Local and Loved

February is such a fun and meaningful time of year in Houston. With rodeo season just around the corner and Valentine’s Day in the air, there’s an energy that feels both festive and deeply rooted in community. While River Oaks Lifestyle is always about celebrating what’s local, our Love Local issue gives us a special opportunity to lean even further into what makes this city so exceptional.

As a native Houstonian, one of my favorite parts of being the owner and publisher of River Oaks Lifestyle is getting a front-row seat to the creativity, innovation, and heart that define our city. I never tire of learning about the businesses being built and the passion that fuels so many local entrepreneurs. In this issue, you’ll find several of those stories highlighted, and I hope you enjoy discovering them as much as we did.

You’ll also find a beautiful feature on Houston Ballet principal ballerina Karina González, who shares her journey of artistry, discipline, and motherhood, including the joy of recently having her daughter on stage with her.

From cuisine and the arts to technology, leadership, and entrepreneurship, Houston continues to inspire. My mission with River Oaks Lifestyle has always been to support local businesses and the people behind them, those who pour their heart and soul into their work and share it with their fellow Houstonians. Supporting local means supporting dreams, families, and the vibrant character of our city.

Thank you for being part of our community. If you’re not already following along, I invite you to connect with us on Instagram and Facebook. We would also love to hear from you. You’re always welcome to email me at Suzanne.schakett@ citylifestyle.com to share what you love, what you’d like to see more of, or simply to say hello. And if you’re a local business owner interested in learning how we connect brands with the communities they serve, I can’t wait to connect.

With love,

February 2026

REAL AND Relaxed

LAUREN HASKETT MIXES A LITTLE ‘EDGY’ INTO CALIFORNIA CASUAL STYLE.

Lauren Haskett came to Houston nearly 20 years ago with a new college degree, a fiancé and a job she’d gotten while visiting a cousin.

A native of Fort Worth, she graduated from the University of Oklahoma and wanted to return to Texas. On a trip to Houston, she cold-called Kitchen and Bath Concepts, then owned by Peggy McGowen and now owned by her daughter, Micqui McGowen. They hired her immediately and that job set Haskett on her path.

In February, the Houston Design District will honor her as the newest inductee of Leaders In Design.

Located in the Houston Design Center, Kitchen and Bath Concepts works on high-end projects, sometimes as the design consultant directly with a homeowner and sometimes with an interior designer when a project is complicated and needs more attention to detail.

After 5 years with KBC, she launched her own firm, Lauren Haskett Design.

Influenced by shelter magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, Elle Décor and Metropolitan Home, Haskett leans toward the easy style we call “California casual.” She believes in using a mix of color and pattern with a few upscale and edgy things thrown in.

“I still love that aesthetic. My true style will always be rooted in that philosophy of chic, casual and colorful,” Haskett says.

These days, Haskett works with clients to provide longevity in homes, That means flex rooms that can be play spaces for younger children, but grow into something else when those kids are teenagers. For homeowners, having a bedroom and accessible bathroom on the first floor is key for aging in place.

Aside from that, an overall focus on wellness has her clients installing saunas and gyms in their homes.

“When I travel I like to find the chicest stores and galleries, and that can be on a family road trip or a vacation to London. I love going to art museums – that fills my cup,” Haskett says of her inspiration.

This living room is an eclectic mix of traditional, vintage and more contemporary pieces.

Paws Up Resort blends luxury accommodations, Montana landscapes, and unforgettable experiences for a one-of-a-kind romantic escape.

A

CELEBRITY LOVED MONTANA RANCH WHERE COUPLES ESCAPE INTO PRIVACY, ADVENTURE, AND INDULGENCE, FROM ADULTS-ONLY GREEN O STAYS TO OUTDOOR ADVENTURE, GLAMPING LUXURY, AND CHEF-DRIVEN

DINING.

Montana’s Paws Up Ranch has hosted Leonardo DiCaprio, Kevin Costner, Rihanna, Gwyneth Paltrow, and the Rolling Stones, but its appeal goes far beyond a guest list. Couples arrive for a one-of-a-kind reset that swaps busy schedules for relaxed time together. Romance here comes with space, privacy, and plenty of outdoor adventure.

Set on a 37,000-acre working cattle ranch about 35 miles from Missoula, Paws Up feels far away, but it is very accessible. Stays at the two Michelin Keys resort can include sharing a fly fishing lesson, time at the spa, or enjoying a meal by an award-winning chef. Nights are perfect for quiet conversations under the stars.

For couples, one of the newest attractions is Green O. This adultsonly enclave, nestled in a wooded corner of the property, is designed for privacy and tranquility. Green O guests also have access to The Social Haus, where menus, showcasing the bounty of Montana farmers, ranchers, and fishermen, change daily. With floor-to-ceiling windows, it is an excellent choice for late dinners and slow mornings.

Paws Up offers more ways to enjoy the outdoors than any resort in North America. Couples can ride horses at the state’s largest private equestrian center, which includes a 29,000 square foot arena. Join a cattle drive, float the Blackfoot River, try archery, hike, canoe, or book a hot air balloon ride. The winter season offers MoonBikes and dog sledding with Jessie Royer, a veteran of the Iditarod.

Accommodations range from Meadow Homes to Wilderness Estates, plus seasonal glamping sites along the river. Glamping at Paws Up is much more than a tent. The resort is the only property in North America with three-bedroom tents that are wellequipped, spacious, and thoughtfully furnished.

No resort is complete without a dedicated gift shop, and the Wilderness Outpost at Paws Up is not only massive but also fully stocked with elevated gear, Western apparel, jewelry, and even home decor. pawsup.com

Guests at The Green O enjoy a secluded, adults-only retreat with private access to The Social Haus.

WHAT DO YOU THINK SURPRISES FIRST-TIME CUSTOMERS ABOUT YOUR BRAND?

First-time customers are often surprised by the variety – from 14k yellow gold and diamonds to turquoise, oxidized silver, and polki diamonds, our selection is far more expansive than they expect. Even with such a wide selection, our small team curates every piece with intention, which creates an intimate, boutique feel. People immediately notice the personal connection we build with our clients. The experience is hands-on and rooted in genuine relationships.

ARE YOU EVOLVING YOUR BRAND’S EXPERIENCE THIS YEAR?

This year, we’re focused on connecting with more local businesses by hosting events and collaborations with Houstonbased brands. We’re also popping up outside the city and expanding our footprint beyond Houston, giving more shoppers a chance to experience the J. Landa world. It’s all about blending our local community roots with a broader reach.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING BASED IN HOUSTON?

Houston’s diversity is our greatest inspiration. Our customers like different things, styles, colors, and ways of expressing themselves, and that uniqueness is exactly what fuels our brand. Houstonians connect deeply with our emphasis on creating something personal and distinctive. The city’s art, culture, and food scenes constantly inspire us, and Jay’s involvement in local philanthropy, including Dress for Success and TUTS Houston, keeps us connected to the community in a meaningful way.

WHAT CAN SHOPPERS EXPECT FROM YOUR BRAND THIS YEAR?

This year, we’re focusing on making the South to North experience feel even more personal and inspiring. In-store, we’re creating a more immersive environment with thoughtful storytelling, curated products, and genuine one-on-one styling. We’re also excited to expand into new categories, including menswear. At the same time, we’re putting a lot of love into our e-commerce experience so that the feeling of South to North can be enjoyed anywhere. Whether someone connects with us in the shop, online, or at one of our community events, we want it to feel seamless, warm, and true to who we are.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING BASED IN HOUSTON?

Houston celebrates creativity, individuality, and small businesses in such an authentic way. Chevignon

WHAT CAN SHOPPERS EXPECT FROM YOUR BRAND THIS YEAR?

As we celebrate our 47th anniversary, we continue to build on the legacy of a brand founded in Paris in 1979 and inspired by American culture and freedom.

In 2025, we opened our first store in the United States in Houston. The choice was intentional. Texas shares a strong connection with our values: independence, character, and respect for quality.

IS THERE A PARTICULAR COLLECTION YOU ARE EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR? WHY?

We are particularly excited about our Spring Summer campaign, launching on February 2. This collection is a direct response to the needs and rhythm of the Texas market. We are introducing

something very special for Houston: a dedicated capsule inspired by the Houston Rodeo. The rodeo is one of the city’s most iconic annual events, and this limited edition drop allows us to engage deeply with its heritage. The capsule features exclusive leather and denim pieces designed to be part of the experience, not just the wardrobe.

WHAT DO YOU THINK SURPRISES FIRST-TIME CUSTOMERS ABOUT YOUR BRAND?

Many first-time customers comment on the quality of our leather and denim. These are pieces designed to be worn, lived in, and kept over time, not replaced season after season.

We don’t see people as one-time buyers. Our goal is to build lasting relationships, which is why Chevignon is often perceived as a brand you come back to, one that becomes part of your routine and your story.

MAISON CHINOISE OFFERS A VIBRANT CULINARY JOURNEY WHERE TRADITIONAL CHINESE FLAVORS MEET CONTEMPORARY CREATIVITY IN A BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED, INTIMATE SETTING.

Maison Chinoise, the contemporary Chinese restaurant from Lombardi Family Concepts, recently opened its second Texas location in Houston’s River Oaks Shopping Center. The space, including a covered patio, blends traditional Chinese aesthetics with a modern, intimate design.

Executive Chef Jordan He, formerly of Michelin-starred Wing Lei in Las Vegas, leads the kitchen with a focus on authenticity and innovation. Guests can explore a menu of shareable dim sum, dumplings, and regional specialties, including Xiao Long Bao, Spicy Sichuan Pork Wontons, and Imperial Peking Duck. Signature entrees feature Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass, Wagyu Beef Fried Rice, and Singaporean Rice Vermicelli. The King Crab Salad is a great way to start a meal at Maison Chinoise, Chef He explains why it is a stand out dish. maisonchinoiserestaurants.com

THE CRAB

While the Alaskan King Crab is the star of the show, the other ingredients are not only beautiful to look at, but chosen for their compatibility of flavors.

THE TOPPINGS

Chef He uses a microgreen mix and edible flowers for the salad because they provide a slightly bitter taste that is balanced by

the truffle oil. According to Chef He, the flowers are completely edible and add a floral flavor and beautiful visual element to the dish. “The microgreens were selected for their delicate texture and slightly bitter flavor profile. We dress them lightly with truffle oil to balance that bitterness and add an earthy, luxurious note.”

THE FRUIT

Mango and avocado are both year-round fruits, which ensures consistency and quality throughout the seasons. “The pairing was inspired by sushi, combining the creamy richness of avocado with the sweet, tropical brightness of mango,” said Chef He. “We dice both the mango and avocado, then place them into a ring mold to create a clean, structured base. The king crab is gently pressed on top of the avocado layer. We then dress the king crab with yuzu miso dressing and finish the dish with a microgreen mix lightly tossed in truffle oil.”

THE DRESSING

“The yuzu brings a bright, fresh citrus note, while the miso adds a savory, umami-rich depth with a hint of bitterness,” said the chef. “To balance these flavors, we incorporate apple vinegar, which adds a light sweetness and acidity that ties everything together harmoniously.”

After more than a decade at Houston Ballet, Karina González balances legacy, ambition, and artistic purpose today.

A CELEBRATED HOUSTON BALLET PRINCIPAL FINDS RENEWED PURPOSE AS SHE BALANCES FAMILY, LEGACY, AND THE DEFINING PERFORMANCES OF HER UPCOMING SEASON.

ALL THE RIGHT MOVES

Karina González moves through a room with the ease of someone who knows exactly where she belongs. After more than a decade as a principal dancer with Houston Ballet, the Venezuelanborn artist has become one of the company’s most recognizable performers. Her journey began in Caracas, where she trained at the Gustavo Franklin Ballet School before joining the Ballet Nacional

de Caracas and later Tulsa Ballet, becoming a principal dancer in 2007. She joined Houston Ballet in 2010 and rose to principal in 2013 following her performance as Nikiya in Stanton Welch’s La Bayadere. Her career includes a silver medal at the New York International Ballet Competition and performances across international stages.

This year, poised to be an epic year even by her standards, she is practicing something new: being present.

The dancer admits being still has never come naturally. For years, she filled every moment with work, training, and the pursuit of her next goal. In 2025, she earned her Business Administration degree, launched her nonprofit, performed dream roles, and continued her schedule as a principal dancer, all while raising two young daughters. Somewhere in the middle of all that, she realized she needed to shift her perspective.

“Last year brought so many beautiful milestones into my personal and professional life,” González said. She added that time with her family had made the biggest impact on how she now approaches her life and career. “Their laughter, their love, their simple presence reminded me that life’s most powerful moments are often the ones that are not on any schedule or résumé.”

“I LEARNED THAT BEING PRESENT ISN’T ABOUT SLOWING DOWN AMBITION, BUT IT’S ABOUT ENRICHING IT.”
Motherhood reshapes Karina González’s perspective as she finds joy balancing two daughters and career gracefully.

She hopes to carry that mindset into the season ahead. “As I step into the new year, my biggest goal is not just to achieve more, but to feel more, to savor the journey, celebrate the small things, and embrace the people and moments that make all the hard work worthwhile.”

One of those moments came when she got to share the stage with her seven-year-old daughter, Julia, for the first time. Julia danced as a little ballerina and an angel in The Nutcracker during Houston Ballet’s winter run. “Seeing her smile, witnessing her excitement, and watching her experience the beauty of this career at such a young age filled me with a joy I can’t fully describe,” she said.

Although the mother-daughter duo might have another opportunity to dance together in 2026, González is focused on the productions in front of her. She will appear in Broken Wings, Dances at a Gathering, and Giselle, three works that offer different challenges and artistic opportunities.

“From the moment I saw a short clip of Broken Wings online, I knew that portraying such an iconic role, one that carries so much cultural and emotional weight, combined with Annabelle’s intense and powerful choreography, would be a truly unique experience for everyone involved,” she said. “Portraying Frida Kahlo is an immense honor, but it also carries a profound responsibility. She was not only one of the most groundbreaking artists of her time, but she was a woman who broke every woman's expectations and redefined culture.”

She also recognizes the significance of representing a Latina onstage during such a culturally difficult time. “Performing Frida will feel like a very proud opportunity to use arts as an example of resilience, a message of strength, a message that we are good people ready to work and to represent, and that with our self-expression we will continue to inspire others,” said González.

Her awareness extends beyond the stage lights. González has spent the past

Internationally acclaimed ballerina Karina González enters a defining season focused on presence and growth.
“I WANT TO SHOW YOUNG DANCERS THAT THEIR DIFFERENCES ARE THEIR STRENGTHS. I WANT THEM TO FEEL CONFIDENT CHASING THEIR DREAMS WITHOUT FEAR, WITHOUT DOUBT, AND WITHOUT APOLOGIZING FOR WHO THEY ARE.”

several years preparing for the eventual transition from performer to cultural arts leader. She earned her degree and founded Voices of Arts Central, a nonprofit that creates opportunities and access for others.

“I have been learning and experiencing everything it takes to create an environment of possibilities and opportunities for others,” she said. “Through this work, I am learning so much about the administrative side of the arts, programming, fundraising, planning, organizational structure, accounting, marketing, and scheduling. My goal has always been to open as many

doors as possible so that when the time comes, I am ready and confident to step into any role that comes my way.”

Even with her exhausting schedule, González is clear about what matters most. As a mother of two, she understands the rare balance she has achieved. She is grateful for the chance to fully commit her energy to her family and career equally.

“Now, as a mother, I remind myself that I am making a conscious choice to be here, and it is truly a blessing to live the best of both worlds,” she said. “So why not go out there, enjoy, and savor every second, as if it were my last.”

HOUSTON Hair Goals

If you have ever stepped outside in Houston and felt your hair give up before you even reached the car, this one is for you. We talked with Kitsch about the products that actually stand a chance against local humidity and why the brand has made sustainability part of its everyday mission.

Kitsch treats sustainability as a core value, not a detail, and keeps its focus on products that actually work. For humidity, Kitsch recommends the Priming

Heat Protectant and Styling Mist. It helps hair stay put when the air gets heavy. For curls that need to hold their shape, the same mist steps in again with flexible hold that avoids that stiff feeling.

Paired with the Smoothing Air Dry Cream, it supports texture and curl definition that stays soft. Kitsch also says many people are turning to solid shampoo and conditioner because they offer a plastic-free option for a low-waste routine and are easy to pack for travel.

Kitsch offers practical, sustainable hair solutions that keep curls, waves, and style looking great anywhere.

You can also garnish the cheesecake with edible flowers or a sprinkle of edible gold dust for a truly indulgent experience.
