Blessings Abound

I have been trying for some time to decide which season here in the PNW is my favorite, but I don't think I can pick. Each one is filled with so much unique goodness. The hustle and bustle of long summer days morphs into a sudden crispness... you blink and realize a warm pumpkin spice latte has replaced your iced vanilla latte. It feels slow and sudden all at the same time.

Life does that to us. A constant push-pull. We want to "go," "do," "accomplish," but simultaneously  feel a tug towards the slowing of the season. That is why I love Thanksgiving - because in the midst of the holiday craziness, we are forced (even if only for a moment) to stop, savor, and reflect. To be reminded of our blessings and to give thanks for them. It is good, it is purposeful, and it is necessary.

That's why our November issue is dedicated to stories of intentionality - of gathering, giving back, and celebrating the people and organizations that make Snohomish such a special place. As we prepare to get together with loved ones, let us all take a moment to slow down and reflect on the joys of our lives. What is it you are thankful for this season?

I am thankful for many things, but mostly that there is a time and a season for everything. And in all of it, the blessings are abounding.

Wishing you and your family a season of gratitude,

November 2025

Gisela Howell, owner of Faithfully Maid

FAITHFULLY Maid

Wearing many hats is nothing new for Gisela Howell. Growing up, she enjoyed staying busy as she rode and broke horses, sang, and danced. With a Peruvian mother, Howell said she was always dancing to Latin music in the kitchen, convinced that one day she’d be a professional ballerina. “My coach said I didn’t have the knees for it,” she added laughingly.

That love of dancing led her to a love of fitness – and Howell transitioned from a corporate job into that of a personal trainer, coaching people out of her own garage so she could be home with her newborn son. But when her family moved to their farm in 2015, they realized there was no space to continue training. Needing income right away, Howell thought about what she could do.

“I did a move out clean for a friend, and it spread like wildfire,” Howell said. “I had people reaching out to me and knew this was going to be it.”

And just like that, Faithfully Maid was born. What started as a one-woman show has grown significantly – Howell now has 26 employees and serves more than 200 clients, averaging 17 cleaning projects a day.

Creating healthier, happier spaces with customized cleaning

Bruno, Howell's Heritage South Down Babydoll sheep

“I help my employees do their jobs and do them well,” Howell said, “but they’re my lifelines. They are so hardworking and trustworthy. I wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”

With many cleaning companies in the area, Howell said what sets them apart is their emphasis on safe, natural cleaning products, their attention to detail, and their personalized touch.

“Every home, family and business deserves customized care,” Howell said. “We really listen to our clients and what they want. With us, it’s not just about cleaning. It’s about creating healthier, happier spaces.”

Ten years into the business, Faithfully Maid’s services have extended far beyond homes, now offering services to real estate offices, vacation rental homes, small and large businesses, post-construction sites, and more. Howell said almost all of their clientele have come in through current clients or word of mouth.

“God is good,” Howell said. “I can’t take the credit –He provided and built this for me.”

These days, even though Howell isn’t doing much of the cleaning, her hands are plenty full. When she’s not communicating with her cleaners and clients, which is pretty non-stop, she’s tackling projects with her husband, taking her son to his baseball games or driver’s ed, and tending to the dozens of farm animals on her Arlington property – like four-month-old Heritage South Down baby doll sheep, named Bruno.

“It’s so hard, but it’s all so rewarding. I love that I can provide for my family from my own couch on movie night to the top of a mountain while hiking,” Howell said. “It is amazing to see where it is now…I can’t wait to keep going.”

ACTS OF HOSPITALITY

5 WAYS TO HOST WITH HEART THIS SEASON

For those who love to gather, it’s easy to forget that hosting and hospitality aren’t the same thing. Hosting is about gathering people, while hospitality is about caring for them. True hospitality means noticing needs, creating ease, and making everyone feel welcome—not setting the perfect table or curating flawless décor (but by all means, keep doing this if it brings you joy!)

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAWNING MEMORIES

Whether you’re opening your home this season or simply looking for ways to make those around you feel cared for, here are a few thoughtful gestures that go beyond the basics and help ensure there’s a little extra kindness and joy to go around.

1. Offer a festive, non-alcoholic option. With more guests choosing sober or “sober-ish” lifestyles, thoughtful beverage choices matter. A batch cocktail served with spirits on the side or zero-proof wines and beers ensures everyone has something celebratory to sip. So many great, inclusive options for your gathering!

2. Know the mobility and dietary needs of your guests. Allergies, mobility needs, or dietary preferences should shape both the menu and the flow of your space. A little foresight helps guests relax and feel included, eliminating the stress that can come with having specific needs or being in a new space.

3.  Set clear start and end times. Defining when the meal begins and the gathering winds down removes guesswork, helping guests enjoy the moment without missing key moments or overstaying.

4. Be specific when asking for help. If guests offer to bring something, it is helpful to provide a bit of direction to eliminate the guessing. Instead of “bring a side dish,” try, “could you bring a green salad you enjoy?” Clarity makes contributions feel intentional and appreciated.

5. Be present, not perfect. People appreciate an imperfect home. Skip the apologies for unfinished projects or dishes in the sink. Guests value connection over perfection, and

“Guests value connection over perfection, and authenticity makes your space feel even more welcoming.”

authenticity makes your space feel even more welcoming. Community is the purpose and people matter more than a polished, curated space. So, open your home this holiday season, you will not regret it.

Allegretto Vineyard Resort — your next fall road-trip destination

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY

CHAD JEFFRY

In the heart of Paso Robles sits Allegretto Vineyard Resort — a true wine oasis. Approaching the resort, you can feel the atmosphere begin to take over. Passing by other local wineries and pulling into the resort, you experience the blending of Italian heritage and worldclass wines. The common theme at the resort is the Cello; everything from the shape of the property (the north edge of the property curves much like the instrument) to the design of the courtyard, the names of the wines, and the name of their on-site restaurant.

Allegretto’s resort includes over seven acres, with one of its three local vineyards sitting directly on the property. We had a guide to lead us through our tasting, giving us the full experience - working with our palettes to get the perfect taste from each varietal.

The tasting list included a 2022 Cello Chardonnay, which is finished in stainless steel barrels, and was light, crisp, and citrusy. The 2019 Heart of the Vibe, a blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Tannat, had hints of lily and lavender and reminded me of my days in the Oregon wine country. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon from the Willow Creek Vineyard was a surprise because of how clean it finished. We ended with their 2018 Tannat from their Allegretto Vineyard on property.

As someone early on in their wine journey, each tasting was truly unique and tasteful. The progression from Chardonnay to Tannat helped the palette develop and enjoy the flavors and notes of each unique bottle. The robust Tannat was easily the favorite. The grapes originated from southern France through Uruguay and are now grown across the globe. With notes of butterscotch, cherry, and tobacco, it was rich and smooth. Tannat is also touted as one of the “healthiest” wines due to its high level of antioxidants.

Shortly after the tasting, there was a little time to explore the resort itself, from the breathtaking art pieces to the peaceful courtyard, bocce ball court, and the chapel. The most impressive piece may have been a cross-section of a sequoia tree that was felled in 1952, dating back to before 214 BC (before the Great Wall of China was built).

Moving on to dinner, we sat down at Cello Ristorante, the on-site restaurant and bar. Our server picked out their top dishes and drinks that were currently on the menu. She also informed us about the fact that they have not only resort guests who eat here but also regular locals.

I started off with one of Cello’s signature cocktails, the New Fashion — an amazing twist on the regular Old Fashioned that includes Basil Hayden Bourbon, Nitro-Infused Vanilla Espresso Turbo (made in-house and infused with a cinnamon smoke directly from a fresh cinnamon stick, an orange, and Angostura bitters.

We started our meal with the Shrimp & Risotto dish, made with garlic roasted shrimp, spring peas, mascarpone, baby arugula, pecorino romano, truffle, tomato confit, and Calabrian romesco. Shortly after, the 16-ounce Lamb Rack and a glass of the 2017 Tannat arrived. Paired with fresh grilled vegetables, a buttermilk and confit garlic mash, and drizzled with a Tannat demi-glace, this dish was more impressive than the first dish.  To finish the meal we had the Triple Chocolate Bomb. The softness of the cake and mouse, with the crunch of the almonds, made this subtle, sweet, and too good to pass up and completely devour.

Next time you’re looking for an extended weekend trip, look no further than Paso Robles and Allegretto Vineyard Resort. They book fast for the weekends as they are always hosting music, art, yoga, and other events, so be sure to plan this one out soon.

ROASTED SWEET POTATOES

Gathering around the holiday table this year, you’ll likely find a mound of buttery mashed potatoes and maybe even a dish of candied yams. But unlike the traditional sides we expect at Thanksgiving, these Roasted Sweet Potatoes bring something both familiar and refreshingly new.

Tender wedges are roasted until golden on the edges, then finished with Parmesan and fresh herbs. The result? A sweet-and-savory side dish that just might become the one your guests request year after year. Let’s make them!

A WELCOMED ADDITION TO THE THANKSGIVING TABLE

SERVES: 8–10

ingredients:

• 3 pounds white sweet potatoes

• 2 tablespoons high-quality extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for pan prep

• 2 tablespoons butter, melted

• ¼ cup vegetable or chicken stock

• 2 cloves garlic (or 2 teaspoons), finely grated or chopped

• 1 teaspoon dried oregano

• 2 tablespoons lemon juice, plus more for garnish

• ½ teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste

• ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste

• ¼ cup fresh herbs, such as Italian parsley, for garnish

• Finely grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with olive oil and set aside.

2. Rinse the sweet potatoes and peel away any blemishes. Leave the skins on for a rustic finish, or peel them if you prefer. Cut into wedges or cubes about ¾ inch thick.

3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the olive oil, melted butter, stock, garlic, lemon juice, oregano, salt, and pepper.

4. Add the potatoes to the bowl and toss with tongs (or clean hands) until evenly coated.

5. Transfer the potatoes to the prepared baking dish. Cover with foil and bake on the upper oven rack for 30 minutes.

6. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, until the potatoes are fork-tender and browned on the edges. For extra color, broil for 2–3 minutes at the end.

If you love this recipe, find more seasonal and hospitality-focused recipes at thehostnotes.com and follow along @thehostnotes on social channels.

7. Finish with a squeeze of lemon, fresh parsley, and a generous sprinkle of Parmigiano Reggiano. Spoon some of the seasoned cooking liquid from the pan over the top before serving. Enjoy!

H O P E

with YOU

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

Home Loans

Understanding the nuances of the loan process with Brandy Hekker

Buying a home can be one of the most exciting times in your life - but it can also be one of the most stressful. For Brandy Hekker, loan officer at CMG Homes Loans, home ownership means creating community and stability for families. Every day, she works diligently to minimize tensions during the home loan process through open communication, careful attention to detail, and proactive problem-solving. Drawing on more than 25 years of experience, Brandy provides insight and clear answers to the following frequently asked questions.

WHEN SHOULD WE APPLY FOR OUR LOAN?

Starting your pre-approval early is key.  Most lenders will start with a “soft” credit pull.  This doesn’t hit your credit score with a hard inquiry, but gives us a pictures of your credit so that we can run scenarios specific for you and look for areas that could be improved.  Applying early gives time to work through any issues that might need attention before you’re ready to make an offer and lock in your rate.

HOW MUCH DO I NEED FOR A DOWN PAYMENT?

There are a wide range of loan programs to meet different needs, and it is important to find the option that best applies to you. This

is another reason to start the application process early. It gives time to explore the best use of your funds as you move toward purchasing. There are programs available to help with down payment if you qualify, and some clients get into homes with very little cash out of pocket.

WHAT IS A BUYDOWN?

The most common is a permanent buydown, where you pay a percentage of the loan amount in points to lower your interest rate for the life of the loan. Another option is a temporary buydown, like a 1/1, 2/1, or 3/2/1. In this case, the seller prepays interest to lower your rate for the first few years, giving you a lower payment starting out that gradually increases. If you refinance during that time, any unused interest is credited back to you. This type of buydown would need to be negotiated in your purchase contract since it requires seller contribution.

WHEN IS IT A GOOD TIME TO REFINANCE?

Everyone’s situation is a little different. Your current loan type, balance, term, and how long you plan to stay in the home all play a role. It is preferable to make sure the cost of refinancing is recouped through monthly savings within a reasonable amount of time or your overall loan term is shortened.  Moving to a shorter term 15- or 20-year term can result in significant interest savings.

HOW DO I CHOOSE A LENDER?

Everyone is unique, but in any financial decision, having a trusting relationship with the person you’re working with is so important. Buying a home is one of the biggest transactions you’ll go through, and it can be stressful. Clear communication and setting expectations help everyone feel confident and at ease.

Empowering Women at Home and Across the Globe

How Lifetime Heating & Cooling is changing lives

ARTICLE BY COURTNEY EVANS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIFETIME HEATING & COOLING

At first glance, Lifetime Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric may seem like any other home service company—fixing furnaces, installing air conditioners, and ensuring homes stay comfortable. But behind the scenes, this Snohomish-based business is doing something much bigger: empowering women, supporting families, and creating lasting change—both locally and globally.

Whether it’s installing a new heating and cooling system for a local veteran, to helping a single mother keep her family warm, this company is dedicated to helping people thrive. “We believe in doing the right thing because it’s the right thing to do,” says Darrick Philip, General Manager of Lifetime Heating & Cooling. “If we don’t take care of our community, then what are we really doing?”

For many women, home isn’t just a place to live— it’s the heart of their family’s safety and security. Lifetime Heating & Cooling understands this and is committed to ensuring that no woman has to worry about keeping their home safe and comfortable.

CONTINUED >

Through their Lifetime Cares Initiative, the company provides heating and cooling systems at no cost to women and families facing hardship, including single mothers, widows, and families in need. Their technicians approach each home with compassion and integrity, treating every customer like family.

“We believe in taking care of our community, and that means looking out for those who need extra support,” says Philip. “Our goal is to help women and families stay safe and comfortable in their homes, because no one should have to choose between paying bills and keeping their home warm in the winter.”

While Lifetime Heating & Cooling is dedicated to supporting local women and families, their impact reaches far beyond Washington. Inspired by a personal connection and shared vision, they partnered with Hagari Rwanda to help women gain stability, resources, and opportunities for a better future.

Hagari Rwanda is a nonprofit that works with women who have been trapped in poverty and prostitution, giving them the resources they need to build a new future. Many of these women are mothers, desperate to provide for their children but unable to escape the cycle of hardship.

Hagari Rwanda empowers women through job training, education, and financial support, helping them build self-sufficient futures. One of their most impactful programs teaches women to weave intricate baskets from straw and sisal grass—a skill that not only honors Rwandan tradition but also provides a reliable source of income. These handcrafted baskets are sold locally and internationally, allowing women to support their families and gain financial independence.

To help support this mission, every customer who purchases a new heating or cooling system from Lifetime Heating & Cooling receives one of these handwoven baskets—a symbol of resilience, strength, and hope.

“These baskets are a small token of appreciation, but they represent so much more,” says Philip. “By purchasing a system, our customers are helping provide sustainable

income to a mother in Rwanda, allowing her to support her children, afford healthcare, and build a future with dignity.”

Hagari Rwanda’s work extends beyond job training. They also provide health insurance, education sponsorships, meals, and financial support, ensuring women and their children have the resources to create a brighter, more stable future. And with every basket placed in a new home, it serves as a reminder that small acts of generosity can create lasting change—connecting women across continents through hope, opportunity, and shared strength.

At its core, Lifetime Heating & Cooling is about more than home comfort—it’s about making a difference through compassion and opportunity. Whether it’s keeping a local family warm, helping women rebuild their lives, or supporting mothers in Rwanda with sustainable income, their mission is rooted in generosity and community. “When we invest in people—whether they’re our neighbors or across the world—we create ripples of change that go far beyond what we can see,” says Philip.

FAMILY TIME is the Best Investment

These simple, yet intentional ideas can make the best memories.

EAT DINNER TOGETHER AS A FAMILY.

This meaningful time around the table is where connections happen. Let everyone share good moments from the day or something they struggled with. Create a jar of conversation starters, exchange giggles and cook up something delicious.

CREATE SURPRISES

Everyone likes to feel special – and surprised. The littlest things make the biggest impact: A backyard picnic; a sleepover in an indoor fort; an after-school ice cream treat; a bathroom spa day.

CREATE FAMILY TRADITIONS

Build weekly or monthly traditions –movie nights with popcorn, board game marathons, a gratitude jar, evening bike rides, living room dance parties, even a family book club to discover old favorites and new reads.

EXPRESS LOVE AND GRATITUDE

In busy seasons, it’s easy to forget to let a loved one feel appreciated and thought of. Tuck a hand-written note in a lunch box or give an unexpected hug; spend time sharing what you’re thankful for about them.

KEEP GENERATIONS LINKED

Consider Sunday meals with grandparents or weekly phone calls if distance separates. Invite them to share their childhood stories and treasured memories. Start a yearly family scrapbook filled with favorite photographs and vacation souvenirs.
