Fostering Literacy and Learning at Clearview Library District

Nestled in a cozy corner of the Children's Area at the Windsor Library is a green cushion, the heart of the PAWS Reading Program, fostering literacy skills in a comfortable setting. This unique initiative is dedicated to fostering literacy skills in an environment that prioritizes comfort and confidence, all thanks to the remarkable impact of therapy dogs.
The PAWS for Reading Program stands out by employing extensively trained, tested, and certified therapy dogs to create a positive association with reading for children at all levels. These gentle canines serve as the perfect audience, offering a calming and non-judgmental presence that sets an ideal stage for children to enhance their reading skills. In this quintessential learning environment, children can register for 15-minute sessions to read alongside one of the pups. Confidence-building and storytelling converge to elevate literacy, fluency, and comprehension. But the program's impact goes beyond just enhancing reading ability; it's about nurturing the children's self-confidence.
The PAWS for Reading Program has not only transformed reading habits but also lives. Take, for example, a young patron named Eli, who was initially afraid of dogs but now considers Lucky, one of the therapy dogs, to be his new best friend. "Thank you for the program. Eli has been scared of dogs and said that Lucky is his new best friend.

He read 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear' to him today," expressed Eli's grateful parent. Diana Hyland, youth services supervisor overseeing the program, recalls a particularly heartwarming moment of empowerment and confidence from a participant. "A young girl was reading to a dog for the first time and she whispered to her mom that she didn't think she could read good enough. Our volunteer explained that it was okay if she didn't know all the words, that her dog would love whatever she read, and to tell about the pictures if she wanted to. The little girl took a deep breath, smiled and ran over to the dog, gave him a big hug and said I will do my best and I hope you like the story. When she left she told her mom that she felt

like the dog liked her story and she knows she can do it because the dog loves me and the stories no matter what."
The PAWS program not only enhances reading skills but also transforms lives, creating resilient individuals. The library offers different session times for registration, Monday to Saturday, to accommodate various schedules. As a token of appreciation, the young readers receive small prizes such as bookmarks, stickers, bubbles, or even books after each session, which helps instill a love for books, confidence, and empathy in children.
PAWS for Reading is part of a range of early literacy programs that help children prepare for school and beyond. The programs at both the Windsor and Severance Library branches promote five key practices for early literacy success: reading, writing, talking, singing, and playing. These skills are incorporated into storytimes and other programs for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers. And the staff have fun doing it!
In early 2024, the Library District updated some children’s programs and introduced new ones to align with plans for the opening of the new Severance Library in April. Early literacy programs for ages 0-5 foster a lifelong passion for reading. Both library branches offer Storytime & a Craft, Read, Rhyme, and Romp programs. Programs for children ages 6-12 at the branches also provide opportunities for learning and engaging experiences. Afterschool sessions focus on STEAM, book clubs, and special events for interactive learning. Lego Engineers and Kids in the Kitchen foster creativity and problem-solving skills. The Library District nurtures young minds, fuels a passion for reading, and encourages curiosity, strengthening the community.
The Clearview Library District offers educational and engaging programs tailored to various age groups and interests. It serves as a place where imaginations soar, curiosity is cultivated, and families are united through the joy of reading. Visit clearview.libnet.info/events to explore a wide range of programs and events for all ages and interests, encouraging a love for reading and lifelong learning!

Happy August! Words of Windsor is excited to share our book review of 'The One and Only Family' by Katherine Applegate. This is the fourth and final book in 'The One and Only' series, and it wraps up Ivan's story beautifully.
Ivan, the Silverback gorilla, is living at a sanctuary with his mate. They’re about to become parents and Ivan thinks it will be easy, but guess what? It's not! When the twins arrive, everything changes. Suddenly, Ivan is dealing with two curious two-year-olds asking a million questions.
His friends, Bob the dog and Ruby the elephant, are always around to help out. Bob gives hilarious advice while Ruby shares wise thoughts. There’s one funny part where Bob tries to teach the twins how to fetch, and let's just say it doesn't go as planned! Ruby, on the other hand, tries to explain the importance of patience, which leads to some laugh-out-loud moments.
The book is divided into four sections, perfect for readers who like shorter chunks. Almost every page has a title, making it a perfect read for the 8-11-year-olds. By the end, Ivan celebrates his birthday and looks forward to the future with his family.
We loved this heartwarming and funny story and think you will too. Follow us on Instagram at @wordswindsor or visit our website WordsofWindsor.com for more fun events and news.

“Animals offer unconditional love and acceptance, which children desperately need.”
Research shows that animals help calm us, leading to better mental well-being. Eighty-five percent of pet owners report improved overall mental health after getting a pet.* Petting animals for even five minutes can increase dopamine levels, providing a sense of pleasure and wellbeing.
Anita Reynoso, LCSW, RPT, CASI, ADHD-CCSP, is a School-based Therapist for North Range Behavioral Health who offers animal assisted therapy at elementary schools. Ziggy, her five-year-old golden doodle, helps reduce stress and anxiety in the students through his calm, empathetic nature. For this month’s issue, Anita shared insights on how animals enhance our mental health and the special effects of raising a pet on children.
When children care for animals, they develop essential life skills. Pets often make children feel safe, loved, and protected, which can boost self-esteem and lead to more restful sleep, both critical for mental health. The structure and routine required to care for pets help children feel more secure. Pets also decrease loneliness and provide companionship, especially in homes where caregivers are very busy or absent.
Children learn empathy and emotional intelligence when a pet gets hurt or sick. They witness the animal's emotions and learn how to care for them in various emotional states, understanding that others may have different perspectives. For example, many dogs fear fireworks; and loud noises. A good pet owner might take their dog far from the fireworks, bring them to a quiet basement, or turn up the TV to mask the noise. This teaches children compassion and empathy, as they take precautions to comfort
their pet. This responsibility of pet care helps prepare them for future responsibilities in life.
Animals offer unconditional love and acceptance, which children desperately need. This unconditional love assures them that no matter their mistakes, their pet is always by their side. Pets are also great confidantes, allowing children to express their emotions and feelings safely and comfortably.
Recognizing an animal's feelings and boundaries helps children recognize these in others and themselves. They learn not to tolerate things they dislike and understand how an animal responds to kindness or unkindness, lessons that often transfer to human relationships. Dog ownership encourages children to spend more time outside, leading to more green time and less screen time. This outdoor activity provides much-needed vitamin D, which is known to decrease depression.
Animals help children gain a greater understanding of the world around them by learning to pay attention to external factors to keep their pets safe and healthy. Creativity problem-solving can also come into play, such as figuring out how to exercise their dog when it's too cold to go for a walk.
The skills learned from pet ownership translate to many other areas of life, fostering compassion and responsible behavior in children and helping them become more empathetic human beings. Managing the day-to-day tasks of pet care, such as feeding, grooming, and exercising, teaches children the importance of routine and commitment. This foundation not only benefits their personal growth but also positively influences their interactions with others. Additionally, the bond formed with a pet can improve emotional intelligence and social skills, as children learn to communicate and build trust with their animal companions. “ ”

While most high school graduates are spending time with family and friends, embarking on graduation trips, and preparing for departures to college, Windsor High School
Winning state competitions at age twelve, Jake began competing nationally under the guidance of his club coach and mentor. Observing the intensity with which his rivals trained,
graduate, Jake Eccleston made the impressive journey to compete in the Olympic swimming trials in Indianapolis where he finished within seconds of the top eight contenders, eliciting immeasurable pride from his family and friends.
Jake’s swimming career began because of his affinity for water and his tenacity. His mom enrolled him in a toddler swim class after struggling to keep four-year-old Jake out of the water during his sisters’ swim practices.
Desiring to advance his swimming skills beyond his age level, Jake persisted in swimming distances that were deemed outside his age range, impressing his parents and coaches when proving himself as he swam a 500-yard freestyle event at age eight, finishing with an amazing time. Mid-distance lengths becoming his preference, he developed a keen awareness of what needed to be done and what to demand of his body to achieve his swimming goals.
Jake elevated his training regimen, leading him to win the 200m breaststroke, setting him apart as the Junior National Champion.
After receiving the distressing news that his coach was moving away, Jake made the difficult transition from his longtime team, the Loveland Swim Club to the Ft. Collins Area Swim Team.
Once settled, training for last year’s trial qualifications began, and things looked promising. But Jake sustained a life-changing injury resulting from a fluke golfing accident. Walking back from collecting a nearby ball, unaware of his buddy’s practice swing, he suffered a blow behind his right ear from the club. Hospitalized, he needed stitches and rehabilitation to relearn his sense of balance necessary for walking and certainly swimming. A feeling of constant spinning and a temporary bout with trauma-induced Bell’s palsy ensued. A coach with Bell’s palsy experience provided Jake with

strategies to help manage the paralysis. Nationals only weeks away motivated Jake to resume training just two weeks after his accident. Jake managed to final in 200m breaststroke - an enormous feat after such a traumatic injury.
Later, Jake made the unfortunate discovery that he was permanently deaf in his right ear due to the accident. Still able to train and go to Futures, Jake was satisfied to finish the season. He then turned his focus to the Junior Nationals he had won the prior year, cognisant of his injury. “If I don’t get better than I was last year, then how much of this injury really affected me?” Placing fifth all-time, setting an official 200m breaststroke record for the Chicago pools, and being just a tenth of a second away from a new Junior Nationals record, he received his answer. May 2024 included Conference and State meets and the definitive meet where Jake qualified for this year’s Olympic trials by a tenth of a second!
Graduating summa cum laude with a 4.197 GPA, Jake holds every swim record at Windsor High except one, is a six-time State Champion, a six-time All-American, a two-year Academic All-American, and holds the 4A State Record for the 100m breaststroke and 200m Individual Medley. He looks forward to contributing to the University of Louisville's swim team and studying computer science and engineering.
