RENTAL RUMBLES

Heaters, lasers and energy at CRA Ontario meeting

Expect a slow first quarter in 2010, with numbers heading back up in Q2, and the rental business back on track by 2011. That was one of the messages delivered at the most recent meeting of the Canadian Rental Association’s Ontario Chapter. The meeting took place at Rentquip Canada in Woodstock, Ont.

The meeting started at 6 p.m. with a tour of Rentquip Canada and a social hour, followed by a buffet dinner and dessert. Jim Freeman of Rentquip Canada got the meeting underway, and thanked Total Rentals for providing tables and chairs for the meeting.

After dinner, a number of presenters took the floor, including Tim Jedrzejek of Enerco, who spoke on the company’s philosophy when it comes to building portable heaters for the rental market. The company has elected to forgo some of the “bells-and-whistles” and instead concentrate on making the units heavier and sturdier.

Jedrzejek summed up the reason behind this philosophy: “All these guys want the heater to do is work.” He also noted that rental heaters tend to take a lot of abuse, so sturdier construction was indicated.

Murray Logan of the Canadian Energy Expo also took the floor to talk about sustainable energy sources, which he notes is a growth area for the agriculture business.

Various sustainable power proposals were discussed, including geothermal.

Fred Freeman, founder of Rentquip Canada, informed attendees that the front office of Rentquip Canada uses geothermal heating and cooling, and has done so for the last 15 years.

Donations, highway safety highlights of CRA Saskatchewan meeting

The Saskatchewan chapter of the Canadian Rental Association (CRA) has announced that it will be making donations to two worthy causes. The decision was made at the CRA Saskatchewan regional meeting held Nov. 17 at The CAT Rental Store in Saskatoon.

The first donation will be $250, to help defray expenses involved with the Canadian hospitality room at The Rental Show in Orlando, Fla. The Canadian hospitality room will be open from 8 p.m. to midnight on Feb. 8, 2010, at the Doubletree Resort.

CRA Saskatchewan also plans to donate $5,000 to the Dorothy Wellnitz Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is available to employees and family members involved in the rental industry who are currently attending school to further their knowledge and skills in the business.

The Dorothy Wellnitz Scholarship

was started when the executive director of 21 years, Dorothy Wellnitz, retired from the association in 2006. Many local chapters contribute to the Scholarship Fund, which is administered by the American Rental Association (ARA).

Blair Holtsman of Hub-City Display, the Saskatchewan local president, welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced the guest speaker for the evening: Officer Rhiannon Waldner with Highway Transport.

Officer Waldner updated the group on new regulations for trailer safety, towing, large trucks, and more. Some of the highlights from her presentation:

• Drivers hauling loads weighing more than 4,600 kilograms on a trailer require a “G” endorsement on their class 5 driver’s licence.

• Business owners/ managers should contact Saskatchewan General Insurance (SGI) for details on how to get drivers certified with a “G” endorsement.

• Truck and trailer inspections should be completed every 24 hours. Drivers must have in their possession the most recent inspection report. In the event a truck is pulled over, reports cannot be more than 24 hours old.

• Drivers must have a log book if they travel more than a 160-kilometre radius from their home location or if they are hauling in excess of 5,000 kilograms.

• If store managers have questions regarding trailer safety, towing, safety inspections or truck modifications, they should contact SGI’s Vehicle Standards and Inspection unit at 1-800-667-8015, ext. 6188.

A call was issued during the meeting for new volunteers to join the trade show committee. Sara Ghiglione, Bill Brooks, Gene Elash and Shauna Murray all volunteered to join the existing trade show committee, which consists of Doug Mitchell, Blair Holtsman, Brad Williams, Lisa Bains, Brad Pattinson, Wayne and Tammy Beckett, Glen Loosyen and Brian Miller. Doug Mitchell has stated that he will set a trade show committee meeting date in January 2010 and notify the committee members.

CRA Saskatchewan meetings typically feature a guest speaker such as officer Rhiannon Waldner with Highway Transport.
Murray Logan was one of the presenters at the CRA Ontario meeting. He spoke on sustainable energy.

RENTAL RUMBLES

Glen Loosyen informed attendees that the CRA Saskatchewan golf tournament is set for June 17, 2010. Blair Holtsman noted that he and his wife, Jill, came out on the evening prior to the golf tournament last year and they had a wonderful time networking with other members of the rental industry. For this reason, he says that he would highly recommend coming early and staying over.

For more information on CRA Saskatchewan, please contact Blair Holtsman (President) or Lisa Bains (Secretary) at 1-306653-4429.

ALL Canada Cranes & Aerials adds new branches

ALL Canada Cranes & Aerials has announced the addition of two new facilities – one in Newfoundland and Labrador, and a second in Ontario.

ALL Canada Cranes & Aerials consists of the ALL Canada Crane Rental Corp. and ALL Aerials Ltd. The two companies operate independently under one roof, currently headquartered in Mississauga, Ont., with each having its own staff and fleet of equipment. The new branches will operate the same way and will be located in Mount Pearl, N.L., and Sudbury, Ont.

For the ALL family of companies, adding a new branch isn’t taken lightly. In ALL Cranes’ early years, success meant investing, not spreading out. The company founders made sure they established their brand and their service capabilities before they started expanding. “As the largest privately owned crane rental and sales company in North America, we know that the continued success of our company depends on many things, among them, good citizenship in the communities where we work,” says Michael Liptak, ALL Cranes president.

“At our new location in Newfoundland and Labrador, we will support local industry development projects with local hiring practices. ALL supports local suppliers whenever possible,” says Paul Dinn, general manager of the Newfoundland and Labrador facility.

New ‘Market Monitor’ service unveiled

Equipment rental industry-specific research has taken a giant step forward with the launch of the State of Equipment Rental Industry Outlook 2009-2014 Market Monitor service by the American Rental Association (ARA). This online subscription-based program provides subscribers with the latest economic information regarding the equipment rental industry compiled by respected economic forecasting firm IHS Global Insight. The information is updated quarterly.

A basic annual subscription to the Market Monitor service includes an economic overview and equipment rental revenue forecasts for the United States and Canada broken out into each equipment rental market segment — construction and industrial equipment,

general, and party and event — as well as U.S. national-level rental equipment investment data and quarterly updates.

Upgrades to the basic package can be purchased, enabling subscribers to access geographical and market specific information. As part of this new service, subscribing ARA members can opt to drill down and receive economic information at the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) level.

Annual subscriptions start at $100 and can range up to $3,000 for access to all the data, charges, figures and analyses available through the Market Monitor service. For an additional $50, subscribers will have access to the MSA of their choice.

“This is a tremendous step forward for measuring the shape and size of the equipment rental industry. The ability for our members to customize and receive only the information relevant to their business is a great new option. We are excited to offer this benefit to our members and anticipate that many will take advantage of the Market Monitor service, considering the accessibility of information and the pricing structure,” said Christine Wehrman, ARA’s executive vice-president and CEO. “This information is relevant and useful to all rental operators and suppliers in their daily business management.”

Ritchie Bros. to conduct two auctions in Orlando

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers will conduct its annual six-day unreserved public auction at its Orlando, Fla., permanent auction site from Feb. 15-20, 2010. The large auction will feature thousands of heavy equipment items and trucks – and every item will be sold to the highest bidder on auction day, with no minimum bids or reserve prices.

“The February Orlando auction is the largest Ritchie Bros. auction of the year as well as the world’s largest industrial auction each year. Last year, with a 200acre auction site and six days, it featured more items than any of our other auctions,” said Steve Kriebel, regional manager for Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. “This year, with thousands of equipment items and trucks being sold, we will

have something for almost everyone. This wide selection of equipment and our commitment to unreserved auctions help attract thousands of bidders from all over the world each year.”

Last February, Ritchie Bros. conducted its first six-day auction in company history at its Orlando site, selling more than 8,300 items over six days, generating US$184 million in gross auction proceeds and attracting 7,600 unique bidders from 75 countries.

A week prior to this February 2010 Orlando auction, Ritchie Bros. will be conducting a live benefit auction on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, starting at 6 p.m., at the American Rental Association Rental Show. All proceeds go to the ARA Foundation, which implements programs that create educational opportunities, build relationships and aid the equipment rental industry.

Last year’s ARA Foundation benefit auction received donations from 24 ARA Rental Show exhibitors. Auction proceeds were used to award 24 scholarships for 2009-2010 students pursuing rental-related education at accredited institutions. This year’s benefit auction features a wide range of donated items, including equipment and travel packages.

Like every Ritchie Bros. auction, both auctions will be unreserved, which means there are no minimum bids or reserve prices. Every item will be sold to the highest bidder on auction day, regardless of price.

ASAP Tent and Party Rentals goes green

ASAP Tent and Party Rentals has announced that the company has moved

into a culture of thinking green. The 20-year-old company offers tent rentals, party rentals, linen rentals, tableware rentals, and chair cover rentals, along with other accessories for weddings and corporate events.

In an effort to help the planet and the environment, the company has adopted a number of changes, which began several years ago. These changes include recycling all of their cardboard boxes, cutting down on waste and recycling and reusing paper to save trees.

The company has replaced all of its detergent and cleaning products with organic, natural cleaning products that are biodegradable and much safer for the environment. Gasoline burning trucks were replaced with newer, more fuel efficient diesel trucks. Schedule changes were introduced to further enhance fuel savings and reduce carbon emissions.

Indoor heating was changed from oil to propane and natural gas. “Every company can do their part, and all it takes is small changes,” says Dale Middleton, company spokesman. “By adopting these small changes, we are actually making a bold statement by going green, and when it comes to the health of our planet, every small effort really adds up,” he adds.

Another change that ASAP Tent and Party Rentals has made is the decision to use reusable plastic hangers in place of the one-time-use wire hangers that the

company previously used. This is a big, important recycling move, considering how often the company uses hangers.

These changes are all in addition to the biggest recycling effort of all: using recyclable china and tableware, table linen rentals, wedding linen rentals and chair cover rentals over and over again rather than creating waste by simply using disposable products.

“Every company can do their part, and all it takes is small changes,” says Middleton.

BOMAG BVP Plates

The current series of BOMAG BVP plates includes two models that cover the most common applications used on an occasional basis in the construction of farm and forestry roads, gardening, and landscaping. CONSTRuCTiON EQuiPMENT SOLuTiONS

Ammann AVP2220

Weighing in at only 220 pounds, powered by a Honda gas engine, the Ammann model AVP2220 is the ideal compaction equipment for the landscape trade, according to the company. With a

working width of 15.7 inches and a centrifugal force of 4950 pounds, this unit can be found working on all areas of a landscaping project, from retaining wall trenches to final compaction of interlocking stone work. The forward and reverse travel feature means this unit is highly manoeuvrable. The AVP2220 features a fold-up handle for easy transport, and endless adjustability of hydrostatic forward and reverse motion includes “on the spot” vibration. Standard machines are equipped with Honda power with a diesel engine option as well as a sturdy protection frame with central lifting point.

WEBER MT CR 5 Soil Compactor

The completely redesigned 650-pound CR 5 features 10,150 pounds of compaction force and numerous enhancements designed with the operator in mind. These include reduced lower hand/arm vibrations as well as reduced noise level through protection covers. Flexibility is provided through an adjustable handlebar to accommodate operators of different heights and a base plate with optional extension plates (22 and 28 inches). Maintenance is improved through an optimized are intake system and all maintenance points are easily accessible for simple servicing.

Finally, the CR 5 will join the line of soil compactors with the compaction control system COMPATROL in 2010, previously available only for machines above 900 pounds and 11,000 pounds of centrifugal force.

A.E. SALES Barreto TK Track Trencher

The new TK Track Trencher is available in 13-, 16-, 18-, 20- and 23-horsepower models. The track trenchers provide solutions to many of the challenges your customers face in trenching applications. Because of their large footprint, tracks are less invasive on the landscape. Cross-trenching is made simple and, by combining tracks with additional weight, the ability to keep the trench straight is greatly improved. The TK features an ergonomic singlehanded control and up to 48-inch trenching depth. The company says that as the new TK Track Trencher utilizes hydraulic technology to its optimum efficiency, the TK will work for you without you working on it.

ECHO POWER EQuiPMENT PB-770

According to Echo Power Equipment, the PB-770 will set the standard for power, comfort and durability in 2010. Featuring a 63.3 cc Power Boost Tornado engine, this blower is 2.4 pounds lighter than the PB-755. The company says it offers significantly increased performance, commercial

dual stage, side-mounted air filter, and posi–loc pipes with an integrated antistatic system. In addition, the frame and straps have been redesigned for unmatched comfort. The most significant improvement is the redesigned fan system that actually cools the operator’s back, making it more comfortable to operate for extended periods of time.

ELiET uSA

Eliet Edge Styler

The Eliet Edge Styler features frontwheel drive with castering rear wheel for tight-radius (10-inch) turns. It runs forward, so there is no dragging your edger backwards. The blade oscillates at 1,000 cycles/minute, giving a clean, almost polished, cut. The design is ergonomic and features adjustable, lowvibration handles for comfort and ease of operation. Other features include durable cast-iron wheels encased in chunky, studded rubber for sure, gentle grip on turf, and a dependable fourhorsepower Honda engine. The Eliet Edge Styler comes with five different blades for different applications, including wire trenching.

G.C. DuKE

Lawn Solutions Turf Revitalizer

According to G.C. Duke, the Lawn Solutions Turf Revitalizer line of power seeders is the most productive and easiest to use seeder in the industry. The six-horsepower model is designed for homeowner rentals, and features a massive 40-pound seed hopper and a four-inch diameter mixer to prevent clogging. A 30.5-inch width allows it to fit through standard size gates. The Lawn Solutions Turf Revitalizer is also available in a nine-horsepower model.

SPLiT-FiRE SALES 3255 Log Splitter

Split-Fire says this log splitter is designed for rental industry abuse. The 3255 is rated at only 14.5 tons but is capable of splitting logs up to three feet in diameter with ease. Its power source is a Gx 160 5.5-horsepower Honda. Splitting on both the forward and return strokes, the 3255 has a cycle time of only nine to 11 seconds. The design prevents logs from shooting out unexpectedly. Jammed logs are easily loosened by placing a log on the other side of the knife and backing the knife out. Shelves on either side of the bed keep split blocks from falling to the ground. An optional hydraulic log lifter is available. This splitter has

proven itself in the Canadian rental industry for more than 25 years.

TORO TRX-26

Toro is extending its line of dedicated walk-behind trenchers with the introduction of the Toro TRX-26. Boasting a 26-horsepower Kawasaki engine, the TRX-26 is ideal for utility workers, irrigation contractors and plumbers looking for the power of a rideon trencher, with the manoeuvrability and control of a walk-behind. Operatorfriendly controls make the TRX models more productive, and easier to learn and operate, and a lower centre of gravity means more stability on hills and uneven terrain. With many of the same features as the popular Toro TRX-15 and TRX-19 models, the TRX-26 makes trenching more efficient without putting any extra strain on the operator. The patented Toro Dingo TX-style control system on the TRX-26 makes it easy to control and eliminates the “jerk” steering required with handlebar control steering, allowing for smoother, more precise trenching. Three simple controls operate all traction and trenching functions, making the TRX-26 much easier to use and learn than other trenchers. And with its zero-turn capability and ground pressure as low as 4.1 psi, the TRX-26 has the ability to access confined spaces without damaging existing turf.

MiLLER SPREADER B-16 Power Buggy

First introduced in 1991, Miller B-16 Power Buggies have stood the test of time. The two-inch-thick solid plate steel frame provides high strength and structural integrity, plus greater durability and fine-tuned weight

distribution. The lower centre of gravity and weight distribution provide

excellent traction. Heavy-duty, semienclosed band brakes are designed to stop the buggy if the engine loses power or if dynamic braking is lost due to hydraulic system failure. These brakes will stop the buggy safely in wet or dry conditions, whether on a level grade or downhill slope. The B-16 is powered by a Honda engine directly coupled to a fan cooled, variable speed hydrostatic pump. All Miller Power Buggies are

equipped with foam-filled tires for additional safety, stability and value.

ATLAS POLAR Multilift XR 7

According to Atlas Polar, the popular Multilift XR 7 hooklift system is a major breakthrough in technology. The concept is based on a sliding hook mechanism and innovative new single-plate subframe. The result, says Atlas Polar, is a product that delivers outstanding performance with fast, easy body mount and demount functions. The company also says that the XR range brings you unrivalled levels of reliability and safety, plus smooth, efficient, troublefree operation.

Advance planning

Get the most out of the Canadian Rental Mart.

There’s an opportunity knocking. Time spent at the Canadian Rental Mart can be very rewarding, both for you personally and for your business. It’s a great time to make new contacts, renew existing relationships and see what’s new. Go in without a plan, though, and the opportunity will be wasted.

Trade shows can be an overwhelming experience, even if you’ve attended dozens over the years. Having a firm plan in place means that you’re sure to see everything you came to see. You’ll leave the show secure in the knowledge that you’ve spoken with the best people to help your business. Without a plan? Forget it.

Penny O’Sullivan of ABCO Equipment & Supplies has been attending industry trade shows since 1990. Her interest is the same as that of many of those in the rental industry: a desire to see what’s new.

“Everybody has a different strategy,” says O’Sullivan. “I like to

plan things out by getting a list of the vendors and then going through it to find the ones I’m most interested in. Getting to know the layout of the floor saves a lot of time in the long run.”

Simply walking in the door and wandering around has some obvious pitfalls. For one thing, the entire purpose of every single exhibitor’s booth is to attract your attention. Aisle after aisle will be filled with company reps that want to speak to you. Navigating past eye-catching displays to find what you’re really interested in can be daunting. And don’t forget the little guy in the back corner. What if he carries something that would turn out to be your most successful new line?

Planning your trade show excursion isn’t tough, but it needs to be done in advance. A couple of quiet hours spent planning is worth days of randomly wandering the show floor. Below are some great tips for making the most of your trade show experience.

Establish your goals

Know what you want going in. Your goals are going to dependent on a

large number of factors. Someone who is fairly new to the industry may simply want to visit as many booths as possible, and will plan accordingly. An old hand with lots of experience will probably want to be a little more selective, and target just the exhibitors that have something new to offer.

The experienced rental operator, however, may want to take some time to renew old acquaintances. This can be an extremely valuable part of the trade show experience, but it has to be handled properly. To maximize your time, the best strategy is to decide which relationships you want to renew in advance. This doesn’t mean you can’t stop for a five-minute unplanned chat, but be selective.

There’s a list of exhibitors at the Canadian Rental Mart included on page 28 of this issue. Along with the map on the same page, it makes a great starting point when it comes to planning your time.

Set a schedule and stick to it

Make sure to play to your strengths when it comes to setting your schedule. Sitting down and writing

CANADIAN RENTAL MART SHOW PREVIEW

CANADIAN RENTAL MART SHOW

out what you’ll be doing every minute of every day sounds efficient, but if you’re the sort of person who prefers to play things by ear, you will either drive yourself nuts or simply abandon your schedule completely within the first hour. A more fluid schedule might be the best thing for you if that’s the case.

In any event, make sure your schedule fits your personality. Don’t try to make your personality fit the schedule. You’re the one designing it, so you have complete control. You can also deviate from your schedule if you want, as long as you’ve got your priorities straight.

Here are some basic guidelines that you can follow if you wish. A good way to start scheduling is to break things up into phases:

Phase 1: Walk around and see the entire show floor. This should give you a good idea of who has what. You can also schedule appointments during this time.

Phase 2: Meet with the main suppliers that you already do business with.

Phase 3: Tour the big booths to

see if there’s anything you missed in Phase 1.

Phase 4: Check out some of the smaller booths. They may have something you’ll be interested in.

Phase 5: Anything else. It’s best to leave yourself an hour or two in your schedule that you can use to follow your nose. You never know what you’ll find.

Pre-emptive strikes Exhibitors want to talk to you. After all, that’s why they are there. But sales reps have a lot of demands on their time when they’re working shows, and they may not be able to give you the attention you deserve if you just wander by. The solution is simple. Make appointments to speak with them. Ideally, you can take some time before the show to set up these appointments.

You can also try stopping by the first morning of the show if you can’t swing an appointment in advance.

Do your best to be on time for any appointments you make. The customer may always be right, but that’s no excuse for bad manners.

Bring a large bag

Ever tried to stuff 12 pounds of assorted marketing materials into a laptop case? Trust us, it doesn’t work.

You’re going to be inundated with paper. Some of it will be important (business cards, specifications, price lists), but at least some of it will simply be junk. The most efficient thing to do would be to give serious and sober consideration to every single item, and to use prior experience to tell you if you should keep it or not.

However, efficiency is highly overrated. Situations like this don’t call for efficiency, they call for cramming every single thing you receive into a great big bag. You can sort through it at your leisure when you get home. The Canadian Rental Mart only lasts a few days. Don’t waste time weighing the pros and cons of picking up a flyer. Just grab everything and go. You have a recycling bin to deal with the eventual rejects.

Some trade show aficionados even recommend a large rolling suitcase

to tote your marketing materials. A point in their favour is that crowds tend to clear for someone towing a large piece of luggage. Crowds of rental pros tend to make sarcastic comments, too, along the lines of “Hey, couldn’t afford a hotel room?” and “Brought your store, huh?” If you can take the slings and arrows, it’s actually not a bad option.

Write things down

Feel free to take some notes. If you don’t want to look like a reporter, don’t carry your notebook in your hand. Instead, try to take a break every two hours or so, and write down anything interesting, while it’s still fresh.

All work and no play means Jack was dull to begin with.

There are a lot of social activities associated with trade shows. In fact,

Dean Nasato (left) of Wacker Neuson Canada speaks to Hank Heuvelen from Tim’s Rent-All in Bowmanville.

a lot of the public perception of these events is people having a good time on the boss’ dime. In the rental business, though, there’s a pretty good chance that you are the boss. Three days of partying sounds less attractive when you’re paying for it out of your own pocket.

With that said, don’t give all the social events a miss. It’s a great chance to talk shop with like-minded professionals. Students of business history know that more than one million-dollar deal foundered in the boardroom and was resurrected in the pub.

Jeff Campbell of St. Thomas Rent-All believes that trade shows are a great place to interact with a large number of successful rental operators and vendors.

“People contact is important,” says Campbell. “The social events

are really good for networking and meeting the salespeople. And not just the salespeople, the rest of the company, too. We don’t often get a chance to meet these people, and it can be good way to top up your education.”

Don’t waste time

Time is really the only commodity a person has. Don’t get trapped into hour-long presentations for products you’ll never buy just to be polite. If you’re really, really, REALLY not interested in new gensets, then say so. You’re doing yourself and the exhibitor a favour. They can pitch to someone else, and you can find something you are interested in.

Dress for success

In this case, that means casual wear with comfortable shoes. Convention centres and exhibition halls spare no expense when it comes to making sure carpets are as thin as possible. Maybe that’s just the way it seems to us, after walking around them for what seems to be the majority of our adult lives. In any case, don’t wear your hurtin’ shoes. Save the tie and tails for the social events.

The key to having a successful tradeshow experience is the same as with any endeavour. Be prepared, but leave yourself room for flexibility. And when you decide to do something, do it with gusto! n

Typecasting

Know your weaknesses and play to your strengths

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment is a questionnaire designed to measure preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. The preferences themselves were extrapolated from the theories of Carl Gustav Jung.

The original developers were Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers. They began developing it during the Second World War. The idea was that knowing their own personality preferences would help women who were entering the workforce for the first time identify the sort of jobs at which they would be most effective.

That original questionnaire grew into the assessment tool in use today. The MBTI is one of the best-known personality assessment tools, and is certainly one of the most widely used. According to some estimates, as many as two million assessments are administered annually.

Suzanne Price is the program coordinator of Pre-Media/ Media & Communications Fundamentals at Seneca College, and will lead a workshop on MBTI at the Canadian Rental Mart in March of 2010. She is a certified MBTI consultant through Psychometrics Canada. Price is a firm believer in the idea that someone can use the MBTI to help achieve his or her goals.

“For me, the MBTI was a complete turning point in my life,” says Price. “After a lifelong journey of entrepreneurial development, it was the one step I really needed. Since taking the assessment, I’ve experienced exponential growth in my life.”

It’s important to remember that the tool sorts for type, not ability. It’s designed only to tell you which things you prefer. It doesn’t tell you how strong your preference

is, and it doesn’t indicate which things you’re good at. In other words, it can show you prefer thinking, but not that you strongly prefer thinking, or that you’re good at thinking.

“The goal of the assessment really depends on how an individual or an organization wants to use it,” says Price. “As a college professor, I use it to help students find the path they really want to follow. In that case, the MBTI can be used as a springboard. Sometimes organizations will use the MBTI as a way to help filter applicants. I don’t look at it that way. I do not like to use it as a pigeonholing tool.”

One of the fundamental bases for the MBTI is the idea that people prefer one thing over the other, rather than a bit of both. The preferences indicated are polar opposites. You can think of these as being sort of like up and down, or backwards and forwards. You can go in either direction, but not both.

It’s also important to remember that no personality type is inherently better than any other. Nor does it limit your performance in a particular job. It may help to indicate which careers and management styles you prefer, but not your expected level of success in a field.

“One of the most intriguing things about these assessments is what it can teach us about how others communicate,” says Price. “Growing up, I often had disagreements with my sister and my parents. As it turns out, I tend to the opposite side from them regarding those fundamental dichotomies. Simply learning where other people are coming from is extremely helpful in your daily life.”

We can all use more help when it comes to communicating, and learning the communication styles of others will almost certainly lead you to greater success in both your personal and professional life.

Another basis of the MBTI is that individuals are considered to be the best judge of their own type. However, this only holds true if you answer the questions with complete honesty. Remember that there are no “right” answers on an MBTI questionnaire. The best thing to do is to simply answer with your true feelings. n

BARTELL MORRiSON ultra Low Emission exhaust systems

Bartell Morrison’s Ultra Low Emission (ULE) exhaust systems incorporate a proprietary Dry Selective Catalyst (DSC) system that reduces up to 99 per cent of the carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by any commercial fuel burning engine. According to Bartell Morrison, what makes the DSC innovative is a threeway catalytic converter that produces the highest reduction in greenhouse and smog related emissions, such as CO, HC and NOx. The converters use two different types of catalysts, a reduction catalyst and an oxidation catalyst. The technology effectively reduces the main components of greenhouse and smog producing gases. It is well known how detrimental the effects of carbon monoxide are when operators are exposed to this toxic gas for extended periods of time. Emissions may also have deleterious effects on new concrete projects. Carbonation is the result of the combination of the emitted gases with the moisture on the surface of the concrete. Carbonation results in a weak, sometimes up to a quarter inch thick, surface layer on the new concrete slab. Low emission mufflers help to prevent this problem.

Finning hosts investor Day, provides outlook

Finning International’s senior management provided an update on business activities and reviewed the company’s outlook for 2010 during a live webcast last month. The webcast and an archived audio file of management’s remarks are in the investor relations section of www.finning.com.

“Our sense is the economy is bottoming,” said Mike Waites, president and CEO of Finning. “We are seeing positive signs in mining in Canada and South America. We have a very strong company with a leaner cost structure. And we are driving further improvements in operations to take full advantage of growth going forward.”

On a consolidated basis, 2010 revenues are forecast to be down slightly from 2009. The 2010 outlook is for lower new equipment sales, which are expected to be partially offset by a modest increase in product support revenues.

Business conditions are expected to improve later in 2010. Based on the current outlook, the company anticipates earnings in 2010 to be up modestly over 2009.

The company expects to generate in excess of $200 million of free cash flow in 2010 and to continue to strengthen its balance sheet. The net debt to total capital ratio is expected to decline to 35 to 40 per cent by the end of 2010. The strong free cash flow and balance sheet will position the company well to take advantage of future opportunities.

Finning International Inc. is the world’s largest Caterpillar equipment dealer. Headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., the company operates in Western Canada, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay and the United Kingdom.

contractors to buy outright, the rental market is prime for smaller contractors who only have periodic dust suppression requirements.

According to Silvertop Supply, the main benefits of the Monsoon are:

• Lower operational cost. The Monsoon uses as little as a half litre per minute.

• Lower disposal fees. The Monsoon reduces the amount of water sprayed on demolition rubble, meaning less weight being trucked off site.

• Lower labour rates. The Monsoon is a stand-alone unit that eliminates the need for a worker to spray down the rubble with a hose.

• Versatility. The unit is available in gas, electric or diesel configurations. It comes mounted on a trailer that can easily be manoeuvred around the job site. A remote control allows the excavator or loader operator to adjust the output nozzle, changing the direction of the mist.

at 8 a.m. The Canadian Hospitality Night will cap off the first day of the show, Monday, Feb. 8, at the Doubletree Resort, International Drive, from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Please take the time to visit the suppliers’ websites prior to visiting the trade shows. This will increase your knowledge of the equipment at the shows, tell you what you should expect to see, and help you bring the right questions to the salespeople regarding the equipment you are interested in.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the CRA. Without your continued support, the CRA would not be where it is today.

This is my last message as president. I would like to thank Chairman Brad Williams, who is also concluding his term on the Executive Committee in February. His work throughout the years on the CRA board of directors has been successful in steering the CRA in the direction it is headed today.

I look forward to continuing on the Executive Committee in the position of chairman with Andrew Paquette as president. Andrew brings to us a wealth of information from his years serving on the ARA board of directors. I would like to welcome Wayne Beckett, who was elected senior vice-president and will begin his term at the AGM in February. Wayne is familiar to the CRA board, from his days of serving as Saskatchewan director and director at large.

As CRA president I have had the opportunity and pleasure of travelling to as many locales as I could fit into my schedule, over and above the regional trade shows and national board meetings. From a golf tournament in Alberta to a Bomber/Alouette game in Winnipeg, I must thank all the CRA locals who have welcomed me so heart-warmingly into their businesses and homes as I travelled the country.

A blessed and prosperous new year to you all. n

PROVINCE OF QUEBEC – CLAUDE POIRIER – (514) 217-6977

Creating economic aid

Rental

stores can do it for themselves.

With the global economic situation in the state it is in, I believe the time is now for us to learn to work together, as the pioneers of this great land did. While the days of the work bees – of having neighbours freely coming to one’s aid to build a home or a barn – are over, we need to recreate that same pioneer spirit, but in a more modern way.

For too long we have looked to government to help us out. It is plain to see when we point our fingers at government, their fingers point back to us. Truth is, economic change begins with us from the bottom up, not from the top down.

We must create a spirit of optimism and co-operation. We need to do something that is fair to all concerned and that could build better friendships, just as the work bees of the pioneers did. Today’s answer is not a work bee, but we can create the same effect!

Below is a simple, workable plan those in the rental industry might follow to do just that.

Work with a local service club such as Rotary or Lions.

Set up a tent on your parking lot, and divide the cost of tent rental between participating contractors.

Invite the community to come and

COMING EVENTS

meet the participating contractors. The guest pass would be a $10 fee, donated to the service club. Each trade could have its own discount to offer guests who hire it to do work, but they must come to the event to get the contractor’s coupon.

Approach the service club about putting together a silent auction with items donated by partners such as building supplies, flooring and window companies.

The participating contractors would have tables in the tent with their own promotional aids to hand out, with everyone sharing ideas, offering their services and advice to guests in a spirit of co-operation and progress. Of course, each facility would display equipment guests could rent with a discount coupon given to them by the vendor.

The possibilities are endless –from having local musicians donate entertainment or provide snack foods, to any other added feature to encourage people to come. Come and meet the contractors. Come and see the equipment you can rent to do your next home improvement. Come and learn ways to do home improvements and network with others in the community who want to take steps to improve their properties. Meet others who are making change happen.

The cost for the event would be

spread out over all those participating.

Contractors may contribute to the tent rental.

The service club would likely be glad to donate its time and effort to raise funds for its cause, reducing or eliminating the promotional costs. I’m certain local media would even donate promotional news. It may become a fundraising event that stimulates a community improvement program. It will stimulate a spirit of progress and hope – a spirit just like that of our early pioneers.

By working with others in the community and following this simple and achievable program, we can play a huge part in economic recovery. It begins with a spirit of co-operation that creates a shifting of attitude in the community, eventually shifting the nation’s attitude into one of hope and action.

This is an event that could benefit all concerned. The cost is just a little time, a little advertising expense, plus the willingness to join in with neighbours to get the job done. n
