LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Separation is a new, different and confronting experience. Even if you really wanted the separation, you may encounter strong feelings you did not expect.
It’s essential to look after yourself. Firstly, no one else will and you are the one optimally qualified to know what you need! Secondly, when you look after yourself well, you’ll be better equipped to support your children and navigate any challenges that arise during this adjustment period. Most people need to see a counsellor or psychologist at least once to learn new coping strategies, emotional resilience and maintain good mental health. Your doctor may be able to prescribe a “mental health plan” to make seeing a psychologist more affordable. Maintaining healthy habits will positively support your mental wellbeing. Make sure you eat well, don’t drink too much, enjoy regular exercise and get enough sleep. Your family and close friends will probably be supportive in the initial stages of the separation. However ultimately, you need to look after yourself.
