Love comes in many forms

Love comes in many forms and manifests in different ways. It can be romantic, it can be familial, it can be spiritual. It can be gallant displays and grand sacrifices, but more often than not, it’s little things– gestures that not everyone might notice or even understand, but when coming from the right person, can mean the world. To me, love starts with a simple ‘thinking of you’ text from my mother, coffee from a friend when I’m having a bad day, or just remembering a detail someone mentions in a passing conversation– simple things that are easy to act on but speak volumes for how much we care, because it’s those little things that add up. This month’s issue of Yorba Linda City Lifestyle is themed around Love Local– a similar concept in the sense that it feels so easy to overlook, but is vital to maintaining our cities’ sense of community. It’s easy to forget that behind the buildings and elaborate storefronts, local businesses are composed of individuals– dedicated, passionate individuals who contribute to their city in their own special ways. Individuals whose hearts are expressed in the services they provide, and the quality with which they provide them.

This issue spotlights several local businesses that exemplify care, craftsmanship, and commitment to the community. United Medical Doctors offer personalized, professional healthcare, including heart health and colon cancer care. Arbor Expertise delivers expert residential and commercial tree care services throughout Orange County, helping properties stay healthy and beautiful. White’s Draperies and More provides custom window treatments—from elegant drapes to shutters and blinds—designed to elevate any space. Rounding out the feature, MDS Med Spa offers proven CoolSculpting services with noticeable, lasting results, helping clients look and feel their best.

This February, be encouraged when you’re thinking about your Valentine’s Day plans, to give back to the community, and Love Local.

MDS EFFECTIVELY UTILIZES ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY, HIGHLY EXPERIENCED PROVIDERS, AND THOROUGH, CUSTOMIZED TREATMENT PLANS THAT ENHANCE EACH PATIENT’S UNIQUE NATURAL BEAUTY

PERSONALIZED BEAUTY, ELEVATED RESULTS

When you look good, you feel good. For the past decade, MDS Medical Spa has helped patients achieve radiant results by redefining personalized aesthetic care.

What began in 2015 at the first MDS location in Woodland Hills grew with the opening of a second office in Brea in 2017, allowing the talented team to reach even more patients with a highly personalized approach.

“MDS was created from a desire to offer resultsdriven aesthetic care without sacrificing personalization or integrity. The inspiration came from witnessing too many patients being treated with onesize-fits-all solutions, particularly in body sculpting and facial rejuvenation. We wanted to build a space where treatments are thoughtfully selected, layered, and tailored to the individual—not trends.”

This commitment to individualized care informs every decision made at MDS.

“What sets MDS apart is our holistic, consultative approach. In body sculpting, we don’t rely on a single modality. We combine technologies like Emsculpt, CoolSculpting, and regenerative treatments to address fat reduction, muscle tone, and skin quality together, creating balanced, natural-looking results.”

“That same philosophy extends to the face. Whether it’s injectables, laser treatments, skin tightening, or advanced skincare, we focus on structure, skin health, and long-term rejuvenation, not overcorrection. Our goal is to enhance—not change—our patients’ features while supporting confidence at every stage.”

Focusing on balance and customized treatment extends to every facet of MDS’s practice—results that are evident in their loyal client base.

“MDS WAS CREATED FROM A DESIRE TO OFFER RESULTS-DRIVEN AESTHETIC CARE WITHOUT SACRIFICING PERSONALIZATION OR INTEGRITY.”

“At MDS, aesthetics is not about quick fixes. It’s about intentional treatment planning, education, and outcomes that feel authentic to each patient, from head to toe.”

One way in which MDS provides its patients with effective, lasting results is through its innovative CoolSculpting treatments, performed by highly trained providers with extensive clinical experience.

“Our CoolSculpting Master has over 13 years of hands-on experience and advanced, specialized training in body contouring. In addition, our nurses each have over 10 years of experience and are highly skilled in injectables and laser technologies, bringing a deep understanding of anatomy, safety, and aesthetic outcomes. This combined expertise allows us to deliver customized treatment plans with precision, consistency, and a strong focus on patient safety and results.”

MDS prioritizes honest conversations to ensure patient expectations are aligned with realistic outcomes.

“One of the biggest misconceptions clients have before trying CoolSculpting is that it is a weight-loss solution or that results are immediate. CoolSculpting is designed for targeted fat reduction and body contouring,

not overall weight loss. Another common misconception is that it will look unnatural or uneven. When performed by experienced providers who understand anatomy, proper applicator placement, and treatment planning, results are gradual, natural-looking, and enhance the body’s existing shape rather than changing it dramatically.”

Crafting a treatment plan begins by assessing each client’s needs, where they discuss factors like their goals, lifestyle, and anatomy.

MDS Medical Spa Team
“AT MDS, AESTHETICS IS NOT ABOUT QUICK FIXES. IT’S ABOUT INTENTIONAL TREATMENT PLANNING, EDUCATION, AND OUTCOMES THAT FEEL AUTHENTIC TO EACH PATIENT, FROM HEAD TO TOE,” SAYS MDS MEDICAL SPA

“We place a strong emphasis on education and transparency from the very first consultation. We take time to explain how results develop, what kind of improvement to expect, and whether a treatment is best used alone or as part of a combination plan. By using before-and-after examples, treatment timelines, and open dialogue, we ensure clients feel informed, confident, and aligned with achievable outcomes before moving forward.”

As the first medical spa to open in Brea, MDS helped set the standard for advanced aesthetic care in the community. They have since earned several notable recognitions over the years, including Best of Business Rate for 2025, reflecting their commitment to patient satisfaction and consistent results.

“We are also Diamond Partners with Allergan Advantage, placing us among the top-performing practices nationwide for injectables, a Top 10 provider for Emsculpt, and ranked within the

Top 100 CoolSculpting providers in the nation, highlighting our expertise in both facial and body treatments.”

These achievements reflect a devotion to growth that continues to flourish.

“Our practice has evolved alongside both advances in aesthetic technology and changing client expectations. We prioritize staying current by ensuring our providers regularly attend advanced trainings and certifications, and by investing in the latest machines and laser technologies as they become available. As client needs have shifted, we’ve seen a strong move toward more natural, subtle results. In response, our approach emphasizes personalization, balance, and enhancement rather than overcorrection, allowing us to deliver results that feel modern, refined, and aligned with each client’s individual goals.”

THEIR DEDICATION TO CARE, EARLY DETECTION, AND OUTREACH REFLECTS A TRUE COMMITMENT TO LOCAL RESIDENTS.

Featuring Dr. Sumit Khandhar, Interventional Cardiologist & Vein Specialist; Dr. Marco Paez, Dr. Scott Lee, and Dr. Christina Steinhauser, Gastroenterology & Hepatology

HEART HEALTH — United Cardiology

(Dr. Sumit Khandhar)

1. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON HEART-RELATED HEALTH CONCERNS YOU OBSERVE IN OUR COMMUNITY?

“We frequently see high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and early coronary artery disease—conditions that often develop silently over many years. Many patients are also navigating concerns related to diabetes, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles, all of which significantly increase cardiovascular risk.”

2. HOW CAN RESIDENTS TAKE SIMPLE STEPS AT HOME TO IMPROVE OR MAINTAIN HEART HEALTH?

“Small, consistent habits make the biggest difference: taking daily walks, choosing whole foods over processed meals, limiting salt and sugar, getting adequate sleep, managing stress, and staying up to date with routine checkups. Even 20–30 minutes of daily movement can measurably improve cardiovascular health.”

3. WHAT ARE A FEW EARLY WARNING SIGNS PEOPLE SHOULD NEVER IGNORE?

“Chest pressure, shortness of breath with minimal activity, unexplained fatigue, palpitations, swelling in the legs, and dizziness are all signals to seek

care immediately. Any sudden change in your baseline health is worth evaluating— early intervention saves lives.”

4. HOW DOES UNITED MEDICAL DOCTORS HELP PATIENTS WITH PREVENTIVE CARE, SCREENINGS, AND EDUCATION FOR HEART HEALTH?

“We take a proactive approach through comprehensive risk assessments, advanced diagnostic testing, routine lab monitoring, and individualized treatment plans. We also work closely with patients on lifestyle coaching, medication education, and long-term wellness strategies.”

5. ARE THERE ANY NEW TREATMENTS, TECHNOLOGIES, OR PROGRAMS A VAILABLE THROUGH YOUR CLINIC THAT SUPPORT BETTER CARDIAC OUTCOMES?

“We offer state-of-the-art imaging, minimally invasive interventional procedures, and updated treatment options for coronary artery disease and venous disorders. Our clinic also uses modern monitoring tools—including wearable and remote technologies—to track heart rhythms and detect issues early.”

6. HOW DOES EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING, STRESS MANAGEMENT, OR LIFESTYLE FACTOR INTO OVERALL HEART HEALTH?

“Heart health is deeply connected to mental and emotional wellness. Chronic stress increases inflammation, blood pressure, and strain on the cardiovascular system. Healthy eating, regular movement, restorative sleep, and stress-reducing practices— such as mindfulness or time outdoors—are just as important as medications.”

7. WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH LOCAL RESIDENTS DURING HEART HEALTH MONTH?

“Your heart is your most vital organ— take time to care for it. Prevention is powerful, and local healthcare providers like our team at United Cardiology are here to support you close to home. Don’t wait for symptoms; invest in your health today so you can enjoy life fully for years to come.”

Dr. Khandhar

COLON CANCER AWARENESS — United Gastroenterologists

(Dr. Paez, Dr. Lee, Dr. Steinhauser)

8. WHY IS COLON CANCER AWARENESS SO IMPORTANT FOR OUR COMMUNITY RIGHT NOW?

“Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet rates are rising in adults under 50. Increasing awareness helps ensure residents understand the importance of early detection and the lifesaving impact of screening.”

9. AT WHAT AGE SHOULD PEOPLE BEGIN SCREENINGS, AND HOW HAVE RECOMMENDATIONS CHANGED?

“Most people should begin screening at age 45, earlier than previous recommendations of 50. Those with family history or higher-risk factors may need to start even sooner. The shift reflects national data showing earlier onset of colorectal disease.”

10. WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MYTHS OR FEARS ABOUT COLONOSCOPIES YOU’D LIKE TO CLEAR UP?

“Many think the procedure is painful or embarrassing—it’s neither. Colonoscopies are performed under sedation, take about 15-20 minutes, and allow us to remove precancerous polyps before they ever become dangerous. The preparation is easier than it used to be, and the peace of mind is invaluable.”

11. HOW DOES EARLY DETECTION IMPROVE OUTCOMES, AND WHAT PREVENTIVE OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE LOCALLY?

“When colon cancer is caught early, it is highly treatable and often curable. Our team offers full-spectrum screening options—including colonoscopy and noninvasive tests—right here in the community, so patients don’t have to travel far for quality care.”

12. ARE THERE LIFESTYLE HABITS THAT CAN HELP LOWER THE RISK OF COLON CANCER?

“Absolutely. A diet rich in fiber, fruits, and vegetables, regular exercise, limiting red or processed meats, avoiding tobacco, and maintaining a healthy weight can all reduce the risk.”

13. HOW DOES UNITED MEDICAL DOCTORS MAKE SCREENING MORE APPROACHABLE AND ACCESSIBLE?

“We prioritize convenience, education, and patient comfort. Our scheduling is flexible, we walk patients through every step, and our team uses gentle, patient-centered care to make the experience as stress-free as possible.”

14. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN PUTTING OFF GETTING SCREENED?

“Your health is worth the appointment. Screening now can prevent a serious diagnosis later. A colonoscopy is a short moment in your life that can extend your life—don’t delay it.”

Dr. Paez and MA

SUPPORT LOCAL / COMMUNITY CONNECTION

15. HOW DOES UNITED MEDICAL DOCTORS’ PRESENCE IN THE COMMUNITY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF LOCAL FAMILIES?

“By bringing high-quality specialty care close to home, we reduce barriers and keep families healthier. We build trusted, long-term relationships with patients, making it easier for them to get the care they need without delay.”

16. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR RESIDENTS TO “SUPPORT LOCAL” WHEN CHOOSING HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS?

“Local providers understand this community—its culture, its needs, and its families. When you choose local care, you strengthen community health resources and ensure they remain available for future generations.”

17. HOW DOES YOUR TEAM COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL PHYSICIANS, HOSPITALS, OR WELLNESS ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE CARE?

“We work together with primary care physicians, local hospitals, and wellness centers to coordinate seamless, integrated care. Collaboration ensures

patients receive timely referrals, consistent communication, and the right support at every stage.”

18. WHAT DOES COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOUR CLINIC AND STAFF?

“Community means connection, trust, and service. We live and work alongside the people we care for, and we take pride in being a dependable resource for the residents of Yorba Linda and surrounding areas.”

19. DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING EVENTS, INITIATIVES, OR OUTREACH PROGRAMS TIED TO HEART HEALTH OR COLON CANCER AWARENESS?

“Yes—our teams regularly participate in awareness campaigns, educational talks, and local health events throughout Heart Health Month and Colon Cancer Awareness Month. We encourage residents to follow our clinic updates for more details.”

20. WHAT FINAL MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH LIFESTYLE READERS ABOUT CARING FOR THEIR HEALTH—AND THEIR HOMETOWN— IN 2026?

“Your health is your greatest investment, and your community is your greatest support. Prioritize preventive care, stay informed, and don’t hesitate to reach out to local experts who are here to help you thrive. Together, we can build a healthier, stronger Yorba Linda.”

WHITE’S DRAPERIES: “TRUST AND EXCELLENCE”

Since the 1950s, local business White’s Draperies and More has delivered experience and quality products to customers across Southern California

In the ever-changing world of business, many come and go, but a few true gems endure across generations. White’s Draperies and More in Placentia is one business that has established a longstanding local legacy.

White's Draperies & More Team

“As a family business started in the late 1950s by my parents, Walter and Phyllis, I am very proud that we are still serving the community,” says Kevin White.

“We have been privileged to serve many families for multiple generations.”

Kevin takes pride in the network of longtime clients the business has cultivated over the years.

“I am most proud of being called repeatedly to assist clients with their window covering needs, followed closely by the honor of being referred to clients’ family and friends. This means they trust us to serve their friends and family properly.”

Staying ahead of the latest industry trends is central to Kevin’s approach, especially as technology continues to evolve.

“Motorization is very popular today, as it has evolved to allow the customer to use the internet to control the shades from anywhere there is an internet connection. Shades can also be programmed to raise and lower on a time schedule of their choosing.”

Selecting the right window treatments involves more than just the latest technology. Understanding each client’s unique needs is crucial to finding the perfect solution.

“One of the biggest challenges someone faces when selecting the proper window coverings is information. It is very important for us to know what the client wants the covering to do, not just what they want. People need to know the positives and drawbacks to each product before selecting a treatment.”

That’s where their expertise comes into play.

“We have the value of experience. Experience is only gained through time. The benefit of seeing so many homes with the unique needs and desires of the customer allows us to give a new client information to help them in selecting the product(s) that will give them the best value for their dollar.”

Kevin’s close-knit team leads the client through each step of the process.

“The advantage of using our company is that we have the knowledge and experience to walk with a client

“We have been assisting customers for over 70 years. Our longevity speaks to our commitment to customer service for our clients.”

through the many choices of shades, shutters, fabrics, and hardware to help them select what will provide them with a treatment that meets their needs and budget.”

“Because we have a showroom, a client can come to our store and actually see what a product will do. They can see the different shades and fabrics to see the true color, not an image on a computer screen. After selecting the various materials or shades they like, we can then go to their home to get proper measurements and design ideas for an estimate.”

No detail of the job goes unplanned with Kevin’s team.

“When we do the measuring, we are responsible for the proper sizes, not the

client doing all of this on their own. The estimate will include all the materials, hardware, manufacturing, and installation needed to complete the job. If needed, we can also take down the current window coverings.”

White’s Draperies and More is a cut above the rest when it comes to customer satisfaction and exceptional results. “Why choose us? Experience and knowledge, quality, and a fair price for a quality product,” he says. “We have been assisting customers for over 70 years. Our longevity speaks to our commitment to customer service for our clients.”

ARTICLE BY SALEH SANCHEZ

team provides expert arborist guidance, maintenance planning, and tree care practices for the good of the local community

Cultivating Healthier Trees Through Expert Care

Jeff Harvey’s

In Southern California, where neighborhoods are stitched together by canopies of lush, green trees, caring for the landscape is an investment in the community.

Arbor Expertise’s Lead Arborist, Jeff Harvey, began his career high in the branches as a tree climber, and has since grown that passion into a business dedicated to preserving the health and beauty of trees throughout the region.

As Jeff started learning more about various species of trees, their characteristics, and the proper way to care for them, his knowledge of effective landscaping techniques also flourished.

Jeff’s drive to continually expand his expertise shaped his professional approach and the culture of his team, reinforcing the idea that great tree care begins with knowledge and accountability.

“The number one value I hold in my industry is quality tree work,” explains Jeff, who believes healthy trees are among a property’s most valuable assets.

BASKING IN THE BENEFITS OF TREES

“There is a holistic approach to managing any living species. As society has evolved to understand the importance of taking care of our health and the environment around us."

Jeff notes that a strategically planted tree, once matured, could reduce the temperature by 10 degrees in the summer.

“On a hot summer day, simply stand directly in the sun or under a tree to realize the marvelous effects trees have on our environment.”

TREE TRIMMER VS. ARBORIST

What’s the difference between a tree trimmer and a Certified Arborist?

According to Jeff, tree trimmers indiscriminately cut foliage off the tree in many cases.

A Certified Arborist knows why and when to cut any foliage. They will explain

“There is a holistic approach to managing any living species. Society has evolved to understand the importance of taking care of our health and the environment around us.”

proper timing for trimming and what is going to be cut off. Arborists will be able to identify other unhealthy or hazardous trees on the property. They will recommend any fertilization, irrigation adjustment, and treatment of pests that will cause damage that were observed while on site.

In a broader sense, an arborist is a trained professional specializing in the ART and SCIENCE of planting, maintaining, and studying individual trees, shrubs, and other woody plants for their health and longevity.

Arborists offer services ranging from pruning and pest control to risk assessment and removal, going beyond basic landscaping by focusing on deep tree biology and long-term care.

They are essentially "tree doctors,” diagnosing issues and ensuring trees thrive, instead of focusing solely on their appearance.

TIPS FOR TREE AND LANDSCAPING CARE

“One of the major components of managing properties starts with overall appearance,” says Jeff.

Curb appeal and pride of ownership are the first things people see when arriving at your property.

Jeff advises that the optimal time for tree trimming is in the fall, after the summer heat has subsided, but prior to the Santa Ana winds arrive.

“The tree's metabolism slows during the fall and winter months when sunlight is less. ‘Spring, however, is equally important. Spring tune-ups should also be a part of your landscaping plan. This is an

ideal time to put new plants in the ground, fertilize, mulch planter beds, and increase irrigation for the summer months,” he says.

“This allows the plants time to get established, so they have roots and are flourishing during the summer months, when you get the most use of your yard.”

Jeff states that mulching is the best technique for adding nutrients back into the soil, curbing weed growth, and increasing irrigation efficiency.

When you’re ready to work with an arborist, homeowners can expect a 2–5-year maintenance plan outlining tree species, current health, potential risks, and long-term care strategies.

As trees mature or compete for resources, selective removal may be recommended to protect the overall landscape.

Having a plan in place provides the homeowner with adequate time to research and budget for any maintenance or upgrades. A thoughtful approach increases both the safety and aesthetic value of the property.

“A trimming regimen, outline for possible removals, treatment, and timing, and any other observable areas in need of upgrades that will increase the aesthetic value and appearance of the property should be outlined in the plan,” he adds.

Are you ready to transform your property’s landscape into an aesthetically appealing backdrop? Arbor expertise offers knowledgeable guidance and long-term solutions rooted in science and stewardship.

Take in sweeping alpine views

DIS COVER THE VALAIS REGION OF SWITZERLAND, WHERE ALPINE TRAILS, THERMAL SPRINGS, AND LOCAL TRADITIONS CREATE RESTORATIVE TRAVEL.

AN ALPINE ESCAPE

AN ALPINE ADVENTURE IN ALETSCH ARENA

An easy train ride from Zurich lands visitors in the Aletsch Arena, a high-alpine region on the south side of the Bernese Alps, home to three villages: Riederalp, Bettmeralp, and Fiescheralp. Known for its ski slopes in winter and hiking in summer, the area is entirely car-free, making walking and local buses the main modes of transportation through its quaint chalet-lined streets.

One of the main attractions of the ski-in/ski-out area is the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 12-mile glacier is visible from several vantage points, shaping every experience in the area.

In Switzerland’s Valais region, wellness and adventure are always part of the same itinerary. Morning could bring a high-alpine hike, afternoon a soak in mineral-rich springs, and evening a table set with traditional cuisine, always including delicious wine and cheese. For travelers, the best part will be finding the perfect balance between exploring the outdoors and relaxing with wellness-infused activities in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

WHERE TO STAY

Located in the heart of Bettmeralp, Hotel Panorama provides no-fuss accommodations steps away from the picturesque Chapel Maria Zum Schnee. The hotel’s restaurant offers delicious regional cuisine, including raclette paired with Swiss wine. A good bottle of Pinot Noir or Gamay is also easy to come by because the Valais region of Switzerland is one of the largest wine-producing areas in the country, with vineyards dotting the steep slopes of the Rhône Valley. In addition to wine and cheese, eating cholera, a covered vegetable pie invented in the region during the cholera epidemic, is a must.

WHAT TO DO

Begin at Viewpoint Moosfluh, the closest and lowest vantage point of the Aletsch Glacier. From there, trailheads lead to Villa Cassel, once the home of a British financier and now a museum focused on history and conservation. The hike passes through a thousand-year-old forest with views of both the glacier and the Matterhorn.

Walk over Goms Bridge, a nearly 1,000-foot-long suspension bridge that connects two hiking areas over the Rhône River. For a final look at the majestic glacier, take the cable car to Viewpoint Eggishorn. At nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Jungfraujoch, or the “Top of Europe,” and the most comprehensive view of the Aletsch Glacier.

In 2023, Dr. Oliak and Allison Mollet, PA-C, founded MD Total Wellness to offer GLP-1 medication in combination with a medically supervised weight loss program, helping patients lose weight safely and sustainably –without surgery.

Their approach promotes individualized patient care and long-term success through comprehensive support, including personalized medication dosing, nutrition, and lifestyle guidance focused on preventing muscle loss and maintenance tools.

MD Total Wellness tracks body composition changes using advanced body scanning and provides personalized strategies for tapering or discontinuing medication.

Their services are geared toward patients who haven’t been able to lose (or sustain) weight loss without medication, post-bariatric surgery patients with weight regain or challenges, and women in menopause suffering from related metabolic changes.

Potential candidates are encouraged to establish healthy dietary and lifestyle habits.

“In my 20 years’ experience, I’ve found that weight loss makes pretty much everything better–medical issues, mobility, joint pain, and mental health. The #1 result clients are most excited about is the ability to become more engaged and active with their kids, grandkids, and families.”

The MD Total Wellness team equips patients with the necessary resources for long-term success.

“We help patients to lose weight in a healthy way,” says Dr. Oliak.

Weight-loss medications allow for more realistic results than what can be offered by a diet program alone.

“They target the body’s natural hunger control pathways and are very effective at reducing hunger and cravings. We focus on developing sustainable habits, not overly-restrictive, rigid, fad diets that don’t work long term.”

Establishing transparent and genuine patient relationships builds trust that ultimately elevates the patient care experience.

“We love building genuine relationships with our patients and the wider community. Getting to know you, understanding your goals, and walking with you in your weight loss journey is what drives us. That’s why we focus on our patients’ success above all else.”
