With over 4 billion (4 miljard) fans worldwide, this sport remains the number one globally. It is played in every corner of the planet, from urban streets to grand stadiums, with mega tournaments (toernooien) like the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League pulling record-breaking views.

Football vs. soccer: in most countries, the word football means the game played with a round ball, which you try to kick into a goal. In the United States and Canada, football usually means another sport played with an oval ball and your hands. There, they use the word soccer for the game you play with your feet.

2

This sport has about 2.5 billion passionate followers, especially in India, Pakistan, England and Australia. With the Indian Premier League (IPL), World Cups and fast-growing formats like T20s, it has become a global spectacle.

3

With a massive reach in the USA, China and now expanding (uitbreiden) across Europe and Africa, this sport has around 2.4 billion fans. Many of its athletes are global icons. Today, it is becoming more and more popular with younger generations, thanks to its presence on social media and in street culture.

4

On the field, this sport is huge in Europe and Asia, while in Canada, the USA and Scandinavia it is mostly played on ice. Combined, this sport has around 2 billion fans, with passionate followings and historic rivalries (concurrentie) making it even more popular.

This sport is played professionally by men and women equally and is followed across all continents (werelddelen). With Grand Slam legends like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams shaping (vormgeven) its past – and new talent leading the future –it has a loyal global fan base of over 1 billion.

This sport is especially massive in Asia, mainly in China, but it also has global reach. Its fast-paced (snelle) nature has earned it around 850 million fans and that number is still rising.

Popular in the USA, Japan, South Korea and Latin America, this sport has a fan base of nearly 500 million. It continues to thrive (bloeien) through leagues like the MLB and other international competitions.

This sport, rich in tradition, has a global following of about 450 million. It is mainly popular in North America, the UK, Australia and Japan. Major tournaments like The Masters and The Open continue to attract (aantrekken) many viewers.

Fourth Years Triumph at Annual Athletics Competition

Last Friday, the St Andrew’s Secondary School held its annual athletics competition. The annual school athletics competition of the St Andrew’s School last Friday was nothing short of thrilling. Under a bright autumn sun, third- to sixth-year students gave it their all on the track and field. Excitement filled the air as the events unfolded one after another, and every second, every jump, every throw counted. At this stage in the game, class scores were incredibly close.

In the 100-metre sprint, Emma from 4A managed to get a head start off the blocks, reacting faster than others. But Sarah from 5B quickly became the front runner, powering ahead with strong strides. For most of the race, the two athletes were neck and neck. As they reached the final stretch, Emma decided to give it her best shot. With one last burst of speed, she blew the competition away, crossing the finish line just half a second ahead. The crowd burst into cheers!

Meanwhile, in the long jump, Lucas from 4B faced a tough moment. After two failed attempts, he looked ready to throw in the towel. But his coach encouraged him to keep his head in the game, and it paid off. On his final jump, he broke his personal record by four centimetres!

By the end of the day, the scoreboard made it official: the fourth year would win hands down Their consistent performances and team spirit brought them a well-deserved victory. As Coach Peeters said proudly after the event, “When the ball is in your court, it’s up to you to show what you’re made of, and today, our athletes did exactly that.”

1 Read the text and answer the questions.

Dear Diary,

What a day! I can finally breathe again… Yesterday, I finished my art project after stressing about it for weeks. A weight fell off my shoulders when I handed it in this morning.

I also had to do my English presentation today. I was shaking at first, but once I started talking, it went surprisingly well. Mr Jacobs even gave me a pat on the back and said I did a great job. That totally made my day!

During lunch, things got a bit awkward… I heard Mia talking behind Emma’s back, making fun of her new jacket. I really wanted to say something, but I decided to bite my tongue. It’s better not to get involved in drama that isn’t mine…

Later in the afternoon, Emma told me face to face that she already knew about it and that she didn’t care anymore. She said she’s tired of fake friends. Honestly, it was an eye-opener I never realised how strong she is!

When I got home, Mum asked me to keep an eye on my brother while she cooked dinner. She clearly had her hands full with a work call and a pot of pasta that almost boiled over.

After dinner, I told Dad about my awful maths test. I just needed to get it off my chest and it helped so much! He told me one bad grade isn’t the end of the world.

Now I’m lying on my bed with my head in the clouds, daydreaming about the weekend… Maybe it’s time to sleep.

xoxo, Charlotte
