20th July 2015 Dear Students, Parents & Guardians When you return to school in September, you will be embarking upon your GCSE course. All students will be taking the new examinations which are different from those held in previous years with: • • • • • • • •
No tiers of entry A new grading system from 9-1 All students studying for both English Language and English Literature No controlled assessments 100% terminal examination at the end of Y11 A greater emphasis on SpaG A greater emphasis on the study of poetry More challenging texts, some written in the 1800s
It is important that students come back in September ready to meet the challenges of the new course and some preparation is required over the summer: • • • • •
Find out about the life of Charles Dickens Research the plot and characters of ‘A Christmas Carol’; you will be studying this text at the end of the first half term. Read a quality newspaper once a week, focusing on viewpoint and vocabulary Check that you can use the SPaG basics correctly: when to use a new paragraph; when to use an apostrophe; how to use a semicolon and colon Familiarise yourself with key poetic terms
