Letter From the Editor

The holiday season is here!

When I look back on the holidays of my childhood, I remember putting up our tree on Thanksgiving, gleefully writing my letters to Santa, and playing a new board game with my mom and brother every Christmas morning. A lot has changed since then, but surprisingly, so much has stayed the same.

My mom still picks a new game for us to play on Christmas morning, my favorite tradition to this day. I’ll still stop to admire any Christmas tree I see, although I’ve given up on having my own (my three cats won that battle). Most importantly, I’m surrounded by people I love in a community that has provided me with so much support and opportunity.

No matter what you celebrate, the holidays are a chance to rediscover the joy we felt as children, whether through the twinkle of festive lights, the aroma of family-favorite dishes, or cherished traditions.

In our December issue, we have several feature stories to get you in the holiday spirit. We celebrate West Cobb Funeral Home & Crematory’s 30th anniversary and learn why West Cobb families trust them year after year during their hardest moments. We also sat down with Charlie Duvalle Jr. to tell you about the closeknit family team behind Painting Plus.

The people are what make our community so special. Read on to meet two of our older residents still active in the community, David and Anne Strand, and one of our youngest, pre-professional dancer Lucy Webb.

We’ve also highlighted the best of what West Cobb has to offer during the holidays, from events and entertainment to the best holiday light displays in town. Whether you’re hosting a big holiday party or an intimate gathering, we’ve compiled delectable food and festive drink recipes for you to share and enjoy.

However you choose to spend the season, I hope it’s merry and bright.

Warmest regards,

December 2025

Oysters Rockefeller

Oysters Rockefeller

Oysters Rockefeller was created in 1889 at Antoine's Restaurant in New Orleans, the oldest family-owned restaurant in the United States. Jules Alciatore, son of founder Antoine Alciatore, developed the dish during a shortage of escargot, substituting oysters. Rich and

• 1 cup grated Romano cheese

• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

• 1/8 teaspoon pepper

• 3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs

• 2 pounds kosher salt

• 3 dozen fresh oysters in the shell, washed

• Lemon wedges for garnish

flavorful, Oysters Rockefeller was designed to evoke the sense of wealth and opulence of John D. Rockefeller, the richest American man of the time. While the original recipe remains a secret, countless versions just like this one have been created to pay homage.

DIRECTIONS

1. Sauté onion in butter until tender. Add spinach and stir until wilted.

2. Remove from heat and stir in cheese, lemon juice, and pepper.

3. Spread kosher salt onto 2 ungreased 15x10inch baking sheets.

4. Shuck oysters, reserving the oyster and liquid in the bottom shell.

5. Press the oyster shells into the salt, top each with 2 teaspoons of spinach mixture, and sprinkle with panko breadcrumbs

6. Bake uncovered at 450° until oysters are plump, about 6-8 minutes.

7.Garnish and serve immediately.

Making Cobb Homes Beautiful

We spoke with Charlie Dallavale Jr., president of Painting Plus, to learn about why the company remains one of North Atlanta’s top general contractors.

CAN YOU SHARE MORE ABOUT A PROJECT, TEACHER, OR MENTOR THAT SOLIDIFIED YOUR CAREER PATH?

My grandfather was a siding contractor, so it started with the family. I did learn a lot of it through Walton High School's building construction program. Bob Overstreet was the shop teacher. We used to build kids' play forts and sheds, then sell them to a third-party company.

TELL US ABOUT A RECENT PROJECT YOU’RE PROUD OF. WHY DOES THAT PROJECT STAND OUT TO YOU?

We just wrapped up a really special project in Sandy Springs. The homeowners felt the exterior was dated and didn’t reflect the way they used the space. They wanted something more inviting and cohesive, especially in the backyard. We installed a brand-new roof and gutter system, replaced the siding, and coated the existing brick with Romabio masonry coating to give it a more natural finish. From there, we focused on outdoor living. We extended the back porch, built a screen room, added a glass sunroom, and created a new fireplace and seating area. It’s a place where you can have coffee, host gatherings, or sit around a fire on a cool night. It completely changed how the family lives in the house.

HOW DOES PAINTING PLUS STAND OUT FROM OTHER GENERAL CONTRACTORS?

We treat our clients’ homes as if they were our own personal property. What I would do for a relative, I'm going to do for a paying client. I'm very tight with my money, and I try to stay tight with their money too.

PAINTING PLUS HAS RECEIVED JAMES HARDIE’S PRESIDENT’S CLUB AWARD EVERY YEAR SINCE 2015. WHAT’S THE KEY TO DELIVERING EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS YEAR AFTER YEAR?

We’ve built a close-knit team that’s been together for years, and everyone takes pride in doing things the right way. They care about their reputation just as much as I do. We also follow the James Hardie specifications and ensure every detail meets their standards. On top of that, we communicate. We go over the project with the homeowner at the beginning, during, and at the end. If something needs to be improved, we fix it before we leave. We treat the home like it’s our own and treat the client like family.

WHAT TOOLS OR PRODUCTS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT RIGHT NOW?

I’m excited about the James Hardie TimberHue collection. It gives homeowners the look of natural-stained wood siding, but without the maintenance of real wood. Anyone who has owned a real wood exterior in Georgia knows that between humidity, sun exposure, and carpenter bees, you’re constantly repairing, re-staining, and replacing boards. TimberHue solves that. It’s a fiber cement siding that’s pre-finished with a wood-grain stain appearance, so you get the character and depth of real wood. It doesn’t fade like a traditional stain, warp, rot, or attract insects.

Working with family changes the way you approach a job. When your dad, brother, and closest friend are there with you, you don’t cut corners, because you’d be letting down the people who helped you get there.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO WORK WITH FAMILY?

One thing I’m most grateful for in this business is the fact that I’ve been able to build it alongside the people closest to me. Not everyone gets that opportunity, and I don’t take it for granted. I’ve been working with my dad for more than 17 years, my brother for 15, and my best friend for 27. Working with family changes the way you approach a job. When your dad, brother, and closest friend are there with you, you don’t cut corners, because you’d be letting down the people who helped you get there.

ARE THERE ANY CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS YOUR FAMILY OR THE STAFF AT PAINTING PLUS FOLLOW?

We host a company Christmas lunch for everyone. At home, Christmas has always been a big deal for us, too. My dad, brother, and I have kept a lot of the same traditions from when we were kids. We get together, cook, and swap gifts, but really, it’s about being in the same room the same way we are at work.

MARKING 30 YEARS of Service

West Cobb Funeral Home & Crematory celebrates its 30th anniversary

ARTICLE BY ANA MARKOSI

David Roach opened West Cobb Funeral Home & Crematory in 1995 with the intent to provide service to anyone who may need assistance with the financial or special needs that can arise with the death of a loved one. Thirty years later, the business has grown to meet the community's needs and adapted to an ever-changing industry. Throughout it all, though, its values remain the same: honesty, transparency, and integrity.

Both David Roach and Chris Messina, general manager, started their careers in funeral service at a young age. Roach began a career in funeral service at age 15, working at Pasley Fletcher Funeral Home in Thomaston. He returned to Cobb County in 1984 to manage Winkenhofer-McCurdy Funeral Home in Smyrna until 1993, when he decided to open a new funeral home in West Cobb. After graduating from Osborne High School in 1986, Messina began a humble career in funeral service by washing cars at WinkenhoferMcCurdy Funeral Home, where he met Roach, his manager. He continued his career with Winkenhofer Funeral Homes until 2005, when Roach hired him to join him at West Cobb Funeral Home & Crematory in 2006.

The industry has changed tremendously since the pair began their careers. One such change is a dramatic increase in demand for cremation services. “In Georgia during the 1980s, the cremation rate was probably two to three percent of the families we served,” Messina says. “Today, our cremation rate is right around 60 percent of the families we serve.” The West Cobb Funeral Home & Crematory began offering cremation in 2008.

Both Roach and Messina have taken active roles at the state level. David was twice appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to serve on the Georgia State Board of Funeral Service, where he formerly served as Chairman. Roach has also served as President of the Independent Funeral Directors of Georgia and the Academy of Graduate Embalmers of Georgia. Messina has recently been asked to serve as District Chair for the Georgia Funeral Directors Association.

David Roach
“Our promise is to instill the traditional values that funeral service was built on in the next generation of funeral directors, whom we welcome as part of our staff,”

Celebrating West Cobb Funeral Home & Crematory’s 30th anniversary during the holiday season brings a lot of emotion for Roach and Messina as they reflect on the families they’ve served and the people who have made it all possible. “We could not do what we do, day in and day out, without our incredible and dedicated staff,” Messina remarks. “We are truly blessed with funeral directors, office and support staff who are focused and dedicated to making sure every family gets what they deserve. We all feel as though our God given purpose in life is to serve others during their most difficult times. Second, we would not be here after 30 years as one of the most respected funeral homes in our area without the relationships that we have built with our community leaders, local churches, pastors, hospice groups, and the families that continue to come back to us when they have a need for our services.”

The staff at West Cobb Funeral Home & Crematory remains committed to providing modern services with traditional values for years to come. “Our promise is to instill the traditional values that funeral service was built on in the next generation of funeral directors, whom we welcome as part of our staff,” Messina says. “Our decades of knowledge and working side-by-side with another generation we trust will allow us to continue to serve the families of West Cobb Funeral Home with the same values for the next 30 years.”

DAVID AND ANNE'S NEW CHAPTER AT STERLING ESTATES

Living a Sterling Life

“For David and Anne, Sterling Estates isn’t just where they live. It’s where they belong.”

David and Anne Strand’s story began at Michigan State University. Anne was completing her master’s degree in education, while David just received a National Science Foundation scholarship. A chance meeting became a lifelong partnership.

The couple built fulfilling lives in the Marietta area, including years of volunteer work at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, where they trained trail ambassadors and secured grants for educational programs for thousands of visitors.

When construction began on Sterling Estates of West Cobb, just four miles from their home, David and Anne saw an opportunity to begin a new chapter with fewer household responsibilities and more time for health, happiness, and community. Among the first residents at Sterling Estates, they downsized from their 5,500-square-foot home to a spacious cottage with a two-car garage, garden, and plenty of room for their beloved Siberian Husky.

Sterling Estates of West Cobb, along with its sister community, Sterling Estates of East Cobb, is locally owned and managed by a group of partners who have been in the senior living industry since 1988. The philosophy at Sterling Estates is simple. “We build and operate our communities to what we or our parents would want,” Mike Brown, partner, explains.

At Sterling, David and Anne discovered a vibrant lifestyle, playing bocce ball and joining different men’s and women’s clubs. The pair even created an independent resident directory to help new neighbors connect. The Wellness Center also became central to their routine, helping Anne improve her mobility through a tailored fitness program and supporting David’s recovery after knee surgery.

They’ve been deeply involved in the community throughout the years. David teaches a 20th-century

U.S. History course to fellow residents, and Anne writes a column for the community’s monthly independent residents’ newsletter, The Siren.

They’ve even helped form a partnership between Sterling Estates and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, where veterans from Sterling share their stories as part of the park’s educational program.

For David and Anne, Sterling Estates isn’t just where they live. It’s where they belong. “We say prayers every day, thankful that we made this move. It’s the best thing we’ve ever done,” David and Anne share.

The grounds at Sterling Estates are picturesque, including spacious sidewalks, green spaces, patios, and courtyards. The West Cobb location spans more than 28 acres and includes 61 independent cottages, 50 independent apartments, and 90 apartments offering various levels of assistance. The property also includes a 44-unit standalone memory care residence, The Grande at Sterling Estates. Because life at Sterling Estates is about staying active, amenities include a 7,500-square-foot wellness center with an indoor heated saltwater pool, exercise facilities, and a calendar of fun activities for residents.

Resident happiness is part of what keeps Mike Brown and the rest of the Sterling Estates team working on the mission, and Cobb County has taken notice. Sterling Estates has received numerous accolades, including the coveted Best of Cobb Awards seven years in a row from 2019 to 2025.

“We are extremely proud and thankful for this achievement,” Brown says. “We believe this recognition is a testament to the quality of our staff and to their dedication to our residents, as they deliver superior care and services to our residents at both communities, living a ‘Sterling Life.’”

Behind the Curtain

At just 15 years old, Lucy Webb has made strides as a student dancer on the pre-professional track at the Georgia Ballet. She’s performed various roles in productions of The Nutcracker, including a Chinese dancer, a mouse, and Fritz. This year, she makes her lead debut as Clara. We sat down with her to learn more about her life as a dancer behind the scenes.

A CONVERSATION WITH LUCY WEBB

"I'M MOST EXCITED TO DANCE IN THE PARTY SCENE. I JUST LOVE THE MUSIC AND THE VARIATION THERE."

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DANCING, AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH THE GEORGIA BALLET?

I’ve been dancing for about nine years now, and I’ve been with the ballet for five years.

IS DANCE MORE OF AN ART FORM, A SPORT, OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH FOR YOU?

I think it’s both. When I’m training, I definitely focus on the athletic side, but when I go on stage, I get to embody a character.

DO YOU GET STAGE FRIGHT, AND IF SO, HOW DO YOU HANDLE IT?

I definitely do. They say nerves and excitement are the same feeling; you just have to pick one. We perform shows for the school and for the public. I find the public shows a lot scarier. I use the 5-4-3-2-1 method to deal with the anxiety. It’s when you find five things you can see, four things you can  touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste.

HOW DO YOU GET YOURSELF INTO CHARACTER TO PERFORM A ROLE?

I’ve been listening to the music a lot to prepare and trying to imagine myself at the party.

WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT FOR THIS ROLE?

I'm most excited to dance in the party scene. I just love the music and the variation there. There's a lot of acting that we get to do in the party scene, which is also fun. I get a little bit of freedom because I kind of get to make it up. I think I'm going to like doing the Chinese dance, too. That one has really hard turns and a little duet. I’m also excited because my costumes are blue. It’s my favorite color. Clara’s dresses are usually pink, which is actually my least favorite color.

The Georgia Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker runs from December 18 to 23 at The Jennie T. Anderson Theatre. Visit georgiaballet.org to view show times, purchase tickets, and learn more.
