Welcome to our inaugural “Style” Issue! So many creative individuals call the SYV home. It has been an honor and a privilege to learn more about our local businesses and even more about the people behind them. With September upon us, I can’t help but think immediately of Maya Rudolph’s SNL skit, “Sweater Weather”. If you are not familiar, it is worth a google! By now the kids are back in school and are [hopefully] back to their routines. Friday nights are for Pirate Football and we now have an excuse to wear our Uggs, sweaters, winter coats, and beanies.
Style is such a small word, yet it has such vast meaning. It goes beyond the clothes we wear; it influences every aspect of our lives. Even choosing to “not have a style” is a style. One thing I have learned over time is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. Each generation seems to have its “thing”. The 70’s generation rocked amazing bell bottoms and platform shoes, the 80s with their shoulder pads and leg warmers, the 90s brought grunge, baggy jeans, and overalls to the forefront, and then Y2K came… Since 2000 it feels like most fashion trends are pulled from previous generations with an added flare of some sort. With that said, it is okay to ignore the do’s and don’ts of GQ or Vogue. What truly matters is that you are proud and confident in who you are, not necessarily what you are “told” to be.
Whether you are a millennial rocking ankle socks that the kids no longer call cool or wearing a big and bold hat that you’ve always wanted to wear but have been too nervous to… own it. Be proud! Do not nervously apologize for your distinctive taste.
We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or even explore familiar ones. There is so much in the Santa Ynez Valley to uplift your spirits, ignite your creativity, and keep you feeling inspired. Enjoy! Go Pirates!
Cheers,

In our Valley, we do our best to lead an intentional lifestyle. Our community prides itself in supporting local. Buying our organic produce at Finley Farms, shopping at local boutiques, enjoying locally grown and produced wines, this list goes on… These priorities encourage a slower, more thoughtful, and quality way of living.
Generally, in today’s world, you can’t help but notice a demand for more. Fast Fashion is quickly produced trends sold at low price points. While this availability and access can be tempting, this trend has nefarious undertones that have long-standing consequences for our planet. According to CoherentMI, in the USA, Fast Fashion was worth “$41.15 Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach $59.85 Billion by 2030.” This leads to overconsumption, overproduction, and a wasteful, meaningless purpose. Fast Fashion merchandise tends to use inexpensive, synthetic fabrics like polyester, which shed microfibers over time - ending up in landfills and our water systems.
On the flip side of this trend, Slow Fashion focuses on making thoughtful decisions about your wardrobe, buying less but buying quality pieces, and shopping vintage, and earth-friendly fibers. Shopping with purpose leads you to a wardrobe that stands the test of time, in style and quality.
Here are the recommendations from Plenty Boutique for an authentic, sustainable look that feels oh so Santa Ynez.

“Slow Fashion focuses on making thoughtful decisions about your wardrobe, buying less and buying quality pieces, and shopping vintage, and earth-friendly fibers. Shopping with purpose leads you to a wardrobe that stands the test of time, in style and quality.”
We find ourselves reaching for these most days, due to their versatile, authentic SY feel. Find a great vintage pair that has that worn-in, loved look! We love boots with everything - from your best jeans to a summer dress, and you’ll find me styling them with a cool pair of LeBon sweats.

Choosing the fabrics you wear on your body is not only a sustainable choice, but a healthy one! Buying organic cotton reduces the amount of toxins you’re exposed to, and also lessens the amount of pesticides in our water supply. Choose fabrics that are long lasting, and feel good to wear! Think Linen, Organic cotton, and Tencel (a newer fabric made from sustainable wood pulp!) Honest Cotton is a brand we love!

Too much stretch, too short or too long, and trendy embellishments can make it feel impossible to find a great pair. Our suggestion is to stick with a flattering fit with minimal stretch, in a cut that is universally flattering and timeless. We love Levis 501s, or our new favorite brand Daze has nailed the effortless denim vibe - it’s our new eco-friendly go-to!

Dresses… dresses… dresses… forever!
Our hearts are forever in love with feminine silhouettes and dresses that make you feel beautiful no matter the occasion. A breathable cotton dress with a beautiful block print can take you to brunch with friends, the Solvang farmers market, or the school pick-up line. My favorite sustainable brands include Christy Dawn, Spell, and Kivari.

ARTICLE BY RYAN SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SISTER B STUDIOS

Rancho Del Sueno, translated to “Ranch of Dreams” is the backdrop for Sister B Studios. On a recent SY afternoon, I caught up with the masters behind this fire-brand photography business. Within moments of the interview, it became very apparent these sisters were less about photography and more about capturing emotions that will be felt for decades, and they do it with an old-school flare.
Talia and Bri Burkett are deeply rooted fourth-generation “Valley” locals with a knack for throwing a lens at meaningful moments and capturing raw emotion as it unfolds. Talia is the
older sister and both were educated at Dunn School, where they found their love for photography in the film lab and darkroom twisting rolls of film. Bri specifically recalls cultivating moments where it came to life; “I fell in love instantly”, she smirked. Both sisters credit their time at Dunn School, and specifically educator Cam Jacoby. “That’s where it all started.” Mike Mesikep was another local mentor early on. “These men were awesome and taught us the traditions of film.” Talia recalls, “Bri always had a camera and she would just shoot to shoot. It was an appendage of her. You see the raw and small

moments that make a picture. There are so many layers to that…There’s something special about watching your photos come to life.”
The sisters openly admit they have different outlooks and styles, but Bri was quick to remark, “That is the beauty of what works well and meshes for us.” One aspect that is the same; both of these sisters have a natural eye for capturing the feeling of special moments and translating that into their work. “It is art.” The duo can connect with their clients, which brings a feeling of comfort to everyone. From that, they’re able to capture natural moments. Talia and Bri agree their CONTINUED >
specialty is doing just that. “You have to shoot it in the raw. Anyone can set up a pose or move a chin ‘just so’ for the perfect shot. We’re different. We’re looking for the perfect shot in its natural state. That is capturing life, emotion, and the moment. And it is beautiful.” While Sister B Studios has a strong focus on wedding photography, they also focus on shooting “life”, or as they refer to it, “human-focused.”
Talia recounted a deeply personal experience where she captured the last remaining days of a close friend’s ill father. “You can’t have a photograph unless there are highlights and shadows, and if you can’t accept the shadows, that is denying half of our human experience.” “We don’t edit out the ‘bad.’ We don’t manipulate. We live in reality. When you start to manipulate an image, it all becomes a fantasy. Loving yourself is a revolutionary act, and we try to capture
the authenticity of that…What we do is so much bigger than a picture. That is what it is all about.”
With technology advancing, Sister B still has an oldschool approach, kinda. “I was such a purist. I refused to get a digital camera for the longest time”, Talia grinned. “I like the old-school way…In a world where everything is so accessible, old-school prevails.” Bri was quick to exclaim film was how she fell in love with photography, but when she went away to college, “they only taught digital.” “We go through every photograph, one by one.” Both recognize technological advancements are forward progress. “You can’t deny that. We can’t live in the past, but we can find ways to honor it.” Talia remarked, “We don’t strive to ‘pump out work.’ We want it to be authentic, and to provide you with the most incredible photographs of a moment.”

A four-year letterman at Santa Ynez High School, Lassahn transcended the conventional boundaries of sports, mastering not one but three disciplines with unrivaled prowess and dedication. Named Athlete of the Year in 2023, Lassahn’s impact was felt across the pool and the court.
A formidable force in men's water polo, Lassahn dazzled with an astounding 133 goals, earning the coveted Mountain League MVP title. His dominance in the pool was equally impressive; twice honored as the Water Polo All-Mountain League First Team selection, he set the bar high for future competitors On the basketball court, he carved his name into the record books, amassing 1,000 career points and securing a spot on the Mountain League First Team all four years. His athleticism extended to swimming, where he made waves at the CA State Championships, clinching top honors with school records in the 50-yard, 100-yard, and 200-yard freestyle events. Lassahn, driven by his remarkable past and an unwavering ambition, is at the forefront of their quest for an NCAA championship this fall.

LET’S TALK ABOUT HAIRSTYLING TRENDS! WHAT DO YOU SEE ON THE HORIZON FOR THE FALL 2024 SEASON?
We are starting to see the layered bob stick around even as we trend into fall and winter. Lots of fringe layers, face-framing bangs, and concentrating on fullness around the face. There is still a lot of longer hair around but the framing layers in front are starting to get popular.
WHAT ABOUT COLOR? TRADITIONALLY WE GO LIGHT IN THE SUMMER AND DARKER IN THE FALL…DO YOU SEE THAT HOLDING IN 2024?
I think there is a trend toward a more natural dimension. A more “rooted” look if you will. Not really the super dark tones, but backing off into the ashy or more neutral browns. Blondes are starting to tone it down as well. Still focusing on some brightness around the face, but overall everyone wants to add depth and dimension to their look in the fall and winter.

I LOVE A MORE NATURAL LOOK. ARE EXTENSIONS STILL HOLDING POPULARITY?
Extensions are still around and consistently being requested. But, for the most part, we aren’t seeing people add huge lengths to their hair. It’s more to add volume and fullness and to give more frame to that shorter cut we are seeing.
WHAT IS SOME ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO WOMEN WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN TRYING EXTENSIONS FOR THE FIRST TIME?
The technology has come such a long way in the last couple of years. Now there are so many methods, textures, densities, and so forth that we can offer our clients. The most common are sew-in and tape-ins which everyone knows so well. I would suggest the sew-in wefts for a first-time extension style. They have a great bead base that really conforms to the head and truly feels light and comfortable. They blend so seamlessly into hair now and the wefts themselves have so many different degrees of volume for whatever “look” someone might be trying to achieve.
MAKES SENSE TO ME! OTHER THAN EXTENSIONS, WHAT OTHER TRENDS MAY BE STICKING AROUND OR COMING UP? IS TINSEL AROUND TO STAY?
Yes, I definitely think tinsel is going to stick around for a bit longer. A lot of those early 2000 trends are coming back too. I am seeing a small resurgence of the feather extensions and the chunky highlights. We have kiddos coming in for tinsel through the older generation looking for a temporary kick to their style for a vacation or a celebration.

BLENDING TRADITION AND MODERNITY WITH A SANTA
“If you can dream it, I can create it.”

In the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, where the sun-kissed hillsides whisper tales of old, resides a creator whose artistry blends the rugged spirit of the West with the free-spirited bohemian vibe of coastal living. Meet Natascha Ruiz, the passionate soul behind Flame Kissed, where each hat tells a story as unique as the hands that craft it.
Pyrography, derived from the Greek words “pur” (fire) and “graphos” (writing), is an ancient art form dating back to the Han Dynasty in China around 200 BC. It involves using heated tools to create intricate designs on various surfaces, typically wood but also leather and other materials. This technique allows artists to etch precise patterns and imagery, blending precision with artistic expression.
“If you can dream it, I can create it,” Natascha muses, capturing the essence of her bespoke creations. Her journey intertwines with a deep love for art and
a profound connection to her roots. Raised among cowboys and inspired by her mother’s free-spirited creativity, Natascha’s style marries traditional craftsmanship with modern flair, incorporating elements like abalone shells that reflect the coastal charm.
For Natascha, the joy of her craft lies not only in the artistic process but in the profound impact her creations have on others. “The most enjoyable aspect is seeing the joy and wonder they bring,” she shares. Whether adorned with intricate pyrography or vibrant hand-painted designs, each piece becomes a cherished keepsake—a testament to Natascha’s dedication to transforming raw materials into art.
Natascha’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Balancing her creative passion with motherhood across continents after a challenging divorce tested her resilience. Yet, fueled by unwavering support from her husband, family,
“There’s a dance between preserving heritage and embracing new possibilities.”

and community, she emerged stronger, flourishing in her art and finding love anew. “COVID threw me a lot of lemons, but somehow I came out flourishing, feeling like I was given a second chance at life,” Natascha shares candidly. Her determination saw her crisscrossing the globe countless times, traversing vast distances to be with her children.
Amidst the chaos, the Santa Ynez Valley remained her sanctuary—a place where she reconnected with old friends and eventually found love again.
Central to Flame Kissed’s charm is the mobile hat bar—a unique concept that brings her creative sanctuary to life. The idea came from her love of teaching; she used to teach art in schools to K-5 grade and also taught dance classes. Here, participants can personalize their hats through painting or the ancient art of pyrography. Painting a hat takes a minimum of 1.5 hours while burning a hat takes at least 2.5 hours. The process is not just about customization; it’s an immersive experience where clients learn techniques while creating something uniquely theirs.
In her creations at Flame Kissed, Natascha strives to capture the Valley’s essence—a spirit of adventure intertwined with a deep reverence for nature and a vibrant, close-knit community. The pieces she crafts are more than mere accessories; they are reflections of a place that embodies tradition while embracing the modern world. “The harmony between the rustic elements in my pieces mirrors the unique blend of tradition and modernity that defines the Valley,” Natascha explains. Each
design evolves organically, inspired by the Valley’s landscapes and stories. From the intricate patterns etched in pyrography to the vibrant hues of hand-painted designs, every piece resonates with authenticity and charm.
Material selection is equally deliberate, with choosing each component for its texture, durability, and aesthetic appeal. “I want my pieces to feel alive, to tell a story,” she emphasizes. Whether incorporating abalone shells that reflect the Valley’s coastal influence or leather that speaks to its ranching heritage, every material is chosen to enhance the narrative woven into each creation. As the design takes shape, Natascha navigates between tradition and innovation, blending time-honored craftsmanship with contemporary techniques. “There’s a dance between preserving heritage and embracing new possibilities,” she reflects. Each adjustment and refinement in the creative process is a dialogue—a conversation between past and present, tradition and innovation.
Ultimately, her creative process transcends the Santa Ynez Valley’s enduring spirit. Through Flame Kissed, she invites others to embrace not just her artistry but also the narrative woven into each stitch and burn mark—a tribute to the beauty of heritage, nature, and community that defines both her work and the place we call home.
