Cheers! From the Editor

Dear Readers,

Fall is finally here—and with it, the perfect excuse to gather around the table, indulge in comfort foods, and toast to the flavors that make life (and Smyrna and Vinings) so good. October just feels like the right month to lean into all things delicious, doesn’t it?

This Food & Beverage issue is packed with local flavor, and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you. We’re serving up stories from some of Smyrna’s best-loved spots, like the Zucca Group—home to Zucca Pizzeria & Bar, Vintage Tavern, and The Corner Taqueria—where family-friendly vibes meet meals worth savoring. We also shine a spotlight on GOOD Kitchen, a place where food and healing go hand-in-hand, and REV Coffee, our city’s “living room,” where great conversations and great coffee brew daily.

For those who like their meals with a little spice and a side of hops, don’t miss our feature on Dhaba BBQ’s flavorful pop-ups and brewery collaborations. And if your taste runs to elegance, we’ll take you along for a resplendent afternoon tea experience that’s as beautiful as it is delicious.

You’ll also meet personal chef Sue Snape of Leaf & Loaf, whose food philosophy proves that cooking can nourish both body and soul. And, because October is never complete without a bit of seasonal fun, we’ve included a peek inside Smyrna’s very own corn maze and pumpkin patch—perfect for families, date nights, or anyone who just loves fall. Add in the island flavors of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue and the quiet beauty of Trolley Line Park captured by our photographer, Ashley Putnam, and you’ve got a full menu of community, creativity, and connection.

To me, that’s the magic of this season—and of food itself. It’s never just about the plate in front of us. It’s about gathering, savoring, remembering, and creating new memories to hold onto long after the last bite.

So, pour yourself something warm, pull up a chair, and enjoy this month’s issue. Here’s to a flavorful fall, Smyrna—may it be filled with good food, good friends, and plenty of reasons to raise a glass.

With gratitude,

October 2025

SMYRNA’S BELOVED TRIO

Twenty-three years ago, two high school buddies from Staten Island, New York, Tim Langell and Joey Romano, looked at a construction site in the middle of a sleepy Georgia suburb and saw possibility. Smyrna Market Village wasn’t much at the time—just the bones of what would become the heart of downtown—but for Tim and Joey, it was the perfect spot to bring their family recipes and vision to life.

Zucca Group’s story is one of great food, loyal staff, and a community that feels like family.
“Our staff is family, and they’re a huge part of why our restaurants feel the way they do.”

That vision became  Zucca Bar & Pizzeria, where Smyrna locals could finally get a true New York–style menu, handmade with the same care Tim grew up with back home. “We wanted a place where people felt comfortable, where the food was both familiar and authentic,” Tim recalls. The response was immediate. Neighbors flocked to the Market Village, and before long Zucca wasn’t just a pizza joint—it was the heartbeat of a new community.

Right next door, Vintage Tavern opened, a dimly lit spot true to its name. The tavern’s hardwood floors were reclaimed from a Smyrna home built in the 1800s, crafted from now-rare Heart Pine wood that adds warmth and history underfoot. At the center of it all stands the breathtaking wooden bar—built in Chicago in 1904, used in Atlanta for decades, and lovingly restored to its original luster for a new life in Smyrna. With its rich character and charm, Vintage Tavern quickly became the kind of place where

neighbors gather for wings, burgers, craft beers, and cocktails, served with the familiarity of an old friend.

In 2012, the team added  The Corner Taqueria, a bright and energetic space where Mexican flavors come with a playful twist. Think buffalo chicken tacos with ranch and pickles sharing the menu with classic elote corn on the cob, all paired with frosty fruit margaritas and fresh salsas made daily.

WHY THESE RESTAURANTS FEEL LIKE HOME

Ask a Smyrna local what makes the Zucca Group special, and you’ll hear the same thing: these restaurants don’t just serve food—they create experiences.

At Zucca, the award-winning Victory Pizza is a fan favorite. But Tim’s personal go-to is the Gman Sandwich—a hearty chicken cutlet hoagie stacked with salami, roasted red peppers, mozzarella, and balsamic. “It’s a Zucca classic,” he says, adding that it’s only available at lunch, which makes it even more

of a local insider’s treasure. In 2024, Zucca unveiled a beautifully renovated patio with a mural by a local artist and large booths perfect for family gatherings—a fresh chapter for a longtime favorite. Inside, the menu keeps people coming back with hearty entrées like Chicken Parmesan, classic pastas, and pizzas that balance tradition with creative touches.

At Vintage Tavern, the menu is all about crave-worthy comfort—crispy wings, stacked sandwiches, and hearty burgers with balsamic-glazed brussels sprouts. But the real draw is the atmosphere. The tavern has become a true neighborhood gathering place, where the staff know your name, your drink, and even your dog’s name.

And at The Corner Taqueria, regulars can’t get enough of the playful taco menu—blending Mexican tradition with American twists—all best enjoyed with a frosty margarita.

A COMMUNITY BUILT ONE PLATE AT A TIME

For Tim and Joey, success has never been measured just in dollars or dishes served. “Community means the most to us,” Tim says. “We love creating a space where locals see familiar faces.”

That sense of community stretches far beyond the restaurants’ walls. The Zucca Group sponsors local school programs, serves meals to Smyrna’s firefighters and police officers, and is a fixture at city events like Jonquil Fest and the St. Patrick’s Festival. Every December, the Zucca team is front and center at the lighting of the Market Village tree, surrounded by neighbors who have become like family.

“We’ve thrown wedding receptions and baby showers for our regulars,” Tim says. “We’ve seen them grow up, get married, start families, even walk through loss. To share all of life’s moments with people—it’s something we’ll always be thankful for.”

JB, Kristina & Tim
“We’ve seen our regulars grow up, get married, start families—even walk through loss. Sharing all of life’s moments with this community is something we’ll always be thankful for.”

GROWING TOGETHER

The Zucca Group family isn’t just made up of customers—it’s built on a core team that has been there since the very beginning. Chef JB Moran now oversees all three restaurants with a crew that’s grown alongside him for more than two decades. At the bar, familiar faces like Kristina—who began as a bartender and is now assistant manager—along with Jody, Heather, and Joe G., have been serving Smyrna regulars for 10 years or more. Behind the scenes, Krista started out waiting tables and today helps shape the company’s voice as marketing manager. And at The Corner Taqueria, Tim’s daughter Alex, who grew up in the restaurants, now manages and serves with fresh new ideas of her own.

“We grow from within,” Tim says proudly. “Our staff is family, and they’re a huge part of why our restaurants feel the way they do.”

WHAT’S NEXT

After 23 years, Tim is proud of the trio’s staying power in a fast-changing city. “We’ve been lucky to be part of Smyrna from the very beginning,” he reflects. “Our next step is to keep Zucca, Vintage, and The Corner Taqueria fun and exciting for generations to come.” Quality. Community. Legacy. These three words define the Zucca Group—and after 23 years, Smyrna can’t imagine Market Village without them.

A-MAZE-ING ADVENTURE

Smyrna celebrates fall with pumpkins, play, and plenty of joy.

ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY PUTNAM

If you’ve ever driven past Spring Emissions on Spring Rd. and wondered what’s going on behind it, you’ve probably stumbled upon one of Smyrna’s favorite fall traditions: the Smyrna Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch.

What began as Jeff Carter’s clever way of avoiding mowing grass on an empty lot has grown into Metro Atlanta’s largest corn maze—planted and built right here in Smyrna.

“When my wife thought I was crazy, I knew it was a great idea,” Jeff says with a grin. That’s Jeff in a nutshell—fun, energetic, and just the kind of person who can turn a wild idea into something unforgettable for the community.

A HOMEGROWN TRADITION

Unlike most corn mazes that require a long drive to the countryside, this one is just minutes from home. Families can stop by after school, make it a Saturday outing, or turn it into a weekly fall tradition.

Along with the winding maze and pumpkin patch, visitors can dig into a giant corn pit, race rubber duckies, hop on a “Hey” ride, and even catch the big game on TV while the kids play for hours.

The Carter Family

Jeff lights up when he talks about his favorite part—watching kids disappear into the maze or corn pit while parents relax and reconnect. “Several families came every weekend last year. It became their ‘thing,’” he recalls. That’s the heart of it: fall fun bringing people together.

BEHIND THE STALKS

Don’t be fooled by Jeff’s laid-back personality—there’s plenty of hard work that goes into creating the maze. In year one, he handtossed 30,000 seeds (yes, by hand). “I was stunned how that tiny seed grows into a sixfoot plant—I messed up,” he laughs.

This season, he went back to basics with carefully spaced seeds, and the results speak for themselves. “MAN, the corn is looking great!” Jeff says proudly. The result is a sprawling, picture-perfect maze made for laughter, selfies, and maybe even a few wrong turns along the way.

PUMPKINS, PARTIES & POSSIBILITIES

Every pumpkin purchase includes free access to all the activities, making it an easy and affordable outing for families. And Jeff’s imagination doesn’t stop at pumpkins—this year he’s added something “super cool that you don’t want to miss.” His dream? “To have a wedding in the stalks,” he says with a grin.

But at the heart of it all, his goal remains simple: “I just want people to have some good ole Fall Fun.”

So, grab your flannel, rally the family, and head over to Smyrna’s own backyard for a fall adventure you won’t forget.

October brings the pressure of early application deadlines, and if your student hasn’t started their essay, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news? The essay is the one element completely under their control at the time of application. Grades and test scores are set. Rec letters are out of their hands. But the essay is theirs to craft - and it’s the #1 place colleges seek positive character attributes important in admissions decisions. That’s why after grades and rigor, the essay is the most important factor in admissions decisions.

CLEAN FOOD, BIG HEARTS,

GOOD KITCHEN BLENDS HEALTH, HEART, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE INTO EVERY MEAL THEY THOUGHTFULLY PREPARE AND SHARE.

At first glance, GOOD Kitchen looks like a cozy neighborhood spot where you might grab a nutritious lunch or order catering for a work event. But step inside, and it quickly becomes clear: this is not just a restaurant. It’s a mission in motion, led by Veronica and Peter Tompkins—two people who have turned their personal journey into a gift for the community.

ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY PUTNAM

A MISSION BORN OF SURVIVAL

Veronica and Peter are both cancer thrivers, and their recovery sparked a passion for helping others heal. What began as a personal pursuit of healthy living has blossomed into a thriving “passion project” that now touches lives across Smyrna and Metro Atlanta.

“GOOD Kitchen has become a safe place for cancer patients and their families,” Veronica shares. “We want people to know they can eat here without worry, strengthening their immune systems during and after treatment.”

CLEAN, NUTRIENT-DENSE EATING

GOOD Kitchen’s philosophy is clear: every bite should be as nourishing as it is delicious. Their dishes are crafted to be both nutrient-dense and anti-inflammatory. They follow the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen guidelines for produce, ensuring the cleanest options make it onto the menu. Only clean protein sources are used, and they’ve earned certification as seed-oil free by Seed Oil Scout.

Instead of relying on refined sugar, they sweeten naturally with maple syrup,

“OUR FOOD DOESN’T JUST TASTE GOOD—IT’S TRULY GOOD FOR YOU.”

honey, or monk fruit. In the kitchen, ghee and olive oil replace processed oils, bringing both flavor and function to every recipe. “Our food doesn’t just taste good—it’s good for you,” Veronica says. That commitment extends well beyond the restaurant’s daily service. GOOD Kitchen caters for schools, boards, companies, and events throughout Metro Atlanta, and even fuels professional athletes with the same intentional approach to ingredients. Braves players started frequenting GOOD Kitchen when it first opened, then second baseman Ozzie Albies requested to be interviewed onsite at GOOD Kitchen for a TBS story about his diet for performance

and injury recovery. Soon after, NBA teams began requesting locker room meals. “Athletes and trainers have realized that clean, anti-inflammatory food improves performance, recovery—and even helps extend careers,” Peter explains.

INVESTING IN SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY

As parents and grandparents, Veronica and Peter have a soft spot for young people. Their impact can be seen across Smyrna’s schools and youth programs: catering galas for Smyrna Elementary and Campbell Middle, feeding Teasley Elementary’s teachers a back-to-school brunch, and even

hosting a taco bar fundraiser for the First United Methodist Youth Group.

They’ve also joined forces with other area restaurants to feed the Campbell High School football team before games, showing once again that GOOD Kitchen is all about fueling not just bodies, but spirits.

In addition, the Tompkins partner with organizations like Support Smyrna, the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation, and the Cobb County Legal Aid Society to support fundraising galas that strengthen the local safety net.

COURAGE AND COMPASSION

Some of their most meaningful work is rooted in personal loss. More than 20 years ago, Veronica and Peter lost their nephew, Ryan, to cancer. Out of that heartbreak came the Courageous Kids Program, designed to support families facing pediatric cancer. That program led them to the Mracek family, who had recently lost their threeyear-old daughter, Millie. Today, GOOD Kitchen honors her memory through ongoing partnerships with Mighty Millie’s Foundation. From popsicle sales and kid-friendly “Mighty Millie Corners” in their restaurants to the annual Mighty Millie Kids Concert—now in its fifth year—their efforts shine a light on childhood cancer and bring comfort to families navigating the unimaginable.

A WELLNESS CLUBHOUSE

But GOOD Kitchen isn’t only about the food on the plate. Veronica and Peter envision it as a gathering space—a “Wellness Clubhouse” for those pursuing healthier lives. Their WOW (Women

Owning Wellness) group meets nearly year-round, offering education, encouragement, and connection. After its success, they are launching the Longevity League, focused on aging gracefully through functional food, strength training, and brain health. They also bring wellness education into schools, helping young people build healthy habits from the start.

GOODNESS THAT LASTS

In every way, GOOD Kitchen reflects the character of its owners: resilient, generous, and deeply compassionate. Veronica and Peter Tompkins have created something far greater than a restaurant.

They’ve created a hub of nourishment, hope, and community—a place where food heals, causes are championed, and people are reminded of what it means to take care of one another.

GOOD Kitchen really is good for Smyrna.

SPARKLE, SIP, AND SAVOR: A Resplendent Tea Experience

WHIMSICAL TEAS BRING VINTAGE CHARM, LAUGHTER, AND HEARTFELT CONNECTION.

ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY PUTNAM

Step into a room where the table shimmers with vintage china, lace linens, and tiny glittered sugar flowers. A teapot steams nearby, delicate pastries tempt from tiered trays, and soft laughter drifts through the air. This is A Resplendent Tea Experience—a world Terri Hitzig created not only for her guests, but for herself. It feels a little like stepping back in time, with a touch of sparkle and plenty of heart.

Terri’s journey to tea was born out of loss. When her marriage and construction business ended, she found herself stripped of nearly everything. “I promised myself that next time, I’d build something that no one could take from me,” she recalls. She leaned on her background as a pastry chef in Chattanooga, her love of baking, and her ever-growing collection of vintage dishes and linens. With guidance from a mentor and a course on the art of tea, Terri transformed resilience into a business that sparkles with creativity and joy.

While the concept of afternoon tea traces its roots to British tradition—polished etiquette, formal menus, and mid-afternoon rituals—Terri’s take is something entirely her own. “My teas are warm, whimsical, and never stiff,” she says. She delights in curating both the menu and the setting: savory bites with a playful twist, sweets that surprise, and glitter-dusted touches that catch the light. Guests might find finger sandwiches with unexpected flavors, delicate pastries that look like works of art, and of course, perfectly steeped tea poured into heirloom cups.

Her tables are personal works of art, layered with antique teapots, embroidered napkins, and treasures she’s collected for years. “It feels like I was collecting for this moment all along,” she says. The result is a feminine, inviting setting where every detail matters, from the vintage spoons to the sparkle at the bottom of each teacup.

CONTINUED >

Events range from birthdays and book clubs to networking gatherings, showers, or simply friends carving out time together. In every setting, Terri sees the same thing happen: people slow down. “We live on our devices,” she explains. “Afternoon tea invites us to look up, talk, laugh, and connect. That’s what people are craving.”

For Terri, the reward comes at the table’s end. “When I see guests savoring the flavors, or notice the glitter in a teacup, I know I’ve done something right.” More than a beautiful meal, she hopes each guest leaves with genuine connection, a moment to breathe, and memories to share.

In a fast-paced world, A Resplendent Tea Experience offers an enchanting reminder: sometimes the most extraordinary things happen over a simple cup of tea.

COOKING WITH PURPOSE

LEAF & LOAF TURNS EVERYDAY DINING INTO HEALING, NOURISHING EXPERIENCES.

For Sue Snape, food has never been just about feeding people—it’s about healing them. After 16 years in medical illustration and animation, Sue felt the pull of the kitchen. At 40, with two young kids at home, she enrolled in culinary school. It was a bold shift that changed everything. “It’s never too late to start something new,” she says.

Sue spent five years as a restaurant chef in Buckhead before striking out on her own to create Leaf & Loaf, llc. From the start, she built her business around the belief that Food is Medicine. “Food can hurt us, but more importantly, it can help us,” she explains. Her approach is grounded in fresh, colorful, nutrient-rich ingredients that are as beautiful on the plate as they are nourishing to the body.

Through Leaf & Loaf, Sue offers custom weekly meal prep services and catering services. Each menu is created uniquely for her clients—whether it’s a busy family needing healthy dinners, or someone newly navigating allergies and intolerances. She takes the stress out of eating well, making every meal something to anticipate with joy. One of her favorite client notes came from a retired couple: “We couldn’t wait for your car to pull out of the driveway. We ran to the refrigerator and had a giant taste-testing!” Sue laughs, “I’ve been cooking for them ever since.”

Her cooking style is unfussy yet vibrant: grilled vegetables, fish, and meats become the building blocks of colorful, nutrient-dense and satisfying dishes. When Sue is not preparing amazing food in her clients’ kitchens, she’s often at local markets, carefully choosing the freshest produce and cleanest ingredients.

Sue insists she hasn’t “worked a day” since culinary school. Through Leaf & Loaf, she shares her passion for good food and good health, inviting her clients to slow down, savor, and feel nourished in every sense of the word.

“Cooking isn’t work for me—it’s joy, connection, and nourishment all stirred together.”

East Meets South at Dhaba BBQ

SMOKY MEATS, SPICY SAUCES, AND HOPPY BREWS—JAY PATEL’S DHABA BBQ IS SERVING UP MORE THAN FOOD; IT’S CREATING FLAVORFUL CONNECTIONS ONE BREWERY POP-UP AT A TIME.

Picture this: the bold, smoky aroma of sizzling barbecue wafting through the air, mingling with the crisp, hoppy scent of a freshly poured local brew. That’s not a daydream—it’s exactly the kind of magic happening at Dhaba BBQ, where Jay Patel is serving up an experience that’s as much about community as it is about food.

“Barbecue has this communal spirit. And breweries have that same vibe— people hanging out, enjoying themselves, tasting something unique. It just made sense.”

For Jay, the story of Dhaba BBQ begins with a love for bold flavor and cultural fusion. The word dhaba comes from roadside eateries in India—unpretentious, welcoming spots where friends gather, food is plentiful, and the flavors pack a punch. When Jay brought that tradition here, he added an all-American twist: barbecue that speaks the universal language of fire and smoke.

But Jay wasn’t content with simply setting up shop and serving plates. He wanted Dhaba BBQ to be part of something bigger—a flavorful collaboration that could only happen when cultures, cuisines, and local businesses came together. That’s when the idea of partnering with breweries took root.

“Barbecue has this communal spirit,” Jay explains. “And breweries have that same vibe—people hanging out, enjoying themselves, tasting something unique. It just made sense to bring the two together.”

And bring them together he did. From limited-edition BBQ pop-ups at neighborhood breweries to custom menu pairings that highlight both the food and the beer, Dhaba BBQ has found the sweet spot where spicy rubs, tangy chutneys, and slow-smoked meats meet hoppy IPAs, smooth lagers, and rich stouts. It’s a match made in culinary heaven.

“The tikka pulled pork sandwich alone proves that the best flavors are born when cultures, cuisines, and creativity come together.”

One crowd favorite is Jay’s take on smoked Lemon Pepper Masala Wings, marinated in Indian spices and finished over the pit until they are fall-off-thebone tender. Pair them with a crisp pale ale, and the flavors practically dance. Then there are the burnt ends, lacquered with a sticky, spiced glaze that plays perfectly against the deep notes of a robust porter. And don’t get us started on the tikka pulled pork sandwich—yes, pulled pork sandwich—stuffed with masala pulled pork, piled high with a cilantro lime slaw, and slathered in chutney barbecue sauce. It’s the kind of bite that makes you stop mid-sentence and nod in pure appreciation.

Beyond the food and drink, though, there’s something else brewing (pun fully intended). Jay sees Dhaba BBQ’s collaborations as a way to build bridges—between cultures, between local businesses, and between people who might not have met otherwise. “Food has this way of bringing everyone to the table,” he says. “And when you add in a good local beer, you’ve got the start of a great conversation.”

The result? Brewery nights where strangers turn into friends, plates are shared, and the line between Southern comfort and Indian spice blurs deliciously. It’s a vibe, a movement, and a reason to mark your calendar the next time you hear Dhaba BBQ is popping up at a brewery near you.

So, whether you’re a barbecue purist, a craft beer aficionado, or just someone who loves a good time with great food, Dhaba BBQ is your ticket to flavor-packed fun. Come hungry, bring a friend, and raise a glass—the fusion is waiting.

MORE THAN A CAFÉ—REV COFFEE HAS BECOME SMYRNA’S LIVING ROOM FOR NEARLY TWO DECADES.

Where Meet and Coffee

This year marks a double milestone for Rev Coffee Roasters: 15 years of roasting beans and 18 years of creating connection in the heart of Smyrna. What began as a hidden gem in 2007 has grown into a beloved gathering place that locals proudly call their own.

For owners Nick Bimmerle and Jenn Holt Bimmerle, the journey has been both humbling and rewarding. “We poured everything we had into this place, and the community poured right back into us,” Nick reflects. Originally from Texas, he moved to Smyrna as a child and sees Rev as an extension of his roots. “This city has shaped me, and Rev is a part of that.”

From the beginning, Rev set out to be more than a café. Over the years, it has hosted Rev Fest, block parties, and open mic nights, while also showcasing local artists on the café’s walls. During the pandemic, when doors were closed, patrons pulled out folding chairs in the parking lot just to see one another—a powerful reminder that Rev is, at its core, a community hub.

The coffee, of course, is worth celebrating too. Rev’s Marietta roastery has expanded the brand’s reach nationwide, with beans now shipping across the country and even featured in the Centurion Lounge at the Atlanta airport. Still, many locals come for the small things: a bacon cheddar muffin, a seasonal latte, or the secret back patio that feels like a hidden escape.

Looking ahead, Rev is excited to continue growing wholesale and online sales while keeping Smyrna at the center of its story. “At the end of the day, it always comes back to Smyrna,” Nick says. “This is home.”

ALOHA IN SMYRNA

L&L brings authentic Hawaiian flavors, traditions, and ohana spirit to Smyrna.

On August 8th, owner Michael Kervin invited the people of Smyrna to join in on a Hawaiian tradition in celebrating the 5th annual National Spam Musubi Day hosted by L&L Hawaiian BBQ.

Spam musubi, a beloved Hawaiian snack, consists of a bed of rice stacked with a slice of fried spam and barbecue sauce wrapped in a piece of nori.

Spam musubi (pronounced “moo-soo-bee”) is one of their best sellers, but Mike admits that most people

pronounce it wrong. “That’s always a good talking point,” says Mike, “Learning is part of the deal.”

While Mike loves to teach about the culture, it wasn’t always second nature. He had his first traditional Hawaiian dish, L&L’s Loco Moco, on his honeymoon in Hawaii with his wife Ruth, a native of Oahu.

“L&L Hawaiian BBQ has always just been a part of our childhood,” says Ruth. “I remember having lunch on a field trip with a spam musubi and a Hawaiian Sun, so it’s

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM

been such a blessing and honor to be the spokespeople for something that’s so meaningful to us.”

Ruth and Mike met in Smyrna and are raising their family here. Mike spent his career teasing his entrepreneurial spirit launching new brands into retail, but always knew he wanted to do his own thing.

“One thing that it always kind of came back to was food.”

Raised by a Korean mother and Alabamian father, Hawaiian food reminded him of home.

Ruth explains that the plate lunch, L&L’s signature dish, is “very much an amalgamation of multiple cultures.”

The story goes back to the pineapple and sugarcane farm workers in the fields of Hawaii, who came from across the world and shared food that ended up all on one plate, like L&L’s barbecue mix plate that features short rib, beef, and chicken.

“It’s much more than just a barbecue plate. You’re honoring the cultures of your ancestors,” says Ruth. “That’s part of the magic that comes from being from Hawaii.”

While most of the restaurant’s clientele consists of newcomers, a good bit are former islanders who say the food makes them feel at home.

“I want people to feel like everybody’s family,” says Mike, “to keep that “Ohana” feel about it.”

Your island plate awaits—stop by and taste the aloha!

From Pennington’s Pen:

Gr o wing up, I have fond memories of visiting my great-grandfather on his farm in rural Ala bama. I called him “Big Daddy,” and I loved g o ing to his house to get a glass of ice-cold water and a chilled Goo-Goo Cluster from his refr igerator. Next to his house was a small, s hingle roof structure that matched the look of h is house. It was a well house, and inside of it wa s a deep well that supplied his house with fr esh wa ter.

At Smyr na First Baptist, we think often about th e importance of building wells in our community. This is a metaphor that we use to describe the ministries we seek to build in Smy rna that introduces people to the beauty of a Sav ior who loves them indescribably. John 4 records a time in Jesus’ ministry when He went out of his way to have a life changing c o nv er sa tion with a woman. After meeting Jesu s, she would never be the same again. Tha t is what we pray will happen around the min is terial wells that we build. We want people to be blessed by an offer of real community. We wa nt to serve the needs of Smyrna in ways th at are selfless and pure-hearted. But it isn’t a well that changes them. More than anything else, we want thirsty people, parched by the

Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. ”

c h allenges of life, to go to the well and discover Jesu s. When they do, they will drink of the water th at C hrist promises will cause them to never be th ir s ty again.

On e of the wells that our church has built in our community is Upward Basketball. For over 20 years, we have sponsored this ministry to introduce peo p l e to a life-giving, soul-satisfying relationship with God that comes to us when we place our faith an d hope in Christ. If your family would like to be a p ar t of this year’s Upward Basketball Ministry, I ho p e you will sign up and jump in! This year, we are r ec ruiting the help of volunteers to make this s eason one of our best we’ve ever had. If you would like to be a part of a church that is passionate abou t bu ilding wells here in Smyrna, we’ve love for you j o in us in what God is doing here.

An Autumn Walk Along the Trolley Line

An enchanting stroll where past and present quietly intertwine.

Tucked just off Atlanta Road, you’ll find Trolley Line Park in Vinings. It’s not a grand, sprawling destination, but rather a deliberate step back in time along a quieter, simpler pathway. It’s the kind of hidden gem you stumble upon and feel compelled to keep to yourself, especially in the crisp air of October.

Leaving the city’s noise behind, you step onto a cobblestone path shaded by the graceful branches of crepe myrtle trees. In autumn, their delicate blossoms have faded, giving way to a new kind of magic. The leaves, once a vibrant green, begin their colorful transformation, painting the canopy in shades of yellow,

In autumn, their delicate blossoms have faded, giving way to a new kind of magic.

orange, and red. A carpet of fallen leaves crunches softly beneath your feet. Lined with street lamps, the path is bathed in a soft, golden glow that turns an ordinary stroll into a magical journey.

This isn’t just a park—it’s a preserved moment. The air hums with a peaceful energy, a stark contrast to the nearby traffic, carrying the earthy scent of autumn. You may find yourself listening for whispers from the past. Every step feels like a discovery, leading you deeper into a place where the present politely steps aside for a touch of timeless charm. The path winds toward a small wooden archway, a final invitation to leave the modern world behind. Trolley Line Park is a place of quiet reflection, a perfect little escape for anyone seeking serenity in the heart of Atlanta’s suburbs.

PUTNAM

Business Foundations

Each month I cover topics relevant to small business startup and operations. The objective is to share insider knowledge that I have learned in the many years of running TRUE Space, a Smyrna based virtual office, workspace rental, corporate formation, and registered agent service business. These services help small businesses get up and running, reduce risk, improve their business image, expand, and maximize their chances for success.

The beginning… Once you have your idea for your business venture, have selected a business name, and have some capital to start, it’s time to build the foundation of your business. The three required foundational components, in order that you need to establish them, are address, website domain, and phone number.

Business Address : Nearly every step along the path you will be asked your business address, so you should establish this first. You absolutely do not want to associate your home address with your business. The internet can link and display that address for all to see. Separating your personal life from your business life it a must. There are plenty of crazy people out there, and no matter how well you operate your business, there will always be someone who fails to read instructions and is unhappy. You don’t want them showing up on your doorstep. A PO Box or a retail mailbox store address is typically a death sentence for a business. One quick look at Google and anyone sees your business is in a Publix or Kroger shopping center. Similarly using your home address can result in your house showing up on Google when people search for your business. You want to show potential customers that you are established enough to have a business address. The same applies to meeting clients. You should never meet a potential client at a coffee shop or other unprofessional location. A virtual office, located in an office building, with rentable meeting space is a must have foundational item for any small business operating out of a home or for a mobile business.

Website Domain : You need a website. You want a domain name that aligns with your business name. With millions of businesses out there you want to find and buy a domain before finalizing your business name. There are many services like GoDaddy.com or Wix.com that can help you purchase a domain, build a business website, and provide email service. The domain name typically stays where it is purchased, but gets electronically “pointed” to wherever the servers hosting your website are located. Your domain service and website can be through the same or different platforms. My recommendation: Set up email service to use your domain through Google Admin Console (paid service). Your business email will operate just like Gmail.

Phone Number : Your business phone number will likely be displayed everywhere so you don’t want to change it. Don’t make the mistake of using your cell phone as your business number, and don’t add an extra phone line to your personal phone plan. Your business needs to own the phone number. There are some very low-cost services like grasshopper.com where you can purchase a phone number, get a phone tree (Press 1 for x), voicemail, call forwarding, etc. They offer apps that enable you to make outbound calls from your personal cell phone that show your business phone number on caller ID. Warning: Never use a phone number provided by a virtual office service since it is not owned by you. Plus, if you leave the virtual office, you lose your phone number that you already pasted everywhere.

If you already launched your business without the 3 key foundational pieces, it’s never too late to add them.
