoying time with her family.
We’re grateful for everything she brings to our team!
It’s not every day you see four generations of the same family working side by side but right now at The Water’s Edge, time has lined up perfectly From the newest hire to the most seasoned hand, they’re all here, all together, making history one shift at a time Pictured above left to right: Za’Niya Hill, Jasmine Davis-Hill, George Davis Jr and George Davis Sr
Jason Daniels, Executive Chef at Providence Country Club
“I started making this cookie for my daughter’s 6th birthday. We were having her party at Carter Mountain. The apple orchard is located in the hills of Virginia, and I wanted to have the perfect cookie for the day. The crispy wheat shortbread with heavy-hitting seasonal spice... plain and simple, was just the ticket. Needless to say, nibbling cookies and drinking warm cider on a crisp fall day is a heartwarming endeavor. I hope that they make you smile as I am while reminiscing about this time past.” - Jason Daniels
6 ounces butter
¾ cup brown sugar
¾ cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
Directions
1 ¾ cups wheat flour
½ teaspoon salt
2 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
Pinch of nutmeg
1.In a stand mixer, combine all wet ingredients excluding the eggs and mix on medium speed until ingredients have lightened in texture and are well creamed.
2 Add eggs one at a time; remember to scrape the sides of the bowl down between and after additions
3 Turn the mixer off and add all sifted dry ingredients Start the mixer at “stir” or the 1st speed setting and mix until completely combined and homogenous. Mixing up to, but no longer than, 2 minutes. Remove and wrap with plastic. Can be refrigerated at this point and used in the future. Dough holds well for up to 7 days.
4 Transfer the dough to a floured surface and with a rolling pin, roll to ¼” in thickness Cut into desired shapes and bake at 325 for approximately 7 minutes. Allow to cool, drizzle with melted white chocolate, or dust with powdered sugar.
“This cookie is a celebration of autumn’s arrival, blending the rich, spiced flavors of pumpkin with the indulgent sweetness of chocolate chips Pumpkin is synonymous with fall, evoking cozy memories of harvest time and seasonal festivities, while chocolate adds a touch of decadence that complements the pumpkin’s earthy sweetness. As the leaves turn and the weather cools, this cookie is the perfect treat to enjoy after a satisfying lunch, bringing a taste of autumn right to your table ” - Michael Monahan
