Labor and Human Resources Secretary María del Pilar Vélez Casanova released a study on Thursday revealing that approximately one in four adults between 60 and 64 years old remained active in the workforce during the 2024 calendar year.

“Puerto Rico is an aging society, and this change has direct implications for the labor market,” Vélez Casanova said in a written statement.

The report indicated that in 2024, the non-institutionalized civilian population aged 60 and over was estimated at 963,000 people, representing an increase of 56,000 compared to 2020 and 35.1% of the non-institutionalized civilian population aged 16 and over.

In terms of labor force participation, the rate for people aged 60 and over was 10.4%. Employment for this group was estimated at 98,000 people, equivalent to 8.5% of total employment, while the unemployment rate was 2.1%.

Furthermore, the analysis by gender reflected that older men maintained higher levels of labor force participation, while the participation of women showed a gradual increase, associated with cultural changes and greater employment opportunities for this segment of the population.

The labor participation rate for people aged 60 and over was 10.4% in 2024.

The study also indicated that 863,000 people aged 60 and over remained outside the workforce, mainly due to retirement, household responsibilities, or health conditions. Of that total, 449,000 people were retired in 2024, according to the report.

The report, “People Aged 60 and Over: Employment and Unemployment Status,” based on the Labor Force Survey, can be accessed through the website mercadolaboral.pr.gov.

District 13 (Manatí, Florida, Barceloneta and Arecibo)

Rep. Jerry Nieves Rosario, who chairs the Northern Region Committee in the island House of Representatives, conducted a site visit earlier this week pursuant to House Resolution 282 to investigate the actions taken by the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP by its acronym in Spanish) regarding the serious and highly concerning problem of constant landslides and soil erosion on Highway 667 in the Cortés neighborhood of Manatí.

“We are thoroughly investigating the ongoing landslide problems on Highway 667 (between kilometer 6.5 and kilometer 6.8) in the Cortés neighborhood of Manatí, as this poses an imminent danger to our residents and those who travel through the area, since it is their only entrance and exit,” the lawmaker stated. “The other alternate route takes an hour.”

“This problem dates back to Hurricane Maria in 2017, when the mountain began to slide in those sections,” Nieves Rosario noted. “In one of those sections, urgent intervention is needed because the road is on the verge of collapse. This

could cause a road closure, as well as the collapse of the main water line of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, which supplies water to the community.”

District 13 Rep. Jerry Nieves Rosario said that along one of the sections of PR-667 in Manatí that has been subject to landslides “urgent intervention is needed because the road is on the verge of collapse. High court upholds advocate’s powers to impose fines for gender discrimination

Women’s Advocate Astrid Piñeiro Vázquez announced a legal victory on Thursday after the Puerto Rico Supreme Court upheld the authority of the Office of the Women’s Advocate (OPM by its initials in Spanish) to investigate, oversee and impose administrative fines in cases involving labor rights violations and gender-based discrimination in both public agencies and private entities.

The ruling, issued in case CC-20250009, stemmed from an OPM investigation launched on behalf of a pregnant worker who claimed she was removed from her job after informing her employer of her pregnancy.

The Supreme Court’s decision reaffirms that the OPM holds the legal power to enforce

PDP

the commonwealth’s public policy on gender equality and workplace protections.

Piñeiro Vázquez emphasized that the decision strengthens the office’s mandate to ensure women’s rights are protected across all sectors.

“With this ruling, the Supreme Court recognizes that the OPM has the authority to monitor, investigate, and impose fines on government agencies and private organizations that violate public policy or infringe upon the rights of women as guaranteed by the Constitution and the laws of Puerto Rico,” she said.

The case highlights the administration’s broader commitment under Gov. Jenniffer González Colón to promote women’s economic empowerment and dismantle systemic

barriers that limit women’s full participation in the workforce.

Piñeiro Vázquez added that the OPM’s enabling statute grants the office a clear mandate extending to “any association, organization, institute, or natural or legal person in [or for] which a woman works,” ensuring that the reach of justice extends to all workplaces.

“We will not allow the OPM to be made ineffective in an area as impactful as labor rights,” she said. “Stripping our investigative powers would contradict legislative intent and the public policy that inspired the office’s creation. Today, we reaffirm that the OPM has full authority to order corrective actions against any individual or entity that denies, obstructs, violates, or harms the rights and benefits of women.”

legislators: 11.5% tax on solar panels wasn’t sought by fiscal board

Popular Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers said Thursday that the 11.5% tax on solar panels and equipment was not a request from the Financial Oversight and Management Board, but rather a proposal from the administration of Gov. Jenniffer González Colón.

“We confirm to the country that our position is that a proper tax reform should be implemented, one that lowers taxes for the working class, without new taxes,” Sen. Luis Javier Hernández Ortiz said in a written statement.

Hernández Ortiz, the PDP minority leader in the Senate, and Héctor Ferrer Santiago, his counterpart in the House of Representatives, met with the oversight board’s executive director, Robert Mujica, to discuss the tax changes announced by the governor and which are currently under legislative review.

Also participating in the meeting were the alternate

minority leaders Sen. Marially González Huertas and Rep. Domingo Torres. According to reports, the process is in its initial stages, so there is still room to make adjustments that will benefit taxpayers.

“The Board will approve the proposed tax changes if they meet the established parameters,” Ferrer Santiago said. “The goal is a neutral impact, which is a requirement of the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA). In order to evaluate it, we need information from the government, which has not yet been provided.”

He added that there is currently no certainty regarding the numbers presented and that the Legislative Assembly will evaluate the bill in its entirety.

“Jenniffer González’s administration must provide the country and the Legislature with complete and detailed information on where they will generate the funds for the tax relief,” the PDP leader in the House said.

Héctor Ferrer Santiago, second from left, the Popular Democratic Party Minority Leader in the island House of Representatives.

Bill filed to shore up regulation of non-surgical aesthetic services

As a result of a legislative investigation that revealed serious regulatory deficiencies and significant risks to public health, Sen. Juan Oscar Morales Rodríguez has filed Senate Bill (SB) 971, a measure that seeks to create the “Law for the Comprehensive Regulation of Aesthetic Services and Serum Therapy in Puerto Rico.”

The filing follows the findings obtained in public hearings held by the Senate Health Committee, as part of Senate Resolution 107, previously introduced by Morales Rodríguez to investigate public policy and the implementation of both public and private health services on the island. During the

investigative process, specific attention was given to the notable proliferation of illegal or unauthorized practices related to dermatology, aesthetic procedures, and the administration of serum therapy, many of them performed by individuals without the academic training or credentials required by law. The public hearings highlighted the serious effects such practices have on patients’ health, including severe medical complications, infections, adverse reactions, and the use of medications and products not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The deceptive promotion by individuals and establishments falsely presenting themselves as healthcare professionals was also documented, taking advantage of regulatory gaps and the

absence of a uniform legal framework defining responsibilities and competencies.

“This problem is neither isolated nor anecdotal. We are facing a critical situation that puts people’s lives and health at risk,” Morales Rodríguez said. “... Senate Bill 971 is a responsible and necessary response to close legal loopholes, protect patients, and restore seriousness and rigor to these services.”

SB 971 establishes, for the first time in Puerto Rico, a comprehensive regulatory framework for non-surgical aesthetic services and intravenous therapy. The measure clearly defines what constitutes a regulated aesthetic procedure, who can perform it, under what conditions, and with what level of professional supervision.

Regulations for confiscating slot machines go into effect

Regulations establishing the procedure for the confiscation of slot machines operating illegally in Puerto Rico went into effect on Thursday, after being adopted by the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission and the Puerto Rico Police Bureau.

“The promulgation of these regulations responds to an obligation imposed by law and reaffirms our commitment to implementing clear, fair, and uniform processes in the oversight of gambling machines,” Gaming Commission Executive Director Juan Carlos Santaella Marchán said in a written statement.

The Regulations for the Confiscation of Gambling Machines, identified as Regulation No. 9718, establishes the rules applicable to the confiscation, custody, preservation, and disposal of slot machines operating in violation of the law. It also details the stages of the administrative process, including the seizure of the machines, the right to appeal, and the handling of confiscated property.

Operating a gaming machine without a valid license and sticker constitutes a misdemeanor, with penalties that may include up to six months in jail, fines of up to $10,000, or both, in addition to the revocation of other permits.

The regulations clarify that no additional financial burdens are imposed on businesses, as the applicable fines

and penalties stem from existing legislation. Furthermore, it provides for the creation of a special fund that will be financed by income generated from fees, fines, administrative penalties, and other charges related to the relevant procedures. The confiscated machines will be transferred to a warehouse under the control of the Gaming Commission.

According to reports, the first $12 million collected from gambling machines will be allocated to the General Fund. Once that amount is reached, 55% of the revenue will be deposited into the Police Retirement Trust, as stipulated in Law 42-2020.

Santaella Marchán warned that anyone operating a machine without a valid license and sticker commits a misdemeanor, with penalties that may include up to six months in jail, fines of up to $10,000, or both, in addition to the revocation of other permits.

The official urged citizens to confidentially report businesses operating in violation of the law through the official website of the Gaming Commission, under the Gambling Bureau-Route Machines section.

UPR Agricultural Extension to offer home garden course in Arecibo

The Agricultural Extension Service of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) will offer a home garden course in Arecibo on four dates in February and March aimed at people interested in learning how to establish and maintain a garden at home, even with just little land available.

“For this offering, we have already allocated space at the Institute for Women’s Development in the Los Caños sector of Arecibo,” Arecibo Mayor Carlos Ramírez Irizarry said on Thursday. “The instructor for the workshop is Professor Mirelis Soto Vélez, an agricultural agent.”

The theoretical and practical workshop is designed to be easy to understand and apply, even for those unfamiliar with home gardening. It can be easily implemented in small spaces

such as multi-family dwellings.

With ongoing inflation and the reality of food insecurity, creating a home garden, whether in pots or on small plots of land, is becoming increasingly common. Some of the benefits of maintaining a home garden include improved health through physical activity, access to more nutritious and flavorful food, enhanced food security, and cost savings, as detailed by Prof. Myrna Comas Pagán in the curriculum guide “Home Gardens: A Guide to Family Food Security.”

The available dates are Fridays, Feb. 13, 20 and 27, as well as Friday, March 6, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Those interested can register through the link: https://forms. office.com/r/ct9UJEYM2S. For more information or to confirm availability: 787-652-0065 ext. 3307 / 3304 or email mirelis. soto@upr.edu.

Inter-agency pact aims to deter fraud in use of federal reconstruction funds

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced Thursday that the Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resiliency (COR3) has formalized a collaborative agreement with the Department of Justice and the Puerto Rico Police Bureau to strengthen oversight of federal reconstruction funds and improve fraud detection.

The agreement outlines strategies to prevent and identify fraud involving funds allocated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). It also establishes information-sharing protocols to streamline investigations into potential misuse of FEMA money.

“Combating corruption in all its forms is one of the commitments in our Program of Government,” González Colón said in a written statement. “A coordinated effort among investigative agencies brings us closer to effective and preventive oversight. This agreement is a commitment to transparency, a commitment to zero tolerance for corruption, and a message that law-enforcement agencies will not wait for referrals to take action.”

COR3 Executive Director Eduardo Soria Rivera said the collaboration reinforces existing mechanisms to identify and penalize anyone who misuses reconstruction funds.

“As the coordinating entity for FEMA funds, COR3 has the responsibility to ensure that the money is used with integrity

and for its approved purpose,” Soria Rivera said.

Police involvement will be key, officials said, because once a potential fraud scheme is identified, the Police Bureau is responsible for gathering evidence for analysis and possible prosecution by the Justice Department.

Police Superintendent Joseph González said the partnership will help agencies work more efficiently against fraud.

“This agreement with COR3 and Justice allows us to work together to prevent, detect and quickly process any scheme that attempts to divert funds meant for Puerto Rico’s recovery,” he said. “The message is clear: zero tolerance for fraud. Every FEMA dollar is for rebuilding essential infrastructure and serving the people.”

Jack Smith defends Trump investigations before lawmakers

Jack Smith, the special prosecutor who investigated Donald Trump, appeared before lawmakers Thursday to defend his decision to indict Trump twice after he left office in 2021. It was Smith’s first and perhaps only chance to make his case in an official forum.

“No one should be above the law in this country, and the law required that he be held to account,” Smith said in his opening remarks. “So that is what I did.”

The hearing poses significant risks to Smith, who has said he believes Trump and his appointees will seize on the smallest misstep to investigate, prosecute and humiliate him. But it also provides him with what is likely to be his best opportunity to challenge Trump’s justification for deploying the Justice Department to pursue his enemies: that he was persecuted for his politics, not for his misdeeds.

A television displays Jack Smith, the special prosecutor who twice indicted Donald Trump, testifying during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026. The appearance provided Smith with what is likely to be his best opportunity to challenge President Trump’s assertion that he was persecuted for his politics, not for his misdeeds. (Kenny Holston/The New York Times)

Republicans berated Smith, repeatedly accusing him of participating in a Democratic conspiracy to destroy Trump.

But they offered no new evidence to support that claim, and spent much of their time rehashing political arguments and grilling Smith about his decision to seek a court order for metadata about phone calls Trump and his allies made to nine lawmakers as they sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Smith and his team interfered in the “democratic process by seeking to muscle a candidate for a high office,” Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, said in his opening statement.

The witness denied those claims, offering calibrated and mostly emotionless replies that contrasted with the high-volume attacks and defenses emanating from the dais.

Before sitting at the witness table, Smith smiled and nodded at four law enforcement officers who were attacked by the pro-Trump mob at the Capitol — Michael Fanone, Daniel Hodges, Aquilino Gonell and Harry Dunn.

Smith’s remarks represent the summation he was never allowed to deliver in a courtroom and conclude that Trump “engaged in criminal activity” that undermined democracy and the rule of law.

In his statement, Smith accused Trump of “engaging in a criminal scheme to overturn the results” of the 2020 election.

The path that led to Smith’s testimony mirrored a tortuous legal and political odyssey that began in 2023, when he filed the first federal criminal charges against a former president. It ended the next year when Trump won the presidency, intent on exacting vengeance on those who had prosecuted him.

For all their public denunciations of Smith, House Republicans had been privately reluctant to give him a public forum to make his case against Trump, after courts threw out charges against him in Florida and the District of Columbia.

Thursday’s testimony follows months of back-and-forth. Lawmakers debated how to proceed, and Smith demanded

that he be given the right to defend his team. Lawmakers and Smith’s lawyers also wrestled over what the former special prosecutor was allowed to talk about (the election interference indictment in Washington) and what he was not allowed to discuss (many details about the document-retention case sealed by a Trump-appointed judge in Florida).

Jordan scheduled the public hearing following closeddoor testimony by Smith on Dec. 17, an appearance that struck even his Republican critics as sure-footed and free of the type of misstep that might have led to a criminal prosecution on the grounds that he deceived or stonewalled Congress.

Republicans, led by Jordan and Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, have suggested that Smith was motivated by partisan politics and have placed him at the center of what they have said was a conspiracy to weaponize the Justice Department against Trump and his allies.

The FBI, now run by a Trump ally, Kash Patel, has scoured its vast holdings to root out negative information about those who once investigated Trump and his supporters, an undertaking critics have called an opposition research operation.

On the eve of Smith’s appearance, the bureau continued to selectively release portions of Smith’s files to impugn him and the work of his team.

This time, the disclosure was made to conservative journalist John Solomon. On Wednesday morning, he cited FBI documents in reporting that prosecutors working for Smith had paid thousands of dollars to online sleuths to help them look for video evidence tying Trump supporters who attended the president’s rally near the White House on Jan. 6, 2021, to the subsequent riot at the Capitol.

The work of the sleuths, often known as sedition hunters, was widely used to bring criminal cases against hundreds of the rioters. But Patel told Solomon that Smith’s payments for their help amounted to “a stunning abuse of bureau authorities.” Patel also vowed to disclose the ma-

terial to Congress, raising the possibility that Smith would be questioned about the sedition hunters Thursday.

The last time Smith testified — in the closeddoor session — he spoke freely about the charges he filed accusing Trump of seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election. But he was more constrained in commenting on the other criminal case he brought, which charged Trump with illegally holding on to reams of classified materials after leaving the White House in 2021.

He will face the same prohibition in his testimony Thursday given that the expansive report he wrote about the documents case remains under seal because of an order issued by Judge Aileen Cannon, the Trump appointee who oversaw the proceeding.

Her order expires Feb. 24, but Trump has been trying to prevent the report from seeing the light of day. On Tuesday, his lawyers asked Cannon to permanently keep it under wraps, arguing that its release would “improperly endorse” Smith’s “unlawful investigation and prosecution” of the case and “irreparably harm President Trump.”

Smith was appointed in late 2022 to oversee the investigations, but he dropped both cases after Trump was elected to a second term, citing court rulings that prevented prosecution of a sitting president.

The House Judiciary Committee has already made a criminal referral of one of Smith’s top deputies, Thomas Windom, to the Justice Department for not fully answering similar questions. Windom, now Smith’s law partner, has denied wrongdoing.

Ex-Uvalde officer found not guilty of endangering children in mass shooting

More than three years after a gunman massacred 21 people at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary in one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history, a former school police officer was found not guilty of abandoning or endangering children.

Adrian Gonzales, the first officer to arrive at the school, was facing 29 counts of abandoning and endangering children, 19 for the dead, 10 more for survivors, after seven hours of deliberations Wednesday.

The verdict delivered a devastating blow to families of the victims and survivors who have clamored for accountability for the delayed police response on May 24, 2022.

During the three-week trial, prosecutors argued that Gonzales, 52, failed to stop the gunman despite a witness alerting him to his whereabouts moments before the assailant stormed two connected classrooms.

Defense lawyers persuaded the jury that Gonzales had done the best he could with the information he had and that at least three other officers had arrived seconds later and also failed to stop the gunman. They also presented evidence that Gonzales had rushed into the building minutes after arriving, but retreated with the other officers after shooting had begun.

Some members of the victims’ families cried and shook their heads in disappointment in the courtroom after the verdict was read, but did not otherwise react. Gonzales hugged defense attorneys after he learned of his fate and wiped tears from his eyes.

Bill Turner, a special prosecutor, told the jury during closing arguments of the much-anticipated trial that Gonzales had failed to act within the first two minutes of the attack, which is the time he believed most of the children and teachers died. Some of the children were shot more than a dozen times, some at close range, an expert for the prosecution testified.

“You can’t stand by when a child is in danger,” Turner told the jury during closing arguments. “Police officers have a special duty.”

“Stop the killing. Stop the dying, even if you are the only one there,” he added.

During his closing arguments, Jason Goss, a lawyer for the defense, argued that Gonzales was singled out for the inaction of many other officers that day. “He was acting. He was trying. None of those officers are in that chair,” Goss said, pointing at his client.

The mass shooting took place at around 11:30 a.m., days after the gunman, Salvador Ramos, just shy of his 18th birthday, purchased two AR-15-style rifles and more than 1,700 rounds of 5.56-mm hollow-point bullets. He made his way to two connected classrooms, 111 and 112, and unleashed a barrage of gunfire while some victims repeatedly called 911 for help.

A tactical team, led by federal Border Patrol agents, eventually confronted and killed the gunman.

Two teachers were also killed in the attack but Gonzales did not face charges in connection with their deaths.

The Uvalde police response has become a lesson in what not to do during active shooter situations. Police departments in Texas and elsewhere have revised their training, including more aggressive tactics that ask officers confronting an active shooter to risk their own safety to protect civilians.

In all, about 370 officers were involved in the police response that day in Uvalde. Dozens crammed into a school hallway, near the two classrooms under siege, but most officers remained outside the campus. Only two officers have been charged, though others were fired or left their jobs.

Leaving the courtroom Wednesday, Jesse Rizo, whose 9-year-old niece died in the massacre, said that not only was the gunman a monster, but Gonzales was, too, for failing to stop him. “They failed us over and over,” he said.

An emotional Gonzales spoke briefly after the verdict, thanking God and his lawyers. “He put them on my path,” he said, holding back tears. He said he was not ready to address the families of the victims.

The convictions of officers who fail to follow protocols for mass shootings are a rarity. A jury in Parkland, Florida, in the trial of a former sheriff’s deputy, Scot Peterson — who was also charged with child neglect and other crimes for not confronting the gunman who killed 17 people at a high school in 2018 — also found him not guilty.

Turner called at least two witnesses to the stand who testified that Gonzales had received active shooter training and was also a co-instructor of a similar course.

A second officer, former school police chief Pete Arredondo, is expected to face trial later this year on similar charges as Gonzales did. Arredondo is accused of treating

Memorials honoring the victims of the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Sept. 30, 2024. (Christopher Lee/The New York Times)

the incident as one involving an assailant barricaded inside, which meant trying to negotiate a surrender, and not an active shooter situation, which requires a more immediate and aggressive response. He has pleaded not guilty.

Earlier in the trial, the prosecution played a long video of an interrogation of Gonzales that took place a day after the massacre. In it, Gonzales described following the sounds of gunfire and finding a distressed school employee who told him that a man in black was headed toward Robb Elementary.

Gonzales told the investigator that in the moments after he arrived at the school, he focused on the woman under duress and not on the gunman’s movements.

“It was my mistake, but it’s just the adrenaline rush going and, you know, shots fired and stuff like that,” he told the investigator.

In the video, Gonzales said he waited for three other officers to enter the school, but all of them retreated after the gunman shot two of them from inside the classrooms.

“Everybody flew back, you know, so I think he got hit,” he said of one of the officers. “We kind of moved back.”

“Never went in until I got coverage,” Gonzales said, referring to police backup. He did not shoot at the gunman, he said, because he “never saw him.”

He then described breaking windows to help children evacuate.

Melodye Flores, a teacher at Robb Elementary at the time, told the jury that she was outside when she alerted an officer she assumed to be Gonzales of the gunman’s location.

“I said that he was heading into the fourth-grade building, and we needed to stop him,” Flores told the jury. “We needed to go in and stop him before he went in.”

“He just stayed there,” she said of the officer.

Nico LaHood, another lawyer for the defense, poked holes in Flores’ recollection of the events, including that she mistook the assailant’s rifle for a handgun. She also told investigators that Gonzales was wearing khakis and a white shirt and had a beard. He was cleanly shaven that day and wore a blue school police uniform.

LaHood maintained that Gonzales, with only a handgun, was insufficiently armed to challenge a gunman wielding a semiautomatic rifle, and that he did not have a “line of sight” to shoot the gunman, even after he was told of his movements. Putting himself in harm’s way would had distracted the responding officers, not the gunman, LaHood told the jury.

“If you are injured or killed, you’re no good to people that you’re trying to help,” he said.

Some family members attending the trial became emotional listening to the harrowing testimony and seeing crime scene images and their children’s autopsies. The judge overseeing the case, Sid Harle, asked officers to remove the sister of one of the teachers killed, Velma Lisa Duran, after she burst into screams Tuesday afternoon.

The trial got off to a rocky start, after a former teacher disclosed information during testimony that had not been shared with the defense. The revelation threw the case into legal chaos, with the judge overseeing the case, Sid Harle, ordering the jury to disregard her testimony.

Please, world leaders, don’t appease America

President Donald Trump pounces on weakness, but retreats from strength. That’s one reason for Europe’s present troubles: For too long it was weak both toward Russia in the East and toward the new menace arising in the West.

That’s certainly Trump’s perception. “I think they’re weak,” Trump said last month of European leaders, and he had a point. They fawned over him and meekly surrendered as he steamrolled them with tariffs.

Trump was preying upon that weakness as he threatened to seize Greenland and effectively destroy NATO, while warning of a new trade war if Europe resisted. In Davos on Wednesday, perhaps reacting to European pushback, he backed off somewhat: “I don’t have to use force” to acquire Greenland, he said. “I won’t use force.” Later in the day he withdrew, at least for now, the threat to impose new tariffs on Europe over the Greenland dispute.

Earlier, he had posted a map showing Greenland, Canada and Venezuela all as part of the United States.

It has come to this: Canadian military planners reportedly are gaming how they might repel a U.S. invasion with guerrilla tactics similar to those used by Afghan fighters.

Fortunately, the shock of Trump’s Greenland demands may finally be leading world leaders to awaken to the American threat. (How weird even to type that!)

“Until now, we tried to appease the new president in the White House,” Prime Minister Bart De Wever of Belgium said Tuesday. “We were very lenient, also with the tariffs, we were lenient, hoping to get his support for the Ukraine war.”

“But now so many red lines are being crossed,” he added. “Being a happy vassal is one thing, being a miserable slave is something else.”

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk made a similar point on social media: “Appeasement is always a sign of weakness,” he wrote. “Europe cannot afford to be weak — neither against its enemies, nor ally. Appeasement means no results, only humiliation.”

President Emmanuel Macron of France called Trump’s latest tariff threats “unacceptable.” He added, in a statement that notably equated the menace from Trump to that of Vladimir Putin: “No intimidation or threat will influence us — neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland.”

The dangers of appeasement should, of course, have been fully absorbed by Europeans in the 1930s. As Winston Churchill warned Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain after the Munich agreement with Hitler in 1938: “You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war.”

President Richard Nixon and other conservative Americans likewise counseled the importance of standing up to communists by quoting a supposed instruction by Lenin: “Probe with bayonets. If you encounter mush, proceed; if you encounter steel, withdraw.”

own way forward.

“When the rules no longer protect you, you must protect yourself,” he said, describing this as a “rupture” with the past. “But let’s be clear-eyed about where this leads. A world of fortresses will be poorer, more fragile, and less sustainable.”

He’s right, and that is indeed the world that Trump is leading us all into. It’s a tragedy for Americans as well as our former allies.

That’s why it’s important that Europeans respond to new Trump tariffs, if he revives them, with retaliatory tariffs and their “bazooka” sanctions on American service companies. Indeed, it seems probable that Trump dialed back threats of force and of new tariffs because of the hostile reaction, including from the stock market.

I reached out to Chris Patten, one of the European figures I most respect — a former senior figure in Britain’s Conservative Party, then governor of Hong Kong and later Europe’s foreign policy chief and chancellor of Oxford University. Patten returned my call just as a particularly erratic Trump was telling a news conference that America had never been more respected, and he could hear Trump’s voice in the background.

Leaders who pushed back at Trump did better than the Europeans. One is China’s president, Xi Jinping, who retaliated aggressively against Trump’s tariffs by curbing exports of rare earth minerals — forcing Trump to back off. Indeed, Trump has since then been unusually conciliatory toward Beijing, allowing sales of advanced chips and quietly accepting China’s bullying of Japan and Taiwan.

The other is Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. His predecessor, Justin Trudeau, had been conciliatory, but the result was mockery from Trump and calls for Canada to become America’s 51st state. Carney from the outset was polite but resistant, and Trump has been somewhat more respectful toward Canada since, even as Ottawa has pursued new partnerships elsewhere.

Just last week, Carney reached a landmark trade deal with China that laid the groundwork for much closer economic ties. Some Americans are angry, but Carney said bluntly that China is now a “more predictable” trade partner than the United States. And Trump, instead of erupting with venom, calmly accepted the Canada-China deal.

“Middle powers must act together because if we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu,” Carney said in a quite brilliant speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday. He did not shake his fist or indulge in insults, but he indicated that the United States was no longer trustworthy and that Canada would find its

“You’re listening to those rambling mendacities,” he said, “of the demented leader of the free world.” Those are the words of a temperate British conservative who has been an outspoken fan of America throughout his career, yet who is today aghast at the sight of the United States destroying its soft power worldwide. Patten hopes European leaders will be willing to stand up to Trump because, “sooner or later, he has to be stopped.”

Pianist Ramos Santana, PRSO to pay homage to Spain

When piano fans in Puerto Rico find themselves in company with Hispanophiles, one thing can put them on Cloud 9 faster than anything: the island’s most esteemed classical pianist interpreting a masterful fusion of both elements by Spain’s most revered composer Manuel de Falla with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra (PRSO).

This Saturday’s eighth concert in the PRSO’s current cultural season will also feature an orchestra tribute to Spain by a French composer considered by de Falla to have captured the spirit of Spain better than many native composers.

José Ramos Santana will interpret the most beloved keyboard piece from the Iberian peninsula: “Nights in the Gardens of Spain” (Noches en los jardines de España) under the baton of Chilean musical director Maximiano Valdés.

The Manhattan-based Ramos Santana, who has not performed with the PRSO since the recent COVID-19 pandemic, has made this lush tone poem his own many times throughout the world.

But nothing made him prouder than to be invited to substitute for the towering Barcelona-born interpreter of this beloved masterpiece, Alicia de Larrocha (1924-2009), when she was forced to cancel in New Mexico. That substitution with the Albuquerque Symphony some three decades ago was particularly serendipitous, because from his early years Ramos Santana had admired de Larrocha and the Hispanic repertoire she so ardently defended during her almost 80

regional societies in the world.

Ramos Santana, known to his fans as “Kiko,” has performed with many of the great orchestras all over the world, but still finds time to teach in the Steinhardt School of Music at New York University and the Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C.

Opening the program will be “Elegia andina” (Andean Elegy) by contemporary U.S. pianist and composer Gabriela Lena Frank. In a search for her mother’s Peruvian roots over quarter of a century ago, she found material that influenced her use of traditional folk instruments and her own special techniques with conventional flutes and percussion.

Frank’s first work for orchestra premiered in 2000. Her pilgrimage to the Andean nation was a quest to discover, in her own words, “how much Latina and how much gringa” she had in her.

The concert will close with Felix Mendelssohn’s “Third Symphony,” known for its unique progression from minor to major keys. Although the 40-minute piece, played attacca, or without interruption between movements, opens in A minor, it progresses through four movements to the major key.

years on the stage.

Also on the program is French impressionist composer Claude Debussy’s “Iberia: Orchestral Images Suite No. 2,” representative of the European infatuation of all things Spanish in the 19th century as seen by Spain’s nearest neighbor.

“I have played this piece many times throughout the world,” said the Puerto Rico native in a text talk with the STAR this week. Nevertheless, he has been practicing the three-movement piece that he first approached decades ago as if it were a world premiere. “Noches,” as Ramos Santana affectionately refers to his signature piece, “is based on the Asturian culture,” exemplified, he notes, by the “cante jondo” (deep song) of the third and final movement “In the Gardens of the Cordoba Rocky Mountain Range.” This most serious form reflects the centuries of marginalization and hardship suffered by the Roma (Gypsy) people of southern Spain. It represents the purest and most intense of the Romani dances, with roots from the Arabic, Hebrew and Byzantine cultures.

So admired by serious artists were these unique songs and dances that in 1922 de Falla joined forces with the great Spanish poet Federico García Lorca to create a flamenco competition in Granada to preserve the genre.

Faithful to his own roots, Ramos Santana is the founder of the Puerto Rico International Piano Festival held annually at the Puerto Rico Conservatory and has collaborated with sculptor and entrepreneur-cum-hostess Jan D’Esopo on initiatives by the Steinway Society of Puerto Rico to support local pianists. D’Esopo, the owner and artistic soul of The Gallery Inn in Old San Juan, has been a longtime fan and collaborator with the pianist, who has given several intimate concerts in the boutique bed and breakfast, which boasts six Steinways and provides a headquarters for one of the very few Steinway

And in another rare irony, the Hispanic flavor of the program and a significant anniversary have been overlooked. The STAR has learned that Maurice Ravel’s originally programmed warhorse “Bolero” has been scrapped due to extra instrumentation, although this has not been confirmed. While the excessive royalty costs for the United States expired only three weeks ago, the 17-minute piece requires excessive extra expenditure for rare instruments like the oboe d’amore and extra musicians for what has been identified as perhaps the most performed of short pieces in the world orchestra repertoire.

Ironically, this is a year celebrating the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth, perhaps the reason for including the piece, which has not had excessive exposure in Puerto Rico.

Either way, Mendelssohn, born more than two centuries ago, made sure the evening would end on a major note.

The concert will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Pablo Casals Symphony Hall at Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center in Santurce.

Stocks rise as dollar dips after Trump’s walk-back of Greenland threats

MSCI’s global equities gauge was higher on Thursday and the dollar dipped as investors showed signs of relief a day after U.S. President Donald Trump dropped tariff threats against eight European countries and ruled out seizing Greenland by force.

Trump said on Thursday that the details of a U.S. agreement over Greenland are still being worked out after he stepped back from threats to seize the Danish territory.

In an interview on Fox Business Network from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump said any deal would allow the U.S. “total access” to Greenland, including for the military, “at no cost.”

Data from the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis showed the U.S. economy grew a bit faster than initially thought in the third quarter and corporate profits were also revised higher.

The upwardly revised 4.4% annualized growth rate in U.S. GDP was the fastest pace since the third quarter of 2023, while U.S. consumer spending increased solidly in November and October.

The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits increased marginally last week, suggesting the labor market likely maintained a steady pace of job growth in January.

But after the sharp sell-off in U.S. stocks earlier in the week on Greenland concerns, investors were taking U.S. economic data in their stride on Thursday as they digested Trump’s turnaround from earlier threats, said Rick Meckler, partner at Cherry Lane Investments in New Vernon, New Jersey.

“Overwhelming all other news is the Greenland story, and the suggestions that are now withdrawn of military action or tariffs,” Meckler said. “The market tends to react to emergencies, and it seems the emergency aspect of this is over for now.”

Meckler noted, however, that Thursday’s trading was “more a relief rally ... than an understanding whether there’s a material change in the world economic order and how the U.S. is going to interact with its traditional trading partners.”

On Wall Street at 2:40 p.m. (1940 GMT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 410.15 points, or 0.83%, to 49,484.06, the S&P 500 rose 49.23 points, or 0.72%, to 6,924.85 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 246.26 points, or

1.06%, to 23,469.79.

MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe rose 8.76 points, or 0.85%, to 1,037.41.

Earlier, the pan-European STOXX 600 index closed up 1.03%.

In currencies, the safe-haven U.S. dollar was lower after Trump’s turnaround on Greenland, and was little changed by U.S. economic data.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, fell 0.53% to 98.36.

The euro was up 0.53% at $1.1744 while against the

Japanese yen, the dollar strengthened 0.11% to 158.43. Sterling strengthened 0.47% to $1.3488.

In U.S. Treasuries, benchmark yields rose but remained confined to a narrow range, as investors prepared for bouts of volatility and awaited clarity on the Greenland framework deal being negotiated between the U.S. and European leaders.

“A little bit of the policy shock has been taken off the table, but only for the moment. And it is a relief, but at the same time, it increased the market’s wariness around the potential for this to happen again,” said Tony Rodriguez, head of fixed income strategy at Nuveen.

After Trump’s ultimatum, Greenland talks include sovereign US bases, no drilling for Russia

Negotiations to resolve the future of Greenland have focused in recent days on proposals to increase NATO’s presence in the Arctic, give America a sovereign claim to pockets of Greenland’s territory and block potentially hostile adversaries from mining the island’s minerals.

Those elements, described by eight senior Western security and diplomatic officials, offer the fullest picture yet of the contours of a potential Greenland compromise that President Donald Trump announced Wednesday without details. His move appeared to at least temporarily defuse an American-made transAtlantic crisis over the Danish territory.

Critically, the proposals under discussion would stop short of Trump’s goal of transferring ownership of all of Greenland to the United States from Denmark, according to the officials, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomacy. The officials cautioned that many details have yet to be finalized.

It is unclear if these discussions will ultimately yield agreement over the territory. Denmark, which publicly opposes ceding ownership of any Greenlandic land, may not agree to the plans on the table. Still, the officials said they were hopeful that they could simultaneously address Trump’s stated concerns about securing the Arctic against possible threats from Russia and China while holding to Europe’s “red line” that Greenland was not for sale.

To do that, the proposals would:

— Create a significant new NATO mission in the Arctic. Multiple officials have dubbed this mission “Arctic Sentry,” in a nod to similarly named NATO missions in the Baltic Sea and Eastern Europe that are meant to counter an increasingly aggressive Russia.

— Update a pact signed between Denmark and the United States in 1951. The pact gives the U.S. military wide access to Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, for operations including the construction and operation of military bases. U.S. officials have said they are concerned that this access could be curbed or ended if Greenland were to obtain independence. NATO officials have discussed expanding the 1951 pact with a new agreement that

would effectively create pockets of American soil in the territory.

— Such an agreement would likely be modeled on a “sovereign base area” agreement in Cyprus, where Britain’s military bases are regarded as British territory. That would give the United States greater control over the land than it currently exerts over U.S. embassy sites. Trump and other officials have said that territory in Greenland could prove important for his plans to build a so-called Golden Dome missile defense system for the United States, which could include components stationed in Greenland.

— Restrict non-NATO member countries, particularly Russia and China, from obtaining rights to mine the rare-earth minerals that lie deep under Greenland’s ice sheet.

All of those plans have been under discussion inside NATO over the last year, as a direct response to Trump’s stated ambitions. Since returning to the White House in 2025, Trump has described publicly, with increasing intensity, his desire to own Greenland. Denmark, with equal intensity, has insisted it would not sell, with Danish leaders saying that the island’s fate is up to Denmark, not NATO. Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said Thursday he was not in favor of giving the United States sovereignty over military bases there. “We are ready to discuss a lot of things,” Nielsen said, adding, “Sovereignty is a red line.”

The idea of giving the U.S. a sovereign claim to its bases in Greenland, similar to Britain’s bases in Cyprus, was raised among NATO and Western military officials Wednesday, according to two officials, one of whom was present in those discussions. Asked for comment, Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich, the top NATO commander in Europe, said in a brief conversation with The New York Times on Thursday that the idea was discussed as a matter for political leaders to resolve rather than the military.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark did not respond to a request for comment. But in a public statement Thursday, posted on social media, she appeared to accept some of the details under discussion while rejecting others, including the idea of transferring ownership of any part of Greenland.

“We can negotiate on everything political; security, investments, economy. But we cannot negotiate on our sovereignty,” the statement said.

Trump gave almost no details of the agreement Wednesday evening in brief interviews

with reporters in Davos that followed it or in his public statements on social media.

Asked about the proposed agreement, Adm. Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the Italian chair of the NATO Military Committee, said at a press briefing Thursday that officials were “at the very early stage” of creating a framework for securing the Arctic and Greenland.

Grynkewich said that “We’ve done no planning yet” for the joint Arctic operations. He added: “We have not received political guidance to move out.”

There was a spreading sense of relief Thursday among European leaders that the escalating crisis over Greenland had been defused.

In a speech in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday, Trump ruled out using military force to take the island but raised the specter of imposing economic pain on allies if he didn’t get what he wanted.

Then, that evening, he abruptly announced he had reached a deal with Rutte, and he called off the tariffs he had planned to impose on imports from Denmark and many of the European countries that had risen to its defense over Greenland.

Some European leaders Thursday welcomed Trump’s announcement and expressed optimism that it would eventually result in a victory for Arctic security and NATO unity.

“We will protect Denmark, Greenland, the north, from the threat posed by Russia,” Friedrich Merz, chancellor of Germany, said in a speech at Davos on Thursday morning.

“We will uphold the principles on which the trans-Atlantic partnership is founded, namely sovereignty and territory,” Merz said. “We support talks between Denmark, Greenland, the United States on the basis of these principles.”

Trump’s rift with Europe is clear. Europe must decide what to do about it.

The depth of the rift between President Donald Trump and Europe was on full display Wednesday as Trump delivered remarks in Davos, Switzerland, airing his disdain for Europe’s immigration policies, its regulations and its strident unwillingness to give him Greenland, which he insists the United States must own.

For months, Europe has been looking to find a diplomatic answer to de-escalate the crisis. Hope for such an off ramp came late Wednesday, when Trump posted on Truth Social to announce that he and Mark Rutte, the NATO secretary-general, were working on a deal that could resolve the dispute over Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. He suggested that tariffs he had previously threatened to impose on European nations starting Feb. 1 would no longer kick in.

But neither he nor NATO provided any details of what that framework might look like, and there is no guarantee that such a deal will be finished. A member of the Danish parliament from Greenland called the deal into question in a social media post, saying it had created “total confusion.”

The dust had not yet settled Wednesday night. But one thing was clear. Trump’s comments throughout the day underscored just how little the United States and Europe — long the closest of allies — now have in common.

“While we may no longer be literally staring down the barrel of a gun on the trans-Atlantic relationship, we are still in a very rocky place,” said Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, a senior fellow at Bruegel, a research institute in Brussels.

“We are fundamentally at odds, in a way that can only reflect the very different values between most governments in Europe and the Trump administration,” he added.

European leaders, many of them shocked by Trump’s threats to take over the sovereign territory of an EU member and NATO ally, must still come together on what they might or should do if Trump changes his position again — and about the trans-Atlantic relationship more broadly.

On Thursday evening, leaders from across the 27-nation European Union were to gather in Brussels to discuss the perilous state of Europe’s relationship with the United States. They may have discussed the contours of the plan Trump alluded to in his social media post. They were sure to debate how they should approach

President Donald Trump is interviewed by Borge Brende at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026. this new and more hostile era, especially when Russia is still waging war in Ukraine.

Trump had announced over the weekend that he intended to apply levies of 10% on several European nations that have recently sent troops to Greenland as part of a NATO exercise. Although he has suspended those tariffs, it is unclear if that will last.

The mere possibility set off a panicked flurry. European ambassadors met for an emergency gathering Sunday to discuss the development, and many European leaders called Trump directly. Thursday’s summit was called in response to the threat.

The discussion was likely to touch on the state of play after the gathering in Davos, including Rutte’s discussion with Trump. Leaders were also to vet what to do next.

Even if the tariff issue is resolved, and even if the Greenland matter is resolved, Trump’s aggressive push for the island — and his language about Europe in recent days and weeks — have exposed a serious rupture forming between the partners that is far from healed. Europe is grappling with a changed reality, after decades in which it relied on a stable relationship with the United States for both trade and security.

“The shift in the international order is not only seismic — but it is permanent,” Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European

Commission, said Wednesday morning.

A senior European official, speaking anonymously to discuss sensitive diplomatic matters, appealed for a bit of calm, noting that Trump recently threatened to sanction any country that did business with Iran but has not done so until now.

The lesson, he suggested, was to keep Europe’s powder dry, not to overreact and escalate needlessly with a key ally, and push for diplomacy. To that end, he said the bloc should be ready to retaliate — to have leverage — but should not react unnecessarily.

The European Union already has a 93 billion-euro ($107 billion) list of U.S. goods prepared that it is poised to hit with retaliatory tariffs after Feb. 6. The list was finalized last year in response to Trump’s earlier trade war, and it will snap into place automatically unless EU officials take proactive moves to suspend it — making it a natural first step, should retaliation prove necessary.

Trump also had his usual harsh words for NATO during his speech Wednesday, asserting that NATO allies would not come to the aid of the United States if attacked.

But the only time Article V of the NATO treaty, the commitment to collective defense, was ever invoked was to aid the United States after it was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001.

NATO troops fought alongside U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan for a decade, and Denmark itself had more soldiers die per capita in Afghanistan than the United States did.

Still, at Davos, Rutte praised Trump for pushing member states to spend more on their own defense, which has strengthened the alliance.

Asked if he could imagine NATO without the United States, he said simply, “No.”

The United States “is by far the most powerful nation on earth, and the president of the United States is the leader of the free world,” he said, adding, “And you cannot envision NATO without the leader of the free world being an integral part of that organization.”

Rutte also touched on the most pressing security issue for Europeans, which is Russian aggression against Ukraine — right on the EU’s borders — and not an icy island in the Arctic.

“The risk here is that we focus, of course, on Greenland, because we have to make sure that issue gets solved in an amicable way,” Rutte said on a panel in Davos.

“Ukraine should be our No. 1 priority, and then we can discuss all the issues, including Greenland,” he said.

Uber faces growing pressure over sexual assault record

Uber faces mounting scrutiny across the country as lawmakers, investors and others move to hold the ridehailing giant accountable for a pervasive pattern of sexual violence during rides.

In California, a proposed ballot initiative would make ride-hailing companies legally responsible for sexual misconduct and assault against drivers and passengers. On Wall Street, the New York state comptroller is leading a shareholder push for Uber’s board to release a “transparency report” detailing its oversight of passenger safety.

And in Washington, Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., sent a letter to Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO, denouncing the company for prioritizing its “bottom line” over safety. Dingell said in an interview that she wanted to hold a congressional hearing and explore legislation on the issue.

All three actions cite New York Times reporting that found Uber received a report of sexual assault or sexual misconduct in the United States almost every eight minutes on average between 2017 and 2022 — far more than what the company has publicly disclosed. Uber executives have long been aware of the extensiveness of sexual violence, the Times found, yet they repeatedly prioritized expanding their business over introducing stronger protections.

The Times also found that Uber’s background checks approved drivers with many types of criminal convictions, and that the company allowed many drivers with records of complaints to keep driving — until passengers accused them of serious sexual as-

sault.

“There is no trade-off that should be acceptable to Uber, considering the devastating impact of sexual assault,” Dingell said in the letter.

Uber has said it is one of the safest ways to get around, with the vast majority of its trips in the United States — 99.9% — occurring without an incident of any kind.

Matt Kallman, an Uber spokesperson, said in a statement that the company had had “several constructive meetings” with Dingell and her staff and would “continue to answer any of their questions about our approach to safety.”

He described the California proposal as a “retaliatory measure” from the Consumer Attorneys of California, a lobbying group, in response to a separate ballot initiative from Uber that would limit how much automobile accident victims could receive via litigation for their medical expenses, and how much attorneys could earn in fees for those cases.

Kallman said Uber had been “exceptionally transparent about safety on our platform” and had released three safety reports that detailed serious incidents during rides, but he added that the company “will continue to engage with the comptroller’s office on their proposal ahead of our shareholder meeting later this year.”

This wave of attention compounds existing pressure on Uber, which already has faced a consumer fraud investigation by New Jersey’s attorney general and a separate inquiry by a House oversight subcommittee into its sexual assault safety protocols.

The company is also fighting more

than 3,000 lawsuits in federal and state courts from passengers who claim that they were sexually assaulted or harassed by Uber drivers.

Many of those lawsuits were consolidated in federal court, which allows for certain procedural matters from similar cases to be presented before the same judge while each case is tried individually. The first trial in those proceedings began in Phoenix this month.

Uber has argued that it is not responsible for the misconduct of its drivers, whom it considers independent contractors rather than employees.

The verdict could affect how the other cases play out. In a trial in California state court in September, the jury found that Uber

was not responsible for a sexual assault that a woman said she experienced during a 2016 ride.

The ballot initiative concerning sexual assault would make Uber liable for the misconduct of its drivers, regardless of their status as contractors. The measure was cleared this month for circulation; if it gains enough signatures to reach the state ballot in November and wins approval, it will reclassify ride-hailing companies as “common carriers” — the same legal category as taxis and trains — which would require them to protect passengers and warn them of known dangers.

The law also would require ride-hailing companies to publish monthly reports on sexual misconduct and sexual assaults, and notify passengers of a driver’s known risks before they accept a ride. And it would mandate fingerprinting for prospective drivers, a measure Uber has long lobbied against.

The Consumer Attorneys of California said it had raised more than $50 million for this and two other ballot measures as part of its fight against the Uber-backed initiative.

Kallman described Uber’s proposal as “seeking to limit the amount attorneys can collect from people injured in car crashes.”

“We believe Californians deserve a system that prioritizes victims over billboard lawyers,” he added.

Nicholas Rowley, a lawyer involved in the Consumer Attorneys of California effort, said Uber was trying to shift the narrative away from its sexual assault problem. “It’s a long time coming,” he said. “Uber’s known, and Uber’s done nothing, so it will be a righ-

Despite gains in treatment, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for nearly 3 in 10 fatalities — 916,000 — in 2023, according to a report published Wednesday by the American Heart Association.

It outnumbers deaths from the second- and third-leading causes — cancer and accidental injuries — combined.

The statistics are a sobering reminder that there is “a lot of work to do” when it comes to prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke, said Dr. Donald Lloyd-Jones, a professor of cardiology at Boston University and former president of the association, who was not involved in the new report.

Heart disease, which includes heart attack and heart failure, has been the leading killer of Americans for more than a century. Things started improving in the 1970s; less cigarette smoking, new medications for high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and interventions like stents and bypass surgery contributed to a major decline in deaths over decades.

But progress slowed around 2010, as mortality from types of heart disease other than heart attack increased and risk factors like obesity and Type 2 diabetes increased. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted access to care and increased the short- and long-term risks of heart attack, said Dr. Sadiya Khan, a preventive cardiologist at Northwestern University and vice chair of the committee that wrote the new report. Deaths from cardiovascular disease surged to 932,000 in 2021 and to 942,000 in 2022.

The new report examined numbers from 2023, the latest year for which data was available. Deaths from cardiovascular diseases totaled 916,000, including about 680,000 deaths from heart disease and 180,000 from stroke, Together, these two causes account for more than a quarter of all U.S. deaths.

Getting back to prepandemic levels is a win, Khan said. But the rates of conditions that drive cardiovascular diseases are on the rise. And while cigarette smoking is down to about 11% of U.S.

adults, e-cigarette use is increasing in adults, the report said.

Most notably, Lloyd-Jones said, the obesity epidemic “has worked its way through the population for the last 40 years,” increasing the risk factors for heart disease.

Close to half of all adults in the United States have high blood pressure, which is often driven by obesity. High blood pressure can lead to heart failure and contributes to the accumulation of plaque and hardening of the arteries, which can result in heart attack or stroke. But less than a quarter of people with high blood pressure have it well controlled through diet, exercise or medication, according to the report.

And about 14% of adults have diabetes, a majority of which is Type 2. An additional 37% have prediabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are slightly elevated but have not yet developed into diabetes.

An estimated 10 million people who have diabetes don’t know it, according to a national nutrition survey, and less than half of people with diabetes have their blood sugar well controlled. Chronically high blood sugar levels damage large and small arteries and contribute to heart attack, stroke, dementia and kidney disease.

Doctors’ understanding of cardiovascular disease — and therapies to treat it, including new drugs for obesity, diabetes, cholesterol and heart failure — has improved, Khan said. But more can be done to screen eligible patients for conditions like diabetes and kidney disease, and to educate people about ways to prevent cardiovascular disease, she said.

The new report also examined whether patients were receiving the best care. For example, the report found that few people with a certain kind of heart failure participate in cardiac rehabilitation, though it has been shown to improve quality of life.

Such data, Khan said, can help clarify the answer to an important question about the future of cardiovascular disease: “Are we at the inflection point where we’re going to continue to make progress or not?”

Cafeteros on the verge of LVSM title after another 5-set thriller

The Cafeteros of Yauco are just one victory away from dethroning the two-time defending champion Caribes of San Sebastián, after once again prevailing in five sets in the fourth game of the Men’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSM by its initials in Spanish) Finals on Wednesday night.

The scores were 25-18, 25-27, 25-15, 24-26 and 158, the third match of the series to go the distance, all won by Yauco. The Caribes’ only victory, in Game 3, came in four sets.

From the start, the intensity inside Raúl “Pipote” Oliveras Coliseum was palpable. After the match, Juan Felipe Castañeda, the Colombian import for the Cafeteros, described the experience as “an honor that fills me with emotion,” emphasizing that this first experience in Puerto Rico motivates him to continue growing “as a player and as a person.”

Regarding what Yauco needs to close out the series, he insisted that the key is maintaining unity.

“We have to work together, like the big family that we are,” Castañeda said. “Every player is attentive, willing to help. It’s about staying united and taking it one step at a time.”

With the series at 2-1 in favor of Yauco, the Caribes showed signs of life in the fourth set.

When it seemed the Cafeteros would close out the match, San Sebastián reacted with a 6-2 run, coming from behind after being down 17-21. The surge included an attack error by Diego Negrón from zone four that evened the score at 23.

The Caribes took set point at 24-23 with a block on Brandon Rattray and forced a fifth set with an attack by Corey Chavers from zone four for the 26-24 win.

But in the deciding fifth set, Yauco came out with renewed determination. They pulled ahead 6-3 with an attack by Castañeda and never looked back, reaching set point at 14-8 after two errors by the Caribes -- a missed serve by Howard García and an attack by Chavers that went out of bounds -- and closed out the match when San Sebastián failed to complete the final attack.

Afterward, Caribes middle blocker Anthony Negrón, acknowledged that the night wasn’t the best for his team. “Everything went right for them; they played very well,” he said. “We tried to hold on in that fourth set, but in the fifth we didn’t have the same precision and made too many errors.”

Regarding what San Sebastian must do to extend the series, Negrón was clear: “We have to defend our home court on Friday and keep fighting until the end.”

“This isn’t over yet,” he added. “It’s a best-of-seven series; they need one more win, we need more, but we’re going to keep defending like champions.”

The series continues on Friday when the Caribes host Yauco at Luis Aymat Cardona Coliseum at 8 p.m.
