Community is Our Love Language

As February sweeps in along the shores of Sandusky Bay with its chilly winds and that promise of warmer days ahead, it’s got me thinking about love in all its forms. Sure, the cards and chocolates are fun (and who doesn’t love a good excuse for dessert?), but around here, our real love language is community. And honestly, that’s the kind that sticks with you long after the flowers fade.

Community is our love language and I say that with a big smile because it’s so true! It shows up in those everyday choices: popping into our favorite local shop for that warm “hey, it’s so great to see you”, grabbing coffee brewed just right by someone who knows your order, or carving out time in our busy lives to support the places and people who make this town shine.

We Love local as our local businesses are the heartbeat of it all keeping neighborhoods buzzing, our economy humming, and giving Sandusky Bay its unique spark. From classic spots we’ve loved forever to bold new ones shaking things up, these owners bring grit, big ideas, and tons of heart. Cheering them on isn’t just a seasonal thing, it’s how we say “I’ve got your back” all year round.

February also brings that cozy, personal romance: lingering date nights at our independent restaurants (kid-free if we’re lucky!), deep chats over local coffee, or bundled-up walks down streets filled with our favorite memories. There’s real magic in falling in love with your hometown, over and over again.

Thank you for jumping in with us, for laughing, showing up, and speaking this love language every day. Community is at the core of our love language, and together we’re keeping it alive, raising great kids, and building the best kind of extended family.

With big love,

Age Doesn’t Matter: Income Determines Tax Filing Requirements

Did you know that the individual income tax system is based on income, not age. You could be in your first year of life, or 100, and still be required to file a tax return. You may also be required to file an income tax return when there is no tax due. To know if you or your family members are required to file an individual tax return, please reach out to your CPA.

During the colder months, homes see more activity and that means more wear on floors and window coverings. At S&H Blinds and Floors, durability matters just as much as design. Scratch-resistant flooring stands up to daily foot traffic, while easy-to-clean surfaces make maintenance simple. Moisture-resistant options are ideal for snowy boots and pet paws. These are products designed for real life, delivering long-lasting performance without sacrificing quality.

Trust, Betrayal, and the High Price of a Sweetheart Scam

Sweetheart scams begin with trust and end in betrayal, causing devastating financial loss. Elders are especially vulnerable because they hold significant savings, didn’t grow up with modern technology, and may be experiencing loneliness or isolation. Scammers exploit these gaps to drain retirement accounts and lifelong savings. Working closely with trusted bankers, financial advisors, attorneys, and CPAs creates critical safeguards, helping spot red flags early and protecting both finances and dignity before damage becomes irreversible.

The Average Age of Today’s First-Time Home Buyer is 40

The average age of today’s first-time homebuyer has risen to 40 years old, a shift with real financial consequences. Delaying homeownership often means missing years of equity growth, long-term appreciation, and stable housing costs. Contributing factors include rising rents, student debt, and affordability challenges. Mortgage education plays a critical role in helping younger buyers understand their options sooner, empowering them to build wealth earlier and achieve greater financial security over time.

Watching Lake Erie

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SHORES & ISLANDS WEBCAM NETWORK

For anyone who loves Lake Erie, the Shores & Islands webcam network has become a unique digital gateway into life along the lake. Spanning locations throughout Erie and Ottawa counties, these cameras offer real-time views of harbors, lighthouses and beaches. They’ve evolved into not only a tourism tool, but also a daily ritual for locals who enjoy tuning in for life on the lake.

The webcam network began taking shape in the mid2010s, when Shores & Islands Ohio, along with several community partners, saw an opportunity to highlight the natural beauty and activity of the region in a new, accessible way. What started as a handful of cameras strategically placed along the lake slowly grew into a coordinated collection of live feeds. Over the years, additional cameras were added at popular sites, while others were upgraded to deliver sharper images and better weather visibility. Today, the network has become a staple of the region’s digital presence, shared by locals, tourism partners, and lake enthusiasts from across the country.

WHERE THE CAMERAS ARE— AND WHAT THEY SHOW

Across both counties, the camera locations capture some of the most iconic and scenic spots along the lake. In Ottawa County, viewers can tune into Marblehead Lighthouse, one of the most photographed landmarks in Ohio. Other cameras

highlight the Lakeside Dock, offering realtime glimpses of ferry activity, sailboats, and the peaceful rhythm of life along the peninsula. Meanwhile, underwater cameras provide a completely different perspective, allowing viewers to observe fish and aquatic life just below the surface.

On Lake Erie’s islands, the Put-in-Bay webcams have become especially popular. Multiple angles capture downtown activity, the harbor, Perry’s Monument, and even distant views of Middle Bass Island. For those who enjoy their trips to the islands, the webcams offer a way to experience Put-in-Bay even in the quiet winter months.

HOW TO ACCESS THE WEBCAMS

Accessing the webcams is simple and free. Shores & Islands hosts a dedicated “Webcams” page on its website, where many of the streams are gathered in one convenient place. Visitors can click through each camera to see what’s happening in real time. Island-specific cameras, like those on Put-in-Bay, are also available on tourism and community websites, featuring clear descriptions of what each location shows. Municipal park cameras can be found through local government or park district sites, making it easy to explore the lake from multiple viewpoints.

Most of the feeds are mobile-friendly, allowing users to check on lake conditions or island activity from anywhere. They are also commonly shared on social media, giving the community an easy way to stay connected.

Beyond beautiful views, these webcams serve several practical purposes as boaters use them to check water conditions, families watch landmarks they love, and residents enjoy seasonal changes that connect them to home. Long-term time-lapse collections also highlight natural shoreline shifts, sunset patterns, and the ebb and flow of activity throughout the year.

Whether you’re planning your next lake adventure or simply craving a moment of peace, the Shores & Islands webcam network offers a window into the steady heartbeat of Lake Erie’s shoreline anytime, anywhere.

“Beyond beautiful views, these webcams serve several practical purposes: boaters use them to check water conditions, families watch landmarks their kids love, and residents enjoy seasonal changes that connect them.”

ANOTHER REASON WHY CHOOSING THE BOTSON’S AGENCIES MATTERS

BY

In an age where many companies outsource services, automate communications, or treat clients like numbers, there’s something quietly powerful about doing business with someone who knows you personally. That’s exactly the kind of relationship you get when you choose Kym Botson. As owner of The Botson Agencies, Kym has built more than an insurance business, she’s built a community grounded in trust, care, and hometown values.

Photographed at Work Space, designed by MW Design Studio

For 20 years, Kym has been serving Marblehead and surrounding communities with steady dedication and heart.  What began as a career in life and retirement services, evolved into full-service, boutique-style agencies.  Under the umbrella of Allstate, Kym has expanded  her experience in financial services to the property and casualty arena focusing on auto, home and recreational coverages.

Rather than cold call centers or impersonal apps, Kym insists on real communication. She and her husband, Chris, remain hands-on. They are in the offices daily responding to questions, guiding clients through claims, & adjusting policies as life changes. “Our commitment to our customers extends past the coverage review, we are emotionally invested in each family” Kym reflects, and that philosophy shines through in every interaction. This approach takes time, empathy, and a real commitment, the kind of old-school, people-centered service that’s increasingly rare.

In a feature titled “Celebrating Women in Business,” Kym’s journey is painted as more than business, it’s a mission. She saw a need in her community: people who deserved knowledgeable guidance, clear communication, and genuine concern for their well-being. That mission fueled the growth of her agencies across Ottawa, Sandusky and surrounding counties.

Today’s world is fast-paced and insurance can feel complex, confusing and even impersonal. Kym believes that protection should start with people. She emphasizes clarity, education, and building relationships. Clients get more than a policy, they get guidance, support, and a trusted partner as their life

evolves. If you’re looking for an insurance agent who values more than profits, if you want someone who treats you like family, take the time to meet with Kym. You’ll find more than just coverage, you’ll find a partner who truly cares about you, your family, and your community. And in doing so, you’re not just protecting what matters; you’re supporting local business ownership, personal service, and the values that make Marblehead, and surrounding towns, a place worth calling home.

That same commitment to people and place became especially meaningful when Kym relocated her office from the bustling intersection of Catawba (Rte 53 & Rte 163) to Marblehead. Only 2 miles down the road from her former office, she noticed that the area felt less visible to those unfamiliar with the peninsula. Through conversations with neighboring business owners, she learned this feeling was shared, not as a complaint, but as an opportunity to better connect the area and highlight what already existed. These conversations sparked the idea for what is now becoming known as The Harbor District designation initiative.

A Fresh Perspective for the Marblehead Peninsula

In a region defined by shoreline charm, historic cottages and small-town warmth, a unified project is quietly reshaping how residents, business owners, and visitors experience Danbury Township and the Marblehead peninsula. The effort to designate our distinctive corridor as “The Harbor District” is under way. (Extending Rte. 269 North and East along Ohio State Route 163 Rte. from Lightner Rd. in Danbury Township)

At the heart of The Harbor District initiative is the belief that identity matters and that when an area is named, recognized, and thoughtfully presented, it begins to thrive in new ways. For years, the cluster of locally owned businesses along the harbor has existed side by side, without a shared identity to visually connect them or signal their collective presence. The Harbor District vision was born from a practical need for visibility. Many of these businesses sit in close proximity, but without clear directional cues or a unifying name, they were often overlooked by those unfamiliar with the area. Giving this stretch of Marblehead a name and a consistent visual language, will help guide people naturally through the district, encouraging exploration and discovery while supporting foot traffic and local commerce.

For longtime locals like Kym Botson, Agent Owner of The Botson Agencies, this new marketing initiative is symbolic of a broader commitment to support local commerce and strengthen community identity. More than wayfinding, the designation of “The Harbor District” will establish identity. We want to emphasize the area as welcoming and worth stopping for. The intent is to place these businesses firmly on the map as the area deserves to be celebrated as a destination, not just a pass-through.

This project reflects a larger commitment to community-first growth. One that honors local character, strengthens relationships, and ensures that “The Harbor District”, as with the rest of the Marblehead peninsula, remain a place where real people fuel the relationships, not AI & algorithms.

Power 4 Pink

A Local Force Supporting Breast Cancer Survivors

For more than a decade, Power 4 Pink has been making a powerful difference in the lives of women fighting breast cancer.

Founded in 2009 by Marcy L. Calvert, a Vermilion local, veteran, and registered nurse with more than 40 years of healthcare experience, the organization was born from a personal journey that transformed into a community mission.

Marcy’s own battle with breast cancer inspired her to create something that would ensure no one had to face the disease alone or without support. Her vision was simple yet profound: form a bridge between individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and the healthcare resources they needed to live a healthy, fulfilling life. Today, Power 4 Pink remains dedicated to that mission through direct assistance, education, outreach, and fundraising.

A Mission Rooted in Personal Experience

A career nurse and active community member of Vermilion, Marcy used her extensive medical background and deep empathy to shape Power 4 Pink into more than a typical charity. She understood

the emotional, physical, and financial toll a breast cancer diagnosis can take. With her decades of nursing experience, she recognized that clinical care is only one part of the journey as support, education, emotional encouragement, and financial navigation are equally vital.

From the start, the organization has worked to ensure local residents receive necessary testing, care, resources, and connections to healthcare professionals to pursue early detection, proper treatment, and survivorship support.

What Power 4 Pink Does

Power 4 Pink operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, functioning without a permanent office but with a strong volunteer board and community network to carry out its goals. Funds raised through events, donations, and community partnerships are allocated to assist those actively undergoing breast cancer treatment who may lack sufficient insurance or financial resources.

The organization provides:

• Financial assistance to help cover treatment costs, co-pays, prescriptions,

prosthetics, compression garments, transportation expenses, and other cancer-related needs.

• Survivor support bags full of comfort and educational materials to uplift individuals newly diagnosed or entering treatment.

• Outreach, education, and advocacy to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and ongoing care.

Community Impact and Outreach

Since 2013, Power 4 Pink has directly helped 484 patients fight breast cancer, a testament to its sustained impact in the community. Over the years, the organization has raised a total of $242,208.14 to fund these efforts and expand its outreach. These numbers reflect more than statistics; they represent individual stories of relief, resilience, and hope. Because funds are limited and carefully reviewed by the Board of Directors, assistance is prioritized for residents who are actively in treatment and whose household income falls below defined levels. This thoughtful approach ensures that help reaches those who need it most.

Event Spotlight:

One key annual fundraiser for Power 4 Pink is the “Night at the Races” event, scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. in Oberlin. The event features dinner, racing entertainment, and a cash raffle. Tickets are limited, and proceeds go directly toward financial assistance and survivor resources, strengthening the organization’s ability to lift up those in need.

Continuing the Legacy

Power 4 Pink’s work is sustained by volunteers, donors, local businesses, and individuals who share its vision of compassionate care. As Marcy often reminds supporters, “Your fight is our fight.” This principle rooted in personal story, professional expertise, and community spirit continues to fuel the organization’s efforts to transform the breast cancer journey locally.

The Heart of Our Business

THE CLIENT

At Linda Armstrong & The A Team, the heart of the business has always been, and will always be, the client. For nearly four decades, Linda Armstrong and her dedicated team at RE/MAX Quality Realty have helped families and individuals throughout Erie County and the surrounding areas find not just houses, but places to truly call home. Every step of the way, it is the people they serve who inspire their work, fuel their passion, and define their success.

Linda began her journey in real estate in 1986, and from the very beginning, she approached her work with a clear vision: to provide clients with trusted guidance, deep market expertise, and unwavering support through one of life’s most important decisions. Over the years, that vision has grown into a carefully built team of professionals who share the same client-first mindset. Today, Linda Armstrong & The A Team is more than a successful real estate group as they are advisors, problem-solvers, and advocates who work together seamlessly on behalf of every client.

While Linda’s leadership and experience anchor the business, The A Team’s strength lies in its people. Licensed Realtors Katey Eirons and Gwen Kelley, both with RE/MAX Quality Realty, work closely with buyers and sellers to understand their goals and guide them through the market with clarity and care. Their local knowledge, attention to detail, and commitment to client success ensure every transaction is handled thoughtfully and professionally.

Supporting the team’s agents is Rossy Binette, The A Team’s Marketing and Listing Coordinator, who manages marketing strategy, listing preparation, and behind-the-scenes coordination. Her role is essential in keeping transactions organized, timelines on track, and properties presented at their very best. Together, the team functions as a well-orchestrated unit, ensuring nothing is overlooked and no client ever feels like just another transaction.

The team’s dedication and experience have earned them a long list of accolades. Linda has been recognized as a top producer since 1992 and was honored as “Realtor of the Year” in 1996. In 2000, she received the prestigious “Woman of the Year” award from the Erie County Chamber, a recognition that reflects not only her professional excellence, but her leadership and impact within the community. Year after year, she has also received awards from the Ohio Association of Realtors, including consistent recognition in the President’s Sales Club. Most recently, Linda was honored with a RE/MAX  Circle of Legends Lifetime Award,  a career-long recognition for high achievement and service. This award speaks to her continued commitment to excellence and her lasting influence in the real estate industry.

But success isn’t measured solely by awards or sales figures. It’s measured by relationships. Clients often describe The A Team as patient, responsive, knowledgeable, and genuinely caring. Whether it’s a first-time homebuyer navigating unfamiliar territory, a family searching for their dream lakefront property, or a retiree preparing for their next chapter, every client receives the same level of attention, respect, and care. The team listens carefully, offers honest advice, and ensures every decision is well-informed.

Linda’s approach to business and life is also deeply shaped by her faith. Her church and faith-based values play an important role in who she is, guiding her leadership, integrity, and commitment to serving others. This foundation influences how she treats clients, leads her team, and gives back to the community with compassion, humility, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

The A Team’s approach is thoughtful and personalized. From the first consultation to closing day, each member contributes their expertise to create a smooth, well-supported experience. They combine

local market insight with the powerful marketing resources of RE/MAX to give sellers maximum exposure while helping buyers find properties that truly fit their lifestyle and budget. Clear communication, consistent follow-through, and teamwork are at the core of every transaction.

Beyond real estate, Linda and her team are deeply rooted in the Erie County community. Their work supports local neighborhoods, strengthens the local economy, and builds long-standing relationships that often last far beyond a single sale. Many clients return for future transactions or refer friends and family which is a true testament to the trust the team has earned over the decades.

At the heart of it all is a simple truth, the client is the reason they do what they do. Goals, dreams, and trust guide every strategy and every decision. It’s this people-first philosophy, supported by a strong, collaborative team and a foundation of faith and service, that sets Linda Armstrong & The A Team apart as both top producers and a trusted cornerstone of the local real estate community.

As they look ahead to the future, one thing remains unchanged, the heart of their business will always be the people they serve. Because true success isn’t just measured in properties sold, but in relationships built, lives touched, and communities strengthened. This is where Linda Armstrong & The A Team continue to thrive.

As they look ahead to the future, one thing remains unchanged, the heart of their business will always be the people they serve. Because true success isn’t just measured in properties sold, but in relationships, lives touched, and communities strengthened.

THROUGH HER LENS

Every Love Story is Seen

Pam Johnston is an extraordinary photographer whose work is grounded in one simple yet powerful belief: every love story deserves to be seen, felt, and remembered. Through her lens, brief moments become lasting memories, captured with honesty, warmth, and

heartfelt intention. Pam doesn’t simply take photographs, she tells stories. From quiet glances and spontaneous laughter to the deep, unspoken connections between people, her images reflect love in its most genuine form.

With more than 15 years behind the camera, Pam has developed a deeply personal approach that makes people feel at ease, allowing them to show up as their truest selves. Whether photographing a wedding, engagement, senior portrait, or family session, she creates an environment rooted in trust and comfort. Her relaxed style allows clients to forget about posing and focus instead on what truly matters, connection. The result is imagery that feels natural, emotional, and beautifully lived in rather than staged. In every session, Pam’s goal is to provide not only a beautiful collection of images, but also an exceptional and memorable experience.

Pam Johnston’s passion for love stories is deeply personal and it shows in every image she captures. Her own love story with her husband, Ted, is woven

into the heart of her work. Not only is he her partner in life, but he works alongside her on all family and multigenerational sessions, helping capture moments as they unfold. Together they form a seamless team, offering clients both beautifully posed images and candid, in-between moments that give each gallery a rich, complete perspective. Ted’s presence brings an added layer of warmth, patience, and ease to every session as he often works quietly, watching moments unfold in real time. His natural ability to connect with people of all ages combined with Pam’s creativity and photography knowledge, enhances the experience for clients, making each session feel collaborative and comfortable from start to finish. It is also within these moments the pair truly shine, offering reassurance, humor, and a steady presence that helps everyone feel at home in front of the camera. These sessions allow them to preserve the bonds between grandparents, parents, and children in a way that is both authentic and deeply emotional.  CONTINUED >

“From quiet glances and spontaneous laughter to unspoken connections between people, her images reflect love in its most genuine form.”

Pam has a remarkable gift for noticing the in-between moments, the soft squeeze of a hand, a knowing smile exchanged when no one else is watching, or the joyful tears that surface during meaningful experiences. These moments often last only seconds, but her ability to preserve them allows families and couples to relive how it felt to be there long after the day has passed. Pam’s images don’t just show what a moment looked like, they help clients remember how it felt to be there. We’ve all heard the saying, a photo is worth a thousand words, but her work proves that some images can tell an entire story without saying a single one. Beyond technical skill and artistic

vision, Pam brings genuine care to every client relationship, taking time to understand each couple or family, including their journey, their values, and what matters most to them. This thoughtful approach ensures her photographs are a true reflection of her clients. Through Pam Johnston Photography, she offers more than images, she offers the priceless gift of preserving love stories for generations to come.

Pam Johnston Photography serves the North Coast of Ohio and beyond, specializing in weddings, couples, and multigenerational family sessions, documenting love stories across every season of life. Check her full portfolio at pamjohnstonphotography.com.

Building the Perfect Bouquet

Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many ways. Some people choose to go out for dinner and a movie, others hire a private chef for a romantic meal at home, some buy chocolates and find a fun activity in town, and some couples go out of town for an exciting getaway! One Valentine’s Day staple is giving a bouquet of flowers to someone special. Flowers are the gift that say I love you and can be given to your spouse, children, and mom. As a child, my father always got me roses on Valentine’s Day until I met my husband and he took over the tradition. A bouquet of flowers can say many things as each flower has a different meaning. If you’re wanting to say something special to the ones you love this Valentine’s Day, take a look at our list of three popular flowers, what they mean, and what flowers to pair them with.

USE THIS GUIDE WHEN ORDERING VALENTINE’S DAY BOUQUETS

Roses

LOVE & ROMANCE

Roses are by far the most popular flower to give on Valentine’s Day. They are beautiful by themselves or you can add Baby’s Breath to enhance the bouquet. These two make a romantic bouquet and are the perfect flowers to give to someone special.

Lilies

PURITY & FERTILITY

Lilies come in a variety of colors and are eye-catching! For a softer looking bouquet, pair your lilies with carnations. These two combined are fun and heartwarming and are a great gift for anyone.

Tulips

PERFECT FOR DEEP LOVE

A bouquet of tulips will brighten any space! Adding some Ranunculus, also known as buttercup, will complement the tulips wonderfully. These flowers have a refreshing look that will decorate any home beautifully in a crystal vase.
