Love Local
At Chalkfest this past June, we set up a booth with a simple question: Why do you love Maple Grove? People grabbed Post-it notes and started writing. One read, “Big city, small town feel.” A little later, someone else walked up, paused, and placed another note directly underneath it. One word. “This.” I laughed. It turned out they were married. They had come by at different times and had no idea the other had already written anything. Same thought. Same feeling. Different moment.

That small, unplanned moment stuck with me because it captured something that is hard to manufacture and impossible to fake. It is the feeling of belonging. The kind that shows up when neighbors care, businesses support one another, and community is something you participate in, not just talk about. This Love Local issue is about that feeling. The people, places, and quiet moments that give Maple Grove its heart. The ones that make you stop, smile, and think, “Yeah. This.”

city scene

1-7: On Thanksgiving morning, Maple Grove residents traded pajamas for running shoes at the annual Turkey Trot, turning a chilly start into a warm display of community spirit. Families, friends, strollers, and four-legged companions filled the course, proving the event is as much about togetherness as it is about miles logged. Laughter, festive outfits, and high fives set the tone as runners and walkers of all ages crossed the finish line, earning a little extra room for a guilt-free Thanksgiving feast. The Maple Grove Turkey Trot once again delivered energy, smiles, and a reminder of what makes this community special. See you next year!

8-14: The I-94 West Chamber Holiday Luncheon, held on December 9, brought local leaders together in a spirit of giving. The event raised more than $3,000 and collected 128 pounds of toys for CROSS Services, making a meaningful impact for families across the community this holiday season. www.crossservices.org

15-21: The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes came alive on December 6th during Santa at The Shoppes, a festive afternoon filled with holiday cheer and community spirit. Families gathered to enjoy carolers, wagon rides, kids’ activities, a Christmas market, delicious food, shopping, twinkling lights, and Santa himself roaming the property for visits. Guests warmed up at the OMNI Brewery Warming House, enjoyed treats from The Look Out Food Truck, snapped photos at free Elfie Selfie Stations, and shopped local vendors. Live performances added energy throughout the afternoon, while toy donations supported CROSS Services. Our publisher, Tim, had a blast participating as Frosty and fully embracing the joyful holiday spirit.

A FRESH IDEA TAKES ROOT

Freshly Leaf is where tea becomes art, stories unfold, and creative events bring people together.

If your drink can change colors, spark conversation, and taste amazing, then you are probably at Freshly Leaf. Since opening its doors in Maple Grove, Freshly Leaf has become known for blending creativity, culture, and flavor into an experience that feels both joyful and intentional.
Freshly Leaf began in 2021 with its first location in Blaine, built on a clear and thoughtful vision. As owners Angie and Minh explain, the shop was “built on a dream to create a space where tea and coffee could be both expressive and grounding.” From the beginning, the goal extended beyond serving beverages. Angie envisioned a place where design, storytelling, and connection could exist alongside carefully crafted drinks.
The name Freshly Leaf reflects that philosophy. Freshly speaks to more than ingredients. It represents new ideas, creativity, and perspective, while Leaf symbolizes growth and renewal. Together, they mirror the brand’s journey from a single shop into a growing presence rooted in collaboration and intentional experiences.
Angie & Minh Huynh
CHOOSING A PLACE TO GROW
When it came time to expand, the next chapter needed to align with that original vision. Angie describes the community as “a city where creativity meets community—vibrant, family-friendly, and deeply supportive of small businesses.” That sense of openness and connection made it the right environment to continue growing Freshly Leaf’s story.
Since opening, the shop has become known for themed cup sleeve events, pop-up collaborations with fellow small businesses like Poppy & Violet, Waan Bakery, Ao Dai Boutiques MN, and many more. These experiences transform a café visit into something more interactive and celebratory. As Angie puts it, “It’s the kind of place where a drink becomes a memory, and a pop-up turns into a celebration.”
TEA AS A CANVAS
While Freshly Leaf began with a strong focus on quality tea, its purpose quickly expanded. The shop evolved into a creative hub that blends seasonal campaigns, visual branding, and community engagement.
At the heart of it all is an intentional approach to craft. “We treat tea as a canvas,” Angie says. That philosophy is evident in every drink, from ingredient selection to presentation. The menu balances tradition and creativity, offering everything from jasmine green tea and oolong tea to playful blends, herbal infusions, and Vietnamese coffee. Each option is designed to feel approachable while still inviting curiosity and exploration.
SIGNATURE DRINKS AND STORYTELLING
Freshly Leaf’s menu has earned a loyal following, thanks to drinks that are as expressive as they are flavorful. Fan favorites include the Monster Brown Sugar, the Supreme Signature, and the color-shifting Butterfly Pea Milk Tea. The Hawaii Paradise offers a tropical escape, while Vietnamese Egg Coffee delivers a rich, nostalgic experience rooted in tradition.
These drinks often anchor seasonal campaigns and collaborative events, reinforcing the idea that beverages at Freshly Leaf are part of a larger story. They are designed not just to be enjoyed, but to be experienced, photographed, and shared.
BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER
Beyond the menu, Freshly Leaf’s atmosphere plays a central role in its success. The space is warm, whimsical, and welcoming, encouraging guests to linger. Families attend themed events, creatives gather for pop-ups, and collaborations bring new energy into the shop.
Looking ahead, Freshly Leaf plans to continue growing through partnerships and shared experiences, both within the shop and beyond its walls. Whether hosting events or popping up in new spaces, the focus remains on creativity, connection, and storytelling. At Freshly Leaf, every cup tells a story, and every visit feels intentionally made.

CELEBRATING THE HEART OF MAPLE GROVE

Maple Grove is more than a city! It’s a community where people are seen, heard, and supported. From local businesses to parks, events, and family traditions, the heartbeat of this city is shaped by the people who love it. Here are some of the residents who embody the spirit of Maple Grove and the values that make it a special place to call home.
ARTICLE BY AMY GALE MALONEY

JULIE DANIELSON
“We are grateful to Maple Grove because it’s awesome that they provide a place where my daughter, who is in a special needs chair, can be outside and participate.”
Julie is a devoted mother and advocate, volunteering with the Bob’s Lookout Foundation and hosting National Night Out events. She cherishes watching her non-verbal, autistic teenage daughter, Sienna, experience joy in public spaces.
Maple Grove gives Julie and Sienna the freedom to participate fully, from feeding fish at the pond to enjoying open-air concerts. The city represents inclusion, care, and quiet courage, showing that community is about making space for everyone.
SPECIAL MOM & DAUGHTER SPOT:
Town Green at the Maple Grove Library - their open-air haven for music, calm, and moments that let Sienna shine.

TWILA JOHNSON
“Maple Grove has shaped me, lifted me, and trusted me to help lead.”
Twila is a natural connector, passionate about bringing people together and amplifying voices. She often engages with locals at 3 Squares, her “unofficial office,” and recently launched the Conversations That Count event series. They are gatherings designed to strengthen connections and highlight women’s stories.
For Twila, Maple Grove’s heartbeat is in its local businesses that know your name, parks buzzing with families, and creative events like Chalkfest. She loves that the city provides spaces where people can belong and thrive.
FAVORITE COMMUNITY SPOT:

LORI AND GREG BUNCE
“We love the Maple Grove parade, and our theater participates every year!”
Lori and Greg are the founders of Bunce Performing Arts, a family-run theater that began as a backyard labor of love. Their mission has always been to give kids a safe, faith-centered space in which to explore the arts. Over nearly twenty years, the theater has grown into a beloved tradition in Maple Grove, partnering with churches, summer events, and local celebrations.
The Bunces see Maple Grove as a place where creativity is embraced, friendships are nurtured, and community thrives through shared experiences.
FAVORITE FAMILY FEAST:
Angeno’s Pizza, where celebrations, good grades, and family stories took shape over root beer and a slice.

CARL AND REBECCA GEPHARDT
“As parents to middle-schoolers, we appreciate the parks and the number of activities to keep them entertained and active.”
Carl and Rebecca value family-friendly spaces and opportunities for their children to grow. They enjoy walking trails around Fish Lake with their dog and connecting with neighbors over local shops and restaurants. Both are active in giving back: Carl serves on the CROSS Services board, and Rebecca on the ATD Twin Cities board.
For the Gebhardts, Maple Grove is a place that grounds, energizes, and connects their family through clubs, church, and kids’ activities. They appreciate the way community and connections thrive here.
FAVORITE HOT SPOTS:

CHERYL SMYTHE
“Every fall, I feel like I’m driving through a painting. Maple Grove is just that beautiful.”
Cheryl has lived in Maple Grove for over a decade and works at A Chance To Grow. She enjoys exploring parks like Fish Lake Park, connecting with friends through her daughter’s activities, and participating in city-wide events.
For Cheryl, Maple Grove is not just scenic, it’s a community full of care, connection, and celebration. Events like Chalkfest highlight the city’s creativity and the spirit of neighbors coming together.
FAVORITE COMMUNITY EVENT:
Maple Grove Chalk Fest - a vibrant gathering where neighbors celebrate creativity and community.

KEN KUMPULA
“After more than 30 years here, I feel so connected to Maple Grove’s heartbeat that the idea of leaving is honestly unnerving.”
Ken is an IT professional, longtime resident, and 25-year member of the Maple Grove Lions. He has watched Maple Grove grow into the vibrant, lively community it is today. Ken loves the city’s energy, local businesses, and welcoming spirit—but also sees opportunity to engage untapped neighbors who could enrich the community further. He’s committed to helping make those connections possible.
FAVORITE SPOTS:
The Lookout - “like Cheers, but real,” and Rockin’ the Grove, a must-attend community event.
From parks and trails to local businesses and creative events, these residents show what makes Maple Grove a city full of heart. Their stories reflect connection, generosity, and the shared values that make this community thrive.

Where Local Exper tise Meets Proven

Take in sweeping alpine views

DIS COVER THE VALAIS REGION OF SWITZERLAND, WHERE ALPINE TRAILS, THERMAL SPRINGS, AND LOCAL TRADITIONS CREATE RESTORATIVE TRAVEL.
AN ALPINE ESCAPE
AN ALPINE ADVENTURE IN ALETSCH ARENA
An easy train ride from Zurich lands visitors in the Aletsch Arena, a high-alpine region on the south side of the Bernese Alps, home to three villages: Riederalp, Bettmeralp, and Fiescheralp. Known for its ski slopes in winter and hiking in summer, the area is entirely car-free, making walking and local buses the main modes of transportation through its quaint chalet-lined streets.
One of the main attractions of the ski-in/ski-out area is the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 12-mile glacier is visible from several vantage points, shaping every experience in the area.

ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA
In Switzerland’s Valais region, wellness and adventure are always part of the same itinerary. Morning could bring a high-alpine hike, afternoon a soak in mineral-rich springs, and evening a table set with traditional cuisine, always including delicious wine and cheese. For travelers, the best part will be finding the perfect balance between exploring the outdoors and relaxing with wellness-infused activities in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
WHERE TO STAY
Located in the heart of Bettmeralp, Hotel Panorama provides no-fuss accommodations steps away from the picturesque Chapel Maria Zum Schnee. The hotel’s restaurant offers delicious regional cuisine, including raclette paired with Swiss wine. A good bottle of Pinot Noir or Gamay is also easy to come by because the Valais region of Switzerland is one of the largest wine-producing areas in the country, with vineyards dotting the steep slopes of the Rhône Valley. In addition to wine and cheese, eating cholera, a covered vegetable pie invented in the region during the cholera epidemic, is a must.
WHAT TO DO
Begin at Viewpoint Moosfluh, the closest and lowest vantage point of the Aletsch Glacier. From there, trailheads lead to Villa Cassel, once the home of a British financier and now a museum focused on history and conservation. The hike passes through a thousand-year-old forest with views of both the glacier and the Matterhorn.
Walk over Goms Bridge, a nearly 1,000-foot-long suspension bridge that connects two hiking areas over the Rhône River. For a final look at the majestic glacier, take the cable car to Viewpoint Eggishorn. At nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Jungfraujoch, or the “Top of Europe,” and the most comprehensive view of the Aletsch Glacier.

Nothing
ARTICLE BY ANNIE DORAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
From first bites to meaningful celebrations, this bakery brings people together through beautifully made bundt cakes, thoughtfully baked and consistently delicious.
Bundt Cakes
A SWEET BEGINNING
There are certain flavors you never forget. For Rinda Norberg, it was a lemon bundtlet tasted during a visit to her sister in Houston, Texas. One bite was all it took. Even after returning home, that cake lingered in her thoughts, quietly planting the seed for what would become a joyful chapter of entrepreneurship. Today, she is the owner of the Nothing Bundt Cakes bakery in Maple Grove, where every cake feels like a celebration and every guest is welcomed like family.
Rinda’s journey into bakery ownership was not something she planned from childhood, even though baking was always part of her life. She grew up on a farm in
Rinda Norberg, Owner

South Dakota, where her mother was constantly cooking or baking for family, friends, and neighbors. Her mom made birthday cakes, wedding cakes, and special desserts for people throughout their community, and Rinda loved being part of those moments. She never imagined she would one day open her own bakery, but she did know that desserts had a way of bringing people together, and that feeling stayed with her.
FINDING THE RIGHT FIT
Before Maple Grove, Rinda opened her first Nothing Bundt Cakes location in Fargo, North Dakota, alongside her business partner, Jenna Larson. She was drawn to the clarity of the concept. One product, made with care and done exceptionally well. Bundt cakes finished with a signature buttercream cheese frosting that elevates every flavor. “It just seemed like the right fit for me,” Rinda said. The brand felt refreshing from the very beginning. There was no single defining moment, just a series of small signs that kept pointing her in the same direction, gently reassuring her that this was the right step to take.
When Rinda and her family moved back to Maple Grove a little over four years ago, the opportunity aligned perfectly. The Maple Grove Nothing Bundt Cakes bakery was for sale and purchasing it allowed her to return to daily bakery life while settling into a community she already loved. She had lived in Maple Grove before and always wanted to move back to be closer to family. “We just love it here,” Rinda shared. “There are so many fun things to do.”
“WE
ARE DEFINITELY A LITTLE FAMILY AT THE BAKERY. WATCHING OUR TEAM GROW, GAIN CONFIDENCE, AND TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR WORK HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST MEANINGFUL PARTS OF OWNERSHIP AND A REMINDER THAT GREAT BUSINESSES ARE BUILT BY PEOPLE FIRST.”

A BAKERY WITH HEART
Running the bakery has been a rewarding surprise. While it is certainly a lot of work, Rinda says what stands out most is how much fun it is. The bakery operates like a close-knit family, built on communication, mutual respect, and shared pride in the work. “We are definitely a little family at the bakery and care so much about each other,” she said. Rinda makes it a priority that every team member knows how important they are, believing success only happens when everyone works together.
One of the most meaningful parts of ownership for Rinda is watching her employees grow. Many are young and experiencing their first job. Seeing their confidence build and knowing she played a role in that growth is deeply rewarding.
Inside the bakery, the product speaks for itself. Nothing Bundt Cakes does not try to be everything. It does one thing and does it beautifully. From classic flavors to seasonal favorites, each cake is baked with care and consistency. Rinda’s personal favorite remains the lemon cake, the very flavor that started it all, with white chocolate raspberry close behind. Peppermint chocolate makes a festive return each holiday season, and pop-up flavors appear throughout the year, offering guests something new to discover.
BEYOND THE BAKERY WALLS
One of the biggest lessons she learned early on was that owning a business is not just about being inside its four walls. While she once felt she needed to be present from open to close every day, she now understands the importance of being active in the community. Networking, learning from other business owners, and giving back are just as essential as time spent in the bakery.

That commitment has not gone unnoticed. In her first year of ownership, Nothing Bundt Cakes in Maple Grove was named Main Street Business of the Year by the I-94 Chamber of Commerce. She also received the L.O.V.E. Award for the Midwest region, an internal recognition honoring franchise owners who embody the brand’s mission. “I was so surprised and honored to receive both of these awards,” Rinda said.
Giving back is woven into the bakery’s culture. Rinda and her team proudly partner with organizations like C.R.O.S.S. Services and local Rotary programs, including supporting bed deliveries for families in need. She hopes those partnerships continue to grow, strengthening the connection between the bakery and the community it serves.
At its heart, Nothing Bundt Cakes in Maple Grove is about more than dessert. It is about moments, milestones, and the simple joy of sharing something sweet. www.nothingbundtcakes.com | 763.650.3877

CARE AT WORK LOCALLY
SHARING THE MEANINGFUL WAYS CROSS SERVICES PROVIDES FOOD AND HOPE
We are proud to partner with CROSS Services because we see the difference they make in the Maple Grove area every day. From helping families put food on the table to offering support during unexpected seasons of need, their work shows up in real, tangible ways.
WHERE COMPASSION MEETS ACTION
ARTICLE
BY SARA SUMMERS JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CROSS SERVICES
Thriving communities don’t happen by accident. They are built when neighbors look out for one another, especially during life’s most challenging moments. Here in our community, CROSS Services plays a vital role in making

that care visible and accessible, connecting individuals and families with practical support, meaningful connections, and opportunities to give back.
Supporting CROSS Services isn’t just an act of generosity. It’s an investment in the strength and resilience of the place we call home.
MEETING REAL NEEDS EVERY WEEK
Each week, hundreds of our neighbors turn to CROSS Services for food, financial assistance, children’s programming, and guidance when unexpected challenges arise. These are families, seniors, and individuals seeking stability, and they find it through a network rooted in compassion.
Volunteers welcome each visitor with warmth. Local businesses and schools donate essential goods. Faith communities and civic clubs keep shelves stocked and spirits lifted. Together, these collective efforts create a safety net that supports not only those receiving help, but the entire community.
A COMMUNITY UNITED THROUGH PURPOSE
Beyond its day-to-day programs, CROSS Services brings the community together through events that combine connection with impact. From Pickle with Purpose to Empty Bowls and Tailgate Tee-Off to a local community prayer breakfast, these gatherings remind us that giving can be both joyful and meaningful.
Each event strengthens relationships while supporting essential services, proving that when neighbors come together, meaningful and positive changes follow.
AMPLIFYING IMPACT THROUGH MINNESOTA FOODSHARE
Generosity across our community shines even brighter during the Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign. During this time, food and monetary donations are matched, stretching every dollar further and ensuring families have access to nutritious food well beyond the campaign itself.

Whether it’s a financial gift or donated food, each contribution is multiplied through collective action, making a tangible difference close to home.
SUSTAINING LONG-TERM CHANGE
The impact of CROSS Services grows through neighbors who walk alongside its work. Monthly donors provide reliable support, sponsors help fund key programs, and major and planned gifts allow services to expand in response to evolving community needs and increased food insecurity.
These commitments are more than charitable acts; they are long-term investments in the health, vitality, and future of our community.
BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY TOGETHER
Much of CROSS Services’ work happens quietly, but its impact is felt daily. Families remain housed, seniors stay connected, and children have access to nutritious food. Each act of generosity, large or small, strengthens the community as a whole.
Whether you choose to volunteer your time, donate food, or offer financial support, there is a place for everyone to get involved. Supporting CROSS Services affirms a simple truth: when compassion is shared locally, it creates a stronger, more vibrant place for everyone to call home.
