The October issue of Windsor City Lifestyle is a vibrant celebration of the local food and drink scene—one of my favorite topics! Windsor is becoming a culinary hotspot, with a mix of cozy cafes, craft breweries, and farm-to-table options.
In this issue, we take a journey through Windsor’s culinary scene by exploring a new restaurant and revisiting a town favorite. We’ll also uncover the beauty and sustainability efforts of the Treasure Island Demonstration Garden.

When exploring Windsor’s culinary scene, make sure you start your day off at one of the local coffee shops, where seasonal brews and fresh pastries make the perfect morning treat. For lunch, discover hidden gems using the freshest local ingredients. As the day winds down, explore craft breweries and distilleries offering handcrafted beverages that perfectly capture the season’s flavors.
In addition, this issue shines a spotlight on the community’s dedication to supporting local farmers and producers. Every bite and sip are a celebration of fresh, local goodness. Whether you’re a dedicated foodie or just looking for a memorable meal, Windsor has something for everyone. As you turn the pages, you might just find your next dinner destination!
And to wrap it up, we’ll share some tips and tricks to help you make the most of your porch this fall! Enjoy these pages and bon appetit!

YOUR LOCAL BOOKSTORE LOCATED AT 631 BIRCH STREET, UNIT B WINDSOR

ARTICLE BY SAM WEBB
Champagne. Just the word brings visions of special celebrations and fizzy bubbles. But behind it is a rich history that we love stepping into with two wonderful books about Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, the “First Widow of Champagne."
One book is Champagne Widows, the novel by Rebecca Rosenberg, and on the non-fiction side, The Widow Clicquot by Tilar J. Mazzeo. Both books take us to France during a time of strife with the Napoleonic wars, social upheaval, and Barbe-Nicole with her inherited vineyard. The issue is that, as a woman in 1800s France, she has no control over the property unless she becomes a widow.
Almost like something from a romance novel, her childhood sweetheart reappears in her life, owning a family vineyard of his own, and they soon marry. Six years later she is widowed with a young child in a society not ready for a twenty-seven-year-old to run her own business. Through it all, she has her father’s support (if not always her in-laws), and history now knows her as an innovator in champagne making.
While certainly not written as companion books, we love how these two titles complement each other and pull both lovers of fiction and non-fiction into the fascinating history of this fashionable drink.

Fall is a Season of Gratitude and Giving
ARTICLE BY MADELINE CHEEK

“There is no feeling more satisfying than delivering for the people waiting at the Food Pantry.”
At Treasure Island Demonstration Garden, fall is a season of gratitude and giving. Gratitude, for the beauty and the camaraderie that has grown for yet another season. Giving, of the food that has been harvested after months of careful tending, donated by volunteers to their community.
Visitors to the garden will find inspiration in a demonstration area full of fall foliage and blooming beauties, followed by a stunning rainbow of zinnias. Behind the rainbow, rows of vegetables grow.
Vegetable garden volunteers maintain a time-honored tradition of growing fresh produce for those in need. Each year, they donate 1 to 2 tons of food to the Windsor-Severance Food Pantry—a tradition that has been upheld for the past 17 years.
Dave Unrein, one of the founding members of this tradition, reflects on his involvement:
“I began gardening about 65 years ago, growing up in a large, poor family that had to learn to fend for ourselves.
We had the satisfaction of growing our own food and feeding ourselves. When the opportunity arose to lead the vegetable garden at Treasure Island, we jumped on it and set to work. The garden now is a treasured staple for the citizens who count on us for food.”
In the early hours of the morning, volunteers bring in the harvest. Produce is delivered fresh to the food pantry just before it opens at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“There is no feeling more satisfying than delivering for the people waiting at the food pantry,” Dave says. “It makes the hours of work worth it,” he says.
The Windsor-Severance Food Pantry is a cornerstone of support for people in hard times. Their mission is to provide residents of the Weld County RE-4 School District with food, toiletries, and other daily necessities.
“The produce that Treasure Island provides is so important to the clients of the food pantry because it gives households important access to fresh vegetables,” says Brenda Heckman, Executive Director.

“Many of our clients have to choose between purchasing food or other necessities for their families. The fresh produce is a welcome treat for many of them.”
Both Treasure Island and the Food Pantry are volunteer-supported organizations. You can join the effort by visiting their websites.

If you missed out on enjoying your porch this summer, there is still time to sit back and relax. In fact, fall may be the best time of year to enjoy that porch!
Stacy Alms, Owner of Illusions Complete Home Solutions is devoted to capturing the essence of every detail. With a passion for design, Stacy loves helping clients create a unique atmosphere that accommodates their personal style. With an appreciation for timeless yet progressive styles, Stacy gives her clients the ability to design spaces that will continue to look classic as trends evolve.
As a designer, Stacy enjoys transforming porches for every season, making an outdoor space feel more like an indoor space. For comfort, Stacy suggests adding outdoor rugs, spacious chairs with weather-resistant cushions, and outdoor throws and blankets. For ambiance, outdoor candles, lanterns, and fire pits add light and warmth. For decor, incorporate fall plants to flowers to extend the blooming season of summer into the growing and harvesting season of fall. Mixing plants like mums,

aster, grasses, and decorative cabbage with late flower blooms adds color and dimension to planters.
Reuse fall cleanup items by cutting and drying tree branches, twigs, or any pruning item that will hold up well. Twig arrangements create a minimal and rustic touch.
Wrap twinkling lights around twig arrangements or tree trunks for a welcoming spotlight! Fill outdoor glass lanterns with dried flower heads, pinecones, twigs, and leaves, and hang them from trees. For Halloween, hang larger tree branches from the porch with spooky spider webs draping down, or fill classic pumpkin bags with raked leaves! On Halloween night, dress up your porch a little extra with jack-o-lanterns, creepy characters, and a fire pit, and pass out candy to trick-or-treaters!

Diverse Eateries, One Vision for Windsor Mill Tavern and Tiho’s Tequila Bar and Restaurant

Tim Downey, co-owner of Windsor Mill Tavern and newly opened, Tiho’s Tequila Bar and Restaurant is excited to have both establishments under one roof. Tim sees the opportunity to house both eateries in the historic mill as a lucky break following its devastating fire of 2017.
Downstairs in the Windsor Mill Tavern, in its fifth year, you’ll experience a speakeasy vibe with low ceilings, heavy wooden beams, dim lighting, and an American cuisine menu. Its upstairs counterpart, Tiho’s Tequila Bar and Restaurant, open since July, boasts a vibrant, high-ceilinged, lively atmosphere with fresh Mexican cuisine and plenty of tequila. Tim is confident the two restaurants “will complement and play well with each other.”
The restaurateur team is thrilled to welcome Chef Justin Brown who shares the vision for creating a fun, fast, and fresh dining experience. Owner and operator of Gourmet Grub, Justin brings professionalism and organization to the mix and a strong repertoire of Mexican cuisine.
Other team members include Roy Erhart, a new restaurant manager with tequila brokering experience, eager to contribute to Tiho’s success, and Colm O’Connor, manager of the Windsor Mill Tavern, who has a natural ability to connect with people, stemming from over a decade of experience in the Irish hospitality industry.
Tim is thankful to the Windsor community for their support during the difficult financial climate of COVID-19. In response, Tim and his team show their support to high schools, nonprofit organizations, and charities through gift cards and donations. Fun, weekly, budget-friendly specials are offered at the restaurants as an antidote to challenging economic times. They will also host their fourth annual Police and Firemen’s Ball in early October to honor those that protect and keep us safe, including those that directly worked on the fire at the mill.
