The media industry was hit with a major blow earlier this year when Metroland Media, an Ontario-based media conglomerate, sought bankruptcy protection, stopped printing 70 community newspapers, and shut down its flyer business.
Canada’s flyer industry was already shrinking. According to Joanne McNeish, an associate professor at Toronto Metropolitan University specializing in marketing, and as quoted in a Canadian Press article, 13 billion pieces are distributed annually. A decade ago, it used to be 17 billion.
A Canada Post study found 42 per cent of millennial Canadians store the direct mail they receive for future reference.
The decline can be attributed to the growth of coupon and cost savings apps, retail store apps and websites along with more digital advertising, said the report.
The same report also highlighted fears that Metroland’s exit will push more companies into digital advertising at the expense of print marketing.
“I think some will probably just stop using papers completely,” said Claire Tsai, a marketing professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, in an interview to the Canadian Press. “Some may still try but overall, at the aggregate level, you will see less use of papers. When a business exits the industry, there’s less competition and so there could be implications on cost and it becomes much more costly to use papers to reach their customers.”
While the news is grim, we must remember the benefits of printed marketing materials. In her article on sensory marketing (pg 20), Montserrat Petit, managing director of the Barcelona-based marketing agency MOND Marketing On Demand, highlights the need for effective marketing, which inevitably, has a printed component.
She writes, “Brands must use a combination of printed, physical, and offline marketing to reach all five senses: smell, vision, taste, hearing, and touch. Due to the vast amounts of information we receive every day, our brains can only retain what makes a strong impression on us by creating a memorable experience. Of course, emotions play a very import-
ant role in making an experience memorable. The more senses are involved in that experience or event, the more impactful it will be.”
Olivia Parker reinforces the importance of printed advertising in her article on direct mail (pg 12).
She highlights a Canada Post study that found one in four Canadians read and open every piece of direct mail and 50 per cent of millennial Canadians are excited to see what’s in their physical mailbox with 42 per cent keeping mail for future reference.
“Mail continues to be one of the most viable ways to reach consumers since it is tactile and stands out when compared to the hundreds of emails clogging our inboxes daily,” she adds.
Parker goes on to exhort printers to leverage their expertise in all things print (think paper weights, types and brightness, envelope sizes and colours, inks, and finishing techniques) to offer consumers the best possible marketing material that will entice a profitable return on investment.
“All this knowledge can be put to good use in creating mail that stands out. Whether it is producing a short run of PR packages or large mailings for non-profits we can create quality, eye-catching print materials at a variety of price ranges that get attention in the mailbox,” she writes. “To get a consumer to act requires excellent storytelling and copywriting, along with meaningful design choices.”
The winds of change have been blowing hard for a long time, and we don’t know how it’ll end. However, we can all agree that the only way forward is to accept evolution is constant. Success requires flexibility, agility, the humility to accept change and adapt accordingly.

Just over 500 years ago, in 1450, Johannes Gutenberg first fashioned lead movable type to print the Bible in the German city of Mainz. However, to discover the real genesis of printing, we must go back to 868 AD China when the Diamond Sutra, a Buddhist book, was printed. This was followed 220 years later by the first individual clay type created by Bi Sheng in 1088 AD. Oddly, we don’t know who built the first printing press, so we must assume all sorts of gadgets were borrowed or modified from other disciplines to fashion the early attempts at volume printing.
Since the time of Sheng and Gutenberg, our industry has grown and prospered with ever-increasing demands for the dissemination of information. Speeds increased, and materials like paper improved, as printed materials became cheaper with new technologies. The desperate hunger for knowledge created a profitable market for printing until a better way cast the last 500 years aside in a flash.

pharma of an expensive packaging cost. It’s possible inserts and outserts will be gone from OTC medications soon.
The consumer will judge our future sustainability in placing ink on paper, plastics, or whatever media they demand.
The year 1995 was symbolized by the great transition to the internet. Drupa 1995, the lynchpin of all things prints, failed to grasp the changes soon to decimate a large segment of our world. At this exhibition, large web newspaper presses were erected, and a host of new offset machines dominated those of the upcom-
Print is no longer a critical information media source. Instead of being four wheels and a spare, we are now just a spoke on a larger wheel. Printing presses aren’t lifetime investments, but rather short-term solutions producing products of today and, with luck, maybe tomorrow. Take, for instance, printing for the pharmaceutical industry. OTC (over-the-counter) medicines come with inserts and outserts, which are six-point type, virtually impossible-to-read, folded sheets of warnings and instructions. Out of legal necessity, these mini-signatures have been included in everything from cough syrup to pain relievers. But now, a movement is afoot to eliminate them in favour of the ubiquitous QR codes. Smartphones are everywhere— almost everyone has one—and getting the same information with a phone click relieves big

Changes are happening with other forms of packaging too, such as CPG goods packaging. With the rapid rise of in-mouldlabelling, a potentially lucrative new enhancement could be wide open to attack from those who wage war on plastic in packaging.
No one segment of the print industry is safe from the future demands of the consumer. We must be aware that everything we do today is ripe for obsolescence tomorrow.
Drupa 2024 will soon be upon us. The event is still important, perhaps not for the new devices on display, but for what ‘may’ be relevant over the next few years.
The expo will showcase legacy offset and even more toner and inkjet, but we can no longer view a trade show as a sherpa to the mountaintop. Ultimately, the consumer will judge our future sustainability in placing ink on paper, plastics, or whatever media they demand.

any people try to work out issues and overcome challenges with little research and after talking to an associate or two. We don’t dedicate time to make good plans. Major issues facing our industry are left to others to address, and if everyone thinks the same, nothing is done. If we want our companies and the industry to continue to thrive and prosper, people need to work together to make things happen, and progress!
That’s the value of industry associations, peer groups and mentors. Mentoring arrangements can be formal or informal. Informal can include working with someone who has knowledge, skill, and experience that you recognize and value. The person may agree to establishing an organized arrangement, which could be meeting for coffee periodically, and discussing business issues and challenges. It’s important that the purpose of the relationship and objectives are discussed, otherwise it would appear that the mentee is just using the mentor for information and advice.
When I was with a major financial institution, there was a formal mentoring program. People would volunteer to be mentors, indicate their interests and skills, and provide some background information. Mentees would also do the same and would be matched with a prospective mentor. In addition to business discussions, other issues like challenges related to being a woman, or ethnic minority in the workplace, may be discussed. If this is a requirement, then matching someone who has faced similar challenges would be preferred.
Many people do not realize, but mentoring arrangements are useful at all stages of our careers. The needs and focus may change, but the pro-

cess is beneficial for many. Also, being a mentor to someone does not mean that you cannot also have a mentor of your own.
Students at the Toronto Metropolitan University can participate in the Print Wisdom mentorship program. This is a formal program available for second- to fourth-year students. Students register and provide a profile with their areas of interest, goals and indicate if a specific demographic profile for a mentor is preferred.
Each student is matched with a mentor and specific goals, objectives, and meeting frequency is established.
Natalia Lumby, chair, Graphic Communications Management program said, “Mentors provide a new perspective into future careers and are another friendly face in this important transition time for students.”
Helping someone who is investing four years of their life to prepare for the graphic communications industry bridge the gap from an academic environment to how the technology and processes are managed in the business environment is an important task.
There can be discussion on companies in the different segments of the industry, application and chal-
lenges with technology, materials, people, approaches, and outcomes. Getting ready for a career will also involve making decisions on industry segments, roles, and responsibilities and how to navigate a career path. Throughout this process it is important to respect confidentiality. Mentors are not to share confidential company information, and mentees must be aware they may be gaining insights that should not be shared.
After talking to many mentors for the GCM program, Lumby also commented, “Mentors are also often surprised by how energizing and fulfilling giving back can be.”
If you are interested in becoming a mentor for a student or another industry person, please contact me. Remember, many of the students are young women and would really enjoy connecting with women who have been in the industry for a few years and would be willing to spend some time and share insights.
To summarize, as Michelle Obama said, “Mentorship is not just about sharing advice, but also about sharing experiences and lessons learned.”

The Canada-Ontario Job Grant (COJG) has been around since 2016 and provides $192 million annually in funding to increase the skill level of new or existing employees. COJG’s goal is to increase the skill level of Canada’s workforce and help Canadian companies become more globally competitive. Funding is very generous covering up to 84 per cent of the costs of training to a maximum of $10,000 per employee per year. While COJG does not cover routine or mandatory training such as Fall Arrest, Health and Safety Training or WHMIS, it does fund sales and customer training, management training, software training ( i.e. ERP) and specialized industry software and vendor training.
COJG covers:
• college or university courses;
• school board courses;
• union-based training courses;
• vendor product courses;
• fees by training providers; and
• mandatory student fees, textbooks, software and other required materials for all approved courses and examination fees.
The funding depends on the number of employees.
If your company has less than 100 T4 employees, COJG will cover 80 per cent of the training costs to a maximum of $10,000 per employee. For example, if a company spent $11,900 on training an employee, they would receive the maximum training grant amount of $10,000. Therefore, the

employer would only be incurring $1,900 in expenses.
If your company has more that 100 T4 employees, COJG covers 50 per cent of the training costs to a maximum of $10,000 per employee. For example, if a company spent $20,000 on training an employee, they would receive the maximum training grant amount of $10,000 per employee.
Proof of payment needs to be provided to the government to receive reimbursement for training costs. It takes at least six weeks to receive your training COJG funding.
The CanadaOntario Job Grant was established in 2016.
A grant is a limited amount of funding that must be approved before any expenditures are made. If you apply for COJG when training is in process, or after you complete the training, your company will be ineligible. You need to apply for COJG and get it approved before the training starts.
Once the COGJ funds are given out for the year, even if your company qualifies for the funding, you will not be able to get funding. For example, your company applies for funding for
HR courses at a local college, which will be taking place in four months. While your company meets all the COJG criteria, you will not receive any funding if all COJG funds were given out for the government’s current fiscal year. You will need to wait until the next year.
COJG opens at the start of the government fiscal year, which is April 1 st and ends March 31st of the following year. It is recommended you apply for all required training as soon as possible to ensure funding.
The COJG application can be found on the Ministry of Colleges, Universities and Training website.
Once the COJG application form is completed, you submit it online, and someone from the government will be in touch with you. The government representative will review the application and ask for any additional details they need. The approval decision on your COJG application will be made within a few weeks of your meeting with the government representative. Employers may apply for funding on an annual basis.

Here
are some strategies to safeguard printing companies from cyberattacks
By Grant Sadler, P.Eng
In today’s fast-paced business world, the printing industry faces several technological challenges, including the ever-present threat of cyberattacks. As more and more processes go digital, the importance of ensuring robust cybersecurity in the printing and imaging sectors cannot be overstated. In this article, we will explore the challenges and opportunities related to cybersecurity in the printing industry and discuss best practices that can be adopted to help keep businesses safe.
The printing industry faces several
unique cybersecurity challenges. Firstly, printers, as networked devices, can often be targets of cyberattacks, as they may have access to sensitive and valuable information. Secondly, the complexity involved in securing various components of a printing business, such as email systems, company websites, social media accounts, backend systems (billing), online banking, mobile devices, and remote access, can pose a challenge for businesses that may not have dedicated IT security teams.
Despite the challenges, businesses in the printing industry have the oppor-
tunity to address their cybersecurity needs proactively. By leveraging advanced security solutions and adopting best practices, organizations can minimize the risk of cyberattacks and, consequently, protect their reputation and valuable information. Further, by demonstrating a high level of cybersecurity maturity, printing companies can attract new customers who value data privacy and security.
A common cybersecurity threat that many businesses face is phishing, which involves cybercriminals attempting to gain access to sensitive information by posing as a trustworthy entity. For example, an attacker may send an email to an employee of a printing company, pretending to be a client, with a suspicious attachment or a link to a website that installs malware on the user’s computer. If the recipient opens the attachment or clicks on the link, the attacker may gain unauthorized access to the company’s systems
and compromise crucial information, potentially leading to financial or reputational loss.
To counter phishing attacks, printing companies can train their employees on how to recognize potential phishing emails, encourage the use of strong, unique passwords for each account, and use multi-factor authentication methods to protect critical systems and information.
Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts a victim’s data and demands payment, usually in cryptocurrencies, to release the decryption key. In this example, a cybercriminal infiltrates the network of a printing and imaging services provider and deploys ransomware, effectively locking the company out of its critical files and systems. Until the ransom is paid, the company cannot access its data or fulfil customer orders, causing significant operational disruption and revenue loss.
To protect their businesses from
Make all passwords unique, complex, and more than 15 characters long.
ransomware attacks, printing companies should ensure all software on their systems is up-to-date and patched regularly, as outdated software can present vulnerabilities that cybercriminals exploit. Additionally, implementing robust data backup and recovery processes and educating employees on cybersecurity best practices can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to ransomware attacks.
To protect from ransomware and other cyberattacks, all employees and contractors should take ownership of their cyber hygiene and follow these best practices:
1. Always use strong authentication for credentials on all software and systems:
• Enable MFA (multi-factor authentication)
• Authenticator app is more secure than SMS
• Enable biometrics

• No passwords to lose or share
• Make all passwords unique and complex
• 15+ characters long
• When a password is compromised, only one account is affected
• Use a password manager
• Use Passkeys
• Severely reduces social engineering effectiveness
2. Never join an unknown network, like a free wi-fi network. This leaves your device open to any other device on the network.
• Most public networks are big “flat” networks, which are a hacker’s dream
• Hotspotting to a cell phone is better
• Bringing your own router/gateway is the best
3. Keep all software and applications up to date. Out-of-date software often contains vulnerabilities that hackers exploit to infiltrate networks and systems.
• Enable auto-update
• Restart your browser (most browsers auto-update, but they need to be restarted to take effect) For IT professionals and more advanced users, the following should
As
also be done:
4. Segment your network. Dividing a company’s network into smaller, isolated segments will minimize the risk of a cyberattack spreading to other systems because it restricts the attacker’s lateral movement. This can be achieved by the following methods:
• Separate router/gateway
• VLAN
5. Enable threat and phishing protection by using a DNS provider that has a better “phone book” that doesn’t include “phone numbers” (IPs) for bad actors. When users click on a “bad” link in an email, this will stop the attack in its tracks. Additionally, malware trying to “call home” to some rogue domain won’t be able to get there.
• Can be configured on your home router – best
• Can be configured on each endpoint device or even in each browser
• Free DNS providers
• OpenDNS
• CIRA Canadian Shield
6. Continuous traffic monitoring and inspection, while maintaining full

employee privacy
• Do not decrypt traffic – packet inspection can be done without decrypting packets
• Implement advanced network monitoring and threat detection tools
The printing industry faces unique cybersecurity challenges, but also has the opportunity to address these issues proactively. With all users taking ownership of their own cyber hygiene and adopting best practices, such as strong authentication, regular software updates, and making sure not to join unknown networks, the risk of cyberattacks is reduced drastically. Additionally, with corpor-

ate IT professionals adopting network segmentation, threat and phishing protection, and continuous monitoring and response, any potential threat will be contained and easier to eliminate.

Our priority must be to create mailers that will inspire receivers to act, not just cherish the beauty of the printed piece.

Attention
and action are two sides of direct mail.
A great piece of mail will get seen, noticed, and acted upon
By Olivia Parker
One of the quirks of my chosen career is that I have a reasonable obsession with all things paper, and I enjoy getting mail.
While I may look at a piece of mail with a more technical appreciation, I am not alone in my enjoyment. According to Canada Post, one in four Canadians read and open every piece of direct mail and 50 per cent of millennial Canadians (born between 1981 to 2000) are excited to see what’s in their physical mailbox with 42 per cent keeping mail for future reference.
Mail continues to be one of the
most viable ways to reach consumers since it is tactile and stands out when compared to the hundreds of emails clogging our inboxes daily. In fact, most consumers have banner blindness with 58 per cent of people ignoring most online ads, according to Two Sides UK. According to the 2023 The State of Direct Mail report by Lob and Comperemedia, nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) of marketers agree direct mail delivers the best ROI, response rate and conversion rates among all channel options. All that to say, mail is still an important marketing channel.
Which is why, if given the opportunity, our knowledge as print pur-

veyors, graphic designers, creatives, etc. means we can offer advice to clients and marketers.
First, mail as a medium introduces limitations: size, weight, material, and required postage (the conditions change between different postal systems). It is important to know and understand the different specifications. For example, the smartmail marketing solutions offered by Canada Post neighbourhood mail (one to many), postal code targeting (one to few), and personalized mail (one to one) all have their own guidelines. Knowing the creative limits helps us plan and design mail that will be deliverable.
Second, at our fingertips is a wealth of knowledge about paper weights, types and brightness, envelopes of every size and colour, inks that span a rainbow of opportunities, and a wealth of finishing techniques (diecut, foil, emboss/deboss, etc.).
All this knowledge can be put to

good use in creating mail that stands out. Whether it is producing a short run of PR packages or large mailings for non-profits we can create quality, eye-catching print materials at a variety of price ranges that get attention in the mailbox.
Getting eyes on the mail is only half the battle as, arguably, many companies want to see a return on investment. John Lepp, author of Creative Deviations and an expert fundraiser with over 20 years of experience, would argue action is the key differentiator of effective mail. To get a consumer to act requires excellent storytelling and copywriting, along with meaningful design choices.
In 2022, Good Works released, Changing Tides: The Evolution of Giving Behaviour in Canada, stating that “33 per cent of Canadians polled reported that they made a donation in response to a fundraising letter they

received in the mail in the past year.” The Time We Spend With Mail (2023) report by the Joint Industry Currency for Mail (JICMAIL) showed a strong connection between mail attention and commercial effectiveness. According to their research, spending more time with direct mail items can result in a x2 to x3 increase in effectiveness, leading to more purchases, footfall, discussions, and voucher redemptions.
Additionally, mail generates significant digital attention for brands’ owned channels. A mail item that prompts visits to advertiser websites keeps users engaged for five minutes per session on average.
Think back. If it comes in a #10 white envelope with a logo in the top left corner most can predict what’s inside—bill or appeal. While the contents might be printed on a beautiful gloss stock with colour pictures and a solid brand campaign, is that enough to get us to act? To my earlier point I have lots of mail samples, but I can count on one hand the number of times I have acted.
Lepp uses the term, ‘doormat dominance,’ to explain our need to dominate a prospect’s mailbox. When he’s at conferences, he will show the conventional #10 juxtaposed against a handwritten invitation envelope with stamps and invite readers to contemplate, “Which would you want to open?”
Our focus on cosmetics or esthetics in print means we may blind ourselves to the end user’s experience. The need to create something that stands out can be our own downfall. For example, coated stocks are harder to hold, read and write on. Grey text and small point size have legibility issues. The use of colour or expensive finishing techniques can have the opposite effect.
Charities struggle with threading the needle between compelling design and not appearing to be squandering funds. Their audience knows print is expensive and expects non-profits to use their gifts meaningfully; expensive appearing print may alienate donors.
Lepp makes the following sugges-

tions for achieving compelling personalized persuasion at a commercial level.
A white #10 is expected and boring. Try a 6x9 envelope or change the envelope’s colour. Taglines or pictures on the exterior, while attention getting, immediately indicate it’s marketing. Create curiosity by inverting normal mail expectations.
Handwriting, mistakes, stamps; things that are not ‘commercial’ break up the monotony of mail and get people’s attention. To create this appearance consider using the ‘stamp-like’ indicia and a legible handwriting typeface while pre-sorting your mail to follow Canada Post standards.
Consider how you can add ‘more’ human elements like organic lines or hand drawn arrows. Informal and fun tone, voice, and visuals make the content more approachable. Personal and impactful stories make it less clinical and can connect deeply with audiences.
Studies have shown direct mail marketing delivers the best ROI, response rate and conversion rates.
In our quest for segmentation the cost of the mail should relate to the values of the audience.
The average customer may be skeptical of flashy or over-the-top designs and materials. Consider what a piece of mail for Ferrari versus Honda Civic prospect looks like; these are varied groups with different expectations around marketing materials and messages.
Admittedly, Lepp is a fundraiser, but he emphasizes how much impact a thank you can have.
“I went through 500 pieces of mail that my mother-in-law got from charities last year…through all of those she got only one thank you card. Although it was all automated, she still indicated she would give again because of that card,” he said.
A culture of gratitude is appreciated, and it matters. Encouraging clients to also print some thank you cards they can personalize could make all the difference.
Simple may seem boring, but there is a need to strike a balance in both presentation and content, so it resonates. Pretty marketing is definitely one way to be persuasive, but Lepp offers another perspective— break the rules.
“The more personal a piece of mail feels (like something that I sent to you), the more likely it’s going to get opened, and looked at, and hopefully acted upon. It feels weird in our roles in the professional world to be imperfect and personal but that creates action…You’re still a human being trying to talk to other human beings about something they hopefully want. Just all these professional barriers get in the way of really good open communication,” he explained.
People are paying attention to their mail, so we have a responsibility to make sure it also inspires action.

Brands must use a combination of printed, physical, and offline marketing to effectively reach consumers
By Montserrat Petit
In today’s world, we are constantly bombarded with all kinds of information in all possible formats, shapes, colours, and sounds. Our brains receive thousands of messages every day and are constantly switching from one topic to another. At work, we are handling video conferencing, instant messaging, emails, phone calls and face-to-face meetings while also keeping an eye on our phone in case something urgent comes up and needs an immediate response. In a matter of years, generations have shifted from watching movies to YouTube videos, TikTok clips and Instagram adverts in their leisure time.
In this hectic environment of endless choices, brands aiming to last and be profitable must find ways to stand out from the crowd. Revolutionized by the internet, marketing has become a crucial element of any business plan, with companies dedicating significant resources to it.
However, not all types of marketing can fulfil a company’s objectives. Today, customers are more market-aware, more demanding and less brand-loyal, meaning companies must be very smart and design an effective marketing strategy that will truly reflect their values and products, differentiate from competitors and ultimately, and most importantly, drive sales.

Q-Line with BHS180 delivers rock solid performance. Discover the latest innovation in digital cutting automation, designed for industrial production of packaging and displays. Perfect precision at unprecedented speeds. Digital cutting at the next level.

By ‘effective marketing,’ we don’t mean that we must favour digital (or modern) marketing – quick to implement – and forget about offline (or traditional) marketing. Instead, effective marketing means defining a powerful strategy with original, creative, and thoughtful ideas that will make an impact on our target audience, supported by consistent, coherent, and clever messages as well as followed by a well-defined and timely action plan.
Now we know what’s needed to achieve effective marketing, let’s talk about implementing it. Great marketing ideas often die because companies fail to implement them properly. On the other hand, good marketing ideas can become an incredible success when they are flawlessly implemented.
For reasons that vary depending on the company’s type or products, nowadays many brands solely focus on digital marketing. They invest from modest budgets to millions of dollars in Google and YouTube ads, Instagram videos, TikTok clips, web banners, SEO and SEM, hiring influencers to promote their products, etc.To survive, these brands need a constant market presence online, continuously delivering new content and being ever more creative and compelling. If they don’t, it’s just a matter of time before these brands fade and die.
At first, digital marketing may seem fun, modern, and less costly than printed marketing. However, there’s a high risk involved in advertising your brand exclusively through digital marketing: due to the huge volume of content available on the Internet and the usually short attention span of online customers, your brand will be competing with millions of other brands and can be quickly forgotten and replaced by one more active, more pervasive, or trendier than yours.
We always tell our customers that online marketing is like a fireplace: the moment you start burning fewer logs than your competitors, your fire will eventually go out. Branding your product online is a constant battle to burn more and more logs!
So, even though online marketing
is a must and can bring significant benefits, we must not ignore the enormous influence of offline marketing in helping shape consumer behaviour and the amplified benefits of mixing both types of marketing.
While digital marketing reaches the sight and hearing of customers, brands must use a combination of printed, physical, and offline marketing to reach all five senses: smell, vision, taste, hearing and touch.
Due to the vast amounts of information we receive every day, our brains can only retain what makes a strong impression on us by creating a memorable experience. Of course, emotions play a very important role in making an experience memorable. The more senses are involved in that experience or event, the more impactful it will be.
Sensory marketing is a form of marketing that targets customers’ senses to create an emotional connection with a product or brand. It utilises a variety of sensory stimuli to influence consumer behaviour. By engaging multiple senses, sensory marketing can help brands create a lasting impression on consumers. Sensory marketing can also be used to influence consumer behaviour. For example, research has shown that certain scents can increase sales, while certain colours can influence consumer perceptions of a product’s quality.
Overall, sensory marketing has become an increasingly important tool for brands looking to create memorable customer experiences and drive sales. On many occasions, sensory marketing can only be achieved with the help of printed materials, such as a magazine advert that includes a sample of a hand lotion or a perfume, or a high-level financial services company that sends its prospect customers a copy of their new corporate brochure printed on a special substrate that reflects wealth and prestige.
On many occasions, sensory marketing can only be achieved with the help of printed materials.

By engaging multiple senses, sensory marketing can help brands create a lasting impression on consumers.
Printed materials such as brochures, catalogues and flyers are physical items that remain in potential customers’ hands, making them easier to revisit and recall, read at their leisure, and even share with others. For instance, when a company is exhibiting at a tradeshow, distributing printed product brochures or postcards (instead of a PDF or an email) inviting customers to join a company event can make the difference between a potential customer forgetting about the brand or remembering it long after the tradeshow has ended.
Printed marketing materials can be very cost-effective, as they can be produced digitally at an affordable cost and strategically placed in locations where the target audience is most likely to be. A typical example: a real estate company placing flyers about a new housing development in local cafes or grocery stores to reach their target audience.
Printed marketing can also help build brand recognition by using distinctive substrates, designs, fonts, and colour schemes that people associate with the company. This strategy can be highly effective in creating a loyal customer base more likely to remember the company, its products, and services in the future.
Finally, printed marketing can help a company establish credibility and trust in the eyes of potential customers. Companies that invest in quality printed marketing give the impression that they are serious about their business and are generally seen as more trustworthy than those relying solely on digital marketing. This, in turn, can lead to increased confidence from potential customers and greater brand recognition as well.
Brands must use a combination of printed, physical, and offline marketing to reach all five senses: smell, vision, taste, hearing and touch.
Montserrat Petit is the founder and managing director of marketing agency MOND Marketing On Demand. This article was originally published in Drupa Essentials of Print Series. 5
In conclusion, despite the rise of digital marketing, offline marketing remains an essential part of any effective marketing strategy as very often it involves ‘touching’ the customers’ five senses. Brands that decide to include printed material in their marketing mix to provide a tangible means of accessing information are a step ahead in establishing credibility and trust among their target audience.
Digital production technologies is enabling on-demand fulfillment and allowing companies to capitalize on cultural trends while meeting consumer needs.

The rise of a digital supply chain is transforming the apparel industry
By Don Whaley
If you keep pace with manufacturing and production, one common thread that arises repeatedly is how complex and slow-moving the legacy fashion and textile industry is. Offshoring, waste, and inefficiency are the rule, not the exception.
The industry is pegged among the worst polluters in the world. According to the World Economic Forum, fashion and textiles make up 10 per cent of the world’s carbon emissions. If that weren’t bad enough, more than 85 per cent of all textiles produced go into dumpsters each year.
The Harvard Business Review notes the industry is actually moving backwards, with reports indicating the call
for sustainable fashion hasn’t translated into action during the past two decades. The manufacturing of shorts and shoes creates more waste than ever before, with 75 per cent of items produced ultimately being burned or buried in landfills.
So, why is material change not happening? Clearly a lack of widespread legislation to incentivize or force change is a key gap. One sliver of light is the recently proposed New York Fabric Act mandating the industry shape up or suffer the consequences. If passed, the legislation will require fashion retail sellers and manufactur-

ers to fully disclose all environmental and social diligence policies.
A digital ID, a unique code existing as a twin both on the garment and in the cloud, allowing for universal traceability of products to slow down waste in the fashion industry is emerging in France.
Another good news is that the demand side of the market is likely to become a major driving force simply because mass customization, the velocity of changing consumer preferences, and the need to respond immediately will force more nearshore and onshore production.
With the world experiencing a digital transformation like never before, culture is leading the way in change across industries. The digital-native generation has come of age, and their revolutionary mindset is making its presence felt.
Custom-designed fabrics provider called Spoonflower—now a subsidiary of Shutterfly—once spoke of an “Etsy army” that had populated their design library with 1.8 million digital creations, each of them ready to print on demand, to be fashioned into any number of do-it-yourself products.
Customers demand immediacy, capturing the moment as it’s experienced. Unfortunately, the one industry that has yet to catch up is fashion and apparel. That’s due to an analog supply chain built for the old way of production. At a popular fashion and textile sourcing event in New York, William Brenninkmeyer, global sourcing manager and lead of innovation at C&A, noted, “Chasing trends is impossible with an analog supply chain, where the lead time is
six to eight months. But digital production technologies now enable on-demand fulfillment, so you can bring concepts to production to consumer in two days. It’s incredible.”
This new model is driven by digital production. Digital on-demand production are empowering producers to channel digital creator and consumer data encompassing buying behaviours, social media listening, and more into a fulfillment strategy – answers demand for a digital supply chain with greater agility and efficacy than the traditional 18-month forecast cycle. Further, it answers the sustainability imperative by aligning supply with demand, thus minimizing the waste that inevitably comes from forecast-based production. The approach also makes it possible to unleash customization and personalization for micro-communities and even the individual.
At the same conference, Aaron Day, CEO of Amaze Software, echoed these thoughts: “The analog supply chain was built to meet a certain need at a certain time, but that world has been disrupted by a cultural shift. When you account for all the associated costs, I think we’re nearing a tipping point where an on-demand t-shirt can be produced cheaper than one produced using a traditional printing press.”
For those entering the industry, adoption of digital processes might not be that difficult. Companies leading with digital production can fully embrace the power of ‘phygital’ technology, which bridges the gap between digitally created imagery and physical fulfillment of those concepts. While these exciting technologies are a natural partner for brands with
Digital production is helping legacy fashion houses adopt nearshoring and eliminate supply chain disruptions.
a considerable e-commerce footprint, the challenge is far greater for retailers whose sales model stays tethered to the fortunes of the physical, brickand-mortar store. Consider European-based retail powerhouse C&A. Founded more than 180 years ago, with more than 1,200 physical locations worldwide, C&A embodies every attribute of powerful retail production.Yet, it is still vulnerable in the age of a web-driven ‘retail apocalypse.’ Counterintuitively, such a business sees considerable upside in web technologies. According to Brenninkmeyer, C&A is investing in digitization to drive ‘rightshoring’ for tailoring fulfillment strategies based on the most effective means of serving different customers and brands. Directly addressing the needs of a creator economy, on-demand, digital production makes it possible to digitize key pieces of their supply chains to adopt nearshoring more rapidly.
Seventy-five per cent of shorts and shoes produced are ultimately burned or buried in landfills.
10% 75%
According to the World Economic Forum, fashion and textiles make up 10 per cent of the world’s carbon emissions.
The same shift is playing out industry wide. Look no further than legacy brands like Nike and Gucci that are going all-in on NFTs and artificial intelligence. These brands realize this culture shift is demanding change in the way creators engage and produce. For them, it may not be a matter of adopting digital supply chains, but rather adopting pieces that work best for them. Companies are evaluating all new options on the table to avoid wasting time on things that won’t work, and zeroing in on technology that moves the needle the most.
The growing ecosystem of available digital technologies provides brands – from the designer who came of age in a digital world and dreams of establishing their own fashion label to the legacy retailer established before the advent of streetlights – with the capabilities to join and profit from the creator economy; deliver brilliant, uncompromising, high-quality physical goods; and better align demand with supply, eliminating overproduction waste. They can make the products people want, getting it into their hands faster, and minimizing the risks associated with today’s globalized marketplace. Finally, fashion is moving at the speed of digital culture.

Once the printing process has been completed, various finishing techniques are utilized to improve the overall quality and functionality of the printed materials. These techniques are essential in enhancing the appearance, durability, and functionality of the final product. From applying protective coatings to adding unique textures and finishes, these finishing techniques play a crucial role in ensuring the printed materials meet the desired standards and specifications.
Here are some common finishing techniques in printing:
Laminating : Laminating involves applying a thin layer of plastic film (usually polyester or polypropylene) to the printed surface. This process provides protection against moisture, wear and tear, and UV rays. Lamination can be glossy or matte.
UV coating : UV coating is a glossy, liquid coating applied to printed materials and then cured with ultraviolet light. It adds a shiny and protective finish to the printed piece, making it more durable and visually appealing.
Advances in 3D printing technology are enabling the creation of textured and raised effects on printed materials.

Finishing techniques are crucial for enhancing the appearance, durability and functionality of the final printed product.
Embossing and debossing : Embossing involves raising certain areas of the printed material to create a three-dimensional effect, while debossing depresses areas. These techniques add texture and depth to the design and are often used for business cards, invitations, and packaging.
Foil stamping : Foil stamping uses a heated die to transfer metallic or coloured foil onto specific areas of the printed piece. It creates a shiny, reflective finish and can be used for adding a touch of elegance or highlighting key elements in the design.
Die-cutting : Die-cutting is a process of cutting printed materials into custom shapes or designs using a sharp, metal die. It is commonly used for creating unique business cards, labels, and packaging.
Perforation: Perforation involves creating small, evenly spaced holes in the printed material, allowing for easy tearing along a designated line. It is often used for coupons, tickets, or reply cards.
final product looks clean and professional.
Folding: Folding is the process of creasing printed materials to make them easier to handle, store, or mail. Common folding styles include bifold, tri-fold, gatefold, and accordion fold.
Collating and inserting Collating involves arranging printed sheets in a specific order while inserting includes placing additional materials (such as brochures or reply cards) into printed envelopes or packages.
Binding and finishing equipment : Various machines, such as paper cutters, folding machines, and saddle-stitching equipment, are used in the finishing process to automate and streamline production.
Printers can customize printed materials using finishing techniques to cater to client needs and preferences. Selecting the right options can enhance quality and impact.
Some of the upcoming trends in finishing are:
Finishing techniques are utilized to improve the overall quality of the printed piece.
Binding : Binding methods include saddle-stitching (stapling along the spine), perfect binding (gluing the spine), spiral binding, and wire-o binding. The choice of binding method depends on the type of printed material and its intended use, such as books, catalogues, or reports.
Trimming and cutting : After printing, materials may be trimmed or cut to achieve specific dimensions or shapes. This process ensures the
Digital print bars : If you’re looking for a way to enhance the performance of your analog print press, one effective strategy is to integrate digital inkjet printing technology through the use of a print bar. This innovative tool provides the capability for variable printing, which means you can create customized prints with dynamic content that changes from one print to the next.
Augmented reality (AR) integration : Printing companies are
exploring ways to integrate augmented reality into printed materials. This can include using AR apps to provide interactive content when a smartphone or tablet is pointed at the printed piece.
3D printing and texture effects : Advances in 3D printing technology are enabling the creation of textured and raised effects directly on printed materials, eliminating the need for separate embossing or debossing processes.
Metallic and holographic effects Metallic and holographic
finishing techniques add a touch of luxury and visual appeal to packaging, labels, and promotional materials. These effects can be achieved using foil stamping, specialty inks, or holographic laminates.
Variable data printing (VDP) for personalization : Finishing techniques are increasingly used in conjunction with VDP to create personalized and targeted marketing materials. This can involve unique embossed or foiled elements on each printed piece.
Smart packaging : Packaging that incorporates NFC (near field communication) or RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology for tracking, authentication, and consumer engagement is gaining ground. Finishing techniques can complement these smart packaging solutions.
Printed electronics: While still in the early stages, printed electronics involve integrating electronic components like LEDs, sensors, and conductive inks into printed materials, opening up new possibilities for interactive and functional printed products.
AR/VR packaging: Augmented reality and virtual reality experiences are being integrated into product packaging for interactive storytelling and immersive consumer engagement.
Inkjet spot varnishing : Inkjet technology is being used for spot varnishing, allowing for precise application of gloss or matte varnishes on specific areas of printed materials. Advanced die-cutting and creasing: Die-cutting and creasing processes are becoming more advanced and precise, enabling intricate and complex designs and shapes in finished products.

Earlier this summer, the Avant Imaging & Integrated Media (AIIM), a targeted direct marketing company in Aurora, Ont., appointed Bob Gallant as vice-president of sales and marketing. The 58-year-old has spent most of his professional life delivering mission-critical, technology-based print and digital solutions to regulated clients across North America, so we decided to catch up with him.
What is the state of the print industry today, in your opinion?
BG: Print continues to play an integral role in the overall communications market. In Canada, it remains a $10-billion industry. With technological advancements in print production, including vast improvements in digital workflows, the accelerated conversion from offset to digital, and higher efficiencies in the litho world, we see an increase in market capacity.
What attracted you to the industry?
BG: I started my career at IBM’s Printer Marketing & System Supplies division in Toronto around 25 years ago. This gave me an introduction and appreciation of both the digital print and litho industry. The curiosity wasn’t so much for the actual product we produced, but the value they delivered to customers. I’ve always been inspired by the technological advances in the industry and have been fortunate to help drive the digital migration at the companies I worked.
How can the industry attract more young people?
BG: We can attract more youngsters by focusing on the role data, AI and other technologies play in delivering print solutions as part of an integrated communications strategy. If viewed on

its own, the print industry will surely lose momentum with young people. However, if we focus on ways to deliver effective communications that drive behaviours, it will continue to be an attractive industry.
In such a competitive landscape, how can printers win more sales?
BG: Print companies can focus on:
• Quality and innovation: Deliver high-quality printing services that exceed customer expectations.
• Customer service excellence: Respond promptly to inquiries, address customer concerns, and ensure a positive experience.
• Customization and personalization: Tailoring your services to individual customer needs can create a stronger connection.
• Networking and partnerships: Be where your customers are. Build relationships with other businesses that might require print services.
• Environmental sustainability: Embrace eco-friendly practices and offer sustainable printing options.
• Educational content: Position yourself as an industry expert.
What are some of the biggest opportunities you see in the print industry?
BG: Some of the biggest opportunities for growth will be for companies embracing AI and data analytics, and for those that use evolving technologies to drive consolidation plans.
What do you think is the most exciting thing about print today?
Success is often the result of a combination of strategies tailored to a company’s specific strengths, market trends, and customer preferences. Continuously adapting and staying attuned to customers’ needs will position your print company for long-term growth.
• Quality: Embrace a quality management program and regularly assess and improve your processes.
• Competitive pricing: Conduct thorough market research to set competitive prices.
• Quick turnaround times: Efficient turnaround times are crucial.
• Portfolio and showcase: Maintain an impressive portfolio showcasing a diverse range of your best work.
• Marketing and branding: Invest in effective marketing strategies.
BG: The most exciting thing about print today is how it continues to evolve from a technological perspective. Everything we print today has some sort of digital workflow or technology solution behind it. The Soma S-Mount as a stand-alone mounter for mid- and wide-web packaging.
