On Launching Jewelry Brand gorjana, Why Scottsdale is Special, and Why They Leave Emails Until the Next Day

I’m writing this as I sit on an airplane, thousands of feet in the air, heading home from a trip that was almost a year in the making (you try coordinating six busy adults’ schedules to all get away at the same time!).
I’d met up with my college housemates for a weekend. We’d arrived from around the country, using a year of milestone birthdays as the catalyst to finally get together. It had been a few years since we’d all seen each other—and many more since we’d graduated college.

The conversations flowed easily, from catching up on families and work to reminiscing about old adventures, and soon we were creating new memories together (might I recommend the walking ghost tour in Savannah, Georgia?).
It may sound corny, but spending time with old friends—who knew you when, who accept you unconditionally, and who always make you laugh—is truly good for the soul.
It’s so easy for time to speed by. I know for me, the days and years flew as I was consumed with children, work, and simply getting through each day. But this weekend reminded me how important it is to make the time to nurture both ourselves and our longtime friendships.
Yes, true friends will always be there, and it doesn’t matter how much time has passed—you pick up right where you left off. But making the time to reconnect and to share a meal, a story, or a laugh, fills a part of us that nothing else quite can.
The holidays are a time of connection. Whether you’re connecting with loved ones, your community through small acts of kindness, or your dreams and hopes for the year ahead, remember that it’s these moments that make life so meaningful.
As 2025 winds down into a whirlwind of celebrations and to-do lists, I hope you find time to enjoy your loved ones and friends, both old and new, near and far. After all, isn’t that what life’s about?
Happy holidays, Happy New Year, and here’s to a wonderful 2026!

This issue is full of fun and celebration! The holidays truly are a magical time of year. I feel like even though it can be a stressful time, there are plenty of laughs and good memories made throughout the holiday season.
Growing up in a household where we celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas, I felt like the whole month was filled with parties and celebrations. We would have a tea party with my Nanny every holiday season. Fancy dresses, a real fine china tea set, mini tea sandwiches, and of course petit fours were all part of the celebration. My sister and I even got to put two sugar cubes in our tea.
My Jewish grandparents would always host the first night of Hanukkah. We would eat the most delicious pot roast (which I have yet to master), noodle kugel, and more. We would of course play dreidel, and I’m pretty sure I would reward myself with each piece of gelt I won. Let’s just say the games never lasted that long.
ʼTis the season to give, and this issue has some great gift-giving ideas, from extravagant meals followed by a day at the spa to the gift of time and helping those in need.
Family traditions, new and old, can start from anywhere. It’s about the memories we make, the impressions we leave on those around us, and enjoying Scottsdale’s most beautiful time of year.
Happy holidays!

Gorjana Reidel of gorjana on Scottsdale, Her Time at ASU, Her Jewelry Brand, and Why She’s Reconnecting With the Area Now
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY GORJANA
It was 2004 when Gorjana and Jason Reidel founded the now iconic and nationwide jewelry company gorjana on their apartment floor in Laguna Beach, California.
The brand is known for its effortless, everyday pieces.
The couple’s Arizona roots run deep. Not only did Gorjana grow up in Scottsdale, but she began her retail journey at Scottsdale Fashion Square, working at GUESS and BCBG during her college years. In fact, that job proved fortuitous in many ways.
Although she and Jason first met while both were students at Arizona State University (ASU), it was a chance visit from Jason to BCBG years later that sparked both their personal relationship and the eventual creation of gorjana.
Today, Jason is now CEO of the brand.
In a full-circle moment, gorjana opened its 100th store at Scottsdale Fashion Square in April 2025. There are other locations in the city, including at Scottsdale Quarter, and today, there are more than 110 across the country.
While the couple now lives with their children in California, they are back here often—including to visit their son, who is carrying on the family tradition and now attending ASU.
Here, we caught up with Gorjana to talk about Scottsdale, business, and family.
YOU AND JASON MET AT ASU! HOW DID YOU MEET THERE?
Greek life! He was a senior when I was a freshman and our paths crossed when I started college, but we reconnected about four years later. The rest is history.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE ASU?
I was an immigrant kid who moved from Serbia to Canada at age 7, and then from Canada to Arizona just as I was starting high school. Only a few years later, I was already looking at colleges, so another big move wasn’t really on my radar. I was happy to stay a little closer to home, and ASU had just about everything I was looking for.
YOU GRADUATED WITH A DEGREE IN … Business.
WHEN WAS THE MOMENT YOU KNEW YOU WANTED TO LAUNCH A JEWELRY BRAND?
There wasn’t one defining moment; it was more a series of events that led me here. I started out working in the jewelry department at Neiman Marcus right after college, which first sparked my interest. I never set out with the intention of launching a jewelry brand, but it just kept unfolding that way, and we leaned into it. At the end of the day, we’ve always been very follow-your-gut people.
GORJANA HAS A SIGNATURE AESTHETIC—WHAT DRIVES THAT LOOK?
I draw a lot of inspiration from our home in Laguna Beach. There’s something so special about the casual California lifestyle, and I want anyone who walks into our stores to feel like they’ve stepped into a coastal bungalow. The coast is where I feel most at peace, and I’ve always wanted that same sense of ease and beauty to come through in our jewelry and our spaces.
WHICH HAS BEEN THE TOP-SELLING PRODUCT OF ALL TIME?
Our most popular product has to be the Parker Necklace. I designed it years ago, and it’s become a true staple in our Classics Collection. The beauty of Parker is that it’s more than just a necklace; it’s that core layering piece you can build on. Add charms to make it personal, pair it with other chains to create your own look, or wear it solo and let it shine. It’s the kind of piece that works hard for you every day, no matter how you style it.
YOUR FAVORITE PIECE THAT YOU’VE CREATED?
I feel like this shifts with every collection. I genuinely get excited about each piece, because there’s something so special about bringing an idea to life from start to finish. You start to appreciate all the little moments that lead to a launch, and that makes it impossible to choose just one favorite.

ANY PRODUCTS YOU’RE ANTICIPATING AS BEING TOP SELLERS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?
Anything personalized. Whether it’s an alphabet, bespoke, or birthstone piece, our customers love these—and they make a perfect gift!
THE ONE PIECE OF JEWELRY YOU NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT …
Honestly, it’s too many to count, especially since I’m always testing new product samples. I love layering and mixing things together, so there’s never a day I leave the house without a stack of jewelry. If I had to choose the pieces that are most consistent, it would definitely be my rings. They’ve become part of my everyday uniform, even as I rotate in new designs.
HOW DO YOU AND JASON BALANCE YOUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE TOGETHER?
We try really hard to leave work at work. When we’re together as a family (at the dinner table, at one of our kids’ sports games) we’re fully present. The email inbox will always be there the next day.
YOU HAVE TWO CHILDREN. THE BEST PART OF BEING A MOM IS … Watching them learn and grow into their own unique personalities has been such a gift. They have different interests, and fostering those passions and encouraging them to explore who they are is so important to me. One of them just left for college and seeing him step into the world on his own has been amazing. It’s rewarding in a whole new way to watch them discover life through their own experiences.
GORJANA HAS GROWN FROM A SMALL OPERATION INTO A NATIONAL NAME. WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS FUELED THAT GROWTH THE MOST?
Definitely our customers and really feeling like we understand what they want. We’ve built the collection so there’s truly something for everyone, whether it’s a piece you wear every day or something more personal you layer in. What makes it all possible is the incredible team behind the brand. They are passionate, truly the best out there, and absolutely obsessed with creating the best customer experience. From the way we design our jewelry to the store environments we build, the goal is always to make people feel welcome and inspired, the kind of place where you actually want to spend time.

YOU RECENTLY OPENED YOUR 100TH STORE—AND BACK WHERE IT ALL BEGAN! CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THAT?
My very first retail job was at Scottsdale Fashion Square at BCBG, and funnily enough, that’s where Jason popped in and we reconnected after college, a moment that ended up changing the rest of our lives, though we had no idea at the time. I also spent so much of my free time shopping there in high school and college, so coming back now with our store, and getting to visit and do the same with my teen daughter, has been incredibly special.
FUTURE PLANS?
Continuing to meet our customers where they are all while remaining grounded in our Laguna Beach roots.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING ON THE BUSINESS, WE’D FIND YOU …
I love being outdoors hiking, cheering on my kids at their games, going out to dinner as a family, winding down with a good movie, or spending time together out on the boat. Those moments are so important for me to recharge and stay grounded.
YOUR FAVORITE PLACES AROUND HERE ARE …
We’ve been staying at The Global Ambassador and absolutely love it. The food is incredible, and the spa is such a treat. For grubby Italian, DelFalco’s is our go-to with the best old-school sandwiches. And anytime we are here, we always make a stop at Le Grande Orange. Their breakfast is a favorite of the whole family.
ONE THING WE’D BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
That I was born in Serbia and did not learn how to speak English until I was 7!
ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?
We’ve been spending more time back in Arizona over the last few years since opening our stores, and it’s been so special to reconnect with where I grew up. What makes it even more meaningful now is being able to share it with our son, who’s at ASU. In a way, we’re getting to relive the college experience through him—just 25 years later—and seeing it all through his eyes has been such a treat.

The holiday season calls for extravagance. From caviar and foie gras to buttery seafood and perfectly seared meats, these dishes are made for those who believe in making December a month for the taste buds to remember.
Luxury begins at Café Monarch with its Caviar Service ($125 to $395 per ounce). Presented ice-chilled with mother-ofpearl spoons, each Sasanian Caviar offers nutty, creamy richness with a clean finish. Served with blinis and potato pavés, it honors timeless culinary elegance.
Élephante Scottsdale elevates simplicity with its Caviar Toast ($65). Golden Osetra caviar crowns crisp toast layered with rich egg butter and bright chives, a balance of briny and buttery flavor that captures coastal-inspired refinement.
Catch Scottsdale adds another twist with its Truffle Sashimi ($35). Tuna, hamachi, caviar, and black truffle purée combine in a luxurious study of texture and taste.
COURSE’s Cory Oppold turns decadence into art with his Foie Gras Torchon ($40). Grade A foie gras from La Belle Farms is cured, whipped, and dusted with cherry powder for a velvety finish, then paired with cherry jam, pickled and fresh cherries, miso brown butter crumble, and Japanese milk bread—a master class in sweet, savory, and rich balance.

ZuZu chef Russell LaCasce brings similar opulence to the pasta course with his Tableside Parm Wheel Black Truffle Alfredo ($65). A truffle-kissed cream cloud and final flourish of shaved truffles and chives completes the presentation.
Lobster lovers find bliss at Uchi Scottsdale with the Lobster Maki ($22), where sweet lobster meets brown butter, capers, asparagus, and lemon. Wrapped in sushi rice, the dish delivers creamy, tangy, and crunchy perfection.
Bourbon Steak takes indulgence to new heights with its Maine Lobster Pot Pie (MP). Golden pastry dough covers tender lobster in brandied cream with market vegetables, potatoes, and black truffles. Presented tableside and dramatically unveiled, it transforms dinner into a show.
topped with yuzu kosho aioli, wasabi, and crispy leeks. Presented with dry ice drama, it is a feast for both eyes and palate.

The Americano’s Wagyu Beef Cheek Tortellini ($38) is filled with slow-braised beef and served with horseradish garlic sauce, crispy shallots, black truffle jus, and chives, balancing savory richness with bright herbal warmth.
This season, moderation can wait, because being a little naughty has never tasted so nice.
European elegance shines through in J&G Steakhouse’s Sautéed Dover Sole ($70). The delicate fish is pan-fried and basted in butter until golden, then filleted tableside and finished with brown butter, capers, shallots, lemon, and parsley.
The Living Room delivers refined comfort with its Grilled Norwegian Salmon ($34), featuring crispskinned fillet atop vegetable couscous with lemon caper butter.
Showmanship takes center stage with KAUBOI’s Smoking Tuna ($32). Golden tart shells cradle avocado mash and bluefin tuna marinated in miso,
Sexy Roman reimagines a classic with Bone
In Veal Milanese ($82), a crisp, golden cutlet topped with tomatoes, arugula, lemon, and sea salt, while Mastro’s City Hall indulges the senses with Roasted Bone Marrow ($30), which is cooked to a molten finish with buttery texture and savory depth.
Faro & Brag’s Tablas for Two ($175) stuns with seared A5 Miyazaki Wagyu, scallops, lamb loin, and shrimp on a hot stone—interactive luxury at its finest.
Finally, Elements closes the curtain with its 48-ounce Smoked Tomahawk ($255). Cold-smoked over mesquite and finished on a wood grill, the K4 Ranch ribeye is carved tableside beside roasted mushrooms and seasonal sides. Bold, smoky, and unforgettable, it defines indulgence.
This season, moderation can wait, because being a little naughty has never tasted so nice.

Here are three idyllic itineraries sure to charm the foodie, satiate the thrill seeker, and captivate the beach lover.
With daily flights on American Airlines from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport directly into Sonoma’s Santa Rosa Airport, visiting Northern California wine country is easier than ever.
Begin at Jordan Vineyard & Winery, long considered Sonoma’s gold standard for culinary hospitality. The signature tour and tasting feels like a roaming celebration of flavor, with al fresco pours, chef-driven pairings, and seasonal dishes. Jordan is also unique in that it offers on-site accommodations. Stay in an elegant chateau suite or retreat to the whimsical Wildwood Cottage, which provides a storybook view of the estate.
From Jordan, Sterling Vineyards is a scenic 30-minute drive into Napa’s Calistoga region. There, take a sky-high solar-powered aerial tram adventure to its tasting room, which sits 300 feet
above the valley floor. The ascent reveals a breathtaking panorama of Napa. Next, stroll through alcoves and terraces dotted with tasting stops. The Founders Experience is the pinnacle for food lovers, a seated progression of exclusive wines curated alongside thoughtful small bites.
A short drive leads to Charles Krug, home to Napa’s oldest tasting room. Here, history is paired with indulgent culinary flights featuring chocolate, caviar, or wood-fired pizza presented with modern flair in preserved heritage spaces.
To take the trip over the top, end at Vermeil Wines, founded by area native and NFL Hall of Fame coach Dick Vermeil. Its four-course dinner—a rarity in wine country—is revered for pairing legacy wines with dishes crafted to reveal their depth, creating a finale worthy of a pilgrimage.

Park City sits just 30 miles from Salt Lake City, making it one of the most accessible mountain playgrounds in the west. Its story began with silver, which first drew miners to the area in the 19th century, before skiing transformed it into a winter capital. Today, Park City Mountain stretches across 7,300 skiable acres with 330 trails, 43 lifts, and eight terrain parks. Nearby, Deer Valley Resort offers a second option devoted exclusively to skiers and is currently expanding toward more than 5,000 acres of terrain.
Pendry Park City combines refined alpine luxury with direct lift access, making it the perfect home base. The resort features 175 guest rooms and suites dressed in warm textures, contemporary designs, and sweeping mountain views. A full-service spa, rooftop pool, and elegant après venues create a polished retreat built for adventurers who crave indulgence between adrenaline-filled outings.
On the slopes, thrill-seekers can carve through bowls, glades, and groomers, or join guided tours that reveal both hidden terrain and fascinating mining history embedded across the mountain. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, the region also offers dog sledding through snowy valleys, snowmobiling across high elevation meadows, zip line courses that fly above the landscape, and Utah Olympic Park, where visitors can witness world-class training facilities and ride a bobsled along the professional track for a true Olympic rush.
Less than two hours by plane from the Valley, Cabo San Lucas has become a perennial favorite for travelers seeking sun, sea, and a warm winter reset. Its position on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula delivers gentle breezes, endless blue water, and long afternoons that feel worlds away from desert chill.
Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos takes the experience several steps further for guests who want immersion in oceanfront living. Set along a pristine coastline, the resort blends bold natural beauty with contemporary elegance. Its 315 suites and penthouses offer generous living space, many with sweeping terraces and wide-angle views of the sea. Larger groups gravitate toward three- and four-bedroom residences that feature outdoor hot tubs, dining areas, and spacious gathering rooms.

FAMILY TIES REVIVE SOUTHWESTERN ART-
IST’S LEGACY
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY WESTERN SPIRIT: SCOTTSDALE’S MUSEUM OF THE WEST

More than 70 artworks by Southwestern artist Mac Schweitzer— many unseen for more than six decades—are now on view at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. Mac Schweitzer: A Southwest Maverick Rediscovered marks the first comprehensive museum exhibition of her work, featuring paintings, sketches, prints, and archival materials donated by her family in 2024.
Born Mary Alice Cox in 1921 in Cleveland, Schweitzer trained at the Cleveland School of Art and adopted her initials, M.A.C., as her professional name. Known as one of Tucson’s “Early Moderns,” she became celebrated for her bold murals, including those at the former Trader Vic’s in Old Town Scottsdale, the Tucson YMCA, and a 100-foot mural of galloping horses at Tucson Garden Dance Hall in 1952. Her dynamic depictions of the Southwest’s people, animals, and landscapes earned acclaim from collectors and galleries during her lifetime, though her work faded from public view after her passing 63 years ago.
The new exhibition not only revives Schweitzer’s artistic legacy but also carries a personal connection: guest curator Dr. Ann Lane Hedlund organized the show in memory of her late husband and Mac’s son, Kit Schweitzer.
“By studying the long-hidden family art collections and historic archives, I’ve been thrilled to rediscover and restore Mac’s place among the Southwest’s most significant mid-century artists,” says Hedlund.
Here, we speak with the museum’s chief curator, Andrew Nelson, about the unique exhibition, which is on display through September 2026.
WHAT MAKES MAC SCHWEITZER’S WORK SO SPECIAL?
In the 1950s, Mac Schweitzer was a household name across the Southwest. Her paintings won top prizes, appeared in major exhibitions, and adorned the walls of countless homes, as well as public places and businesses like the old Trader Vic’s in Scottsdale. Critics hailed her as one of the great Western artists of her day. She painted the Southwest—its landscapes, animals, and people—with honesty and immediacy. She was prolific, and also her own best promoter. Which meant that, after her early death, she faded from memory. Until now.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE HER IMAGES?
Dynamic yet contemplative. She often favored earthy, luminous tones and confident, gestural brushwork that captured the immediacy of her subjects. Her paintings feel honest rather than idealized. There’s a stillness that lingers, as if she painted not just what she saw, but what it felt like to be there.
WHY IS SHOWCASING HER WORKS IMPORTANT TO WESTERN SPIRIT?
Western Spirit exists to tell the story of the West through its art and visual culture, and Schweitzer is an important part of that narrative. She represents a generation of women artists who lived the Western experience as fully as any of their male counterparts but whose contributions have too often gone unrecognized. In dedicating a major retrospective to her work, we’re affirming our commitment to presenting a broader, more inclusive view of Western art—one that honors authenticity, diversity, and artistic excellence.
WHERE WERE THESE IMAGES PRIOR TO THIS EXHIBIT?
Most of the works in this exhibition come from the Schweitzer family’s own collection, which was generously donated to Western Spirit in 2022. Additional pieces have been loaned by family and friends, private collectors, and other

museums—bringing together, for the first time in decades, the full range of Schweitzer’s remarkable career.
YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE ITEM FROM THIS EXHIBIT?
We have more than 70 artworks on exhibit, so it’s impossible to pick just one. But two special items are Mac’s personal scrapbooks from her youth in Ohio. We’ve digitized these for visitors to explore, page by page. They’re filled with magazine clippings of cowboys, horses, and rodeo stars, but arranged creatively, with some sketches and annotations. It’s a charming glimpse of the great Western artist that Mac would soon become.
YOU HAVE A PERSONAL CONNECTION TO THIS EXHIBIT AND THE ARTIST. CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT THAT?
The show is deeply personal for our guest curator, Dr. Ann Lane Hedlund. Ann was married to Schweitzer’s son, Kit, and together they began planning a book about Mac’s art. Kit passed in 2019, but Ann continued the project, ultimately writing Mac Schweitzer: A Southwest Maverick and Her Art, just published by the University of Arizona Press. Ann also established a permanent home for Mac’s work and archives here at Western Spirit. Ann’s curatorial vision gives this exhibition its emotional heart. The exhibition is grounded not only in Ann’s research, but in family memory, and in a profound admiration for an artist who lived ahead of her time.

• 1 shot of espresso (or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee)
• 3/4 cup milk
• 2 tbsp gingerbread syrup
• Whipped cream
For the gingerbread syrup:
• 1/2 cup water
• 1/2 cup brown sugar
• 1 tbsp molasses
• 1/2 tsp ground ginger
• 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1/4 tsp nutmeg
• 1/8 tsp ground cloves
• 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Optional toppings:
• Ground cinnamon or nutmeg for dusting
• Marshmallow
• Crushed gingerbread cookie around the rim or on top
Make the gingerbread syrup:
In a small saucepan, combine water, brown sugar, molasses, and spices. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract, and let cool. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Prepare the drink:
Brew your espresso or strong coffee. Heat and froth your milk. In your glass, add 2 tablespoons of the gingerbread syrup. Pour in the espresso, then the steamed milk, stirring gently to combine. Spoon frothed milk or whipped cream on top. Dust with cinnamon or nutmeg.
Optional: Rim the glass with crushed gingerbread cookie crumbs for extra flair.
