Celebrating Family and Community in Tulsa

As I look back on this past year, one word keeps coming to mind: family.

At the start of the year, my wife Kendra and I moved back home to Tulsa to join our friends Brock and Macye in taking over Tulsa City Lifestyle. Kendra and I were thrilled, not just to be closer to our own family, but to begin the journey of building one of our own. We are expecting our first child this month—Sunday Joy—and the excitement of that new chapter has been both humbling and grounding.

We are also eager to build another kind of family here in Tulsa too. We want to create a space where readers and local businesses can connect, where the city’s spirit of collaboration and care can be celebrated. What draws people to Tulsa isn’t only the restaurants or shops, it’s the people—neighbors, entrepreneurs, families—who make it a place worth caring about.

Over the past few months, we’ve had the privilege of hearing countless stories — families building businesses from the ground up, legacies passed down through generations, and quiet accounts of hardship and unwavering dedication to a dream, often unnoticed by the world.

This year has taught us a lot—not just about running a publication, but about connection, resilience, and gratitude. It’s a lesson we carry into each issue, striving to reflect the warmth, creativity, and character of the people who call Tulsa home.

As we move forward, we hope to share even more of these stories, and we’d love to hear from you. If there’s a family, a business, or a story you think deserves to be celebrated, reach out. Let’s tell it together.

Warmly,

CORBIN ZALDIVAR, ACCOUNT MANAGER @TULSACITYLIFESTYLE

FIRST CALL:

TRUSTED CARE SINCE 1997

A LEGACY OF CARE, COMMUNITY, AND GRATITUDE

For nearly three decades, First Call has been a trusted name in in-home care and sitter services for family members, friends, and loved ones. Additionally, First Call provides staffing services for hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and assisted living facilities.

Founded in 1997 by Joe Wolfe and Chris Sanders, the company is a Home Care Agency that is licensed, insured, and bonded, providing Home Health Aides and skilled care that emphasizes compassion, consistency, and community.

“Our culture was created 28 years ago,” shared Mark Penny, Account Manager for First Call, “and with that culture, our leadership set a vision rooted in consistency. A lot of our former clients mention the reliability of our staff and their level of experience. That’s what sets us apart.”

At its core, First Call is more than a staffing company—it’s a lifeline of peace of mind for families. From providing licensed and certified caregivers who support loved ones in memory care units to offering companionship to individuals whose families live out of town, the team prioritizes personal connection. As Susan McKemy, Vice President of Operations, explained, “There’s a peace of mind from the very first visit by our nurse and through the ongoing follow-up from our amazing coordinators. That’s what makes the difference.”

Stories of impact abound. One caregiver, arriving for a routine shift, discovered a client’s family member in distress. Acting quickly, she called 911, ultimately saving the client’s family member’s life. “When you knock it out of the park like that, it’s just a good feeling,” reflected Penny. “It lets us know we’re providing what people truly need.”

But it’s not just the clients who benefit—it’s the staff, too. Many employees have stayed with First Call for decades, with some caregivers surpassing 25 years of service. Others have grown from field staff into office leadership, carrying forward the culture of care they experienced firsthand. “I moved from the West Coast to work for this company three years ago, and it was the best career decision I’ve ever made,” said McKemy. “At the end of the day, we fulfill some part of someone’s life—and that’s what I’m grateful for.”

Gratitude is a word that comes up often among the team. “We are a family,” noted Jennifer Tyrl, Tulsa Branch Manager. “We say ‘welcome to the First Call family,’ whenever someone new joins. That bond helps us provide excellent care.”

Looking ahead, the staff is optimistic. Tara Ellis, Recruiting Specialist for First Call, summed it up best: “What we do can’t be replaced by artificial intelligence. Empathy, human touch, showing up—those things endure. And we’re grateful to keep serving Tulsa for the next 30 years and beyond.

TARA ELLIS: “I’m grateful to be on the First Call Team because of the strong sense of purpose, the incredible support from teammates, and the opportunity to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact together every day.”

ELLA, RN: “Joe, Susan, and Jennifer—our leaders. When I first started in office, I mentioned I was a vegetarian. For the first time, out of 35 years working, those three remembered. I have always felt I work with people who care.”

SUSAN MCKEMY: “I’m thankful to be with a company that not only takes pride in delivering excellent client care, but also values and appreciates all who make that care possible. I am grateful for our amazing team, who genuinely care about what we do.”

BRENDA WILSON: “I am grateful for each and every one of my coworkers, with whom I share more moments with than my own family. I cherish the time we spend together, our growth motivates me to do better each day.”

JENNY: “I’m thankful for the chance to connect compassionate caregivers with those in need. Each placement is a reminder that kindness and care can change lives – and I get to be a part of that every day.”

TERESA BENNETT: “I am very grateful to be a part of a team that cares about the integrity and honesty that First Call offers, to exceed the expectations in providing the highest level of services to all.”

JENNIFER TYRL: “First Call is more than just a team. First Call is truly a family. We all work as a family unit. I am grateful that I get to come to work each day with new opportunities to embrace. It is never boring!”

WANDA MCKINNEY: “I’m grateful for being a part of a family-oriented company. First Call gives back to employees and honors those that go above and beyond their duty. Much love is felt. The leadership is outstanding and wonderful. Clients are celebrated during birthdays and holidays. Great services are provided to clients and field staff.”

MARY ANN GRESHAM: “I am grateful to contribute to caring for those with physical and mental needs. I love meeting and working with new and existing employees and clients. I love my First Call family!”

MARK PENNY: “I am thankful for the culture established by our leadership. Both our office staff and field staff have the drive to provide an experience that has kept our clients coming back for 28 years for exceptional service demands.”

ALMETRA BAILEY: “The support and welcoming atmosphere at the Tulsa location have been incredible, and I can honestly say it feels like home. I chose First Call because of its strong reputation for valuing both employees and clients, and they deliver on that promise every day.”

LISA HARGER: “I am grateful for my remarkable coworkers and the pride we all share in finding the best caregivers for our clients. Here at First Call, we are family.”

TAMMY: “I’m so very grateful for the love and friendships that have been created between office staff and field staff. I’m also grateful for the amazing leadership in the office.”

HERITAGE STRONG

American Heritage Bank’s Legacy Guides Growth, Service, and Community Connections

When American Heritage Bank first opened its doors more than a century ago, the world looked very different. Farmers and shopkeepers were its earliest customers, and the bank quickly became a cornerstone of small-town life. In the 1920s, stewardship passed to the Berry family, beginning a multigenerational story of community banking that has now spanned nearly five generations.

That history has been defined by steady growth and unwavering values. Through the Great Depression, American Heritage stood by its neighbors, providing stability when times were uncertain. In the decades that followed, the bank stayed true to its roots, helping finance homes, businesses, and schools that would shape the future of Sapulpa and beyond. More recently, American Heritage has completed five acquisitions in the last 13 years—remarkably, without a single layoff. Instead, employees were welcomed and their compensation and benefits improved, reinforcing the idea that people, not just profits, are at the heart of the Berry family’s vision.

CONTINUED >

For Bill Berry, that philosophy remains central: “We’re going to be as strong as our communities.” From Sapulpa to the fast-growing Tulsa Metroplex, the family has encouraged employees to be active citizens, serving on boards, coaching little league teams, and volunteering in countless local initiatives. It is a culture built not just in boardrooms, but in neighborhoods and church halls.

The Berry family’s guiding principles—passed down from their grandfather—still echo today: be absolutely honest, live thriftily, and work like hell. These simple but enduring lessons have

become the compass for decision-making, whether navigating growth or staying true to a promise of personal service.

That promise shows up in small, everyday ways. At American Heritage, phones aren’t routed to distant call centers. They’re answered by people like Roberta, a longtime employee who has become something of a local celebrity for her cheerful voice on the other end of the line. “It’s one of those things that sets us apart,” shared Jennifer Berry Dilley, emphasizing that even as artificial intelligence and technology streamline behind-the-scenes operations, human connection will remain the heartbeat of the bank.

“The Berry family’s guiding principles—passed down from

grandfather—still echo today: be absolutely honest, live thriftily, and work like hell. These simple but enduring lessons have become the compass for decisionmaking, whether navigating growth or staying true to a promise of personal service.”

Looking forward, opportunities abound in Sapulpa and across Tulsa, where new housing and redevelopment are transforming perceptions of the community. But even as the landscape changes, the Berry family’s vision is clear: American Heritage will continue to be more than a bank. It will remain a partner, a neighbor, and a family legacy—one built on trust, resilience, and a promise to serve its communities.

FAITH, FAMILY, FOOTBALL

How Dillon Stoner’s Journey From Gridiron to Gratitude Reflects What Matters Most

Thanksgiving in Oklahoma has a rhythm of its own. The smell of turkey wafts from the kitchen. Family members pile into the living room. Football hums in the background. Here, faith, family, and football aren’t separate traditions; they’re woven together. Few understand this more than former NFL wide receiver and Tulsa native Dillon Stoner.

“My identity is not football—my identity is in Christ, and that grounds me.”

From the moment he strapped on pads in the third grade, football was Dillon’s world. At Jenks High School, he became a two-way standout before heading to Oklahoma State, where he grew into a reliable receiver. By the end of his career, he had caught 191 passes for 2,378 yards and 17 touchdowns, earning a reputation as a dependable playmaker. The NFL wasn’t just a dream—it was his destination.

In 2021, that dream came true when Dillon signed with the Las Vegas Raiders as an undrafted free agent. He found himself in an NFL jersey, lining up against the best in the world. But even as he achieved what so many only imagine, he battled immense anxiety.

After a strong preseason, Dillon earned a spot on the practice squad and went on to play six games that year. It was the affirmation he had long chased, but he wanted more. He entered the 2022 season on a high note, turning heads during offseason practice and putting himself in a strong position to make the 53-man roster. However, that momentum didn’t last long. On the first day of training camp, Dillon fractured the sesamoid bone in his big toe. The injury sidelined him and ultimately landed him on the practice squad. Still determined to prove he belonged on the active roster, he pushed forward. Just two weeks into the season though, a torn Achilles ended his dreams before they truly had a chance to take shape.

CONTINUED >

For most athletes, it’s the moment they fear most. For Dillon, it brought a complicated wave of emotions. In a strange way, he felt relief—not because he wanted to give up the game he loved, but because the pressure he carried suddenly eased. For the first time, he had space to breathe. Yet the injury forced him to face what he’d avoided: who he was without football, and where he would turn if his lifelong dream fell apart. In that struggle, faith became his anchor. “My identity is not football,” Dillon says. “My identity is in Christ. God is always good, even when the plan doesn’t make sense.”

After the 2022 season ended, he received crushing news—his time with the Raiders was over. Determined to return, Dillon fought through rehabilitation. Unwilling to give up, he pursued an opportunity in the CFL, only to suffer another injury. The setback was heartbreaking, yet he chose to lean even more on his faith. “God is always good,” Dillon states, “When one door closes another will open.” The test was not about understanding why, but about trusting God’s faithfulness in the unknown.

Today, Dillon is back in Tulsa, forging a new path in commercial real estate. Football remains part of his life, but now it shares the stage with new callings and a broader perspective. Gratitude has shifted from highlight reels to simple blessings: a roof overhead, the ability to walk, and time with loved ones.

This Thanksgiving, Dillon reflects on a journey that carried him from backyard games to the NFL. Faith still grounds him. Family still surrounds him. And football—though different—still has its place. For Dillon, that’s the rhythm of life.

H O P E

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

Tips on meal prepping for less stress

Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful.

Between grocery shopping, house cleaning, cooking and baking, it’s no wonder the day devoted to giving thanks can feel a tad daunting.

Here’s some very welcome good news: whether this is your first holiday hosting rodeo or you’ve stuffed many a turkey over the years, you can knock out most of the Thanksgiving meal prep work in advance – some of it two weeks before the big day.

To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

Create Your Thanksgiving Menu

• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will be much easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark or scrolling when your hands are covered with flour or onions.

• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.

• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand – even the ones you are pretty sure you have enough of, like salt and pepper (this tip comes from personal experience!).

• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.

• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.

4-5 DAYS BEFORE

Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh Groceries

• Clean your home completely, enlisting family members to help. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.

• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.

• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating. This will free up valuable real estate for your various dishes.

2-3 DAYS BEFORE

Prep Meals & Set the Table

• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.

• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go (and if they will all fit!) Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free until Thursday. You can also do this for a buffet.

• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.

• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.

1 DAY BEFORE

Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks

• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum and shine up the bathrooms.

• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and bake the pies.

• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.

• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!

• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.
