STUDENT’S FIRST TIME ON SITE

Course Outline

Sustainable Urban Recycling

During the autumn term of 2022, students at Lund University, School of Architecture participated in the advanced course ‘Sustainable Urban Recycling’ (ASBN 02) and its complementary theory course ‘Urban Recycling - Theory and Methods’ (ASBN 06), focused on redevelopment of the brownfield area of Gåsebäck.

The aim of the design course was to develop the students’ skills in designing strategic visions for sustainable built environments through the process of urban transformation. The theme was explored throughout the semester in seminars, guest lectures, and project tutorials with the goal that each student presents a site specific proposal for sustainable transformation of the Gåsebäck area of Helsingborg, Sweden.

Throughout the studio-based course, the students were encouraged to engage in exploring various aspects of sustainability, identifying site problems and potentials, and suggesting opportunities for refining urban components. They were guided to find their own meaning in the terms ‘recycling’ and ‘sustainability’ when re-designing the area in Helsingborg. The design intention was to integrate a comprehensive strategy, design guidelines and tools for transforming the area into a sustainable urban structure that promotes attractiveness for the everyday life of both visitors and local residents.

The design process was separated into several parts - analysis, strategy and individual design - combing both the group and individual work of the students.

The design studio resulted in 23 unique projects in which students challenged conventional ideas and tools of sustainability, preparing and supporting the process of urban transformation in Gåsebäck. The following pages are a summary of the design site and include a brief presentation of each of the students design proposals.

Design Site

Helsingborg, Sweden

In 2022 and for the third time, the design studio Sustainable Urban Recycling took on the design site in Helsingborg: Gäsebäck, an industrial area to the south of the city centre that is part of the municipality’s ambitous plans for urban densification and renewal of underutilised areas. The site is hemmed in on its sides by major infrastructure such as the E4 motorway to the east and north, and the harbour area to the west, with the national railway line between Malmö and Gothenburg dividing the area in two. With a rich history as an area of production and industrial activity, the site in many ways lived in the shadow of more prominent areas to the north. But in recent years there has been a resurgence of social and cultural activity, including a thriving graffiti/art scene, which has brought renewed interest in the area and could be a generator for further change.

Due to its strategic location, the site presents many opportunities to better connect with its surroundings, introduce a mix of uses and activities including residential and business enterprise, and the necessary public realm improvements to facilitate this change. But most importantly, there is a possibility to address many of the challenges experienced today, such as excessive hard surfaces and car dominanated streetscapes, through innovative sustainable designs from an environmental, social and economic perspective.

NÄRLUNDA

The initial design task this year was to analyze the place and develop a sustainable vision and strategy for how Gåsebäck will develop over time. The work started with a study trip to the area in order to get an understanding of its qualities and its history. After working in groups to form more overarching strategies for the area’s future development, the students worked individually on a strategic plan for the area, including a detailed design.

Critical questions asked were: How can we break down existing barriers and create new passages, new structures of mobility and new patterns of movement? What elements should be preserved or restored in a new context? How can the reclamation of the the Gåsebäck area generate attractive places to live for many different types of people in different phases of their lives?

The aim of the final Individual phase of the Design Project is to tell a holistic story and design a sensitive, detailed plan for development of the chosen design site.

The constraints and potentials that were identified in the previous stages of analysis and strategy are now to be turned into physical spaces, bound by real dimensions and sitespecific performances. Thus, the students’ visions for Gåsebäck’s urban transformation naturally came to be concrete proposals as a result of the extensive research base from which they could be pulled up.

The reader of this booklet is invited to enduldge into the following pages in order to witness a brief collection of the final projects. It is our hope that all of the students tireless efforts and energy can inspire one as much as it has inspired us throughout the semester.

UNDERPASS BENEATH THE RAILWAY

The Available City

Assar Swanberg, Sweden

PERSPECTIVE OF NEW TUNNEL

“Connected, affordable, space moving Helsingborg forwards”

An available city is a diverse city that needs to make space for various uses, from good quality dwellings to noisy businesses. Today Gåsebäck only makes space for the latter part, is cut off the rest of Helsingborg and is not a friendly environment for humans. But with its central location it has the possibility to be transformed into a living, diverse area that is easily accessible for all, serves as the city’s link to future harbor transformations and can help take Helsingborg towards a sustainable future.

To achieve this Gåsebäck would be developed under three themes; space, accessibility and affordable. Gåsebäck offers a lot of space, both undeveloped and developed, that can be used for more than what it currently offers. The quality of public spaces will be improved with human scale and greenery in focus. The physical accessibility within and to the area is key to make is available. New connections to Gåsebäck should

be established and existing ones made more inviting. Within the area a new tunnel under the railway that allows for biking is one of the keys to transforming Gåsebäck.

All this new development has the risk of severely gentrifying the area, today space here is affordable - an asset of Gåsebäck that should not be lost. Plots should be divided into smaller units that are not allowed to merge, opening up the possibility for local ownership and a greater diversity within the built environment. The density of Gåsebäck needs to be increased to create a lively area. New development should take place in empty lots first and the existing buildings extended and adopted. Accomplishing this would create an available Gåsebäck filled with mixed urban uses and connected with a network of good public space.

Growing up in GREEN

“Let’s go there.”

“Let’s stay there.”

“Let’s play there.”

“Let’s live there.”

“Let us explore there!”

GÅSEBÄCK is a place with many historical buildings and a musical and artistic character. The strategy of this design is to make GÅSEBÄCK an artistic city and a child-friendly city. My vision is “growing up in green” not only for children, but also for plants and animals. The ecological sustainability of insects is growing together.

The first step was to increase the connection between the east and west areas of GÅSEBÄCK, so a landscape bridge and an architectural corridor were added. The aim of sustainability was achieved by adding greenery on both sides of the street and practical permeable paving in the parking areas. The whole site has several shallow water areas where children can play safely in the water, eventually forming a complete blue-green system for storing and transporting water to the sea, as well as several pocket parks and rain gardens, a central square, an entrance park and a sports park, with different

private or public spaces for the public to choose from, giving people plenty of landscape space for recreation and relaxation. It is also ecologically and socially sustainable.

The addition of different functional areas, which are adapted to the needs of different age groups, such as a kindergarten, a music studio, a library, etc., allows different groups of people to find spiritual satisfaction in GÅSEBÄCK. The height of the buildings is controlled, taking into account the microclimatic impact on the environment and creating a beautiful city skyline.

The new residential area has a semiprivate courtyard in which residents can grow vegetables, play, etc. and have their own private space.

The aim of the design is to make GÅSEBÄCK a highly accessible and attractive city where people can stay, live and have fun, making GÅSEBÄCK a sustainable city in all aspects.

MAP OF USES

Making the area accessible will increase the flow of people, while prioritizing pedestrians and bikes over cars will make it safer. Designing inclusive paths that connect Gåsebäck and the city centre, but at the same time create a loophole within the area, will make it easier to stay in.

But changes take time and time requires transformation, so it’s important to prioritise fast changes economy, ensuring comfort.

CONCEPTUAL AXONOMETRY

“A concentrated and walkable city that focuses on people and their well-being”

- Interchange: of culture and knowledge between the people by implementing diverse functions next to each other. Through the implementation of a new block structure in the urban fabric with collective courtyards in the middle of these blocks. This way interchange will happen naturally between people with similar interests. Different active street typologies surrounding these will also be added.

- Interaction: between different age groups and different backgrounds to have a city that is alive and creates communities. This will be done with new multifunctional hybrid blocks. Inside-out spaces that connect the people, such as balconies that look out onto lively streets and fl exible playgrounds will also be added. Interaction will also be created between the native fl ora and fauna of Skane with greenery in streets as well as parks and the re-use of the old tracks to regenerate a biodiverse environment.

- Interconnected: by adding new street patterns and changing the currents street typologies to new, more efficient and more pedestrian friendly streets, Gäseback will be more connected and accessible to all surrounding areas. Pedestrian and bike friendly bridges will connect the city centre, the new harbour, and existing pathways to a new Gäseback. Pedestrians will be able to walk from one side to the other through green streets and corridors.

Through the activation of the streets and public spaces, this will encourage grassroot engagement and activate the inside of the buildings as well as create an overall better environment for the well being of the people that live there.

MASTERPLAN

“ Gåsebäck

as a center of variety inside and outside ”

Today, Gåsebäck is dominated by industrial use and cultural offerings. As a result, the area is not integrated into the surrounding urban context.

The goal of my design is to make Gåsebäck accessible and to create a place that can accommodate a variety of interest groups. Due to the changing demands for use of inner-city spaces, mine foresees to create a place for people and their different interests. Since the area is spread over a large area, character areas are to be created that are dedicated to different themes and characters inside and outside. I have based these themes and their location on existing functions and would like to expand and specify them.

Due to the current industrial use of the area, I decided to combine old buildings and industrial complexes with new development in order to preserve the character of the area. To connect the individual character areas and to create

a central connection between them, a promenade will be created.

To achieve the aspect of sustainability, the area will be characterized by numerous green spaces and connections with a high density of plantings. This is not only a key factor sustainability, it also provides residents and visitors with spaces to relax in a natural environment.

Go (åse) bäck - Go (åse) forward

VISUALISATION

“From a concrete car prioritized area to a green and diversity place for all ”

The title of my work is a word game: Go (åse) bäck to Go (åse) forward, it means that the site will change, and it will start to look forward instead to look back, as Gåsebäck does today. Now the situation in the site project is about a concrete car prioritized area, it looks like a disconnected island with wide streets lacking of greenery and lighting.

My vision has many points. The first one is about keeping the identity of the district, by respecting industrial features and materials but also reusing historical buildings via a new function.

The second point is about being an inclusive area, the site will be a place for children and families, young people, elderly people, adults, where there will be activities for all, no one excluded.

Another point is about connection, either within the district or with the external contest via under paths, by improving the existing ones with

lighting and greenery and adding new ones. The project is also about redesign the streets: indeed, I would like to keep cars streets only if it’s strictly necessary, otherwise the streets will be only for pedestrians and bikes.

About parking, really overestimated in the site, they will be parks and green areas with the aim of decementify, reducing land use.

The site will be a sustainable district with parks, green areas, greenery, stormwater collecting system such as bio-pods due to phytodepuration. Sustainable district also thanks to vertical greenery on the bridge’s pylons reducing smog via absorption of carbon dioxide.

MASTERPLAN

Gåsebäck, the Cultural Crossroad

NEW ARTSPACE IN PRESERVED BUILDING

“Closer to art, nature and eachother”

The aim of the vision for Gåseback is to create a new living and dynamic part of Helsingborg, where different opinions, cultures and knowledge can be met together and shared. The existing culture life has a great potential to develop and create space where people of different ages and backgrounds can find a safe space to explore and reconnect with the city, history and nature. I wanted to create an inclusive, go to place for local people and visitors to freely develop many different skills, talents and hobbies.

The reason to create such a place is the need to bring life back to Gåseback and strengthen the connections with the rest of the Helsingborg city. There are many things Gåsebäck can offer, with creating places that afford different types of activities and are inviting for different groups of people, the quality of this place can be fully developed.

To archive the vision of Cultural crossroad I am working with strategies :

preserve/reuse/adapt/refine/blue-green.

By preserving existing organizations and reusing the historical valuable buildings the local spirit can be still alive. Many of the existing buildings can be adapted in different ways to serve new purpose, when the buildings cannot be preserved there is still possibility to reuse the material for new structures.

I am refining existing street structure to emphasize to connections, make structure of streets where it is easy to orientate and creating urban blocks to densify the urban structure of the site.

The densification provide the site with new places for housing, public activities and green infrastructure.

Designing the urban farming areas is helping with implementing more treen and also spreading knowledge of sustainable living. Urban farming serves education purposes but also provide working possibilities for homeless people and fresh resources for peoples kitchen.

CONNECT GÅSEBÄCK

“City without connections does not work!”

Project “Connect with Gåsebäck” shows a new way of looking at potentials of Gåsebäck district and Helsingborg.

First of all, design focuses on connecting the area with a whole city. It is achieved by creating new roads, tunnels and bridges along borders of the district. Beside connecting area with pedestrian/car/bike traffic, the design shows how to connect Gåsebäck with blue and green infrastructure of the city. The area, was divided into two smaller neighbourhoods which are connected by linear park. The linear park also connects the coast with green terrains in the east of Helsingborg.

To make the park connection possible the train trucks were put into the tunnel. Thanks to it, the area became much safer and the barrier was taken away. Now, pedestrians can freely move around the district! In the design the new train station is proposed. It’s localization is in the middle of the

area, in the park. This place works perfectly for both sides of the district.

When it comes to daily life, the area is designed to support neighbourhoods interactions and to create a new community. Three different types of housings were designed. Each one of them answers to different needs and uses. Beside housings, the variety of public spaces were designed. The public plazas, squares and pocket parks will help to connect and interact with neighbours. Area was divided into to main districts and ten smaller neighbourhoods. Each of district fits into 500 meter distance, thanks to it, the new Gaseback becomes 5 minute city. Each of neighbourhoods has it’s own neighbour pavilion for open use. Each of pavilions is surrounded by allotment gardens for rent.

DETAILED PLAN

“Connecting places with places - parks connect the city”

Future Helsingborg will need a bigger inner city if the city is to continue to grow.

In order to manage the conditions that climate change will lead to, more rain and heat, this future Helsingborg needs to be green and blue.

Bäcke city is a proposal for a green, blue and dense expansion of Helsingborgs inner city.

An inner city district needs to be connected to the surrounding city. It also needs high quality public spaces which people want to go to and stay at. Bäckebacken does both. It’s a big park formed like a hill which connects Gåsebäck and Husarområdet.

The premise of the proposal is that greenery is not an obstacle to urban city life, a gap in the city, but something that contributes to urbanity. Bäckebacken should function as a generator for public

life, a destination, which makes people come to Bäcke city. In the summer it is a large spacious park with a nice view and in the winter it can work as a sledding hill.

Bäcke city is connected with an upcoming future development at the harbour via another big park which is made possible when the train track to the harbour is removed.

When the city is connected with public places, not just roads, tunnels and bridges, it becomes truly connected.

VISUALIZATION OVER A NEIGHBOURHOOD STREET

“By bringing down production to a local scale, Gåsebäck will lead Helsingborg forward into a more sustainable future”

Even though Gåsebäck is only a 15-minute promenade away from the city centre of Helsingborg, it still serves as a low-density car-dominated concrete island stuck in between highways and rail tracks and has an industrial heritage built to be dependent on fossil fuels. But during the last few years, something has happened – Local culture has thrived from a bottomup perspective where the people of Helsingborg have created some unique from an otherwise forgotten place. Musicians looking for a cheap studio, graffiti artists looking for a place to practice art. The list goes on.

By embracing the strength that lies in the unique spirit of Gåsebäck the aim is to use this as a stepstone, with a focus on attracting the entrepreneurial mindset who is eager to test new sustainable ideas by bringing down production to a local scale. By establishing spaces for start-ups, flexible workshops, and maker

spaces the aim is to transform Gåsebäck into an area where the sustainable lifestyle is the obvious choice.

By implementing the three strategies ADAPT, CONNECT & DENSIFY in different phases, the aim is to make Gåsebäck an affordable and integrated part of Helsingborg where the whole city feels a sense of belonging. By establishing opportunities for people to create their own start-up businesses with a focus on up- and recycling and integrating this into the everyday life of Gåsebäck, Helsingborg will lead the way forward into a more sustainable future.

The New Green & Blue District

Next stop, Gåsebäck. A destination full of recreation.”

This project addresses three main strategies: implementing new green & blue structures, adding meeting places for cultural purposes and existing activities and finally, developing connectivity in the area with focus on public transport and walkability within Gåsebäck.

This project empathizes the importance of different green and blue typologies like for instance different parks, like a wetland- and an urban park. The parks can work as a multifunctional space that can affect both social aspects in terms of recreation, but also handling rainwater and increasing biodiversity. Another aspect of this project is to create spaces and activities with both educational and creative purposes, for instance a Naturum could work as an education center where learning about climate change can take place or create

an art pavilion, a platform where artists can exhibit their work. To increase the green mobility I choose to focus on pedestrian and bicycle- friendly neighborhoods to affect a sustainable lifestyle. Therefore, should the majority of the area be car free, and have a well developed public transport by adding a train- and bus stop in the heart of Gåsebäck.

Altogether the aim and focus with this project is to create a place for people to both work, live and visit and the everyday life should be easy and focusing on the wellbeing. This should be a place for people to develop themselves and their passions but with care for future generations of Gåsebäck.

WELCOME AT THE GÅSEBÄCK STATION

LONGITUDINAL SECTION

“The most attended places in the cities are the intersections of multiple modes of transport.”

Gåsebäck is a very abandoned postindustrial district of Helsingborg, isolated by high traffic regional roads and train track from other areas of the city. The district neighbours directly with the harbour. It is divided into two parts, now barely connected. Scarcity of vegetation, ownership structure resulting in dividing land into large, empty fenced plots makes it hard to encourage the settlement in this area.

Gåsebäck has however huge potential to develop. It is located in intersection spot of multiple modes of transport, in proximity to the university and city centre. It has strong identity derived from its past and recognizable in historical buildings. It is famous for its artistic activity of musicians and graffiti painters.

Arrangement of the communication hub including the train station, bus stop on the intersection of the pedestrian promenade is the measure

to create a destination place and launch development of associated services (commercial facilities and gastronomy).

Enhancing and extending cultural functions using the historical buildings (Jutan, Husar Regiment Kaserne) and green areas encourages the visitors to choose Gåsebäck for their leisure time. The new amphiteatre in the courtyard of military building offers space for students gatherings.

Open for diverse groups of users, Gåsebäck will offer a wide variety of accommodation proposals: student houses, rental and ownership appartments, social dwellings, workshops with residential space, multi- and one family houses.

The district of Gåsebäck has a chance to fill significant sustainable goals and turn into a vivid part of the city.

Gåsebäck - The Green and Blue Vessel

“The main idea is to connect the park in the east with the ocean in the west with a green and blue connection.”

Gåsebäck is an area, which attracts people from different age group and creative mindsets. The aim of this vision is to enhance this tradition, make it a place for everybody while making it more accessible and attractive to its surroundings. This is implemented through the green corridor going alongside the existing railway. This strengthens the community as well as the mental health. There will also be a blue corridor as a conter player to the green, this will also bea generatorfor the area

In the middle of Gåsebäck is a multifunctional space, which can be used with different activities during the season. The aim of this is to attract people all year around and give them something to look forward, when coming to Gåsebäck.

The multifunctional space is also part of the activity path within the green corridor. There can be found different activities, such as playground, volleyball field etc..

The old train tracks, which lead to the seaside are going to be replaced with a steam. The steam connects in the northeast with the existing steam and in the west with the ocean. This give people an opportunity to sit by the water in the city. The steam allows a pleasant connection to the south of Helsingborg. One side will be the urban waterfront and the other the green waterfront, so that everybody can chooose, what they prefer more.

Visualization A

The green goes back

“By focusing on the green as a main tool to introduce new, healthy and welcoming urban spaces that both connect to the surrounding and integrate with existing buildings, Gåsebäck can thrive with its potential and the help of green.”

With a strong identity, a thriving culture and a location close to the sea and the central parts of Helsingborg, Gåsebäck has a great potential to give something back to the rest of the city. But today, Gåsebäck is disconnected and stuck in the structure of industrial use with a low density and a lack of greenery. Looking into the future, the need for green in our cities is very present.

So what if the green can be the needed tool to both strengthen and connect Gåsebäck so the rest of Helsingborg can be invited and take part of what the area has to offer? The aim is to create a Gåsebäck that is green, connected and at the same time captures the existing identity and by that invites and offers people something of great value.

Two main green-blue corridors are introduced alongside with a variation of green and blue in the overall area such as parks, flowersfields, green roofs and courtyards. The area is densified to

create a stronger relationship between building and street, still preserving a lot of the existing buildings. A public spine connects and links new and existing public spaces to ensure a rich and active public life in the green.

“ Place where you can slow down from the daily routine as well as possibilities to be creative and get into action!”

In Helsingborg that is situated so close to many other cities to visit or go to daily, it also needs a place to attract people and for them to stop for a while. After analysing the different sides of the project site I tried to work more with the potentials and challenges. Not to erase the threats, but use for good. Opportunities to be in different motions addressing either sounds, speed, specific activities or microclimate.

Gåsebäck has it’s own existing identity, but with improvements on the site there would be places where you could slow down from the daily routine as well as possibilities to be creative and get into action. Everyone likes to go to a concert, festival or market, but would be annoyed to live next to it. So in Gåsebäck there is a balance to have a calm place to live and a busy place to be entertained.

With the vision of the site there are 3 main goals that are implemented in all Gåsebäck, but there would be different characters with in it. So Gåsebäck would be more accessible and safe, climate resilient and welcoming area.

In an area closer to the highway and the new train stop people could wonder in shops, work in the office till 5, but afterwards get into some craft studio or attend a concert in the main square. But nearer to the sea and within the streets of the historical brick buildings, people could pass a bookstore, walk their dog in the park and have a quiet fika on their apartment balcony.

The new train stop at Gåsebäck would be one of the biggest activation points for the area. So not only creating connections to the surroundings outside Gåsebäck, but also bringing people inside, either for business, daily activities or to visit.

The first impression about Gåsebäck is that it’s a Dead area, empty of people, Similar, Uniform, Isolated and Inaccessible. By this project I wanted to create The opposite and what I find Gåsebäck lacks the most ”Activity, Diversity and accessible Destination” which makes it a city full of people.

For the traffic and connections, i removed the train track going to the harbor and replaced it with a water collecting canal that leads to the water surface, added a new train station at the entrance of gaseback along with new 5 bus stops and tunnel to the neighbouring area. the cars are only allowed on the bridge and outside surrounding streets and parking areas were distributed in site entrances, pedestrian and cyclists are allowed in interior roads also, opened up the main road to the water surface for pedestrian and cyclists.

For buildings and blocks Strategy ,i extended and connected existing buildings to create semi courtyard system for private outdoor activities as well as preventing excessive wind speed, by closing the narrow gaps In between buildings.

For the green and blue, i created a park in the center as it’s the main meeting point of the (bridge, underground tunnel, under bridge and the train track), that integrates with this intersection, less horisantal density in the center to open up the crowded area, different activities for a rich user experience in this road (outdoor markets, concerts and art exhibitions)..

VISION

“Gåsebäck is a place for everyone. People feel comfortable and welcome!”

SECTION OF THE PROMENADE STREET

Gåsebäck is a place with rich industrial culture and character that offers a lot of activities for young people. It also has historical value and tells a story that goes for the whole of Helsingborg.

In my design Gåsebäck is a place for everyone, regardless of age, gender, or origin. People feel comfortable and welcome. There are easy and accessible paths for pedestrians and cyclists to enter Gåsebäck and move around. I designed a tunnel and bridges for pedestrians.

Gåsebäck is now a safe and green place in Helsingborg for people to enjoy culture and get in touch with friends. The area was mostly used by adults for work and there was no life there and it was not welcoming for other groups such as elderly or children at all. By creating spaces for different cultural activities and connecting Gåsebäck to the rest of Helsingborg I tried to invite quite more inhabitants to spend time there, live there and even take part in the different communities. I proposed a

more cultural, more vibrant and greener Gåsebäck.

Valuable historical buildings are preserved and used for cultural and recreational activities. In this way I saved the spirit of the place and gave these already valuable buildings a new cultural value.

I also put more green walls to protect the area from noise pollution created by train. I even used a bridge to connect the main path to the sea and created a connection between green and blue. The residential blocks are formed in a way to create nice environments in the courtyards and be comfortable spaces for residents.

The promenade street in the middle is designed for pedestrians and cyclists with active open spaces.

THE RING of art and nature

MASTER PLAN

“A RING that will allow the creation of ecosystems and will link animals, insects and people through an interaction between art and nature”

Nowadays Gåsebäck has artistic and cultural activities that are hidden in the industrial atmosphere of the place. As a result, I want to take those art spaces as an opportunity to activate the place and generate a new identity. As well, this industrial atmosphere has been privatizing the few green areas with fences, which has made a disconnected Gåsebäck of the surroundings and people.

That is how my principal objective is to keep the current art and nature through a ring connection, that will link the other districts through the green areas. This will allow the creation of new ecosystems for the animals and will attract new users with the art activities.

To get this, I propose to identify the main pedestrian paths that will link and lead to big parks, giving the pedestrians a meeting with the blue and green resources. Those paths also link the new parks with 2 existing parks in the

surroundings. These would be through a RING connection that allows insects, animals, and people to be part of the ecosystem. This Ring is an interactive corridor that integrates greenery and free art activities. In addition, it is connected to intermediate paths through a chain of pocket parks with different typologies of vegetation.

Archipelago

ENTRY PERSPECTIVE

“Adapting barriers into a walkable network.”

Archipelago expands the creative culture of Gåsebäck by approaching it as a series of connecting neighborhoods within a sea of urban green and public networks. Currently Gåsebäck feels separated from the city, because it is designed for industry, not people. Strengthening the public network with attractive public buildings provides a human-scale, which re-introduces the missing sense of activity and community.

By adapting mental and physical barriers, like the existing overpass and railway tracks, into moments within this network, Archipelago is able to connect Gåsebäck to its diverse surroundings. In expanding upon existing social and ecological potentials, Archipelago creates spaces where people can interact at a variety of levels. This encourages activity for Gåsebäck’s creative atmosphere, and serves as a valuable resource for the larger community of Helsingborg.

Archipelago focuses on three strategies; Connectivity, Diversity and Creativity. Connectivity allows the neighborhood islands of Gåsebäck to merge with their context, while also transforming social and ecological barriers into a walkable network of places. Diversity is present in the variety of buildings and public spaces; from private courtyards and forests to public squares and shores. Finally, creativity strengthens the community by establishing adaptable squares, fields, and streets where people can gather and share activities.

VERDANT UTOPIA

Boycheva, Canada

verdant: “green with growing plants”

utopia: “an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect”

A verdant utopia is the idea of a growing green place that has a whimsical and perfect feeling throughout. Gåsebäck has the potential to become a verdant utopia through time. A verdant utopia creates the opportunities to encourage people to use outdoor spaces for different activities while living near a five minute city experience. There are districts of culture, businesses, parks, pedestrian areas, bike lanes and residences of different typologies all near green typologies. Through green corridors the site connects to itself, the water and all of Helsingborg.

The challenge of encouraging people to live in Gåsebäck can be tackled by promoting the existing and new culture and making it a comfortable place for everyone. I am proposing the strategies of green ecology, connections and culture in order to achieve the benefits of a walkable neighborhood and focus on the benefits of reducing CO2, creatiing water drainage options, making the areas livable, and

encouraging biodiversity through greenery. Implementing different solutions such as green typologies, green corridors and cultural hubs will create a sustainable, vibrant environment for humans, plants and wildlife. Phasing and site growth is an important part of a verdant utopia when it comes to species, sustainability and slowly encouraging people to use spaces overtime. As the future becomes unclear, a verdant utopia is a clear goal to achieve for Gåsebäck and will allow a sustainable community for generations to come.

Green Connectors Gåsebäck

MASTERPLAN

“Gåsebäck should provide a quick access to greenery for everyone in the future!”

When I visited Gåsebäck, the first thing I noticed was the lack of greenery there and the amount of barriers. The whole area was just car-orientated. Therefore, I had a vision of Gåsebäck where a lot of different types of green spaces are existing and where you don´t have to think about how you reach different parts of the area. The main-greenery will be the „Industrial Park“.

I want to add three main connectors which connect the area to the rest of Helsingborg and also within Gåsebäck. The first one is a green corridor for pedestrians only which connects the east part to the west.

The second connector is a fast bike lane which is located on the old tracks to the harbour. It connects the south to the north of Helsingborg and should motivate people to use their bikes instead of cars.

The third connector is a dike next to the still existing tracks to get a better overview for pedestrians and bikes and to keep away the noise of the trains.

By adding those connectors and greenery and support the existing culture the whole area will be activated. Instead of a just car-orientated Gåsebäck we have an area for everyone!

Reuse & Recirculate

“The keys to sustainable urban recycling: connect to, integrate and preserve, both context, history and built heritage.”

Reuse: Making use of already hardened surface instead of using agricultural land. Resources are finite and buildings have a lot of energy invested in them. We need to take advantage of what’s already built. As a bonus comes heritage and diversity. Gåsebäck is already inhibited by many grassroot movements, engagement, workplaces and cultural initiatives, they should be cared for and nourished.

Recirculate: By bringing the water into Gåsebäck one would get character, a natural path for greenery and a possibility for managing stormwater as in the Sunken Square. By creating a few new roads one can concentrate heavy traffic in a loop connected to the E4 and free other space from traffic. Traffic to the ferries can also be moved to Bredgatan for a better basis for when the area west of Bredgatan is to be developed. Today Gåsebäck is an island in the city blocking many natural paths.

By connecting the surroundings and existing paths one can increase the flows of people and start to heal the south of Helsingborg.

With focus on the blue and green, adding a new tunnel into the area and creating the Sunken Square as a new connector in the city, Gåsebäck can get its rectification. Gåsebäck can start to grow towards its new role as a sustainable mixed use area for people who appreciate a modern and central area with a lot of heritage, parks, culture and workplaces.
