When I started publishing this magazine, back in 2014, it was originally called "Campbellton Now" and was a social justice and community engagement piece for Campbell River's historic footprint. My 2nd issue featured Curtis Wilson's Indigenous version of the Canadian Flag. It was the first time it has ever been published and Curt was pretty excited, as was I. It was and is a new wave thought process on who we are as Canadians. Not saying that everyone has to agree; points of view are HOT right now and I'm not trying to light any fires. I would like to honour our country in this issue – the Big Pink (on the old maps), the Great White North (Coo-oucooucoou), predominantly known as Canada. Can we rise up from the noise we are all hearing and share stories and a love that relates to a special event, place, moment or memory that you have that lands on love, devotion and vigorous support, paralleled to the definition of patriotism. PUBLISHER'S NOTE | Issue 58 | Sonder Sonder is defined as that moment when you realize that everyone around you has an internal life as rich and as conflicted as yours – Seth Godin Society has changed through the course of time. When communities were smaller, made up of neighbours and family members, they generally greeted each other and welcomed you into their shops and homes. People would look you right in the eye and have unbiased conversations. Today, this friendliness has morphed into a much quieter approach for most. While society has changed and perhaps we are more in tuned with adversities from others, do you welcome people as you walk by them? Or is it head down and keep walking? Me – I’m a bit more optimistic and still believe that I should acknowledge people and say ‘Hi’. I will typically say hello to passers by and sometimes I receive a greeting in response, and sometimes I do not. I often think “are they having a bad day” or “that’s not very nice, not to respond”. CARING ~ Sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a person's life ~ Jackie Chan There are times where judgment just seems to land in our heads. It can be old programming, predisposition or simply a raw thought in reaction to something or someone. If we think in negative terms, our environment becomes negative and toxic. The good news is … you can turn that thought process around and make it positive and CARING! Struggling with old programming in our brains can be difficult but you can overcome this! Maybe you don't need this change and you already understand the importance of simply being kind and caring towards others; hopefully in a way that doesn't negatively impact their feelings. You know the old saying “make my day”; contrary to Clint Eastwood's meaning, why not make someone's day a bit brighter by creating / sending a positive comment or reinforcing kindness and caring to change your narrative and thinking and lift that person 'up'. ~ Do something today that your future self will thank you for. Our actions and decisions today will shape the way we will be living in the future. ~ How true!! Do you make time for yourself daily? It can be a tough task, in today's busy busy society mindset. What would it look like if you took 30 minutes or 1 hour – just for you? These are some of the personal decisions we make along our life journey. Maybe it's just completing that one chore at the end of day so your morning goes a little smoother; or maybe it's something for your family or work that needs your attention. It is a balancing act everyday to be able to get through your day, week, month and year … as we navigate our own journey. Life is not an easy journey for most; there are numerous challenges and fall downs and yet we manage to figure out a way to move forward. One little piece of advice to follow is to remember that everyday is a gift and to have gratitude for all the good pieces that arrive to you. This mindset can change the emotions of
