Primeras dos piezas de la reconstrucción del Magic El jueves pasado se celebró el draft de la NBA 2021. El Magic, como cada año desde 2012, está en reconstrucción, pero nunca la había empezado totalmente desde las cenizas como ahora. Básicamente apretaron el botón de autodestrucción, y las dos salidas tempranas en playoffs con récord total de 2-8 (únicos partidos en playoffs en 9 años) no fueron suficientes para mantener a la plantilla y al entrenador Steve Clifford. Más temprano este año mandaron lejos a Vucevic, Fournier, Aaron Gordon y demás, y decidieron una vez más comenzar desde cero. Toda la atención se centraba entonces en el draft y la posibilidad de la selección global #1. Sin embargo, ni la suerte estuvo del lado del Magic ya que cayeron al peor lugar posible: el quinto.
“buzzer beater”, ganador de último minuto ante UCLA, y por ser sobrino de Terrell Suggs, jugador salón de la fama de la NFL. Después (y estoy seguro que los ejecutivos de Orlando prestaron atención durante el March Madness) tomaron con la octava selección global a Franz Wagner de Michigan, otro de los más destacados en el torneo colegial. El alero alemán de 19 años era, igual que Suggs, el mejor jugador disponible en ese momento. Suggs y Wagner son las primeras 2 piezas de la larga reconstrucción que se le ha encargado al arquitecto Jamahl Mosley, quién está por primera vez en su vida dirigiendo a un equipo de NBA.
Pero la noche del jueves 29, considerándolo todo, me atrevo a decir que pasó lo mejor que podía pasarle al Magic. Tomaron, con la selección #5, a la superestrella de Gonzaga: Jalen Suggs, para muchos el mejor guardia de este draft y que le cayó a las manos al Magic.
Si le sumamos que el Magic -directiva y afición- saben ser pacientes y que, tras otra reconstrucción más, se espera que esta sí sea la buena mientras se toman su tiempo, y esperando por supuesto la salud y el progreso de jugadores como Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony y Mo Bamba, parece que el Magic tiene una buena base sobre la cual construir su futuro, aunque este tome algunos años en llegar.
Fue la pieza central del equipo que llegó invicto a la final por el título nacional y que, haberla perdido, probablemente afectó -para fortuna del Magicsus chances en el draft. Se hizo famoso por aquel triple

The Magic, like every year since 2012, are undergoing a reconstruction, but they had never started it completely from the ashes like this one. They basically hit the self-destruct button, and the two early playoff exits with a 2-8 overall record (their only playoff games in 9 years) weren't enough to keep the squad and coach Steve Clifford around. Earlier this year they sent Vucevic, Fournier, Aaron Gordon and others away, and decided once again to start from scratch. All attention was then focused on the draft and the possibility of the #1 overall pick. However, not even luck was on the Magic's side as they fell to the worst possible place: fifth. But on the night of Thursday the 29th, all things considered, I dare say that the best thing that could happen to the Magic, did. They took, with the #5 pick, Gonzaga's superstar: Jalen Suggs, for many the best guard in this draft and who just fell into the Magic’s hands. He was the centerpiece of the team that reached the finals for the national title while undefeated and, having lost it, probably affected -to the Magic's fortune- his chances in the draft. He

Then (and I'm sure Orlando executives paid attention during March Madness) they took, with the eighth overall pick, Franz Wagner from Michigan, another one of the stars in this year’s college tournament. The 19-year-old German small forward was, like Suggs, the best player available at the time. Suggs and Wagner are the first 2 pieces of the long reconstruction that has been commissioned to the architect Jamahl Mosley, who is, for the first time in his life, managing an NBA team. If we add that the Magic -both management and fans- know how to be patient and that, after another reconstruction, this one’s expected to be the good one as long as they take their time, and of course hoping for the health and progress of players like Markelle Fultz , Cole Anthony and Mo Bamba, it seems the Magic has a good foundation on which to build their future, even if it takes a few years for it to come. Suggs and Wagner: welcome to Orlando, your new home. You will be the two pieces on which we all hope a contender will be built which in a few years manages to lift the Larry O'Brien trophy.
