“Wanda Jackson’s Wedding Day”
“People don’t have to know me, as long as they know my writing.” ~BT
Bernie Taupin, as described by Elton John, is a lyricist, cohort, best friend, and brother. Bernie keeps his description of himself simple: a storyteller. Born in the UK’s northern countryside, Bernie grew up reading stories that inspired him to write stories. He followed his passion, and it led to a big life in rock and roll.
Bernie Taupin is one of the most awarded and admired songwriters of all time. You know his lyrics by heart: “Blue Jean Baby,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocketman,” “Candle in the Wind,” and “Bennie and The Jets,” are just a handful. Everyone has a favorite. Bernie has carved his own path artistically and has championed songwriting as an independent art form.
His creative partnership with Elton John dates back to 1967, when they found each other after Elton replied to a newspaper ad from Liberty Records seeking musicians and writers.
Elton got an appointment for an audition, and, admitting he wasn’t a great writer, Ray Williams handed him an envelope containing Bernie’s poems. He read them on the train ride home, and once he got home to his piano, he immediately started composing melodies to accompany Bernie’s words. This random pairing established the two teenagers’ friendship and the creative relationship that exists to this day: Bernie writes the lyrics, and Elton writes the melodies. Atypically, words first, music second proved to be the winning formula for the legendary duo.
Bernie says a “higher power” brought them together at 17. In various interviews and award acceptance speeches, Elton regards him as “the constant” in his life, describing their relationship as “closer than they were when they started.” Shared successes and shared mistakes, these men have an unbreakable bond. Kindred spirits, you could say.

“Charley, on the other hand, has made it clear that she’d like a print of Timeless Flight, one of the “Rocket Man” lyrics from the Reflections series.”
“Being complete opposites is the key to our longevity,” says Bernie. “If we were two peas in the same pod, we would have soured on each other long ago.”
Bernie and Elton have lived adjacent lives but rarely argue despite their different opinions and lifestyles. If you’ve watched Rocketman or read Bernie’s memoir Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton, and Me , you’ll learn the men weathered many storms together, not against each other. Now, both in their seventies, they are in joyful phases, enjoying their families, careers, and still, each other.
A vocalist as well, Bernie released albums as a solo artist and as the lead singer in an Americana band, Farm Dogs. A full-length documentary about his life behind the lyrics is currently in the editing phase. There are numerous awards, and recently, a compilation of unparalleled lifetime achievements.
In 2020, Bernie and Elton won an Oscar for the Rocketman song “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again.” Bernie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023. At his acceptance speech for the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize in 2024, he shared his deep appreciation for America, his land of creative freedom. He praised his American wife, Heather, with whom he has two daughters. He stated, “I am America.”
When he’s not collaborating with Elton and fellow artists, he listens to jazz and country, creates visual art, and spends time cooking for family in his Solvang home. A longtime Californian,

“Every US flag has a story to tell, and its history, especially in its most distressed form, speaks volumes when interspersed among other elements. I have tremendous respect for it.”
Bernie misses the state’s simpler, sunnier attitude, but he admits it
“still has the traits I was drawn to as an impressionable twentyyear-old. Even with all of my ‘If onlys,’ I don’t think there is anywhere else I’d rather live.”
“He writes when he feels as he feels,” says a grainy 1970s documentary about Bernie in the English countryside, with long, feathered hair and a typewriter. When asked if his process is similar for creating art, Bernie says, “They both come from the same place, the imagination. One just happens to be sonic, the other visual.”
Bernie has painted since the ‘90s. Influenced by Abstract Expressionists like Hans Hoffman and Anselm Kiefer, his work evolved into sculptural construction using reclaimed materials.
“People donate odd things. I’ve torn material off old buildings and found things on the side of the road,” he explains. “I’ve located strange ephemera on eBay and ordered cases of Heinz baked beans on Amazon.”
Bernie has three art collections he describes as “the visual extension of what I have spent my life creating through words.” Reflections celebrates his 50-plus-year relationship with Elton John; archival pigment prints with familiar lyrics and pop art colors. Music Archaeology features paint-splattered guitars, lyrical tributes, and American flags. And his most recent collection, 2 Sides of The ‘60s , is a collaboration with his late friend, renowned photographer Terry O’Neill, where the works highlights pop culture icons.
You’ll notice the American flag often in Bernie’s art. “It’s the most iconic and displayed flag in the world,” he says. “Every US flag has a story to tell, and its history, especially in its most distressed form, speaks volumes when interspersed among other elements. I have tremendous respect for it. It’s almost become a motif for my creations.”
On our cover, he’s sitting underneath “Sleeping Beauty” on a wall in his home. It can be interpreted freely. “Self-observation is one of the most interesting aspects of contemporary art,” says Bernie. “Drawing your

own conclusions as to what a piece represents in your imagination. ‘Sleeping Beauty’ can be and has been interpreted in many different ways, positively and negatively. For me, it represents resilience against adversity.”
While currently on an art hiatus, Bernie always has something creative cooking. He advocates for animal rights, AI regulation, and the Florida Gators, showing his zeal for humanity.
When asked if his daughters, Charley and Georgey, enjoy writing, he explains that they both excel academically in the subject, but they’re pursuing physical talents. His eldest daughter, Charley, is a member of the Texas A&M rodeo team, and his younger daughter, Georgey, was the 2024 Spirit of Fiesta (and our August 2024 cover star).
“Both their lives are a story, and every day that I see their faces, hear their voices, and witness their achievements makes me proud,” Bernie says. “Hopefully, they instinctively draw inspiration from me when needed. They know where the wellspring is.”
WEGROW. WEGIVE
It started with a sign asking a question that changed the trajectory of Summerland and its food crisis:
“Do you know children or a family that needs food?”
Leslie Person Ryan is not the type to sit around and watch destruction happen. In fact, when I met her for a tour of Sweet Wheel Farms, she rarely stopped working—picking up plastic, tending to the vegetables, or petting Gracie, the farm’s cat—all while educating me about the fresh, chemical-free, regenerative, and sustainable farm she owns just miles from the beach.
.
A farmer by birth, Ryan wasn’t thinking much about irrigation systems and non-GMO wheat during the devastating 2018 debris flow. Everything changed when she spoke to a mother who’d fought for the last stale sandwich available in Summerland’s lone liquor store. For ten days, the community was closed off from goods; without a grocery store or convenience market, landlocked residents had little means to eat.
Sweet Wheel Farms delivers organic food to those in need

As a result, Sweet Wheel Farm Stand was born, offering organic produce, farm products, and homemade baked goods seven days a week. In its first year in business, more than 1,800 meals were given to local veterans, and fresh produce was donated to locals in need. So Leslie put up a sign asking neighbors if there was a need for food.
The response was overwhelming. Almost immediately, dozens of local families signed up for the Sweet Wheel Farms community farm box. “What I’ve learned is that people walking by, young to old, learn that we’re giving away food and want to help,” says Lisa Mabie, Operations Coordinator.
Eventually, the food program grew too big for just a farm stand. “I realized we weren’t just Sweet Wheel Farms, a cute farm cart,” Ryan says. “My goal was to solve food security and teach people how you can be organic, and have higher aspirations.” So the organization shifted away from the name inspired by the e-bike it had been powered by to Santa Barbara Agriculture and Farm Education Foundation (SBAFE). “Step by step, we’re growing into that name,” Ryan says.
Obtaining non-profit status served as the guiding path toward securing the 7-acre plot they now own in Summerland, which complements their land in Orcutt.
The Food Fragile project is one arm of the nonprofit which provides chemical, herbicide, and pesticide-free food. But it’s also the most time-intensive. Volunteers deliver boxes of food every week and also work on the farm in Summerland that overlooks the ocean.
They have dozens of families signed up for the Food Fragile Program. “The fruits and vegetables [from Sweet Wheel Farms] have enhanced my health,” says Food Fragile recipient Teketa Bellamy. “I have more options to blend, juice, and heal myself. I really appreciate them for supporting and nourishing me with organic food that’s safe to eat.”
A working farm never sleeps and Ryan doesn’t either. “We are always doing something unusual and experimental,” she adds, mentioning partnerships with CATE, Laguna Blanca, and UCSB. Everything from cooking up tortilla chips to lobbying to reforming Santa Barbara County’s bee restrictions, the SBAFE Foundation is involved.
With hope for new irrigation systems, a tractor, and more chickens, the SBAFE will continue developing programs to keep the community healthy and fed. “We need people to help us,” adds Ryan. “Sometimes we’re so busy farming it’s hard to ask everyone for money.”

EXPLORE: THE CULTURED ABALONE FARM
Sustainably hand-raising and preserving live seafood products along the coast
You may have already eaten some bounty from our nearby seafood farm, and not know it. Sitting on the historic Rancho Dos Pueblos along the Gaviota coast, this farm supplies local chefs and purveyors far and near—Massimo Falsini at Carusos and Santa Barbara Fish Market’s Goleta location, to name a couple. From walking tours to cooking instructions and abalone conservation, The Cultured Abalone should be on your day trip bucket list.
Saturday walking tours require reservations, and private tours are also available. “Tours are 1.5
hours and packed with information,” says Tours Coordinator Andie Van Horn. The farm grows abalone, red seaweed, and ranch urchins.
“Our standard size abalone are about 1/4 of a pound and take 3-4 years to reach this size,” explains Andie. There is a lot of care that goes into those years: daily incubator changes for their first week, feeding microalgae for their first 3-6 months, moving them outside, and then continuing to feed them seaweed for the next 2.53.5 years. The tanks are fed with cool, clean water from 40 feet below the Santa Barbara Channel.

They spawn the abalone year-round and the farm is most populated in the winter, though you can visit any time of year, and there’s lots to see.
In addition to growing red abalone, the farm collaborates with UC Davis’s Bodega Marine Lab, The Bay Foundation, and Get Inspired to restore white, green, and red abalone on the California coast (three of California’s seven species). Their partnership with local commercial urchin divers aids in managing the purple urchin population while cultivating the delicacy. Starving purple urchins are collected from the wild and fattened in tanks at the farm. Their urchin ranching project was featured in the PBS docuseries, Hope in the Water. Since the farm’s inception in 1989, it has been dedicated to stewardship and sustainable farming practices, earning it the coveted green rating from Seafood Watch.
On tours, people often ask how to prepare their live seafood best. “I always recommend mermaid style. It’s an easy way to cook ‘em up quick,” says Andie. “Many people also pan-fry or poach them.” Visit their website, where they have a growing recipe library—and we have one for you here. You can pre-order on their website and pick up after a tour or during Saturday shop hours to continue your aquaculture adventure at home.
“Our abalone are sold live and whole, so you do all the processing at home,” says Andie. “If you’re uncomfortable preparing a live
animal, I recommend putting them in the freezer for 20 minutes prior to preparation so they become less mobile. While preparing a live seafood product is new for some, it’s the best way to get fresh seafood!”
Open to the public on Saturdays only. Tour reservations required. Saturday Farm Shop hours: 12-2 pm. culturedabalone.com
MERMAID-STYLE GINGER SOY ABALONE
Recipe by The Cultured Abalone Farm’s general manager, Devin Spencer. Serves 2 as a main or up to 6 as an appetizer.
This easy grilled abalone is prepared in a delicate Japanese marinade. Enjoy with a side of fluffy white rice and veggies of your choice, or serve alone as an appetizer. Just make sure you eat them right off the grill!
Ingredients:
• 6 standard abalone
• 3 tbsp soy sauce
• 3 tbsp mirin
• 1 tbsp rice vinegar
• 1 tsp sugar
• ½ tsp sesame oil
• 1 tbsp water
• 1 tbsp green onion
• ½ inch of ginger, grated
• ½ teaspoon white sesame seeds
Directions:
1. Get your grill smoking hot. This can be done on a gas grill, but charcoal works best. Once your grill is around 600-700 degrees F, it’s ready to go.
2. Whisk all ingredients (excluding abalone) together until sugar has dissolved to form the marinade.
3. Clean the abalone under running water or with a paper towel to remove any grime. Do not remove the abalone from the shell.
4. Place the cleaned abalone shell side down on the grill. Carefully divide about ½ of the marinade across all the abalone. This acts as a poaching liquid, bubbling around the abalone. Reserve ½ of marinade for serving. After 4 minutes, flip the abalone meat side down and cook for 2 minutes more until there are grill marks. Remove from heat.
5. Using a metal spoon, scoop the entire abalone away from the shell. Remove the guts and mouth by pulling them away from the meat using a fork or knife. Slice the abalone thinly, replace the meat back in the shell for presentation, and pour the reserved marinade over the finished abalone.

SANTA BARBARA > SLO
A mother-daughter trip on Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner
ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The author’s daughter
Summer is the ideal season to explore Santa Barbara’s neighboring towns, and Amtrak makes a fun and memorable trip with your family easy.
My daughter and I did just that affordably and comfortably as we boarded the Pacific Surfliner train at Amtrak’s State Street station in Santa Barbara for a 2-hour journey up the coast to San Luis Obispo.
The Pacific Surfliner travels over 300 miles from San Diego to SLO, stopping at 29 locations in between. Once aboard, we relaxed in our roomy, reclining seats complete with table trays and footrests on the double-decker train, gazing through panoramic windows at the scenic coastline views as we headed north.
Business class tickets include fresh coffee, pastries, a drink (including wine), and snacks. Visit the onboard café for drinks, sandwiches, and snacks—try the charcuterie pack of cheeses, crackers, fruit, and nuts.
As I traveled without having to pay attention to the road, I enjoyed views you can only see from the train, like animal sightings, including dolphins, seals, egrets, pelicans, and deer. Before we knew it, we had arrived.
EXPLORE SLO
A college town chock-full of history, San Luis Obispo is a lively place to explore. During our stay, our home was the Granada Hotel & Bistro, built in 1922 and still preserving its original elegance, modern amenities, and five-star service.
The boutique hotel’s 17 guest rooms feature plush beds, gas fireplaces, and big-screen TVs, along with stylish touches like exposed brick walls, handcrafted steel windows, Persian rugs, and original hardwood floors.
Guests can borrow bikes and helmets to ride around town. A leisurely stroll from the hotel leads to downtown shops, restaurants, bars, and museums. For lunch, we discovered Novo Restaurant and Lounge, a cute café with a rustic outdoor patio overlooking the San Luis Creek. After feasting on the best salmon bisque, a delicious Caesar salad (with real anchovies), and a couple hard ciders, we kept walking to see the sights and burn some calories.
Wandering the city offers hours of joy and interesting finds. Some favorite stops include HumanKind Fair Trade, Made in SLO, Ah Louis Store, and Louisa’s Place all-day breakfast.
Crossing the picturesque wooden bridge spanning the creek below, we followed the meandering pathway bordering the gently flowing stream, where Steelhead trout return to spawn every year. We admired the eclectic sculptures dotting the creekside path as we walked up the steps to the impressive San Luis Obispo Mission. The mission was built by Spanish explorers in 1772 and serves as a SLO icon.
Steps away, we found the SLO Museum of Art, next door to the Children’s Museum, where kids love exploring imaginative hands-on exhibits. You’ll want to look at but not touch the infamous Bubblegum Alley, where colorful globs of chewing gum stick to the walls of a narrow corridor along one of SLO’s main hubs.
Back at the hotel, we had dinner at the Bistro. Beef bourguignon, wild scallops, and crispy Brussels sprouts paired with a glass of house-recommended Heritage du Pic Saint Loup red wine.
We’ll be back for hot springs, award-winning wineries, and beautiful beaches on our next SLO adventure.
