Sweet Holidays

The holiday season has a special way of bringing out the child in all of us. From the twinkle of lights to the smell of cookies in the oven, it’s a time that invites nostalgia, joy and a sense of community. This issue celebrates those simple pleasures—from the local makers who craft the flavors of the season to a nonprofit that shows us how to honor loved ones we’ve lost during the holidays. We want to help make your December shine a little brighter this year.

One of my favorite stories in this month’s issue takes us behind the scenes at a local candy company to see how candy canes are made. When my sons were younger, we loved watching the show Unwrapped together. We were fascinated by the giant vats of sugar, intricate techniques for adding flavors and colors and the step-by-step process behind crafting our favorite treats. A few times we even tried to recreate at home what we saw. Our kitchen experiments didn’t quite look like the perfect candies on TV, but the laughter, sticky fingers and sweet memories were worth every attempt.

That’s really what this season is all about—finding joy in the process, not perfection. Whether you’re baking, decorating or simply pausing to take in the magic around you, I hope this issue inspires you to slow down, savor the moment and celebrate the beauty of community and tradition.

From all of us at West Chester + Liberty Lifestyle, we wish you peace, joy and just the right amount of sweetness this holiday season.

Happy Holidays!

Doscher’s Candies Keeps Cincinnati’s Heritage Delicious

The holidays sparkle a little brighter in Cincinnati thanks to a family-owned candy maker that’s been delighting generations since 1871. Inside Doscher’s Candies, copper kettles still bubble, peppermint fills the air and the same hands-on craft that began more than a century ago continues to define one of America’s oldest sweet shops—proving that some traditions never lose their flavor.

“Claus Doscher created his first candy cane using the best tools known to man— his hands,” says owner Amy Gilligan, who runs the business with her husband, Kevin. “We still use the same recipe, same kettles and same techniques from pulling and kneading to striping and hooking. I truly think it’s our small-batch approach that has helped the business endure.”

Gilligan and her husband joined Doscher’s in 2015 after meeting longtime owner Greg Clark.

“We were looking for a small, family-run business to be part of,” Gilligan explains.  Together with her parents and two brothers, they partnered with Clark to grow the brand. The business later moved from downtown Cincinnati to Newtown, where they built a new facility, coffee shop and gift store. At the beginning of this year, they took full ownership—marking a new chapter in the company’s long, sweet history.

Today, a team of six candy makers keeps Claus’s legacy alive behind the factory walls, while a friendly front-of-house crew greets guests with coffee, confections and conversation. Best known for its handcrafted candy canes, Doscher’s candies are a holiday staple at Kroger and a fan favorite on QVC. The addition of Candy Buttons has drawn a whole new crowd.

“We purchased that brand from Necco in 2018,” Gilligan shares. “They’re a fun, happy and eye-catching candy that appeals to children—and brings back memories of penny candy.”

This red machine rolls + stretches the warm candy into a long strip that gets snipped into canes + hand-bent into hooks.
Kevin + Amy Gilligan, owners of Doscher's Candies since 2015.

Doscher's light + airy candy canes start as a fifty-pound blob of cooked sugar that gets pulled + stretched until it turns silky white.

While honoring the past, the Gilligans continue to innovate with new candy cane flavors like grape, blue raspberry, s’mores and birthday cake, turning seasonal treats into year-round favorites.

“Growth is important, but we never compromise quality,” says Gilligan. “Our biggest priority is keeping the integrity of our products.”

For Gilligan, the sweetest part of her job is the heritage. “As someone who grew up here, it’s been fun to be so emotionally invested in a small piece of [Doscher’s] history,” she shares.

Moving locations has been equally rewarding.

“We feel like we exist in a Hallmark movie—the holidays here are special, the town is decorated to the nines and we all love to support one another’s businesses and families.”

Looking ahead, Doscher’s is working on new variations of its Pillows—a bite-sized version of a candy cane—and expanding its Candy Buttons line with fresh packaging and more local collaborations.

“We’ve [worked] with March First, Braxton Brewery, Tickled Sweet, the Candle Lab, Lucca, as well as several others to combine our flavors with their products.”

Add rum, cinnamon syrup, cream, egg, vanilla, and a pinch of nutmeg to a shaker. Shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds to emulsify the egg. INSTRUCTIONS:

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, cream, cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Whisk until smooth and heated through. Winter Wonderland

The holiday season is upon us, and no place captures that sparkling spirit quite like Very Merry Middletown, a joyful series of events that turns the city’s downtown into a winter wonderland.

“Very Merry Middletown stands out by offering something for every age, every budget, every family—all in one walkable, charming historic district,” says Avinne Kiser, founder and board president of Reimagine Middletown.

From ice skating and carriage rides to twinkling lights and a Santa parade, Very Merry Middletown features something to invigorate everyone’s holiday senses.

“It’s a place where everyone can feel the holiday magic together,” Kiser says of the series of events formerly known as Holiday Whopla. The group changed its name to Reimagine Middletown this year.

“Our nonprofit is still officially Holiday Whopla Inc., but we now operate as Reimagine Middletown,” Kiser shares. “The change reflects our long-term vision for expanded, yearround programming.”

The main attraction is Reimagine Ice Rink, an outdoor ice skating rink that, starting in 2026, will remain open year-round by transforming from ice skating in the winter to roller skating and pickleball in the warmer months.

“It’s a stunning outdoor rink surrounded by heated rental igloos and massive interactive light displays,” says Kiser. “It’s the centerpiece of the experience.”

The ice rink is not the only attraction. Light Up Middletown features 96 acres of drivethrough holiday light displays. Each year a devoted group of volunteers known as the Grandpa Gang brings the displays to life at Smith Park. This marks the 26th year of this holiday tradition. The attraction dazzles nightly from November 28 through December 31.

Very Merry Middletown’s calendar is packed with festive fun:

• Visits with Santa, Fridays & Saturdays, November 28–December 20: Share your wish list with Santa Claus.

• Santa Parade, November 29: The jolly parade winds through downtown and ends at Governor’s Square, where Santa himself lights the Christmas tree.

• Candlelight Tour of Homes, December 13: Peek inside beautifully decorated historic homes, each with its own unique holiday charm.

• Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides, December 13, 20 & 27: Enjoy an old-fashioned ride through downtown, surrounded by shimmering lights.

• Blitzen Cookie & Cocktail Walk, December 20: A walk featuring holiday cookies paired with cocktails that celebrate the season.

• Ice Skating, November 10–January 11: Take a spin on the ice. Join themed nights like Ugly Sweater, Grinch and even Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce night. Skating lessons are available, too.

• Igloo Rentals, Ongoing: Stay warm and cozy rinkside while enjoying the company of friends.

“Visitors often tell us it feels like stepping into a Hallmark movie,” Kiser says. “There’s sparkling lights, joyful music, festive activity everywhere and that warm sense of community you can’t help but feel.”

REFLECTIONS of LOVE

In the midst of all the cheer this time of year, the holidays can be a particularly lonely and difficult time for those who mourn. While the world celebrates with joy and togetherness, loss could make us feel broken and out of place. Grief expert Sheila Munafo-Kanoza, founder and executive director at Companions on a Journey (COJ) in West Chester, offers her tips for how to honor lost loved ones and navigate the emotions of grief during the holiday season.

“Grief is a natural response to loss,” explains Munafo-Kanoza.

“It's not a problem to be fixed. It's a journey of love and adjustment to change. It affects us emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually. The holidays can bring deep reminders of those who are missing.”

First and foremost, Munafo-Kanoza is an advocate for grace.

“We must be present to our feelings and give ourselves permission and grace to do what we need to do,” she says. “It’s okay to say ‘No,’ it’s okay to have laughter and it's okay to have tears–all the feelings are valid.”

Be sure to communicate with your family about expectations.

Grief Expert Sheila Munafo-Kanoza of Companions on a Journey Helps to Honor Loved Ones During the Holidays

“Grief can make you feel like the volume has been turned up during the holidays—you have every song, every smell, every tradition, flooding your memories.”

“Create a safe place to reflect and share and find meaning,” says MunafoKanoza. “It's good to plan ahead to decide where you want to go and how long you want to stay. Also, make sure that you get rest because grief is exhausting.”

The holidays are steeped in tradition. Munafo-Kanoza suggests embracing some new ways of celebrating.

“Holidays are filled with lots of rituals that remind us of our loved ones’ absence,” she says. “It's okay to change some of those traditions–they can be changed for one or two years and then you can go back the following year. You may even find a different time or a place that you want to celebrate.”

Don’t tiptoe around your loss—acknowledge it. Honor the memory of your loved one by saying their name at your gatherings. This opens the opportunity to share stories.

“When my husband died, I needed to hear his name; my children needed to hear his name,” Munafo-Kanoza explains. “There were tears, but eventually there was laughter. I’m grateful for the memories.”

Munafo-Kanoza guides mourners to honor loved ones with intention during the holidays.

“Light a candle in their honor, display a photo, hang up a special ornament, cook their favorite dish or visit a place that holds special memories,” she suggests. Many of COJ’s school groups decorate ornaments and place messages to their loved ones inside.

“Grief and joy can coexist. They're both reflections of love,” Munafo-Kanoza says. “We're all going to be touched by death, and there's going to be some deaths that have a bigger impact on our hearts than others. Know that you are not alone—you have Companions on a Journey to walk that journey with you.”

Founder + Executive Director  Companions on a Journey

Sheila Munafo-Kanoza knows what it’s like to walk with grief. Her experience as a young widow led her on a life path to found Companions on a Journey (COJ) and to serve as a trusted companion to help thousands through loss. Now in its 29th year, the nonprofit organization provides free grief support for people of all ages, including crisis response and community and training events. In 2024, they led 97 school groups in 66 schools, Lakota’s schools among them, and walked alongside nearly 1,700 others. Join COJ in its mission to surround the bereaved with hope, strength and healing. Pray, volunteer or make a donation online.

Elevating the Everyday, A Festive Fave From The Spicy Olive

wonderfully to the acidity and brightness of the mustard, combining to form a complex and well-balanced dish. Add the crispness of the farro and apple against the fattiness of the pork, and this salad is comfort on a plate!

Not to mention, this recipe basically only uses one skillet (minus cooking the farro). After pan-frying your pork in garlic olive oil, deglaze the skillet with white wine. Add mustard and vinegar to create depth and dimension to the pan sauce (and oh, what a sauce).

The simplicity with which this dish comes together, and the complexity of the flavors, from rich garlicky goodness to the punch of the vinegar and mustard, lend themselves to an easy comfort meal you won’t want to miss. Stop into The Spicy Olive to get your essential ingredients today, and wow your guests (or your family) with this seasonal delight!

The Spicy Olive’s Maple Pork Tenderloin with Farro, Apples + Arugula

INGREDIENTS

• 3 Tablespoons The Spicy Olive’s Vermont Maple Balsamic Vinegar

• 5 Tablespoons The Spicy Olive’s Garlic Olive Oil

• 2 teaspoons The Spicy Olive’s Champagne & Roasted Garlic Mustard

• 1 teaspoon garlic, chopped

• ½ cup farro

• 1 teaspoon kosher salt

• ½ teaspoon black pepper

• 1-pound pork tenderloin

• ½ cup dry white wine

• 3 cups baby arugula or mixed greens

• 1 red apple, unpeeled and sliced thin

DIRECTIONS

1. Whisk together 2 tablespoons of the balsamic vinegar, 2 tablespoons of the olive oil, 1 teaspoon of the mustard and the chopped garlic. Cook farro according to package directions. When cool, mix farro with the prepared dressing. Set aside.

2. Heat remaining 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium high heat. Gently pound the pork tenderloin between 2 pieces of wax paper to flatten slightly. Sprinkle tenderloin with salt and pepper. Add pork to skillet and cook until browned on all sides and just cooked through, about 2 minutes per side or when internal temperature reaches 145°F. Place pork on a cutting board to rest for 5 minutes. Slice into 12 pieces, then cover to keep warm.

3. Add wine to skillet and stir to remove brown bits from bottom of pan. Bring to a simmer, then reduce wine by half. Whisk in remaining 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar and 1 teaspoon of mustard. Let simmer for 1 minute.

4. Add arugula and apple slices to the dressed farro and mix well. Place a serving of the farro salad with slices of tenderloin on each plate. Drizzle the pork with the reduced sauce. Pairs well with one of The Spicy Olive’s selection of Pinot Noirs. Happy holidays and bon appétit!
