Bankers Trust opened in Omaha in 2008 as a loan production office and opened its first full-service banking location in the market in February 2025. Caring for People Services Celebrates National Caregiver Day on Feb. 20

National Caregiver Day, observed on the third Thursday of February, honors caregivers for their essential support to families and communities.

This special day celebrates caregivers and highlights the essential work they perform daily. It also raises awareness of the unique challenges they encounter, and the resources needed to support them. Caregivers may be dedicated family members or skilled professionals from an agency.

Caring for People Services supports and recognizes caregivers throughout the year in several meaningful ways. Caregivers are nominated (monthly, quarterly and yearly) by their Care Managers or direct supervisors for various monthly awards, including the Dignity Award and Humanity Award. Caregivers and their clients are also invited to attend monthly events, including bowling, bingo, holiday parties and even more events to come in 2026. With their Caring Kind Fund, they provide financial support to Caregivers in time of unusual need.

Caregivers are required to attend quarterly training throughout the year, providing them with additional resources to keep themselves and the client safe. Metropolitan Community College Hosts American Red Cross Blood Drive

Metropolitan Community College will host the MCC Wellness Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday, March 31, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the South Omaha Campus Center for Advanced Manufacturing, Room 120 Conference Center.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood, and currently blood product distribution to hospitals is outpacing incoming donations. Recognized as 2026 National WBC of Excellence Graduate

The GROW Nebraska Women’s Business Center has been recognized as a 2026 graduate of the National WBC of Excellence program offered by the Association of Women’s Business Centers (AWBC).

The primary objective of the National Women’s Business Center of Excellence designation is to recognize organizations that demonstrate commitment and efficacy of the mission, vision, and values of their Women’s Business Center, giving the greatest outcomes for womenowned businesses.

“I am beyond proud of our 2026 Women’s Business Center of Excellence graduates! Their hard work, focus, and passion for serving women entrepreneurs shine through in every aspect of their operations,” says Klassi Duncan, AWBC Board Chair and Vice President of the Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation (CEI) at the Urban League of Louisiana. “Their dedication to excellence will continue to uplift and accelerate the success of women-owned businesses nationwide.”

Through six milestone assignments, participating Women’s Business Centers partnered with peers in their cohort to identify gaps and opportunities for growth across key areas, including strategic goal-setting, service delivery, continuous improvement, and peer collaboration. The program emphasizes the importance of strong organizational support, recognizing the role of volunteers, leadership, and funders, who are engaged in the final stages of achieving the designation.

Metropolitan Community College will host Beyond the Step Show: Redefining Leadership in the Next Century of Black History on Monday, Feb. 2, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Omaha Campus Center for Advanced and Emerging Technology (Building 24, Room 101). Step beyond tradition and into transformation at this powerful program that is more than a celebration — it is a call to action.

The event explores how Black leadership is evolving in the 21st century and beyond, challenging stereotypes and reimagining influence, innovation and impact through the voices and experiences of local members of the Divine 9. Attendees will take part in meaningful conversation, cultural connection and forward-thinking dialogue centered on leadership, community advancement and the future of Black excellence.

Step-Up Omaha 2026 Applications for Youth Summer Employment and Career Training Program Are Now Open from Empowerment Network

Step-Up Omaha, an initiative of Empowerment Network dedicated to providing career exploration, job opportunities, internships and entrepreneurship avenues for youth and young adults aged 14-21, is now accepting applications for its 2026 program. For nearly two decades, Step-Up has offered career exploration and entrepreneurial training to prepare Omaha’s next generation for long-term success. Applications are being accepted until March 2.

Organized by the Empowerment Network, Step-Up Omaha has connected more than 9,000 youth with workforce experiences since 2008. This year’s program will run from June 2 to July 31 and includes hands-on training in industries like healthcare, tech, construction, education, and the nonprofit sector. Interns can earn between $1,800 to $3,000 or more.

In 2025, more than 1,700 youth applied and more than 100 local employers hosted interns. Parents have praised the program’s longterm impact. One parent shared how her daughter used Step-Up connections to receive phlebotomy training through Metro’s Career Forward initiative and secure her first job interview with Methodist Hospital. Previous employers have reported 100% satisfaction with their interns’ performances.

Step-Up Omaha is more than a summer job. It’s a community investment. Supported by a collaborative network of funders and partners, Step-Up is an investment in Omaha’s future. The initiative receives support from partners like the City of Omaha, the Charles E. Lakin Foundation and the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Alliance, a program that seeks to positively shift outcomes for boys and young men of color in Omaha through the implementation of evidence-based practices, which address six MBK milestones, cradle to career, during a young person’s life.

Tell us a little about your business. - Lozafina is a woman- and Latinaowned agency built on the belief that storytelling can move people to action. How did you get started in the business? - Lozafina was born out of both necessity and purpose. I started the company in 2020 after experiencing a divorce and a toxic workplace during the pandemic. What could have been a setback became an invitation to build something of my own, something aligned with my lived experience, values, and community roots. I took years of experience in media, communications, and relationship-building and turned it into a business that centers on people, equity, and impact.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Believing I belonged at the table before I was invited. Tell us a little about your family. - Family is everything to me. I’m a mom to two incredible daughters who inspire me daily with their creativity, compassion, and courage. They remind me why representation matters and why the work we do today shapes the world our children will inherit.

Who inspires you? - I’m inspired by women who lead with courage and compassion, especially women of color who build something from nothing and bring others with them.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Your story is not a liability, it’s your superpower.” Once I embraced that, everything changed.

What local nonprofit organizations are you passionate about? - I believe in giving back not just through dollars, but through time, skills, and advocacy. How did you get started in the business? - After relocating to Omaha, I was fortunate to be introduced to the Glenn family through a mutual connection while they were seeking an outside sales representative. Upon moving, I was eager to pursue a role with stronger ties to the community. After meeting the Glenn family and the ProTech team, it was clear that joining ProTech was the right fit.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The transition from TV and digital marketing to outside sales. It required me to adapt my skill set, learn a new product landscape, and build credibility in a different market. I approached this by leaning into relationship-building, asking questions, and staying coachable.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- Building and maintaining client relationships during my six and a half years in TV and digital marketing; this consistently led to repeat business and long-term partnership. Successfully transitioning those relationship-building and consultative skills into outside sales has been especially meaningful, as it allowed me to enter a new industry and earn trust.

Tell us a little about your family. - I was born and raised in the small town of Remsen, Iowa. I am the oldest of four children, with two younger brothers and a younger sister. My parents have been married for 30 years and continue to reside in Remsen.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - My move from Sioux City to Omaha. That transition brought a career change, distance from friends, and a new lifestyle in a new city.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love to golf if the weather is decent, workout if I have motivation, play video games, and grab a drink with friends.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - Growing up I played sports and did fairly well. But not a lot of people know that I was also an AllState saxophone player.

How did you get started in the business? - I grew up around optometry. Today, I’m proud to continue that legacy while creating a warm, modern practice where patients truly feel like family.

Tell us a little about your family. - My family means everything to me. They are my greatest support, my biggest motivation, and the reason I do what I do. Being a wife and a mom is my proudest role, and my kids are truly my greatest joy. Family is at the heart of everything I do, both at home and at work, and it shapes the way I care for every patient who walks through our doors. My husband, Mike, is my biggest fan and my partner in life in every way. Together, we have three beautiful children, all ages six and under, who fill our home with laughter, love, and purpose.

My husband and I are right in the thick of raising three little ones, and we truly believe it takes a village. Can you imagine 17 sixyear-olds in our daughter’s kindergarten classroom? Which superpower would you love to have? - This may sound cliché, being an eye doctor, but I’d love to have eyes in the back of my head. Like for watching my kids, driving, and navigating busy life in general, it would make parenting, parking lots, and multitasking a whole lot easier!

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I’m a proud supporter of Food Bank for the Heartland, whose mission is to help eliminate hunger in Nebraska and western Iowa by ensuring families have access to nutritious food. In addition to our personal involvement, the Family Eyecare by Dr. Michelle team donates time volunteering at the food bank as an organization. Giving back together is one of the ways we live out our belief in caring for our community, both inside and outside the office.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - I’m currently reading Disrupt Everything and Win, a New York Times bestseller that’s been inspiring my leadership mindset. Tell us a little about your business - We are the region’s leading member business organization, focused on growing the economy, supporting employers and making Omaha a great place to live and work.

How did you get started in the business? - In late 2016, I felt a strong pull to find deeper purpose in my work. A friend shared a Facebook post about a leadership development position at the Chamber, and I jumped. I started in 2017 and moved to Member & Investor relations in 2025. I’m motivated every day, knowing that our work matters and strengthens the community.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - On a day off, I love to spend the morning drinking coffee and catching up with my husband, Kevin. If the weather is nice, I like to play a round of golf with friends, and then sit outside to talk about our good shots and over analyze the “not-so-good” ones. Then, I like to spend time at home watching a good, dramatic movie.

What is a unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - Most people probably don’t know that I was a really good slalom water skier (one ski) when I was a teenager. I could weave back and forth to jump the wake and could navigate a zigzag course marked with buoys. I still love the water, but haven’t tried water skiing in years.

Who inspires you? - Stories of resilience and hardship in extreme circumstances really move me. I recently finished a National Geographic docuseries, “Tsunami: Race Against Time,” about the 2004 tsunami caused by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. It includes heroic, as well as tragic, stories. I also regularly listen to a podcast, “Against the Odds,” which recounts true stories about human struggle and triumph in the toughest of moments. I can’t get enough!

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “When you love what you have, you have everything you need.” – A.A. Milne

Which talent would you most like to have? - I would like to have the ability to do math calculations in my head very quickly and easily. I rely on a calculator or spreadsheets so often that I no longer trust even the simplest of equations that I do in my head.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - In my next life, I want to be a judge for the American Dog Show and the Westminster Kennel Club. But, only if I can bypass the dog showing portion and skip right to judging. I especially love the lesser known breeds like the Dandie Dinmont.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I volunteer my time with several nonprofit organizations. One that readers may not be familiar with is The Collective for Hope, formerly known as Grief’s Journey and Ted E. Bear Hollow before that. The organization offers an 8-week family bereavement series, and I facilitate adult and teen grief groups. I’m unusually comfortable talking about death, dying, and grief, which has been both a gift and a challenge that has helped me support others in times of loss.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - I read so many books that it’s too hard to pick a favorite. Here a few I’ve really enjoyed recently: “Frozen River,” “The Correspondent,” “Project Hail Mary” and “The House Is on Fire.”

Hearts United for Animals Offers “Buddy Program” to Support Shelter Pets

Many kind-hearted animal lovers want to help homeless pets but are unable to adopt due to life circumstances. Hearts United for Animals (HUA) is proud to offer a meaningful way for these supporters to make a difference through its Buddy Program.

The HUA Buddy Program allows individuals to provide direct support to a specific cat or dog who has touched their heart. For a minimum monthly donation of just $10, buddies can help care for their chosen animal while they wait for a loving forever home. This support helps offset daily care needs such as food, shelter, and enrichment.

As part of the program, each buddy may write a personal message that is proudly displayed on the animal’s webpage, offering encouragement and showing potential adopters just how loved that pet already is. When the animal is adopted, buddies are notified and thanked for their generosity and compassion during the animal’s stay at HUA.

At that point, participants may choose to support another animal or discontinue their monthly donation. Due to the program’s popularity, HUA has expanded the Buddy Program to allow multiple buddies for a single animal, because one can never have too many friends.

In early 2025, she agreed to step into the role of Program Director for the Hillside Foundation Fund, a newly established nonprofit focused on expanding composting access, improving soil health, and strengthening the region’s circular food system.

While Project Intentional and the Hillside Foundation Fund operate independently, Patricia’s involvement in both reflects a shared philosophy—building systems that reduce waste, increase accessibility, and serve the community for the long term.

That vision will be on display Feb. 27 at the Hillside Foundation Fund’s inaugural gala at The Venue at Highlander. The event will celebrate local climate wins, honor leaders advancing Omaha’s circular economy, and raise funds to support school composting programs and other sustainability initiatives across the metro.

Reformation at the Crossroads Shares Trauma-InformedMentorshipResourceswith Women at Guiding Grace

In January, Reformation at the Crossroads expanded awareness of its faith-centered mentorship programs by speaking with women enrolled in the Guiding Grace program. On Jan. 8, Founder and President Kristine Bockerman met with participants to explain how women can become mentees and access ongoing support through Reformation’s trauma-informed services.

The presentation focused on how unresolved trauma impacts a woman’s emotional, relational, and spiritual well-being, and how personalized mentorship can play a vital role in long-term healing. Women were introduced to Reformation’s approach to pairing trained Christian Trauma-Informed Mentors with mentees to create individualized growth paths rooted in safety, dignity, and restoration.

Reformation at the Crossroads exists to heal women beyond trauma through Christ by providing faith-based mentorship, training, and compassionate support for women navigating abuse, exploitation, homelessness, and other life-altering experiences.

The January gathering reflected Reformation at the Crossroads’ commitment to hands-on, relational care that meets women where they are and walks alongside them as they build stability, confidence, and hope.

Stephen Center’s Street Outreach Program Brings Help Directly to People Experiencing Homelessness

For many people experiencing homelessness, the path to safety and stability begins long before entering a shelter. It often starts on the street, with a conversation, basic necessities, and a trusted connection.

Stephen Center’s Street Outreach program is designed to meet people where they are. Outreach staff engage individuals living unsheltered throughout the Omaha community, including those sleeping outside, in encampments, or in vehicles.

The team provides immediate support such as food, water, hygiene supplies, clothing, and weather-appropriate gear, while building trust and relationships over time.

Street Outreach also serves as a critical entry point to Stephen Center’s broader services. Once individuals are ready, staff help connect them to emergency shelter, medical and mental health care, substance use treatment, and housing navigation.

This individualized, low-barrier approach helps people take steps forward at their own pace. During extreme weather conditions, the Street Outreach team increases engagement to help keep unsheltered individuals informed about shelter options and safe resources.

Winter “Wipe” Out Donation Drive Benefits Educare of Omaha, Inc.

Community members are invited donate baby wipes to Educare of Omaha, Inc. during the Winter “Wipe” Out Donation Drive this February. Collection opportunities will be available all month long.

“Educare of Omaha, Inc. serves over 600 children each day. That’s a lot of diaper changes,” Executive Director Rafel O. Hart said. “Last year, the community needed over 228,000 wipes to keep our infants, toddlers and preschoolers clean and healthy.”

Awareness Month. Nearly 70% of Nebraskans become survivors of dating violence before the age of 30, with adolescence being the most common time for first incidents. Child Saving Institute (CSI) believes that every young person deserves healthy, consensual relationships. Their growing programs provide resources to help teens and families navigate and heal from dating violence.

• Family Empowerment Program (FEP): Free support groups for survivors of domestic violence and their children, providing tools to heal and rebuild safe, stable lives.

• Pediatric & Adolescent Therapy: Specialized services to help children, teens and young adults process trauma, build confidence and develop healthy relationship patterns.

FEP continues to create meaningful impact through events like Coats & Coffee, where survivors shared stories over coffee and received free winter coats. The upcoming Galentine’s Day celebration offers another line of support and empowerment for survivors.

More than 350,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur in the U.S. each year. This February, the American Heart Association is urging Nebraskans to step in as first responders until professional help arrives.

Nine out of 10 people who experience cardiac arrest outside a hospital do not survive, often because they don’t receive CPR quickly enough. The Association’s Nation of Lifesavers initiative aims to change that by empowering communities to act.

Here are three ways Nebraskans can take charge of their health this Heart Month:

Great Plains Black History Museum Unveils 2026 Exhibit Lineup

The Great Plains Black History Museum is proud to announce its expansive 2026 exhibit and events schedule, inviting the community to engage deeply with Black history, resilience, achievement, and cultural legacy throughout the year.

February’s programming sets the tone for a year rooted in truth, remembrance, and celebration. Headlining the Black History Month experience is The Negro Green Book of Travel: Nebraska Travel, opening Feb. 4 through March 28, which explores how African American travelers navigated segregation-era America using the essential Green Book as a guide to safety, dignity, and survival. The exhibit places Nebraska within a national narrative of mobility, resistance, and resilience.

Also during Black History Month, families and visitors are invited to participate in Legacy Quest: A Black History Month Scavenger Hunt, taking place Saturday, Feb. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m., an interactive experience designed to engage all ages in learning local and national Black history in meaningful ways.

La Fuente Business Center Trains 70 in Latino Entrepreneur Accelerator Program

La Fuente Business Center, a nonprofit organization focused on economic opportunities for immigrant communities, trained 70 aspiring Latino entrepreneurs during the first two weeks of 2026 through its Latino Entrepreneur Accelerator Program. Eighty percent of participants were women of color.

The training included accounting and tax seminars as well as business plan development, providing culturally responsive education designed to help entrepreneurs build financially sustainable businesses. Instruction covered pricing strategies, operations, customer service, accounting, marketing and financial planning.La Fuente emphasizes hands-on training in Spanish led by experienced professionals and provides ongoing technical assistance from accountants and business consultants. The organization supports entrepreneurs across eastern Nebraska, including Fremont, Lincoln, Crete, Schuyler, Columbus and the greater Omaha area.

The training was supported by United Way of the Midlands, the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, FNBO, the Weitz Family Foundation, the Community Foundation for Western Iowa, the City of Omaha and The Sherwood Foundation.

Avenue Scholars Partners with Local Professionals on Job Interview Practice for Youth

Think back to your very first job interview. Maybe your palms were sweating. Maybe you talked too fast. Maybe you got the job. Maybe you didn’t.

Whatever the outcome, it’s likely your next interview went smoother than the first. You were more confident in your abilities, more comfortable talking about yourself and fielding curveball questions. Because, as with anything, practice makes perfect.

In December, Avenue Scholars partnered with dozens of Omaha-area professionals who volunteered to provide interview practice to more than 250 Scholars. At these Mock Interviews, Scholars from each of the program’s 13 partner high schools were paired with volunteer interviewers who asked them common interview questions, such as: What are your three greatest strengths? Tell me about a time you made a mistake and how you handled it. What’s something you did that made you proud this year?

The interviewers graded Scholars on their confidence, professionalism, enthusiasm, and the clarity of their responses. Avenue Scholars, which helps guide participating youth to high-wage, high-demand careers, later provided the feedback to each Scholar to help them prepare for the real interviews they will encounter on their career journey. Volunteer interviewers came from a wide array of industries: healthcare, technology, cybersecurity, the skilled trades, project management, and others.

In between interviews, Scholars had the chance to have a professional headshot taken by Omaha’s Churlish Media. They were encouraged to use the photo on professional-facing platforms to help them in their job search. UWM Hosts Coffee & Contacts Chamber Event

United Way of the Midlands (UWM) was excited to welcome more than 150 local business leaders and community members to their offices when they hosted the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Coffee & Contacts event on Tuesday, Jan. 13. The ‘sold out’ before-theworkday-begins event was a great way for individuals to kick off 2026 with new connections, new learnings and new information on how to engage in the Omaha-metro community.

A Year of Kindness, Connection and Collaboration With Chabad of Omaha

During the event, attendees enjoyed coffee, hot chocolate and pastries while networking, building visibility and creating new relationships. Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday with Keep Nebraska Beautiful

On July 4, 2026, the US will be celebrating 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This semiquincentennial is a historic moment for the nation and Keep Nebraska Beautiful (KNB) hopes to celebrate with an equally historical cleanup to bring all Americans together.

In honor of America’s 250th birthday, they’re asking Americans to make a new declaration – to declare their support for the Greatest American Cleanup. The Keep America Beautiful “Greatest American Cleanup” is the nation’s largest community improvement project taking place annually in thousands of communities nationwide. Their goal is to remove 25 billion pieces of litter from parks, waterways and public spaces by July 4. It’s ambitious but achievable if everyone comes together.

This past year marked a powerful season of growth and impact for Chabad of Omaha. At the heart of this work is the Kitchen of Kindness, which delivered more than 2,000 acts of care through meals, wellness check-ins and personal outreach. Over 1,200 homemade challah and meals were prepared and delivered to homebound neighbors, while new take-and-go grocery options ensured continued support during the food pantry’s transition toward a full reopening this spring.

Community involvement made this impact possible. Nearly 150 volunteer shifts were contributed by individuals of all ages and abilities, creating a shared culture of service rooted in empathy and action. As the need for hands-on community care continues to grow, Chabad of Omaha is actively seeking volunteers to support meal preparation, deliveries, wellness outreach and community programs. February is Low Vision Awareness Month, a time to recognize the obstacles and achievements of people living with vision loss. Individuals with low or no vision show that visual impairment does not limit their capacity to succeed personally or professionally, inspiring an inclusive community.

In Omaha, approximately 15,000 youth and adults experience significant vision loss. Outlook Enrichment provides a variety of services tailored to meet the personal needs of individuals with low or no vision, helping them live independently, confidently engage in their communities and continue doing the things they love. One activity kids and teens love is overnight camp! Outlook Enrichment is re-introducing its Outlook Explorers: Journey Beyond Sight Camp for youth and teens ages 9-19 who are blind or have low vision. It’s a six-day overnight experience held at UNO July 19-24. This camp will give youth the unique opportunity to be with peers who face the same challenges and for many participants, it could their first time being independent overnight. They will gain confidence in a supportive, safe and fully accessible environment.

Campers will participate in adaptive sports, outdoor activities, arts and cultural experiences, technology skill-building and recreational outings led by trained staff and volunteers. The Community Foundation for Western Iowa has announced that its 2026 Community Impact Grants Cycle is open Feb. 1 through March 15. Grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 are available to nonprofits, governmental entities and eligible tax-exempt organizations who are doing innovative and meaningful work throughout Pottawattamie County.Community Impact Grants are allocated to creative and impactful projects in a variety of focus areas, such as: Arts & Culture, Community Betterment, Community Engagement, Education, Environment, Health, Human Services, and Youth. Programming must meet a clear, identifiable need, and align with the Community Foundation’s mission to improve the lives of all Pottawattamie County residents.

The majority of the Community Foundation’s grant-making is directed by donors who have established funds to purposefully impact charities located in the region and throughout Western Iowa. Community Impact Grants are given from the discretionary funds of the Community Foundation. Individuals and businesses can create their own fund to ‘give back’ and contributions can receive major tax benefits. In 2025, investors at the Community Foundation generously awarded 118 grants to organizations totaling more than $4 Million through their charitable funds.

Lily Haven Completes Home Updates in Preparation for Survivor Program

Lily Haven is a nonprofit dedicated to offering hope and healing to girls ages 14–18 who have survived human trafficking through a safe, supportive, family-style home. As the organization prepares for future programming, important updates are already underway inside the residence where survivors will one day begin their healing journeys.

In recent weeks, Lily Haven has completed fresh interior painting and has begun thoughtfully redecorating the home. A child’s well being is made up of many moving parts, and parents often juggle a steady flow of questions and fears as their children grow. Are they eating well, sleeping enough, keeping up socially, staying active, and feeling confident in themselves? Even seasoned parents face new concerns at every stage, learning that each child brings their own pace, personality, and needs. One of the greatest challenges is finding the balance between being emotionally available and still providing steady guidance.

Seasonal changes can add another layer to these concerns. During winter, shorter days and colder weather shift routines and energy levels. Less outdoor play and increased screen time can influence mood, focus, and sleep. These changes often happen gradually, making them easy to overlook in daily life.
