Water Mill South

There’s something about this season that always brings me back to what truly matters—gathering with loved ones, sharing stories around the table, and finding beauty in the small, meaningful moments that make home feel special. As we welcome the holidays, this issue is a celebration of gratitude, giving, and the art of living well.

We begin with a touch of holiday inspiration.

Hannah Selinger’s Holiday Gift Guide is a thoughtfully curated collection of beautiful home goods and meaningful finds—pieces that spark joy and make entertaining a little more magical. For those who love giving

ON THE COVER

something truly special, Isla Hartley’s Luxe Looks offers elegant ideas for even the hardest-to-shop-for friends, while Beverly Stephen takes us on a delightful shopping tour in search of exquisite serving pieces—just in time for your Thanksgiving table.

This month, I’m especially excited to feature the work of two talented designers who each bring such heart and creativity to their craft—Jessica Gersten and Emma Beryl Kemper. Jessica’s Sag Harbor retreat is pure joy—6,000 square feet of warmth, whimsy, and modern sophistication inspired by her clients’ vibrant energy and adventurous spirit. Emma’s East Hampton project feels like a breath of sea air, blending Parisian charm with coastal ease for a family who wanted something brighter and more playful than their city home. Both remind us that design, at its best, is deeply personal—an ongoing conversation between life, art, and the spaces we call our own.

As the year winds down, we turn our gaze south to the dazzling energy of Miami Art Week 2025. It’s a celebration that turns the city into a living canvas—alive with color, creativity, and inspiration. Our Art Basel Miami Beach feature captures it all: the grand galleries, the hidden pop-ups, the private soirées that define the week. And if art and food are your perfect pairing (they certainly are mine), you’ll love Jaxon Wilde’s “Where Art Meets Appetite”—a culinary tour through Miami’s most artful dining destinations.

And of course, back here at home, Karen Dash’s Realty Check keeps us in the loop with the latest in Hamptons real estate—new listings, record sales, and all the stories that make our corner of the world so endlessly fascinating.

As you turn these pages, I hope you feel inspired to slow down, open your doors, and fill your home with warmth, laughter, and light. May this season bring moments of comfort and connection—and may your gatherings, whether big or small, remind you of just how much there is to be grateful for.

Wishing you a beautiful Thanksgiving and a joyful start to the holidays.

THot Sales and Listings...Along with the Latest Real Estate News in the Hamptons and Beyond

hose of us who are Hamptons real estate lookie-loos often think of December as the most wonderful time of the year. It’s fun to see people scramble to complete transactions before the end of the year. However, just this autumn we’ve seen some quite high prices in Bridgehampton and in Montauk. The Hamptons are back, bay-bee!

After a brief lull, the ultra-luxury Hamptons market—those coveted estates above the $10 million mark—has made a triumphant return. Following a period when many migrated south in search of sun and space, renewed confidence from Wall Street, favorable lending conditions, and an enduring appreciation for the East End’s understated beauty have drawn buyers back in droves.

This season’s demand is defined by discernment. The most sought-after properties are impeccably restored, fully furnished, and move-in ready— homes that invite immediate enjoyment and effortless entertaining. Listings that require renovation or design vision are lingering a bit longer, as today’s buyers gravitate toward perfection already achieved.

SHUTTERSTOCK FOUNDER SELLS

Ocean views, private dune walkways and the promise of effortlessly entertaining 20 of your closest friends are timeless commodities. Case in point: In an off-market deal that barely had time to generate gossip, Shutterstock founder Jonathan Oringer sold his oceanfront estate at 125 Mid

Ocean Drive in Bridgehampton for a cool $57 million. The 10,300-squarefoot residence, perched on just over two acres with more than 160 feet of ocean frontage, marks the third-largest Hamptons real estate transaction of the year. Represented by Douglas Elliman’s Erica Grossman, Paul Brennan and Martha Gundersen, the property changed hands via a deal brought by Terry Cohen of Compass; the buyer has chosen to remain anonymous, which is no fun for us.

Oringer purchased the estate more than a decade ago for $40 million and briefly tested the waters of selling in 2021 after relocating to Florida during the pandemic. (Like many, he likely learned that “living the dream” in Miami in August requires a personal climate-control bubble.) But this year the timing was right—and more importantly, so was the house. The Barnes Coy–designed home, built in 2014 by Ben Krupinski Builder, features walnut and limestone floors, soaring ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling glass that invites natural light into every corner—the better to take in those ocean view.

Inside, the main floor includes an open gourmet kitchen designed to support both intimate dinners and full-scale catered soirées, alongside a dining area, living room, and den with a custom bar setup—because sipping an icy martini with the Atlantic roaring dramatically in the background is practically part of the zoning code. Additional amenities include a large gym, office, studio, and a game/spa area leading to the pool deck. The upstairs holds the primary suite—which has its own floor, for heaven’s sake—along with multiple guest suites and a separate two-bedroom staff

apartment. Outside, an infinity-edge gunite pool overlooks the ocean, and an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, and TV make the transition from indoor lounging to “outdoor entertaining” seamless, should one feel inspired to grill for someone other than the caterer.

SURF’S UP IN MONTAUK

If Oringer’s sale represents the no-fuss, turnkey dream at the top end of the market, the momentum is hardly limited to Bridgehampton. Over in Montauk, the oceanfront neighborhood of Ditch Plains—long beloved by surfers, barefoot creatives, and people who own exactly one Patagonia fleece they wear unironically— has become one of the East End’s most competitive enclaves. Douglas Elliman agents Erica Grossman and Kyle Rosko co-represented the property at 42 Deforest Road with Hedgerow Exclusive Properties. The property is expected to break the Ditch Plains price record. Though the final contract price remains under wraps, the most recent ask was $19.95 million, and the demand in the area suggests the final number will not disappoint.

Ditch Plains is not just a place to own a beach house; it has developed a mythology. Five properties in the area have gone under contract in recent weeks, ranging from multimilliondollar waterfront estates to more modest homes that still manage to command sevenfigure enthusiasm. Buyers are drawn to its surf-

centric culture, its unpretentious (but not too unpretentious) personality, and the fact that one can wander directly from morning waves to a lobster roll without needing to change out of a wetsuit. And at 42 Deforest, one gets all the luxuries without sacrificing the barefoot vibe: roughly 5,100 square feet of living space, eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms, expansive decks, chef-grade kitchens, multiple fireplaces, and yes, a heated pool and spa overlooking the shoreline—because a hot tub is a need after

Those who missed out on 42 Deforest may consider its neighbor: 40 Deforest Road, the last available home in the “On the Break” oceanfront development. Listed at $17.495 million, the newly completed Casa Las Olas offers 4,800 square feet, six bedrooms, six bathrooms, curated furnishings by Meredith Baer, and a primary suite with its own private waterside terrace. The oceanside heated gunite pool includes a sun shelf, because sometimes one simply wants to be in water while barely being in water. The deck spans nearly the entire width of the home, ready for dinner parties that look like they were staged for Vogue’s Quiet Luxury: Beach Edition spread.

QUIET IN THE NORTHWEST

If Montauk and Bridgehampton appeal to those who want either minimal effort or maximum surf energy, East Hampton’s Northwest Woods offers something else entirely: a quiet retreat tucked among towering white pines. At 5 White Pine, a 1976 barn-style residence designed by architect Alfredo De Vido has hit the market for $3.895 million. Represented by Mary Slattery of The Corcoran Group, the property is owned by acclaimed interior designer Kerry Delrose, whose work spans luxury estates and high-end residences across the globe.

Unlike the gleaming glass-walled modern compounds popping up across the East End, this property leans into texture, quiet, and warmth. Floor-to-ceiling glass sliders open onto nearly two

acres of woodland landscape, gardens, and slate patios. The heated gunite pool and in-ground spa are surrounded by sculptural accents, lending the outdoor space the feel of a private art garden. Inside, the living room features vaulted ceilings and a stone fireplace; the kitchen blends high-end appliances with cherry cabinetry; and a cozy wood-paneled sunroom—complete with skylights—provides a year-round cocoon for reading, lounging, or hosting polite conversation about the state of the world (or more likely, complaining about traffic in the village). The four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath layout is flexible enough for both quiet weekends and summer gatherings, while still feeling like an escape rather than an entertainment venue.

LOUIS C.K. SELLS ON SHELTER ISLAND

On the tranquil shores of Shelter Island, history and refinement meet at Primrose Cottage, a 123 year old Tudor-style waterfront estate that has long captured the imagination of those who value legacy and luxury. Once a presidential retreat where Theodore Roosevelt and William McKinley stayed, and most recently owned by comedian Louis C.K., the home has now sold for $4.35 million. C.K purchased the property in 2014 for $2.44 million.

Steeped in character, the residence has played host to notable figures for more than a century. In 1905, it was the site of the informal debut of Peter Pan and later welcomed Babe Ruth

as a guest of Congressman James Roe, who once owned a grand expanse of land along Westmoreland.

During his decade of ownership, Louis C.K. undertook a meticulous restoration, preserving the home’s historic charm while integrating contemporary sophistication. The result is a harmonious blend of original millwork, six wood-burning fireplaces, and modern comforts, including central air, energy-efficient systems, and a chef’s kitchen appointed with premium appliances and a newly added butler’s pantry.

Spanning nearly 5,000 square feet with six bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths, the home is gracefully set on 2.2 acres of manicured waterfront grounds. A 20-by-50-foot heated gunite pool and hot tub invite relaxation, while a deepwater dock on West Neck Creek offers effortless access to the island’s pristine bays.

He steps into his new role as Managing Director of Christie’s East Hampton office— the brokerage’s sole presence in one of the most competitive luxury markets in the Hamptons. Bruehl arrives at Christie’s with serious momentum. Alongside his former partner Jennifer Wilson, he closed $177 million in transactions between June 2024 and June 2025, earning the duo the No. 9 spot in The Real Deal’s latest Hamptons rankings. While Wilson remains at Saunders, Bruehl brings with him junior partner Angel Theodore, signaling a fresh chapter for both the agent and the East Hampton office.

Christie’s opened its East Hampton location in late 2023, but the brand has yet to carve out a dominant footprint in the Hamptons. Bruehl doesn’t shy away from the challenge. Calling the firm’s initial presence “underbranded,” he sees untapped potential— and now he’s steering the effort to change that.

Represented by Carl Gambino and Marco Maida of The Gambino Group at Compass, this historic estate has found its next steward — a fitting continuation of its remarkable story, where heritage, craftsmanship, and coastal serenity endure in perfect balance.

CH CH CHANGES

After ten years as a leading force at Saunders & Associates, top-producing Hamptons broker Ed Bruehl has made a high-profile move to Christie’s International Real Estate Group.

In his new position, Bruehl will oversee a 15-agent team that includes seasoned veterans like Bonita DeWolf and Sanda Busch of the Gottlieb Team. He’s also eyeing expansion, aiming to recruit elite senior producers and open future offices in Southampton and Westhampton. His strategy includes leveraging high-impact marketing tools to drive visibility and sales.

Bruehl’s pedigree includes past tenures at Sotheby’s International Realty and Morgan Stanley, where he worked as a financial advisor before turning his focus to real estate. Known for his sharp instincts and hands-on leadership, Bruehl’s move to Christie’s signals more than just a career shift—it’s a power play aimed at elevating the brand’s standing in the Hamptons.

A Sag Harbor house provides a designer with the seed of a bright idea

A caterpillar-like leather sectional by De Sede serves as both focal point and foil for the other pieces in the room.

feel equipped – inspired – to cope with the world. Yet when Jessica Gersten was working on the Sag Harbor home of a married couple with three children, their joie de vivre carried over into the choices she made for the project – and into her own design practice (more on the latter later).

“They wanted a fun approach,” says Gersten of the seven-bedroom, six thousand-square-foot new-build, a contemporary structure with wood shingles and windows framed in steel-colored wood. She describes the homeowners, with whom she’d worked on previous projects, as “design risk-takers” who brought her on to introduce a bit of whimsy to the space. “It’s a tight package,” she says. “The palette, the layout, the general scheme – it all flows because the homeowners weren’t afraid of bold strokes.”

Exhibit A: a caterpillar-like leather sectional by De Sede that serves as both focal point and foil for the other pieces in the room. “That sofa was the starting point,” says Gersten. “I needed something big and bold to fill what was essentially a living room-and-a-half. And since we weren’t going to do multiple seating areas, it had to be super-durable.”

that just happen to swivel, adding another “playful yet practical element to the room,” says Gersten.

At an angle from a window overlooking the garden is a forged-iron swing in the shape of a great circle. The custom-fabricated piece simultaneously brings to mind a site-specific sculpture –one that should be hanging from the bough of a tree – and a functional artwork that looks entirely at home (Gersten says the younger members of the family make frequent use of it). “A lot of people would have shied away from having a swing in the room, but when I suggested it, they were, like, Great!”

In keeping with the laid-back theme, she kitted out the family room with a pair of slouchy armchairs by Craft Associates and a round Object & Ideas coffee table, a 1st Dibs find, and her own Uman plaster and leather ceiling pendant. The effect is one of stylistic cohesion, in which each piece exists in kinship with the other.

The same is true of the dining room, which features rich dark hues, a subtle reference to the window trim... “A dark dining room makes a really bold statement,” says Gersten, “and the clients let us run with it.” She offset the inky palette with a pale oak table of her own design paired with Lawson Fenning chairs covered in Nobilis fabric. A run of custom conical pendants fabricated from shaved stone add a finishing touch of drama to the moody space.

But the project’s most striking elements are the steel-and-wood staircase in the center of the house – another reference to the exterior trim – and the massive, looping rope pendant light that illuminates the double-height stairwell, both of which Gersten designed herself. Regarding the first, she says, “It was very important to have a really strong center point from which everything else in the house radiated out.”

Now about that rope pendant light. Gersten wanted something that would catch the eye from every vantage – from the outside, the inside, upstairs and downstairs. To achieve this, she created lots of

layers with macramé ropes that dip in a way that resembles writing in the air. “It’s super-versatile and it does all this funky stuff. It can drop down to the floor.” The results of her handiwork pleased Gersten so much that she went on to create her own ropelight collection inspired by that initial design and now available via Una Malan. The pieces are made in Portugal, in a town north of Porto, and both the rope-work and the glass spheres are made by hand. She also recently launched Lusitano, a collection of elegantly proportioned horsehair-trimmed chairs and loungers sold through the art and design gallery STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN. Bold strokes indeed.

The Season of Giving

OUR FAVORITE HOME GOODS FOR 2025

On the East End, there is no shortage of good options when it comes to shopping for design-forward gifts for friends and family. The only trouble is, how does one narrow it down?

or 2025, we’ve scoured the stores and picked out a few of our favorite things. Whether your loved one loves to entertain, muse over architecture, or simply look at something pretty, local stores have something ready to be wrapped up with a perfect little bow.

Maybe the ideal home gift is a gift about home. In 2023, noted architecture critic Paul Goldberger penned the 280page book Blue Dream and the Legacy of Modernism in the Hamptons: A House by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The book tells the story of a house on East Hampton’s Atlantic Double Dunes, a modernist collaboration between collectors Julie Reyes Taubman and Robert Taubman, architects Diller Scofido + Renfro, builder Ed Bulgin, designer Michael Lewis, and landscape architect Michael Boucher. Illustrated with images of other modernist homes, as well as documents from the design project, this book, the ideal pick from East Hampton’s independent bookseller BookHampton, can live prominently on the coffee table of any design lover who is passionate about modernism and its long legacy.

At Bridgehampton’s Comerford Collection, shoppers can keep their eyes out for prizes that are truly extraordinary. Decorative ceramic and glass pieces are de rigueur at Comeford, like the ceramic series “Critters,” handcrafted objets d’arte in terra cotta with blue glaze. Equally arresting: matte-glazed Blue Moki Marbles, a sculptural piece that can live on any beloved home surface, and that draws the eye in, thanks to its pop of color. Comerford also offers beautiful textiles, like the medium-weight Klimt throw, made from linen, wool, and acrylic, and woven in alternating bands of white and green.

Home gifts should touch all the senses—and that includes the sense of smell. For a home fragrance that both looks and smells impressive, head directly to Sag Harbor’s MONC XIII, where you can purchase a bespoke bottle of Cire Trudon’s Madurai Room Spray Les Belles Matieres. Made by the world’s oldest candle-maker, the Frenchbased Cire Trudon, this onyx-colored bottle comes with its own atomizer, just like the classic bottles of perfume. When the Madurai is gone, the bottle will live on. (But those on the hunt for a refillable scent can shop Cire Trudon’s La Promeneuse Diffuser Set, also available at

Antigua Large bowls Sunshine Amagansett

MONC XIII; with adjustable settings, it can set the scent for any room.)

Relative Southampton newcomer Aloof Icon has plenty of design-forward gifts for the pop art person in your life. A lighter designed to mimic a tube of lipstick? The ideal stocking stuffer for the friend in your life who always has a candle burning. A resin-coated tray decorated with actual overthe-counter medications and hand-filled glitter

should decamp to Amagansett’s Sunshine. A large ceramic serving bowl from Portugal—the Antigua—makes a great gift for the consummate entertainer, and hand-blown water carafes made from recycled glass (and available in aqua, rose, and green) add a bit of wit and whimsy to any modern tablescape.

For an equally unique Amagansett-based shopping

for the home, from doorknockers to planters to sculptures. Founder Lori Leven curates the vintage pieces and folk art herself, adding to the homegrown feel of this classic and beloved Amagansett institution. Inventory is regularly changing, but a recent favorite of ours includes a stunning midcentury ceramic owl bank. That quirky friend who

loves home goods and is equally impossible to shop for? This just might be the destination that cures all gifting ailments.

Charming traditional home perched high on East Hampton’s historic second dune. Recently renovated, surrounded by manicured lawns and lush gardens, featuring a chef’s kitchen, airy living areas, patios, heated pool, gym, and close to world-class beaches and the village.

The New Classics

Some of our favorite decor experts shared creative themes and trends, along with their favorite places to hunt for tabletop treasures.

For their holiday tables this season, Hamptonites crave ideas that feel fresh and trendy. While there’s plenty to love about the traditional colors and turkeys, they do get a little tired for some.

“During this festive time of year, people love to experience spaces that feel transportive,” said Kathy Kuo, founder of Kathy Kuo Home. “A thoughtfully decorated holiday table is one of the best ways to create an enchanting, immersive atmosphere for your guests.”

Kim Seybert, founder of Kim Seybert Design, tries unexpected colors to break away from the traditional Thanksgiving palette. “Blue feels unexpected yet timeless — it’s elegant, adaptable, and perfectly at home in the Hamptons’ coastal setting,” she says. To shop for her table, Seybert heads to Flowers by Beth in Amagansett, Loaves & Fishes Cookshop in Bridgehampton and Duryea’s Market in Montauk.

THE RETURN OF RALPH LAUREN CHRISTMAS

This season, Hamptons hosts are embracing the romance of nostalgia — and no look embodies that better than the “Ralph Lauren Christmas.” It’s a “revival of vintage-inspired look that blends equestrian elegance with cozy Americana,” says Cassie LaMere, founder of the luxury events planning company Cassie LaMere Events.

Picture tartan linens, velvet ribbons cascading from chandeliers and drinks served from cut-crystal decanters, “to make spirits bright,” she says. A palette of rich reds, blues and winter whites evokes both East End sophistication and rustic warmth, while heirloom china and antique silver add a nostalgic twist.

For local ingredients, LaMere pops over to the farm shops like Amber Waves in Amagansett and Round Swamp in Bridgehampton. “Whether you’re gathering at a historic home in Sagaponack or an oceanfront

property in Amagansett, the holidays are about creating connection and the table is where it all begins,” she explains.

EFFORTLESS COASTAL GLAMOUR

For those craving elegance without excess, “refined ease” defines the Hamptons table this holiday season. This entails a blend of fine details —“textured linens, coastal greenery and warm metallics”— with the simplicity of printed paper settings that mimic porcelain, notes Mallory Killingstad, co-founder of Pavilion Paper. “It’s a way to enjoy that polished, magazine-worthy table without sacrificing the joy of actually being present at the table,” she says.

The palette stays neutral and organic, accented with glassware from local favorites like Homenature in Southampton and Fishers Home Furnishings in Sag Harbor.

“The most charming tables aren’t too coordinated,” agrees Dan Mazzarini, principal and creative director

at Mazzarini & Co. Instead, they reflect the collector’s unique eye, he says: splatterware plates from Williams Sonoma, candlesticks from an antiquing adventure at Beall & Bell in Greenport and stemware from a Paris flea market.

Kathy Kuo, founder of Kathy Kuo Home, adds a romantic edge with Baroque-inspired details such as pewter serveware.

The designer recently launched a collection of floral bouquets with UrbanStems designed around a timeless mix of soft green, white and blush tones. Mixed with decorative local produce, they create tables that “resemble a painting, artfully dressed with fresh bunches of carrots and radishes,” Kuo says.

LIGHT, LAYER AND LINGER

“On a holiday table, I’m obsessed with layering tiers of taper candles to create the most beautiful romantic glow,” Kuo says. “This year, I draped each dining chair with a super soft reindeer pelt that makes the dining room feel extra cozy.”

In hospitality, lighting candles and fireplaces is called a “flame program,” says Mazzarini, who enjoys bringing the same concept to residential events. “We love candles for all the tables,” he says. “They complement the sunset and make a beautiful transition from day to night.”

There’s a renewed admiration for the hosting styles of East End icons like Ina Garten and Martha Stewart, LaMere adds. Their emphasis on elevated ease, seasonal ingredients and personal touches encourages Hamptons hosts to create meaningful gatherings without excess fuss. “Dim the lights, light the taper candles, and let the scent of evergreens and warm spices drift from room to room,” LaMere says.

color walls, oxblood leather banquettes, bistro chairs imported from Paris, and a brass rail bar conspire to set a Parisian vibe. There’s a definite appeal to Francophiles and to well-dressed and well-heeled diners already familiar with La Goulue in Manhattan and Palm Beach who also have Hamptons homes. The lively Parisian inspired bistro named for a famous Moulin Rouge can-can dancer offers French classics such as onion soup, endive/roquefort salad, asparagus with hollandaise, roast chicken, rack of lamb, and seared salmon with lentils and mustard sauce. Owners are Southampton natives and hospitality veterans Joseph De Cristofaro and Anthony Punnett.

THE AMERICAN HOTEL

The American Hotel was built n 1846 at the height of the whaling era in Sag Harbor. It retains a historical character and an elegance punctuated with white tablecloths, linen napkins, and a dress code that guarantees you won’t be offended by the sight of other customers in tank tops or gym shorts. The high end cuisine is described as French/American. You might start a meal with veal sweetbreads a la grenobloise, Long Island duck confit, or bison carpaccio. Then move on to entrees such as fresh local flounder a la meuniere, brace of quail, or roast loin of rabbit au jus. A Grand Award winning wine list offers abundant pairing options. Locals gather at the convivial bar and there is a 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. happy hour. Brunch is popular here.

Cowfish is a light and bright restaurant with great water views over the canal in Hampton Bays. The new American menu features appetizers such as crispy Brussels sprouts and Guinness braised pork belly. Mains include seared ahi tuna with pineapple

coconut fried rice and a signature prime cowboy rib eye steak. Banana cream pie and iron skillet cookies are popular desserts. It’s also open for lunch and weekend brunch. The spacious interior makes it ideal for groups celebrating birthdays or wedding showers. They’re busy booking holiday parties. They also cater a number of on-site and off-site weddings.

HONORING PASTAND FUTURE ARTISTS

Guild Hall will be exhibiting the Student Art Festival: Rauschenberg 100, on view from November 15th through January 4th.

The festival celebrates the centennial of Robert Rauschenberg’s birth as part of an international initiative organized by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. A collaboration between eight East End public schools and ten regional artists, the exhibition explores what Rauschenberg described as the “gap between art and life,” embracing experimentation and chance through a wide range of materials and creative approaches.

permanent collection as well as special photos, curated by Museum Director & Curator of Visual Arts, Melanie Crader and organized by Theater Director & Curator of Performing Arts, Anthony Madonna and Claire Hunter, Museum Coordinator & Curatorial Associate. The exhibition is also cocurated by the Guild Hall Teen Arts Council, under the guidance of Kayla Matters, Programs Manager, Learning + New Works.

Melanie Crader comments, “We looked at the concept of the show from an educational standpoint. Rauschenberg is an artist that every artist likes to teach. You remember his impact and innovation.”

In a beautiful community effort, East End professional artists have worked with teachers and students from kindergarten to grade 12. The kinetic effort is palpable in the collaboration which includes hands-on spring and fall mentor sessions as well as studio visits. Kayla Matters comments, “The schools enjoy the fact that it is an extended process so the students have the chance to build the relationship with the artist and focus on the process of making their art.”

It has been an abundance of riches with the guest artists: Linda K Alpern; Scott Bluedorn; Peter Dayton; Eva Faye; Margaret Garrett; Candace Hill–Montgomery; Laurie Lambrecht; Bastienne Schmidt; Kevin Teare; and Evan Yee. Matters comments, “The artists have been excited by what the kids are making and are inspired by the emerging talent.”

Artist Bastienne Schmidt worked with third and fourth graders and noted the age group “has an openness to ideas and process that is very

unexpected forms and objects into his artwork. The kids loved the freedom of process.” For example, artist Scott Bluedorn who incorporates found objects into his works took his students to the beach. They did a beach clean-up then reused those materials to create their art.

One of the greatest present-day challenges is to encourage youth to get off their phones and go “offline.” “The students are definitely very engaged in finding their voice,” says Matters, “The artists also encourage the students to explore their own interests and subject matter.” This is a valuable lesson to learn self-expression and dialogue IRL (In Real Life.) Catherine Brigham, the art teacher at Shelter Island School, reflects, “It gives students an ownership of the work and having it displayed in a place like Guild Hall gives them a great sense of pride.”

It has also been a valuable lesson for the Teen Arts Council, a group of local high school students who meet weekly throughout the school year to learn about curation, art criticism, and museum practices as a paid internship. Melanie Crader comments, “We had sessions with them on how exhibition design works and how your think critically about the artwork and the viewer and how you create a story line.”

This story line here is the power of community. Crader says, “It’s great to see a full circle moment from kids to professional artists to teachers to parents all connecting. It’s very exciting.”

The museum exhibition is free to the public and a great family activity over the holidays.

The designer used a relaxed and playful form along with rattan chairs from the Citizenry, a pair of Jacques DeNeef slouchy N701 sofas, cylindrical velvet ottomans, and a travertine-topped coffee table.
A

designer decorates a Hamptons beach cottage with a dash of French razzle-dazzle.

How do you decorate a beach house in East Hampton without making it look like a typical beach house? That was the challenge the interior designer Emma Beryl Kemper set herself when a young couple with a child engaged her to design the interiors of their three bedroom one-story cottage in the hamlet of Springs.

Their primary residence was in Brooklyn, in a space that skewed industrial. For their second home, an unpretentious structure with a front porch and a gravel driveway, built in 2017, they yearned for rooms that were “brighter and more colorful than those in their Brooklyn home,” and also “funky, artsy, creative, and inspiring,” Kemper says. They wanted, they told her, ‘Parisian beach chic.’ A good designer must also be a skilled interpreter of desires and Kemper took that confounding phrase – Parisian beach chic? – as metaphor.

“They gave me a bunch of French images and we pulled up our own and we started to define that phrase for ourselves,” says Kemper, whose first book, ‘House Rules: 100 Ways to Feel at Home’ (Union Square & Co.) came out in January. “We decided to add furniture that was architectural in form but nothing super-serious or matchy-matchy.”

It was fortunate that no structural work needed to be done and that the homeowners don’t much care about formal interiors. They like the semi open-plan layout and that the front door opens into the living and dining areas. A formal entrance hall would have seemed out of keeping with the casual nature of the cottage anyway. “It’s meant to be a beach shack,” agrees Kemper, who observes that it’s the kind of house in which a surfboard or a wetsuit just beyond the threshold, propped next to the front door, “adds to the fun.”

Still, a vibrant beach shack it was not – or at least it wasn’t until Kemper took on the project. “My job was to bring warmth and character to a space that was extremely plain,” she recalls. “And to add a bit of razzle-dazzle.”

This she achieved and then some through the strategic use of pattern, color, and form. She furnished the house with pieces that bring a sense of lightness and whimsy to the interiors, with funky rattan chairs from the Citizenry, a pair of Jacques DeNeef slouchy iconic N701 sofas, cylindrical

velvet ottomans, and a travertine-topped coffee table. “We were really trying to convey this idea of beachiness without being too literal,” says Kemper. “We chose pieces and finishes that were relaxed and a bit playful.”

She also maximized the 1,700-square-foot cottage’s inherent attributes such as its high ceilings and capacious rooms. Consider, for example, the fireplace wall in the main sitting area, which she covered in a clotted cream-yellow limewash. “It’s the focal point of the space,” she explains, “and the color added a ton of ambiance. When it was white it was just a giant white wall among other giant white walls. I’m not a big accent-wall person but having one in this room made a lot of sense.”

If the project has one central unifying element, it is color – from the pale pink, lavender, and russet Berber rug that anchors the living area to the floral cushions on the banana-fiber dining chairs. Kemper says she isn’t wild about neutrals but she doesn’t go in for what she calls “super-saturated, superbright” shades either. Instead, she prefers warm hues which she employs in a lovely, painterly way. “I think color can act as a neutral if you scatter it throughout a space so that it blends into the overall scheme of a room. I’m not suggesting using ‘pops of color’ – I hate that phrase – or any explosion of bold color, for that matter, which can feel unsettling, like a visual ‘boom’.”

Thus, in the kitchen, just off the dining area, she painted the island a pale

Hthe FedEx box are included. That’s 365 days a year. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, “seasonals” have their chance to develop their habits, 98 days in 2025. What they may not notice as they rush to their destinations, is the little white building at 34 Pantigo Road, called “The Hook Mill Building” (across from The Hook Mill itself). The structure has an amazingly complex history, as does the three-structure property on which it sits.

Imagine if you arrived at CVS, and it was the Plitt Ford Mercury Dealer and its Service Department, founded by Robert Plitt in 1962 at 38 Pantigo Road after he purchased the dealership from Nick Livingston’s “Willard Motors”, or Brooks Drugs,

The only one of the three buildings there that has remained the same (built in the early 1900’s) is The Hook Mill Building, sold in August 1997 for $187,000, and again in June 1998 for approximately $1.325 million.

Although The Hook Mill Building has stayed structurally the same, the retail space and offices have not. The most famous in its iterations is likely to be the WEHM (East Hampton Music, so named by co-owner Michael Schulhof) Studio, whose operations were visible in the front window, enabling passers-by to witness the live broadcasts of their local radio station. Other investors in the station included minor stakes by Billy Joel, Christie Brinkley and others. WEHM began broadcasting from The Hook Mill Building first floor on its first air date in 1993. The “Sound Track of Your Life” was established by real estate visionary/attorney/property owner Lenny Ackerman and Michael P. “Mickey” Schulhof’, who was at the time Vice Chairman of Sony Corporation worldwide and Chairman of Sony Music Corporation, so mostly Sony Broadcast equipment was used for the electronics.

At the time, Lenny’s law offices were upstairs, on the second floor, but later moved to the Main

Floor in 1995, when WEHM moved on to a house

The retail spaces have had quite a variety of iterations over the years. Lenny reports that his late Wife Judy had a retail baby clothing and accessories shop. Jeff Plitt, son of Plitt Ford Mercury founder and dealer Robert Plitt, remembers Richard Ferrari’s Barber Shop as a tenant, operating as “Richard’s Barber Shop”,

and working at “Tony Turi’s Antique Chair Restoration Shop” in the building. According to Jeff, Tony preferred working on wing chairs and the like.

East Hampton Village is used to changing storefronts, and the story of The Hook Mill Building is a unique one, with historic ties to The Good Old Days. Who knows what is next?

Where Art Meets Appetite

An Insider’s Guide to the City’s Most Artful Tables.

Each December, as the international art world descends upon Miami for Art Basel, the city itself becomes an extension of the fair — a living gallery where creativity, culture, and culinary craft converge. The week’s energy hums beyond the convention halls, spilling into hotel lobbies, oceanfront terraces, and candlelit dining rooms where collectors, curators, and chefs hold court. In a city where food is as much performance as pleasure, these are the tables defining Miami’s most artful season.

CONTESSA

In the Miami Design District, Contessa evokes the romance of Northern Italy with polished ease. From Major Food Group, the restaurant is a study in Italian glamour—velvet seating, marble floors, and gilded light that feels lifted from Milan’s Golden Age. Its menu celebrates timeless indulgence: rigatoni alla bolognese, lobster ravioli, and bistecca alla Fiorentina. The terrace, shaded and sunlit in equal measure, is the perfect respite between gallery visits—where art collectors linger over espresso martinis and truffle pasta, savoring Miami at its most civilized.

Decadence finds its stage at Sexy Fish, the London import that has transformed Brickell into a spectacle of light, color, and aquatic fantasy. Beneath Damien Hirst sculptures and a glowing coral installation, guests dine on dishes as striking as the décor: miso black cod, robata-grilled Wagyu, and a kaleidoscope of sashimi. With its shimmering bar, opulent energy, and theatrical presentation, Sexy Fish isn’t merely a meal—it’s a performance of Miami’s exuberant spirit.

CARBONE

For a taste of timeless indulgence, Carbone remains a Basel essential. Its red-sauce grandeur, all candlelight and swagger, channels mid-century New York with a Miami twist. The menu is unapologetically classic— spicy rigatoni vodka, veal parmesan, Caesar alla ZZ. A reservation here signals membership in a certain unspoken club: one that values the art of dining as much as the art on the walls.

ZZ’S CLUB

Steps away, ZZ’s Club redefines exclusivity. A Major Food Group private dining enclave, its omakase counters and softly lit dining salons draw guests into an atmosphere of rarefied calm. The menu, sourced

from Tokyo’s famed Toyosu Market, unfolds like a symphony of precision—A5 Wagyu, uni toast, and impeccably curated sushi selections. During Basel, the club opens its doors to non-members, granting a fleeting invitation to one of the city’s most discreet

In Coral Gables, Mamey offers a slower, more soulful rhythm. Chef Christian Pasco brings together Caribbean warmth and Southeast Asian spice in dishes that feel both transportive and deeply rooted. The braised boneless short rib pairs perfectly with a passionfruit-infused cocktail on the rooftop terrace, where the city hums quietly below. It’s the kind of hidden gem where Basel insiders come to unwind, savoring conversation as much as cuisine.

LOS FUEGOS BY FRANCIS MALLMANN

At the Faena Hotel Miami Beach, Francis Mallmann transforms open-fire cooking into high art. Los Fuegos is elemental luxury—wood smoke curling beneath palm fronds, Argentinian ribeye seared to perfection, octopus a la plancha kissed with flame. Surrounded by Faena’s art-filled grandeur, the experience is nothing short of cinematic—an embodiment of the city’s magnetic pull between indulgence and artistry.

THE ART OF DINING

During Art Basel, Miami becomes more than a destination—it’s an experience to be tasted as much as seen. Across its most elegant tables, art and appetite converge, offering travelers the rare pleasure of savoring the city in full color: vibrant, sensual, and impossibly alive.

Where the Art World UnWinds once the FAirs Go dArk

As Basel nights stretch into early mornings, Miami’s creative crowd gravitates toward intimate lounges, hotel bars, and candlelit rooftops where art talk lingers over Champagne, mezcal, and late-night playlists. Here’s where to keep the conversation — and the city’s electric pulse — going long after the galleries close.

THE LIVING ROOM AT FAENA HOTEL MIAMI BEACH

A kaleidoscope of crimson velvet, vintage chandeliers, and cinematic allure, Faena’s Living Room remains a magnet for the art world’s insiders. Order a glass of rosé Champagne, sink into a velvet banquette, and watch the city’s most intriguing mix of collectors, curators, and creatives drift through.

Insider tip: Arrive just after midnight, when the crowd turns from hotel guests to the Basel in-crowd.

CASA TUA, SOUTH BEACH

A perennial favorite among international art patrons, Casa Tua feels more private villa than restaurant. Its lush garden, candlelit courtyard, and hushed energy invite lingering conversations and spontaneous toasts.

Insider tip: A discreet nod to the host can turn a quick nightcap into a long, enchanting evening.

THE CHAMPAGNE BAR AT THE SURF CLUB, SURFSIDE

Elegant and timeless, this Thomas Keller outpost channels the glamour of a bygone era. Bartenders in crisp white jackets mix martinis with precision, and the crowd whispers more than it shouts. For those seeking respite from the Basel whirlwind, The Surf Club offers serenity wrapped in sophistication.

Order: The Surf Club Martini — polished, balanced, and unmistakably classic.
