Dear Sonoran Foothills neighbors,
I’m beyond excited to bring this publication back to the Sonoran Foothills community. As an Arizona native who has called the Northwest Valley home for over 20 years, this place and its people mean so much to me. My vision for this magazine is both simple and heartfelt: to create meaningful, beautiful, and engaging content for you—our neighbors, families, and friends who make this community so extraordinary.

In this issue, you’ll meet Jay and Katia Coupland, the new owners of The Bearded Barber, a one-of-a-kind barbershop and speakeasy. You’ll also be introduced to Brianna Arnold, the creative force behind The Charcuterie Club, whose handcrafted grazing boards inspire connection, celebration, and unforgettable gatherings.
As you turn these pages, I hope you discover new favorites, connect with inspiring stories, and feel an even deeper appreciation for the people and businesses that make Sonoran Foothills such a vibrant and welcoming place to call home. Creating this issue has been such a joy, and I can’t wait to share more with you in the months ahead.
With gratitude,

Chris and I have been married 22 years and are proud parents of two amazing kids. Robin, 21, studies Museum Studies at Arizona State, while Brenden, 18, is training at Universal Technical Institute to become a performance car mechanic. Family is my foundation.

I’m an identical twin (hi, Caresa!), a shih tzu mom to Vinny and Bodhi, and a craft-beer enthusiast who loves exploring breweries when we travel. I’m also a former banker and once served as Treasurer for our kids’ elementary PTSA.

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

THE POWER COUPLE BRINGING FRESH ENERGY TO ANTHEM’S BEARDED BARBER
Katia Coupland makes an entrance. She arrives at our photoshoot in her signature bold red lip, and radiating confidence. Her husband, Jay, follows with a relaxed grin, his rings glinting as he adjusts his cuff. Known around town for two things— his perfectly mixed Old Fashioned’s and his effortless cool—Jay is the balance to Katia’s fire. Their chemistry is undeniable, and it shows in the way they run their business side by side.
ARTICLE BY ASHLEY HATHAWAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY HATHAWAY

As of July 1, Katia and Jay are officially the new owners of Bearded Barber, a one-of-a-kind barbershop-meets-speakeasy in Anthem. Married seven years and raising four children ages one through nine, the couple juggles car seats, soccer practice, and diaper duty while running a concept business that thrives on style and connection.
Their love story is just as colorful as their present. They first met working in hospitality when Jay was, as Katia teases, her “cabana boy” while visiting a local resort. “From the moment I saw her, I was
in awe,” Jay recalls. Katia admits she immediately texted her sister, who also worked with him: “Who is that Jay? He’s cute.” The rest is history.
A shared background in hospitality shapes how they run Bearded Barber today. “I don’t care how good your food— or haircut—is,” Katia says. “If I don’t feel welcome, I won’t come back.” Jay adds, “Treat your people right, treat your customers right. That’s what it’s all about.”
Stepping inside Bearded Barber is like stepping back in time—1920s vintage charm meets modern luxury. “This place
“When you work hard, good things come.”
Katia and Jay Coupland

has a certain magic,” Jay says. “We want to honor that timeless feel while adding our own family-run touch.”
Family is their core. When they’re not at the speakeasy, the Couplands are with their kids at local parks or trying new restaurants across the Valley—“no chains allowed,” Katia laughs. Supporting local is a value they live at home and in business, where they feature Arizona-made bourbons, local breweries, and community events.
Owning the business has come with plenty of learning moments. “I never thought I’d know the difference between a tapered cut and a hot shave,” Katia jokes. Still, she and Jay lean on adaptability—and
each other. “It’s like the restaurant industry,” Katia explains. “You’re not just giving a haircut. You’re creating an experience.”
One of Bearded Barber’s standout features is its membership program. Members enjoy a personalized wine locker, monthly bottles you won’t find at grocery stores, and exclusive events like mixology with Jay. “It’s not about exclusivity,” Katia says. “It’s about connection and value.”
Their road to ownership feels like fate. Jay first walked into Bearded Barber out of curiosity, only to end up working its grand opening—which happened to fall on his and Katia’s anniversary. When the team was short on bartenders, he called

her in. Katia jumped in without hesitation, handled the 250-guest crowd, and within a week was promoted to front of house manager—making her Jay’s boss. “I knew they’d promote her right away after seeing her in action,” Jay laughs.
That same work ethic drives how they lead today. “The most important thing is a happy staff,” Katia says. “We spend so much of our lives here, I want our team to feel like family.” It’s an approach that’s paid off—most of their crew has been there for years.
As first-time business owners, the Couplands are already thinking ahead. “Expansion is on the horizon,” Jay teases. Katia smiles: “When you work hard, good things come.”
A mix of hustle, humor, and heart. In their hands, Bearded Barber is more than a speakeasy -- it’s where sharp fades meet smooth sips and good times always flow.

Step aside, veggie trays and lackluster lunch spreads — The Charcuterie Club is elevating North Phoenix’s grazing game one chic, show-stopping board at a time. Leading this stylish, snackable movement is Brianna Albert, a former fashion buyer who swapped runway looks for curated edible masterpieces. Originally from Huntington Beach, California, Brianna brought her design-savvy eye and deep love of hospitality to the North Valley five years ago — and honestly, it has never looked or tasted better.
“I spent 10 years as a fashion buyer, jet-setting for big-name brands,” she says. “But I’ve always felt most alive when I’m hosting — filling my kitchen with laughter, conversation, and amazing food.” And when your kitchen roots are Italian and your love language is hospitality, launching a business built around good company and grazing boards is basically destiny.
Brianna’s journey from fashion to food wasn’t exactly a straight runway, but it was a natural transition. “In fashion, I was curating looks and collections — always thinking about color, texture, and flow. When I started creating charcuterie boards, it felt like the same creative process but with so much more freedom. There are no rules except to delight the senses and bring people together.”
Bringing people together is exactly what she does best. The Charcuterie Club isn’t just about assembling meats and cheeses; it’s
ARTICLE BY ASHLEY HATHAWAY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY HATHAWAY
about crafting experiences that linger. “Sometimes one ingredient or theme inspires the whole board. It’s like curating a fashion collection, but cheesier — in the best way,” Brianna explains. From fresh herbs and edible flowers to unexpected touches like snap peas and dried citrus, no detail is too small.
Every board reflects Brianna’s fashion-forward eye for color and texture, ensuring each spread is not only delicious but visually stunning — because people eat with their eyes first. Her vibrant, inviting boards turn every bite into a playful discovery, with thoughtfully paired flavors and textures that surprise and delight. The way she balances rustic charm with sophisticated style makes each board

feel like a work of art that’s meant to be savored.
But The Charcuterie Club is about more than aesthetics. It’s deeply rooted in community. Brianna loves partnering with local artisans and makers, weaving the spirit of the North Valley into each board. “Collaborating with other local creatives not only strengthens our community but enriches what we offer — everything feels personal and authentic.” From The Suites on 41st, where she connects with fellow business owners, to sourcing fresh, local ingredients whenever possible, Brianna’s business thrives on these meaningful connections.
Social media has been essential in sharing The Charcuterie Club’s story. “Instagram and TikTok have been like my virtual storefront,” she says.

“Through those platforms, I can invite people into the vibe of what we do — not just the finished boards, but the moments and moods that surround them.” It’s a modern form of storytelling that lets Brianna showcase the joy of gathering and the beauty of thoughtful design, drawing people in with each post and video.
The response has been incredible. One look at The Charcuterie Club’s Instagram and you’ll find yourself plotting your next Pinterest-worthy picnic. Honestly, who can resist? The photos invite you to slow down, savor life’s little pleasures, and create moments worth remembering. These aren’t just snack trays — they’re invitations to celebrate the everyday and elevate even the simplest occasions.
Of course, running a food business isn’t without its challenges. Arizona summers, with their relentless heat, have tested Brianna’s creativity and resilience. “I’ve had to adapt to the seasons, find new ways to keep the boards fresh and beautiful no matter the weather,” she says. But this flexibility only adds to the magic — every board feels thoughtfully tailored to the moment and setting, perfectly suited to whatever occasion calls for it, whether it’s an outdoor picnic or an intimate indoor gathering.

Brianna’s passion for hospitality shines through everything The Charcuterie Club does. “I want people to feel celebrated,” she says, “even if it’s just for a moment.” Whether it’s a casual catch-up with friends, a birthday party, or a quiet afternoon made special by a personal-sized box, her goal is to make every occasion a little brighter and more memorable.
Looking ahead, Brianna is excited to expand the Charcuterie Club experience. This fall, she’s debuting a custom charcuterie cart, hand-crafted by her husband, perfect for private events and pop-ups. Workshops and DIY kits are also on the horizon, offering fans a chance to learn the art of board styling firsthand. And the ultimate dream? A charming storefront where locals can gather, shop, and snack to their hearts’ content — a community hub that embodies the warmth and creativity of the brand.

When asked about her personal favorite pairing, Brianna doesn’t hesitate: “Dry aged salami with goat cheese and pepper jelly. It’s delicious, savory, and feels like a little celebration with every bite.” If that sounds like a perfect bite to you, well, you’re already halfway to being a charcuterie convert.
Ultimately, The Charcuterie Club is a love letter to the art of gathering, the joy of sharing, and the magic found in thoughtfully crafted moments. With Brianna’s keen eye, passion for hospitality, and deep community ties, she’s not just building boards — she’s building memories that linger long after the last bite.
So next time you find yourself staring down a sad snack tray or a boring lunch box, remember there’s a better way to graze. Whether you’re planning a picnic, hosting a party, or just want to turn an ordinary Tuesday into something special, The Charcuterie Club has you covered — with style, flavor, and a whole lot of heart.

As the vibrant colors of summer slowly yield to the warm and earthy hues of autumn, there’s a distinct charm in the air at the arrival of fall. It’s a season filled with the crisp rustling of leaves, cozy sweaters, and the promise of pumpkin-spiced everything. What better way to embrace the changing seasons than by indulging in a delightful treat that captures the essence of both summer’s sweetness and fall’s rich flavors?
My recipe for “Acorn Donut Holes” combines the light, airy sweetness of summer donuts with the warm, comforting tones of fall. Grab your ingredients and let’s get started!
Ingredients:
• Donut holes
• Melting chocolates
• Fall sprinkles
• Pretzels

Instructions:
1. Pour your fall sprinkles into a small bowl for dipping. Lay wax paper down.
2. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the melting chocolates in the microwave, about 15-20 seconds. Carefully watch to ensure they don’t burn.
3. Dip the top of each donut hole into the melted chocolate, covering about halfway down the donut.
4. After dipping, immediately dip the chocolate-covered portion of the donut hole into the bowl of sprinkles, coating it with the fall sprinkles.
5. Insert a pretzel into the top of the “acorn” to create the acorn stem.
6. Carefully place the decorated acorn donut holes on the wax paper to let them cool and allow the chocolate to set.
7. Once the chocolate has hardened, your acorn donut holes are ready to enjoy!
These delightful treats are perfect for fall and make for a fun and tasty dessert or snack. Enjoy!
