ThefirstthingyounoticeaboutAdlaiE. StevensonHighSchoolisthescale.It doesn’tfeellikeahighschoolsomuch asawell-fundedcorporatecampusorasmall, exceptionallytidycity.Sprawledacross76acres ofsuburbanIllinoisprairie,itsbuildingsare connectedbyaglass-encasedwalkwayknown simplyas“TheLink.”Studentsmovethroughit withapurposethatseemslesslikethebell-driven shuffleofteenagersandmorelikethefocused transitofprofessionalsmovingbetween departments.Oneofitsnewestadditions,an extensiontotheEastBuildingcompletedin2019, boastsagreenroof,livingwalls,andsolarpanels, anambitiousattemptatanet-zeroenergy footprint.It’saphysicalstatementaboutthe future,amissioncastinconcreteandsteel.
ThisisDistrict125,asingle-schooldistrictthat functionsasaneducationaljuggernautin Lincolnshire,Illinois.Withanenrollmentof 4,614studentsforthe2023-2024schoolyear,it servesasthesolesecondaryinstitutionfora sprawling42-square-mileterritorycoveringallor partsof16differentcommunities.Itis,byalmost anymeasure,astunningsuccessstoryin Americanpubliceducation.It’stheonlypublic highschoolinIllinoistoearntheU.S. DepartmentofEducation’scovetedBlueRibbon AwardforExcellencefivetimes.ItsAdvanced Placementprogramisanationalpowerhouse, regularlyleadingtheMidwestinparticipationand rankinginthetopfiveworldwide.
ButtounderstandhowStevensonbecamethis paragonofacademicachievement,onemustfirst understanditsalmostcomicallydisastrous beginning—astorynotofgranddesign,butofa messydivorce,anemptybuilding,andacolossal shippingerror
AnUnfinishedBuildingandaMisplaced ShipmentofDesks
Theschoolthatexiststodaywasbornfrom disagreement.In1964,theformerEla VernonHighSchooldistrictwasfracturing, withthewesternportion,nowLakeZurich, breakingawaytoformitsowndistrict.This lefttheeasterncommunitieswithahalf-built secondschool,anamehonoringtheformer IllinoisgovernorAdlaiE.StevensonII,and verylittleelse.Whenitsdoorsopenedon September7,1965,toamodestcohortof467 studentsand31teachers,theplacewasa shell.Thelibraryhadnobooks,theathletic fieldswerenon-existent,andinalogistical blunderfortheages,mostoftheschool’s newfurniturehadbeenmistakenlyshippedto PrairieView,Texas,insteadofPrairieView, Illinois.
Itwasaninauspiciousstart,askeletonofa schooldroppedontotheflatlands.Foryears, itwasjustthat—aschool,servingits community Theturningpoint,themoment Stevensonbeganitstransformationfroma competentlocalhighschoolintoanational model,cameinthe1980s.Thedecadebegan withthepublicationof“ANationatRisk,”a landmarkreportthatsoundedthealarmona perceiveddeclineinAmericaneducation.It wasinthisclimateofnationalself-reflection thatanewprincipal,RichardDuFour, arrived.DuFourdidn’tjustmanagethe school;hebegantoarticulateaphilosophy.
