Welcome Summer and Happy Fathers Day!
Have you ever wondered, “Do fathers matter? What differences do I make in my home as a dad?” Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their home and family. However, how much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!
On a personal note, "I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have an amazing father — Bill Dickman. He has been so much more than just a parent to me; he’s been a role model, a mentor, and truly the best dad anyone could ask for.

I would not be the man I am today without his wisdom, guidance, and steady presence in my life. Through every high and low, his sacrifices, advice, and unwavering support have helped shape my character. He’s shown me how to navigate life with humility, grace, and patience — values I strive to carry forward every day.
Words will never fully capture how deeply I love and admire my father. I am endlessly grateful to have such a strong, positive example of what it means to be a good man. He is, and always will be, one of the greatest blessings in my life."
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children.
As I reflect on fatherhood this month, here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their home:
• A father’s strength can be powerful
• A dad’s words can be fueling and inspirational
• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting
• A dad’s smiles can instill joy and confidence
• Time with a dad can be fun and productive
• A dad’s physicality can be challenging
• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational
• A father’s correction can be life-saving and life-giving
• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you.
Happy Father’s Day!

BRONCO RESTORATION REMEMBRANCE
THE PAW PAW BROWN PROJECT
ARTICLE BY TRAN BUI

The ad said, "1969 Bronco for sale." Upon closer inspection, members of the Georgia Broncos Club discovered this was more than a classic car. It once belonged to Phillip “Paw Paw” Brown, a devoted family man and Bronco enthusiast. His wish was to restore the cherished vehicle to its original glory so that his daughter Kymberly Matthews and grandchildren Zack Smith and Kylie Elliot could enjoy it for years to come. Sadly, Paw Paw passed away before fulfilling this dream, leaving the Bronco abandoned behind his home.
“When I think about my daddy there are a lot of things that come to mind, but the Bronco is in the forefront,” Matthews says. “He loved that vehicle and was always doing something with it up until the day he left this earth.”
Faced with the harsh reality of limited resources and expertise, his family reluctantly decided to part with it. Little did they know this decision would spark a wave of compassion and support from an unexpected source.
Georgia Broncos Club founder Brian LaFluer couldn’t stand by idly. He assembled a team of members, volunteers and sponsors to save the vehicle. “This is far beyond the typical restoration project,” LaFluer says. “The emotional connection runs deep, and we wanted to help keep the Bronco in the family.”
Lead builders Gabe and Erin Donnelson of Strange Klassics Garage eagerly took on the project. “The goal was not just to restore a vehicle, but to revive the spirit of someone special and give the family more beautiful memories with it,” they explain.
The Bronco required extensive work to bring it back to life. That included metalwork, rust repair, engine refurbishment and a complete overhaul of the vehicle's systems. The team not only restored it but documented the journey in a five-part video series produced by Tran Bui Productions, which can be seen on the group's YouTube channel, website, Facebook and Instagram pages.
The revised Bronco will be revealed and presented to the family at a special event hosted by Deep Roots Wine Market and Tasting Room in Roswell later this month. Paw Paw was a Scout leader for more than 30 years and loved going on camping trips. Kymberly plans to take the Bronco to his favorite campsite on its first drive.

“We are overwhelmed and forever grateful to the Georgia Broncos Club community for their kindness and graciousness,”
“We are overwhelmed and forever grateful to the Georgia Broncos Club community for their kindness and graciousness,” Matthews says. “It's never easy to lose someone, especially your daddy, best friend and hero, so having this Bronco feels like part of him is with me.”

SUMMER GRILL
RECIPES
ARTICLE BY KATIE BOBROW
THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER
The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!
DIRECTIONS:
1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag
2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.
3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.
4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.
5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.
6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).
7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.
*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.

SIMPLE SKIRT STEAK
INGREDIENTS:
• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*
• 2 Tablespoons lime*
• 2 Tablespoons finely,

chopped cilantro
• ¼ Cup olive oil or avocado oil
• ¼ White onion, finely chopped
• 1 Tablespoon cumin
• Salt and pepper to taste

CHIMICHURRI
INGREDIENTS:
• ½ Cup parsley, finely chopped
• ½ Cup cilantro, finely chopped
• 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar
• 3 Cloves garlic, minced
• 1 Red chili (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)
• ½ Teaspoon dried oregano
• 1 Teaspoon salt
• 1 Tablespoon lime juice (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can make this in the late morning and let it sit for around 4-6 hours, or you can make it the day before and let the flavors meld overnight in the fridge. Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.

ROASTED CORN SALSA

INGREDIENTS:
• 2 Ears sweet corn
• 10oz. Cherry tomatoes
• ¼ Cup lime juice
• 1 Finely chopped jalapeno or serrano (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)
• ¼ Cup cilantro, finely chopped
• ½ Cup white onion, chopped
• 2 Cloves garlic, minced
• Salt to taste
DIRECTIONS:
1. Grill corn, you do not need to soak the corn beforehand.
2. Place corn on the grill (inside their husks) over medium heat turning every few minutes.
3. After 10 to 12 minutes shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for 2-4 minutes rotating frequently to achieve that charred look and flavor.
4. Cut the corn from the cob, place in bowl and add all other ingredients. Let the mixture meld for about an hour and serve with tortilla chips or as a taco garnish.

Les Marmitons, Gentlemen's Cooking Club
Local men who share a common interest in fine food, wine and the culinary arts
Les Marmitons is a gastronomic and social club of gentlemen who share a common interest in fine food, wine and the culinary arts. Through regular gatherings in professional kitchens members gain knowledge and experience in the planning, preparation, presentation and dining of various fine cuisines under the direction of a professional chef. Its motto is: Gastronomie et Fraternite – from Friendship to Gastronomy
The tradition of a group of gentlemen inviting culinary professionals to lead them in preparing elaborate meals began in Europe many years ago and was introduced to North America 40 years ago. The word "marmiton" is French and means a kitchen boy, or chef's helper. With the growing interest in food and wine, membership continues to expand and benefit from traditions of promoting friendship and gastronomy.
Les Marmitons Atlanta was inducted in 1996, and its members have prepared over 160 dinners supervised by local chefs. Recent guest chefs include A.J. Jones with Milton’s, Laz Tenreiro of Lazaro’s Cuban Cuisine in Roswell, Sean Ford with Prime 120, Noah Bazarte of A&M Kitchen, Mike Gambini of North End Kitchen and Michael Bologna of Vingenzo’s. Les Marmitons members pay an annual membership fee and are provided with a chef’s jacket, apron and toque which they wear at each dinner.

LIFESTYLE STAFF
Prior to each dinner, members review the menu which usually consists of an appetizer, salad course, one or two entrees and dessert – each accompanied by the evening’s wine program. A fee is charged to cover the cost of groceries and wine.
Attendees are divided into teams, led by a team leader, with the responsibility of preparing, cooking and serving a specific course under the guest chef’s supervision. Team assignments rotate, and members take turns captaining each team. A typical Les Marmitons dinner begins around 5 p.m., with members enjoying wine and appetizers, meeting the guest chef, listening to an overview of the evening's menu and discussing the timeline for meal preparation and service. During meal preparation, the chef moves around the kitchen, offering guidance and sharing expertise with groups. Members are free to observe different teams to witness the preparation of other courses. After each course is plated and served, members gather in the dining room to enjoy the food and wine, listen to

Over the years, the Les Marmitons Atlanta chapter has prepared its dinners in several professional kitchens, including Chattahoochee Technical College, St. David’s Episcopal Church in Roswell and the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Marietta, which the chapter currently calls home. Les Marmitons Atlanta boasts close to 40 members, with half of its members hailing from the Cobb County/Roswell/ Alpharetta areas.

JIM
TAYLOR, MARIETTA MEMBER SINCE 2017
"I was sitting at a carwash one day and came upon an article about this men's cooking club with a funny French name that met monthly in a professionally equipped church kitchen. Recently returned from a Culinary workshop in Napa, I had caught the "cooking bug." Further, I'd just retired and the fellowship aspect of meeting new folks with similar interests intrigued me. That was over eight years ago. Since that time I've met a bunch of great guys who have become close friends and created incredible dishes that I never thought I'd ever be able to prepare."
What was your most memorable dish?
"It was actually my biggest fail. On my first night as a member, we had a "colorful" Greek chef whose approach was to throw newbies into the water to see if we could swim. My assignment was to prepare a Greek-style grilled octopus dish which I attempted to prepare on a Weber charcoal grill. Well the thing quickly got out of hand and to say it was like chewing rubber bands would be an understatement. More like copper wire..."

Zoomin’ Groomin’
After a long career in the corporate world, Paul Urfi decided it was time for a change, not just in what he did but why he did it. He and his wife, Tauna, created Zoomin’ Groomin’ to provide mobile pet grooming that’s convenient for owners and gentle for pets.
“During my years in big tech, I'd fumble through explaining my work that seemed important but ultimately left me wondering, 'Does this really matter?',” Urfi muses. “Now, when someone asks what I do, I can look them in the eye and say with genuine pride, 'I serve others and their furry family members.'”
Urfi’s favorite part of the job is connection, whether he’s helping solve a problem, seeing a dog light up after a fresh groom or hearing a busy family breathe a sigh of relief because he made their day a little easier.
Urfi also supports local pet adoption efforts by volunteering for organizations like Mostly Mutts, donates grooming services to raise money for charity and collaborates with small businesses to strengthen the local economy.

HONORING THESE SAILORS, MARINES AND WOUNDED WARRIORS, JIMMY BUFFET BROUGHT SURPRISE, MUSIC, JOY AND UNWAVERING SUPPORT TO THOSE WHO SERVE

AMERICAN HERO SAILS IN
Everyone I know loved Jimmy Buffett and has stories about good times shared at his shows. My memory of the U.S. Navy has nothing to do with music or fun times. It’s a part of his life that most people don’t know, but I consider him more than just a great musician and
we were being tested and didn’t panic. The chance of that type of detection was about as likely as seeing a school of mermaids. However, as that class of submarines carried nuclear warheads, torpedoes and other armaments, we didn’t take it lightly. We noted it in

entertainer. He is a patriot, hero and an American treasure. This occurred toward the end of the Cold War with the former Soviet Union and sounds like something Tom Clancy would have written, but it's a true story.
While serving as an Electronic Warfare Technician in mid-1980 aboard the Second Fleet Command Ship, USS Mount Whitney, I participated in Refresher Training off Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after a stint in the Norfolk Shipyards for upgrades.
Training was hot, tiring, grueling, and you had to be alert and balanced because drills came at all hours. You had to be prepared for anything. I thought I was, but there are certain things you can’t anticipate. On an otherwise routine day, one of my shipmates reported highly unusual signals and frequencies that appeared to be transmitting from a Soviet-era ballistic missile submarine. As they were emanating from the surface and not moving, rather than from a sub that should be running silent and deep, it was improbable. We figured
the logbook, got out manuals to do research and continued to keep an eye on it, but generally dismissed it.
Minutes later, a radioman began banging on the door. Announcing he had received a radio message on a civilian frequency from a guy on a yacht claiming to be Jimmy Buffett who was reporting a Soviet submarine sitting at the surface. He wanted to know if we could confirm it. We then bolted into action. This was no drill or war game. It was serious.
Our senior chief petty officer was alerted and was skeptical but listened intently. He walked into the Combat Information Center to inform the admiral’s watch captain, a Navy legend, Captain James “Red” Best. We waited for the chief to return with instructions and never imagined what was next. Suddenly, the hatch slammed open, and together with our chief was Captain Best. He was known for his salty ways, he was both loved and feared. Captain Best wanted to hear firsthand what we knew. When the radioman told him that

someone claiming to be Jimmy Buffett reported an unusual but specific sighting, Best exploded! “If Jimmy Buffett says there is a Soviet sub sitting on the surface, then there is! He knows what

he is talking about!” He returned to the CIC to alert our ship’s captain, Larry Lubbs, Second Fleet Commander, Vice Admiral Henry “Hank” Mustin, Navy “royalty” and at the time one of the most famous and decorated military families in history.
What happened next was intense, the most serious moment in my career and what we trained for. General Quarters was sounded, and all hands manned their battle stations. Mine was on the ship’s main deck, I was responsible for the chaff launcher.
It launches electronic countermeasures designed to lure hostile missiles away from ships under attack by creating false targets. It was the stuff you see in movies, and I liked it for the thrill, but mostly because I could get fresh air and a view after being inside the tin can for so long.
Monitoring what was going on below deck by radio, I saw with my own eyes that an impressive yacht was allowed to pull up alongside us, and off stepped

bridge by Best, where he talked to our ship’s captain, and then CIC, where he briefed the senior staff.
From my vantage point, I witnessed various U.S. fighters and attack planes moving in. While I couldn’t see it, I was aware that our constant companion supporting the admiral’s flagship, the submarine USS Bonefish, was just below the water’s surface, ready. It was undoubtedly keeping close tabs on its Soviet counterpart, which had been forced to surface due to some unknown mass casualty event. (An ironic sidenote is that over a year later, the USS Bonefish suffered explosions and fire in her battery compartment operating in the Caribbean, killing three. The Bonefish surfaced, and orders were given to abandon ship since the fire spread quickly, with dense smoke. She was decommissioned a few months later.)
What happened with that Soviet sub and crew, I certainly don’t know. I’m sure it was unpleasant. I didn’t

have a need to know, and there are just certain things you don’t ask.
Jimmy eventually disembarked our ship, and I watched his yacht pull away as we departed. When I returned to my station, my shipmates had questions and accounts for me, as I did for them. They told me they were shocked to see ANY civilian, much less Jimmy Buffett, walking through passageways, especially under the circumstances. I learned over the years that Jimmy Buffett was always a fan of the Navy. He had wanted to go to the Naval Academy and applied to Officer Candidate School but was denied due to a health issue. But his love and support for our military, particularly for the Navy, endured.
In 2018, Jimmy Buffett was presented the highest award that can be given to a civilian by the Secretary of the Navy. The citation read, in part: “For Superior Public Service in recognition of the exceptional and wide-ranging contributions made to the Department of the Navy, Mr. Buffett is an unwavering supporter of the men, women, and families of the Navy and Marine Corps. His dedicated service to our Sailors, Marines, wounded warriors, and civilians ensured that they were provided highly visible support and gratitude that greatly enhanced morale and welfare across the Department.”
This proud Navy veteran will, more than all his concerts and songs, always remember my brief encounter with this American hero in a way that few others ever have.

Our Favorite Bourbons
The “Best Bourbon” Is Truly Up To The Individual and Occasion
ARTICLE
BY ANTHONY ADAMS
We were recently asked to suggest the Best Bourbon that was affordable and as I reflected on my list of favorites, providing a single answer wasn’t as straightforward as it appeared. Think of it like this. If we asked 100 people in our community what their favorite restaurant is—the answers would be varied based on the individual’s personal palate or even the moment you asked them in!
Here is our list of favorites that will have you covered at any price point and occasion.
BLANTON’S SINGLE BARREL BOURBON
Blanton’s is recognizable on sight due to the round bottle with a brass horse and jockey for a stopper. Taken from the center-cut or middle sections of the famous Warehouse H. The taste profile is sweet, with notes of citrus and oak. The creamy vanilla nose is teased with caramel and butterscotch, all underscored by familiar baking spices such as clove, nutmeg, or cinnamon.
— BlantonsBourbon.com
BASIL HAYDEN’S RYE BOURBON –AGED 10 YEARS
In a sea of cask-strength offerings, Basil Hayden’s stays true to its 80 proof roots. The high rye content of its mash bill charges the nose and palate with notes of caraway and spice, while 10 years in the barrel have added leather and an attractive nuttiness. If you aren’t looking for high proof, this is a remarkable bourbon.
— BasilHaydens.com
PINHOOK ‘BOURBON WAR’ VERTICAL SERIES 5 YEARS
Pinhook pulls 150 barrels from a special lot to create this straight bourbon whiskey with a lively nose of butterscotch,
cinnamon stick, licorice, and vanilla. These aromas set the stage for a robust palate of cherry, chocolate, toasted brown sugar, and chicory. With the additional 5th year of age, what was tropical fruit transitions to darker fruit flavors and what was brighter candy is now rich and caramelized; hints of smoke now start to appear for the first time.
— PinhookBourbon.com
EAGLE RARE 10 YEAR
Eagle Rare 10 Year lives somewhat in the shadow of its 17-yearold elder sibling, but don’t let that shy you away. This is a sweet and mellow bourbon with definite signs of maturity and its orange peel and toffee aromas are a little shy, but the palate serves sturdy sweet and spice notes and a toasty finish.
— EagleRare.com
OLD FORESTER 86 PROOF
While others in Old Forester’s impressive lineup claim the hearts of bourbon geeks (such as the 1920 Prohibition Style), this bottle stands head and shoulders above everything at this proof and price point. It oozes aromatic charm and follows with a palate that is lithe but in no way lacking flavor.
— OldForester.com
MCAFEE’S BENCHMARK OLD NO. 8
Sometimes you find a $20 laying around or just need a good mixing bourbon. Benchmark Old No. 8 is made at the same distillery as Blanton’s and the ever-coveted Pappy Van Winkle! The nose bears caramel notes with a delicate stone-fruit backdrop. A robust and sturdy palate with some fine leather notes mingling with dry tobacco, a touch of oak, and a hint of dried cherries. The finish is smooth and calming.
