IntherollinghillsofGreaterAustin,Texas,theEanesIndependentSchoolDistrict (EISD)operatesnotmerelyasacollectionofschools,butasatestamenttoa community’senduringcommitmenttoeducationalsovereigntyandhighachievement. Thisisadistrictwhere“Exemplary”—thehighestpossibleaccountabilityratingfromtheState ofTexas—becamethenormforallnineofitsschoolsforconsecutiveyears,araredistinction, especiallyfora5Adistrict.Suchconsistentperformancedoesn’thappenbyaccident.It’sthe productofdeliberatechoices,sustainedeffort,andadeeplyembeddedbeliefinthepotentialof everystudent.
ThestoryofEanesISDbeginswithaquintessentialTexanspiritofindependence.Itsroots tracebackto1872andahumblelogcabinschoolonthepropertyofRobertEanes. By1874,aone-roomframestructureonlanddonatedbyWilliamandSophiaTeagueserved thecommunity.Fastforwardto1957,awatershedyear:TravisCountyofficialsdecidedto dissolvethecounty’sruralschoolsystem.TheresidentsoftheEanescommunityfaceda starkchoice–mergewiththelargerAustinIndependentSchoolDistrictorcharttheir owncourse.OnApril12,1958,theyvoteddecisivelyforautonomy,establishingthe EanesIndependentSchoolDistrict.Thisfoundationalactofself-determinationcontinuesto shapethedistrict’sethos.
Today,EISDservesapproximately7,700to7,900studentsacrosssixelementaryschools,two middleschools,andonehighschool–WestlakeHigh.ItencompassestheentiretyofWestLake Hills,amajorityofRollingwood,andsignificantportionsofAustin,coveringnearly12square milesoflandwithinthecity.Thisgeographicalfootprint,whilerelativelysmall,carriesa disproportionateweightintermsofeducationalreputation.
Guidingthiscomplexandhigh-achievingenterpriseisSuperintendentDr.JeffArnett NamedtothetoppostinJanuary2022afterservingasDeputySuperintendentsince2016,Dr Arnettisnostrangertothedistrict’sintricateworkings.Asdeputy,hewaspivotalinoverseeing districtleadership,operations,andcriticalcommitteeslike“EnvisionEanes”andtheDistrict LeadershipTeam.Hisleadershiphasbeeninstrumentalindevelopingandimplementinga cohesivestrategicplanthatalignsalldepartmentsandoperationstowardcommongoals.
Dr.Arnett’spathtoEanesreflectsadiverseand richbackgroundincommunicationsand education.BeforehistenureinEanes,hespent eightyearsinBarrington220,asuburban Chicagoschooldistrict,servingasassistant superintendentofoperations&outreachandas chiefcommunicationsofficer.Priortothat,he honedhiscommunicationandpublic engagementskillsasthedirectorof communications,education&publicprograms fortheNationalBaseballHallofFameand MuseuminCooperstown,N.Y.Hispublic educationcareerbeganinSt.Louis,Missouri, whereheservedvariousdistrictsasadirector ofcommunications,directorofschooland communityrelations,and,importantly,asa classroomteacher–anexperiencethatgrounds hisadministrativeperspective.

The2023-24NationalMeritScholarshipProgram saw35EanesstudentsnamedFinalistsand56as CommendedScholars,alongsidenumerous recognitionsintheNationalHispanic,African American,andIndigenousScholarprograms.
TheultimateoutcomeofaK-12educationisoften measuredbypost-secondarypathways.Forthe Classof2024,99%gainedcollegeacceptance.A remarkable88.5%plannedtoattendafour-year college,withgraduatesheadingto169different collegesanduniversitiesacross42statesand4 countries.Notably,atleastoneseniorfromthis classreceivedanacceptanceletterfromeveryone oftheeightIvyLeagueinstitutions.These statisticspaintaclearpictureofadistrict successfullypreparingitsstudentsforhigher educationatthemostcompetitivelevels.Beyond academics,thissameclasscollectivelycompleted nearly30,000hoursofcommunityservice, indicatingafocusonholisticdevelopment.
Underpinningthissuccessisasignificant investmentinitseducatorsandlearning environment.Thestudent-teacherratiostandsata favorable13.16to1.TeachersinEanesbringan averageof11.6yearsofexperience,with46.1% having11ormoreyearsintheclassroom.
