February invites us to slow down just enough to notice what and who truly fills our hearts. While Valentine’s Day often centers on romantic gestures, I have always believed that real love is much bigger than one day or one relationship. It is found in the places we call home, the people we surround ourselves with, and the moments of laughter that remind us why we chose this community in the first place.

Loving where you live is not just about beautiful homes, favorite restaurants, or familiar streets. It is about connection. It is waving to neighbors, supporting local businesses, cheering on our kids at games, and showing up for one another when it matters most. It is the quiet kindnesses and unexpected smiles that turn a city into a true community.
At the heart of my own life is my husband, Gary, my forever Valentine, my steady presence, and my biggest supporter. Together, we are raising three incredible humans, Ash, Averly, and Jaxx, who remind me daily that love is loud, messy, joyful, and always worth it. They have taught me that laughter is often the most powerful form of connection and that the smallest acts of kindness can leave the biggest impressions.
This month, I encourage you to look for ways to spread love beyond your inner circle. Pay for the coffee behind you, write a note to a teacher or first responder, support a local nonprofit, or simply take a moment to truly listen to someone who needs it. Random acts of kindness ripple far beyond what we can see, strengthening our community in ways that last long after February ends.
In this Local Love issue, we are celebrating the people, places, and passions that make our city extraordinary. Thank you for choosing to live, love, and invest right here, and for helping make our community one filled with warmth, generosity, and joy.

NONPROFIT OF THE MONTH SPONSORED BY ARTISAN MASONRY AND GRANITE
Tucked inside Harry Myers Park, the Rockwall County Historical Foundation Museum offers visitors something increasingly rare: a chance to slow down and connect with the stories that shaped the place they call home. Operated by the Rockwall County Historical Foundation, the museum is a living reminder that local history is not just something to remember, but something to experience.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE ROCKWALL COUNTY HISTORICAL FOUNDATION
The foundation was organized on January 16, 1978, with a clear purpose: to collect, preserve, and share the history of Rockwall County. Guided by the belief that the past should be preserved for the future, the foundation works

to restore significant places, educate the public, and recognize the people who helped shape the community. At its heart, the organization exists to connect the past to the present, ensuring these stories continue to inform and inspire future generations.
Today, the foundation owns and operates multiple historic buildings on the museum grounds, including the Bailey House, the Manson-LaMoreauxHartman House, and the Tenant Cabin. Each structure tells a distinct chapter of Rockwall County’s story and invites visitors to step inside history rather than simply read about it.
The Bailey House, built around 1909, began its life as a private home before later serving as a dental office. In 2017, it was moved to the museum grounds and carefully restored, including the return of two original fireplaces that had once been removed. Named for Titus “Tite” Bailey and his wife Lucy Estelle Curry Bailey, the home tells a powerful story of resilience. After being widowed with four young daughters, Lucy went on to become the first female elected County Clerk in Rockwall, a legacy that still resonates today.
The Manson-LaMoreaux-Hartman House carries an equally remarkable history.
Originally a modest dogtrot-style home, it became a center for medicine and civic leadership. Dr. Henry “Hal” Walker Manson practiced medicine there while serving in the Texas House of Representatives and publishing Rockwall’s first newspaper. Later, the home was occupied by Dr. Jessie Castle LaMoreaux, one of the first female dentists in Texas, whose groundbreaking career is recorded at the museum.
No visit would be complete without learning about the mysterious rock wall that gave Rockwall its name. While the original formation lies deep

underground, reconstructed sections allow visitors to experience the intrigue firsthand. With multiple natural outcroppings of the wall throughout the county, it is theorized that up to 20 miles of wall exists underground. The mystery surrounding its origins has fascinated geologists, historians, and residents since its discovery in 1852.
Beyond exhibits, the museum hosts guided and self-guided tours, family programs, and monthly lectures through the Sheri Stodghill Lecture Series, honoring a devoted advocate for local history. Together, these offerings make the Rockwall County Historical Foundation Museum a place of connection, curiosity, and community pride.
Visiting the museum is more than a history lesson. It is a celebration of the people, perseverance, and stories that continue to shape Rockwall County today.
To enjoy local history, visit the museum Thursday through Saturday every week from 10am - 3pm, and Sundays from 1-4pm. Please note that the last tour is 30 minutes before closing. The museum is located at 901 E Washington St., Rockwall, TX 75087. Find more details at www.rockwallcountymuseum.com

AN INSPIRATIONAL CONVERSATION WITH CHILDREN’S AUTHOR JANETTE WOLD

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE CHILDREN'S BOOKS?
Children’s books were my first doorway into possibility. They were colorful, comforting, and full of messages that stayed with me even as I grew up. I wanted to write stories that feel the same way for today’s kids—playful, wise, and full of heart.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR THE ADVENTURES OF SQUEAKY THE GOOSE?
Squeaky came to me as a character first inspired by my late brother-in-law, this curious, quirky, brave little goose with a big heart and an even bigger imagination. I loved the idea of a character who “squeaks” when excited or nervous and isn’t embarrassed about it, someone who embraces what makes them different.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WRITING PROCESS?
My process always starts with emotion. For each Squeaky story, I choose a theme like bravery, kindness, trying new things, or overcoming fear and build an adventure around it. I imagine how a child might feel in that situation. After that, I shape the story, refine the dialogue, and make sure the message is gentle, accessible, and woven in naturally.
WHAT MESSAGES DO YOU HOPE CHILDREN TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR BOOKS?
Most of all, I want kids to see themselves in Squeaky, brave in their own way, lovable exactly as they are, and capable of turning everyday moments into adventures. But bigger than that I would love children to know that although new experiences can be scary, they can also be filled with growth, fun, and adventure.

When I became a husband and, later, a father, I began to understand love in a new way. Not just the emotional side but the kind that looks ahead, prepares, and quietly protects your family long before they ever know they need protecting. Estate planning, for me, has become one of the clearest ways to live out that kind of love.
It’s not dramatic or glamorous. No one celebrates when you sign a will or complete a trust. But the impact is profound. It is a quiet, steady way of telling your family: “I want you to be cared for, even if I can’t be here to do it myself.”
HOW MY CALLING BEGAN
When I was serving as general counsel during a corporate transition at a tech firm, I started practicing estate planning on the side. What drew me in wasn’t just the legal work—it was the way this area of law allows me to live out my faith in a practical, everyday way. It gives me the chance to help families steward what God has entrusted to them with clarity and peace.
Proverbs 27:23 says, “Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and attend to your herds.” While most of us no longer manage livestock, the principle still applies: God calls us to pay attention to the responsibilities He has placed in our hands our homes, our resources, and the people we love. Estate planning is simply a modern expression of that diligence.
WHY
Over the years, I’ve heard countless stories of families thrown into chaos upon losing a loved one because there was no plan in place. Not dramatic, unusual stories but situations that happen every day:
• Loved ones not knowing who was supposed to handle finances.
• Family members disagreeing about medical decisions.
• Dependents left without clear guardianship instructions.
• Spouses discovering that assets weren’t titled the way they assumed. And in the hardest moments of life, uncertainty makes everything heavier. What grief already complicates, a lack of planning multiplies.
On the other hand, families who have gone through thoughtful planning often experience something entirely different—less conflict, fewer surprises, and a sense of peace knowing their loved one had already made decisions with their care in mind.
A will doesn’t just distribute belongings. A trust doesn’t just organize finances. A power of attorney doesn’t just delegate authority. Together, these become a “love letter” to your family—a letter that says:
“Here’s how I want to take care of you.”
“Here is the person I trust to help you if you ever need it.”
“Here is clarity so you won’t be burdened with confusion.”
Love isn’t only expressed in words or feelings. Sometimes it looks like making decisions today that will bless the people you love tomorrow.
My business is named Faithful Stewardship for a reason. Scripture reminds us: “It is required of stewards that they be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). Estate planning is part of that faithfulness—not from fear, but from wisdom. It means acknowledging

“Estate planning is an act of love, order, and protection. It’s something you do so your family’s hardest moments are made easier.”

that life is fragile, time is uncertain, and preparation is an act of care for the people God has entrusted to you.
Psalm 90:12 says: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Planning doesn’t mean expecting the worst. It means being wise with the time and responsibility God has given.
My wife and I are raising our daughter here in the Rockwall area, and I’ve come to see how deeply families in our community care about one another. People want to do right by those they love. They just often underestimate how important planning truly is, or they don’t know where to start.
The February Rockwall City Lifestyle Local Love issue is the perfect place for this topic. Estate planning is an act of love, order, and protection. It’s something you do so your family’s hardest moments are made easier. It’s a way of saying, “My love for you includes preparing for what I cannot control.”
If this resonates with you—if you’ve been meaning to get your affairs in order or simply want to make things easier for your loved ones—I offer a free initial consultation to walk you through your options, answer your questions, and help you understand what a thoughtful, God-honoring plan could look like for your family.
Estate planning is not about fear or wealth. It’s about faith, stewardship, clarity, and care. It is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give to the people who matter most.

A Romantic Getaway Close to Home
Hotel Crescent Court
ARTICLE BY ANGI BURNS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHER BIGENHO PHOTOGRAPHY

There is something irresistible about a romantic escape that does not require traveling far. Less than an hour from home, Uptown Dallas offered everything we wanted for our anniversary weekend: elegance, intimacy, and the feeling of being truly away. At the heart of it all was Hotel Crescent Court, a place that made celebrating our love effortless and unforgettable.

From the moment we arrived, the hotel wrapped us in a sense of calm luxury. The gracious lobby, attentive service, and timeless design immediately signaled that this weekend would be something special. Hotel Crescent Court has long been one of Dallas’s most iconic addresses, but experiencing it as a couple revealed how beautifully it functions as a romantic retreat, not just a place to stay.
I chose Hotel Crescent Court for our vow renewal because it offered the perfect balance of intimacy and grandeur. We wanted something meaningful and personal, yet polished and elevated. The courtyard provided a romantic, almost European backdrop for our ceremony, surrounded by classic architecture and lush greenery. It felt private and heartfelt while still offering the flexibility to host large, extravagant weddings and events in the hotel’s breathtaking ballrooms.
One of the greatest gifts of hosting our vow renewal here was that our family did not need to travel. Being close to home allowed our loved ones to share in our love story without the stress of flights or hotels. Our
children, ranging in age from 11 to 23, joined us for the day of the ceremony and had no shortage of nearby activities to enjoy. From exploring Uptown to walking Klyde Warren Park, shopping and dining just steps away, they were happily occupied, giving us the freedom to focus on each other and the meaning of the day.
Our weekend began with welcome cocktails at Beau Nash, the iconic lobby bar where expertly crafted drinks and an impressive whiskey selection make lingering feel natural. Dinner at The Crescent Club followed, perched high above the city with sweeping skyline views and an atmosphere that blended classic club elegance with modern energy. The dining experience at The Crescent Club was nothing short of decadent. From the first course to the last, every dish felt thoughtfully crafted and indulgent, matched only by the impeccable service. The servers were incredibly attentive, anticipating our needs and personalizing each detail, creating an elevated, seamless experience that made the evening feel truly special. It was the kind of evening that reminded us why slowing down together matters.
Saturday morning brought breakfast at The Conservatory, a sunfilled glass space overlooking serene gardens. The pace of the weekend felt intentional, unrushed, and indulgent. We took advantage of the hotel’s luxe house car to explore nearby favorites in the Arts District and beyond, a reminder of how vibrant and accessible Uptown truly is.
The afternoon was devoted to relaxation at The Spa at The Crescent, where a couples massage allowed us to fully disconnect and be present together. Between spa time, lounging poolside, and strolling through the Crescent complex, including a visit to Stanley Korshak, the day unfolded beautifully.
That evening, we returned to the courtyard to renew our vows. Surrounded by loved ones and every detail thoughtfully handled, the moment felt deeply personal and incredibly romantic. It was a celebration of our past, present, and future, set in a place that elevated every emotion.
As we wrapped up our stay with coffee from Ascension just across the street, I was reminded that love does not need distance to feel like an escape. For Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, or any time you need to feel loved, Hotel Crescent Court and Uptown Dallas offer a luxurious reminder that romance can be closer than you think.

Indulge in Handcrafted Confections

Valentine’s Day is all about romance, intention, a little indulgence—and personalized chocolate treats deliver all three in the most delightful way. This season of love, treat your sweetheart to creative, personalized candies that feel thoughtful, festive, and made just for them.
From chocolate-covered strawberries to whimsical cupcakes and beautifully designed heart cakes, a local sweet sorceress is turning classic Valentine’s treats into memorable experiences. Every item is handcrafted, customizable, and infused with care, making them perfect for celebrating partners, friends, kids, or anyone who deserves a little extra love in February. Who is this magician with cocoa and buttercream? Local legend Lee Wickland of Wickland’s Sweet Connections.

Those moments stayed with her, quietly shaping a dream she never let go of. After spending years studying art and raising three children, the time came for Wickland's Sweet Connections to be born. Today, that artistic background shines through in every creation from her kitchen.
Chocolate-covered strawberries are dipped and decorated with care, cupcakes feel celebratory and charming, and heart cakes are designed to be as meaningful as they are beautiful. “I hope everyone that tries my chocolates tastes the love and time that goes into each handcrafted piece,” Lee said.
Valentine’s Day at Wickland's Sweet Connections is about more than sweets. It’s about kindness and celebrating love in all its forms while supporting a true local business. Whether you’re surprising your sweetheart, picking up treats for the family, or assembling a custom gift basket, Lee’s genuine warmth makes the experience even sweeter. This Valentine’s Day, Wickland's Sweet Connections makes it easy to say “I love you,” one handcrafted bite at a time.
The Valentine’s magic starts the moment you walk through the door at Wickland’s Sweet Connections. The interior décor sets the tone for a fun, joyful dessert experience, filled with playful details and an impressive amount of pink that instantly lifts your spirits.
“It’s always been a dream of mine for people to walk in and immediately have a smile on their face,” owner and chocolatier Lee shared. That warmth is felt long before the first bite.
Lee’s love for chocolate began when she was a young girl, visiting a family-owned chocolate shop with her aunt during the holidays. She remembers the long lines, the unforgettable smell, and watching chocolatiers handcraft each piece behind the counter. “As you walked into the shop, the smell would over take all of my senses. It was heavenly!”

The following stories come straight from members of our own community, and they celebrate the many ways couples take that big, brave step toward forever--and the way one pair of high school sweethearts are living out their happily ever after. Some proposals went exactly as planned, while others endured an unexpected twist from Mother Nature. But every single one ends the same way: with a joyful “yes” and a celebration that marks the start of a lifetime together.
UNDETERRED BY THE STORM
"Wesley’s original plan was to propose at the outdoor pickleball courts where we met. But as he waited for me to get back from a bachelorette trip, a crazy storm started up with high winds and lots of rain. We had planned to meet at five thirty for pickleball (or so I thought), and he texted me saying he was at the courts and would let me know if the rain let up.
"Wesley had planned for about 15 of our friends to be a part of the proposal, so they were all waiting in their cars at the park. Finally, he called it and sent a message out to everyone to meet at his house in Richardson, where he would propose instead. He texted me separately and told me to invite my friends to his place for a game night. That’s what I thought I was walking into when I got to his house.
"When I arrived, Wesley opened the door, revealing a candlelit living room with a beautiful vase of roses. He brought me inside, got down on his knee, said the sweetest proposal, and pulled out the gorgeous engagement ring I had picked out about a month before. I don’t remember the exact words, but I remember feeling so treasured and cared for by what he said. I was so excited to say yes! And when I did, our friends who had been hiding around the house cheered and popped out to surprise me with congratulations!" - Abby

Our love story didn’t begin with a rom-com moment— it started in high school, with two kids who had no idea they were signing up for a lifetime adventure. Nearly 30 years later, here we are . . . still choosing each other, still laughing, and still building dreams together.
We became parents young, learned adulthood on the fly, and discovered early that love isn’t always candlelight and roses—it’s construction boots, nursing textbooks, and late nights wondering how it will all work out. Kevin worked in construction, I went back to nursing school when our youngest was just one, and together we figured it out— one sacrifice, one victory, and one baby at a time.
Our love story didn’t begin with a rom-com moment—it started in high school, with two kids who had no idea they were signing up for a lifetime adventure. Nearly 30 years later, here we are… still choosing each other, still laughing, and still building dreams together. “
Today, our once-busy house has grown into four amazing daughters and five (almost six!) grandkids who keep us smiling and on our toes.
In 2017, we packed up and moved to Texas, chasing sunshine and new dreams. Since then, we’ve launched three businesses together—Busher Excavating, Revive Aesthetics & Healthcare, and our newest passion, Vino Lounge.
Our secret to lasting love?
It’s not magic—it’s a choice. We choose patience, laughter, grace . . . and each other. Every day. And honestly? We’d do it all over again. - Windy Busher

"My then fiancé (and now husband!) and I had been long distance for about eight months, with him living in Houston while I was in Rockwall. We met via mutual friends through our local church in Houston in 2023. I had graduated from dental school in Houston in June 2024 and then moved back home to Rockwall to join our family's dental practice, Fisher and Zitterich Dentistry. Working with my dad and doing what I love, dentistry, had always been a dream, and meeting a man who supported, encouraged, and helped me achieve those dreams was incredible.
From June 2024 to January 2025, we saw each other almost every weekend, alternating who drove to see whom each time. Being long distance made planning for an engagement harder, as trying to have all the details in order to surprise me without raising suspicion was difficult for him (like ensuring I wore the perfect outfit, having my nails done, making sure my family could be in Houston too, etc.).

"Jake had all the details in line and tried to keep everything under wraps: having the ring in hand for five months before proposing, calling all my dear friends with enough notice to make sure that they could be in Houston for the surprise party, and even calling my parents while they were out of the country to ask for their blessing. He thought of every detail to make the moment memorable.
"I love museums and gardens, so he picked a place I had wanted to go to but never been to, which fit all my romantic ideals of the perfect proposal. He also planned out ahead of time for the best bench and view for the moment and even set up a lunch reservation at a stunningly romantic restaurant afterwards. Each and every detail of the day was picked out with careful consideration and with our story in mind.
"When we had been dating a couple of months or so, Jake told me he had made a decision long before that he wanted to wait
to say "I love you" until he said it to the woman he would marry. He knew the feelings would be there before saying the words but wanted to reserve such a deep statement for his fiancée and wife. So when he knelt down and started by saying those three words, I instantly knew and was too excited to let him finish.
"Jake is such a wonderful man, the perfect partner for me, and such a blessing from the Lord. The answer to the proposal was easy. I said "yes" before he finished asking me, and it was beautiful! Following lunch, we drove back to Jake's parents house, and he had a whole surprise party planned with family and friends from all over. It was perfect!! Being long distance, we had a shorter engagement but made sure it was long enough to plan the wedding celebration of our dreams. We got married just three months ago and have been on cloud nine since! -

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? Everyone knows this line from Snow White. The Queen wanted to be the fairest. When she wasn’t, she poisoned beautiful Snow White. Most of us do not believe ourselves to be the fairest, but quite the opposite.
As February is widely known as the month of love, let’s focus on self-love. Often people, especially parents, tend to give a lot to their partners and their children and less to themselves. Sometimes it is challenging for us to silence the inner critic that speaks harshly to ourselves in a way we would never speak to a loved friend or family member. This is where mirror work can help.
Many people have a complicated relationship with the mirror. We don’t always like to look at our reflections. We may find it confronting. Taylor Swift even sings about it in her song Anti-hero: “I’ll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror.” Why is it so difficult for some of us to gaze with love–or affection–into the mirror?
ARTICLE BY LEA GRIMALDI
Mirror work, a term coined by transformational teacher and selflove expert Louise Hay, founder of Hay House Publishing, and the author of You Can Heal Your Life and Mirror Work: 21 Days to Heal Your Life, is the practice of looking at yourself in the mirror and saying nice things to yourself. You can start with something simple. “I like myself. I am doing the best I can today.” Or even, “Hey sweetie! You look great!” One of my favorites is, “I love, accept, and forgive myself fully and completely.” Mirror work combines well with affirmations, which are positive phrases said in the present tense as if they are already true. The practice of saying affirmations combined with mirror work can increase the benefits of both practices.

The objective of mirror work is to help people silence their inner critic and believe the positive words they are telling themselves while looking at themselves in the mirror.
Mirror work can help with self-esteem issues and can achieve results such as changing a negative body image to a more positive one. Hay developed the practice to increase self-compassion and self-love as part of the daily activities detailed in her 1984 book You Can Heal Your Life
Although it can be confronting and challenging, it is important to practice mirror work regularly to reap the benefits. Set a daily goal of saying affirmations while looking at your reflection in the mirror and seeing how it makes you feel. Start with two minutes a day and work up to five.
As a yoga teacher, I have included mirror work in my classes with clients. Often the first experience with the exercise is somewhat uncomfortable, but with practice, it becomes more natural. When resistance comes up, ask yourself what you are feeling, allow the emotion to be present, and then release it. It may be rooted in a past experience and just needs to be acknowledged and felt before you can let it go.
• Make sure you will be alone and uninterrupted so you can let your guard down and allow emotions to surface
• Try to do it for a set amount of time, such as five minutes every day
• Allow yourself to feel and process whatever emotions show up
• Keep a journal to record your feelings, reactions, and experiences
• Start with less confronting or difficult phrases, and as you become comfortable increase the intensity
Mirror work can be used in tandem with inner-child work because many of the negative limiting beliefs that play in our minds are the result of something we were told as a child that is not true about us or our life. If something negative comes up during mirror work, we can challenge it and write about the feelings in the journal, thus freeing us from that limiting belief.
Inner child work is an approach to recognizing and healing childhood trauma. We all experience traumas as children which affect the way we experience the world. As adults, we can reconnect with the child we once were, in order to heal. Mirror work is one way to help facilitate that process, in addition to talk therapy, meditation exercises, and setting healthy boundaries.
Here are some ideas for affirmations to use with your mirror work. I am strong. I am capable. I can do this. I believe in myself. I know my worth. I can do hard things. My life is abundant. I am happy and healthy in mind, body, and spirit. I believe in myself. I am kind and compassionate. I deserve love and abundance. I am doing my best. I am smart. I am brave. I am powerful.
In the words of Hay, “Doing mirror work is one of the most loving gifts you can give yourself.”
I AM STRONG.

Not every date night needs to involve reservations or an elaborate itinerary. With a little creativity, you can create magical moments right at home. Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or just want to reconnect, here are three ideas for unforgettable at-home date nights.

Transform your backyard or balcony into a dreamy picnic spot! Spread out a cozy blanket, add a few fluffy pillows, and hang string lights or fairy lights for ambiance. A small fire pit or lanterns can also add a romantic glow.
Pack a picnic basket with finger foods and a bottle of wine or sparkling water. Don’t forget a decadent dessert like chocolate-dipped strawberries.
Lay back and stargaze, identifying constellations or making wishes on shooting stars. To make it extra romantic, bring a bluetooth speaker and play soft music.
Unleash your inner artists with one of these three fun and interactive dates. Grab some inexpensive canvases, brushes, and acrylic paints from the craft store. Don’t forget aprons or old clothes to protect against spills!
• Paint each other’s portraits for a mix of laughter and creativity.
• Work on a collaborative paintingeach person adds their own touch to a single canvas.
• Try a themed painting challenge, like recreating your favorite memory together. Pair this date with a cheese platter and wine and don’t worry about being “good’ at painting - it’s all about enjoying the process together.
Start the day with love by turning breakfast into an indulgent experience. Prepare a tray with a DIY breakfast charcuterie board. Include mini pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, bacon, and pastries. Add small bowls of toppings like syrup, Nutella, or whipped cream.
Mix up mimosas or serve coffee with flavored syrups and whipped cream for a café vibe. Then, snuggle up in bed and watch a favorite movie or TV series.
