La Maratona di Ravenna Città d’Arte giunge alla sua 26esima edizione, confermandosi come un appuntamento di riferimento nel panorama sportivo e turistico nazionale. In programma come da tradizione nel mese di novembre, l’evento rappresenta sempre un momento di sintesi tra sport, cultura e promozione territoriale, espressione autentica dello spirito romagnolo e della capacità di accoglienza che da sempre contraddistingue la città dei mosaici.
La manifestazione, che da oltre un quarto di secolo anima le vie e le piazze di Ravenna, coinvolge migliaia di atleti e appassionati provenienti da tutto il mondo, unendo la passione per la corsa alla scoperta di un patrimonio artistico e storico di straordinario valore. I percorsi di 42K, 21K e 10K si sviluppano tra i monumenti riconosciuti Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità dall’UNESCO, offrendo a ogni partecipante l’opportunità di vivere un’esperienza unica, dove la fatica dell’impresa sportiva si fonde con la bellezza del contesto urbano.

The City of Art Ravenna Marathon comes to its 26th edition, confirming itself as a reference point in the sport and touristic national scenery. Scheduled following tradition in the month of November, this event represents a melting point of sport, culture and sponsorship of our territory, as an authentic expression of the “romagnolo” spirit and of the ability to welcome that has always distinguished the city of mosaics.
The demonstration, which has given life to the streets and squares of Ravenna for over a quarter of a century, involves thousands of athletes and enthusiasts from all over the world, combining the passion for running with the discovering of an artistic and historical heritage of extraordinary value. The paths of 42K, 21K and 10K develop amongst monuments recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage, providing every participant the opportunity to live a unique experience, in which the effort of a sporting undertaking blends with the beauty of the urban scenery.
The Ravenna Marathon is today an example of an integrated event, capable of combining sport, tourism, sustainability and participation, thanks also to a series of initiatives dedicated to disability, family and four-legged friends. A result made possible by the synergy between institutions, local entities, associations and volunteers, all of which contributes every year to the success of a demonstration recognized for the quality of its organization and its territorial impact.

La Maratona Ravenna Città d’Arte è ormai divenuta un appuntamento fisso della nostra città, un evento imperdibile e molto atteso che unisce sport, passione, cultura e bellezza. Negli anni questa Maratona è cresciuta e ha saputo radicarsi attirando sportivi e semplici appassionati, tra cui moltissimi stranieri, diventando una vera e propria tappa del calendario turistico e contribuendo quindi alla destagionalizzazione.
Le caratteristiche di questo evento sono davvero uniche: chi partecipa può attraversare le meraviglie del nostro centro storico, immergendosi nella storia bizantina e nelle nostre risorse naturali, e ricevere una medaglia realizzata a mano con preziose tessere di mosaico. Le diverse declinazioni, che offrono percorsi adatti
alle famiglie e che sono inclusive dei propri amici a quattro zampe, rendono questo evento adatto a tutti; a completare l’offerta, la possibilità di allungare il soggiorno per visitare la Biennale del Mosaico.
Quest’anno, inoltre, in occasione della Maratona, la città ospiterà un doppio appuntamento all’insegna dello sport, dell’inclusione e della festa: l’arrivo delle Torce Olimpica e Paralimpica di Milano Cortina 2026, un’opportunità che inserisce Ravenna nel percorso che condurrà l’Italia verso questo importante appuntamento. The Ravenna City of Art Marathon has become at this point a stable engagement in our city, an unmissable and highly anticipated event that unites sport, passion, culture and beauty. Through the years, the Marathon has grown and has been able to take root by attracting both sporty and passionate people, including a lot of foreigners, becoming a real calendar stage for tourists and therefore helping deseasonalization.
This event’s features are really unique: those who participate can go through the wonders of our historical center, immersing themselves in Byzantine history e in our natural resources, and receive a hand-made medal with precious mosaic tiles. The different declinations, which offer suitable paths for families and are inclusive for their four-legged friends, make this event suitable for everybody; to complete the offer, there is the possibility to lengthen the stay and visit the Biennial of Mosaic. Moreover, this year on the occasion of the Marathon, the city will host a double event dedicated to sport, to inclusion and to festivity: the arrival of the Olympic and Paralympic Torch for Milano Cortina 2026, an opportunity to put Ravenna on the route that will lead Italy through this important event. As Mayor, but also as Sport Councilor, I therefore invite to participate in an event that strengthen the relationship between sport and community, also promoting a lifestyle that is active, sustainable and inclusive, capable of showing all the beauties that Ravenna can carry.

Sabato 8 novembre torniamo a correre e camminare insieme a mamma, papà, zii e nonni con la Family Run, una corsa di circa 2 km all’insegna del benessere e dei sorrisi. L’evento si svolgerà ancora una volta al Pala De André, davanti all’ingresso della biglietteria, dove il grande spazio esterno dell’Expo Marathon Village ospiterà una coloratissima mattinata di festa. La giornata sarà arricchita dalla nuova Shake Out Run e dalla divertente maratonina a sei zampe Dogs & Run. Il via è fissato alle ore 10.15: un appuntamento da vivere e ricordare insieme.

The event will once again take place at the Pala De André, in front of the ticket office entrance, where the large outdoor space of the Expo Marathon Village will host a colorful morning of celebration. The day will be enriched by the new Shake Out Run and the fun Dogs & Run half marathon for six-legged friends. The start is set for 10:15 am: an event to experience and remember together.

It’s Dogs & Run, the traditional six-legged marathon where dogs and families parade side by side, on Saturday, November 8th, starting around 12:00 p.m., at the end of the Family Run, in front of the Pala De André ticket office.
All participants will receive a goody bag full of goodies and giveaways, so they can continue enjoying moments of play and companionship with their best friend.
Maratona di Ravenna Città d’Arte sarà anche quest’anno un appuntamento aperto davvero a tutti, senza alcuna distinzione. Questo è l’obiettivo dell’iniziativa “Correndo senza Frontiere”, nata per aprire le porte a tutte le persone con disabilità. Un progetto nato all’interno del “Coordinamento per l’attività motoria e sportiva adattata alla persona con disabilità intellettiva” creato nel 2016 dal CSI di Ravenna e dalla Cooperativa Sociale “La Pieve”, rivolto ad atleti con disabilità e dedicato alla promozione dell’inclusione sociale. Domenica 9 novembre, all’insegna dello slogan “lo sport è per tutti”, un breve tragitto che porterà gli atleti disabili, ed i loro accompagnatori, a percorrere circa 3 km del percorso della Maratona nel centro storico, sino ad arrivare al traguardo di Via di Roma prima del sopraggiungere dei runner delle diverse distanze. This year, the Ravenna City of Art Marathon will once again be an event truly open to everyone, without distinction. This is the goal of the “Running Without Borders” initiative, created to open its doors to all people with disabilities.
This project, born within the “Coordination for Physical Activity and Sports Adapted to People with Intellectual Disabilities” initiative, was created in 2016 by the Ravenna CSI (Italian Sports Federation) and the “La Pieve” Social Cooperative. It is aimed at athletes with disabilities and is dedicated to promoting social inclusion.
On Sunday, November 9th, under the slogan “Sport is for everyone,” a short run will take disabled athletes and their companions along approximately 3 km of the Marathon route in the historic center, arriving at the finish line on Via di Roma before the runners of the various distances arrive. LE MEDAGLIE
Il nuovo capolavoro d’arte bizantina porta ancora la firma di Annafietta, che dal 2011 realizza a mano autentiche icone del mosaico ravennate. Anche la medaglia della Maratona di Ravenna Città d’Arte 2025 nasce nella sua bottega artigianale, a pochi passi dalla Basilica di San Vitale, e trae ispirazione da uno dei mosaici parietali più celebri custoditi al suo interno. Il design si ispira alle cornici decorative tipiche dei mosaici paleocristiani, che delimitavano i pannelli narrativi dei muri completamente rivestiti in tessere. Il motivo scelto per la nuova medaglia riprende proprio una cornice a piramide incrociata, che avvolge il corpo centrale in un elegante equilibrio di rosso e oro, i colori protagonisti di questa edizione.
Rispetto al passato, la medaglia 2025 presenta una forma verticale e un messaggio simbolico: la cornice diventa elemento di unione e continuità, richiamo alla forza espressiva dei mosaici che illuminano da secoli i monumenti ravennati, oggi Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità Unesco. Come da tradizione il riconoscimento ai finisher sarà proposto in tre versioni, una per ciascuna gara, ma con dimensioni e mosaici diversi pur mantenendo al suo interno le tessere rosse e oro rendendola un gioiello unico.

E per rendere questo ricordo ancora più personale, domenica sarà possibile incidere sul retro della medaglia il proprio nome e il tempo di gara, trasformandola così in un simbolo unico della propria impresa sportiva.

WORLD ATHLETICS
La World Athletics, precedentemente denominata International Association of Athletics Federations o IAAF, è la federazione internazionale dell’atletica leggera che si occupa di monitorare le federazioni nazionali e di organizzare le competizioni internazionali.
Possiede anche l’incarico di normare le regole per lo sport, della certificazione delle strutture e del riconoscimento e della gestione dei primati mondiali. Le World Athletics Label Road Races sono corse su strada annuali patrocinate dalla World Athletics come le più importanti nel loro genere e anche quest’anno Maratona di Ravenna ha ricevuto questa label!
The new masterpiece of Byzantine art still bears the signature of Annafietta, who has been handcrafting authentic Ravenna mosaic icons since 2011. The medal for the 2025 Ravenna City of Art Marathon was also created in her artisan workshop, just steps from the Basilica of San Vitale, and draws inspiration from one of the most famous wall mosaics housed there.
The design is inspired by the decorative frames typical of early Christian mosaics, which bordered the narrative panels of walls completely covered in tesserae. The motif chosen for the new medal features a crossed pyramid frame, enveloping the central body in an elegant balance of red and gold, the key colors of this edition.
Compared to the past, the 2025 medal features a vertical shape and a symbolic message: the frame becomes an element of unity and continuity, a reference to the expressive power of the mosaics that have illuminated Ravenna’s monuments, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for centuries.
As per tradition, the finisher recognition will be offered in three versions, one for each race, but with different sizes and mosaics while maintaining the red and gold tiles, making it a unique jewel.
And to make this memory even more personal, on Sunday it will be possible to engrave your name and race time on the back of the medal, thus transforming it into a unique symbol of your sporting achievement. 2 0 2 5

WORLD ATHLETICS
“Un’etichetta World Athletics denota standard elevati nell’organizzazione dell’evento, nella sicurezza e nell’esperienza dei corridori. Inoltre, certifica la qualità dell’applicazione del Regolamento World Athletics e in particolare del Regolamento di gara e del tecnico. Infine, assicura che l’evento sia dalla parte del sostegno delle autorità pubbliche all’evento e sia favorevole all’impegno finanziario a favore dell’antidoping”.
Queste sono le parole riprese dal regolamento ufficiale delle gare riconosciute da World Athtletics e per Maratona di Ravenna è un onore aver ricevuto un riconoscimento così importante!
ABBOTT WORLD MARATHON MAJORS
Anche quest’anno la Maratona di Ravenna farà parte del calendario globale degli eventi di qualificazione per le classifiche mondiali Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group. Il circuito, che permette a runner dai 40 anni in poi di guadagnare punti classifica per la partecipazione all’Abbott WMM Wanda Age Group World Championships del 2026.
World Athletics, formerly the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), is the international governing body for athletics, responsible for overseeing national federations and organizing international competitions.
It is also responsible for establishing the rules of the sport, certifying facilities, and recognizing and managing world records. The World Athletics Label Road Races are annual road races sponsored by World Athletics as the most important of their kind, and this year the Ravenna Marathon received this label again!
“A World Athletics Label denotes high standards in event organization, safety, and runner experience. Furthermore, it certifies the quality of the application of the World Athletics Rules, particularly the Race Rules and the Coach. Finally, it ensures that the event supports public authorities and is supportive of financial commitment to anti-doping.”
These are the words taken from the official regulations of the races recognized by World Athletics, and for the Ravenna Marathon it is an honor to have received such an important recognition!

The 26th edition of the Ravenna City of Art Marathon has also received the “Ecoactions” certification issued by Ambiente e Salute Società Benefit, under the supervision of Legambiente Nazionale. This certification certifies the event as having a low environmental impact. This important milestone was achieved thanks to the ongoing commitment to sustainable practices.

Anche la 26esima edizione della Maratona di Ravenna Città d’Arte si correrà in uno scrigno di storia che conserva testimonianze preziose del passato, nel quale Ravenna è stata tre volte Capitale dell’Impero Romano d’occidente: saranno 42 Km tra le meraviglie della storia e dell’arte bizantina. Confermati sia la partenza dal Pala de André, che l’arrivo in via di Roma. Come ogni anno il percorso della Maratona di Ravenna terrà fede alla sua etichetta di “Città d’Arte” e, per scelta di Ravenna Runners Club e dell’Amministrazione comunale, toccherà tutti gli otto siti paleocristiani iscritti al Patrimonio Mondiale dell’UNESCO dal 1996 e quindi, Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità.
Otto gioielli della storia e dell’arte che Ravenna apre al mondo non più come suo patrimonio, ma come bene dell’umanità intera.
MAUSOLEO DI TEODORICO – Dopo aver solcato per la prima volta nella storia della Maratona di Ravenna il quartiere San Giuseppe (ex Villaggio Anic), circa al nono km si può ammirare il Mausoleo di Teodorico, fatto costruire dallo stesso Teodorico nel 520 d.C. come propria sepoltura, interamente realizzato in blocchi di pietra d’Istria. La costruzione si articola in due ordini sovrapposti, entrambi decagonali. Al di sopra del mausoleo si innalza una grande cupola monolitica, coronata da dodici anse recanti i nomi di otto Apostoli e di quattro Evangelisti.
BATTISTERO DEGLI ARIANI - Entrati nel meraviglioso centro storico della città, il percorso incontra il Battistero degli Ariani. L’edificio, interrato per circa 2,3 metri, ha forma ottagonale e presenta quattro piccole absidi all’esterno. Al suo interno l’unica parte ancora decorata è la cupola rivestita di mosaici raffiguranti il corteo dei dodici apostoli e il battesimo di Cristo, immerso nell’acqua fino ai fianchi.
MAUSOLEO DI GALLA PLACIDIA – Successivamente tutte e tre le distanze proseguono sino a sfiorare il Mausoleo di Galla Placidia circa al tredicesimo km. Un edificio che emana un’atmosfera magica. Le innumerevoli stelle della cupola hanno colpito nel corso dei secoli la fantasia e la sensibilità dei visitatori tanto che si narra che Cole Porter, in viaggio di nozze a Ravenna, rimase talmente colpito dall’atmosfera del piccolo mausoleo e dalle sue stelle, da comporre la sua famosissima canzone Night and Day.
BASILICA DI SAN VITALE - Pochi metri ed ecco la Basilica di San Vitale, uno dei monumenti più importanti dell’arte paleocristiana in Italia. Fondata su ordine del vescovo Ecclesio, la basilica a pianta ottagonale fu consacrata nel 548 dall’arcivescovo Massimiano. All’interno magnifiche decorazioni musive nell’abside, e affreschi barocchi nella cupola.
CAPPELLA DI S. ANDREA - Proseguendo si arriva dinanzi al Duomo, cattedrale relativamente recente costruita tra il 1734 e il 1745, sede dell’arcidiocesi di Ravenna e Cervia. Nel vicino Palazzo Arcivescovile è situata la Cappella di S. Andrea, unico esempio di cappella arcivescovile paleocristiana giunta integra a noi, costruita da Pietro II e dedicata originariamente a Cristo e in seguito intitolata a Sant’Andrea, le cui reliquie erano state trasportate da Costantinopoli a Ravenna nel VI secolo.
A ROUTE ALWAYS LINED WITH SITES RECOGNIZED AS WORLD HERITAGE
Once again, the 26st edition of the “City of Art” Ravenna Marathon will be run in a treasure trove of history, that keeps precious testimony of the past, a past in which Ravenna has been Capital of the Western Roman Empire three times: it will be 42 km among the wonders of Byzantine history and art. The starting location of the Pala de André has been confirmed, as has the finish line in Via di Roma. Like every year, the route of the Ravenna Marathon will live up to its label of “City of Art” and, by choice of Ravenna Runners Club and the municipal Administration, it will touch all eight early Christian sites registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1996 and therefore, World Heritage Sites. Eight jewels of history and art that Ravenna opens to the world not as its own heritage, but as heritage to all of humanity.
MAUSOLEUM OF THEODORIC – After having crossed the San Giuseppe district (former Anic Village) for the first time in the history of the Ravenna Marathon, around the ninth km you can admire the Mausoleum of Theodoric, built by Theodoric himself in 520 AD. as one’s own tomb, entirely made of Istrian stone blocks. The construction is divided into two superimposed orders, both decagonal. Above the mausoleum rises a large monolithic dome, crowned by twelve handles bearing the names of eight Apostles and four Evangelists.
ARIANI BAPTISTERY
- Once entered the marvelous historic center of the city, the route meets the Arian Baptistery. The building, approximately 2.3 meters underground, has an octagonal shape and has four small apses on the outside. Inside, the only part still decorated is the dome covered in mosaics depicting the procession of the twelve apostles and the baptism of Christ, immersed in water up to his hips.
MAUSOLEUM OF GALLA PLACIDIA – Subsequently all three distances continue until they touch the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia at around the thirteenth km. A building that exudes a magical atmosphere. The countless stars of the dome have struck the imagination and sensitivity of visitors over the centuries, so much so that it is said that Cole Porter, on his honeymoon in Ravenna, was so struck by the atmosphere of the small mausoleum and its stars that he composed the his very famous song Night and Day.
BATTISTERO NEONIANO - Costeggiando il Duomo si transita davanti al Battistero Neoniano, edificato probabilmente attorno agli inizi del V secolo. Al tempo del vescovo Neone fu oggetto di importanti lavori di restauro che portarono al rifacimento della cupola, ma soprattutto alla realizzazione della decorazione interna che oggi possiamo ammirare.
BASILICA DI SANT’APOLLINARE IN CLASSE - Al 21esimo km, il percorso della Maratona approda alla Basilica di Sant’Apollinare in Classe, definita il più grande esempio di basilica paleocristiana. Nonostante le spoliazioni subite nel corso dei secoli, la chiesa preserva la bellezza della struttura originaria ed è ammirata per gli splendidi mosaici policromi del suo catino absidale e gli antichi sarcofagi marmorei degli arcivescovi lungo le navate.
BASILICA DI SANT’APOLLINARE NUOVO – Manca poco all’arrivo, ma le meraviglie non sono finite, perché a pochi metri dal traguardo l’ultimo sito UNESCO che il percorso tocca è la Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo. Fatta erigere da Teodorico accanto al suo palazzo, fu in origine adibita a Chiesa palatina, di culto ariano. Secondo la tradizione, nel IX secolo le reliquie di Sant’Apollinare furono traslate qui dalla Basilica di Classe e in quell’occasione ricevette la sua intitolazione a Sant’Apollinare, detta «Nuovo» per distinguerla da un’altra chiesa dallo stesso nome. Al suo interno la meravigliosa decorazione di mosaico parietale bizantino.
ALTRI PUNTI DI INTERESSE SUL PERCORSO E IN CITTÀ - Nel weekend della Maratona di Ravenna potrai accedere ad alcuni musei a prezzi scontatissimi. BASILICA OF SAN VITALE - A few meters and here is the Basilica of San Vitale, one of the most important monuments of early Christian art in Italy. Founded on the orders of Bishop Ecclesius, the octagonal basilica was consecrated in 548 by Archbishop Maximian. Inside, magnificent mosaic decorations in the apse, and baroque frescoes in the dome.
CHAPEL OF S. ANDREA - Continuing you arrive in front of the Duomo, a relatively recent cathedral built between 1734 and 1745, seat of the archdiocese of Ravenna and Cervia. The Chapel of St. Andrew is located in the nearby Archbishop’s Palace, the only example of an early Christian archbishop’s chapel that has survived intact, built by Peter II and originally dedicated to Christ and later dedicated to Saint Andrew, whose relics had been transported from Constantinople to Ravenna in the 6th century.
NEONIAN BAPTISTRY - Walking alongside the Cathedral you pass in front of the Neonian Baptistery, probably built around the beginning of the 5th century. At the time of Bishop Neone it was the subject of important restoration works which led to the reconstruction of the dome, but above all to the creation of the internal decoration that we can admire today.
BASILICA OF SANT’APOLLINARE IN CLASSE - At the 21st km, the Marathon route arrives at the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, defined as the greatest example of an early Christian Basilica. Despite the plundering suffered over the centuries, the church preserves the beauty of the original structure and is admired for the splendid polychrome mosaics of its apse basin and the ancient marble sarcophagi of the archbishops along the naves.
BASILICA OF SANT’APOLLINARE NUOVO - It’s almost time to arrive, but the wonders aren’t over, because a few meters from the finish line the last UNESCO site that the route touches is the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo. Built by Theodoric next to his palace, it was originally used as a Palatine Church of Arian worship. According to tradition, in the 9th century the relics of Sant’Apollinare were moved here from the Basilica of Classe and on that occasion it received its dedication to Sant’Apollinare, called “New” to distinguish it from another church of the same name. The Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra will be free if you show up with the event bib while entry for companions will be reduced to 4 euros. NON SOLO UN BUON MOTIVO, PER VISITARE RAVENNA
Ravenna è senza dubbio una delle città più significative della storia d’Italia, a cominciare dalla presenza della tomba del sommo poeta, Dante Alighieri, che viene omaggiato in ogni angolo della città. Ogni giorno, alle ore 18 in punto, davanti al suo sepolcro, viene recitato un canto diverso della Divina Commedia (“l’ora che volge il disìo”) e, al termine della lettura, la campana suona 13 rintocchi, in ricordo della notte tra il 13 e il 14 settembre 1321, data della sua morte.
Ma perché Ravenna ha un ruolo così centrale nella storia italiana? Perché è stata capitale ben tre volte: prima dell’Impero Romano d’Occidente, poi del Regno Ostrogoto e infine dell’Esarcato bizantino. Insomma, ogni volta che un nuovo potere prendeva piede nella penisola, Ravenna ne diventava il cuore politico e simbolico. Il motivo? La sua posizione strategica: da un lato il mare, dall’altro le paludi, la rendevano praticamente inespugnabile. Nella zona dove oggi sorge la frazione di Classe, accanto all’imponente basilica di Sant'Apollinare patrimonio dell’UNESCO, un tempo si trovava una delle flotte militari più importanti d’Italia. Ravenna, infatti, era costruita sull’acqua e alcune tracce di questa sua natura si possono ancora notare.
Questo periodo di splendore ha lasciato in eredità otto straordinari Monumenti Paleocristiani, che tra l’altro si incontrano lungo il percorso della Maratona di Ravenna. E dentro questi capolavori si conservano i celebri mosaici bizantini, risalenti al V e VI secolo, altro simbolo della città.
Insomma, Ravenna è una città che non potete non visitare: poi non dite che non vi avevamo avvisati!
COSA VEDERE A RAVENNA IN UN WEEKEND
1 BASILICA DI SAN VITALE› Un maestoso scrigno del VI secolo, capolavoro dell’arte paleocristiana e bizantina dove ammirare bellissimi mosaici (notevoli i mosaici dell’abside, soprattutto). È consigliato visitare la basilica con la luce del sole, perché i colori sono più lucenti e di impatto.
2 MAUSOLEO DI GALLA PLACIDIA› Un’altra meraviglia, Patrimonio Unesco e tra i capolavori da vedere a Ravenna. Il Mausoleo fu fatto costruire dall’imperatrice Galla Placidia nel V secolo perché servisse per la sua sepoltura. Il soffitto stellato è di una bellezza ipnotica: non riuscirete a smettere di guardare in alto!
3 MAR - MUSEO D’ARTE DELLA CITTÀ DI RAVENNA› Il Museo accoglie quadri e mosaici contemporanei. Dal 18 ottobre 2025 al 18 gennaio 2026, il museo ospita la mostra “Chagall in mosaico. Dal progetto all’opera”, la prima interamente dedicata al legame tra il grande artista e la tecnica musiva – un capitolo sorprendente e ancora poco noto del suo percorso creativo. L’esposizione ha inaugurato la IX Biennale di Mosaico Contemporaneo di Ravenna: tre mesi di eventi, mostre e installazioni diffusi in tutta la città.
4 BASILICA DI SANT’APOLLINARE IN CLASSE› Questa basilica si trova a soli pochi chilometri da Ravenna ed è un esempio di architettura cristiana del VI secolo. Fu costruita per celebrare e conservare le spoglie del patrono della città e anche qui potrete ammirare dei meravigliosi mosaici, che ne hanno fatto uno dei Patrimoni Unesco dell’Umanità.
5 BASILICA DI SANT’APOLLINARE NUOVO› Da non confondere con la Basilica di Sant’Apollinare in Classe, fu voluta da Teodorico nel VI secolo e qui vennero poi spostate le reliquie del patrono di Ravenna. È un’opera importante perché è l’unica testimonianza totalmente intatta del culto ariano dei Goti, nel quale la figura di Cristo è sia divina che terrena.
6 TOMBA DI DANTE› La storia della morte e della sepoltura di Dante a Ravenna è abbastanza controversa. Le sue spoglie furono infatti nascoste dai frati francescani, poi ritrovate e spostate per avere definitivamente pace in quella che è chiamata “la tomba di Dante”, voluta dal cardinale Luigi Valenti Gonzaga sulla fine del 1700.
7 MAUSOLEO DI TEODORICO› Il mausoleo fu voluto da Teodorico per la sua propria sepoltura ed è costruito sul modello dei battisteri paleocristiani. Qui la bellezza è nell'essenzialità dell' architettura e la cupola è uno spettacolo notevole.
NOT JUST A GOOD REASON TO VISIT RAVENNA
Ravenna is undoubtedly one of the most significant cities in Italian history, starting with the presence of the tomb of the “sommo poeta”, the great Dante Alighieri, who is paid homage to in every corner of the city. Evry day, at 18 hour sharp, in front of his tomb, a different Canto of the Divina Commedia(“l’ora che volge al disìo”) is recited and, at the end of the reading, the bell rings 13 times, in memory of the night between the 13 and 14 of September 1321, the date of his death.
But why does Ravenna have such a central role in Italian history? It’s because it has been capital three times: the first time for the Western Roman Empire, then for the Ostrogothic Reign and lastly for the Byzantian Exarchate. Therefore, every time a new power took over in the peninsula, Ravenna became its political and symbolic power. The reason? Its strategic position: on one side the sea, on the other the swamps, this feature made the city almost impregnable. In the area in which today the fraction of Classe resides, next to the imposing basilica of Sant’Apollinare under the UNESCO heritage, once resided one of the most important military fleets of Italy. Ravenna was indeed built upon water and some traces of this nature of its are still noticeable.
This shining period has left a heritage of eight extraordinary early Christian Monuments, which by the way you can meet along the route of the Ravenna Marathon. Inside these masterpieces, the famous Byzantine mosaics are preserved, dating to the V and VI century, another symbol of the city.
In conclusion, Ravenna is the city you cannot avoid visiting: don’t say we didn’t warn you!
WHAT TO SEE IN RAVENNA IN A WEEKEND
1 BASILICA OF SAN VITALE› A majestic 6th century casket, a masterpiece of early Christian and Byzantine art where you can admire beautiful mosaics (especially the mosaics in the apse). It is recommended to visit the basilica in the sunlight, because the colors are brighter and more impactful.
2 MAUSOLEUM OF GALLA PLACIDIA› Another wonder, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the masterpieces to see in Ravenna. The Mausoleum was built by the Empress Galla Placidia in the 5th century to serve for her burial. The starry ceiling is hypnotic beauty: you won’t be able to stop looking up!
3 MAR - ART MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF RAVENNA›
The Museum houses contemporary paintings and mosaics. From the 18 of October 2025 to the 18 of January 2026, the museum will host the exhibition “Chagall in Mosaic. From design to work”, the first one completely dedicated to the relationship between the great artist and the technique of mosaics – a surprising and still little known chapter of his creative path. The exhibition inaugurated the IX Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic of Ravenna: three months full of events, exhibitions and installations all around the city.
4 BASILICA OF SANT’APOLLINARE IN CLASSE› This basilica is located just a few kilometers from Ravenna and is an example of Christian architecture of the sixth century. It was built to celebrate and preserve the remains of the patron saint of the city and here too you can admire the wonderful mosaics, which have made it one of the Unesco World Heritage Sites.
5 BASILICA OF SANT’APOLLINARE NUOVO› Not to be confused with the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, it was commissioned by Theodoric in the sixth century and the relics of the patron saint of Ravenna were then moved here. It is an important work because it is the only totally intact testimony of the Aryan cult of the Goths, in which the figure of Christ is both divine and earthly.
6 DANTE S TOMB› The story of Dante’s death and burial in Ravenna is quite controversial. His remains were in fact hidden by the Franciscan friars, then found and moved to finally have peace in what is called “Dante’s tomb”, commissioned by Cardinal Luigi Valenti Gonzaga in the late 1700s.
7 MAUSOLEUM OF THEODORIC› The mausoleum was commissioned by Theodoric for his own burial and is built on the model of the early Christian baptisteries. Here the beauty lies in the essentiality of the architecture and the dome is a remarkable sight.
MOSTRE EXHIBITIONS
“Chagall in mosaico. Dal progetto all’opera” in mostra al MAR Fino al 18 gennaio 2026, il MAR – Museo d’Arte della città di Ravenna, diretto da Roberto Cantagalli, presenta “Chagall in mosaico. Dal progetto all’opera”, la prima mostra interamente dedicata al legame tra il grande artista e la tecnica musiva, un capitolo sorprendente del suo percorso creativo. Curatori: Anne Dopferr, Grégory Couderc, Giorgia Salerno e Daniele Torcellini. L’esposizione, che ha inaugurato la IX Biennale di Mosaico Contemporaneo, racconta il rapporto di Marc Chagall con il mosaico e la città di Ravenna, nato nel 1954, quando l’artista visita la città e rimane profondamente colpito dalla bellezza e dalla spiritualità dei mosaici bizantini. Un anno dopo, su iniziativa di Giuseppe Bovini e tramite Lionello Venturi, Chagall viene invitato a partecipare alla Mostra di Mosaici Moderni.
“Luogo condiviso”, IX Biennale di Mosaico Contemporaneo
Fino al 18 gennaio 2026 a Ravenna va in scena la IX Biennale di Mosaico Contemporaneo, promossa, organizzata e sostenuta dal Comune e coordinata dal MAR, con la direzione artistica di Daniele Torcellini. Oltre alla mostra su Chagall, eventi ed esposizioni con protagoniosta il mosaico in diverse zone della città, che diventa “Luogo condiviso”, come suggerisce il titolo. Dagli Antichi Chiostri Francescani alla Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra, da Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste a Porta Adriana, dove è installato uno speciale pavimento (foto) realizzato da Nicola Montalbini.
Alle origini della Biblioteca Classense
Importante mostra realizzata per celebrare la riapertura dell’Aula Magna della Biblioteca Classense. Fino al 17 gennaio l’esposizione “La Libreria dei Camaldolesi a Ravenna. Dalla Biblioteca monastica alla Classense” illustra la storia della biblioteca dell’abbazia di Classe dal trasferimento in città dopo la Battaglia del 1512 fino alla soppressione napoleonica del 1798 e conseguente municipalizzazione. In mostra alcuni dei più prestigiosi volumi manoscritti e a stampa della collezione voluta dall’abate Pietro Canneti, come il noto “Aristofane ravennate” e la “Naturalis historia di Plinio”.

In occasione della IX Biennale di Mosaico Contemporaneo, fino al 18 gennaio 2026, sono state allestite esposizioni a cura del Servizio Turismo, in collaborazione con il MAR. Mostra all’Open–air Gallery, in via Zirardini (foto), una galleria d’arte a cielo aperto, dove opere e installazioni dialogano con l’ambiente cittadino, offrendo un omaggio visivo e simbolico alla Biennale. Nello spazio del Mosaic Temporary Shop (MTS), all’interno dello IAT di piazza San Francesco, “Omaggio alla Notte d’Oro” del Collettivo Racconti Ravennati: un progetto che unisce creatività, artigianato e promozione.

“Chagall in Mosaic. From Design to Work” an exhibition at MAR
Until the 18th of January 2026, the MAR – Art Museum of the city of Ravenna presents “Chagall in Mosaic. From Design to Work”, the first exhibition entirely dedicated to the relationship between the great artist and the technique of mosaic, a surprising chapter in his creative journey. Curators: Anne Dopferr, Grégory Couderc, Giorgia Salerno, and Daniele Torcellini. The exhibition, which inaugurated the 9th Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic, explores Marc Chagall’s relationship with mosaics and the city of Ravenna. This relationship began in 1954, when the artist visited the city and was deeply moved by the beauty and spirituality of Byzantine mosaics. A year later, at the initiative of Giuseppe Bovini and through Lionello Venturi, Chagall was invited to participate in the Modern Mosaics Exhibition.
“Luogo condiviso” (Shared place), IX Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic
Until the 18th of January 2026, Ravenna stages the IX Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic, promoted, organized and supported by the Municipality and coordinated by MAR, under the artistic direction of Daniele Torcellini. Besides the Chagall Exhibition, events and exhibitions centering around mosaic take place in different city zones, which become “Luogo condiviso”, shared place, as the title suggests. From Ancient Franciscan Cloisters to the Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra, from Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste to the Porta Adriana , where lies the installation of a special pavement (photo) made by Nicola Montalbini.
To the origins of the Classense Library
A very important exhibition was made to celebrate the reopening of the Aula Magna in the Classense Library. Until the 17th of January, the exhibition “The Library of Camaldolesi in Ravenna. From the monastic library to Classense” narrates the story of the library of the abbey in Classe from the transfer to the town after the battle of 1512 to the Napoleonic suppression of 1798 and the consequent municipalization. On display are some of the most prestigious handwritten and printed volumes of the collection commissioned by the abbot Pietro Canneti, such as the well-known “Aristofane ravennate” and the “Naturalis historia of Plinio”.
Tributes to the Biennial
On occasion of the IX Biennia of Contemporary Mosaic, until the 18th of January 2026, various exhibitions have been set up edited by the Tourism Service, collaborating with MAR. An Open-air Gallery Exhibition, in via Zirardini (photo), is an open-air art gallery, where art works and installations can dialogue with the urban environment, offering a visual and symbolic tribute to the Biennial. In the Mosaic Temporary Shop (MTS) space, inside the IAT in San Francesco square, “Tribute to the Golden Night” form the Ravenna’s Tales Collective: a progect that combines creativity, craftsmanship and sponsorship.

Those registered for the Ravenna Marathon 42K, Consar Half Marathon 21K, and Martini Good Morning Ravenna 10K will receive (inside the race pack distributed at the Expo Marathon Village) a discount coupon for Mirabilandia park entrance tickets and for park + hotel packages to be used in the 2026 season.
Saranno 46 i pacer che accompagneranno l’avventura degli atleti sulle strade di Ravenna, dal tempo di 3:00 a quello di 6:00 ore. E su un totale di 46 pacer, ben 14 saranno donne: un segnale forte di rappresentanza e di equilibrio, che conferma la volontà di Ravenna Runners Club di promuovere uno sport aperto e partecipativo a ogni livello.
A Ravenna correranno anche i rianimatori in corsa, runner che forniscono la rianimazione lungo le strade delle gare italiane. Partiranno in coda alla manifestazione e vigileranno sulla salute dei partecipanti. Un’ulteriore attenzione allo svolgimento più sereno possibile della manifestazione.
THE PACERS
AND RESCUERS ON THE RUN
There will be 46 pacers accompanying the athletes on their adventures through the streets of Ravenna, with times ranging from 3:00 to 6:00 hours. And out of a total of 46 pacers, 14 will be women: a strong sign of representation and balance, confirming the Ravenna Runners Club’s commitment to promoting an open and participatory sport at all levels. Racing rescuers, runners who provide resuscitation along the streets of Italian races, will also be running in Ravenna. They will start at the rear of the event and will monitor the health of participants. This is another measure to ensure the event runs as smoothly as possible.
