Fellow Tulsans,
I hope this letter finds you in high spirits and full of creative energy.

Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.
Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.
As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in [city] to uplift our spirits, boost your productivity and ignite your creativity.
What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.
Here’s to being uniquely you!

In the vibrant fashion scene of Oklahoma, Sapulpa's own MaKayla Bucktrot stands out not just for her unique designs but for her heartfelt connection to her heritage and community. Known for her brand, MaKs Knak, this young local artist’s work transcends fashion and embodies a deep respect and reverence for Indigenous traditions, along with a sincere passion for cultural expression.
MaKayla Bucktrot’s journey into the world of design is as humble as it is inspiring. "To be honest, I don’t consider myself a fashion designer because I’m simply just someone who knows how to make ceremonial regalia," she insists.
Raised by her grandparents Georgina and Boston Rowe, MaKayla began her creative path in her youth by first starting out making hand-sewn pillows from handkerchiefs and selling them with her grandmother's help. The pivotal moment came when her grandmother bought her a sewing machine, leading MaKayla to create her first ribbon skirt in her grandmother’s favorite color, purple, after her passing.
"I wasn’t as focused as I wanted to be, so I didn’t sew very often after she passed," MaKayla recalls. It wasn’t until high school — driven by her desire for a patchwork skirt she couldn’t afford — that MaKayla fully embraced sewing, using trial and error to create her own designs. Her skills were honed through a high school class, which provided the technical knowledge she needed to advance her craft.
The essence of MaKayla’s designs lies in their earthy, cultural-centric focus, deeply rooted in her Indigenous heritage. "I've made many items for stompdance. That’s usually when I see one of my skirts," she explains. With roots in a mix of tribes including Yuchi, Mvskoke, Pawnee, Iowa and Kialegee, her aim is to bring her own unique, organic twist to traditional clothing such as skirts, quilts, bags, vests, shawls — you name it.
Her thoughtful designs are not just about aesthetics; they are about creating pieces that resonate with cultural significance. "Different patterns and symbols can mean different things. For example, if a client is ‘wind clan,’ I would include a specific pattern of patchwork symbolizing their clan," she adds.

“I'd say the only challenges I've faced are within myself. Trying to showcase traditional designs, both old and new, in ways that have never been seen before.”
MaKayla’s design process is a blend of intuition and meticulous craftsmanship. "My first step in any piece is colors," she says. Depending on the client's preferences, she either takes creative freedom or follows specific color schemes guided by the color wheel. From there, she selects patterns of patchwork and potential ribbon placements.
"I never have a plan until I see the ribbons and the fabric in front of me; I literally can see the finished product in my head," MaKayla explains. The sewing process is both her most exciting and challenging part of her work.
Her choice of materials reflects a balance of tradition and practicality. "I prefer cotton fabric just because it’s soft and easy to work with when doing patchwork designs," she notes. This preference ensures her creations are comfortable, durable and true to the traditional aesthetics she aims to preserve.
Being an up-and-coming designer in Oklahoma does not come without its unique challenges, but MaKayla views these obstacles as opportunities for growth. "I'd say the only challenges I've faced are within myself. Trying to showcase traditional designs, both old and new, in ways that have never been seen before," she says.
Her work speaks volumes in various Indigenous communities, thanks to her dedication and the grassroots support she receives. One of her most rewarding projects to date has been creating new skirts and vests for her family for this year’s EaPAnA (Greencorn).
"I’m very lucky and grateful to still have elders in my life who are also artists," she shares. This project was a collaborative effort, with her great aunt and sister contributing their own designs and color choices — a true family affair.
“It’s through this grassroots effort from the Native community that my brand has been blessed with such success and growth.”
MaKayla’s engagement with her local community is a testament to her brand’s success and growth. She sees her work at different ceremonies around Oklahoma and on social media, where her creations are celebrated by those who wear them.
"It’s through this grassroots effort from the Native community that my brand has been blessed with such success and growth," she acknowledges.
Looking ahead, MaKayla’s goals for her fashion brand are both personal and communal. "As long as I have my
ceremonial grounds and my community, I'll always be here to share my art and, hopefully, one day pass it down to my future children and grandchildren," she says.
Exciting projects lie on the horizon for MaKayla, including designing and sewing her first wedding dress.
"I can't wait to start with the colors she chose," she says with enthusiasm, looking forward to the new creative challenge. “I’ve also been waiting to try out a new sleeve I came across — she will look beautiful.”
At the heart of MaKayla’s work is a deep respect for the pieces she creates. "Every time I design a piece, I make sure I’m in a good mindset and treat it with care and respect, because that piece may eventually be at a ceremony," she emphasizes.
Through her brand, MaKs Knak, and uniquely artistic vision, MaKayla Bucktrot continues to weave stories of cultural heritage and personal expression, one stitch at a time. For readers interested in exploring more of her work, you can find her designs on Facebook (MaKs Knak) and Instagram (@maks_knak).

Part hair down the center. Create pullthrough braids on each side of the head. Tie elastic at the end of the braids to create a ponytail at the nape of the neck. For extra volume in the buns, tease the hair in the ponytail before twisting it into a bun. Secure with hair pins and... Voilà!
Part the hair down the center or side part, if preferred. Create braid(s) on the side of the head and secure with elastic. Twist the hair with braids into a simple bun, securing it with hair pins. Add an accessory for a classy touch.

Place a bandana on the forehead and tie it in the back. Create as many braids as desired in the back of the head, teasing the ends to avoid using elastics.
Part a mohawk section of hair down the center of the head. Create a French braid down the middle. For a thicker-looking braid, gently pull on the strands working your way up and down the braid. Pull it back into a ponytail for a simple and trendy look.

HGTV star shares her secrets to make a home look both beautiful and livable.

Tamara Day, star of HGTV’s Bargain Mansions, describes her style as “laid-back luxe.”
“I am a mom of four, and I like pretty, shiny things,” Tamara says. “The two don’t always mix well. I design with lifestyle and family in mind but with that touch of glam.”
This mixture of practicality and flare can be accomplished throughout the home on a budget, Tamara says.
When it comes to the kitchen, she says replacing the backsplash is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh the room. Additionally, she says paint is the most inexpensive option to update cabinets, and there is a de-glosser on the market that will reduce the labor involved by helping paint adhere to cabinets.
“You can get a whole new kitchen with some fresh paint,” Tamara says.
In the bathroom, Tamara suggests putting up new light fixtures and wallpaper for a fresh look. She suggests using wallpaper on just one wall to create contrast.
“Wallpaper transforms everything and puts in a hominess factor,” Tamara says.
To give a new feel to the living room, Tamara suggests using decorative pillows as well as displaying design books and layering with a candle or other interesting object to create a sentimental focal point. She also suggests investing in good, quality sofas
and rugs because less expensive options will not typically withstand the amount of wear and tear they receive from a family.
Overall, Tamara says there is a balance between mixing expensive and inexpensive items and materials around the home, all without having it looking cluttered. She says every space needs something that is thrifted.
Tamara finds many people enjoy elements of different types of styles and have a hard time defining their personal style. To help narrow down to a preferred look, she suggests taking a hundred room images and sorting them into piles of likes and dislikes. She says when someone completes this exercise, they typically find a theme to their preferences.
Tamara has a natural eye for using great colors and textures in design. What is her approach to making a room look great?
HERE ARE TAMARA’S TOP TIPS:
Find a base color with pops of other colors.
“Every room needs a touch of black and a pop of color,” Tamara says. “The black will anchor it, but the color will give it life.”
If the home is urban, she suggests more bold pops. If it is a traditional home, use a mixture of colors. Additionally, she suggests using one basic color throughout a home with pops of other colors as opposed to having a different color in each room.
Consider wallpaper.
“Wallpaper can be scary for a lot of people, but there are so may wallpapers out there that are removable,” Tamara says.
Tamara says wallpaper adds texture and warmth, and she includes it in most of the homes she designs.
Layer with baskets, blankets and greenery. All three make a room feel cozy and add color and interest to a space.

• Window insulation strips
• Canvas
• Kilz Interior primer
• Staple gun
• Spray paint, color of choice
• Super glue, optional
Instructions:
Create the desired design using insulation strips. Simply peel off the sticky backing and attach to the canvas. Be sure to wrap each strip around the back and press firmly. Use a staple gun to secure strips to the back of the canvas. Add a dap of super glue to any curved areas that appear to loosen. Once your desired design is created, apply a thin coat of Kilz interior primer. Spray paint the entire canvas the color of choice that you would like. Allow to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.

This trend-forward DIY art piece adds texture and dimension to your walls and is easy enough for anyone to do regardless of artistic ability.
